Drank last nite w/Blancos & Waldmans. Nose of black cherries, leather & tobacco. Medium body is somewhat round, and still demonstrates good level of black cherry fruit. Tannins are resolved, notes of leather, dried fruit, leather, earth/garigue and meat. Pleasing long finish highlights the tertiary elements of this wine. All in all, a CdP that is fully mature, and drinking quite well. No reason to hang on any futher however.

Ripe and hot cherry fruit, plums, a touch jammy. Big rustic tannins too. Thought this Italian and maybe super Tuscan with Merlot of sorts. On hindsight this is rather classic of CDP, I just wish the heat is less overt here. Feels like it’s gonna need quite a bit more time lying down.

At first a bit funky and even suspected a hint of TCA but thankfully this was not the case as it started to clear up nicely and tasted solid. It followed into a small surface decanter for 2 hrs and at that point it started to show beautiful balance between red and dark fruit, spice and Garigue. It ended up being a very clean bottle with elegance and nice mix of subtle flavors with some nice notes of leather and herbs on an old style (but not funky CNDP) which was very enjoyable. Side note Susan who is not a massive CNDP really enjoyed it .

Surprisingly vibrant for the age. Some light bricking color. Mature tertiary notes on the nose, but not just port. Fruit almost fully faded. Enjoyed alongside a bottle of the 2019 which was overpowering. Nonetheless, this was lovely

Light to medium red color with light brownish halo. Peppery, soft forward style. Mid-weight Chateauneuf, soft light finish. Enjoyable now, but drink quickly.

Ski trip - Four wino familes; 2/17/2023-2/20/2023 (WISP Resort): Fully mature nose displaying ripe dark red fruit, strawberry jam, cherry pie, leather, strong tobacco, garrigue, roasted meat and earth. Fully integrated palate, slightly dry red fruit, nicely layered dry red fruit, silky and round, medium acidity, earthy mineral, and a medium to long dry red fruit driven finish with tobacco and leather at the end. This was served outside with bonfire which was perfect. It is drinking nicely.

Monthly Tasting Group HWS: Clos des Papes (By AH): The bouquet is at first slightly locked, but shows quickly what it has in store; garrigue, intense berries and cherries. On the palate a juicy start with a lot of garrigue, beautiful fruits like e.g. blueberries, good acidity and tannin and a good length. Beautifully fresh wine at its peak now.

This is definitely fully mature and doesn’t seem suited for longer aging. Need to try a magnum and see if it’s a bit fresher Still very enjoyable with classic CdP mature flavor profile A bit musty on the nose, very transparent light brick red with a touch of haze. This did open up over 3 hours in open bottle then glass and is a pleasure to drink.

A promising but ultimately disappointing bottle. White pepper and faint garrigue move to a plummy and ultimately figgy palate. Lots of dried fruit notes on top of juicy Grenache. This is not over the hill but clearly very mature and declining.

Thanksgiving in New Hope with the family: Last bottle from this vintage. Decanted for 90 minutes prior to drinking. This bottle had a bit of funk when first opened. Had this with the turkey and sides...
Last bottle 5 years ago - notes from that tasting;"Bright ruby color, no browning. Nose of dried red fruits, baking spice, cedar, some smokiness. Palate of dark cherry, plums, herbs, spice/cinnamon. Mid palate showed savory notes to complement the fruit. Long and layered finish."
Mostly consistent, this bottle seemed to lack depth and slightly off on the mid palate. The culprit most likely CdP bottle variance, not age. This one was good not great on this showing. Good thing the turkey was a hit...:)

Such a pleasure to catch a wine at what seems like it’s optimal state. This “old school” Clos des Papes was impeccably balanced and subtly nuanced. The red fruit flavors were bright and fresh, yet evolved and so delicious. Hard to imagine this could offer anything more.

Drank together with the 1993. Bright dark red colour; bright. The nose is forward with dark red and black fruit, mineral notes and earthy complexity. The palate is bright, with great balance and ripe fine tannins in the finish. Perfect accompaniment to a grilled steak at Mayrik. Drinking well now yet still quite primary. Will keep for another decade and likely more. Showed a hair better than my previous bottle in January.

Lots of age in the appearance, tremendous clarity, you can see straight through it. Dried herbs, balsamic, iron, dry undergrowth and barbecued meat. Sweet cured meat, Parma ham or something on the attack, giving way to kirsch and over ripe or baked red berries on the mid palette, and more barbecue on the finish. More typical of the appellation than the 2003 that we had a few weeks ago. Also wonderful.
Stood up for two weeks. Three hour slow oxidation. Showing far more age than you’d expect for a wine of this age with a deep garnet core fading to a pale garnet outer edge. Bears a passing resemblance aromatically to the 2003 where cherry is once again centre stage only with a little less purity and intensity. However, it needs to be stated that the nose of the 2003 was truly exceptional so we’re taking a very high bar here. Rusty nails, balsamic, red liquorice, lavender, a touch of ground green peppercorns, and lightly grilled red meat join the party. A highly concentrated palate impresses greatly with ultra-ripe red berries, cherry kirsch liqueur, Prosciutto di Parma, and the aforementioned grilled red meats. At a beautiful point in its evolution. Outstanding.

Decanted 1 hour. Clear garnet-blood red color with bricking at the rim. Beguiling notes of juicy red cherries, raspberries, pomegranates, roses, lavender, garrigue, herbs de Provence, beef jus, hint of mincemeat. Medium-full body, seamless, balanced, aging gracefully.

Decanted 1 hour. Light body, tannins fully resolved. Musty note on the palate. Fruit seems to be fading. Seems to be past it’s prime on a gentle decline. Quite average and forgettable. 14% abv.

Colour indicates maturity; the nose is forward red fruit, lots of complexity, palate silky and reasonably well balanced but the alcohol does show little high; enjoyable now and not likely getting any better.

Refined, elegant, soft and silky, the sweet red fruits are spicy, vibrant, clean and pure. Fully mature, medium-bodied, charming and fresh, the peppery, earthy, herbal strawberry cherry and raspberry finish hit the spot. There is no reason to hold this any longer.
Elected to not decant, left open for 3 hours prior to serving. Lighter in color than 6 years ago. Complexity and expressiveness have were both in play. Layers of fresh and mature aromas and flavors. Very balanced with light, silky tannins and a good dose of acidity. Long finish.

APPEARANCE: Medium garnet. A lot of sediment. 14.0% ABV. NOSE: Plum marmalade, old leather, farmyard, well hung meat, camphor, sage, estragon, dates, honey, black currant juice. (90p) TASTE: Mature, lovely sweet fruit, medium rich body, plums, dates, figs. Slightly drying finish. (89-90p) OVERALL: Definitely mature but still drinking very nicely. TOTAL SCORE 90 points.

Translucent garnet. Nose of garrigue, pepper, plum pits, tarragon, lavender. Layers of ripe plum, char, black pepper, and sweet garrigue on the palate. Fresh acidity and rounded tannin. Longer finish of sweet blue fruit, pepper, and earthy grip. Excellent with General Grant burgers on my wife’s birthday after hiking amidst the snow-covered sequoias in the National Park. From a 375.

Bottle some Brett, sweet and some warm mind numbing alcohol. Good it’s Winter right now in my hemisphere. Fruit still there. I would drink soon. Different from other CDP’s I’ve drunk.
2nd night caramel note and herbal notes on the palette. Thinking perfect Winter wine again for how warm and alcoholic this wine is.

Youthful, vibrant, dense. From my cold cellar, where it has been stored since release, this bottle is in perfect condition. Fine tannins make for a solid structure, backed up by cranberry acidity. Bright red fruits, crunchy raspberry, tart cherry. This could easily pass for a wine ten years younger. Quite a bit of alcohol shows through as it warms up, so I'd advise keeping it on the cool side. Lovely, classic wine.

Lovely mature CdP. Delicate flavors of cherries and raspberries, garrigue, warm spices (like clove), with a slightly sweet finish. Round, soft mouthfeel, yet still lively with some spine to keep it shapely and not flacid. Not quite the depth of the 1990 I had a few years ago and certainly not the power this wine had 10 years ago. Just on the cusp of a fully mature CdP.

Since last consumed in 2017 this seems to have lost most of the remaining structure without gaining any additional interest. This will divide opinion. For me I enjoyed this wine more in the first 15 years of its life.

OK. I feel my best observation is you need to drink this wine now or wait 3-5 years to allow it to progress to the next flavor profile. Past the full fruit, somewhat spicy and delicious profile of a young CDP and now in a really good integrated place with the blackberry, spice and cigar box all working together in a subtle, more complex way. Shows what a great Rhone can be, drink young, wait a little, or wait longer. All making a different wine experience. Solid structure that will allow future development if you wait but don't get caught in between.

My last bottle of this delightful CdP drank with braised pork shoulder. Wow. This 20 year old CdP was truly outstanding. Very concentrated with herbs and spices, muted fruit and earth notes. Quite different from earlier bottles (drank 8+ years ago) with much of the fruitiness replaced by nuanced secondary flavors. Still plenty of backbone. Amazing wine. Drink or hold.

Bring a Good Bottle at The Kenwood (The Kenwood, Mpls, MN): Dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour plus. Certainly the best bottle to date of what has been a surprisingly under performing vintage of Clos des Papes. This bottles was pretty, understated, but in a good way. I like the style, medium bodied, with a nose of lovely red cherries, earth, raspberry, subtle garrigue and spice. The palate is soft, raspberry juice, garrigue, dried spices, cherry, white pepper. Nice.

Opened by Mark about 3 hours before drinking but not decanted. Smoother and more integrated than the 2000 Boisrenard that we drank alongside. Really in a good place now but no rush to drink. Ruby color. Notes of red currant, forest floor and charcoal. 5th time I have had this wine going back to 2007 and it seems to get better every time. 94 points.

A lovely CndP, even better than the bottle three years ago. This is not in a blockbusting vein or over opulent like many 2000s. Colour has become paler, the nose has opened up and the palate is harmoniously medium+ bodied with quasi-Burgundian fruit in a rather sweeter vein, balsamic hints, a touch of game, fresh acidity and some kirsch in the adequately firm and long finish. Excellent.

Coravin tasting. Faint nose. On the palate, quite complex. No tannins left. This is soft and easy drinking. Might need a little decant. Seems a tiny bit dumb. Some nice floral and herby notes coming through. Garrigue. Plenty of fruit still left. Some violet on the finish. Nice.

French WTDS at Bellecour (Bellecour, Mpls, MN): PNP, drank 1 glass over an hour. Started out pretty harsh, angular and showing heat. Settled down after 20 minutes in glass. This really needs some air to bring it around. Personally, I'd still decant this. This is good ultimately, but it doesn't rise to the level of what I expect from Clos des Papes. I still have some hope that this needs more time and in another 3-5 years this could have more nuance. See previous notes for specifics.

Popped, poured, and no regrets. This is a jam monster through and through. Thick aromatics of candied cherries and dried herbs. Flavors of preserved red/black fruits, smoked beef jerky, Worcestershire sauce, and nuts. Elegant acid and almost nonexistent tannins. Drink up!

This still had a lot of flavor to it - fair amount of berry fruits on the front. The tannins were long gone and this was incredibly smooth of the back. Very good wine, also had the 2008 later that night and it was a much more powerful wine as expected.

With Toutou, PJ and Leila, From PJK's cellar at the house, bbq lamb and sausages. This was really, really good. Beautiful fresh red fruit colors, no sign of aging. WTDS at Tilia: Rhones Among Others (3/2/17): Very dark red/purple color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. This was pretty typical of what I've seen from this bottle numerous times. It just seems to under perform given the pedigree. This seemed over the top in comparison to the '00 Donjon, huge, very dark fruits, quite peppery, some citrus zest too, a bit vegetal as well. It did improve somewhat near the end. Still doesn't resonate like Clos des Pape usually does. 89 to 90pts.

Lovely fading colour; pristine nose, graceful, (I understand reference to Burgundy by others), a hint of garrigue & tar, plush, latent power; initially gives a sense of filigree, this blossoms into an authentic CdP, plenty of grunt, yet well mannered, effortless fruit which carries the hefty alcohol splendidly. Drinking well now, this will endure.

Really a great bottle of CdP and classic old school Clos des Papes. Ready for prime drinking. It remind of why I used to buy CdP but have pretty much stopped now. Lovely red fruit, some dark, and herb and garrigue. Very round and smooth finish which is persistent. A ripe vintage along the lines of 1990 so not like 2007 etc. At prime, drink 'em and enjoy. Old world styled.

I drank this same wine from a 375ml bottle a few months ago and thought it was much better. Perhaps the aging has gone faster in the smaller bottle. Still very nice but it amazes me sometimes how much variation there can be between two bottles of the same wine/vintage.

A lovely reminder of what the (pre-Cambie) winemaking at this estate used to be like. Fresh, plummy, medium-bodied, with a late licorice note. Still rather young, but probably not going to get any better than where it is right now.

Poured from a 375ml bottle. I'm really enjoying this -- it's in a great spot right now. Very fruit forward, I can see why some people who prefer a classic style CpD, but I find this to be very elegant and light on it's feet, while still having plenty of fruit and complexities from it's age. Buying more now... at $75/bottle this is a steal in my opinion.

Occasional dinner group; A vertical of 15 vintages Clos des Papes and some great extra's. (@ B in SvG): This 2000 is a beautiful and mature wine which still has red and dark berry fruits in the bouquet. Of course beautiful garrigue as well. On the palate ripe dark berries, a lot of good garrigue, beautiful acidity and also beautiful and mild tannin. This is a lovely wine right now and even though the alcohol shows a little bit in the finish this wine definitely deserves a score of 93 at least.

decanted one hour prior to tasting/drinking over 2 hours, this does need time to open as at first seemed too thin/sharp, but later this evolved into a decently bodied yet burgundian style of wine. Not overly complex but glad to have more.

A few years I attended two or three horizontals of CndP '00 and at least once there were deviant flavours on Clos des Papes, so I opened this bottle with some misgivings. I need not have worried. Fine pristine colour and nose complex but subdued at first. The palate was quite full bodied and up-front in shape showing opulent red and dark fruit with a sweet tinge but enlivened by more acidity than I expected after a recent Beaucastel '00 and complemented by savoury secondary notes and hints of spice, liquorice and game. This last came out on the lingering finish and led to excellent pairing with venison. Very good.

Dinner with Neeta and Manoj at our house. Decanted for 2.5 hours before drinking, really allowed the wine to show from when first opened. Drank next to an 03 Secret de Sabon, paired with my brick Chicken Toscana and Lemon/Dill potatoes. Well stored bottle from my cellar...had to blow the dust off this one...
Bright ruby color, no browning. Nose of dried red fruits, baking spice, cedar, some smokiness. Palate of dark cherry, plums, herbs, spice/cinnamon. Mid palate showed savory notes to complement the fruit. Long and layered finish.
Great example of well aged CdP, this bottle was in a perfect spot. Should hold at this level for another 3-5 years (IMO). Drink now.

Junguenet bottling. Healthy ruby without any browning. Superb nose of red cherry, spice, menthol, and bark. Poised, lush, full feel stopping short of surmaturité. Pretty much perfect interplay of ripe fruit and the more savory elements with enough acidity to knit it together. Long, long finish. This was my last bottle of this, and it went out in a blaze of glory, outshining the other bottles I've drunk over the past few years.

Interesting comparison to recent '01 Vieux Donjon. This was less structured, less fruited but more finessed. Didn't really budge over a couple of hours but no complaints about where it is. A touch of smoke frames a deep, mature but by no means demure wine.

Popped and let sit in bottle re-corked for 45 mins before decanting. Light reddish purple in glass with clear meniscus of alcohol. Nose was alive with candied raisins, toast, jam, leather and a hint of smoke. Over 30-40 mins this opened up nicely in Zalto burgundy glasses: gorgeously balanced structure with intense yet alluring fruit cherry honey toffee. Subtle but long and satisfying finish. Can keep for another 4-7 years.

Tasted alongside the 2001. Just a shade lighter in color than that wine. No brett, nose more characterized by menthol. Slightly lighter weight (that is, medium bodied), mix of tobacco, garrigue, and redder fruit than the 2001. Still full of life, no signs of overripeness from this ripe vintage. Less concentrated than its younger sibling.

Decanted 30 minutes (helped 'unmet' nose, separate sediment). Dark ruby, some orange on rim. Seemed less wide-open and complex than 4 years ago, dark and red fruits with spice, animals and herbs still discernible on nose. Fruit is medium and structure is integrated and velvety. Tannins are soft, but present, and acidity is medium-low. In balance and quite enjoyable

Junguenet bottling. Garnet color with faded edge. After a blast of funk, some red fruit. Medium weight with some glycerine. Toned down plummy fruit and herbs. Light ruby, not complete clarity. Muddled red fruit, bark, and a touch of herbs. Medium weight, some alcohol showing. Savory, dry, fruit and brown spices. Very enjoyable. Fully mature and has really developed in the bottle over the last couple of years. Lighter in colour than most CdPs and more burgundian in style. Never could stand that fork ... (Mikhailgrad (Rego Park, Queens)): Nose is spicy with herbs, meat, garrigue. Enters on the palate quite nise: spicy, blackberry, herbs. But the finish is heavy and blurry with some heat. Nose - 4.5/6, Palate - 4.5/6, Finish - 3.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 0.5-1/2 = 13-13.5/20.

In the House of MLERMONTOV (New York, Rego Park): The nose was forward and ripe with intense blackberry, minty herbs, pastry shell, and dark soil tones. On the palate, it was silky-smooth and dark, yet juicy and fun, showing minerals, and spiced, ripe blackberry. Long dark fruits and spice lingered on the finish with a hint of heat. This was good, but far from worthy of this producer.

In which Seth lost his fork. (Count's place, NY): Lots of bright red and dark fruit here tinged with herbs and a faint savoury earthy element. CDP Tasting (Minneapolis, MN): Certainly not a great vintage of Clos des Papes and pale in comparison to the amazing 01. Earth, underbrush, roasted meats, spice and floral notes. Medium finish but not as balanced as I would expect from a 2000. Too many others that are better from the vintage.

Big Name CDP's (Tracy's, Mpls): Very dark red, decanted 1 hour, 2oz pour. Dry earth, restrained nose, subtle anise, cedar, spices, pepper, subtle garrigue. This a very good wine but it still underwhelms for the vintage and the producer 90+pts to 91pts.

Had this at a blind tasting of five chateauneufs. Came in first with good reason. Years have integrated the flavors beautifully. Black fruit with an herbal almost minty undertone, just enough earthiness to make it sturdy. Very elegant for a chateauneuf.

Heresy-Paella Night with French Wines (Contigo, San Francisco): From the American importer. Medium ruby (slightly deeper than the 2001). Very different nose than that wine-more black fruited and tobacco. Medium weight but not as textural as the younger wine. More grip and tannin, shorter finish. This is clearly not yet at its peak, but it is difficult to see it eclipsing its younger stablemate based upon tonight's showing. It is just more rugged and less harmonious.

2000 Grenache and Rhone Blends (Rich & Peggy's House, Los Altos, CA): Refreshing, soft, modest nose (B+). Smooth, tasty palate (B++/A-). My #5, Group's #6 (54 pts). Tasted blind and surprised to discover that this was the Clos des Papes in the line-up as I was expecting more depth...

Gentle, soft raspberry-ish nose. Some developed aromas but nothing especially distinct to me. Appropriate pale hue and little browning. Impression of gentle softness, almost sweetness on the palate. Very easy to drink.

This Clos des Papes is a bit over the hill but it still has interesting sweet spicy fruit with cedar wood and licorice. Finish is medium which indicates that in a prior life, this wine had some structure. I'm starting to question the proclaimed longevity of CDPs, especially in lighter vintages.

A lovely distinctively Clos Des Papes nose and palette. We let it breath for three hours and it needed it (one hour in it was not looking good) and then held its own against other vintages, al-be-it not as good as the 2006 I had last year. Lovely earthy and stone nose, and great long mouth feel with a range of great flavors that reveal themselves steadily. I agree with others that it may not have that much longer to go, but I didn't feel it was over the hill yet.

Decanted 2+ hours. Garrigue surprisingly faint on the nose, lurking somewhere in the background under dark chocolate and dusty dried flower notes. Palate is a bit clumsy. Quite light initially with acidity that seems to spread unevenly. Garrigue more evident on the palate, yet this is still not as prominent as other CdP's from the same vintage (I'm thinking Beaucastel here). Some raspberry notes provide a bit of freshness however this is lacking in mid palate density while the tannins culminate on the finish which seems to possess some heat from alcohol.
An acceptable Clos Des Papes. Wish I could say more.

dinner with friends and this bottle was terrific..unfortunately did not give it a long slow ox and so it really was just drunk from decanter at table....good mature red fruits...plenty of garrigue but plenty clean and limited horsepoop or the other attributes my wife dislikes...our friends are more the Woodbridge drinkers...they were pleased (as was I) that it was obvious to them that this was good wine as opposed to the usual stuff..a bit like saying goodbye to old friend to finish my last of these mags

I disagree that this wine is dead or fading. If you like young and boisterous CdP, or "tour de force" CdP with "gobs", then perhaps this is not a wine for you, but if you prefer elegance and balance, then this wine should be ideal. Especially after a couple of hours of air, this is showing plenty of red fruit and some spice, graceful and balanced, with a rather long finish. I wouldn't pay the current retail price of Clos des Papes, but I still have many bottles of the 2000 since release, and I am glad to be enjoying them over the next few years.

All good things must eventually come to an end, which is this wine is going. At weeks before its 14th birthday, the wine does not have the same freshness, level of fruit or vivacity it displayed in its youth. It was easy to find the kirsch, licorice and garrigue character, along with its trademark supple textures, but the wine is clearly fading. I'm going to finish my few remaining bottles over the next year or two.

This was an unusual bottle of ChdP, especially for the 2000 and 2001 vintages. Our last three bottles have been particularly "funky", almost unpleasant. The nose of this bottle was very fruity, sweet and no hint of barnyard, etc.--the usual ChdP. Color was still quite dark, no real evidence of brick. In the mouth, those who were blind to the bottle did not remotely guess ChdP, even though they knew there were a couple out for the evening (we bag everything). The wine was very smooth, not a harsh element to be found, and lacked any of the gaminess of moderately older ChdP. Further, little of the garrigue, and yet, we did NOT find it over extracted, i.e. like the 2003, others noted. Rather, was well-balanced, but definitely on the "fruit" side vs. "gaminess/garrigue" side. We got some tobacco, sweet fruit, perhaps mocha--simply not the usual profile.

We're seven getting this one, blind for the six other guys, but they might as well have got it open. Takes a sniff for them to call Chateauneuf-du-Pape, a sip later Clos des Papes is mentioned. And it's not easy saying this is a 2000, since 2000 in the region was one of those warm years that gave rave reviews initially, but cooled off a bit with years. But this one has not cooled off one bit. This is classic with raspberry/strawberry jam, nori, seaweed, garrigue, a touch of exotic spice and sandalwood. Fruit is cool and very much alive, acidity is lovely, the licorice/garrigue is perfect and the minerality makes it very fresh. Elegant, powerful and just smothers your mouth, nose and senses with impressions. Clos des Papes makes one cuvée and year in year out show why that is a good idea. This is a wine with soul, and just like Domaine Pegau, it teleports you straight to southern France. I'm a lot higher than the average 91,5 points on this.

Truffle & Chateauneuf du Pape hunting in Provence; 11/7/2013-11/10/2013 (Crillon Le Brave): Maybe we should have decanted. We found this closer to the 2003 , with a lot of ripe fruit and a sweet core. Was 2000 a very hot year? Definitely this felt like it which was in a way off putting as we were looking for the CdP usual elegance which was in a way missing here. 90

Taste: Medium bodied with medium acidity and silky tannins. The structure is still showing some youth, bit it is far from inaccessible with black cherries, briary tones, violets, garrigue, and a touch of funk.
Overall: This was drinking very well. It still has a ways to go, but is a lot of fun right now. This is a CdP that leans more on finesse than power with a touch of funk as well.

Dinner at Chez Simo (Chez Simo Bistro - Chicago, IL): A lovely nose of berries, some smoke, tilled soil, florals, and spice. Clos des Papes usually is a hit with me and this was no exception. A real burgundy-lovers CdP, this had an airy feel to the palate while retaining grip, complexity and depth. Lots of spicy red fruits, mushroom, and some earth.

Almost identical to an excellent bottle a couple of months ago. Maturing color. Some mild funk. More Mourvedre flavors to begin with, but then succulent red fruit emerged. Ripe but not sweet, not a great deal of garrigue. Generous and giving without being overdone-somewhat of a throwback.

Bottle A (hf/in). Tasted at 16,5-17 C over two days. Initially smooth, albeit rustic, but with air, this changes, showing more fresh fruit, but also the tell tale heat and alcohol. Certainly one of the better 2000’s, but it is not typical, a bit rustic and backwards. This was my last bottle, no harm done, I guess, but no hurry either. Smoother with more harmony on the second day. Had I more, I would opt to keep them maybe 5 years and see, if a beautiful swan comes out of this. For now, I am not sure. Tasted vis-à-vis Charvin 2000, the latter was superior. 91? points.

I liked this slightly better than the 2005 we tasted alongside. It had a darker fruit profile and a silkier palate. Cola and black cherry notes were lovely too. Kevin thought it was a bit raisined but I didn't mind. To me, this is a great ages CdP.

Kelly’s visit, two nights of great wines - Burgundy and Rhone (Marks duckhouse, Falls Church, Va): A hint of raisin, black fruits, tobacco, cola syrup and herb de provence. Round and silky palate, nice sweet fruit attack and a hint of dry tannins that is not bothersome. This seems to reach the full maturity. I am not a big fan of very ripe fruit expression but some may appreciate it a lot more. I would definitely enjoy this more in a cold night with a roasted game.

Not the greatest Chateaneuf but all the characteristics and a fine drink. A little brown round the edges but still plenty of toasty fruit. Decanted at noon, drunk at 1.30 - which seemed about right. Not going to get a lot better but a good drink whilst we wait for the 2001s to be ready

I had two glass out this out of a two different magnums. The first magnum had been double decanted. It was just a decent CDP, delicious and crisp but almost no complexity. It almost seemed like it had been given too much air. This glass I'll rate an 87
The second glass was a pop and pour. Much better glass, much deeper flavors and more complexity. It did, however, start falling apart in the glass but I'll give this a 93
Total score 90
My guess, based on my experience is that this should be consumed sooner rather than later and don't let it breathe too much. It's ready to go.

Junguenet bottling. Medium center with signs of maturity at edge. Classic aromatics of tobacco, faded red fruit and a little bit of herb. Medium to full bodied, generous without being overripe. Flavors of Mourvedre and mulled red fruit, excellent acidity. Probably just reaching full maturity. Very expressive and evocative of older school Chateauneuf. The best bottle I've had of this since 2010 with several disappointments in between.

Popped and poured, and then drank over two days. This comes in an old-style bottle with the Federation crest, rather than the unique Clos des Papes emblem. This color is a nice, rich red that shows no signs of aging. There is some minimal sediment at the end of the bottle. The nose carries red fruit, herbs, soil, and just a bit of raisin—it’s a really nice nose. The wine is smooth and sweet in the mouth, with just a touch of acid. The finish reminds one of the ripe and wonderful wine just consumed. Overall, this is in a very nice place and is an enjoyable bottle of CdP. 93 points.

This was very disappointing, and now for the last three bottles. Nose was funky, like old ChdPapes with some Brett. In the mouth, very raisin-like, as for the over extracted vintages (e.g. 2003). We have enjoyed all other 2000s (Beaucastel, Janasse, Pegau, etc) but are thinking this wasn't a great effort by Clos des Papes. We basically poured it out, and again, this is the third bottle.

Magnifique. 95 pts

Very nice mature expressive CdP, if missing the explosiveness of some bottles of '01. Spice, garrigue, and sandalwood on the nose along with a floral expression of a red fruit liquor. Palate of cherry pit, licorice, along with a wonderful line of spice and herbs. Has chalky slightly bitter tannins on the transition to the finish. Red fruit really comes to the forefront on the finish. A wonderful, complete expression of classic Cdp. Balanced, drinking perfectly now, with nice spice and energy and showing no signs of fading soon.

An opaque wine with a dark red core and an aged border showing a red orange tinge, initially tight but opens up with two hours in decanter. Enticing aromas of plums, raspberries, blackberries, dark cherries, licorice, black truffles, lavender, rosemary, tobacco, old leather, smoked meats, and crushed black peppers. Dense and silky textured with sweet raspberries, blackberries, and plums on the attack that follow on to the mid-palate where it mingles with refreshing acidity. The finish is long with dark cherries, blackberries, roasted meats, crushed stones, black pepper, and polished well integrated tannins. A wine filled with amazing hedonistic aromas, great fruit that is balanced by a generous dose of acidity, well integrated silky tannins, however the small amount of alcoholic heat on the end sticks out a bit.

Everything I wanted from this wine. Stood for 2 days before opening, decanted off significant sediment and consumed over 2 hours. Delightful depth of fruit and complexity with refreshing acidity - no baked or 'overdone' tones for me. Quite light on it's feet and whilst not delicate certainly no blockbuster. Long finish and very enjoyable.

From magnum, a beautiful bottle of CdPape at perhaps the early side of maturity. From memory nice weight and richness bordering on over the top but not at all syrupy, nice garrigue, still has dark berry fruit at its core. Medium finish. This tastes like it has 5 to maybe 10 years ahead but so good now, worth going to at regular interval.

Wow, what a beautiful bottle of CdP. This bottle was drank without a decant. The color indicated a mature wine with a little brownish tint. Also a slight cloudiness. The nose is big with cherry, smoke, graphite and earth. the palate is of a wine in wonderful balance with all of the tannin integrated and flavors cherry, dark fruits, smoke, and saddle leather. Although they are drinking well, I would say that there is no rush to drink these.

Quick TN: Popped and poured. Lots of cherry on the nose, with some garrigue. Drinking well right out of the gate - the cherry was predominant with some leather and savory herbs. Good acidity. No sense of any impending decline so no hurry to drink these, but I don't know if my sole remaining bottle will last too long. Much more enjoyable than the 2000 Alban Reva.

Monthly Tasting Group: Loads of CDP's and more (Meritage, St. Paul): I really liked the nose on this with some classic funk, herb de provence, spice and floral notes. But I was disappointed in the palate tonight. It was disjointed, alcohol showing, burnt rubber, spicy, firmly tannic, cherry liqueur, medium full. Clos des Papes is normally one of my favorite producers, but for whatever reason, this bottle didn't show as well as expected.

Slow-O this for 90 minutes, brought to a dinner tasting where it sat opened for another 90 minutes before we got around to it. At first this was a high octane alcoholic beast. After 30 more minutes it came around with garrigue, floral, dark fruits pretty much in line with other 00's on the table though I preferred the Donjon the most from this vintage.

Color-wise this wine is beginning to show some signs of maturity. Some hints of brown are sneaking in. This is a very good wine. Love the grenache fruit flavors, garrigue, lavender and some brown sugar, creme brulee flavors. This is my type of CdP. Rich, complex and long. Enjoyed over 3 hours.

Was pretty nondescript when opened. Decanted and hardly any nose. Gave it 1 hr, opened up slightly. It was light with red fruits, very unlike other vintages of Clos Des Papes. When I had the 1995 and 2001, they were big and heavy. This was so light, almost Burgandian.

2000 High-end Chateauneuf du Pape Horizontal (Bin 75): Certainly tasted like a blend of grapes. Prior ones had mainly grenache. Dark with red cherry and leather. Good acid, with slightly alcoholic finish. Lighest of all of the wines today. Warm, figgy style similar to the Marcoux VV, but nowhere near the stuffing.

Nice acidity and still-present but soft tannins make this enjoyable to drink. The flavors are trending slightly towards "brown" notes and having more experience with bramble-berry young CdPs this takes some getting used to. The long finish is impressive.

A little oaky and funky on the nose at first, which blew off after a few minutes to give way to a sweet, but reserved bouquet of dark fruits, violets, cola, and a hint of chocolate. In the mouth, it is full-bodied and features a beautifully sweet, smooth texture that reveals earthy flavors of plums, blackberries, and herbs that cling to the mouth. The finish, while a bit brutish, is long and leaves a hint of lavender. After an hour or so the alcohol seemed to dominate everything else. A bit larger-scale and darker than the 2000 Pegau I recently opened, but not quite as magestic or complex. While it certainly has some time left, I'm not sure how much better it will get.

A phenomenal bottle and perhaps the best of the lot -- and my last. Very clean and pure. Earthy and semi-mature aromas. Very classy and persistent on the finish. I hate to use the word "Burgundian" but it fits in that there's an energy and lightness here that isn't expected and the wine is that much better for it. But at the same time, clearly and effusively pure CdP Grenache all the way -- in the best possible way. Stunning bottle. I've had some variability with this vintage -- some show too ripe and flabby, but this bottle had a lot of gas left in the tank. Stunning.

What started out with an abrupt metallic palate and very little nose evolved over the next hours to a nice mature fruit wine. Notes of cherry cola and roasted herbs. Mineral undertones were evident, but not overpowering. Overall a nice wine that seems to be peaking.

At celler temp it seemed a bit oxidized or overly acidic, but as it warmed to room temp it showed more density, better nose, all of the oxidized/acidic tastes evaporated leaving a nicely balanced wonderfull wine.

Decanted 90 minutes (benefited). Medium garnet. Surprised that it's been 3 years+ since last bottle. Seems similar but perhaps more integrated and silky. Still has meaty, floral notes under red fruit/berries with some darker fruit undertones on nose. Silky textured, penetrating fruit with brightening acidity and soft tannins. Terrific balance. Has finesse and complexity. Sense of tar and mineral. Not a 'shouter'. Just great with food. Approaching a pleasing maturity, but has room to develop.

Clearly from a hot vintage. Nose and taste of stewed, overripe fruit -- prunes, almost an amarone character. Lacks acidity -- a bit flabby. Quite rich and distinctly high in alcohol. Not a style of wine I enjoy.

I still struggle with this wine. I can see the charms of its ripe and sweet fruit and its subtle secondary gamy and guarrigue characters. But I still find it too uni-dimensional. Compared to the 2001 which is a truly great wine, this slightly underwhelming.

Clos des Papes 2000 and 2004-08 Vertical at Henry's Lakehouse (Candlewood Lake, Danbury CT): To put a finale on our Clos des Papes vertical, Adam traded a 2007 Mas de Boislauzon du Quet for this so we all could sample what these are like with a bit of age. Already there was a bit of bricking at the edge compared to the younger vintages. This was full of the funky barnyard nose blended with dried red fruit. Interestingly as the 4 ladies all did not favor this but us geeky wine guys were enjoying the rustic tones of this wine. This wine from a not highly rated vintage did show the incredible potential of the Avril's other Chateaunuef-du-Pape bottlings.

This wine is an example of great balance. Nothing here comes on too strong (unlike more recent Clos des Papes vintages). Lovely palate of red fruit (cherries, raspberry), hints of meat and garrigue. As PBaek wrote in his note below, restrained and contained. There is still structure here and I would keep this wine longer for it to soften and attain that velvety, peachfuzz texture that comes to CdP just as the tannins release their grip. Not there yet, but soon.

Much better than the last bottle (note of 5/1/2011). The nose was sweet fruit--as for prior bottles, this ChdP has not had any of the traditional barnyard or garrigue nose. Just a tinge of brick around the edge, but mostly still good color with little sign of age. In the mouth, sweet fruit, tannins now very smooth, great balanceand a wonderful blend of sweet dark fruit, a hint of garrigue and a bit of that roasted meat so common in these wines. But again, and as for a number of 2000s, basically a sweet smooth wine. At a perfect age.

As anyone who really cellars wine knows, with older wine, the condition of an individual bottle can be as important as the wine itself, the winemaker, and vintage. I say this because of all the bottles of this wine I have had, this was by far the best one. This bottle was hauntingly good CdP. I have had the good fortune of tasting many 100-pointers over the years, and this one was right up there with all the legends I have tasted in the past. As a matter of fact, the wine this most closely reminded me of is the 1990 Pegau. The nose of this wine is perfumed with kirsch and garrigue, and the wine literally roars over the palate with layer upon layer of fruit, earth, and freshness. The fruit is plush and velvety, but at no point was it "too much". Perfect balance from front to finish. The best wine I have had in a long time, and certainly one of the best CdPs I have ever tasted (right up there with 1990 Pegau). I will never forget the taste of this wine.

This was a real surprise. We usually worry--will it be barnyard, typical old-world stye ChdP, or too modern with too much fruit. Instead, this was actually thin. Not a single other bottle from Clos des Papes or other ChdP have we had with this characteristic in vintages such as 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003, etc. Was a real surprise. Had settled down, nicely balanced, no barnyard, but not the wine we remembered.

Clos des Papes Tasting (Great Wine Buys, Portland OR): The nose has a spicy character, with the full cherry scents mixed in with herbal notes of licorice, and cola, and a mineral component as well. The cola flavors deliver on the palate, but only in the sense of the flavors, not with the sweetness and texture associated with the soft drink! Clean and juicy cherries work well with this, and acidity dries nicely and evenly throughout the experience. It sits fully on the mid palate, and some dark stems linger through the finish. Tannins set in to dry things out very late on the finish.

Excellent wine, but not as pleasurable as some other bottles of same vintage that I scored closer to the 93-94 point range. This bottle did not taste over the hill, but the flavors were a bit restrained. Would recommend trying to decant for 1-2 hours, as it seemed to open up with time.

Tasted next to the 2001 Clos des Papes at Veritas. The 2000 Clos des Papes is more contained and restrained than the 2001 with delicate, red cherry fruit and plenty of pepper and garrigue. There is a very good structure and a fine balance here and the wine is delicious. One of the tasters thought that the 2000 will live longer than the 2001 because of the tannic backbone. Great wine.

14% ABV. Opened and left in the cellar for about an hour before consuming. Slightly tawny dark garnet translucent in the glass. Savory nose of dried herb garrigue and a bit of tea. 2010 Simple Dinner Series No.9 – Rhone God’s Birthday (Jade Palce @ The Forum Shopping Mall): Alcohol :: 14% Very different in style with the rest of CDP tonight. Sweet plum and fig, bubble gum, exotic spiciness and herbs with orange peel, very 'New' aromas. Sweet and smooth entry, good richness with some bitterness, grounded coffee bean with bitter tannin and light oak present. Smooth, velvety with long spicy finish and touch of heat present. Junguenet bottle. Red center, tawny edge-looks mature. Very different impression from last bottle. Served close to cellar temperature, this was all tarry licorice right out of the bottle with an unsatisfying bitter edge. Unfortunately, this bitterness on the finish never completely dissipated, although the wine did gain texture, understated red fruit, and some secondary, green perfume. Alas, a late burnt rubber note also crept in, adding to my suspicion that something was not quite right with this bottle although it is hard to pick out any common flaw. At any rate, it harkens back to old style Clos des Papes-elegant, savory, and not dominated by fruit. Just not a good bottle, I'm afraid.

Drank together with the 2003. Medium ruby with slight bricking towards the rim. More youthful and slightly more restrained on the nose than the ’03, but on the palate this was giving up the goods with loads of spice, kirsch and pure red fruit flavours. After the bottle had been opened for an hour the nose started to come alive giving notes of red plums, kirsch and spice with hints of funk. Well balanced at this stage with medium acid and tannin and lots fruit to match it. Great now, but should be even better in 5 years. Excellent. 90+

A beautiful bottle drinking immensely well. Nice complex nose, but the wow factor was the pretty fruit on the palate and the nice clean finish. Garnet red from my passive cellar (wine bought on release) so probably a bit advanced over active cellaring, but at the top of its game.

An evening with Clos des Papes (Againn, Washington DC): A good deal more rustic than the 99. I believe this bottling is eclipsed by the 2000 Pegau which is a fantastic wine. Some austerity and gamey roast on the nose that settles with time through the night (I held onto a glass for several hours). A refined palate emerges. This wine has the animalistic brutishness that is somewhat polar to the 99, with more notes of game and bramble.

Overwhelming port-like nose - became more pronounced with extended decanting. Off-putting actually. Is this typical of Clos des Papes? I've never gotten in Vieux Telegraph, Vieux Donjon, etc.

Muted nose. Seemed a little closed even after a decant. Very nice presence on the palate, full, smooth, and elegant. This was a little hot on the finish. Not as good a previous bottles. Think it might be a little shut down, which is suprising for a 2000.

Opened by Mark. This bottle was not as good as the last one that I had. Decanted for a couple hours. Seemed restrained with low fruit. Dark color. The nose was very nice. On the palate I noted kirsch, raspberries and underbrush character. 89 points.

Really nice wine! A pleasure to drink and wish I had more to come back to! Well worth the effort. Deep perfume of earth and dark berries with smoke underneath. Tannins abound, but soft and balanced. On the palate, dark cherries and forest floor come through on a meaty, chewy character. Just a really nice wine that is drinking very well right now. 90 minute decant.

Imported by the official American importer. Garnet color with even, maturing rim. Complex, intoxicating perfume of caramel, red fruit, licorice, and herbs. Tanzer would probably call this "vinous". Silky feel, balanced in every way-lighter weight against some real sap, acid versus the naturally sweet fruit, freshness of fruit in equipoise with evolving mature notes and perfume. In a word, one of the best Chateauneufs we've had in a while. Probably the best of 5 variable bottles I've had over the past 3+ years from different sources, and unquestionably delightful to drink, which was not the case back in 2007.

Very nice CdP showing some evolution. Spiced cherry and spiced plum and scents of forest floor, strong and alluring and compelling me to put my nose in the glass again and again. The texture is softer than that of a young wine, even though there is still a hit of dry tannin at the end of the palate. I'm sure this has the fortitude to go longer in the cellar, rather than a concern that the tannin will outlast the fruit. The palate is strong enough to suggest many years hence. I opened this at the bbq to celebrate Liz's graduation from grad school.

Soft and warm. Lovely raspberry scents and evolved, v ripe grenache. This immediately put a smile on people's faces when served blind. Perhaps a bit diffuse, but still likely to hold some time yet.

A great btl in perfect shape. Pervassive Rhone nose. Fresh raspberries, garrigue, Kirsch and a mineraliness. Pure, perfectly balanced and long in the mouth. Terrifc CDP! 14% alc. Couldn't keep my hands off of it. Sure it will get more interesting and I have 2 more btls but a pleasure now. Popped and poured into a Burg glass and let set for 30 minutes before sip. Served and drank at cellar temp 55-60.

Based on this tasting and reflecting back on the notes posted here, this has to be in a process of mutation. I had a hard time making my mind up about this wine throughout dinner. As other tasters have reported the sweet-fruit character, raspberry and cherry, of this wine is striking. It's primary, slightly candied and a bit monolithic. The bouquet is rich with, in addition to the fruit character, dried herbs and kirsch. The palate is where the youthfulness of the wine is most obvious: the wine has plenty of stuffing, with a long and consistent rich raspberry fruit, but it has not really evolved into secondary characters except a licorice touch. With food this seems too overtly sweet and fruity. I'm certainly not opening another bottle for a while.

A bit more to this bottle. A sense of unsubstantiated sweetness lets its down though. Cork had been wet to the top. This is threatening to develop into a very nice wine. Its a painful evolution though as it mutates...

Not in the Pegau's class tonight in terms of stuffing and structure, but a fine bottle nonetheless. Loads of dusty garrigue and mid weight fruit. A pretty wine.

Opened at 9 am it was already good to go and suitable for dessert....by dinner time it was just singing and won over all who tried it.....I can only pray that these more modern conconctions loved by the Bob deliver this kind of purity and straight up pleasaure as this wine....Fantastic

2000 Chateauneufs @ Hawksmoor (Hawksmoor, London): Corked. Bother, should have tasted this before leaving the house rather than just sniffing it. Marginal on the nose witi some air but certainly corky on palate.

This was all about framboise. Intense raspberry, roses, with a whiff of cotton candy on a silky frame balanced by licorice and provencal herbs. Tannins are fine, but noticeable heat detracts on the finish. This seems fairly primary at this point.

Before I say anything about this wine, let me confess that this bottle was slightly heat damaged...and it was all my own fault. When I took delivery of this bottle five years ago, I had the wine shipped when it should not have been...And although the wine didn't get cooked, it did get warm enough to slightly impair this bottle. With that said, this was still a very good bottle of wine that showed lots of typicity with kirsch liqueur, garrigue, and a light chocolate ganache. Unfortunately, the fruit was mildly subdued, which emphasized the relative structure of the wine. I have one more bottle left that was purchased at a different time, and stored/shipped perfectly. I am now really looking forward to tasting that one.

MAYBEish. Opened this because I found it lying at the top of a box of CNF magnums. But, this was a waste, plate was numb after dessert from eating-out dinner. So, I could not really taste it. What was clear, was that it was fairly mute on the nose and did not seem to have much age on it. I think I have one left, but will not try it for another few years.

Varnish aromas subside to reveal raisin-y casis and plum contrasted by celery seed and crushed stone. Again there is a raisin-y edge to the medium bodied flavors. This seems to be at it's peek and should be consumed soon as it doesn't posses the cut or concentration to warrant further aging. Drink now. 88 pts.

Perhaps this was an off bottle, but it didn't knock my socks off. A bit of seaweedy and curranty aromas, perhaps a faint hint of garrigue, but overal pretty restrined, and not what I was hoping for. Served with a smoked pork crown roast. Mid weight palate, not very expressive. ??

Terrific wine, a very youthful showing, much younger than the '01 Clos des Papes at the '01 CdP horizontal last week. The '00 is very balanced and well proportioned, showing tight red fruit, raspberries and cherry fruit, grilled beef juices, spice and garrigue, with nothing coming on too strong. Whereas the '01 is a forward, giving wine, this '00 is still holding back and is in need of a few more years. Possibly the CdP of the vintage for me, as many recent examples of 2000 CdP, while drinking well, don't show the balance, restraint and class that this bottle showed. Sadly, Clos des Papes has become an overpriced trophy wine and I would go so far as to say that recent vintages (perhaps beginning with the '03; definitely the '04 onwards) have become more Parkerized, showing higher viscosity and "gobs" of fruit . . . not this '00, which is about as traditional as a CdP can get.

the one wine i could not get a good sense about, seemed light and unevolved, a bit acidic and the fruit was not strong, it does not seem to be overextracted, the alcohol is in check, so i anticipate that with 5 years this will round out

Jammy fruit, zero complexity. Blind I would have guessed a 2003 CdR. No secondaries at all. Wine I drank had little resemblance to the positive notes below.

Reeks of Chambord/Rasberry jam. Bits of earth and garrigue on the nose but fairly unidirectional on the nose. The palate wasn't much different with overwhelmiing rasberry notes except for a brief showing of black pepper/grilled beef. Alll in all a pleasing Tuesday night wine (with braised pork) but very linear and a touch hot in the finish (alcohol).

From a half bottle off the list of L'Oustau de Baumanière in Les Baux. Really open from the get go with a beautiful nose of black cherry, licorice and some slight earth and pepper notes. Juicy and forward on the palate that is so easy to drink now but still showing enough structure to remind you of its youthfulness. Just a delicious wine.

Half bottle. Black olive, garrigue, pepper and sweet spice on the nose. Deep, rich, lush attack, creamy, good length and lovely structure - acidity nicely balancing the fruit and no heat or sign of excess alcohol. Wish this was a full bottle! ****

Dark purple color in the glass. Nose was not very expressive from a fruit perspective. A touch of barnyard, menthol and some soy sauce on the nose with the alcohol really coming through. Some red fruit on the palate but overweighed by chewy, heavy tannin and high alcohol. Not sure if the wine just needs more time but it doesn't seem that there is enough fruit to overcome what is going on with the tannin and alcohol. Disappointing as the 2005 Clos des Papes blew me away when I first had it.

Hope my other bottle of this is better. Intense fruit nose - raspberry jam, marinated cherries, vanilla cream; full-throttle and a bit one dimensional. Plenty of red berries to taste and certainly attacks well but getting volatile and spirity on the finish.

Imported by Premier Cru. Medium color. Garrigue, licorice, and a bit of fig on the nose. Surprisingly insubstantial in the mouth with bland flavors that rapidly become astringent and dominated by heat and pruniness. Largely resolved tannins. Grossly disappointing. This wine has been all over the map, maddeningly inconsistent. Maybe this reflects different sources?

Rhone and Riesling dinner (Jade Palace, Forum Galleria): My favourite red of the night by some distance, and the best showing I have had of the 2000 Clos des Papes yet. Still rather monolithic and primary on both nose and palate, this wine obviously has a long way to go, but it is such a beautiful drink even now. Lovely nose, with lots of sweet, sappy cherries and minerals. No confection at all though, just a lovely, natural fruit sweetness, almost perfumed, with plenty of brooding complexity underneath. Again, a little primary on the palate, but with such great purity in its expression of rich red fruit, which went seamlessly from the nose to the palate and into the finish. Nice flecks of spice here and there and, again, that buried complexity. A happy, confidently expressive wine this, with lovely, fresh balance and a nice sense of elegance and focus to its exuberant richness. Finish was wonderfully long, with orange peel tones added to the mix. Gorgeous.

Somewhat subdued nose of sweet cherries, ripe strawberries, flowers and a touch of meat. Lithe mouthfeel and very subtle on the initial taste with hints of sweet strawberries - then intensifying through the mid-palate with hints of tar, layers of black pepper, black cherries, forest floor - driving to a spicy, long finish. Plenty to contemplate here with bracing acidity that made this a wonderful accomplice with food.

Was surprisingly accessible at this time. Smooth, sweet fruit nose, essentially no "barnyard" elements. Very well-balanced at this time with solid berry fruits and spices, tannins in balance, garrigue. We were surprised that it was drinking this well at this time. We did not decant, and did not feel that we should have done so.

2000 Chateauneuf-du-Pape tasting (Extra Space, Singapore): Was this the same wine I had 10 months ago? Disappointing at the last try, it was beautiful this time round. Very classic Clos des Papes on the nose - I got lovely sweet cherry fruit, flowers and a light touch of meat. Sleek and feminine, yet with an underlying richness. The palate was similarly rich, with sweet cherries, a very pure expression of the fruit I might add, liquer, licorice, pepper and spice, a little bit of cola and a touch of orange peel. Very long on the finish, it was powerfully persistent, yet gentle at the same time, pulling away with a bit of bittersweet stewed tea leaves and another sprinkling of black pepper. Very well-integrated, very nicely balanced throughout - it was at once open and voluptuous, yet sleek and stylish at the same time. A very complete wine, maybe lacking just that little something special to push it to greatness, but a superb effort nonetheless. Group #3, my #2.

Rather delicious. Less classic than the 2001 showing more ripe and roasted flavors with less of the garrigue and spice than I might expect on the nose. Pepper, raspberry, and soy. The palate does show pure Grenache flavors with good spice and intensity. A rather ripe wine. A bit less exciting than I might have expected, but maybe it was an off bottle? I have more and will try again soon. Day 2: I left 1/3 of a bottle overnight, and it held on OK. The fruit has darkened, although there was definitely a soy/oxidized character that had crept in on the edge. A nice wine but I will stick with my 88 day 1 rating. It just doesn't have the classic beauty of the 2001 or the oomph of 2003 and beyond.

Brought to restaurant (Olivar) and sampled through dinner. Ruby color. Nose of musky strawberry, garrigue, and black pepper. Exuberant red fruits, mostly strawberry and raspberry, nicely balanced by precision and structure. Elegantly textured with a long finish and a touch of spicy-sweet grip at the end. Sampled young, this has a bright future ahead of it and was a perfect accompaniment to the meal. From a 375.

Following the '06 same wine. A similarly dark color, with more earth and meat. This is progressing nicely, although still young. Beautifully clear grenache, with raspberry an dcherry essence, anise, rare meats, provencal herbs. this wine is brilliantly clear and has levels on levels of flavor. This wine is young, but in very beautiful place right now. More evolved and complex than the '06 in its evolution. Still with great balance, and clarity. Wonderful texture and old vine grenache sap on this wine. I'd call the fruit kirsch, but only as it relates to depth, this is not hot at all, just a pure intensity reduction of cherries and some raspberry, while maintaining great freshness and purity. This has it all, garrigue, meats, fruit, and length. A fantastic bottle of wine, and while the 06 may eclipse it some day, today it is flat out fantastic and a wine I could spend a day with, hell probably even take it home to meet mom and dad. 96pts

03 Aubert, 06 Hansel, 03 Foley Claret, 00 Clos des Papes, etc. (Rockridge, CA (Oakland)): This wine was not as good as the one I opened back in February but still it was pretty tasty upon further reflection. Showing raspberries and strawberries, nice acidity/minerality, a little feral quality with some garrigue at the back end. Just not as deep or concentrated as the previous bottle...but still a joy to drink. I have a few more and will be hanging on to them for a few more years.

In a break from tradition, we decanted this wine in advance, which did it no harm at all. Slightly sweet fruit, medium weight, not as intense as some but quite elegant. The 14% alcohol gives it a spirity quality.

Medium ruby. Offputting alcohol on the nose blew off to reveal brown spice and bark, just pure Mourvedre. At this point, it could have been Beaucastel. Deep, tarry, chewy core of black/blue fruit. This improved steadily, picking up some aromatic breadth (caramel and spice), more complex savory notes, and some roundness. In the end, though, it remains dominated by its prominent Mourvedre core. Getting there, though, with significant diminution of the tannic clout that I noted almost a year ago. Excellent, much better than the initial impression, and edging toward maturity. Still, a surprisingly bound up and darker styled Clos des Papes.

This showed really well last night at a dinner with friends. Right out of the bottle, the wine had great aromas of raspberry and kirsch. With a little air, the wine showed a full-bodied palate with fig, garrigue, truffle and meaty flavors. Very long finish added a nice peppery note. This was solid, but needs some time. It continued to evolve over the night and was well received by the group.

Cherries macerated in alcohol. Dull and lifeless on the palate without any energy. This is what many (most) CdPs have become and I don't like it. Ripeness taken to the extreme and the wine is dead on bottling. I'm really blown away by the positive notes. Either these people haven't been drinking real wine for more than 5 years (since most CdPs started tasting like this) or they have lost their senses of smell and taste. A shame.

Double decanted about an hour before serving. I thought this had a slight hint of TCA, but others were adamant it was a clean bottle, and the taint I smelled seemed to ebb and flow so maybe it was something else. Regardless, the nose presented with an attractive blend of red fruit, garrigue, mineral. Refined and elegant as opposed to powerful. On the palate this had great flavor with concentrated red fruit and some earthiness. Once again more elegance than power. Still somewhat tannic. The finish was long and satisfying. An understated but interesting wine.

GoP 4.8 - Wines of Chateauneuf-du-Pape (with a little detour) (Extra Space, Singapore): I think we should have decanted this for awhile because, while still very decent, this was not showing all that fantastically. Slightly oxidised on the nose, with soy saucey notes coming out first. Thank goodness this was only slightly, and familiar Clos des Papes scents of sweetish cherry, meat and leather came to the fore along with less pleasant whiffs of glycerin. The alchy-ness carried on to the rather dense, thickish palate too, giving the wine a rather unintegrated feel. Otherwise, it showed flavours of sweet, very ripe, very dark cherries, licorice and a minerally finish with okay length. Grippy tannins rounded the wine off. While not flabby, I would have preferred a little more freshness. Overall, It came across rather one dimensional. Not a bad wine by any means, but I tend to expect more from Clos des Papes, and this was certainly a dissapointment after the knock-out 2003 that I recently had.

Red color with a little bit of bricking. Beautiful aromas of raspberry, spice and earth. Rich fruit, with garrigue and earthiness in the mouth. Medium-bodied, silky and well-balanced, with a strong acidic spine for structure. None of the vanilla notes or alcoholic heat of some of the other recent notes. As good of a bottle of wine that I've had in some time. WOTN at our party.

Decanted 2 hours. Bright garnet. Took almost 3 hours to really bloom, but bloom it did. Red cherries and raspberries with vanilla, garrique, and earth. Soft silky fruit with nice depth, weight and layering. Tannins are well integrated and smooth and the acidity is subtle but nicely cleansing. Was great with grilled veal loin chops and grilled artichoke and serrano risotto.

This absolutely did not suck. At a "Magnum Madness" dinner, this and the 1994 Stag's Leap S.L.V. cabernet were the class of the evening. This was decanted for about 5 hours from Magnum. Really nice. Not quite as awe-inspiring as some reviews would have you believe, but unquestionably excellent. And not too young to approach now.

Clos des Papes Vertical (Tribeca Grill): A very good wine that will require a measure of patience. The nose of sweet red fruit is a mit obscured by a distracting dollop of vanilla. Once that integrates it will be able to express better some of the bloody beef and garrigue characterisics underlying. Fairly big, but not outsized, in the mouth, there seemed to be a little less in the way of tannin and acidity, but certainly was enough to carry the fruit. It was a little less evolved than the '98, but was still fairly open and friendly. That said, just because you can drink it doesn't mean you should and allowing time for the pieces to knit together is a must for this wine. It shows great promise.

Limpid ruby core and garnet rim; high red ripe sherbetty fruit, touch vanilla and dry earthiness; full glycerine bodied with a slightly tart/acidic mid palate; good length but a little hot and acidic (88). Having saved some of the bottle overnight the next evening the wine was rounder, less acidic, richer and still quite hot.

LMA brought this to an offline this week. Probably the most restrained wine at this event in my opinion. Exceedingly smooth. In fact, I wish it had a little more bite which may come with more aging. Red fruit notes with a moderate finish. Hold this wine. 89-91+ points.

A shade darker than the last bottle, but only medium color and saturation. Initial funk and tree bark spoke of Mourvedre. Then higher tones of menthol came out. Not as much herbs as last time. Dark fruit and quite tannic, overall medium weight and some sense of elegance. Not closed but at an awkward stage tonight and showing very young.

Not sure about this - a whiff of oxidation? Or was it just a bit too much oatmeal/biscuit from the grenache? Still plenty of soft, blood-red fruit, quite porty on the nose, a bit of kirsch and those things coming through into the flavour. Youthful, moderately intense ripe fruits and quite drinkable now, still a touch of pepper but not much. Quite burgundian in style - but for me not as good as the 2000 Pegau Reservee.

Kitchen Tasting Group Does Beaver Creek – Day Two: Opened and decanted about six hours before being served. Really never opened up to my taste. This is a nice clean CdP that can be described as Burgundian for its palate presence, and really wasn't showing a lot of CdP character yet. I'd call it good in an understated way at the moment, but have every expectation that it will be far better with additional bottle age.

Craig Vanderah's Annual BBQ (Pax, Kosta Brown, Beaucastel, Donjon, Turley, Loring, Neal): The nose offers a beautiful expression of red fruit, garrigue, earth, and iron in a much lighter/happier style than the Vieux Donjon. Upon further reflection (and after consulting Chris and Steve) the nose had a slight issue with VA. Noticeable, but not damning. On the palate this had great concentrated red fruit with some slight earthiness, but probably on the simple side. Still somewhat tannic. The finish was long and satisfying. An excellent but extremely understated bottle of wine for current consumption.

Night 1 - opened and poured: fandabidozi! Night 2 - after too much other stuff to notice; Night 3: medium ruby red rim; intense black fruit/olives, minerals and dried herbs on the nose; medium+ acidity and medium+ tannins carried on a medium(-) body. Flavour intensity on the palate somewhat weaker than the nose and the medium finish surprises slightly on the short side. Lovely, look forward to seeing the other 11 develop.

Dinner with Chris (2000 CdP -- Beaucastel, Mon Aieul, Clos des Papes): Popped and poured. Deep red color. The nose is a brighter red fruit than the previous wines with some beef blood and floral notes. Reserved compared to the Mon Aieul. A bit reserved and very clean smelling. The taste is dominated by the concentrated red fuit at this point. Well balanced. Some tannin left to resolve. The finish lingers and is very, very nice. This is a beautiful bottle of wine that needs a few more years in the cellar to show all of what it's got.

I've always had good luck with this vintage of this wine. I'll defer to Harry and others, but I like this better than the popular 2004 Clos des Papes. Why? It seems like the alcohol is more hidden than in the 2004. In fact, the 2000 seems like a nice, balanced, medium-bodied Chateauneuf du Pape, with another decade at least under its belt. Very lovely ruby/black cherry color, seems to be a well-made wine. Rating: 93 points

Out the gate this was more subtle than I had expected. It is a light medium bodied wine with a very good bloody color and a nose of stewed cherries. There were times when, as I drank, there seemed to be a very light note of tca. I could never confirm this, and the wine was very good. Well, at first I was not too impressed because I had expected a more overt style. This is not that. Once I got into the groove of the wine, I found it to be subtle, mineral, and in possession of garrigue with beautiful kirsch and cherry elements. I can’t say that this wine was profound, it was confounding, but it kept me on my toes. I’m glad I have more. I don’t see this as a 95 point wine, maybe 93, but it’s a very good 93.

Strawberry color. Intense mouth but oddly, surprisingly light -- as Winnie said simply, "it's delicious, really. Enticing and delicious" The weight is deceptive somehow. Medium bodied / powerfully flavored -- this is a combination to strive for. Other wines like this on my tongue are usually so much heavier in my mouth. The nose was an hour late for the train but then THERE IT WAS BLACKBERRY. And walnut. Here she is this wine's just touching your shoulder and surprising you with her elegance. Lots of licorice too. For its power it's oddly refreshing.

Surprisingly light in color, in fact, at first looked more like Pinot, but deepened over time. Cooler aromatics than the year would suggest, with menthol, green olives, and thyme dominating rather than fruit components. Later, a strong kirsch component. This has significant structure centered around brisk acidity that needs time to resolve. This gives the wine an initially lean feel more akin to a '99, but there is a terrific core of black fruit that is buried and comes to the forefront with additional air. On the young side and not particularly lush or easy right now, this has the stuffing and structure to develop for a long time. I enjoyed it very much tonight, finding its complexity and evolution captivating, but I also think that it has fantastic upside potential. This became obvious as the wine gained color and fleshed out impressively over a few hours, but it is still holding quite a bit back.

WOW, great wine with rich and deep fruit reserves. Raspberry, blackberry, mminerals and spice all mixed up to give you a flavor profile that lingers on and on. The nose shows nice fruit with richness and it continues to develop nuance as it opens up during the night. 4.5/5

Sweet red fruit, and a few secondary hints (earth, tobacco). Refreshing acidity, making for a well balance wine...A little unexciting, perhaps, but I'm rarely excited by Grenache.

Splash decanted before pouring. This one could have used even more time in the decanter as it was continuing to come together as the evening progressed. Nose of crushed raspberries and cherries mixed with red licorice. Medium to full bodied. The flavors match the nose very well, however I would have expected a longer finish.

30th Birthday Dinner: From a 375ml bottle, double decanted for 4 hours. More evolved than the 750ml which I had a year ago. Beautiful, seductive nose, showing lots of secondary characteristics, including truffles and cigar tobacco. Danced on the palate with lightness, but backed by great power. Perfect complement for the Provencal lamb. Compared with the 1999 Vieux Donjon, this was more aristocratic and much more interesting and complex.

Five wines on a random Saturday afternoon (Ron's House): Brilliant bottle. All the stuffing one expects from a top-tier CdP. Typical CdP in the garrigue, kirsch, herb flavors and smells, but so much more depth than even the good wines from the same year and appelation I have tried. Ron appreciated this one as much as I did, I believe. This was my backup for the Chapoutier that I (incorrectly so) thought may be flawed.

This was a disappointing bottle. I assume it was flawed in some way, although it was definitely not corked. Decanted 90 minutes. Color was a very nice saturated dark ruby, and initially the nose was promising, with red fruits, and a bit of garrigue and earth. I wish I'd taken a taste right after popping the cork. But at dinner the wine took on a quality in the nose that I've not encountered much. It had a gasoline, volatile-like quality that was out of place. (Is this what's called VA?) The fruit and other complexities were masked by this. In the mouth was a faint mash of red fruit and some darker flavors, although it did have a nice mouthfeel with little tannic grip. But it was alcoholic and hot on the back end, and took on a faintly pruney quality. Did it fall apart in the decanter? This is certainly not the wine described by other CellarTrackers. There was something gone awry with this bottle.... I believe good stuff was lurking in there somewhere, so here's hoping the next one will be better.

We brought a magnum to Jardiniere for a birthday dinner party. It was by far the best wine we drank that night. It went extremely well with the NY steak I had. We had them decant it for 90 min and at different times I could taste the grenanche and others taste the syrah. Wine Spectator give this a drinking window through 2006. This wine has a few more years left. I wish I had more. It is an age-worthy wine.

2000 Chateauneuf-du-Pape: Had not had this since release (3 yrs+). Tasted side by side with the '00 Beaucastel (see TN), the two wines were quite different. The Clos des Papes had fruit that leans farther to the red side of the spectrum, with slightly pruney fruit, a gamey, ever so slightly oxidized note, and dusty, spicy tannins. A nice, Grenache-driven, traditional Chateauneuf.

Decanted for 90 minutes. Medium-bodied wine that is dark ruby in color. On the nose, fairly subdued dark cherries and spice box. On the palate, kirsch, white pepper, and a touch of garrigue wrapped in a tight minerality. Supple, smooth, well-balanced wine with mildly grippy, fine-grained tannins and a very long 30-second finish. Elegant in style, rather than powerful. This wine seems quite young to me. While drinking well right now, I do think it needs more time to really show what it can do...note that it took 2 hours tonight to open up sufficiently. I look forward to seeing how the nose develops in years to come...I can't help but think this wine is hiding something even better than what it is sharing thus far!

From .375- very dark purple- extremely intense raspberry nose with some garrigue and pepper. The palate is thick raspberries with more than a hint of roastiness. A bit over the top for me right now- will have to see how this settles down over time.

The good news about cellar tracker? I see that i have had this wine 5 times since september and have quite a bit left. the bad news? why wasn't i paying attention? why have i had so many of these over the last few months? probably because it is one of the best 2000 CNPs i have had! tonight we had this with filets of beef with a balsamic sauce that was fantastic- this wine really opens up in the glass but adds structure and tannin over time as well. the wine is ruby red, it is all about spice box, white pepper, red fruit, garrigue, tannins, and a bit of anise. This wine is very young and will last for a long long time, but tasates great now- you can still find this for around $45-50 and i have to say that is a very good value. (i like a letter scale instead of the 100 point version- and this is a solid A that will only get better).

Decanted 1.5 hours There was a definite stink on the nose of this wine. Very bretty, which I normally like. Unfortunately, this was different, not horse, not stable, just odd. The palate was typical Chateauneuf. This had nice upfront fruit, great density on the palate, nice thick mouthfeel and a moderate finish. For me, a good wine, not a great wine. My wife liked it better than I, not the norm for a Chateauneuf.

Deep, almost opaque crimson in color. The nose is fleshy, very ripe, a little oaky but very pleasant. The palate shows good minerality and grenache flare. The palate is very sweet, easy going with white chocolate, sandalwood and spice with a hint of black licorice on the finish. Doesn't seem to have the depth or length I'd expect. 92 points. (An hour later...) OMFG, who put a slice of heaven in my glass? Much deeper and filled out. A little "porty" but that is good in my book. More tannins are evident. More everything is evident. This is fantastic wine. This is clearly a sleeping beauty.

The nose has enticing bright fruit, slightly spirity. On the palate it is simply delicious, with intense, ripe fruit; refined and balanced. The finish is very satisfying, with lots of spice and restrained but persistent tannins. It needs some time to really show at its best. For young Chateauneuf, I'm not sure it gets much better, except for the 2003. exc-

Mid-ruby. Powerful fruit nose. Smooth and mellow, with lovely, almost pinot flavours. Definitely Burgundian. Very little tannin. Good length. Very forward and surprisingly approachable for such young Chateauneuf. Opens out for a day with more complexity and tannin. Delicious. vg

This still had a lot of flavor to it - fair amount of berry fruits on the front. The tannins were long gone and this was incredibly smooth of the back. Very good wine, also had the 2008 later that night and it was a much more powerful wine as expected.

Very fruit forward, I can see why some people who prefer a classic style CpD, but I find this to be very elegant and light on it's feet, while still having plenty of fruit and complexities from it's age. On the palate ripe dark berries, a lot of good garrigue, beautiful acidity and also beautiful and mild tannin. This is a lovely wine right now and even though the alcohol shows a little bit in the finish this wine definitely deserves a score of 93 at least.

Very good.

Bright ruby color, no browning. Nose of dried red fruits, baking spice, cedar, some smokiness. Palate of dark cherry, plums, herbs, spice/cinnamon. Mid palate showed savory notes to complement the fruit. Long and layered finish.

We drink zee French vino (Chez Simo Bistro, Chicago IL): Nose: Savory and polished with black fruits, black cherries, garrigue, briary notes, and some violets. This is more based on finesse and is well layered too.

91? points.

I am not a big fan of very ripe fruit expression but some may appreciate it a lot more. I would definitely enjoy this more in a cold night with a roasted game.

93 points.

We have enjoyed all other 2000s (Beaucastel, Janasse, Pegau, etc) but are thinking this wasn't a great effort by Clos des Papes. We basically poured it out, and again, this is the third bottle.

Stunning.

Medium full bodied, mostly savory with earth and dried cherry fruit. Decent, but perhaps a bit past its prime for my tastes. 90-91.

Very different in style with the rest of CDP tonight. A good wine that drinking quite nicely, but relatively simple and clearly 2notches down from the last bottle. This is so overwhelming by the rest of the CDP. Buy - No.

Excellent. 90+

Gorgeous.

96pts

Showing raspberries and strawberries, nice acidity/minerality, a little feral quality with some garrigue at the back end. Just not as deep or concentrated as the previous bottle...but still a joy to drink. I have a few more and will be hanging on to them for a few more years.

This was dark in color. The nose was very port like, heavy in fig, herbs, and over ripe fruit. There was a nice mineral quality, but it just didn't have the depth or complexity that makes a wine great.

As good of a bottle of wine that I've had in some time. WOTN at our party.

For young Chateauneuf, I'm not sure it gets much better, except for the 2003. exc-

Pure kirsch liqueur with a fabulous, glycerin loaded texture. Great intensity of flavor, yet elegant, not over the top. Still young, not much secondary stuff there yet, but oh, so good...

a little off? no concensus or much support for this from the group. it seemed to be holding something back that i couldn't ID, so i'm going with being closed. could develop into a stunner. rating withheld.

Mid-ruby. Powerful fruit nose. Smooth and mellow, with lovely, almost pinot flavours. Definitely Burgundian. Very little tannin. Good length. Very forward and surprisingly approachable for such young Chateauneuf. Opens out for a day with more complexity and tannin. Delicious. vg
