  • In the hushed candlelit halls of sophistication and splendor, where the echoes of aristocracy intertwine with the musings of adventurers and lovers of life's rarest indulgences, I recently embarked upon a captivating odyssey through time and taste.

    My vessel?

None other than the dusty revered 1970 Château Giscours Margaux I nailed on auction at ackers, a wine whose legacy dances through the very vines of Bordeaux, and whose essence whispered tales of a bygone era, a time when my grandfather, a young wine boy amidst the sun-drenched summer of 1970, wove a tale of love to me on a past xmas even of Love and loss beneath the vast, azure French sky.

In the amber depths of this noble elixir, I discovered more than a wine; I unearthed a chronicle, an epic narrative that unfolded with every swirl and sip, transporting me to the vineyard-kissed landscapes of Margaux. As the first velvety notes graced my palate, it was as though I was reliving my grandfather's tale, a story imbued with the heady aroma of sun-soaked grapes and the subtle whisper of oak barrels.

Apollo 13, the earthquake in Tonhai taking 10K, not to mention Apollo 13 and the Peru avalanche. Let’s pay homage.

The 1970 Château Giscours Margaux, despite its years gracefully etched upon its noble countenance, remains an embodiment of opulence and finesse. Its deep, garnet hue spoke of ancient wisdom, while the bouquet, a symphony of blackcurrants, cedarwood, and a hint of truffle, evoked memories of clandestine rendezvous and stolen glances. With each sip, the wine revealed layers of complexity, a tapestry woven with threads of ripe cherries, leather, and the subtlest touch of tobacco. The tannins, now softened with time, caressed my senses, leaving a lingering, velvety trail of elegance and grace.

In the midst of this vinous reverie, I found myself recalling my grandfather's tale, a story woven with the threads of young love amidst the vineyards. He spoke of a radiant French housemaid, her spirit as free as the wind, and her heart as boundless as the endless vineyards that stretched before her. Despite the simplicity of their connection, a love blossomed that summer, one that defied the constraints of societal norms and expectations. And yet, fate, like the capricious winds of Margaux, had other plans. In a twist of destiny, she vanished from his life, leaving behind a bittersweet memory, much like the lingering finish of this 1970 vintage.

I once saw a picture of her, reminding me of Danielle at Ackers and this is who I thought of as I savored the last drops of this exquisite elixir, I couldn't help but feel a profound sense of gratitude for the moments that had passed, both in the glass and in the echoing chambers of my grandfather's memory. The 1970 Château Giscours Margaux had not merely offered a taste of history; it had encapsulated an entire era, a love story, and the spirit of adventure. It was a testament to the enduring allure of the finest things in life, reminding me that even as the years advance, there are wines that, much like treasured tales, continue to deliver a punch that resonates across generations.

In the twilight of this vinous journey, Let’s raise a glass in homage to the 1970 Château Giscours Margaux, a wine that transcends time, leaving an indelible mark on the soul of those who dare to embark upon its epic narrative.

NOTE TO SELF: POP AND POUR, ALMOST READY FINESSE GLASS BY GLASS. IF YOU GOT A BOTTLE, DRINK UP ITS READY.

UPDATE: so I killed half of it in the decanter and it was epic....but began to smell of camp crack, so I had to leave it. Went to Safeway for 35 mins to get some hot tub crap, came back and WHOA! Re opened like my Indian on route 66 during a sundown.

  • Fun experience, although the wine is definitely on the back side of the hill. Almost all of the primary was gone and had given way to the secondary and tertiary savory notes. Lovely nose if you enjoy classic Bordeaux, plenty of barnyard, cedar, leather, cigar wrapper. If you have any left it's time to drink up!

  • A private lunch with friends (Restaurant De Lage Vuursche, Lage Vuursche, NL): Top shoulder bottle. Lovely fruit and spicy depth, gentle sweetness, silky texture but retains some tannic grip, rich and rounded, harmonious, very good length. On fine form.

  • Very fortunate to have enjoyed this- my friend had located this bottle through a London merchant and hand carried it back to Asia. PnP after careful extraction of the cork - sang from the glass just like that, with a captivating nose that only 50 years of patience can unveil. On the palate, this bottle was lively, not at all tired- opulent, with the fruit still evident and imparting sweetness, creating one of those rare experiences which can only be summed up as luxurious. Drinking at peak.
