Introduction
1982 Bordeaux - a two day event in Bremen, Germany with bottles from a perfect cellar.
Flight 1 - First Evening, Aperitif (1 note)
White
1997 Franz Hirtzberger Riesling Smaragd Singerriedel
92 points
Very mineral and stony, fine acidity, citrus, lemon zest. Very youthful.
Flight 2 - First Evening, Table Wine (2 notes)
Red
1982 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Volcanic Hill
94 points
From imperial. Here goes one of five imperials bottled in this vintage ... Initially thought this was corked or flawed, but as it opened up, this gave way to all sorts of rustic aromas, intertwined with fruit and old tannins. Very very interesting and a great but not easy wine.
Flight 3 - First Evening, Flight 1 (9 notes)
Red
1982 Château Belair (Dubois-Challon)
88 points
This was on its way out. Nose still fresh, on the palate chocolate, tobacco, earth, little fruit left.
Red
Red
1982 Clos René
87 points
A bit tired. Little tannin and less fruit, some green and astringent notes coming to the front.
Red
1982 Château du Tertre
91 points
Still in great form, much better than expected. tobacco, herbs, dark sweet fruit.
Red
1982 Château La Dominique
93 points
Outstanding old style St. Emilion. Leather, wood, tobacco herbs, cool and restrained. A nice surprise. Other tasters liked this much less, though.
Red
1982 Château La Gaffelière
88 points
Earthy, meaty, almost metallic. Not a beauty, but still powerful.
Red
1982 Château La Tour du Pin Figeac (Moueix)
94 points
A great surprise. This wine showed magnificently well. Dark fruit, sweet tobacco, earth, tasted like a bottle of Petit Cheval. The party was really split over this wine, though.
Flight 4 - First Evening, Flight 2 (9 notes)

Red
1982 Château Chasse-Spleen
90 points
From double magnum. Surprisingly, this showed slightly weaker than an ordinary bottle opened in the same flight. A bit more fat with the same cherry and tobacco notes, but not of the same complexity.
Red
1982 Château Lanessan
92 points
Sweet raisins, cherry, tannins almost gone. Others though that this was far beyond its best, but I still liked it.
Red
1982 Château Poujeaux
94 points
Poujeaux is always showing very well in tastings. This bottle of 1982 was no exception. Tobacco, vanilla, fruit and a dry but elegant finish.
Flight 5 - First Evening, Flight 3 (9 notes)
Red
1982 Château Branaire (Duluc-Ducru)
91 points
Sweet, dry, slightly out of balance, but interesting nevertheless.
Red
1982 Château Palmer
97 points
Pepper, roasted nuts, dark fruit. Very concentrated, an extraordinary wine.
Red
1982 Château de Fieuzal
93 points
Somewhat green, but still nice aromas of leather, tobacco and cherries.
Red
Red
1982 Château Sociando-Mallet
92 points
Very young, dark berries, leather. A magnificent bottle. This wine seems to be a real bargain.
Red
1982 Château Talbot
94 points
Spices and herbs, tobacco, leather. Very mature and still outstanding. Talbot at its very best.
Flight 6 - First Evening, Dessert (3 notes)
White - Off-dry
1982 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel
90 points
Apricot, diesel, nice bitterness and lemon zest.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1982 Château Suduiraut Crème de Tête Cuvée Madame
95 points
Nice botrytis, wood, almonds, very sweet.
Flight 7 - Second Day Lunch, Aperitif (2 notes)
White
1999 Weingut Knoll Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Ried Schütt
91 points
Juicy, ripe, creamy. Pear and peach.
White
1982 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Montrachet
96 points
Dry with the lees very noticeable. Honey, full-bodied, unbelievably elegant. No sign of age.
Flight 8 - Second Day Lunch, Flight 1 (5 notes)
Red
1982 Château Le Gay Pomerol
88 points
Quite a disappointment given the wine's pedigree. Maybe we fell victim to the notorious bottle variance? Wet wood, mushrooms, green notes.
Red
Red
1982 Château Petit Village
94 points
Very rich, opulent Pomerol. Coffee, tobacco, green herbs, very balanced.
Red
1982 Vieux Château Certan
90 points
Not quite as good as the imperial opened in parallel, but still very good.
Flight 9 - Second Day Lunch, Table Wine (1 note)
Red
1982 Vieux Château Certan
93 points
From Imperial. Chocolate, tobacco, herbs, forest floor, very youthful. Quite substantially better than from .75.
Flight 10 - Second Day Lunch, Flight 2 (5 notes)
Red
1982 Château Cos d'Estournel
98 points
Voluptuous and sweet, yet elegant. Tobacco, dark fruit, leather. This is the best bottle of Cos I have ever had.
Red
Red
1982 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste
92 points
A very nice GPL that was rated even higher by most of the audience. Dark fruit, cassis, elegant and classic Pauillac nose.
Red
1982 Château La Lagune
96 points
Got better with time. Unbelievably complex, sweet with plums, red berries, spices. A surprising performance.

Red
1982 Château Lafon-Rochet
80 points
Thin and vegetal, unclean sandy notes. Some thought TCA, I thought this was just not a good wine.
Flight 11 - Second Day Lunch, Flight 3 (5 notes)
Red
1982 Château Léoville Barton
94 points
Tannic and dry, needs more time and was a notch behind the other two Leovilles. Very old style.

1982 Château Léoville Poyferré
96 points
This held very well against Las Cases. Wood, tobacco, game, spices and cassis.
Red
1982 Château Montrose

Very dense with truffles, smoke, dried fruits, red berries. Extraordinary and much better than I remember it.
Red
Flight 12 - Second Day Dinner, Aperitif (2 notes)
White
2000 F.X. Pichler Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Ried Kellerberg
96 points
Very surprised how this has come out. Very mineral, liquid stones, spicy, long finish.
White - Sparkling
1982 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut
98 points
Lees, spices, roasted nuts. Extraordinary and the best Krug I had so far.
Flight 13 - Second Day Dinner, Flight 1 (8 notes)
Red
1982 Château Ausone
93 points
Somewhat green, lacking sweetness. An outstanding wine, but not what would have been possible in 82.
Red
1982 Château Lafleur
100 points
A very humbling wine and very moving. Mint, herbs, frankincense, plums, cherries, spices.

Red
1982 Pétrus
97 points
An excellent bottle, but even this exceptional bottle was obviously quite a few notches below Latour and Lafleur 82. Chocolate, ginger, smoke, earth, dark cherries.
Red
1982 Château La Conseillante
94 points
Compared with the top 82, this appeared to be slightly tired and even bitter. Nevertheless an outstanding Conseillante with some cassis, herbs, mint.
Red
1982 Château Certan de May
98 points
Still tannic. Herbs, cassis, long. A moving bottle, and unexpectedly one of the best 1982s I tasted.

I liked this much better than most people around the table. To me a magical bottle with dried fruit, spices, herbs.
Red
1982 Château La Mission Haut-Brion
98 points
Truffles, nice acidity, plums, very ripe, some thought overripe. Fireworks nevertheless.
Red
1982 Château Lafite Rothschild
95 points
Great, but not extraordinary. Cedar, dried fruits, herbs, sweet but slightly dry finish. But one should not be allowed to complain.
Red
1982 Château Latour Grand Vin
100 points
Clearly a three digit score. Truffles, blackberry, smoke, raisins. Endless finish and lots of life left.
Red
1982 Château Margaux
99 points
Beautifully sweet, raisins, some tobacco, herbs. Truly extraordinary.
Red
1982 Château Mouton Rothschild
98 points
Had I not had the Lafleur and the Latour the same day, this would quite possibly have got a three digit score. A great wine with lots of cassis, opulent fruit, berries, nice acidity.
Red
1982 Château La Tour Haut-Brion
94 points
Leather, tobacco herbs. Slightly dry and short compared with the firsts.
Flight 17 - Second Day Dinner, Dessert (1 note)
Closing
A memorable evening with Latour and Lafleur clearly in command.
