Decanted 2 hours. This wine continues to drink very well with notes similar to my last tasting in 2015: vibrant dark fruit, cassis, damp earth with hint of spice and cedar. Tannins are silky and well integrated with long finish. Paired with venison osso buco over linguine.

Just lovely, perfectly mature, super intense and aromatic with beautiful ripe dark cherry and a lot of tertiary notes including truffle and balsamic. Very long.

Deep brick red on opening. After 2 hour decant, dark, opaque , and viscous. Earthy, herbaceous, subdued dark fruits, almost like unsweetened preserves. Paired beautifully with Australian Wagyu ribeye steaks and panzanella salad, but amazing with gnocchi in gorgonzola cream sauce. Evolved over a couple of hours. Simply a joy to savior this wine!

Brunello 2004 Horisontal (My House): Muted fruit and overall, it is very closed. A huge surprise when this was revealed as this normally is very exciting. The fruit is "clean" and dark but it doesn't really provide any other impressions. Disappointing and I really hope that the bottle was off or that it is in a weird phase.

Dark plum and cherry fruit mixed with oak, vanilla and dark chocolate. It is still a very young wine and in reality this needs at least 3-4 hours to really open up. The tannins feels very present and it would benefit from even more age. There is a lovely intensity and balance in the wine that makes it a real pleasure. 94p+

Simply amazing at this stage. Perfectly resolved tannins with incredible color and nose, and the longest finish. Hard to imagine it will improve and indeed I would be wary to hold much longer. Quite a bit better now than 1 yr ago 97

Absolutely magnificent, suttle, lovely balance. Tannins still remarkably present, I had expected them to be a bit softer by now. Aamzing nose and lovely palate: oak, earthy, tobacco, red fruit, a bit of spicyness. Lovely. Didn't decant, aired it for 1-2 hours in the bottle.

Decanted and drank over 4 hours. Amazing after 4 hrs. Some fine sediment. Nose: Beautiful 8/10. Palate: 9/10. Full body. Smooth, polished, elegant. Soft enveloping tannin. Great acidity. Finish: Long 9/10. Price: 7/10 ($110 in 2023). Enjoyment: 9/10. Drink now, just decant it for 3-4 hrs. Would buy again: Yes. Empty glass: intoxicating aroma of perfumed balsamic wood, grilled meat, violets, wet stone.

Cork Perfect - super fine silty sediment so decant and pour off carefully for very dark and clear color. decanted 2 hrs was perfect. Heavy mouthfeel, very well integrated tannin/fruit, nice lingering finish. Not sure I would hold too much longer but should drink well for at least a few more years. 94+

From a magnum - this was drank as the 3rd in a vertical of 04 Brunellos to celebrate my daughter's 18th birthday.
Brought to temp over 4 hours and opened up to sit in bottle for 3 hours - did not need decanting. Drank very smooth with a good amount of mouthfeel - this is quite special and probably the most liked of the 3 we opened. Darker in colour to the other two (an 04 Fuligni and an 04 Donatella Colombini), probably had the longest finish of the 3. Ripe fruit, muted on the nose with classic oak and a touch of smoke. Lovely. Drank over an hour or 2 and it got a little better - hard to see it lasting much longer than this.

Brunello Friday night at ESBK. Drank in Grassl 1855. Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose medium+ intensity, with aromas of VA, dark earth, dense sour red cherries, dark red cherries, balsamic, integrated toast oak. Developed. On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity dipping, medium+ to high alcohol (14.5%), integrated high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of dense ripe red cherries, dense red plums, balsamic, dark earth, bitter coffee bean. Long finish. Increasingly darker with air and slight soy sauce. Very good quality, but certainly for my palate at least, a drink up soon. Preferred it on pop and pour.

Dark red color. Ripe red fruit, leather and spices. Very well balanced and delicate nose. In the mouth balance between ripe tannins and acidity. Bouquet much more decisive than the nose. Delicate but very persistent aftertaste with a particular aroma which gave freshness (mint?).

similar to my last note, but even better - dark red, brick edge - nose of bright red cherries and darker red fruits - complex leather and Asian spice aromas - dense fruity mouth with mature tannins and low acidity - smooth 15-20 second finish - drinking beautifully now, but can easily last another 5-10 years - an interesting contrast with the 2004 Il Poggione Riserva Vigna Paganelli drank alongside: the Neri was much more intense and brooding, whereas the lighter Poggione had a prettier nose and more developed/balanced mouth - I'd drink Poggione and hold Neri

No contemporaneous notes. My friend Kevin graciously served this at his new home yesterday. As I recall, nice color; an aromatic, earthy nose; medium bodied, balanced, Rich, mature expression of Sangiovese. Really drinking beautifully now. (93-94).

This is quite an impressive wine. Big and complex nose with dark fruits and some spicy, chocolaty notes. Massive on the palate but with a good acidity and firm tannins that keeps it quite balanced. Suprisingly young, actually, and i think there is still some potential for improvement.

My last of these. Has the house style as always, which I love - licorice, with blue and black fruit. I've always found this vintage of this wine to be very powerful, perhaps not as much as the '01 (which has been a almost a brick, until now 20 years later), but this is now more approachable than before. In fact, it now gives the '06 a run for its money, which has always been my favorite vintage. Amazing wine, worth seeking out. It's showing better than ever.

This is drinking perfectly right now. I wouldn't wait much longer as the fruit is fading just a bit and the earth notes coming a bit forward. Color also slightly faded from garnet to a bit more brown. Drink now, tipping point coming.
Balsam, tobacco, red cherries. Rich luscious layers of red and black cherries that give way to a little chocolate and mocha on the finish. Well balanced. Tannins are starting to integrate and this seems to be hitting its drinking window, although it probably has a decade to go.

Very dark. Powerful palate, deep dark flavours, blueberry, blackberries, licorice, plums, ink, tar. Ripe and rich, with a lightly tobacco leaf earthy edge, classic Brunello. Powerful tannins, mouth coating and furry. Impressive structure, seems a decade of slow development ahead. Absolutely delicious.

Did not take detailed notes but in a perfect spot to drink now. I know Tenuta Nuova often gets flak for being modern but this is very sangiovese and not over the top at all.

My last of these. Similar to previous notes this is resonant and powerful. It has the house style - blue fruit with a sweet tobacco and Christmas cake, not much acidity in this vintage. I prefer the '06 which is more extended and balanced but for those who like power they may prefer this. Great wine.

This is my favorite brunello producer, and I've been to the winery in Tuscany. This is showing great at this stage of development and clearly has structure to go many more years really. This is very powerful, more so than most other vintages, and also has the classic house style which I find to be a licorice profile, anise, with a touch of cedar. This vintage is not earthy, not so dry and has a bit of acidity, but generally this is all about power. The '06 has more nuance and subtlety but this is more powerful. Fantastic wine. No hurry to drink this - this could go another ten years easily. 95+pts

Some signs of age in the color, but not too much. Nose has a lot of plum, and red berry. Great palate: lots of fruit still, and has aged really well. Good acidity. Lingers nicely. I’m not a regular Brunello drinker but this seems pretty great for the breed! Probably at its peak but 5+ years of good peak drinking left.
Day 1: Still going strong. Re-corked and waited on it to the following day. Waiting a day was a wise idea.
Day 2: This was darn impressive. It’s still quite fresh, still has the tannins, and has kept its acidity. I plan to wait until 2024 to drink my last bottle and I think it will still be going strong!

An excellent bottle this time. Vibrant, energetic, evolved red fruit, tobacco. Balanced acid and overall structure, going strong on the second day. Seeing a good deal of bottle variation with CdN; this one is at the better part of the range.

Last of 6 of a very confusing half case. After 2 bottles in which the fruit was really tired, this was a return to vibrancy, with great balance between really sweet cherries, cassis and prunes, powerful tannins and medium acidity. Held up well over 3 days and was a great complement to red sauce pasta with sausage and vegetables. Strong notes of cigar box, earth and smoke. Dark colored, medium to full bodied, strong legs. For the bottles without issues, this tasted like it was in the heart of its drinking window, probably not going to get better but drinking amazing well and likely to continue to do so similarly for at least another 5 years. Drank this as a PnP which worked well. Hard to know what advice to give on this other than if you get a bottle which isn't flawed, enjoy it. 94-95

5th of 6 bottles from an auction lot that came in like a lion and went out like a lamb. First 3 bottles were amazing, 96-97, but the fruit really fell out of bed with these last 2, particularly with exposure to air, although the tannins and acidity are holding up better. For a wine of this quality, disappointing. I note that this lot went through fraudsters Premiere Cru. Oddly, about a year ago, I had a '01, where the wine was oxidized, which was the opposite problem. Confirms my back of the envelope experience of European wines being more problem-prone than their US counterparts. Since several other tasters seem to think that the wine is early in its tasting window, I think that there was some problem with these particular bottles. Boo.

A big candied wine, coming off more developed and flabby than a year ago, though showing better balance with air. Coffee grinds, prune, caramel, wet wood. A bit over the top overall.

4th of 6 bottles purchased as an auction lot about 10 months ago at about $70/btl. Decanted for about 90 minutes with a 1 oz pour from the bottle. Some funk, fairly muted cherry and dried spices on the noses. Consistent tasting notes with more vibrant sweet cherry, smoke, and cigar box backed by crisp acidity and prominent but well-rounded tannins and just a bit of heat. Dark, medium to full-bodied, fairly light legs. The components are all large but are in good balance leading to a delicious, savory wine. Just had one glass on night one, but bottle left open for about 4 hours. Strong effort. 94+
On night 2, the wine seemed a bit washed out, and although it was better integrated, the fruit in particular seemed to fade. The wine seemed incrementally better on night 3, but this bottle and prior one seemed a couple of steps below the first 2 I had from the lot, which I would have scored 96-97. For my next bottle, I'm going to drink as a PnP and keep the bottle corked until consumed to see if it holds up better. A wine of this quality and age shouldn't be fading yet, but if you look at CT reviews of European wines compared to US wines at comparable price points, it's hard not have the sense that the former have greater bottle variation. Note that this score is an aggregate of the 4 bottles I've consumed rather than this one alone.

A lovely Brunello, but for my palate not a standout wine of this excellent vintage. Slightly raisiny and baked red fruit, some cherry flavors and prunes, a hint of age with first signs of oxidation and caramel flavors, quite a lot of spicy and roasted oak, crisp acidity, lovely silky tannins. Best with food. - 91 points

Popped and poured. This is a medium-red wine with virtually no sediment until the very end of the bottle. On the nose, I get cherry, brush, cranberry, and animal fur. In the mouth, this is smooth with sour-cherry aspects, leaving a finish that is sweet yet marked by tart red berries. Overall, this is a wine that is clearly Tuscan, but at the same time it is more modern in style and rendered without much emotion. I know the northern terroir is not the best in BdM, but could more be done with this? That may be akin to a lollipop question that ultimately has no answer. Such is life. 91 points.

The colors were clear crimson red with just a slight touch of browning and moderate to fast legs. The nose had some interesting notes with cinnamon clove, orange rind and strawberry mash. The palate was slightly harsh up front with strawberry rhubarb, orange citrus, a touch of prune and aged tobacco. On the finish the acids had receded some possessed drying tannins leather and tobacco. Became more accessible after an hour of breathing. Still good and can go on a while longer as I have one bottle left to try at the 20 year mark.

A big wine. Aromatic sangio nose of prune, coffee, earth, candied cherry, dark fruit. Lots of acid, full bodied, still tight and slightly tannic wine; like many late blooming '04s, needs time still to fully integrate.

In a horizontal tasting of 2004 we had four great wines:
2004 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Bolgheri (95 p): Nose: Truly fine and aromatic with olive oil, flower field, lavender, bell pepper jam (!), gravel and a bit of dark currants. Palate: Full-bodied and pleasantly tannic with jam-ripe luscious dark fruits.
2004 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova (93 p): Nose: A bit dry and fine with a dry-flower-y bouquet, lavender, gravel, sedar tree, white pepper, overripe cranberry and a bit of smoke and autumn earth. Palate: Semi-fullbodied, ripe, slightly dry and long with round tannins and lively acidity.
2004 Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne (93 p): Nose: Fine and aromatic with jam-like fruit, cherry and a bit of leather and liquorice. Palate: Semi-fullbodied and semi-tannic with ripe and luscious dark fruit.
2004 Château Mouton Rothschild (91 p): A disappointment for a 1er cru. Nose: Fine with notes of luscious fruit, mocha and chocolate and a little bit of farm stable. Palate (did not reach the levels of the truly fine nose): mid-fullbodied, pleasantly round tannins, drier (fruit) than Ornellaia, with mature Bordeaux-style leather.

The 6th Quinquennial Wine and Food Extravaganza (New Jersey, USA): Purchased and stored in my cellar since release. Double decanted around 1pm and served 9 bottles at the event this evening around 8pm. One bottle of the 10 intended to be served was badly corked the others seemed pristine. These definitely needed the air and were very expressive when served, more so than when tasted at decanting. The wine was a dark garnet color with a very expressive nose dominated by chocolate (which I love) especially early on. The nose also had prune, cherry and sous-bois. The wine was big in tannin and acidity but calmed down with the breathing. Palate was dense and rich with black raspberry, earth, prunes and plum along with the chocolate with a very long finish. Delicious with the beef and venison tartar as well as the pork belly skewers.

Gave this about 30 minutes in glass and it was open for business. Classic brunello profile of tobacco, leather, and spice. Beautiful tension, dry, grippy tannins. Lovely with braised short ribs. Did not change that much over next 90 minutes. Held up nicely on day 2 and maybe showed some additional old world nuances.

Spectacular and everything you want aged Brunello to be. Showed class from the first pour. Wonderful freshness belying it’s age. Great dark fruits, great depth and savouriness - meat, tar, olive, herbs. Everything in wonderful balance. Powerful but everything firmly structured. The acid/tannin still very present and so many years left in it. (Wine was purchased from Montalcino village enoteca close to release date and meticulously stored)

1 of 3. Purchased and stored on release. Upon opening, this is a stewed pruney, musty mess. Giving it lots of air to see if it will blow off. With an hour of air, the mustiness blows off, but the wine still has a slight note of being maderized. Not Rated! Hope the other bottles are better!
Initially funky and musty and after one hour this blew off and showed the elegance of this wine. Candied cherries , soft tannins , medium to full bodied. Leather and dark chocolate

Lovely and drinkable but still very young. Needs about 30-60 min of decanting to really open up. It still has lots of harsh tannins and needs a lot longer in bottle to improve but it is still very nice to drink with food. Dark blackberry fruit with a lot of acidity dominates the wine but the fruit is not over the top and has a touch of elegance to it. Lovely bottle!

Star of the evening, amazingly young and virile fruit with endless layers. Astonishing journey in the glass over 4-5 hours. Super complex nose with wet strawberries, cherries, violet, raspberry, blueberry, pines, moss, forest floor, lavender, cedar, tobacco, smoke, new leather, white pepper, resin and blood orange. Perfectly mature, unfiltered and velvety mouthfeel with powerful but silky tannins. Exclusive elegance, soft and delicate fruit, citrus tea, coffee, strawberries. At peak of it's powers, 95p

dark red, brick edge - intriguing nose of bright red cherries and undertones of dark red fruit - some complex leathery smells, but not that compelling - tannins predominated in the mouth, but softened with food (perfect match with grilled veal chops) - medium length smooth finish - drinking very nicely now, but hard to tell whether enough fruit will be left by the time the tannins fully resolve - probably not worth the risk as it's plenty enjoyable right now

I think this needed more time. Only opened 30 minutes before dinner, poured through venturi, but tasted closed up and not very special. Even 3 hours later it didn't impress, and came across as rather dry. I'm hoping it would have been better with a lot more time to open up.

Excellent well-aged (but certainly not over the hill) Brunello. Shows a rustic nose of oak, red fruits and leather. On the palate, it's true to its type with rustic/aged red fruits, good acidity, fine tannins and a very satisfying finish. smooths out somewhat with time in the glass/decanter. If properly cellared, it can go for a few more years easily. Very nice.

EXCELLENT!

A strong candidate for wine of the night at a tasting of Brunellos ranging from 1989 to 2007. Deep dark color with no brick edge. Beautifully aromatic centered on black cherry. Enters the mouth showing great concentration, very rich fruit of plum, cherry, and blackberry, plus integrated bright acid, firm drying tannin, and caressing and juicy texture, all of which flow through a nearly endless finish. Superbly poised between the delicious fruit of younger wines and the rounded and integrated flavors of older ones. Will readily improve through another decade of aging.

Definitely a well made wine with unending structure and old world minerality. Nose is plums, smoke and tobacco - it takes several hours of decant to unwind and become a smoother, longer version of its premature self when initially opened. A pretty if wine for brunello but maybe a little unrefined at the moment.

I really like this wine, its a bit wild and dangerous. It is deep, loaded with black fruits and thread with a strand of licorice. There's plenty of volatility but I like the way it gives the wine lift and that little tangy burst of Balsamic. It has black earth and fungus things going on and immense tannins just behind the fruit.

Sadly this came across a bit cooked. The nose still have some elegance and it was drinkable and good, but it was just overripe to a touch baked. Had over a couple nights without much change.
This was purchased at the cellar door and though not perfectly stored (~65F, modest fluctuation) for 5+ years, other bottles under the same conditions have not suffered for it. Especially for a wine that should have a long life, I'm not sure what happened here.

This wine is Burgundian in style with a wonderful nose of the teroir. Didn't need to decant. In fact it got a little more of that big fruit feel after a few hours.
Someone commented it is oaky. Not a trace of oak here and I am very sensitive to oak.
I'm a big fan of Casanova di Neri and this wine did not disappoint. Aerated about 90 minutes, notes of lush dark fruit, earth, currant with nice silky tannins and long finish. I like the 1997 and 2001 a bit more but this wine is still in its youth and delightful.

This needed a good 2 hours in the decanter to show well. Dark fruits and spice with nice acidity. The tannins are present adding to the 30 second finish. As the night went on this improved and opened to reveal a softer personality. Was great with organic pasta with pancetta/basil tomato sauce, pan seared garlic shrimp and fiddleheads.

Very aromatic upon opening. Nose of wood and spice. Took a good two hours to open. Serving temperature really changed the taste on this wine; keep it chilled to 60 to 64.

De mieux en mieux, encore plus velouté que mes autres. Beau nez sur les cerises et les épices. En bouche, suave et gouleyant, anis, prunes et cerises noires, tannins assez fins et finales longue.

Spectacular wine. First night had after a private investor's reserve Harlan and Harlan Maiden with a few friends and this help up in the same weight class. Extremely smooth and balanced with a stronger fruit profile than most Brunellos on night one, on night two showed more tobacco and woodsmoke along with the fruit; really nice.

Served blind at an event with wine-savvy friends, and it was very well received. A rustic nose of oak, red fruits and leather. On the palate, it's true to its lineage, with aged red fruits, fine tannins and a satisfying finish.

Good but a bit short on acidity. Body was full and had reasonable oak on it which i wasn't expecting. Stewed fruit/prunes on the palate. More acidity and brightness would have helped in my enjoyment I think.

Purchased in Sienna. One of the better Brunellos we had in the region. Aroma of leather and tobacco and plum. Don't recommend decanting and there was no sediment and it is a delicate wine. Pair with red sauce italian food or lighter meat with mushroom sauce.

Lunch with Chris and Joey; Non-Blind (Bin 75): Very advanced for this age, showed thicker texture and more modern slant but the soy and fennel on the nose and browning color made this difficult to enjoy to its fullest, palate was much better than the nose.

It is just lovely. I decanted it for just 1/2 hour or so, but that made quite a difference. It is balanced and bold. Subtle with a lovely finish. Lots of fruit and just a fabulous Brunello.

Always one of my favorite producers. I love the licorice notes from this wine. This is still tightly wound and needs some decanting before showing at its best. Big concentration, not so much floral notes that I sometimes get with other Brunello styles. This is pretty modern. Probably better paired with food vs. by itself. I still prefer '06 but this may be close - feels bigger than '06 but less complex.

This wine is in a very sweet spot right now. Right before age 10, it is completely approachable and is drinking beautifully. Silky tannins, dark fruit, chocolate, and a 30+ second finish. Giacomo Neri is one of the most consistent producers in Montalcino.

Full, tons of cherry, rich tannins. Basically a wine with some fullness but one without enough sophistication to be top notch. A bit of plum there too. I like it, but will not be rushing to my other bottles for a couple of years. Drink in 2016.

San Diego WineSpectator.com Offline, 11/9/2013 (Nine-Ten Restaurant, La Jolla, California): Decanted 30 minutes before tasting. Clear dark garnet. Lovely bouquet of bright fresh red cherries, leather, earth, tar, sweet oak. Firm chalky mouth-coating tannins, herbal finish. Bouquet better than palate. Excellent now, probably better in a few years. Group's THIRD PLACE tonight.

Now this is Brunello! This has great texture, layered and lush. Classic sour cherry fruit, leather, earthiness, and an herbal hint as well. Will obviously be better with time but it's wonderful right now. Bravo!

Monthly Tasting Group HWS #082; Sangiovese (By WW): In the bouquet black forest fruits, earth, metal and some green impressions. On the palate ripe and sweet dark berries, vanilla, chocolate and figs. A good touch of sweetness, but also good acidity, firm acidity and firm bitterness. Overall a beautiful and classical wine with still a good future. Around 2018+?

Lacks the elegance with which I associate Brunello in my mind but still a profound wine and with time in hand. Deep ruby color with an intense nose which offers chocolate, coffee, licorice, leather and hints of tar. Plush texture, almost full bodied but fluid due to high acidity. Tannins are ripe and round. High concentration of sweet and ripe fruit together with the typical Brunello flavors.

A good but not great Brunello. Opened to aerate about an hour before starting to drink it. A bit muted initially it showed some nice red fruit and floral nose but was missing that rustic earthiness I enjoy in a BdM. After two plus hours it earned a 90 score.

Luxurious, complex and deep bouquet with loads of black forest fruits and licorice. On the palate the same. Ripe dark forest fruits, a beautiful balance between sweetness and acidity and round and soft, but also firm tannin. A really great wine in its early maturity stage now and a future of at least another 5+ years.

Intense dark ruby core with crimson hue and an amazing youthful look. Decanted for 1+hour, expressive nose of dark fruits, dark cherry, exotic spice, hints of earth and florest floor. Fresh and structured on palate, exhibits dark cherry, plum, slight hints of sweetness and still promienet Oak. Medium bodied, elegant, it has good substance flowing through mid-palate to the long aftertaste with firm grippy tannins. This is the Brunello I'm expecting, enjoyable at the moment with long life ahead. (93-94)

Decanted for 1+ hours and enjoyed over 4 hours. It was still pretty tasty upon opening but I enjoyed it the most after 2 hours in the decanter. It showed rich notes of dark berries, spices, oak and licorice and was full flavored without being heavy. Nice tannin and acidity. I see how people say its in a modern style but it is still true to Brunello and sangio.

Genialer Wein!

2.5 hr decant, a bit more astringent than what I was hoping for. Still quite tasty, wish it was a bit more velvety on the finish. Solid but not my favorite 04.

Dark black red blood color and nearly opaque and some hints of tawny at the edge. The smells are wet stones, spice, espresso, currants, floral notes, and crushed blackberry. The tastes are currants, sweet tobacco, blackberry, tea, dark chocolate, sweet spices, espresso, cedar, leather, and earthy flavors. This wine has an elegance with a depth of flavors that changes in the glass from one moment to the next. The tannins are still prominent but fine and powdery. The body is not heavy at all and this wine has nice acidity and a nice, lengthy finish.

The color is dense garnet and nearly opaque with some bricking. The smells are complex and include cigar, tea, smoke, leather, bacon, and currants. The tastes are spice, cedar, currant, olive, pepper, bacon, and vanillin. The body is weighty but not heavy, the finish is long and complex, and the tannins are like satin. This would be amazing with steak or lamb.

At first quite tannic and unyielding, virtually the same as two years ago. One to hide away for a few more years. The '06 is more accessibe now, strangely enough. Yet, after about three hours it really opened up to reveal something special and worthy of attention and has the same licorice tones I get from the '06; very deep, powerful with finesse. Better on the 2nd day after vacume seal.

A modern expression of Brunello. Dark ruby. Expressive nose of black cherry, espresso, herbs, earthy minerality and licorice. As the wine stayed in the glass, a tertiary element indicating evolution started to appear. Med-full bodied with firm but juicy tannins, rich and opulent fruit and med+ acidity. Very long aftertaste. I cannot predict how this will evolve, since the nose shows more maturity than the palate. Very enjoyable at this stage, so do not hesitate to start drinking your stock.

I have to agree with the Canadian tasters here - this just doesn't live up to the hype. cherry, tannin and sour. Wasn't bad, just not what you would expect and the tannins are overpowering. I had tasted this with winemaker on release and it was much better. Have 5 more of these so a bit nervous, maybe I will sell some.

Popped and poured one night, and finished the remainder the following night. Didn't notice a lot of change on the second night. Aroma of strawberry and plum, along with some tobacco and spice. Taste has strawberry, and a bit of tartness on the mid-palate. Finished with some relatively drying tannin. I'll see how my other bottle shows when I drink it years down the road.

Tasting on a Wednesday? Wine not?! (Dave's House): Served blind, alongside another blind. Consumed over approximately 1 hour. It's official; this wine sucks. 6 bottles now, none of them even close to what this is supposed to be. Not cooked, not corked, not flawed, just boring. As it turns out, the other blind was the same wine, only it was heavily oxidized, as it was the same bottle opened in March.

Weekday KW Tasting (Dave's House): Rough way to end Dave's bad string of these. Either a bad batch, a troubled bottling or an extremely awkward phase for this wine. Didn't take much in the way of notes, but this time it was served blind. Was thinking northern italian with dark cherry fruit, and a firm tannic palate with a nice bit of sour acidity. Overall pleasant, but not even close to what you'd expect from this bottle.

Opened for 45min then poured. Served in Riedel Vinum Bordeaux stems. 64F. Color clear deep purple garnet, nose slight barnyard, wet leaves, vanilla, tobacco, plums and black cherry. Very well balanced and structured. Medium plus acid. This wine still very youthful. This wine could go another 10 or more years. Extraordinary wine

This wine really amazing! Only need about 15-20 mins breathing, it would already show medium complexity and rich fruit. No tannis and very smooth, and medium length. Wish that I have a few more bottles of this wine.

(Popped and Poured) Initially when popped this had a nose of banana, but that receded over time and the wine improved. Still tannic with a good seam of acidity. Dark cherry fruit and savoury herbs emerged with time. Today this wine is at most 92 points. It's certainly not drinking quite as well as hoped, but it might improve. Our group has been popping these lately and has been having some very tough luck with them. Thanks Dave for opening this!

More Weeknight Tasting in KW (Dave's House): I certainly admire Dave's determination. Despite several awful showings from this bottle, he is dead set on having me experience on classic bottle of this. Unfortunately for him, that was not tonight. This is the best bottle that I've had, but it does not come close to the group's previous experience with an exceptional bottle. On the nose, this showed dark cherries, dark fruits, chocolate, iron, slight florals, dried herbs, and a bit of menthol. On the palate, dark fruits, bitter chocolate, blood and herbs. Reasonable balance, with moderate tannin and acidity. Finish is medium length. Certainly a decent wine, but not a strong showing based on expectations.

I probably would have guessed bordeaux if I tasted this blind. I will say it wasn't very brunello-like, definately more hedonistic. While I wanted to drop it some points for not tasting like it "shoud" it was still amazing.

This is just such an up and down bottle...... This had all of the flavour characteristics of prior bottles but just no where near the layers and length.....I'm worried about this as we had 3 bottles in the span of 24 hours....1 was corked, and 2 were 90pts, no more.

DoktaP, JoeG and Basecadet Visit KW (Dave's House): Served blind, decanted quickly for sediment. On the nose, candied cherries, florals, tar, spice and iron, but still some slight mustiness. Mirrored on the palate, and seemingly a bit disjointed right now. Acidity is a bit out of whack and there is a ton of drying tannin. There are some nice elements to this wine, but I still felt this was ever so slightly corked. After my experiences with the 2004 and 2006, I will never purchase this producer. Every single bottle I've had has been a relative disaster.

A Few Wines on a Thursday (Dave's House): Decanted for approximately 15 minutes prior to serving. Deep garnet in colour, with the slightest bricking at the rim of the glass. The nose offered up scents of candied cherries, florals, spice, leather, smoked meats and iron. With an hour or two of air, the oak really started to rear its ugly head; vanilla and overt sweet wood notes. On the palate, cherries, blood, herbs and spices. Fairly heavy tannin and acidity on this wine still and the finish was moderate. It seemed like this had all the elements to be really outstanding, as this had a number of notes that I like, but on this night, it just seemed rather simplistic and boring. A shame, as this is my second rather poor (relative to expectations) experience with this wine.

I guess I'm learning the hard way about Brunello. Opened this one and it was still very tight, even after two hours decant. Great bouquet, great flavors, but out of balance with big tannins. (Doris, too much tannin. Did not enjoy). I look forward to trying again in a year.

The color is dense and inky black but ruby at the rim with a slight orange tinge. The aromatics were powerful and I was able to smell the wine as it sat in the glass from a few feet away. Wow does this smell good! Coffee, tarry smells, cinnamon, olive, and blackberries. I taste soy, dark chocolate, black olive, and briary dark fruit. The acidity is nice and combined with the tannins, which are dry and velvety, are both indicators this wine has many good years ahead of it (Giacomo Neri is the winemaker). The finish is long and this begs for lamb or steak

Tasting at Chateau Gallo (Chateau Gallo): The seventh blind of the afternoon, supplied by Patrick and Dave as a replacement to the previously flawed La Chapelle. I have a few of these in the cellar but won't touch them for a few more years. I tried this wine in Montalcino last year and loved it. I'll note provide tasting notes until I try it again, but wanted to share with the Cellar Tracker community a general comment about Brunellos (that I assume most of you know).
In the Montalcino tasting rooms, they pour wines opened the day before. Two or three hours simply isn't enough time for most of these wines to open. If I plan to drink Brunello for dinner, I open it first thing in the morning. And I NEVER order it in a restaurant! Even forceful decanting and repeated venturi-ing will not prepare most of these wines for optimal drinking.
Just 2 cents from a long time Brunello fan and collector!

BYO (Lyng): Hard as nails at the moment even with 5 hours of decanting. It did really not show very well. The fruit was not present but the backbone was however most impressive. But, it did seem more like a dry Nebbiolo style wine than a Brunello. Disappointed but it does seems like the 04's are really closed at the moment.

Fantastic young wine. The nose was amazing with dark fruit and spices that kept me comming back again and again. The palate was deep with smooth tannins and some acid. Let breathe for 4 hors before bringing to Portovino in Montreal. This wine was far more impressive than the 2005 I tasted at Gambero Rosso event two weeks ago. Can't wait to try the 2006, I hear it's even better. 95 ponts.
This is a big modern style brunello..Dark red in the glass..Nose: Fresh dark fruit, earth tones, hint of tar and expresso..Palate: Concentrated but surely not over the top..Beautiful fresh dark fruit, floral, mushrooms with a touch of toasty oak..I did get a touch of heat on the finish..The mouthfeel was silky and elegant.A very well made brunello with a long life ahead of it...Cheers!!

Still tight as of tasting, but 30 minutes of decanting can easily fix it. Notes of red currants, leather, tobacco, raspberry, strawberry compote, and toasty oak. Light body with ripe red and black fruit nuances that carry dried oregano and thyme flavors. This will pair well with pizza margherita, napolitano or any tomato-based dish. Drink now until 2020.

Sangiovese from Tuscany: This seemed closed on the nose as well as palate. Did not fair well in the company of Flaccianello and Castelgiocondo Riserva. No matter how much whirlingI did, it was difficult to get much out. Palate was anyhow balanced. Strong tannins but to me these were anyhow not green although greened than other wines of the night. Will the fruit last the dissolution of the tannins? 93 but I might be generous now.

Decanted for 2 hours. Clear cherry red with a slightly brown rim, concentrated. On the nose the impression was modern with dark fruit, strong oak and floral notes. Medium bodied on the palate with dusty pronounced oak, enough fruit to back it up, earth and a lovely acidic finish. Aftertaste was quite long but hard to grasp. Drinkable now but will definitely evolve. 92+

8/10 - A nice wine which was a little shy on the nose... dark fruits, some chocolate, floral notes and hints of alcohol. On the palate, the alcohol remained present and distracted what was otherwise a nice mix of dark red fruits, a little bit of blueberry, bitter chocolate, flowers and minerals. Tannins were a bit on the heavy side but are well integrated and smooth. This wine feels just a tad disjointed and could do with a greater showing on the fruity goodness but think this should come with time.

En flott Brunello med ett langt liv foran seg. Er myk i anslaget, men har alikevel stram syre og mye tannin. Flott frukt og veldig bra lengde. Ingen skam å drikke denne nå, men vil nok utviklet mer kompleksitet med årene...

Expressive nose. Dark fruits on the palate, a bit earthy and mildly acidic (though not terribly so for a young Italian wine - this is certainly made in a more modern style). Very smooth finish and, to me, a food-friendly wine. I enjoyed this with rack of lamb and vegetables. Delicious combination.

lovely big earthy wine. Can't tell if it is a little bit bretty, tiny bit corked, or just tastes like dry forest floor, but a rich, cherry/funky softly (but big-ly) tannic bottle. The higher ratings below are not unreasonable.

This is a huge wine needing a lot more time to show it's stuff. Huge concentration, almost black; more like expresso than wine ;-) It's a shame to drink it now as this will really develop nicely over time. Strangely, despite all of the various vintages I've had of this, I still have fondest memories of the '99 which had a unique personality.

San Antonio Wine Geeks - Random Bottles (Ilsong Garden Korean BBQ, San Antonio): My WOTN. I thought this would be young and closed, but after a good hour decant, I was quite wrong. Fantastic nose of licorice and salty sea air with a floral delicacy. The palate is all about balance with fine plush but prominent tannins on the backend, great acidity, and ripe concentrated cherry fruit flavors. Really hangs on the palate with a lengthy refreshing finish, with sweet fine tannins. Really impressive, fantastic balance and delicacy, but powerful ripe fruit as well. Great now, but should only improve over the next 10-15yrs.

Chianti (Waterford Wine Co., Milwaukee): darkest and blackest profile of the day. black top. cocoa. and more oak. medium acid. most pronounced oak treatment of the tasting thus far. good floral attack on the palate through all that wood. still in the dark cherry fruit realm, but loads more oak treatment. as that oak settles down, it should harmonize better with the more subtle acidity.

More chocolately, more wood smoke or something that I would attribute to barrel. Not in a bad way, just present. A kind of coco liquor developing to a touch for me. Palate is heavy with fruit, but certainly not sloppy. In fact, the opposite -- assertive tannin structure compare to the Boscarelli. Tied up brunello finish right now. And lingering.

Brunello 2004 Tasting (HSH): A lovely intense and deep nose with plenty of dark cherries, some bonfire and a hint of vanilla. Also had a strange hint of lemon which suited the nose nicely. Beaufitul nose! Very full body with a lot of dark cherry and a wall of tannin with a long and very nice acidic aftertaste. Amazing intensity on the palate and an impressive balance despite the very huge body of flavours. An insane wine with a huge potential!! To me, one of the big wines of the vintage.

Quick taste at the end of another big tasting, no decanting. Very dark, a touch of orange at the rim, very nice. Rather closed yet, but promising nose of undergrowth, truffels and warm dark berries underneath. Juicy, fiery, intense palate, very young, but interesting as well. Very good length.

Beautiful Brunello, drinking surprisingly well, decanted for 1.5 hours, consumed over next 2 hrs. Young, but with nice silky tannin, gorgeous fruit, black cherry, but not over-ripe or jammy. Lovely intense nose, some floral notes. Full body, long finish, very drying and tannic on the finish but somehow not unpleasant, #2 WINE OF THE NIGHT, in blind brunello tasting, went extremely well with the veal parmesan, will buy more. A little new world styled but really well done. Will improve with time.

Garnet to pink with a medium clear rim. Big nose of black currant, black cherry, leather, clove, and thyme. Silky with strong grape and wood tannins. Good acidity lines flavors of more black fruit, tobacco, with hints of smoked strawberry. A great, mouth-drying 40 second finish. 93+.
I'm excited to see where this young Brunello ages as the new oak integrates with the powerful, silky, dark fruit.

I first tasted it at the winery on 15/5/09. But I lost my notes...... I do remember that the nose was good, nothing extraordinary but the palate was dense and had lots of structure. This winery visit was together with the famous Longboarder. Who had a very special encounter with this wine previously. It just wasn't as special as the stories where indicating...... Now, before putting some bottles into 'long term storage, stowed deeply away in the cellar' kind of mode, I HAD to check a bottle:-)
I decided to take my time and consumed the bottle over a period of 3 days. Opened the bottle and left it there. Now, on the third day it finally came to something that I would rate almost 'extraordinary':
Deep ruby colour. Explosive aromas of fresh black fruit, berries and lots of floral tones, with hints of boxwood and leather. Indeed a very expressive nose. Following trough on the palate with lots of fresh fruit, refined and layered tannins and some serious fresh acidity. Rounded off by a long finish.
On the first two days it was lacking the explosiveness on the nose, and was leaner on the mid palate. The long finish was there from day one. It clearly needed 2-3 days to come around. I guess this one also needs some more time in the bottle to settle down! Drink 2014 - 2020. It would be a nice experiment to see what happens if you decant this wine. But I promised myself that I will never do that again with a Brunello. And I don't want to open another bottle of this one for the next 5 years.

This wine was decanted and poured. It started out in a forward, opulent style with blueberries, cigar ash, spice, tar and black cherry notes on the bouquet; however, after about 20 minutes the aromatics shifted to a more stern, alcohol dominated profile. Additional airing, caused another shift in the aromatics and the wine again reverted to a forward, opulent profile. The transition from forward to stern and back continued throughout the consumption of the bottle. The color is dark ruby to almost black and is tending toward the saturated side for a Brunello. The palate echoes the theme of the bouquet showing both a forward, plush and textured personality and stern, unyielding traits. There is a lot of concentration to this wine. It will require a couple years of bottle age to round out the stern, unyielding stages and has the concentration and raw ingredients to show as well as a recently tasted 2004 Uccelliera.

Tasted tonight withg three buddies. This is still WAYYYY too young! It's a monster presently! Theres no if's,and's or but's with this wine...it's in your face!!! The acidity is over the board and the fruit takes the back seat. This wine is unidimensionnal presently, should have been opened in 5 years...at least! Not showing well at all presently!!! Too bad because this has the elements to age in beauty, lets see in 5 years...at leats!!!

Tasted at winery with wine maker during Tuscan trip. Outstanding example of a Brunello. Balance is the key. You can enjoy now vs. the 2001 which requires 5 more years . Wine maker believes this is better than WS #1 in 2001.

The Tenuta Nuova is a bit more austere than expected. It will need time to come around. It should drink well from 2014 and until 2025, when the dry tannins get to mellow down a bit. It is too young to rate. Maybe in the 91-93 range -- maybe better. We will only know for sure in a few years. (But its backbone is rather impressive and so the potential for a blockbuster is there.) At this stage the best part is the finish, that goes on forever with dark and complex aromatics. Let's hope that the nose becomes just as complex in 5-6 years.

Followed over 0-7 hours: 0h: Right after opening the wine displayes a very powerful nose, mostly cherries and only a little oak/vanilla. A little bit of sewer/medicinal tones. The mouth is extremely tight and almost completely closed. There is however some cherry flavours but the tannins are also extremely harsh and the length is very long.
3,5h: Smells of cherries and some minerality. A prickly acidity is present but also more fruit and a minor hint of coffee. The mouth has increased the fruit power and a little darker fruit than before. Hints of coffee, vanilla, chocolate but it seems very integrated in the wine and are not at all over done or even over powering. An insanely bright acidity runs through the palate but it again seems to be well integrated in the overall flavour profile. This vintage seems to be a lot more elegant than previous years, i.e. 2001.
7h: The nose is like before but the taste is huge. Sweet cherries, a little oaky tones and a HUGE acidity that carries through the very long length of the wine. There are some green herbal spices in the aftertaste and also some black pepper. An almost brutal acidity which is very appealing. Kept a sample closed up and in the fridge and after about 30 hours after opening the wine it was still amazing!! Again, the acidity is bright and clean but the fruit did become a lot darker, almost towards dark plums. Again, even after such a long time the oak did not seem to be overpowering the wine at all!!
In general a monster wine that has been buildt to last for a very long time. A great pleasure to enjoy!

Decanted 2 hours. This wine continues to drink very well with notes similar to my last tasting in 2015: vibrant dark fruit, cassis, damp earth with hint of spice and cedar. Tannins are silky and well integrated with long finish. Paired with venison osso buco over linguine.

The fruit is "clean" and dark but it doesn't really provide any other impressions. Disappointing and I really hope that the bottle was off or that it is in a weird phase.

It is still a very young wine and in reality this needs at least 3-4 hours to really open up. The tannins feels very present and it would benefit from even more age.
There is a lovely intensity and balance in the wine that makes it a real pleasure. 94p+

Preferred it on pop and pour.

similar to my last note, but even better - dark red, brick edge - nose of bright red cherries and darker red fruits - complex leather and Asian spice aromas - dense fruity mouth with mature tannins and low acidity - smooth 15-20 second finish - drinking beautifully now, but can easily last another 5-10 years - an interesting contrast with the 2004 Il Poggione Riserva Vigna Paganelli drank alongside: the Neri was much more intense and brooding, whereas the lighter Poggione had a prettier nose and more developed/balanced mouth - I'd drink Poggione and hold Neri

Boo.

It still has lots of harsh tannins and needs a lot longer in bottle to improve but it is still very nice to drink with food.
Dark blackberry fruit with a lot of acidity dominates the wine but the fruit is not over the top and has a touch of elegance to it. Lovely bottle!

dark red, brick edge - intriguing nose of bright red cherries and undertones of dark red fruit - some complex leathery smells, but not that compelling - tannins predominated in the mouth, but softened with food (perfect match with grilled veal chops) - medium length smooth finish - drinking very nicely now, but hard to tell whether enough fruit will be left by the time the tannins fully resolve - probably not worth the risk as it's plenty enjoyable right now

Very nice.

High concentration
of sweet and ripe fruit together with the typical Brunello flavors.

The tastes are spice, cedar, currant, olive, pepper, bacon, and vanillin. The body is weighty but not heavy, the finish is long and complex, and the tannins are like satin.

I had tasted this with winemaker on release and it was much better. Have 5 more of these so a bit nervous, maybe I will sell some.

It's official; this wine sucks. 6 bottles now, none of them even close to what this is supposed to be. Not cooked, not corked, not flawed, just boring. Overall pleasant, but not even close to what you'd expect from this bottle.

Just 2 cents from a long time Brunello fan and collector!

big and very dark; too young with primary dark fruit, tar, coffee and tannins; should have decanted both for the sediment and the young age;hold for at least 2 yrs; score is on potential as not particularly enjoyable right now, even with bbq steak

Opened and poured through the Vinturi-sweet plum giving way to cherry fruits and dashes of vanilla. Eminently drinkable now, but is certain to evolve for many years, with its gustatory combination qualitatively improving across time.

Great balance. Took time to open up. First showed only musty library and smoke, later cherry and mushroom. The tannins are full and mouth filling. Eventually, dark red fruit was predominant.

Black. A bit reductive on the nose, with black cherry & floral aspects. Wood infused black cherry with big, oak inspired tannins. I'm a bit worried about the reductive aspect in terms of aging.

Decanted for one hour. This wine is incredibly balanced. Nice, soft tannin, extremely long finish. A fantastic example of what a Brunello should be.

Very expressive wine, with deep berry notes mixed with moderate acidity and lots of tannins right now. Very young, but shows excellent potential. Wait. The sample I had was decanted and had been open for 6 hours.

Followed over 0-7 hours:
0h: Right after opening the wine displayes a very powerful nose, mostly cherries and only a little oak/vanilla.
