Coravin fun - Bordeaux (My place, Burwood): From Coravin. Ooh! Yeast extract initially, baked black fruits and earth with agitation it's a little spirituous with polished oak, a touch of blackcurrant, plum, cream, plenty of sweet spice. Still primary on the nose. Juicy tends to medium plus intensity acidity, concentrated, dense black fruits, tannins are equally thick and chewy, all persist long with non-intrusive alcohol warmth assisting in carrying the finish. Bolshy. Years required.

Bright vivid, garnet with the touch of orange, and a hint of cloudiness. Mixed berries in the nose with a hint of cream. Soft velvety texture with cream, red berries, a touch of acrid funk, and a long cream and red cherry finish.

Classic Bordeaux to my taste. Decanted for about an hour. Paired it with oxtail stew and roasted squash. The -30C temp outside made the family dinner inside more rustic and cozy.

One hour decant. Fragrant. Black fruit, plum, leather and earth. Medium bodied and balanced. Dusty tannins and a medium length finish. Paired well with pork roast.

Saturday evening in diessenhofen, decant of 1.5h, pairing it with steak de veau in champignon sauce. Deep purple color. Dark cherries, plum, orange touch, vanilla, cream, mushrooms, wet forest floor, cloves, white pepper, mint, touch of coffee. Beautiful nose then 😎. Med acidity, med body, med alcohol, med flavor intensity, dry tannins and med finish. Ripe fruit, eucalyptus and capsicum, mushrooms and wet forest leading to light truffle, lingering minty taste. All very well integrated and not too heavy or over bearing. Complex and drinking excellently tonight. I think the 1-2 hour decant helped this so recommend to do with this beauty.

Coravin fun - 2009 Bordeaux & Random Burgundies (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Slightly green notes join blackcurrant tending to cassis, baked spice, touch of ripe plum, cedar, cream. Juicy, savoury, slightly baked blackcurrant with a savoury underpin, cedar, drying talc textured tannins, slight alcohol warmth on the finish <shrugs>

From 37,5cl, perfect cork, decanted 1 hour, continued to improve in glass. Exactly as recorded here on 27.12.2021, just a little thicker and more clunky on the mid-palate. This is, however, surely just a passing phase on the way to maturity, so a clear 92-93P

Pronounced and evolving aromas of lead pencil, cassis, earth and vanilla. Text book Pauillac aromas at age 12 or so.
Medium plus in body with plenty of structure and freshness. There is excellent concentration (this was slightly more concentrated than a bottle drunk about 3 months ago) and a long finish.
Drinking great now but don't worry about holding for another decade plus in a cold cellar.

Decanter Fine Wine Encounter (The Landmark, London): Slight Brett, quite concentrated and ripe blackcurrant. Thick, savoury, juicy acidity, chalky tannins, black hued fruits. Hmm. Bit on the large side for me. Looks like my remaining bottles might end up at the auction house.

Medium-bodied, elegant, fresh, spicy, and refined, there is a gorgeous sense of purity to the currants on the palate and the touches of flowers of spice add to the complexity. Drink from 2022-2039.

Medium to medium plus ruby in appearance. Basically still opaque.
Classic Pauillac nose of black fruits, vanilla and some tobacco and lead pencil. Still evolving , so the nose may develop further with time.
Medium plus in body with plenty of acidity and tannic structure for a 12 year old or so wine. Good flavor concentration with a finish that tops out at medium plus.
Overall a great wine and even better food wine. Not a "blockbuster" but I could drink this stuff every night.
If stored properly this will last forever, but not sure it will improve significantly.

Very nice, and perhaps better on day 2. Well-balanced, tasty, and with room to run.
I was hoping (dreaming?) for little more Paulliac pencil lead or graphite notes, but this was quite light on those notes. (I understand Clerc Milon is not particularly well-known for such aspects, but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about that. And yes, I do see many - but not most - reviews here do actually call out pencil lead and/or graphite notes, but for me, I just didn't get a lot. Certainly less than, say, Pichon Baron.)

Coravin fun - Bordeaux (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Polished oak, cassis, blackcurrant, cedar, cream, clay, very slight bretty farmyard here. Juicy with black hued fruit, drying, slightly grainy, floury textured tannins, still showing quite primary for me. Feels like it still needs a bit more time.

Compared to the bottle tasted a year ago, still floral and fruity in the nose and less acidic and tannic on the palate, however, still somewhat rigid and tight; overall, 92-93 points at this stage; some improvement for sure but still young to me.

From 37,5cl, exquisite cork, decanted 1 hour. Generous rich, exotic, youthful Pauillac scent, principally cassis, mint, high quality oak - everything you want but don't always get with your lamb chop. Entry almost indecently juicy, with mouthwatering ripe acidity; super redcurrant/blackcurrant/ripe red plum (but in a good way)/blackberry mid-palate with ultra-polished tannins; only on the long, tingling finish do I think that as the tannins resolve further there might be room for improvement. This is just gorgeous right now, and will surely mature beautifully. It all depends what you like, but have no qualms about exploring in 2022!
I don't normally drink red Bordeaux this young, but am so glad to have bought half bottles of many of my favourite Chateaux en primeur in 2009. This easily surpasses the very enjoyable Phélan, d'Angludet, Gloria and d'Armailhac already tasted... Clearly 2009 is as ripe and friendly a vintage as advertised, but without even a hint of the vulgarity and clunkiness of 2003 (boy, did I get burned with my purchases in that vintage).

Medium to medium deep maroon, slight staining. Straight out of cellar, just opened, a bit tight, quite a bit of oak, but nice blackcurrant lurking below. Medium bodied, a bit tight but unfurling. Good acidity, well balanced. Opened up nicely and was a pleasure, nice blackcurrant fruit.

Fabulous. Open up after 1.5 hours. Slow but steady with so much fragrance on the nose. Plum, cassis, fig and more. Full body and tinkle every taste bud in your mouth when u gurgle it. Really long finish too. Wish I had more.

Intense and perfumed nose, dark berries, black cherries, coffee beans, mints, lavenders, and sandalwood; berries, cherries, dark chocolate, sweet tobacco leaves, and wood spices on the acidic, fruity, yet still tannic and tight palate; long finish; overall, 92-93 points at this stage; still young and could evolve further in a few more years, but paired well with Cantonese roast duck at Imperial House restaurant in Taipei.

Delaware BeachHouse Weekend (Rehoboth Beach): A pleasant, straightforward Bordeaux showing red berry fruit with accents of cigar on the nose and more berries on the palate. Didn’t evolve in the glass like some of the better-rated wines in our tasting. But had a classy finish and overall it was a nice package probably worth the investment.

Opened on a friday evening and didn't pair well with rare tuna steaks (not sure what I was thinking). The marinade had lime and fish sauce which completely collided with the acid of this wine. The wine tasted hot and past its prime/disjointed. Tried on its own and with some chocolate afterward and was pretty much the same. Vacu-corked and put back in cellar.
Two nights later with duck breast main and a blueberry pie dessert, this was the sophisticated, generous Pauillac we had been hoping for. The high acidity of the first night was perfectly tolerable with the flavorful duck and blueberries. Deep fruit palate with modest extraction, dry spices and wood flavors, and a long finish. Complexity is medium for a wine of this price point. Have 2 more bottles and interested to see how they evolve. Next time I will go classic for the food pairing.
Tons of fruit and a touch alcoholic on the nose. In deep sleep now, and no one around the table even guessed it was a Bordeaux. Needs many more years until next tasting!

Nose of sweet black fruit and cassis. Same flavors in the mouth, plus a nice saline note and classic cedar and hint of tobacco. Mineral note comes out on the long finish. Best Clerc I have had from this vintage.

Full disclaimer I am not a huge Pauillac fan. Decanted this wine over a 2 hour period. Nice fruit but I detected some edges and by no means was the wine smooth and velvet-like on the palate. I would have rated this 88 to 89 but bumped it up a bit to account for my unfavorable Pauillac bias. More time might help but alas, I have only 2010s left. I imagine that vintage is more accessible.

Woodward Cellar Emptying; 5/15/2020-5/16/2020 (Woodyville): Unintentional, but fun fact, we had all 3 of my bottles with J&K. The scores have been the same for me, but the wine itself is certainly evolving. Great balance and a little more savory. Some classic Pauillac notes that I DO love. Now-2029.

Much more Pauillac than the 09 Armailhac a few days ago. This has the pencil lead and deep dark fruit, not overripe as you might have feared when tasting 09 Bdx a few years back. While the tannins are well integrated with the generous dark fruit, it is not the most aromatic or complex Pauillac as of now. Hopefully this will come with 2-3 more years in bottle, but a very nice to drink and very aristocratic Pauillac already today. 93+

From Coravin. On the nose black over red berries (raspberries and strawberries particularly), a certain saline minerality that lends a touch of austerity, polished oak, cream, Cassis, sweet spice; nutmeg and clove the ones really crying out. And it proves a little austere on the palate; plenty of tannins here that are chalky and grippy with the fruit and other flavours very much playing second fiddle. Hmm. Time will help I'm guessing...

Pretty enjoyable right now, especially with about an hour of slow ox. There is a slight "stem-iness' to the nose, like the green pepper smell on most Pichon Lalande's, but not as strong. It's a little tertiary and there is a touch of heat on the nose, but should develop some secondary nuances in the future. If you drink now, give it an hour or two of air, then enjoy. Probably a 2 point improvement in the next few years, but not much after that. In short, for a 2009 (with ten years of age) that you can pick up for well under $100, it is a good value.

Ten year CdP and Bordeaux retro tasting (with ringers). Hosted by Grinner.
Bordeaux Flight One - Wine Four:
One of the disappointments of the tasting. A highly regarded Third Growth that showed no better than middle of the pack. Considerable barrel char partially masked a green (phenolic ripeness) issue at the back and finish. Unlikely to improve.

Starting to show really well, the wine is fresh, bright, medium-bodied and filled to the brim with sweet, juicy, lifted red fruits, spice box, earth and tobacco leaf. Elegant, soft and refined, the fruit is the right mix of juicy, vibrant, luscious and refined. Still young, you can drink this now with an hour of air, but if you give it another few years, it is going to be even better! 2009 was the first vintage for Jean Emmanuel Danjoy who will be taking over as technical director at Mouton Rothschild.

Glossy ruby. Vibrant. Lots of blue and black crunchy fruit. Lovely fruit forward mouthful but still fresh and interesting light soil, graphite, earth and mineral notes. Nice balance and again energetic, satisfying fruit. No heat, just an exuberant and pleasing wine. Still old world but clean, modern wine making in the best sense. Great QPR at a release price of $45/bt!

Tasted next to a barrel sample of 2018. Expressive, a little exotic and quite complex on the nose. Sweet tobacco, spices, dark fruit, cedar, graphite, liquorice. Good acidity, not as fresh or vibrant than the 2018 sample. Polished tannins, lots of ripe fruit. A little bigger, but still quite elegant and fine. Mineral, persistent finish. Drink or keep. 92-94

Liked this quite a lot. Ripe and fleshy with lots of black and red fruit, oak, cedar wood, and some lighter smoky and pencil lead notes emerging with more air; it's not especially complex yet and still quite primary, but I really like the overall balance here and this worked well with burgers.

Black currant, tobacco, cassis and mineral. There’s dark berries on the palate, which is layered and sails on for awhile. This shows the lavishness of the vintage and an impeccable ability to age’for many years to come through pedigree and backbone. Drink now - 2032.

Coravin fun - Ready to drink (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Meaty, dense, rich, dusty blackcurrant tending to cassis, a little salinity here for me as well and plenty of polished oak; a little vanilla and biscuit poking through. Juicy, fleshy, softly decadent, the most 'complete' wine on the palate I've had so far today. A little savoury tinge to the finish. Long. Very good.

It's a dinner hosted by Chateau Mouton in which served Mouton 1998, Mouton 2005, Le patit Mouton 2008, Clerc Milon 2009, D'Armailhac 2010 and 2011. To me, the best wine is D'Armailhac 2011 and Mouton 2005.
D'Armailhac gives you nice strong wet leather flavor and on palate with a heavy body but quite smooth. Mid finish. 92
Mouton 2005 also gives you leather flaver with more minerality. Smooth and round. Finish is a little bit longer. 92
Actually, the other three are quite similar to Mouton 2005, but not so smooth and so well balanced. Some are more salty, some have more acidity, etc. I give D'Armailhac 2010 -- 91, Clerc Milon 2009-- 91, Peteit Mouton 2008 -- 91, and Mouton 1998 -- 92.

Opened the night before and poured a small glass to add a little air to the bottle. Returned to the cooler overnight. Poured from the bottle to accompany a roast beef grinder. Nice cassis nose. Black cherry with a bit of cassis bite on the palate. Never fully opened up over 2 hours, but it did develop some complexity. Next bottle will get a lengthy decant before serving.

Wow! This is open for business in an early maturity window. This screams Pauillac in every sense. Black currant, black licorice, graphite laced with minerals and sweet Virginia tobacco. Deliciousness! Decanted 30 minutes. While this can age another 20 years, it is hard not to want to drink it now. Great!

Oops! Opened by mistake. But what a lovely wine! Plum and dark fruits, accented by oak and a hint of Brett (not a fan of pronounced Brett but love a hint). Medium body, lots of fruit same fruit plus dark cherry and med+ finish. This wine deserves at least 5h of decant. Initially i tasted lots of cinnamon and it transitioned to a nice silky dark fruit notes. It might be a bit young but I don’t think it will last long. Overall a bit disappointed considering the vintage.

93 poeng. For nå.

Definetly old school with black fruit, full body and no disturbing oak. The fruit has settled since my previous tasting just a few months ago. While very drinkable, this would gain on an extensive decant or 5 years or so in the cellar. Could potentially reach 93-95 pts.

First of the reds for the Non-Napa Bordeaux tasting. Deep ruby red with garnet edges. Nose made it seem a lot older than an 09. Notes of forest floor, damp leaves, truffles, plums and dark cocoa on the nose. A little bit of heat that will hopefully blow over with time. Moderate tannins (6/10) with a bit of acidity. Full bodied with a bit of heat and dark cherries. Long finish. Drink from 2018 till 2028.

From half bottle. Decanted for 20 minutes. Really immediately accessible with really nice primary fruit of blueberries and blackberries. Nice moreish wine to drink with the oak nicely in the background (as opposed to the Duhart Milon 2009 which in my view is undrinkable at this stage still). I do really like this though I wonder how much complexity it will develop ultimately. However, given that I experienced a beautiful Clerc Milon 1990 around a year ago (scored 95 points) it could very well turn out a great surprise. Drink now (at least from 375mln bottle) or hold till 2030.

Dark ruby. A very smooth wine which is surprizing given pauillac appelation, more like margeaux. Full bodied, a lot of fruit - borad flavours without a single one dominating- with medium acidity and tannins which are smooth. Very harmonious. A very well made wine but maybe 2009 was too sunny, curious how the 2010 would compare, could deserve a 95.
Not rating had at dinner friend brought we new it would be young started with a 2009 cab. The clerc was tight and buttoned up the whole dinner saw some signs of potential after two hours but it never arrived for dinners. If you are drinking now I would open for a long time or double decant

1-hour decant; slightly sweet violet and plum aromatics; med-weight and rather well-balanced 'young' Bdx. Pleasing combination of fruit, tobacco, leather and light spice with a great finish. It's all in there...great wine with a Capital Grille Porterhouse.
J & K Anniversary Wine Night (Joe's Bar and Grill): Decanted about an hour, this was SO classic / typical Pauillac. I love it. The crème de cassis, sweet tobacco, and cedar just pop! Then it adds cocoa, spice, and a floral note. Drinking this outside by the fire, the long, tannic finish rides off into the sunset...then we saw Saturn and Mars! Best 2017-2029.
This was so good. Lush and velvety, surprisingly open right now(friend opened a bottle of this that has been sitting at only slightly below room temperature for the past 2 years - maybe this is slightly advanced due to poorer storage conditions). Beautiful Pauillac nose, ripe black and red fruits, soft and inviting. Lovely on the palate with velvety and sweet tannins. Really enjoyed this bottle. Excited to try this again in the future.

From 375mln bottle consumed in The Square (1 hour decant). Readily accessible upon pouring - proved a great "diplomat" in the glass, nothing in excess, symmetrical, not too much heat/alcohol, good fruit. Compared to the stablemate Duhart Milon 2009 a lot less oak and drinking well already (I must confess I am still on the fence / worried about all those bottles of Duhart Milon 2009 that I have). Some good Pauillac typicity. A safe bet! (92+) As a side note had in Zalto glasses which are growing on my btw (as compared to Riedel)... PS: I found it maybe just a tiny notch behind a Kirwan 2009 I had the next night (the Kirwan was from 750mln bottle though and longer decant), the Kirwan seemed to have half an extra gear.

2015 New York Wine Experience Trip; 10/19/2015-10/27/2015 (New York City, NY): This medium ruby, medium-bodied wine is already drinking well. A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Carmenère, it offers ripe black currants, fig, tobacco, dark chocolate and earth on both the nose and palate. Medium acidity, seamless alcohol and supple tannins give this wine a soft mouth texture. Solid in the middle and closing medium-to-long, it is should provide pleasure over the next two decades. This is one that I doubt will ever "shut down." Drink now-2035.

Like f22nickell, I had this at the CT SEA tasting group with the Bdx theme - but it came from my cellar. It was double decanted prior to the tasting, some sediment in the bottle. Very dark color, medium body, but the taste was muted for me with lots of mushrooms, cigar box, and leather. I had it as 5th of the 9 in the tasting. I agree that this can become much better, but think this is headed towards "satisfying" not "wow".

Seattle Wine Group - Sep 2015 Tasting - Theme: BDX - 2009 vs. Pre-2000 (Amaroso Room - Wine Storage Bellevue): Nose had deep intense red/blue fruit, pencil lead, graphite, hint of chocolate; gave 'steely' impression. Palate followed the nose, nice and deep; a bit bitter but elegant tannins. A bit dry on the finish and not that complex; lots of fruit and power. However, to me, this wine screamed "potential." This is one bottle I differed dramatically from the group consensus.

Blackcurrant over slight red currant and herbaceous notes, spice. In the mouth slightly sour black fruit, quite savoury, a youthful, slightly austere, good quality Bordeaux but a bit un-2009 for me i.e. I'd expect this wine to be a bit more fruit forward. This is in no way a criticism.

With a ruby hue, the Asian spice, smoke, spice and cigar box aromas are easily found. Silky, soft and polished, there is a sense of refinement in the fruit along with a slight chocolate sensation. The fresh, ripe character of the fruit in the finish make this a vintage for early drinking, or one that consumers can age. 2009 was the first vintage for the new director, Jean Emmanuel Danjoy.

Rather intense nose of forest fruit and matchbox. Med. body. A bit rustic on the palate. Dark berries, coffee, refreshing acidity, good concentration, some minerality, but slightly disjointed, out of harmony. A touch sharp finish. Long, tannic, coffee, rather fresh aftertaste.

Coffee, licorice, truffle, blackberry and tobacco scents lead to a lush, sweet, round and ripe wine that delivers sweet black cherries and spice and soft, plush textures.

Tight on opening but loosened up a little over 24 hours. Quite restrained and elegant for the vintage, but lovely balance between medium-weight red fruit and fine tannins. No blockbuster, but certainly one to wait on, as there is plenty of fruit and tannin to soften up and integrate over 5-10 years.

Cedar, cassis, tobacco, blackberry, earth and spice aromas were all over the place. This blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Carmenère creates a wine that combines freshness, clean fruit, cassis and round tannins. There is ample concentration of raw materials to allow the wine and evolve, yet it will drink well young.

2009 Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux Tasting; 1/27/2012-1/31/2012 (Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Chicago, Illinois): 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Carmenère (the only Bordeaux at the tasting which still used this grape as far as I know). Loved the 2003, disappointed in the 2005, the 2009 is an excellent rebound for this 5th growth estate. Notes of graphite, black fruit and boysenberry with some cedar on the finish. Medium to full bodied. Firm tannins. 92-94 points.

After slipping in the 2008 UGC tasting, the 2009 Clerc Milon rounds back into form to beat out stablemate Chateau d'Armailhac - a little fuller, slightly higher quality fruit here with a touch of damp earth. Palate doesn't quite live up to the perfumey nose, but still a good claret. I might still prefer the 2005. Has a slightly tart acidity like some of the other Pauillacs today. 92-93

UGC 2009 Bordeaux Tasting - NYC - 1.25.12 (New York City): Not quite as impressive as the GPL, lacking some excitement. Clerc seems to nail a balance between classic Pauillac and modern fruit very well and the 09 is no different. Should be approachable younger than many of its peers. (91-93)

2009 Clerc Milon, with its cassis, oak, caramel, and dark berry scented perfume, is inviting. This full bodied wine ends with boysenberries, cassis, and spice. This lighter style of Pauillac has not always been my favorite because of lack of concentration. 2009 is a big step forward. This is a very nice wine. 91/93 Pts

Brought this wine to Lao Beijing for a wine dinner. Theme of the evening: Super Tuscan wines with no Sangiovese, 2010 or older, $120 and above.
Decanted for an hour. Brickish-purple, with a nose that presented youthful notes. Sweet, powerful attack with a mellow midpalate.
A little disjointed at this point. May need more time in the bottle for the elements to come together nicely.

Deep ruby in appearance- still opaque.

I would have rated this 88 to 89 but bumped it up a bit to account for my unfavorable Pauillac bias. More time might help but alas, I have only 2010s left. I imagine that vintage is more accessible.

Oops! Opened by mistake. But what a lovely wine! Plum and dark fruits, accented by oak and a hint of Brett (not a fan of pronounced Brett but love a hint). Medium body, lots of fruit same fruit plus dark cherry and med+ finish. This is great now so if you have more than one bottle and like your Bordeaux on the upswing rather than the downslide, try it now.

This wine deserves at least 5h of decant. Initially i tasted lots of cinnamon and it transitioned to a nice silky dark fruit notes.
It might be a bit young but I don’t think it will last long. Overall a bit disappointed considering the vintage.

93 poeng. For nå.

The fruit has settled since my previous tasting just a few months ago. While very drinkable, this would gain on an extensive decant or 5 years or so in the cellar. Could potentially reach 93-95 pts.

The fresh, ripe character of the fruit in the finish make this a vintage for early drinking, or one that consumers can age. 2009 was the first vintage for the new director, Jean Emmanuel Danjoy.
