Developed colour, but still intense enough, closed at first, needs time to open in the glass, gets more aromatic, dried black fruit, smoky, tannic structure, after some time gets softer.

More youthful than I would have anticipated but ultimately didn’t fully come together on the palate to do what we were hoping this wine could be. My experience seems to be rather different from those in the board who have recently enjoyed this wine so perhaps some storage concern/variation with this one.

Beautiful wine. Deep scarlet in colour with little bricking. Nose of iron ore, coffee, cedar, cigars, leather and dark black fruits. Lovely yet firm tannic finish, it’s LLC and it’s a “75 right, but lovely especially with protein. A half bottle decanted for tomorrow night 18.5. Day 2 and this bottle is even better, with more complex fruits on show, glossy blackcurrants, coffee grounds and with the roasted vintage character appearing at the finish. Lovely wine/lovely bottle 18.75

Medim crimson in color with distinct clearing & slight bricking at the edges. Full, forward & fragrant nose of mature, ripe fruit aromas of cherries, plums & cassis with overtones of earthy/dusty & herbal notes, tobacco, cedar, graphite, leather, gravel, minerals & a hint of iron/rust in the background. Medium bodied with a good concentration of balanced & smooth textured, aged, ripe fruit flavors of sour cherries, cassis & plums with earthy/dusty, herbs & minerals. Lingering smooth finish. Drinks quite well at present but at 48 years of age it appears to be in its decline, so drink up. Ullage was at lower neck below capsule; cork was stained the 3/4 length but intact.

[Blind] Deceptively youthful. Guesses included ‘80s and ‘90s. Espresso, lead pencil, leathers, drying red and black fruit. Dry, very structured, very classic. Clearly Bordeaux. Has some dark fruit hanging on. Grippy, tannic.

While this was better than my previous encounter, (provenance matters) the wine is on the strict, firm, old-school, peppery, herb, and leafy, crisp, red currant side of the style range. You need to be a fan of this style to appreciate it, as there is a distinctive firmness and green edge to the bright, red fruit and cigar note in the finish. Drink from 2023-2030.

Clear medium red. Medium intense nose, cedar box, tobacco, cassis and plum nose. Still some really nice fruit hanging on. Earthy cassis and plum flavours and a surprisingly tannic finish.
This hung on for hours. Never collapsed in the glass.

Lots of cabernet aromas with sweet mature notes, figs, toffee and some brett. Dry with elegance, almost resolved tannin but also a bit thin with fading fruit. Balance and lenght ok but overall on a downhill trajectory.

Tasted next to 1975 Chateau Latour. This was a very close second to the Latour. Both bottles were perfectly stored and wonderfully mature. The differentiating factor is that the Latour kept on going throughout the night and the LLC didn't fair as well in the decanter after 3 hours. Nevertheless, this bottle was excellent!

Birth year bottle purchased somewhat on a lark last year. Had no idea what sort of shape the wine would be in, but fill level was still top shoulder and gave it a go over a birthday weekend. Hats off to the sommelier who spent the better part of 20 minutes working the very soft cork out of the bottle. Once open the wine was great. Still some fruit to my taste, pleasant touch of acidity and just a great, well balanced wine. My first time drinking something much more than 25 years old, so not much to compare it to and maybe colored by sharing with friends over a birthday, but the overall experience was super.

It's been a very long time since I last drank a Leoville Las Cases, which in my younger days I considered my favorite wine. And with good reason, as any of you who might have drunk this wine in its youth in the 70s and 80s may attest - a powerful wine that is best described as an iron fist in a velvet glove. So seductive, and so memorable.
This particular bottle was the last of the case I bought as a future, and it has had a long history with me, "suffering" through its first almost 30 years in less than ideal conditions, including being not quite frozen when a pipe burst in my in-laws house during a winter freeze, and subsequently being stored in a coat closet in my apartment before being given pride of place - and never moved -in a EuroCave for the past 15 or so years. In celebration of my birthday, we opened the bottle with trepidation.
The cork crumbled as it was removed, but the aroma that issued set all fears set aside, the wine was intact, and - to my mind - glorious. An assertive but not overwhelming acidity served as the foundation from which the bottle drew its strength. There were no "fruit" notes, at least not in the usual sense of the word. Instead, strong notes of cinnamon and allspice issued from the bottle, evolving through the evening, no two sips quite the same. Wonderful
Rated +3 on a scale of -1 to +3.

Served with a rib roast, this had leather, pencil shavings, cigar box and dried black fruits. Tannins were perfectly resolved.
Served alongside a 2004 Gattinara, which tasted too acidic and tannic in comparison. I didn’t love this, but I’ve never had a 1975 Bordeaux that really wowed me.

It was father's day on a rainy June afternoon in London - felt like the appropriate bottle to reach for. Delivered the goodies on pnp with surprising lift and freshness - almost a bit fizzy and Burgundian acidity - classic cassis, leather and earth notes. Moderate alcohol, medium length, very easy to reach for the next glass. A really good showing and this bottle could have gone for another few decades no issues.

Cork broke when opening. Brownish colour with a darker core. Aromas of earth, mushrooms, forest floor and smoke. Quite balanced with a hint of pointed acidity. Tannins are round. Still enjoyable with food but won't stick in your mind as a great wine. 90 credits for its age and the vintage given.

I had the 1990 last week and wanted to try one of my favourite vintages the 1975. What a wine! LLC takes a while to come around but the 1975 was excellent not as good as the 1990 but great in its own way. A wine to seek out. Very closed initially but came to life after a 2 hour decant.

One of the very few benefits of the lockdown is the urge to dig out and drink some old bottles. This was an utter delight!! Level well into neck. Opened an hour before drinking then decanted. Colour bright with graduated bricking. Nose subdued to start but after 30 minutes blossomed into classic St Julien. Elegant and subtle rather than usual LLC power. Gorgeous layered red fruit showing with the tannins melded in behind. Lovely balanced mouthfeel. Went very well with welsh black beef fillet and mushrooms.

Dark purple red. Dense mature nose of dark fruits, dark humus earth, a trace of animale and sauvage. Masculine palate, blackberry, sloe, charcuterie, bitter dark chocolate, hints of coffee grounds, robust but youthful, powerful, yet elegant. Powdery tannins. Delightful.

Decanted almost three hours before drinking. The nose was exuberant and just gorgeous immediately, which made me regret opening so far in advance - how could it stay like that for the next few hours? It was never that pungent again, but it was just classic and lovely mature claret, with plenty of verve. Richness of fruit, musk, leather. Great palate presence and balance, and a musky, sapid length that fills the sinuses. Even at a bbq with a lot going on, I appreciated this wine for it’s grace and class.

Clear bright medium red. Secondary nose, poop, mint, cherry, spice and menthol. I was not embarrassed to guess Burgundy. Spicy, earth black cherry flavours and. Long dry textured finish.
This is a group of wine lovers who have deep cellars of well aged Bordeaux. It’s not really my thing, but when you experience a wine like this it is a real treat.

Blind. Quite clearly aged Cabernet with mature red fruits, wet cedar, cigar and bell pepper. Palate has good sweetness in the fruit. Still has some firmness in the structure, though the tannins are essentially resolved. I guessed 70s Napa Cab.

"Wines that don't suck" (Chicago, IL): Fairly classic old Bordeaux elements here; it's not a tough wine to guess blind and most of the group got there pretty quickly. Lots of leather, as well as some herbal elements as well. It's a very structural wine, but there are hints of drying but still sweet fruits that supplement the structure. Not one I personally would care to age further.

Michael's wine. Perhaps better than Bill's bottle four years ago in initial fruit, but this faded in the glass somewhat. Also, the wine may have got a bit more stirred up on it's trip to the restaurant than desirable. I have certainly had better 75 Bordeauxs.

As I read a string of tasting notes like these on a very old wine, it becomes clear that what is transcendent in these notes is is not the quality of the wine, but storage. Ever thus. This wine has been impeccably well stored since acquisition upon release. No brownish rim, no hint of tired fruit. Your basic riveting incisive cedar boxy tobacco powerful Bordeaux with plenty of life ahead. Last vintage I think we'll see of old style Bordeaux. For my part, I will miss it.

Chateau Leoville Las Cases Vertical with James Handford MW (Handford Wines, London): Finally some discolouration and age shows here. Red coloured with brownish rim. This wine albeit a 92 overall is a 95 adjusted for the vintage and the joy it will deliver to lovers of well aged Bordeaux. Soft red fruits, earthy feel, still very much healthy on the fruit side. We should say one should have this sooner than later but really the wine has legs to go for some more summers. 92

Leoville Las Cases with Pierre Graffeuille (Ripple): Pierre described this as another era for the chateau. They don't even know the blend. Yields were high at 55hl/ha and all the crop made it into the grand vin. It smells kind of autumnal as many 1970s clarets do, but the fruit is sweeter and more vibrant on the palate than you'd anticipate from the nose. Pretty red-fruited cassis flavors. Pleasant wine but easy to lose in the mix with all the superpower vintages around it.

Léoville Las Cases dinner with Pierre Graffeuille (Ripple Restaurant in DC): The 75 tells me that the cellar of Leoville Las Cases is impeccable. Fully mature yet clean and energetic nose displaying a hint of cassis and plum, strong cedar, leather, tobacco, mint, caramel and lead pencil. Beautiful harmonious palate, nothing out of place, silky and sensual, bright acidity, good mineral presence and a long sweet finish that subtly resonates. This is a really complete classic claret. Best showing by far, still retaining good amount of sweet fruit. The reason why we love mature Bordeaux. The surprise of the night.

Last of 24, decanted nearly 2 hours, level top shoulder, spongey saturated cork, previous bottles at least fine but tannins could be obtrusive, particularly in 90s and early 00s, aging deepish garnet, lightening rim; complex bouquet, nice blend of fruit, tobacco and cedar, aristocratic; medium full, very long, complex and persistent, much more fruit apparent in this and last few bottles with earlier slightly lumpy dry tannins at last resolved, wish I had a few more bottles. VF (18.5). Vieing with excellent 88 as WOTN, though I expect the youthful 95 eventually to eclipse them.

Well evolved in colour around the rim, still fairly dark core. Odd nose, quite vegetal and funky, but also showing notes of tobacco, earth, spices. On the palate well balanced at first, not much fruit left but still showing a firm backbone of tannins, well integrated acidity, slightly spicy, leathery. Good length. As the evening went on, the acidity stuck out more and more. 86-88

LLC dinner at 10 Greek Street. This was my third wine of the night ( 14 vintages of LLC), 1961 and 1934 taking the lead. This was a fine bottle, beautifully resolved, elegant, characterful with a fine backbone, underscored by minerals and notes of hazelnut nuttiness not dissimilar to the 1961.

Dark velvet, dense and brilliant colored with fine and sophisticated aromatics of berries, sweet cherries and little plum. Shows light and fresh with pinewood, mint and dried herbs, iron and dark nuances of earth, tobacco and leather. Inviting sweetnees of pastries. Medium-bodied, silky and very alive on the palate. Finishes long with licorice and herbal spiciness, precise and of gentle power. An elegant, vital and complex wine that is excellent now, but good for many years, due to solid, yet approachable, tannins and present acidity. A perfect bottle and, by the way, the best (out of three) we had from this wine over the last year. One of the stars from a vintage that favored Pauillac and Saint Julien.

Still dark garnet with a fair bit of sediment. Herbaceous but the red fruit was still hanging on. Las Cases is always a monster and at 40 years old this bottle was no exception. Intense aromas of spent coffee grounds, damp leather, creosote, and smouldering tar. Just silk, texturally. Showing that it is a bit tired towards the end, this wine still delivered an opening bang. Probably a good time to harvest this bottle from your cellar.

Opened by Allred. Decanted for sediment only. Garnet red color. I think I liked this wine better than most of the others at the dinner. Smooth texture with good acidity. Some tar and asphalt aromas on the nose. Notes of spices, leather and currants. Medium+ body with integrated tannins. Did not like this as much as the 1999 or 2000 but this was very nice. 92 points.

Top shoulder, decanted 45 minutes. This showed well, and improved with air. Never flashy, and always a little leaner on the palate than you would like, but I still find this the most consistent of the '75 Bordeaux's that I have had multiple times, and holding better than most. Still good fill on this bottle - just at the bottom of the neck. Good color. Not much on the nose. Faded fruit but by no means hollow although this is definitely past prime. Smoke, tobacco and leather notes with just a touch of caramel and the remains of plummy fruit. Still some detectable tannins but very fine and soft. Acid seems to be on the high side. Not much of a finish. Decent, but a bottle of the same wine drunk last year was in much better shape. Fell apart 30 minutes after opening. Since I spent just about $35.00 on this, not a bad purchase.

Drew's 40th: Classic old school Bordeaux nose but this went downhill from there. Drying tannins and with unbalanced acidity overtaking the fruit. A much harder wine than both the 86 Mouton and Cheval Blanc. An austere style of Bdx that, based on this bottle, would have been better a few years ago. The person who brought this indicated he's had other better bottles so this might not be representative.

This bottle seemed a bit faded. It was generally a bit soft in the mouth, except that the finish showed an unusual dry tannin aspect. Strange. The fruit was OK but a bit tired. This would have been better as part of a dinner, I think. In a tasting setting, it was overwhelmed by other more interesting wines.

- Garnet color and aromas of black currant, cut green grass and almond. It's balanced and has flavours of strawberry and bell pepper with a full body. Smooth texture with a long finish - Opened this wine for Mother's Day. 75min decant and back in the washed out bottle to take to a restaurant. There after another 30min was an emerging wine. It truly had amazing layers of strawberries and green vegetable. I wasn't expecting this amazing wine considering its Vintage but the wine was beautifully balanced. The finish goes on and on. Mostly Bordeaux, starring '82 GPL, '75 LLC and '88 Climens (Mr. and Mrs. Vino's): Decanted several hours prior to drinking and consumed over 4 hours. Solid red core, lightening at rim with just a little bricking. Killer complex classic aged Bordeaux nose with cassis, cherry, cedar, tobacco and tea leaves, wet earth. Medium bodied, well balanced, flavors and complexities follow the nose with the classic sweet aged Bordeaux palate, a little harsher finish than the 1982 Grand Puy Lacoste. After about an hour the wine turns tougher and more rustic, but then returns to its former self. I don't think it was my palate as others noted the same, and the other wines being drunk were not undergoing a similar change. This waxing and waning went on through the evening. When the wine was on it was outstanding, with fading back and forth to very good/excellent.

The bottle, in perfect condition, was opened and decanted approximately thirty minutes before serving. In the glass the wine was a medium garnet color, fading slightly at the edge, and fairly translucent. On the nose the wine exhibited a strong meaty scent (like grilled pancetta), accompanied by burnt matches, dark chocolate, and sherry. The palate exhibited nice red fruit and a long finish. A fantastic wine that's got nowhere to go but down. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Popped & poured- not decanted- just before our entrées arrived. Displays a healthy garnet core which fades only slightly towards the meniscus. Initial tatse & assessment: whoa, lovely red fruit, and a lot of it! i quickly poured glasses for Domino and I and then tastes for all of the staff who were nearby. Aromas of red currants, tobacco, Indian spices, lavender and cedar. The tannins have completely integrated- one might not think this was a '75. Elegant and seamless across the palate, featuring flavors of berries, cedar, florals, sweet red fruit and perhaps a bit of leather too. Medium finish. I was surprised by the amount of fruit left in this wine for the first 45 minutes it was open, but it wasn't much longer before it took on a dark fruit profile and turned a bit tart.

Another Weeknight Tasting (Dave's House): Popped and poured, followed over approximately 2 hours. Great fill level of very top shoulder. Cork extraction proved to be a little difficult using an Ah So as it started to crack down the middle. After that, we switched to a corkscrew and managed to get the cork from the bottle with no bits falling in to the wine. The cork however, ended up in 3 pieces. As this was my bottle, I got first sniff and taste. On first pass, I detected some slight sherry notes, which had me thinking oxidization, but this quickly dissipated. In the glass, this was quite healthy in colour for a wine entering it's 37th year. Obviously some bricking at the rim of the glass, but the core remains a deep garnet colour. With a few minutes in the glass, the nose offered up huge black currant notes, along with licorice, cedar, tobacco, leather, undergrowth, truffle and light green note in the form of menthol and eucalyptus. On the palate many of these aspects are mirrored, with the menthol aspect being most prominent on the finish. Surprisingly, this was almost refreshing, showing a great acidic backbone, fully integrated tannin, and relatively light weight in the mouth. The wine leaves a bit to be desired on the finish, but overall, a wonderful experience.

Cork was wet and tricky to remove without crumbling - but accomplished. First nose and taste after decanting was dark red fruit. Finish was bordeux-ish, but lighter. almost X-mas evening with Arjen: Popped and poured American style at the end of a evening with Cos 85+86, Talbot 1986 and Domaine de Chevalier 1966. At first very, very sweet, a bit tired, old and one dimensional. After one hour, wine became fuller, darker, multi layered and developed into a very beautiful classic Bordeaux. Age shows on the rim, nose with 2nd and 3rd stage characteristics like cedar, mushrooms, tobacco, spicy herbs, eucalyptus, licorice, leather, meat, blood, but still some ripe fruits like plums, raspberry and strawberry. Amazing how old Bordeaux wines from good breed slowly get their act together and get younger by the minute. After two hours young, vital feshness returmed and told us that well stored bottles will easily last for 10+ years.

Lovely mature wine drinking perfectly now, with no signs of the tannins one might have expected from this house in a vintage like 1975. Has aged beautifully in my friend's underground cellar all these years.
Still has attractive, mature red fruits with plenty of mushrooms and some old cedar and surprising weight in the palate; almost plush. Excellent wine but nowhere near as impressive (far less nose, flavour and overall complexity) than an 83 Latour drunk from the same cellar a couple of weeks earlier.

Mature Classified Growth Bordeaux gathering at Lavandou (Washington DC): Fully matured showing mostly tertiary notes with shy expression of sweet red fruits, cedar, lead pencil, mushroom and wet autumn leaves. The palate displays sweet silky fruit and integrated tannins which is a good thing. As Chris B said, the 75s seems finally coming around, ie tannins are not too bothersome. A classic claret that is drinking well.

Old Bordeaux: while a nice wine, it was a bit off balance with its tannins protruding, like a dress with too much fluff on the shoulders. No degree of age or build to the model would bring it back into shape. It still had lovely red cassis driven fruit and superb texture, but never quite hits the stride that one expects from Las Cases.

Older Bordeaux (Chez Glowa - Bethesda, MD): Thought this showed very nicely. Had good complexity on the nose with mushroom and cedar with graphite and cranberry in the background. Palate was in a good spot with sous bois, cassis, graphite and potpourri. Finish had nice length and complexity. I would guess that this is drinking close to its peak. Very nice.

Base neck fill. 30 minute decant. This was drinking really well. Still good color, great nose, and a very good finish with fully resolved tannins. Showing solid fruit, secondaries, earth. Nose is the best part, and it is not going to get any better but hoping it holds as this is just great with food. A-

Figeac vs Las Cases: the big guns (Washington, DC): 75 has been a tough vintage for me with Bordeaux but this Las Cases seemed to be in a right spot for consumption. It isn't as angry as some of the other 75s; has shed a lot of that structure but the angular tannins still persist on the finish! The wine which will never be ready (wait, that is 82 las cases)! Sous bois, mushrooms and saddle along with a lovely robe of cherry and berry driven fruit. Has a lot of structure to it Good stuff.

We had a magnum of this last night at LGP. It was a good bottle. The color as expected - dark brownish red. I was surprised by how clean and controlled this wine was - it never let up. Burnt rubber at the end like other Bordeaux of its age. An excellent Bordeaux for those who like these wines. Not for me.

1980s Bordeaux; 6/18/2010-6/20/2010: Lovely, yet shy bouquet, still tastes young but not really primary. Good typicity, hard to believe this is 35 years old! The tannins must be masking the fruit, but it’s not hard or tight, just subdued.

Vanilla and red fruits. Paired very well with duck. Needed about an hour to open. Not sure why 75 is referred to as a weak vintage, this bottle was outstanding. I would not mind a few more bottles.

The bottle wasn't the best. The cork was almost totally wet so I believe better bottles will have more to offer. However even this one gave nice comeback to old school bdx. Lots of pencil, ceder wood and harmonious tanins.

This wine showed very well--slightly below the big 3 of Latour, Lafite and Mouton. But it had a lot of life, good tannins, fruit and typical barnyard aromas. This wine has a while to go. Nice acidity, fruit on the palate and substantial complexity-well balanced. it finished 4th out of the 7 bordeax's, but we're not complaining and I wish I had some more botlles.

I was very skeptical about this bottle, but knew that it has been well stored in our cellar for the last few years. Popped and poured tonight, Valentine's Day at Tastebuds in New Hope, PA. This was a classic example of a mature Bordeaux, from what was supposed to be a weak vintage. Regardless, this showed well, and had a good fill well into the neck. Cork was soaked 80% of the way through, with the faintest sign of mold under the foil. Nonetheless, it came out in one piece, which surprised me...or maybe our server was just that good with the corkscrew! Regardless, we gave him a nice taste, and he seemed to appreciate and enjoy it. Good on ya! Nice to see someone with a nice appreciation for the nectar of the God's at a BYOB! Deep garnet color in the glass, with the slightest bit of bricking, but this was more of a purple color with a slight fading around the rim, which surprised me. A bit of band aid on the nose, with some nice hints of cherry, pencil lead, wet slate, tobacco, leather and cedar. There was also the slightest bit of sweetness on the nose. On the palate, I was absolutely shocked, not expecting much in the least. Very nice mature cherry and strawberry on the palate, with a little bit of spice and cedar/leather. Some other red fruits were on the palate, but didn't really dominate, and were hard to identify, but had some berry like qualities. Overall, I was surprised there was as much fruit on the palate as there was. The finish was nothing to write home about, and albeit a bit short, it was smooth, the acidity was nice, and the tannins were well integrated. It was no 1982, but it was nice and pleasant, and worth of 92 points. Happy Valentine's Day! Cheers!

Similar to last note, from a bottle with a mid-shoulder fill. Good color for its age. A little thin and short on the finish, but still has a bit left to it. Remaining bottles have a better fill, so may be better. This bottle was from the full case - had the importer stripe at the bottom of the bottle. B+/A-

still nice purple red; after opening bad odors in the nose which evaporated after decanting, later almonds and herbs; initially very dominant acids on the pallate, after decanting it's opening up and showing some fruit; after 2 hours nice bouquet and a pleasant wine; probably not a very nice bottle

Color a bit faded with amber on the rim. Expressive nose with cassis and black berries. Slightly forward on the palate still with black currant and emerges with a 45 second finish with a lingering chocolate and vanilla blend. Overall, slightly disjointed and lacking in balance (i.e. quite forward on the palate to begin with but turning very silky towards the finish), but yet a very nicely drinking wine. Approaching its peak in my view, max 5 years.

Cork soaked all the way to the edge. Fully mature, with good color and a fine entry and finish. Decent fruit for its age, with no hard edges, but also a bit short on the finish. Nothing too special, but a very nice mature Bordeaux. B+, but A- is possible for a bottle in slightly better condition. Either way - drink now.

Cork fell into bottle. This was classic 75 claret...in a bad way. Initially, quite hard and ungenerous. Sombre, plummy, cedar nose. With time, it softened a little but was never close to the bottles from my 40th.

Fill was into the neck and the cork was sound; opened about 1 hour prior to consumption. A ruby core turning to garnet at the rim. A rather subdued bouquet, with scents of cedary dark fruits, leather, earth and spice. Medium bodied, with a firm hand and structured backbone -- as expected from a '75 northern medoc -- yet with good focus and concentration; some astringency on the finish. I have had better bottles.

Absolutely stunning. Wonderful scarlet/crimson hue signalled some very classy fruit with lots of depth and lovely grip on the back end. It drank beautifully and was still at the youthful end of the fully mature spectrum with years ahead of it. If these bottles were representative, then this is a screaming buy for anyone who likes mature claret.

Notes not taken at time and had alongside the superb 1978 Las Cases. This wine was bought around the same time as the 1978 Las Cases and has laid alongside it undisturbed for the last 25 years so storage conditions have been identical. 1975 was a very tannic and backward vintage and many of the wines are lacking in charm with the fruit drying out long before the tannin remotely began to soften. The 1975 Las Cases though is not one of these. Tasting immediately after opening the tannins do still coat the teeth, but after three hours in a decanter it softened and rounded out although the tannin is still evident even after 34 years (will it ever go?). Alongside the 1978 one would describe it as austere, but that would be to unfairly criticise what is still a superb bottle of wine. There is noticeable bricking and the deeply coloured appearance is beginning to turn amber. The nose has distinctive minerals and earth plus all the usual lead pencil, leather and blackcurrant aromas. This wine probably hasn't been in it's prime drinking window that long, but it is now drinking well and still has the fruit to see it through the next 10-15 years at least. Yes, it's pretty hard and austere, but fascinating and impressive as well. Estimated maturity: 2000-2020+

A beautiful wine that is fully mature and drinking beautifully. It has great balance and is very elegant with soft tannins and just enough acidity to give it life. Typical aged LLC flavors with muted dark fruit, leather/tobacco, and cedar. Medium to short finish. Perhaps more restrained than other vintages, but still very good.

Ruby red with an orange rim. Noticeable aging but not as much as expected. Huge nose of cedar and lead pencil with a bit of fruit still hanging in there. Very smooth, tannins are fully integrated. Still some fruit on the palate but probably won't last another 5 years. Very nice 20+ second finish. Not what I was expecting after all I've read about the wines from this vintage. This is my first experience with an aged Bordeaux and I really enjoyed it. And not just b/c it was my birth year wine.

Not many people in attendance had tried this wine before. It’s a really nice wine, classic LLC and in just the right spot. Stefan Blicker turned me on to this, and, sourced from the right cellar, I think it’s a nice bargain in mature Bordeaux.

Garnet with orange at the rim. Beautiful nose of tobacco, lead pencil and black fruits. Taste was more of the same. Drinking well, the tannins seemed much resolved. There have been negative reports on this wine-not this bottle! This blew away the 1995 LLC drunk at the same dinner.

Dinner at Wilfred's (New York City): Pretty similar to my last taste and pretty much what I expected. A pretty LLC, not terribly generous, some bell pepper and tobacco on a somewhat tired frame. Lacking the opulence and oomph of other vintages, this would be nice on its own but is outshined in comparison. Still nice to have in the lineup.

I keep saying this wine still needs time. I'm trying again in a year and if it doesn't start opening up then I'm going along with the belief that many of the 75's will NEVER show fruit.

After opening, it had a metallic taste in the after taste and we weren't sure what that means. After 1 1/2 hours of "Audouzing" the metal taste wore off (thank god). Except the amber color, no signs of the age. Compared to the 75 Lalande we had the same night, this is very different. A very old style Bordeaux. Cassis, later some plum, tobacco and a hint of chocolate. Longer than the Lalande, but not as appealing fruit-wise. So glad I bought a bottle in perfect shape!

Traveling Methuselah's (The Murray's!): Very dark in color with a slight browning on the edges, the color hints of a younger wine. This showed a delicate nose of earthy minerals and a little cedar. The palate was also delicate with nice fruit and ample acidity and fully resolved tannins. A very nice wine with a long finish. I had no idea how/ wether to decant this bottle, so I opted to decant. Were I to do it again, I'd still decant but for 1 hour, not four. (Purchased at auction from Hart Davis Hart, I guess some good bottles CAN be found at auction.)

The Dutch Visit: Part 1; 3/31/2006-4/1/2006: Ruby red with garnet color showing at the edges. Decanted and tasted immediately, this showed an expressive nose of sweet cassis, Cuban cigar, smoke, rock dust, and a faint note of olive. In the mouth, the impression is of a medium weight, old style Bordeaux-no fleshiness or high alcohol, maybe even rustic in the view of some. The tannins are there as well, although the fruit seems enough to balance these at this stage. The dominant impression on the palate, however, is not the tannins, but a touch of sourness, which gives the wine a slightly hard finish. Certainly not the "soft landing" one hopes for in an aged Bordeaux. Perhaps not showing quite as well as an earlier bottle, still this is an excellent Leoville las Cases in an alternative (as distinct from 1982, 1986, 1990, and 1996), lacking the lushness and creamy mouthfeel of these extraordinary years.

Took a while to open up. Initially a really great nose of red fruit, leather and charcoal. With about an hour's air, the palate filled out with good tannic structure and a solid mid-palate. Excellent length and presense with tell-tale aged bordeaux flavors -- but this is not on the downside yet. Still vigorous.

Upon opening, the cork was wet throughout, so I was a bit worried... However, the nose sports a beautiful perfume, with plenty of rich, dark fruit, with lead pencil and old tobacco. The palate has strong acidity and plenty of fine, grippy tannin, and although there is some nice fruit to be found, it seems to lack a little oomph. Consumed over three hours, this was very enjoyable with braised duck legs.

Wine tasting at home with friends. Medium ruby red with just a hint of a brown edge. Nose of minerals and flint and dirt. The 75 vintage is a tough one. So many differing opinions on it. Some say give them time, others say they will never show their fruit. This Leoville was drinking nicely. Sweet fruit on the front, lost a little in the mid palate, with a rather sharp finish. Color was incredible though, nobody came within 10 years of the vintage. Give it time, let's see if it breaks out of this adolescent stage. Sure hope so as it has all the makings of a gorgeous wine.

Nice bottle. I tasted this once from a 3.0L last year, and the wine was round, plummy and pleasant. However, this bottle had FAR more life. Initially reticent, this quickly opened up to reveal a textbook nose of mineral, powdery black fruit and a hint of lead pencil. The palate was also clearly Las Cases, loaded with black fruit but generally more tannic and less rich than most other vintages. With more aeration, this really opened up to show more complex character, wafting cedar, mowed hay, a hint of soy. Lovely wine!

30th Birthday Dinner with Dad (Anvil Club, East Dundee): Decanted for about two hours before serving. The cork, while very soft, came out in one piece. Served in Riedel Sommelier Bordeaux glasses. The color on this was fantastic, bright ruby, just barely turning clear at the rim. There is no way just looking at this wine one would think it was a '75. Aromas of violets and fresh-cut flowers fill the glass. There's an earthiness to it as well. Silky palate, loaded with red fruit. There are no harsh tannins, the wine is well balanced and has a very nice finish.

A '70th' birthday dinner for Suzi and Eric (Seattle, WA, USA): This was my bottle, a 3.0L monster that we poured all the way around the restaurant. The cork was dark but still solid and had held a seal. The wine was textbook Las Cases with deep notes of pencil lead and cassis, just screaming of mature Cabernet. The palate was soft and well resolved, showing none of the hardness of the vintage. This actually seemed a bit too soft at first, but with time it picked up very nice palate weight in the glass.

Dark ruby, lightening to medium garnet at the edges. Aged aromas of leather, cigar-box, crushed berry, and earth. Impressive in the mouth, with complex and concentrated flavors of ripe dark fruits; finish went on and on. Still has a firm edge; suspect this beauty will easily last for another 15+ years. Bordeaux 1975 ten years after the harvest; tasted blind, only the vintage was known: a very deep, red colour. a very elegant, broad and flowery bouquet, very creamy and meaty in the midtaste; a very long and refined aftertaste with lots of very edible tannins.

The mysteries of older Bordeaux.

Aromas of red currants, tobacco, Indian spices, lavender and cedar. The tannins have completely integrated- one might not think this was a '75. The last bottle drank only a year ago seemed fully matured. Not so in this case. Black fruits, licorice, eucalyptus, lean and cool. Silky cool palate with integrated tannins. It isn’t quite ready. Still very fresh impression.

Bottle was stored well and had bottom neck fill. Popped and poured after standing up the bottle for a few days. Fair bit of sediment. Mostly tertiary notes at this point -- tobacco, pencil lead, cedar, earthy notes, etc. Not much fruit left. Elegant nose but very short finish. Time to drink up before these fade further.

Leoville Las Cases - Vertical Tasting (Le Sommelier, Copenhagen): Restrained nose, closed?, prickly black currant leaves and a little lead. Also a little chlorine.
Weak palate, closed?, that is slightly watery. Light black currant fruit with an okay acidity but very dry ending with some rust in the mid-palate.
However, still a long acidic aftertaste. Overall it seems unstructured/disjointed and frankly a little disappointing.

Drank 2-3 hours after decanting with steak - could not have been better! Amazing ...could have lasted more years. Old French rarely disappoints if stored well.

almost X-mas evening with Arjen: Popped and poured American style at the end of a evening with Cos 85+86, Talbot 1986 and Domaine de Chevalier 1966.

Cheers!

Excellent wine that stood the test of 30 years time. Absolutely no evidence of bricking or adverse affects of aging. Beautiful color with a very elegant nose and mouthfeel.

Leoville Las Cases in NYC (AOC Bedford): Some thick deep fruit, a little flabby. A little short. Nutty.

Brown at the edges, but still quite opaque; not much on the nose; on the palate a fair bit of fruit and tannin, but overall impression was rustic.

A triumph and a joy to experience!

decent nose, some almonds; some sweetness, also well structured acids, but overall some acerbity is present

Bordeaux 1975 ten years after the harvest; tasted blind, only the vintage was known: a very deep, red colour. a very elegant, broad and flowery bouquet, very creamy and meaty in the midtaste; a very long and refined aftertaste with lots of very edible tannins.
