I love holding these big California Pinots back as they seem to get better and better with some aging. This was the last of my ‘08 SC and wish I had more. The wine has softened with time. Dusty red fruits with cherry/raspberry in mid palate. Everything is synched to provide enjoyment from first taste to long, smooth finish. Lots of gas in the tank for this one.

Took to the Wolf in Oakland with friends who had never had a KB.
Opened not decanted. Surprisingly fresh and has several years to go. Light cherry on opening. Morphs into more complex layers of light to darker cherry with also a "down" flavor note. Ends with a orange juice finish with some heat. Very Good.

Still going strong. Deep red, purple hints. Ripe cherry, a bit macerated perhaps, some spiciness and forest floor. Tannins integrated but retains liveliness.
Drink now or over next couple of years.

For my preference, some age really does these wines a favor. Still full bodied but balanced, fruity, and delicious. Fair amount of alcohol is noticeable in the long finish.

Gorgeous nose. Medium red color. Smooth palate, a bit of alcohol and sweetness, herbal/menthol notes, cherry, luscious mouthfeel, very smooth, slight heat on finish.

Opened and imbibed over a few days. A little thin at this point, and lacking verve for the first day, but doubling down and gaining traction by the last day (day four). Black cherry, a little tart, toasty elements, a little octane, cola, mixed berry cobbler.

Medium+ ruby color with a garnet hue showing the slightest signs of age. Black cherry and raspberry are prominent on the nose with just a hint of cola saying “hi I am a California Pinot.” 5-Spice, dried tobacco and smoky notes (think campfire) round out the profile. Medium+ finish make for a quite agreeable wine. I was surprised at how well this wine has integrated as I have had other Kosta Browne wines with 6+ years that felt a little flabby with age.
Thin for a Kosta Browne, low on fruit, dry. Missing the flowery bouquet I'm used to. Opened side by side with a 2009 KB Sonoma Coast, Was a little better after an hour, but the 2009 won hands down.

Drank from a Mag, took it to Farington House , PNP but drank over 3 hours. Lovely nose, this was full throttle dark fruit, balanced acid, and smooth as silk. Drinking well now, not old but not needing any additional time to be well integrated. Excellent! Great with the sweetbreads and other rich savory courses.

Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately. Followed over about 90 minutes.
Dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of briar patch, black berries and black cherries. Flavors of black cherries, plums and black berries. Medium acidity, medium tannin, full bodied. Drink or hold.

Very disappointing. Sensed nothing on the nose; my wife sensed a bit of red fruit. Palate was all cherry juice. No earthiness, no funk, no complexity. A fruit bomb, nothing more. About as unBurgundian as you can get.

Opened for Ally's 8th birthday. Initial swirl showing the candied strawberry, soy, pomegranate and blood orange elements. Initially a bit lighter in body that your typical KB. A little thin on the palate backend and finish with regard to the typical fruit compote concentration. Some smoke dust.

nice aromas of red and blue fruit, cola, hoisin sauce. Big jam pot of fruit on the palate. good balance. Finish that persisted for 30 seconds. New world cocktail wine. in that style, quite good. Ready now with some aeration, but also has time to go.

I was disappointed in this wine. Poured a beautiful light garnet color with no brown tinge on the edges. Cherries and strawberries on the nose with that, a little earth and a little vanilla on the palate. There was some 'heat' in the mouth. Maybe I waited too long to drink it.

Beautiful nose although it suggests there might be some heat here. Fairly light in body with bright acidity on the palate. toasted strawberries and wild game with hints of leather on the finish.

Great clarity, translucent, and pretty garnet color. The aromas are tight, cranberry, cherry, mushroom, and earthy notes. The tastes are cherry, earth, root beer, and some dill notes. The tannins are silky and the finish is delicious and earthy with a sour-fruit aftertaste.

Decanted about 1 hour. Definitely went better during dinner than on its own. Very nice KB Pinot but nothing special. I don't feel holding any longer is warranted. This one is ready and I haven't seen any improvement over the past year.

No formal notes. P&P and consumed over two hours. The dominant, ripe fruit from early in this wine's life has subdued and integrated well with the subtle spice, black pepper and floral notes. There is still a dark and red fruit dominated profile, but this is in overall balance. Took about 30 minutes in the glass to start showing really well after the first pour. The wine seems a bit hollow/short on the mid-palate transition to the finish.

Uncle Rob's Visit: Impressive showing and liked my sips of this one, but perhaps due to its rep it disappeared rather quickly and I didn’t spend a lot of time with it. Rich and layered with bold flavors and aromas of ripe blueberry and wild berries accented by spice and espresso.

Not my favorite KB but still a very good American Pinot. I think this may have been a bit long in the tooth. Best to drink these if you still have them as they are on the decline in 2015.

Popped and poured 30 min later. Served in Riedel Vinum Burgundy stems. @ 65 F . Medium intensity garnet color, pronounced nose and palate of baked black cherry, cola, vanilla oak . Medium body... Palate was dry with medium plus acidity and low to medium tannins, with a pronounced intensity of fruit. very new world fruit forward style pinot. Outstanding

Excellent wine that still shows good body adding the beginnings of more mature elements. This vintage is drinking very well now and has definitely improved since distribution. Slightly stinky nose at first gives way to beautiful sassafras and raspberry notes. Nicely smooth palate with spice and fruit follow, ending on a medium long finish with just a bare hint of heat. This was a big hit at my wife's Bunco party.

Very nice. Clearly a New World pinot, with plenty of fruit leading the way. That said, surprisingly interesting and complex. You won't mistake this for Burgundy, but it's a very nice wine that keeps you interested. No need to wait; I don't think this will get better with time, although I bet it lasts longer than people expect too.

A delightfully complex pinot from California whose main complaint is that there's a bit too much alcohol on the finish. Otherwise, nice cherries, nice earth, nice length, reasonable acid presence; done in a more extracted California style, but not over-the-top.

Improved from last showing with nose of cherries, spice, cola, and brown sugar. On the palate rich and full with bright cherry, cola, and spice. Slightly hot on the finish with decent acidity. Very well made.

Decanted about 2 hours. Fruity, with lots of strawberry and some cherry. Very light hint of vanilla. Very smooth drinking wine but doesn't possess the Wow of the higher rated KB's. Drinking very well and a very nice wine.

Floral and red fruity spice on the nose upon opening. A beautiful pinot that starts with cherry/strawberry on the front palate with cola joining the party mid palate. Tanins are well integrated and this results in a delightfully balanced but not over extracted wine. My sister, who generally does not drink wine tasted my glass and asked for one of her own. What is left in my cellar is drinking extremely well but appears in no danger of peaking either.

Maroon in color with slight bricking on the edges. 14.6% ABV. Dark fruits, spice, anise and forest floor on the nose. Medium body with perfect acidity. Black cherry, cloves, truffles and A&W Root Beer on the palate. Subtle tannins. From memory this wine has a darker fruit profile than previous vintages. This wine clearly has none of the heat many associate with the Kosta Browne wines of yesteryear. What's not to like? Super wine! Drink over the next 2-4 years.

Medium purple color, with just the slightest bricking. Perfumed aromas of cherry pie, red currant, and sandalwood. On the palate, raspberry, sweet licorice, Dr. Pepper, and spice notes show. A decent cut of acidity comes though the sweet tannins. There’s a bit of heat showing on the medium finish.

Dark garnet color but some bricking on the edges. Chambord nose and dark toast. Sweet dark fruit and a good dose of oak but it all plays well together. Tannins are gentle and a bite of acid, this could age except it's my last bottle. Medium plus finish.

I'm trying to figure out what I think about this PN. While it is smooth and tasty it almost seems like it seems like it's antiseptic. I'm not talking about the taste, which is quite good, but just the thought that comes mind. Maybe what I am trying in wine rating terms is that it lacks complexity

This is a typical KB bottling. Rich red fruit fruit, sassafras, some anise, white pepper, earth and spice all in a forward, new world format. It has tamed some since my last tasting. Quite nice, drinking well and still has a lot of years left.

Very intense cherry, and a bit of cranberry. Some heat, surprising for the 14.6%. A little cola. Less than plush mouth feel, but still smooth--I'm beginning to prefer this over the super-rich velvet texture that some aim for. All in all a very nice wine, but not much complexity or finish. B
11/25/2014 Still disappointed in the lack of finish. It's a nice wine, but not up to par with some of their later vintages.
2/21/2019 Five more years in the bottle hasn't changed it much, which surprises me. It's still all fruit at the beginning, without being the least bit extracted, but then fades quickly.

Decanted 2 hours prior to drinking. So happy this is my last '08 pinot. If KB cannot make a truly engaging wine from the vintage, I think it is telling as I am a big fan. This bottle, so uncharacteristic, tasted like a valiant attempt achieving a sense of mouthfeel, a hint of flavor profile, a stab at complexity, but never quite captured any of it resulting in simply vin ordinaire. The good news is that the '09 Sonoma Coast is divine.

Cola on the nose. A bit harsh and coarse in the mouth. Definitely hot. Was ok with food but not much as a sipper. I am ambivalent about it and Kosta Browne in general. The more I drink it the less I like it.

This bottle did not show very well compared to past KB's. At times nice fruit and complexities were present, but at other times the wine seemed unbalanced and a bit hot. Probably a mid to upper 80's score if I were to put a number to it.

Huge bouquet with a fairly long finish. This wine bangs your palate with a burst of berry like flavors that paste a huge grin on your face. This wine is bold and brash. It's a carnivores Pinot delight, more than standing up strong to a ribeye steak. It's got some complexity to it, but that's not its selling point.

The more wine I drink, the less I know. My first exposure to the 08KBSC was good but not memorable. I even gave away a bottle as a Christmas gift to someone who never had a KB. I opened my last tonight and was blown off the couch. Complete harmony with an intoxicating nose and perfectly balanced cherry-spicy finish that never ended. A bouquet devoid of alcohol despite the high %. A wow wine on every level. I dont blame bottle variation but rather validation that wine is alive and sometimes it just wants to sing. Tonight it sang Handle's Messiah!

This wine feels as if it is just coming in to its own. Still youthful as I decanted an hour and it still unfolded and evolved in the glass. Somewhat restrained nose began to offer hints of dark cherry, vanilla and floral. Palate unfolded slowly with dark fruit, spice and black plum. Nice mouthfeel and lasting finish. Seems to be drinking wonderfully now with room to continue to age.

Big (huge for a pinot), lush, darker fruits and than most pinot backed by some acidity. Primary. Little in way of tannins. Almost seemed to be trending downward already as wine was very smooth, not terribly aeromatic and not bright on the nose. Not a big fan of this style...very dissapointing to be honest.

Haven’t had a KB in a while. Drank over 3 hours. Nice sweet nose of red cherries, some blue fruit, vanilla and a little spice. The palate matched with primary fruit flavors and bright acidity. Consumed over 2 days, note from day 2. Nose: Medium expressiveness, black cherry, bacon fat, chocolate, smoke and vanilla. Palate: Medium to full bodied, nice balance, ice tea, Asian spice, and cherry up front, holds up nicely thru the mid-palate, turns a little astringent/bitter in the back-end. Finish: Subtle start dominated by non-sweetened ice tea and Asian spice that builds in intensity for 5-10 seconds and lingers for 30+ seconds. This wine hits on all cylinders from front to back which is great, but just lacks one important factor - deliciousness.

aromas of cherry, green tea and cola. Tastes of the same and adds medium sweet spice and a touch of earth. Since everyone else was checking up on this wine, I decided to do the same. It was a year ago I first tasted this vintage and I was a little disappointed. Thought the wine was nice but nothing special or particularly interesting and when I spend $50+ a bottle it better be good. Waiting a year helped immensely and I continue to drink a bottle a year moving forward. Fruit is not overpowering or sappy. Good finesse, even slightly femine.

Time to check in with these. Nose of black cherry, cola, pie cherry, black tea, spice. On the palate, black cherry, cola, sappy brown sugar, spice. Finishes hot with noticeable alcohol but nice grip and acidity. Drink with a decant or hold for 2-4 more years.
2 hour decant. Clear, med ruby red/purple color. Usual KB nose. Lighter style, good balance & drinking window. Better as it had more time in glass to open up. Fruity, fresh, clean, easy drinking. Nothing off. $62

Opened not decanted. Plum colored with about a 1/4" of clarity at the edge of the glass. On the entry, dark cherry attack with black cherry notes; light to medium body weight; on the mid palate: citrus, cola, and a touch of maple syrup; some spices mixed with a some heat; ends with a dark citrus finish. Still showing somewhat young. Needs a decent decant or some more bottle age. Good to Good+.

I see the last score was 95, I'll max out at 83 though. 83 means good btw. Glad plenty of folk like this, pleasure in wine is paramount. I must have at least 60 different Pinot producers from CA in my cellar and KB is the most consistant achiever of dissappointment to me. Blind tasting this I would bust as elegance is never on the horizon with these. Happy they are in others cellars.

Didn't have the vibrance as the younger KB's i've had in the past but still delicious. Sweet red fruits, some green stems, good spices and acids. drank these at a dinner party so no notes. it was a bit of a let down when served as the nose seemed to have lost some of its complexity. the tannins seem very soft and this vintage still seems to be an early drinking wine, as the 07 and 09 will take many more years to be ready. overall very good, just not up to par with previous expeiriences.

Went up a bit from 90 to 92 as this wine drank better this time around. Still the soft red and black fruit with some vanilla. A hint of meat but the slight smoke wasn't present in this bottle as much as the last. Palate very soft. Complex but not nearly the complexity of the 2007. Soft, lingering finish. Drink now and over the next 3-4 years.

A down year for the Sonoma KB. Still with soft, luscious fruit mostly on the red and dark side with a bit of cola but there was definitely some smoke/meat here - smoke exposure from 2008 fires? Complexity was not quite as deep. Nice finish.

Very smooth, with red cherry dominating the palate. A bit of oak on the midpalate and plenty of alcoholic heat. Over time it developed a little peppery spice. Enjoyable, but we just got back from 4 days of tasting pinots in Oregon and I find myself missing that earthy forest floor and mushroom element in this wine. Maybe I'm becoming an Oregon guy. Better start watching Portlandia.

I wanted to LOVE this wine. It was my first bottle of KB after waiting two years to get on the mailing list. Don't get me wrong, the wine is very nice: beautiful nose, rosy color, lip-smacking tartness. Great finish. But I've had all this before in far less expensive wines. I hope the 08/09 RRVs I have don't disappoint.

As a California Pinot fan, I was very excited to receive my first shippment of Kosta Brown. It certainly did not disappoint. The nose was very soft, almost artificial sweet red candy, but opened up nicely to a typical Pinot blend of Red fruit and forest floor. the mouthfeel was very smooth and coating with succulent strawberry and sweet/sour cheery. Mid palate carried the fruit on sweet fine grained tannins. The finish was OK, but acidity was low, and not very long.....All in all, a terriffic premium Pinot that takes it's place beside it's Aubert, Kistler and Marcassin peers.

less vibrant than the RRV but still nicely presented with typical Sonoma fruit profile and spice; more crisp but also more heat than the RRV. Liked both 2008s better than their 2007s compatriots at this point in their lifespans

Opened not decanted. Showing a little clarity at the edge of the glass. Cherry red in color. Dry and spicy attack on the entry with dark tastes of caramel and cola on the mid-palate; ends with a slightly hot finish with black citrus notes. Good.

Popped and poured. Medium bodied, dark cherry, smooth and silky but sturdy, floral, just enough structure to stand up. Lovely expression of Pinot Noir.

Nice wine but not the block buster that the 04 was, still young and tight but some fruit poking through and decent complexity. Definitely letting the others rest.

Delicious, candy masquerading as wine...Really sweet and ripe but with enough pinot typicity and complexity to be very interesting. There is some welcome acidity on the palate to give some definition to the sweet red and blackherry fruit.

Our first bottle of KB after making the appellation mailing list last year. Drank over three nights mainly because that is as fast as we could go. This style of pinot is just too big for us. Hoped to see some more complexity appear over the successive nights but no such luck. I will pass on this year's allocation and leave it for those who enjoy this style of wine more than we do.

Pinot BYO (kkwine cellar): Overall a quite sweet style of pinot noir in a very american style. Really liked it but it didn't impress me to much but it was perhaps a bit closed.

Tasting much better now with about 8 months in the bottle from the last one I opened - much more in balance - a silky feminine pinot- floral and cherry flavors - hint of spice - with a nice finish - should continue to get better with more time.

Decanted an hour or so and drank over the next 3. Nose of cherries and vanilla. Add some spice and lots of oak to the taste and thats that. Terrific mouth feel leads to light tannins and low acidity on finish. Enjoyable for sure but not sure if it will integrate further, I hope it will.

Popped and poured, tasted over 3 hours. Beautiful ruby red color. Both the nose and the palate were strong with wonderful fruit, though surprisingly the fruit tended more towards the dark fruits (lots of black cherry). Delicious wine. While young, the wine was quite balanced. KB is what it is, and when you like this style of wine (if even only on occassion) and it is hitting on all cylinders, it is a great wine.

I must agree with other taster. Significant smoke taint. Not in the nose but on the palate. Shame. Had nice bright fruit which I love along with a slight spiciness. I did not experience any distracting heat. Great wine with bacon. Score withheld.

Probably drank too young. Medium weight, nice red fruits, nice acidity. It was quite popular on Turkey Day. Drank next to William Selyem '08 Sonoma Coast - this wine was much more enjoyable.

Creamy vanilla, damson and strawberry fruit follows a powerful sous bois nose. Good weight in the middle, with a slightly bitter tannic grip near the backend. Finishes long, repeating damp soil and mushroom notes.

Possible smoke taint. Smelled like campfire and tasted like smoky BBQ. Hopefully my one remaining bottle did not suffer the same fate. Family preferred the '07 Papapietro Perry Leras pinot on this night.
Strange. This seemed "lighter weight" than a traditional KB, but picked up weight with air. Beautiful aromatics like a ripe 1er cru Vosne, with ripe cherry-raspberry flavors in just the right balance with tannins and acidity. A bit of sweetness (ripeness?) stood out, but all in all a wonderfully balanced wine with just the right nuances. Did I detect a bit of smoky oak? Yum. Serve at cellar temperature.

A bit rougher and hotter than the single-vineyard Keefer that we opened along with it, but still a delicious wine. Red fruit flavors (especially cherry) dominate. A little lighter-bodied than other KB wines I've had in the past.

Taste at Elysian. Spice driven wine with some solid earthy and plump fruit characteristics. Nice lighter baking spices up front coupled with zesty plums, mocha and earth. Layered expression of Sonoma Pinot Noir - excellent high end example. The finish shows wonderful balance sporting an opulent well endowed mouth feel. Solid alcohol with tannins that weren't afraid to (only slightly) show their face. Beautiful feminine bottling that should age well for a decade or so.

Not sure what everyone else was drinking but at this point this was an over-oaked hot mess and bar none the worst bottle of KB I've had thus far. Maybe my tastes are changing but I really didn't care for this. It was lacking much of that wonderful KB spice on the nose which I have become so accustomed to. The fruit was there but somewhat hidden behind the oak and the lingering alcohol that this displayed. It did get a touch better after a couple hours but I'll definately hold these before I try another.

14.6% alcohol. Bright black cherry color. Beautiful nose of cherry pie, a touch of oak, spice, and minerals. In the mouth, concentrated and very lively, with slightly jammy cherry pie and black cherry fruit. The oak is a pretty lively presence here, with baking spice and earth. Good acidic kick and no heat on the finish. An excellent picture of a lively, youthful Pinot that gives you a tangy, satisfying drink. A-

Popped and poured 15 minutes before a roast tenderloin dinner. No decanting. Lovely, bright red color with a translucent edge. Sweet cherries, tart cherries, black cherries, raspberries, raisin, pepper, vanilla and some earth in a lively, young fruit collection. Multi-layered. Moderate acidity and low tannins, well-balanced. We followed this with a 20 year old Lynch Bages that was wonderful, but was definitely 2d in everyone's mind.

Decanted for two hours. Still young, and at first a little hollow on the finish, but things filled in with time in the air. Vibrant cherry fruit with some cola and spice. It seemed light on its feet after the big earthy Oregon pinot that preceded it.

Lunch at Bouchon Restaurant in Napa. I had a 375ml bottle of this stuff, the first time I've tried Kosta Browne, and I was quite pleased. It paired well with my Steak Frites lunch and was a smoky Pinot that has subtle earthy notes and silky tannins. It didn't blow me away, which is exactly the sort of wine I was hoping for at the time.

I was really looking forward to this bottle, as this was the first bottle that I was going to open that I was finally able to purchase from the winery directly. We were tasting this next to the 07 Kanzler Pinot and I had really high hopes for this wine. The nose had aromas of red fruits with notes of stems, spices and orange rind. The palate had cherry, raspberry and plum flavors with nuances of spices, and some greenish flavors that just didn't seem to fit very well. Medium to full bodied with a medium-long finish. This was outclassed by the 07 Kanzler, and the Schrader Experimental Lot was more exciting to taste as well. I'll let my others sit for a while before revisiting.

Opened and poured, this wine (at times) showed a clumsy and awkward profile. The aromatics are forward and show black cherry, spice, vanilla and oak notes that fail to become completely harmonious. The color is a dark ruby that is youthful and vibrant. The medium/full bodied palate never fully integrate the rich core of fruit with the underlying structure giving the wine a somewhat unbalance and awkward feel. Hopefully a few years of bottle age will bring all the components together in a more harmonious whole. If this wine resolves the disjointedness, it could easily become outstanding.

Cracked this while I was sorting through spring deliveries. Outstanding wine. Nice dark cherry fruit, already silky tannins and bright acidity. Floral and herbal notes lend some secondary flavors. Nice body to it... not as heavy as previous vintages. Really a nice wine.

Totally closed. dark violet. Hot on the finish. Tons of acid (almost seemed like manipulated with a cup of acid). Oak, burnt fruit. Hope this was just way too young, opened way too early.
Way too early on this one but wow is it ever something special. Lively acidity, beautiful strawberry, cherry, rhubarb flavors oozing out. It packs a punch but should be set down for a while. Mouthfeel was velvety as well. Loved it. Hope the RRV is similar those are the only two I have.

Just received my 2008 allocation this week and I couldn't open one of these fast enough. And, as always, Kosta Browne delivers. It's too young now, but shows a ton of promise. Tart raspberry and trawberry, smoke (i.e. smoked meats, not tobacco smoke) and dirt on the finish. Incredbily well balanced, with all the components working in harmony and such a strak contrast to some of the other wines I've tasted this week. The acidity is also very bright and this wine has a lot of life. I'm not sure if every vintage of Kosta Browne is better than the last, but they all strike a chord with me when I taste them. Another fantastic wine from the boys over at Kosta Browne (now, hopefully, they won't let the acquisition change the quality of the wine).
Medium body, rich, lush, medium cherry fruit, well controlled, some dried herbs and a nice dose of spice through the finish, along with some crisp acidity. A nice SC rendition.

This was a lovely bottle of pinot right out of the bottle. Always one of my favorites I've only got 2 bottles left of the case I purchased. Drinking really well now no reason to wait. Should hold for at least another 2-3 years probably more.

Didn't have the minerality or other complexities of prior bottles but damn does this stuff disappear fast. At $50 bones this is probably the last btl I buy for a while though.

Opened a bottle last night, no decanting and was surprised at how approachable wine already is. Medium red color, tons of red fruit and what I perceive as lower acidity. Not sure of long term aging potential but no need because it is so smooth and wonderful now. Look forward to my next bottle.

Wow, could be wine of the KB Vintage. We will see. Can they do it two years in a row?

Powerful berry and cherry fruit. Should get even better with a few years.

Well balanced
bright acidity

Medium body, rich, lush, medium cherry fruit, well controlled, some dried herbs and a nice dose of spice through the finish, along with some crisp acidity. A nice SC rendition.
