  • Intense golden going towards orange. Intense bouquet w. orange, petroleum and flowers. Dense, intense and almost bulky without being clumsy. The refreshing acidity upholds the elegance. Orange blossom, preserved lemons and hints of nuts. Perhaps a bit short.
    Drink.

  • fantastic outstanding bottle - yellow colour - what a nose...

  • PnP, consumed over a period of two hours together with a tuna steak and a slightly spicy green curry. Bright intensive yellow color. On the nose very intensive, deep and different yellow fruits. Perfect match to this food, perfect balance between drink animating fantastic freshness, with a touch of lemon, and deep, intensive ripe and pure fruit, mainly apricot. The finish of multiple flavors stays on the palate for about a minute. 2007 was not an ideal vintage for German Riesling, imo too warm. But this Hermannshöhle GG is absolute outstanding from one of the best Winemaker in Germany and a great privilege to drink.

P.S.: Even the smaller wines from Dönnhoff from this vintage are still tasting very young and sooo good !

  • A relaxed afternoon with two crazy guys (@Private location, Solingen): Glass: Zalto Universal
Popped and poured, two bottles drunk in parallel over two days. Perfect bottles. Youthful pale golden color. On day one quite similar/comparable to 2004, on day two a bit weaker, more advanced with more mellow apple notes. Wonderful mineral nose with lots of yellow stone fruit. Classic Hermannshöhle with a wonderful energy depth and length. Potential for at least 5+ years. On day one certainly 95 on day two 92-93 = 94

  • Bought on release and perfectly stored. Unanimous praise at the table. Light golden colour. On the nose, while initially a bit shy, a complex array develops featuring tropical fruit, earthy minerality, herbal and waxy tones and only a little petrol. In the mouth the wine is full-bodied in Riesling terms, yet with a great lift of acidity, the latter I did not expect from vintage 2007. Broad-shouldered, but proportioned and not tiring to drink. Really masterfully crafted. The wine seems to be in its prime but will probably keep for another five years at least. My preferred Riesling wines are dry Kabinett, therefore I find it difficult to score this big boy at 95+, which he probably deserves.

  • Martin BYO: Very intense and fresh. Slightly oxidized but still very nice. Packed with bitter grape fruit and intense lemon. Very impressive performance.

  • Riesling Lunch (Frank's place in Matraville): Medium plus intensity aromas of apricot, peach, honey, slight cream, sweet spice and butter back this up. More of the same on the palate. Very rich. Super long. Beautifully balanced. Utterly lovely.

  • Ripe fruit. Apricot, pineapple upside down cake, florals, honey, some petrol, and porphyric rocks on the nose. Expansive on the palate with good acidity that keeps it in balance, but with a decidedly baroque slant. It's rich, with a ton of slate, good acidity, broad fruit, apricot pith, candied pineapple, lemon and orange rind. It's dense and viscous for riesling, with lots of dry extract, yet still cohesive. It seems like there may have been a little botrytis. Very long on the back end. It's rich and while it is in balance, it is in a broader, richer style. It still pulls it off very well. A much better showing than the last bottle in 2017 and more in line with the earlier notes.

  • Very ripe nose of peach, honey, and tinge of lemons. Equally ripe and round palate of honeysuckle, apple, citrus, with just enough acidity/freshness. However, I recalled liking this much more when it was younger with perhaps a touch higher freshness and minerality...

  • Angelica wine club - Raclette night (Strand Cellars, Croydon): Honey, peaches and stone fruit, slight tropical fruit, sweet spice. Crikey. Instant party in my mouth. Rich but not overly so, long, slight more mineral on the palate but still with plenty of fruit. Long. Very long in fact. Good.

  • Nahe^3: 10 vintages of Halenberg, Hermannshöhle and Felseneck + X (@Private location, Frankfurt): *** brief note from an extensive tasting ***
    Glass: Gabriel Gold
Tasted blind. Bottle opened about 2-4h before, double decanted before serving.
    Glowing, pale golden yellow color.
Youthful, complex and deep nose. On the palate enormous pressure and tension, lots of extract, combined with a great balance. Muscular, but never fat. Racy, ripe acidity. Very precise. Still very young and with a bright and promising future. 95-96

  • A Perfect Match: Riesling GG versus Beef Vol. 4 (Delta Bistro, Lagerstraße 11, Hamburg): As the Morstein before an extreme convincing bottle, an improvement in Riesling? For me , yes!
Starts with some beewax on the nose, and the acidity is a little more energetic than the Morstein bottle, but these are both absolutely TOP NOTCH Rieslings, two from the reference wineyards and estates, the fruit delicious and still this young mineralic appearance, hope I hold another bottle of this in my cellar, at the moment there is a little chaos, but will search for these bottles......., ****(*+), 98-99+ potential

  • Tasted blind. This is one of the best dry Riesling’s I’ve had in living memory. Stone and orange peel on the nose, superb structure and great complexity of flavors - flint, stone fruit, allspice. Terrific and in the sweet spot of its drinking window.

  • Very successful development over the last years (see critical note from 11-11-26). Ripe, spicy and complex with late-harvest aromas and a touch of honey. Full-bodied with great concentration, embedded acidity and a long spicy finish. Very harmonious, not at all bitter anymore, but as the alcohol verges on high it shows best at lower temperatures. Impressive wine!

  • Cellartracker in the flesh with Stefan, Mats, Tomas and Basil (La Rochelle, Tokyo): Kerosene initially, meaty spice, earthy, apple. Juicy acidity, ripe apples, long, broadly rich. Called this for what it was - I brought it.

  • Dark yellow, red shimmer --- Nose saline and vanilla vapor, sea breeze, citrus notes, very appealing --- Palate fresh, acidic, silky, yellow fruit, citrus fruit, dried apple, some orange peel, minerals, nice tartness, green aspects, red grapefruit, some flint stone --- Finishes pretty long on on fruity aspects, so elegant tartness and minerals. Ageless, a beauty, elegance and vivacity, very tasty and approachable.

  • Sublime dry Riesling.
Nose full of ripe fruit, peach, orange peel and floral notes.
On the palate it was very smooth, rounded, with acidity hidden beneath the fruit but still mouthcleansing. Long, tasty and very satisfying.
At a very nice point to drink, smoothed out but nowhere near decline.

  • Sensational dry Riesling, this is really what a classical GG should be like! Very long, nice caramel and fruit notes and perfectly integrated acitidity flavours
Just lacking some "flair" or something that is really, really, extraordinary about it
But this is a stunningly great Riesling!!

  • Coravin fun - German Riesling tasting...then drinking! (E & M's in the rocks, Sydney): "From Coravin. I pick up the tiniest whiff of cork taint here which seems to blow off then also honey, cream, honeysuckle, apple and very slight lychee. In the mouth it is green appley and honeyed flavours but bone dry, superb balance, exceedingly long and exceedingly nice.
We opened this bottle to have with supper and, over time, the cork taint became more discernible. FLAW"

  • I preferred this when it was a bit younger. The fruit now has a slightly smoky and honeyed tinge to it, and the immense stony minerality it had in its youth isn't as intense. The flavours are more mature and perhaps more complex, but it doesn't have the sheer drinkability or youthful exuberance that made it so great to drink in its youth. It's a bit more like any other GG now with the dryness coming across more acutely, and showing a bit more austerity.

  • Golden colour, slate, wet stones, nectarine, nuts and citrus. Low acidity. Full maturity. It will hold on till 2020 for sure, maybe longer, but why wait?

  • Riesling Blitzkrieg by FC1910; 3/11/2016-3/12/2016 (Teatro Campos Elíseos - Bilbao): Almost thanking that little dry after all this sweetness. Baked apple without that extra sweetness of other bottles. Good at its best.

Casi se agradece un poco de sequedad después de tanto dulzor. Manzana asada sin ese extra de dulzor de otras botellas. En lo mentor silane te bueno.

  • Pop and pour

Ripe and simultaneously bright with citrus and green apples on the fruit spectrum, but there is much more. The fruit is perfectly ripe, but it does not get hot. It just rounds out the chiseled structure, and the acidity keeps it beautifully fresh. It's seamless, pure, and deep with the fruit playing a supporting role to the huge minerality and for lack of a better term Hermannshohle earth. Elegant, yet imposing with huge but weightless structure and clarity. Just hinting at petrol on the back end. Effortless and drinking in a great spot right now. Similar to the last bottle a couple years ago. Equally impressive and drinkable. As Helmut Donnhoff says, like drinking mineral water. A rare situation when a wine allows you to either geek out and dissect it, or just sit back and enjoy the ride. Superb. 95pts

  • Occasional dinner group: Riesling GG and 100 RP point wines: Just a few notes; Full bodied and concentrated, tropical yellow fruits like pineapple, good acidity and bitterness. The wine was popped and poured and that was probably not the best to do. Now a score of only 91, but I wonder how this will show in 2025.

  • Dinner with good friends (Ubin Seafood): PnP'ed as well. Might've been a mistake as this should've been decanted to give it a whiff of air... Appeared closed (probably too cold) at first, the nose took a while to open up in the glass - lemon, tropical fruits... On the palate, it came across as a bit flabby. Hrmm, mebbe it's just this particular juncture in its development cycle? Anyway, grapefruits, peaches are what one can still taste, but sorely lacking that finesse and tension although finish was still quite lengthy... Try again in a few yrs...

  • Excellent dry riesling. Intense and powerful, but also detailed and fine. Lovely floral top notes. Very lively, but also quite tight acidity. A bit of petrol, but this gives way for a nice smoky minerality. Really quite long. I liked this a lot.

  • A birthday at Blue Hill (Blue Hill at Stone Barns, Pocantico Hills, NY): In the glass, honey gold. On the nose, a blast of tropical fruit and floral aromatics, with a herbal note that cuts through. On the palate, peach, honeysuckle, and lychee, with a smooth texture and a large dose of acidity, almost too much acidity relative to the fruit. Quite good, and as usual a quality wine from Donnhoff, but it suffered by direct comparison with the champagne that preceded it.

  • a Großes Gewächs summernight: lemon cest on the nose, totally concentrated appearance, some tropical fruit such as mango, smoaky, mineralic, mid- to fullbodied, the finish acid driven, way too young, very long aftertaste, will keep the other bottles for more than 5 years, *(***- ?), 90- 93?

  • Not sure what to make of this. It starts out nicely with smoky and mineral aromas around a core of fresh white fruit, but with air it starts to fall apart, feeling softer and heavier than I'd expect on the mid palate with little focus or finesse, and leftovers the following day develop a strange vinyl/plastic-like note in the aromatics that overwhelm the fruit. Certainly enjoyable for the first couple of glasses, but I have no idea where this wine is headed right now.

  • Grapefruit, tons of minerals and stone. Long and a bit savory. An absolute pleasure to drink, now or in a decade...

  • This is drinking very well right now, but it has time in hand. There is still a great deal of stone fruit, and it is married to a subtle spice and a hint of smoke. There is fantastic richness (it nearly feels thick in texture), and also fine cut to keep the wine from feeling heavy. The finish is all about stones and smoke and lingers for as long as you care to wait. Drinking this wine now is a delicious experience, and I would not miss it. That said, there is little fear in cellaring longer, as the fruit is still strong and in balance with all the other elements of the wine.

Høy, men balansert sødme. Presis, drivende syre. Flott mineralitet i avslutningen. Innslag av grapefrukt. Sitter svært lenge i. Drikker flott nå, men tåler enda mange år.

  • Rieslingfeier - BYOB Main Event (Rouge Tomate, NYC): Drinking superbly now. A broad yet very elegant palate presence, layers of smoke, stone and fresh citrus and pear fruit all coming together seamlessly; more gentle and understated than the Kellers and quite a stylistic contrast.

  • Interesting -- I had the sensewhen I was drinking this that it had developed a lot since release, but looking back on my original note, maybe it's not so different after all. The riesling kerosene note is in full effect here with some "petrol" or waxiness or what have you; if we have any change over the last few years it's probably some polishing of the texture which now has a thicker, oily feel to it even though there is also some rocky detail.

  • pop and pour, enjoyed over several hours

Beautiful more approachable nose than the 06 right now. Outstanding freshness and a floral lift to the monument to stone and red slate that this is. Beautiful balance, and in spite of its level extract there is an elegance, lightness and seamless power that is quite impressive. Powerful, yet deft, thought provoking yet incredibly drinkable. Very approachable, with citrus and orchard fruit, lovely floral lift, and huge minerality. It's hard to quantify this, but it a wine that just is. It achieves a deliciousness without any sense of trying, comfortable in its shoes and exhibiting great balance. Another Donnhoff example of the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. A complicated wine that you can ponder or just decide to let it come to you and enjoy. Few wines do both for me. Drinking great right now. Mouthwateringly delicious. 96pts

  • I've consumed many bottles of wine, almost all of which I've enjoyed enormously, since I last posted a review here. However, none have compelled me to share my experiences of them in the way that this astonishing one did. Having read some previous reviews and decanted it for about two hours the nose intially had me worried. There was certainly no lack of pungency but charm and elegance were consequently missing. However, once poured into the glass these latter characteristics appeared in abundance as a beautiful florality began to offset the natural riesling petrol. So soft and caressing was the palate entry that the wine itself seemed encased in a fluid skin that only released the burst of acidity that the myriad fruits required as it hit the back of the mouth. The detectable flavours evolved constantly with the last glass providing as many surprises as the first; grapefruit, melon, peach, apricot, lemon, nettle, then more savoury elements that I failed to identify because my palate was so shocked and my mind so in awe of what I was experiencing. A phenomenal wine that sits alongside a Dagueneau 2005 Silex at the apex of my white wine experiences.

  • Drank this over the course of 6 hours. Had an afternoon glass and then later at dinner. I really enjoyed this. It was sweet without being overly west, it had some nice citrus notes to it and a bit of burnt caramel. It was really pleasant on the mouth on a cold rainy afternoon. It had a nice unctuous quality to it. I bought the last bottle on Centennial's red dot sale and paid $4.99 for this. I would drink this every day at that price.

  • Rich lemon hue. Closed on the nose, even after airing. Lemon zest, late harvest fruit, nuts, slatey minerality. Big, rich and intense on the palate. Good stony acid stucture, lot of muscles around it, in the way of a Wachau smaragd. Quite high alcohol, bitter finish, not very elegant. A disappointment tonight, and we're obviously trying it too early. Wait at least three years, and pair it with a schnitzel.

  • 2000 Bordeaux Retrospect: Decanted for about 60mins. Perfume aromas of floral and mineral, with relatively sweet core for a GG that display honey citrus as well as lemony note. Sweet entry, very lush and rich but where is the very firm acidity backbone? Rather flabby and disappointed. The medium length finish is a bit sweet too. This simply lack of the definition. I was left early and my friend updated me that after chilled and decanted for another 1.5-2hrs, the wine has actually show very well, sweetness mellow down and show very good structured, depth and refinement.

  • I had high hopes that 24 hours in the fridge might do this some good...no luck. It's still very good...but I think I'm going to try to be patient with my last bottle for another 2-3 years. Maybe time will do this some good.

  • I really wanted this to be an epiphany wine...but it just didn't live up to the hype. I think that is the danger with highly anticipated wines.

    Color: Light golden yellow
Smell: citrus, quince, crushed stones, and a saline note
Taste: Green apple, lime, kumkuat, lemon, star fruit, and green banana
Overall: A wonderful wine that is clearly complex and outstanding. However, it's just not as exciting as I had hoped it would be. There is high acidity, lithe and tart fruit flavors that are crystal clear, there is even a slight presence of tannin like biting into a green banana. However, this was not classic as I expected it would be and I don't know if time will improve my thoughts on this wine. I do love it....it is outstanding. It's just not at the level that I hoped it would be.

  • Three German producers with AuZone (Danderyd): In the nose honey, wine gum, some mineral aromas, also “Auslese-like” but not quite the very obvious impression of overripe grapes that #2 gives. On the palate more than medium-bodied, gives an impression of being not quite dry, honeyed, very fruity, the acidity somewhat in the background but clearly present. A good concentration with the elegance retained. 92-93 p.

  • Simple Series VI: Grosses Gewach Dinner (Peach Garden, OCBC Building): This was a great surprise - good, but this was surely the underperformer of the night. An off-bottle perhaps? Or has this fallen asleep? The only resemblance it bore to the incredible bottle I last tried was on the nose, which was beautiful. Rich scents of treacle, toffee and toast rose from the glass, rather richer and stickier than the last bottle, alongside lacy citrus grapefruit notes and deep chalky mineral and stone nuances. Wow. It was at once lovely, refined and deep and inviting. The palate was quite a let-down though. Rather straightforward, with lemon and grapefruit flavours at the fore, along with some guava towards the mid-palate. Rich, weighty, balanced for sure, but somehow lacking the cut and precise definition that so marked the last bottle for me. Finish still had the same lovely length, with peachy flavours mingling with breadfruit and a touch of mineral. I would love to retaste another bottle - this one was good, but really disappointing after the last experience.

  • 2010 Simple Wine Dinner Series No.6 - SBSS "Dry" Dinner (Peach Garden @ OCBC Building): Alcohol :: 13.5%
Tasted Blind. WOW! What a nose. Another wine that display precise, fine and focus, highly aromatic nose of floral, ripe white fruits, added extra dimension with wet stone and mineral. The nose is superb! The palate is good, but lack of a bit depth and dimension compare to the nose which showing spicy, mineral driven with ripe white fruits, balance and juicy persistent finish. Very clean and precise, more complete and elegant wine with lots of liveliness. Slightly prefer this compare to the Hubacker 2007 in the same flight. Rebuy - Yes

Bourillon Dorleans Coulee d'Argent Vielles Vignes (Vouvray, Loire, France) 2003, brought by Bob Henrick.; Lexington, KY. Vivid green-gold. Earth, melon, diesel; medium body; apple cider pungency, good length. Opens to show great depth, integration, and a scintillating energy. Very impressive dry Vouvray. 92

Clos du Petit Mont 1996 (Vouvray, Loire, France) Moelleux. Bob H. Vivid yellow-green; Lanolin with an interesting play of sweetness and maderization; Apple juice finish. 87

Howie Hart 2004 Sparkling Cuvee. One of Howie's eponymous bottles, always evident in generosity around MoCOOL. Pinot noir and Chardonnay. Quite strongly bubbly. Intensely weedy nose; pinot cola palate. 82/100.

Sybille Kuntz Estate Riesling 2006 (Mosel, Germany). Mine. Typical complexity and depth for this high-quality estate Riesling, very dry but roundly fruity, a great value. Should be better known and more widely marketed. This estate seems to reserve its best fruit for its least expensive wines. Round and satisfying; with or without food. 87-89

Craggy Range Syrah Le Sol Gimblett Gravels Vineyard 2002. Mine. Very Syrah-ish, ripe, with tar, violets, leather, and smoke, quite ripe, with lowish acid and good ripe tannins.'theme' bottle brought so that I could open what I really wanted to : 16 bottles of Riesling and stickies! Drink now. 92

Nikolaihof 2004 Riesling ‘Steiner Hund’ Reserve (Kremstal, Austria). Mine. Sweet nose, with funky fine fresh apple cider nose; light, delicate, crisp; Edgy fruit-white wine tannin combo. A great Steiner Hund. 92

Hermann Dönnhoff Riesling Hermannshöhle 2007 (Nahe, Germany). Mine. Strawberries and terroir-specific funk (umami); thick texture, sweet fruit. Infanticide. 95-100.

Heribert Kerpen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese *, Versteigerungs (Auction) Wine. Mine. Typical of previously reported bottles. Auslese density; rustic, powerful. 91/100.

Herman Dönnhof Felsentürmchen Riesling Spätlese 2007. Mine. Typical, complex, juicy, vivid; like gulping fragrant smoky-stony cherry juice. Great example of series. 92/100

Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese. Mine. Extroverted spiciness; hard surface and polished acidity. Not the time to drink this–give it five to seven more years. 91/100.

Jamet 1985 Côte-Rôtie. Jim Grow. Dark, cloudy, faded edge. Great volumes of integrated, plum and cherry--dominated fruit, seasoned with smoky bacon fat. A touch of appetizing, attractive bitterness on the finish. 95/100.

2000 Paul Jaboulet Ainé Hermitage La Chapelle, Outrageously sweet fruit with hollow, almost metallic midpalate, edged with some nice smoke. Fine ripe tannins, energetic dry cherry finish. 87
Ogier Côte-Rôtie 1966 Tête de Cuvée. Still quite alive with integrated thyme, cherries and resolved tannins. Very nice for a negociant wine. 86

  • Pale straw / gold. Fairly rich white fruit, honey and candle wax nose. Complex and a touch of perfume. Super, actually – this is a Hermannshohle nose that just dances in and out of the senses. A wine of extraordinary gravitas. Enters like a top class spatlese and follows with extract versus sweetness and even greater vibrancy. For me, a new style of Riesling that I find spectacular. Gave even more after 3 hours of airtime. Seems to be just an infant – a beautiful one at that. (94+)

  • Grower's Champagne, Grand Cru Burg and Grosses Gewach Riesling (Artisan Cellars, Palais Renaisance / Jade Palace, Forum Galleria): One of the handful of the very best white wines I have had this year. This was just awesome. Beautiful nose had flowers, chamomile, musk, cherries and cream with lots more complexity just waiting to unfurl as it ages. This was every bit as expressive and classy as its sweeter cousins. If the nose was good, the palate was just mind-blowing. Incredible, incredible depth and lots of richness throughout - it attacked with a wash of flowers, mandarin orange, cherries, some bandung notes, rose petals, cream, some snappily fresh white fruit. Profound and haunting, yet at the same time beautifully balanced and great with food. Finish was not astoundingly long, yet had plenty of length and tons of grip, with a rush of lovely minerality bringing the wine to a seamlessly elegant end. Wow.

  • German wine tasting (Martins office): Light yellow color. Pure, intense aromas of asparagus, slightly exotic with lychee, white pears, pineapple and a flinty mineral touch. Similarly pure and intense on the palate with exotic fruits, white pears and lychee at first, while picking up some mushroom and white flowers on the midpalate and finish. Juicy but with striking acidity. Very fresh and amazing length.

  • Großes Gewächs 2007 (Trestle on Tenth): My second taste of this wine in the last few weeks, so maybe an interesting control to show how much the excitement of the Schafer-Frohlichs managed to overpower the wines that followed, since this doesn't perform nearly as well (or at all the same) as I remember. It's more open-knit than the wines before, and not so different than the Dellchen on entry -- but then the fruit profile reveals a fleshier, pear-like material and it finishes with a more interesting chalkiness.

  • Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Vertical (Trestle on Tenth): A pungent kerosene/floral nose with corresponding beeswaxy flavors combined with a generous richness of fruit that feels plump and dark at first, then turns brighter, unraveling sumptuous orange/tangerine flavors on the lengthy back end. There's a grinding traction to this wine that gives it a dynamic mouthfeel and an austere solidity. A real beauty that, with the 2006, shows the tröcken expressions are unjustly ignored at this address.

  • A night of Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle at Trestle on Tenth (NYC): AP #30, 13.5% alcohol. This has an intoxicating nose dominated by a smoky and stony character with citrus fruits, honeydew melon, slate, hints of lychee and burned leaves underneath. Absolutely stunning on the palate, where it's crammed with stony, earthy mineral flavours to the point that this feels more like a solid than liquid. This has immense power and depth, yet is almost weightless in the mouth with incredible balance, precision and clarity of flavour, showing layers of citrus fruits, some pear and melon with some metal shavings and herbal notes at the back end. Finishes very long. Absolutely stunning, and this got even better with air, with the flavours becoming more seamless and the wine taking on a silky, almost glossy texture.
