M&PD Tasting: Westward (Seattle, WA, USA): Funk, deep, silky, so vibrant, red fruit, coming back to more notes of the silky, enveloping palate. With more air some mushroomy forest floor and distinct pine forest notes come out.

A fairly deep colour, mature, garnet; full and concentrated on the nose and palate, with an array of flavours (dried fruit, orange peel, cinnamon), intense and very long. It may be showing its age now, but it just kept growing in the glass, becoming livelier with time. A great wine.

Corton Charlemagne and Rousseau Chambertin: The least impressive of our quartet (91,01,02,05) and therefore the biggest disappointment. It was strict and closed relative to many fantastic bottles I've enjoyed over the years. Nothing particular seemed off, it just was "fine". Probably the bottle. Decanted briefly around 5pm, then enjoyed over a three hour dinner.

Pre-2002 Rousseau Dinner (WS NYC): Surprisingly was drinking much more beautifully than the '95. I just love the '01 vintage. Open and ready for business with lovely red fruits.

Medium ruby with a dynamic nose of dried cranberries and rose petals. Expansive palate of thick Chelan cherries with a grippy mineral undercurrent, expanding into subtle white cedar notes on a robust smoke inflicted finish. Sensational with 14 hour Hickory home smoked Boston Butt for pulled pork sandwiches. Just starting to open up and a smart buy for the future. Best 2025-2048.

Armand Rousseau Chambertin Dinner (State Street Manor - Chicago IL): Wine of the Night. Powerful and dense with gracefully maturing black fruit. Not particularly ripe, but this manages to seem wonderfully rich and meaty. Long, lingering, elegant and seamless finish. Single blind alongside 2001 Chambertin-Clos de Beze. I correctly identified this based on a powerful character vs the Chambertin-Clos de Beze's spicier nature.

Drinking well with a decant, showing a decadent nose of cherries and light floral notes, hint of secondary flavours with a great structure and Long finish if sandlewood, cedar and tobacco. Can only get better with a little more cellar time.

Fun to taste this blind - the nose immediately suggested Rousseau GC but the clean and elegant the palate (without much game) made me second guess that and wonder if we were in Chambolle instead! Wonderfully deep and impactful. 96-7

cherry, spice, long delicious grainy tannin. Bit of rusticity Showing more secondary. Charred oak on the nose. Definitely off bottle as it got more faded as the night went on. The 01 is usually a standout

An emotional, special wine. Ethereal and complex aromatic, blue fruits, violets, spices, sap, dekicate yet profound, fans out, the nostrils flare. Light bodied, still a dense yet weightless red and blue fruit core, great persistence, fine acid, filigreed tannins, finishes silky and then the crescendo, the peacocks's tail. Still plenty left for further development in the cellar, but very enjoyable now.

Most Chambertin I’ve tried in and around this vintage have not been near their drinking window so this was a pleasant surprise. Not as young as I’d have guessed (you see this with slight bricking) it’s in a perfect spot to consume and I suspect it will stay here for quite some time. Very aromatic, complex and even succulent. 95-96. Thx to ODM

A modestly advanced bottle that while displaying quality purple fruit, did not have the complexity of the best bottles. Short on spice notes in particular. 93-

Really terrific Rousseau Chambertin; needs an hour or so to open but when it does, the combination of elegant, pure cherry, mineral-inflected fruit with the slightly rugged, roasted woodcock, smoky aspect makes it irresistible. Starting to drink brilliantly now, but will please for decades; its best days are likely ahead.

Acker BYO 2018 (Tribeca Grille): Two burgs in a row that I liked but I guess that happens when you're talking about wines of this caliber. It's really quite a lovely wine. Very bright and light and more herbal. A slight ethereal note to it. Very tasty.

Just lovely; needs some air to come around but already showing a big, deeply pitched, tart griotte cherry nose with loam, hints of grilled game, just a little (appealing) funk, and a chanterelle-like delicate earthiness. Cleaner than most Chambertin. Beautiful weight, really - dances across the palate. A fine marriage of elegance and power. 95-96

2001 Red Burgundy at Chez Hugo (Chez Hugo, Baltimore): Earthy and mineral, with some undergrowth/moss at first. It's savory more than dark pinot fruit on the nose to start. A more introspective nose than the wide open inviting Clos St Jacques. On the palate, a serious thought provoking wine of consequence, with wonderful sap and density delivered with grace. The soil and fruit in great balance on the palate. More gravitas and depth than the Clos St Jacques, yet also a bit less giving at this point. Deep and intense yet all this power delivered with grace and while I do not want to cal lit a soft touch, it has terrific finesse. Great structure and balance, and I suspect it may be the better wine in a decade, the Clos St Jacques is the wine at its peak. Wonderful wine.

2001 Red Burgundy Retrospective (Chez Hugo - Baltimore): Another perfectly mature nose displaying dense and deeply toned decadent black fruit, blackberry, a hint of raspberry jam, Chinese medicine, caramel, a hint of sous bois, sweet spices, dark flowers and earth. Exceptional balance and finesse, very finely layered decadent yet pure black fruit, silky and fluid, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, nicely integrated tannins and a long decadent black fruit driven finish. Perhaps slightly less expressive than the CSJ but showing greater concentration and depth. Exceptional showing!

Coche and Rousseau Dinner (RPM Steak - Chicago, IL): Tasted in a 89/93/01 flight. A bit grumpy and closed in relative to the signing '89 and '93 tasted in the same flight. Firm and tight with wound up rich, concentrated and primary. Not yet showing its stuff. Upside from here in 5-10 years.

Coche-Dury and Domaine Rousseau Dinner (RPM Steak - Chicago IL): Hard as nails to start, so we gave this an hour in a decanter, then served following the 1989/ 1993 pairing. Dense and meaty, like the older vintages just tasted, but backward. Better to cellar for another decade, 92-93+ point potential.

Coche, Rousseau and more (RPM Steak): Decanted for about 1-2 hours. Firm, large scale wine with dense black fruits. Loads of potential here, but comes across quite young and almost a bit closed. Especially true next to its older siblings on this night. Suggest sitting on this for another 5 years based on this bottle to get more subtle complexities. Still a very regal drink even today.

Light to medium depth of colour with a fairly dark hue; an array of mainly red fruit flavours, strawberry, raspberry and redcurrant, plus some black cherry, vanilla and savoury notes. Very elegant, harmonious and long. A little more weight and it would be truly great.

While not the best vintage of Rousseau it’s an excellent wine that beats all comers from other makers. Rich, balanced, Long and luscious. It’s a delight. It may be comparable to the 91 in 10 years

Brought to Spain to share with a dear friend. I was worried about travel shock, and I think the wine did suffer just a bit. It could be my expectations impacting my impressions, though. Upon opening, the nose was immediately expressive, if dominated by some oak. With some air, a highly complex melange of aromas emerged, showing brambly black and red fruit, spicy gingerbread, violets, wet cedar and slightly candied orange peel. In the mouth, it displayed great persistence, rolling over the tongue seamlessly, bringing in more of the violets and briar. The balance was exquisite - nothing out of place, though nothing blockbuster, with a well defined and feminine structure. Pretty much what I'd expect from a 2001. It was best with about 2 hours of air, and started to dissipate after 3. Not quite the showing I'd hoped for, but still a great wine and a joy to drink. I shouldn't travel with these beauties - they just never show their best. Still, it was a treat to be able to share it.

Drank alongside the 01 Beze. Also slow ox'd for 12 hours. This was noticeably prettier and more elegant on the nose and palate than the Beze. So pure but with wonderful length and persistence. This was still tannic but not awkwardly so. Will undoubtedly improve but is approachable now with a good decant.

Dinner at the Bannockburn Hotel (near Cromwell, Central Otago): This is a superb Burgundy. Everyone agreed it was the WOTN. Relatively pale colour. It was beautiful on opening but filled out and improved by the time it was served. A wonderful bouquet of spices, musk, blossoms and red and black cherries. On palate, a perfect balance of elegance and refinement and latent power. Drinking beautifully now but with years ahead of it. One of my wines of the year so far.

Night two: No more rain but a lot more Rousseau - a story of Fred's birthday in Orange County (J Zhou): Piercing bright fresh fruit on the nose that explodes out of the glass. I just kept going back to it as the bouquet just grew more and more expressive. The palate was filled with crushed red berry fruit and earth/spice and piercingly long finish. So So good. It's still very youthful and will develop for a long time, but no harm in trying one today

An unusual wine experience. Well, not that unusual. First opened, seemingly thin and lacking in stuffing. The chunked Parmesan e we're drinking it with overwhelmed it! And then... cherries... tarriness... raspberries? Redness for sure with an undercurrent of acidity and very soft but recognizable tannin. Kind of young, kind of now, kind of new kind of wow! If it were perfume, it would be scent rather than odor. In the best Burgundian way, it tastes like a great grapey old wine cellar smells: wild and restrained at the same time. Elegant, but savage. Man... just yummy. And no hurry, either. Not a hint of overdone-ness or brickiness. Maybe 95 is conservative. Definitely recommend decanting and aerating, by the way...

Annual Chicago winos visit - Pearl Clutcher, coche, drc, rousseau, D'Yquem and etc. (The Grill Room at Rosewood DC): The beauty of Rousseau wines, especial Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Beze, is the beautiful interplay of finesse and power. The wines can be quite energetic and intense yet air and weightless. The most enjoyable and ready wine of the flight. Perfectly harmonious elegant nose displaying decadent red and black fruits, essence of raspberry and blackberry, cinnamon, Asian spices, sous bois, light caramel and rose. Perfect integrated harmonious palate, silky and weightless, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a seamless long finish with sweet spices and raspberry as the end note. Drinking incredibly well, essence of Burgundy!

Wine Dinner Extravaganza (Rosewood Hotel Dining Room - Washington DC): Lots of ripe black cherry with red hints, lots of spice and roast meat. Perfect balance, moderate+ length and power (for Rousseau Chambertin). A small gathering at Prequel (Prequel - Washington DC): Pop and pour, incredibly expressive, fully mature nose displaying perfectly ripe intensely sweet black and red fruits, blackberry jelly, a hint of raspberry, Asian spices, sous bois, dark flowers, limestone, a hint of black truffle and earth. Excellent concentration, beautifully layered dark fruits and spices, silky and polished, perfect amount of acidity, no noticeable tannins and beautiful long finish with decadent black fruit and spices at the end. I love the elegant yet intense palate impression of Rousseau and this is no exception. Really serious yet incredibly delicious. This is the most youthful example of this wine. [IWFS-Vic Top Burgundy Grand Crus Dinner at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, Melbourne] Translucent medium crimson-purple. Violet-scented black & red cherry bouquet with suggestions of wet soil, mineral, spice & a touch of BF creamy oak. Medium plus, moderately concentrated but rather deep & intense, ample & broad black & red fruits superbly interlaced with the supple ripe tannins, powdery dry extracts & fine acidity present & continuing on a slow evolution process as demonstrated by the very recent emergence of secondary nuances of meat, game & leather. Long delicate & persistent finish with a creamy twist.

This started out with the nose of the night with candied red fruit, spice and some blue fruit notes with subtle truffle and earth. The palate was more linear than the 2002 but the vibrancy and primary nature of the fruit was really delicious. After a few hours this seemed more simple compared to the 02 and 96, but still tasty.

took 20 to thirty minutes to come out of its shell but when it did the nose was striking on how harmonious it was. Black berries, roses, and earth. This wine was elegant while still being very masculine and rich. it continued to develop over the next 2 hours of drinking and the last sip lasted in my mouth long after it was gone. IMHO just starting to enter what will be a long and improving drinking window. Wish I had more.

The Godfather Turns Sixty: Go Big or Go Home - Rousseau, Margaux, Lynch, a Trio '02 Champagnes and More! (La Belle Vie, Mpls): Medium red color with thinning on the margins, lighter than the Beze. 70ml pour over 2 hours. This bottle was more restrained than a bottle a couple months ago, tighter and not wanting to share as much, still showing the Grand Cru depth on the palate. The nose shows dried forest floor, mushroom, floral, fennel seed, dried spices. The palate is medium bodied, but deep and intense with layered fruit and a dense mineral base, exotic spice, vibrant, black cherry, and well integrated tannins. Really, really good, just drinking younger and more restrained tonight in comparison to the Beze and a previous bottle. Seems to beg for more time.

My second go at this beauty (the first was over five years ago). As great as it was then, it is even greater now. The color is a pure red. The nose delivers thrilling aromas of red fruit and spice. Equally great on the palate, with beautiful red fruit and spice and a flawless texture -- the epitome of elegance in a wine. Flavors burst across the palate from the initial attack through the long, lingering (and very satisfying) finish. This is drinking really well now, but should go from strength to strength for many more years now. Thanks so much to Siggy for sharing this beautiful wine!

2001 Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru Dinner (Kheam Hock Road): Wow. As good as the wines in the previous flights were, there was an immediate step-up in class once we reached the Rousseau Chambertin and Beze pair. What a wonderful nose this had, with dried earth and spice, deep draws of red cherries and flowers, and then a hint of fresh herb and a bit of menthol. An entrancing bouquet, but it was really on the palate where the wine took-off. This was just wonderful, sinewy and graceful at the same time as a great Chambertin should be, it married juicy acidity and a strong structure of fine tannins strong to beautifully pure flavours of red cherries and berries, orange peel and a little bit of earth, all perfectly packed into a beautifully integrated whole. The finish was long and graceful, filling the mouth in a seemingly neverending flow of Gevrey goodness. This was a tremendous wine – deep and powerful, yet effortlessly elegant, showing a wonderful clarity throughout. It is almost there I think, just needing that little bit of time to gain some complexity and to push it into greatness. I would love to drink this again in say 3-4 years. 95+

Great wine. Slight bit of heat being the only really detractor. About as elegant as wine gets. Incredible mix of power and weightlessness. This has that "ethereal" characteristic that is used to describe some Burgundies. Probably better yet 2016+.

Absolutely spectacular. Hard to put this one into words. Soaring aromas from the moment the cork was pulled - an array of red fruits, spice, flowers, savoury earthy notes and a more dusty/rocky minerally aspect, and with air it just keeps getting more complex. The palate presence is incredible. So broad and expansive on the palate with incredible intensity of flavour, yet all the while having an amazing lightness of touch. Monumental.

Dark ruby red, hint of aging at the edges. Really dark and mystical stuff. Nose is fresh and full of secondary aromas of fresh forest and mushrooms, as well as some primary slightly dried fruit. A very gentle and perfectly elegant nose.
Palate is stunning. This is without a doubt the most powerful pinot I have ever tasted. This wine stands out and is clearly the best of the 8 monsterwines in our blind lineup. Crushes the DRC Echezeaux '98 by a mile. Turnes the Rousseau Clos de Beze '01 into a small boy compared to this.
Intense power and grip of the tongue which lasts and lasts and lasts. This stuff is really something I need to get my hands on again. Good heavens.

I drank this a few years ago and recall it being outstanding. This bottle, however, was quite closed and a bit awkward. Serious power and dark fruit that was being held back, a minty note, spice and earth. All quite subdued. I will try another one in a few years.

Armand Rousseau Dinner (Paris Club - Chicago, IL): Incredibly young wine that packs a lot of potential. A dark fruit profile here with lots of spice, earth and floral notes on the nose. Sadly, the nose and palate were a bit shutdown. Did my best to hold this wine until the end of the night, but it never developed that rich pinot profile you're looking for. Hold for, well, a long time.

Medium red in color, nose of dark red fruit and interestingly a bit of mean greenies which reminded me of 04 burgs. Palate is well balanced but lack complexity or drive. Didn't wowed us at all after 3 hours in our glasses. Is it just this bottle? Hope to revisit this again.

Birthday Celebration (Chicago, IL): Lots of bold, mostly black fruit to start. Good spice aromas as well, oak still a bit pronounced. Palate again has lots of black fruit, but this didn't come across and yet integrated, with the oak, acidity and fruit each coming across distinctly vs. as a harmonious package. There were some reasonable differences of opinion on this wine tonight. I think it has great raw material, 92-94 point potential, but not tonight.

Baltimorean and one dcwino in NYC – Part 2 French at Corton: Interesting story to the bottle. This was purchase at a HK auction of ACM while I was participating a Grand Jury Europeen session there and subsequently shipped back ending up in the nation’s capital. Upon opening, incredibly expressive nose.
At the dinner the nose hasn’t changed much, floral, caramel, raspberry extract, cinnamon, jasmine tea and asian spices. The palate is light and soft as the tannins are fully integrated. This is not unlike a Truchot, deceivingly soft and light yet the nose is incredibly intense. It is the wine equivalent of the Corton’s incredible dishes.

Absolutely breathtaking purity of dense layered berry fruit, it's just waves and waves of cherries, wild berries perfectly balanced and just lingers on the palate. The flavors seem easy to express when they are floating in my head but words really can't describe just how complex and balanced the flavors are on the palate. Just thinking of the purity of fruit is making me drool. It's just such a clean and pure drink that doesn't need anything else but its structure and fruit to show off how superb of a wine it is. There weren't any interfering tannins, wasn't heavily concentrated, just a great drink.

The Big Two (Bar Boulud): Closed on the nose at first but develops that gravelly rock quarry scent with time in the glass and is a veritable mouthful of crushed stone on the palate. Blackberries and cranberries and flowers and something intensely metallic, like it's laced with iron, and all that mineral stuff was actually more powerful than the fruit. In concentration it might be more mild than the Bèze but I'm not sure it was as refined. Tough to choose a favorite. Glad we had them both.

Decanted and started to drink immediately. Intense bright cherry, pomegranate, fresh, balanced, but the strong acidity of 2001 was quite clear, but not taking anything away. Spicy, and rich in that unique Rousseau way. This is a great wine, drinking great now, but will last a long time and I suspect put on weight as the fruit is there to balance the acidity as it tempers. I would taste when opened and give it an hour or so if you drink now.

Wine Dinner at 12B (Vancouver, BC): Opened one hour before pouring. Medium red in colour. Wow—what a nose! Pronounced and enticing with notes of funk, earth, cinnamon hearts and pure red fruits with well-integrated oak. After more coaxing hints of mushrooms and spice. In the mouth there are loads of pure red fruits with some leather and meaty flavours too. The texture is silky and the profile is somewhat masculine while being so elegant and pure at the same time. There is a great amount of acid with firm tannins and an incredibly long finish. This is a great young burg that offers finesse, intensity and lots of complexity. Drinking shockingly well at this stage but this wine will be even better in 5-10+ years. Exceptional. 95+

Weightless but intense. This needed to open for at least an hour but when it opened, OMG! The nose was enticing and similar to the Clos de Beze but this was slightly more refined so it seemed to have more finesse. Your palate was completely full without any heaviness. The sensation was one of weightlessness. There was a fine structure for the layers of tar, red fruit, truffles and underbrush, all in incredible balance with the minerals and acid.

Great tasting Domaine Armand Rousseau (De Librije(***), Zwolle, The Netherlands): At first a little "salty" nose and a little alcoholic, a little bitter. This was undoubtedly influenced by the previous flight (2007), because that year is só fruity. This is more built on minerality and terroir. After more than an hour this really showed it's worth. Tasting Group Dinner - It Was A Great Run (Heidi's, Minneapolis): Classic Chambertin personality -- beefy and masculine, yet sleek and floral. Complex and gorgeously expressive layers of red fruit, spice box, and roasted meat. Deft oak treatment. Medium weight, with a long finish that picks up additional sous bois/mushroom nuances. Rousseau seems to have really over-achieved in this vintage. Will undoubtedly benefit from additional cellaring.

Groundhog Day!: Not sure when this was opened, but it was thrilling from the first pour. Pure red color but considerably lighter than the Arnoux Suchots. The nose delivers charming aromas of red fruit with spice that are expressive and surprisingly clean/pure. In the mouth this delivers beautiful red fruit bordering on candied with little discernible oak. Great texture -- the epitome of elegance in a wine. The initial attack is a bit flat, but flavors build dramatically throughout the taste and lingers nicely on the finish. Drinking surprisingly well considering its youth.

Quite intense, with strawberry, blackberry, bitter cherry and mint flavours; sweet but with a slightly green acidity; very long. Another treat to taste. Lovely wine that I thought to be more closed than others at the table. Still, this wine is remarkably approachable for its age and it is elegance in a glass. Red fruit with silky texture and laser-focused fruit and detail. Not a hint of funk or wood. Absolute stunner.

A fairly deep colour, mature, garnet; full and concentrated on the nose and palate, with an array of flavours (dried fruit, orange peel, cinnamon), intense and very long. It may be showing its age now, but it just kept growing in the glass, becoming livelier with time. A great wine.

Decanted briefly around 5pm, then enjoyed over a three hour dinner.

Light-med wt, some hint of age.
Bright dark fruits, earthy, some fragrant spice, some cherry pip zest.
Good depth and excellent crisp long finish. Perhaps just a little tart. Dark cherry and plum fruits, some earthy forest floor characters. In a lovely place now, drinking beautifully. Fruit, spice and zing.

Certainly a step up from the CDLR! Big spice and red fruited aromas. Big structured wine with gobs of fruit coating moderate tannins…a 'wow' wine to me, but yes…a baby killer. 96 pts.

Wow! I can't get enough of this. Simply spellbinding, multi layered with so many facets to it's make up and it just kept getting better with every sip. Shared amongst a few people so only a glass had but that was enough to see the full power of this incredible climat from arguably the best producer of it. Trademark kaleidoscopic aroma and waves of detail on the palate, ever changing. Awesome.

Best bottle yet of this wine. The definition of perfect intensity of fruit brought out the the great acidity. We both love this wine and it is a meal on its own.

Explosive off the nose, and in a great drinking window. Drunk with the 01 Beze, which may be longer lived, but for today I preferred the Chambertin.

Barnyard, spice, black raspberry, earth and ripe black cherry aromas open to a supple, round, plush, wine that is starting to open and offer its charms. The long, fresh, clean, finish is filled with a melange of ripe, swseet, juicy, red berries and spice. Elegant, refined and delicious, this is drinking great today.

Beautiful wine. 18

Wildman Tasting and Dinner (Knightsbridge - Northbrook IL): Red cherry and cherry liqueur on nose with great spice and floral elements. Black and red cherry on palate along with roasted meat flavors and great spice, then lots of oak. Lots of structure provide power and energy on a very long finish, which emphasizes the concentrated fruits today.

Quite intense, with strawberry, blackberry, bitter cherry and mint flavours; sweet but with a slightly green acidity; very long. This is still very youthful and probably needs another 3 to 5 years to be at its best. Rupert, I expect that you would like this as it is, but I will keep my other bottles for a while yet!
