Lovely nose of dark cherry, blackberry, chocolate and a touch of mocha. Silky and elegant cherry and blackberry on the palate along with some mocha and hint of darker truffle notes. Touch of darker spices. Good depth and concentration of flavour and a nice long finish showing off the complexity.

20-vintage La Conseillante vertical (Fribourg): Part of a 20 vintage vertical (key takeaways in the tasting story). Extracted red cherry fruit but with well controlled intensity. Broad herbaceous base that combined dried and fresh herbs. Uplifting floral notes which contrasted beautifully along with a mineral fundament. Nice density without adding too much weight, mouthcoating tannin but felt soft and well-integrated. Plenty of primary fruit.

20 Vintages of La Conseillante (1947-2020): All wines tasted blind. I have had many beautiful Conseillantes in the past, but in this tasting the wines did not shine as expected. A few thoughts: A) Conseillante is a seductive, sensual wine, not unlike more Bordeaux-esque Napa Valley wines. In fact, it reminded me a lot of Opus One, with the blue and black forest berry aromas found in almost every vintage. B) The fruit is ripe, but never too ripe. But only in the cooler years (and 2020) is the fruit perfectly pure and fresh. C) Even in the newer vintages, the (luxurious) oak notes are still present and will need some time to be fully absorbed. D) My biggest problem (and the group had the same one) was that almost all of the newer vintages showed alcohol notes that weren't noticeable en primeur or in the Arrivage tastings (and the wines were served at a perfect temperature or rather a little too cold). E) There were some beautiful wines, complex and seductive, but La Conseillante is not a wine for classic Bordeaux or Left Bank lovers. Conseillante is the hot one-night stand, not the elegant and intellectually appealing wine I want to drink every day. F) The best wine was the 2020 (96pts, the only score above 95pts), confirming my impression that it is a better, less ripe Bordeaux vintage than 2019.
TN: Dark and blue fruit, quite fresh fruit. Some coffee notes too, some meaty hints. Quite interesting. On the palate this has the freshness of a cooler of vintage, not much ripeness but it isn’t underripe either. Not highly complex but with good precision. The structural frame is fine and so is the balance. Overall, good but not great. 92pts.
Decanting: The bottle was opened a few hours before consumption but not decanted. A short decant should be sufficient.

Nick A's Pomerol Part 2 (67 Pall Mall, London): Blue fruited nose. Quink ink and gazpacho. Also a flashback to childhood with some coconut mushroom sweet on the nose too. Palate starts short and little tight, some air opens things somewhat. There is a meatiness that reminds me of steak and kidney pudding, definitely something offaly there. Overall I really like this, by a short head my wine of the night.

Nick's Pomerol Dinner (67 Pall Mall, London): Pale/medium garnet. Open and fragrant nose with pure blue fruits, touch of caramel. Medium bodied, more red-toned fruit on the palate, very fine tannins, fresh acidity, decent length harmonious finish. Drinking well.

Pomerol, part 2 (67 Pall Mall): Mildly disappointing at first, seeming a long way behind the 2010 in terms of both pleasure today and potential for the future, but this wine seemed to change more in the glass than the others tonight, and it was excellent by the end of dinner. The nose was lovely throughout, well-defined with an attractive menthol note, and increasingly savoury with air. The slightly austere, saline palate initially lacked impact, needing more energy and depth, though the elegant character of the nose eventually imposed itself the wine then shared some of the nobility of the 2010. 1 hour decant. Intense high tone yet complex aromatics of red and black currant fruits, earth, truffle, savory spices, and herbs. First bottle of 6...... Honestly, i think I went a little early as this isn't yet delineated enough to warrant a higher score. All the ingredients are there, very Pomerol : velvety, rich, deep wine....very, very well put together. But again, lacking delineation and therefore doesn't have the wow factor that comes when drinking a wine that moves through the gears. It a good but not great vintage so perhaps this imposes a ceiling but I am optimistic this will improve incrementally from here..... I will wait, probably two years, until the next bottle.

Popped and left to breath for about 20mins. Expressive nose with floral elements, blackberries and blueberries, mineral with cigar nuances, sweet spice and earthy elennts. Medium+ body, velvety with balancing acidity but with evident tannins, youthful and fresh. Beautiful wine at a nice stage to drink with good life ahead. 94+

A lovely bottle of wine popped in celebration of my birthday.
Decanted for an hour and half, which it needed all off. Consumed over the next two hours.
The nose was vibrant black fruits with a tint of earth in the background.
On the palate it was evident that there was nothing loose about its structure. But it was rather angular.
As the evening went on it softened, to produce a bouquet of forest fruit and earthy notes. The fruit was evident particularly ripe blackberry and the velvet noticeable.
It just lacked a wow factor but a delicious bottle none the less. A Fine offering but L’Evangile tops it in this vintage for sure!
The theme was there was plenty of life left but coming together Youthful yet relatively balanced. This wine is in ascendency. It will improve for holding, however I don’t it have quite the class or the fine tannins to improve dramatically. 94-95pts potential

Straight from the bottle this one really shines. Harmony, balance and power. Red berry fruits, exclusive woods and spices on the palate and nose. And it stays. What a beauty. Had it 7 years ago and it was closed, now it’s in a very good place.

1 hr decant and probably could have used more. Dark red color. Wine has a great nose of graphite, dirt, and chalk. Nice flavor but lacks depth and character. Seemed very Merlot dominated. Short finish. Wine goes from great to pretty good from nose to finish. Probably better wines at this price point, but was very nice.

Opened and decanted. Beautiful drinking window, just needs an hour to sing. Medium body, has gained an elegant complexity, finesse. Pure blackberries and blueberries well polished by Cabernet Franc, just a bit thin. Give it 5 more years and see how it improves. I woudn't give it many more. 92-93pts

Chateau La Conseillante Vertical with Marielle Cazaux (Au Petit Bouchon): Ripest on the nose so far (and that includes the '03!). But very fresh on the entry - large and expansive but also precise and well-defined blackberry flavors which are starting to emerge as the house signature. The fruit here is youthful but this is solid and robust, no baby flab. Marielle remarks that the tannins should be more refined - I didn't notice.

Chateau La Conseillante Dinner with Marielle Cazaux (Le Cafe Descartes at the French Embassy): Initially a bit tight, blackberry jam, plum, cherry, milk chocolate and limestone. With air, it opens up beautifully adding truffle, caramel, licorice, leather, tree bark and earth. Excellent concentration, packed sweet black fruit, dense and slightly rough, good acidity and mineral, very noticeable slightly coarse tannins and a medium to long concentrated black fruit driven finish. There are a hint of bitterness and coarse tannins that clips finish. It is a bit less charming version of the 05. Perhaps another decade of cellaring will help.

La Conseillante Vertical Tasting (French Embassy - Washington, DC): This showed gorgeous, deep fruit on the nose, along with cedar, leather and cigar shop. Plush, chewy, deep, tannic on the palate, but shows lovely velvety feel, too. Plums, currants, plush fruit, a bit primal still but the fruit is absolutely delicious. notes of cedar and earth. This is really powerful and delicious, but needs a bunch of years I think.

An easy afternoon with close friends; Pomerol and St. Estephe (@ FD): In the bouquet some pleasant stable smells, cigar and impressions of metal. The same on the palate, some chocolate, vanilla and cedar, pleasant sweetness, red and dark berries, fresh acidity and firm tannin which still promises a long future. 2060 as it is in CT seems a bit too enthusiastic to me, but for this full bodied and juicy wine, 2030 wouldn’t surprise me. 93+?

Quite a firm, tannic, almost strict character here. There is more interest in the nose, with its floral, earthy, red and black fruits, tobacco, truffle and plum, than on the palate. Give this at least a decade, and it could soften, but it is not a lot of fun to drink today.

Beautiful purple/brown color with translucent rim of red. Aroma floral, violets and a hint of an odd note (saw someone describe is like laundry detergent and this is about right, it's a bit off-putting). However, the mouthfeel and flavor are nice, but I think the wine is still too austere to really enjoy considering the price tag. I felt the same way about the 2006 Chateau Canon so it might be a characteristic of the vintage on the right bank. Finish is long and red and dark fruit and still floral. I'm saving my other 2 bottles for at least a decade. I think it will evolve substantially.

I liked this a bit better than I did a few weeks ago. Again it's the truffle and the violets and maybe a bit of darker cherry fruits in there. It's a bit more balanced this time around though and while still young, I find it more approachable. Ben hanging out in a glass for a few hours though so maybe I just wasn't patient enough before.

Leather, truffle, violet, and just young. It's not really in balance at the moment and even with a lot of swirling and some time in the glass it doesn't quite come together. A few months ago when I had this I wasn't quite sold on this vintage. Seems that has not changed.

Expressive and fragrant nose of plum, blackcurrant and violets, with spices and menthol. On the palate there is ripe, smooth and luscious fruit and the tannins are agreeable, but still retaining slight grip. Quite enjoyable and drinking well now.

Third chateau from my Bordeaux trip moving to the right bank. Inky purple with hint of brown color and strong nose - meats and truffle coming through. Subtle soft first taste widening to a full bodied middle with great structure, silky texture, light tannins Finish soft but long linger with lots of flavors - licorice, slight meats, earthy.

a bit thin to start with, improving greatly with decanting, about 2 hours. Then quite tannic, notes of dark red fruit, black licorice, good finesse, balance and a very long enjoyable finish. -an interesting phenomenon with black licorice; after having some licorice and then a sip of wine, the licorice notes were greatly amplified and for a long time. -very nice.

Conseillante Master Class (Sherry Lehmann NYC (59th & Park)): Drank next to the '04 and '05. This was meant to be the 'middle of the road' vintage and yet I found it the least compelling of the three. On the nose it's mostly laundry detergent and maybe some dill. On the palette it's also a bit heavy on the oak (but without those extra intense underlying flavors to suggest it's just coming into balance). Spicy. Some violets. Similar flavor profile, but I just didn't like the way it came together in this one as much.

During a La Conseillante Merchant tasting. Dark, shiny purple. Expressive nose of ripe dark fruit with some plum and sweet spices, this is considerably riper in profile vs the 2004. On the palate the richness is visible. Very niche and plush but I am missing a bit of structure and freshness here for a higher score.

Straddling the fence between strict and seductive, the wine is more successful on the floral, cherry, truffle, plum, cocoa and earthy nose than on the palate. Perhaps more time will add the needed softness to its firm character.

Flickinger Tasting at The Casino (Chicago, IL): The nose on this was incredible. Powerful aromas of red fruit and a good bit of earth as well. But this falters a little bit on the palate -- it ends up a little bit thin and feeble, and while there is plenty to like on the palate, I felt that it didn't have the density to live up to the promise on the nose.

Terroir-istes International - France, Bordeaux, Pomerol (Groot Constantia): Mid+ ruby with deep, penetrating, haunting notes of softened red and black cherries, ripe cranberry and mocha. A wonderful expression that continues to the palate with more black cherry, blackberry and plum notes intertwining with expresso foam. Subtle power, ripe, and velvet texture, this has a fuller body with that sticky, fleshy fruit, Ribena edge and jammy dodgers. There is a slight tar note on the close; some extract on the finish.90+

The 2006 La Conseillante is a very creditable vintage, and as Jean-Michel Laporte maintains, an underrated wine. The wine is already very open on the palate, and seems to be gaining depth with every year as the very suave tannins melt away. The classic La Conseillante aromatics are here, though this is in character a warmer vintage, and the black raspberry aromatics take on a rather roasted note that ranks the 2006 a bit behind the 2005 and 2008 for me. The balance and svelte tannic structure are really very well done, however.

Smoky, tannic, black raspberries and cherries are in abundance. The wine is tannic, structured and powerful, with a masculine side to its character. Give this time in the hopes that it softens with age. Knowing the wines well, it should soften with additional age.

The bouquet is special; rustic and creamy, but also some metal… On the palate however the wine is extremely juicy with beautiful, mainly black forest fruits, soft and round tannin with a good bite and pleasant bitterness in the finish. It is probably best not to open a bottle before 2018. 92+ for now, but when the bouquet becomes more harmonious it can easily score 1 - 3 points higher.

At first I was surprised how jammy the nose was - reminded my of my local Washington Bordeaux blends, with concord grape and blackberries coming off the top. Once this wine was given the time it needed to breathe however, the true essence and soul came out. Layers of violets, leather, and exotic spices came wafting up like a magical brew of flowers and earth. Firm round tannins hold up the structure which carries a certain rare finesse about it. The finish was long and luxurious and just kept going and offerening new things to relate it to. I kept going back for more whiffs from the glass too. I could go on smelling this all night! I really wish I could but I can't stop from sipping it either. Wow is all I can say... Stunning wine.

One of my top 5 the last year! Clearly outstanding! Open and so fantastic and nuanced nose that shines with a delicious and meaty aroma. Alcohol :: 13.5% From a half, pop and poured into the decanter. We got fooled by this bottle as this is very Burgundy in style when first served. Perfume raspberry, violet, slight wild factor with mineral, almond nut and wood. High acid entry, good mid palate weight that is youthful and energetic with polish texture and fine grained tannin leads to long, sappy finish with new oak after taste. Didn't get to taste more as this went really fast! My friend told me that when this open up, no doubt this is a Pomerol. This is still very primary but the sense of finesse is there. All the elements have not merge and integrated together and the fruits buried under the structure and tannin. However the wine is so polished and the refined tannin make it approachable. I will give this another 5-7yrs to develop more. Buy - No.

From a half. At first I thought this was a well-made new world cabernet-blend. On retrospect I should have guessed this was an early drinking Bordeaux, but a touch of tobacco leaf threw me off guard. Very fine tannins and simply enjoyable to drink now, with or without food. I would drink this now instead of later. In fact, this was my wine of the night.

This is a structured style of Conseillante. The wine, bottled in April has a nice ruby color, plummy nose with hints of oak. While typical Conseillante elegance is present, this vintage is a little more tannic than most years. It will take longer to develop than the 05.

From a half, pop and poured into the decanter. Buy - No.
