The WON among other 16 wines we served in M's BD party. Blossom aroma, silky palate, elegant, long after taste. L and I love 1996 Ch. Margaux, event its second wine, Bravo!

This wine opens up after aerating in bottle for 5 hours. Medium garnet. Even the color suggests its age, the wine is still dominant by fruit. Nose shows berries, plum, flowers, and some cigarette. Full-bodied with velvet tannin, rich, and concentrated. The finish is long and complex, showing lots of sweet fruit, with some cocoa, coffee, and a hint of green pepper. The wine is very well-made and balanced, but lack something exciting.

Decanted ca. 1hr before consumption. Wonderful notes of mint menthol, and earthy tones. Tobacco, smoke and truffle also came through. Beautiful well integrated tannins. Relatively secondary and tertiary, with relatively limited showing of fruit, but very sophisticated, and very enjoyable. Clearly outshone the ‘89 Montrose consumed side by side. May have opened up with more time. Will be interested to follow my other bottle of this over an evening and not in a dinner setting.

Double decanted two hours before dinner, and served alongside the ‘82 Margaux. Still a dark purple core, turning to deep garnet at the rim. Notes of cassis, plum, lily, scorched earth, aged cigar, and hints of graphite and truffle. Medium to full bodied, velvety texture, great sense of depth and expansiveness, with a long and savory finish. A magnificent wine, but I have had better bottles.
