Beautiful wine. More chiseled but less giving than the '90. Very fine with subtle notes of truffles, coal dust and minerals. Tasted from 3 different bottles! Commanderie BYOB Pomerol Dinner.

Champagne and claret (John's place, Croton): Out of words to describe this. It's close to the archetype of right bank Bordeaux that I could imagine; such elegance and brightness to the red and dark fruited flavours here and an array of herbal, smoky, sandalwood and other spicy notes, and more savoury tobacco and earthy flavours framing the fruit here. A silken, graceful texture, and a finish that just stays with you. Gorgeous wine, my WOTN in a lineup of many strong contenders.

This example of the 1989 La Conseillante is more backward than some but, particularly on the palate, it still struts its stuff. Full of violet, coffee bean, plum, ganache, and mineral, I find it totally irresistible. Beyond the aromatic elements there’s just something about the richness and floral elements intermingling which makes the heart beat a little faster.

Not sure about the provenance as this bottle was very advanced. Damn. I've had this wine several times years ago and it was as good as it gets. Not this time.
Recent experiences have been these are on the downswing and best days in the rear view mirror. They have fallen off the cliff fast, which is really shocking as just about every other 89 BDX are still wonderful. Damn
Decanted a few hours, needed it, regardless, its glory days are long gone.

DOA. She's dead Jim. WTF. Bought from a wine merchant a few weeks ago, big mistake. Have always loved this wine and couldn't resist after being given a song and dance how wonderful the provenance was. Mmmmhmmm, hustled.
Upon removing the foil, cork was protruding. Uh oh, I think I'm in trouble, but other than that the fill was about normal. Upon opening, a bit sour, brackish. Uh oh. Let it sit a few hours, nope. Flat, boring, gone. WTF

If you want to experience silky Pomerol at its best, this is a great example. Elegant, and refined, with purity to the cherries, and plums, the wine remains fresh, lifted, and loaded with truffles, roses, violets, wet earth, and a touch of cocoa. Popped, and poured, this is drinking at its apogee. Drink from 2023-2029.

No notes taken. This showed exceptionally well from start to finish. Open and expressive, intense aromas, especially on the palate. Beautiful complexity with sweet dark red and dark berries at the core, some honey notes, earthy minerality, tobacco and truffles; all embedded in a very fine structure with melted tannins but good tension and freshness. The highlight was the seamlessness and perfect balance. I believe that there is more upside with more tertiary development improving the experience further but this wine is definitely in its prime today.
Decanting: Quickly double decanted, back in the bottle, consumed two hours later. Good from the go with little change. A short decant should do the job.

Jason's birthday: Distinct greenness that made everyone think left-bank including myself. Once it was revealed to be a right-bank I was the lone dissenter for this to be a Pomerol rather than a St Emilion because of the sensual elegance that it had. Very pure dark red fruit with a lighter touch and seamless texture that made me marginally prefer this to the Poyferre, but most preferred the latter. Apparently could have been even better.

I guessed ‘89 VCC because it was so lean. Expected more from this vintage of La Conseillante, probably not a good bottle judging by reputation, nothing wrong with it technically though. Back to the old saying, “No Great Wines, Only Great Bottles”.

Tasted blind. Red berry fruit and sweet spice of baking powder and liquorish on top of plentiful mushroom, tobacco and earthy notes. Fine iron-like minerality, just a hint of cedar wood and a meaty touch provide for a wide aroma palette. Firmly structured with tangible but seamlessly integrated tannin, vibrant acidity and tension. An outstanding and leagues above the (still solid) L'Evangile 1982 which followed later in the line-up.

Sublime, I'll remember this as a prime example of a superior wine at its apogee. This was the best Pomerol I have ever had and a top 5 Bdx overall, this was a tiny bit shy after popping the cork but had a heavenly nose of old leather, stewed fruit, tobacco and some salty tapenade. We were lucky enough to have this right next to the 90, which was also a formidable wine but never quite hit the heights that this one did over the 7 hours that we drank them both. By the last glass this was a concentrated yet well balanced beauty, with loads of ripe fruit left but secondary and tertiary flavors shining through, with dark chocolate, truffle, and licorice. This isn't as cheap as it once was but if you love Right Bank Bordeaux this is a wine to try at least once in your life.

Dinner with Wayne at Kevin's. Local Twin Cities beloved Chef Don Saunders killed it for our crew at Kevin's place. 11 of us were treated to a night with Kevin's spry 91yr old dad who delighted everyone! Wayne Loves Cabernet & BDX so we had some potentially monumental reds to compliment a great night while 30 below MN temps whipped at the door. Thanks Kevin! WB,KB,VB,CV,DD,JV,BB,ML,LI,CS & SS.
Ok, this was my WOTN and absolutely superb tonight! The Ultimate in luxurious serenity. Wonderful aromas of cigar, potpourri, dark berries & forest floor. Sauve but weightless deliciousness awaits every sip. Still lovely fresh fruit with plenty of tertiary harmonics. Had this once before in 2014 and surely hope I'm around if another ever surfaces! Thanks Siggy! A particularly memorable btl on a memorable evening!

Absolutely gorgeous! Telltale nose of violet, dark fruit and truffles. On the palate, it is silky, sexy and gorgeous. Absolutely everything you look for in Pomerol. Also, a great food wine, went perfectly with many dishes. At its apogee, great time to pop a bottle.

Acker Pre-Auction September 2022 (Redbury Lounge): Drank side by side with the ‘90 and interesting to pour around and see how different people gravitated. They are very different wines despite same producer with just a year separating. This is also drinking very young for it’s age but comes across as more approachable. It’s all bright red fruits and very open and enjoyable and brings you in a bit more. No rush to drink these, but they are quite enjoyable right now.

Shockingly complete, the 1989 La Conseillante sports a hugely aromatic nose of blueberry and plum, potpourri, dark chocolate, and mineral. The palate is simply packed with flavor and, as big and impactful as this is, it’s so fresh, its richness perfectly cut by acid. So pretty, reverberating.

I could see the pieces -- like someone where all the features are attractive but the composed whole doesn't add up to the sum of the parts. Highly acidic, almost rustic. Powerful, black licorice and tea notes, and became more attractive the longer it was in glass.

This was in a splendid place! I love how no matter the vintage, you always can find the telltale nose of violet! The fruit was mature but still elegant and present - red and black fruit.
Pencil, leather and tobacco all showed, with the wine making positive progress over 1.5 hours. Really great right now!

Wine Tasted at Acker Auction (Marea - New York NY): Small glass, brief note. Dense and powerful fruit, but more powerful structure. I have always liked this wine, but never as much as others have, because I have never found it perfectly harmonized.

Really good bottle of this. Opened and let sit for about an hour. Served blind to the group and the immediate call was Pomerol. Lots of blue fruit. Pencil, leather and tobacco all showing nicely. This continued to blossom over the 2 hours we drank it. Did not need a decant - was perfectly fine out of the bottle with the cork off. This is at peak with little sign of decline. Just a great bottle of wine.

Sweet ripe plum and cherry - both black and red. Secondary flavors of hay, violet and dried herbs. Silky mouthfeel. Light on the palate....reminds of ethereal sensation I get from some top Rieslings.
This wine with Beef Wellington was an orgy in the mouth.
Tired and washed out, slightly too acidic and under-fruited. Not corked. It looked fine but maybe it was heat damaged at some point before I acquired it. The ‘90 next to it was dramatically better and fresher.
Lite pale ruby-rusty; dry, a little chocolate, tobacco, high acid, dry tannins, nice, elegant, but a little thinner than the others. DD Bordeaux 1989-2000 Lawson's Steakhouse

Initially, aroma of hay, wet leaves, manure, soil.
After decanting two hours, pronounced aroma of mushroom, hay, forest. Mellowed out. Deep garnet colour. Dry, medium acidity, completely gone tannin. Medium alcohol. Medium intensity flavour of mushroom, earth, smoke, green pepper, blackberry, leather. Medium+ finish.

Just like us, every bottle ages just a little bit differently. Here, this bottle was pure elegance and refinement, silky, sexy and fresh. Quite floral on the nose with a wealth of perfectly ripe, plums, cherries and truffle on the palate and in the finish. No decanting is needed, just pop, pour and enjoy.

Just beautiful. Powerful aromas of violets, fruit and tobacco. Juicy black current and black raspberries, with flitting notions of candied fruit, supported by cool mint and fresh tobacco. Fabulous mouthfeel: plush with a fine line of acid, somehow both exuberant and properly dry, with velvety tannins. Hard to believe this is 30+ years old. It was an interesting contrast of rich, vibrant flavors with a fairly mature texture. For my birthday: happy birthday to me!

I opened it earlier during the day and double decanted it. When I sipped it at home upon first opening, it was OK but at the restaurant it soared. I think decanting ahead of time helps many wines and we should do it more often! Very exotic wine compared to the other red Bordeaux we had that night. Dark stone fruit showed in abundance with layers of other flavors coming through at various times in the evening. A softer feel on the mouth even though there was plenty of acid to balance all that amazing fruit.

The 89 La Conseillante is simply a monumental wine, a testament to ripe-yet-balanced Pomerol. With half an hour of air, the nose really begins to unfurl with layer upon layer of plush plummy, berry fruit, lavender, ganache, and a touch of cinnamon. Beautifully fresh with a bit of mineral on the palate. This is really a heartthrob with a long live ahead. 97-98
Dinner with the wine group (Millbrae, CA): Medium ruby, some bricking consistent with age; aromatic, classically Bordeaux nose with tobacco, mature black fruits, forest floor; medium bodied, medium-plus acidity, fully integrated tannins, slight bell pepper, limited fruit but appropriate for its age; long finish. Really lovely, classic, fully mature Bordeaux. 94

Subsequent notes on this wine from close to six years ago. Deep dark garnet in color with slight clearing at the edges. Full, forward & fragrant nose of developed, ripe fruit aromas of dark cherries, blackberries & cassis with overtones of earthy/dusty notes & floral notes of violets, cocoa/coffee, tobacco, leather, earthy/loam, dried herbs, exotic spices, minerals & cedar notes in the background. Medium-full bodied with a good concentration of well balanced, smooth textured, developed & mature, seamless, ripe fruit flavors of sweet cherries, blackberries & plums with earthy, cocoa, herbs, minerals & hint of oak/vanilla. Lingering silky smooth finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & some airing but at 32 years of age, it is at or close to its peak of development. Although it may linger at this plateau of development with additional time if stored properly, I doubt any further development would occur. Cork was clean & intact; Fill at lower portion of neck well above the shoulder. An absolutely wonderful Bordeaux.

I still like it but on my imagination I can recall how glorious it was 5-10-15 years ago. Clearly fading and drying out on the back end yet still showing glimpses of the lovely cherry and raspberry fruit it was bursting. with in its youth. Au revoir, mon amie.

The quintessential example of elegance in Bordeaux. The floral nose, with its accents of truffle, mocha, cherries, plums, and wet earth is divine. Silky, sexy, and incredibly refined, the fruit is pure with an Asian spice accent and comes along with truffle and dark cocoa in the finish. This is at its apogee, so decanting is not needed, except to move the wine off its sediment. Pop, pour and enjoy.

Purchased on release and stored by a single owner. Pulled off the rack without standing it up and there was some sediment by the end, but most had collected in the shoulder. PnP without a decant- This wine got better and better as time went on. The in-glass evolution.was really remarkable. Opened with some violet florals and blue fruits. Notes of tobacco and tar developed over 1-2 hours of multiple small pours. Some burned sugar and golden raisin came through for me as well. The wine was fresh, complex, nearly transparent but still packed with weighty fruit. Tannins fully resolved for my taste. Near the end of the bottle, the sediment introduced coffee and espresso notes and was not at all chewy or distracting.
I thought the wine showed fantastic and would probably consume over the next 10 years while it still has fruit. Not sure about the 2060 window given above, as this was overall more resolved than other 89s I’ve had in the past year (Pichon Baron, Palmer)

It is hard to say why some bottles from the same case are so much better than their brothers or sisters. But it does happen. This example is the best 89 I've tasted in years. Not decanted, the nose shot out its roses, truffle, smoke, licorice, cocoa and ripe plums once the cork left the bottle. Medium-bodied, silky, elegant, fresh, sexy and impossible to stop drinking, this is what mature Pomerol is all about! Shared with a bestie for life, the memory will linger.

I agree with other tasters that this is on the far side of its plateau. Red with a rusty rim. Red berries with some iron and blood in the nose. Soft yet still plump and rich. Tannins completely resolved. Still very good but not as good as four years ago. 4-12-17-8: 91/100.

Great nose of violets and tobacco, with black and blue fruits. Black cherry and blackberry flavors, with copious tobacco and sous-bois. Somehow both plush and firm, gentle and energetic. Really, really lovely from the first whiff to the last drop.

I am thinking this previously, decadent, sexy beast is on the other side of its prime time window. The color is lighter, the fruit has lost weight, the length and opulence is not as pronounced as it was in its prime. This is still a very good wine. It is sexy, silky and loaded with truffled plums and cocoa, but it is not the majestic experience it once was. Sort of like what happens to older wine lovers, we are good, just not quite at our peak any longer. If you are sitting on bottles, you need to start popping them over the next few years.

Brick edge and a light ruby core. Beautiful sweet aromas of tobacco, leather, red fruit, and a touch of earth. Very pure. On the palate, this is absolutely wonderful. Fruit is at the forefront, totally clean bottle, acidity is low to medium with enough tannin to lightly grip the gums. It is silky, with a crazy long finish. Wow this is good. It could go for mother 5 or so years I’d guess, before evolving further. Will it get better than it is now? Hard to say.

1989 Bordeaux - 30 years on. (Famous Treasure, Capitol Piazza, Singapore): Lovely. This had a wonderful nose. Pure Pomerol, with lovely lush notes of earthy forest floor, then spice and tobacco, a whiff of smoked tea leaves, some violets, and then beautiful blueberry and plum aromas. Lovely aromatic stuff. The palate was drinking beautifully too. Pure, lifted and transparent, with delicious flavours of fresh plums, dark cherries and blackberries, all infused with a lovely warm spice; and then a nice earthiness ringing on the bass notes. Absolutely mouthfilling, and yet effortlessly elegant - this was power and opulence without any weight at all. Wonderfully easy to drink too, with soft balancing acidity and beautifully silky tannins carrying the wine into a deliciously gentle finish. It just lingered and lingered on the back palate with a blush of juicy fruit, and some lovely quiet floral notes floating away into the distance. Beautiful stuff, and drinking deliciously well now.

Pichon Baron and more (Dino's Grotto, DC): Perfect cork and fill. Pop and pour, drunk over 4 hours. Dark red core, minimal lightening at rim. Good from the get-go, but itreallyramps up after a hour or so with a complex intense nose of ripe red fruits, spices and earth. Medium to full body, lush layered fruit mixing beautifully with some minor green notes, fresh balancing acidity, long finish, outstanding. This and the 2000 Pichon Baron were my 2 favorites on the night.

Very worthy of its rating and very worthy of enjoying! No flaws. Dark, dark garnet color. Moderate rim variation in the glass. Heavy sediment. Beautiful old world nose. So earthy and musky. Dark florals and fruits. Medium tannin and acids. Medium alcohol. Long, long finish in the mouth. Paired perfectly with salad and charcoal grilled NY strip. A wonderful bottle. And, so ready to drink.

Yves's Memorial; 11/10/2018-11/11/2018 (MO): The nose just kills. Spice, leafy tobacco, herbs, with an exotic flair. Still showing some tannin on the palate, lush lush than a recent '95 or the '90. Tons of complexity. At or just past peak?

What a beast. Incredible effort that can still last for another 10-20 years. Great nose, complexity and boldness to be drank alone or in the company of red meat. We had it with a Siran 26, which made the night even more magical. The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are slow. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like blackberry, black currant (cassis) and burnt. It tastes like black currant (cassis) and dust. The body is medium/full. The wine has smooth texture. The wine finishes medium.

I was a little leery of opening my last bottle of the 1989 Conseillante, as the last one I opened was corked. There was nothing to worry about with this one. When first opened, my daughter noticed its pungent aroma halfway across the room! Mushroom, violet, fig, and plum scents wafted out of the glass, which was followed by earthy notes, soft acidity, bittersweet chocolate, and flavors of currants, prunes, and plums on the palate. The tannins have mostly melted away, but it still had a nice little “puckering” as it rolled of my tongue. The texture was lush, but not overly so. I do think it is probably at or very near its peak.

Powerful notes of melted fudge, smoked herbs, black cherries and lavender are in evidence here. On the stain-textured and medium-bodied palate, there are copious dark plums, earth and minerals. At this point, the tannins have largely melted away, and all the flavors have really come together in one special Pomerol. Drink now and over the next decade or so. 96.

A DC Wino hits Chi-town (RPM Steak): Sweet plummy rich ripe fruit profile offers up lots of hedonistic pleasure relative to the great 1995 Ducru served prior. Big bold wine with sweet red fruits in a dense ripe package kept in check by balancing acids. High on the yum scale.

Fully mature, at most, a splash decant is all that's needed to bring out the silky textures and floral, sweet, cherry and truffle essences. This is all about the finesse, purity of the fruits and the incredible silky textures on the palate and in the finish.

Color was a bright beautiful ruby, with a transparency not seen in the 1982. The nose was distinctly floral and perfumed. Fresh roses marinated with red fruit, truffle, spice, and eucalyptus. More weightless than the 82 but not lacking in verve and intensity. So much floral character in this wine. The tannins were silky and round, helping to create a smooth, sleek finish with very good length. Slightly higher acidity than the 1982. This should probably be consumed in the next decade, after which it will start a slow decline.

It was at its best immediately after opening. Sweet and fragrant with that black cherry essence unique to Conseillante. Medium full, good acidity, firm. Fascinating comparison to the ‘82 which was deeper, darker and earthier - and lasted better in the glass than this ‘89.

Even with minimal aeration, aromas of melted fudge, leather and incense are readily apparent in the 1989 La Conseillante. It is medium-bodied, full of plums and minerals, and possesses a very gentle grip in the mouth. Based on this bottle, I would say that the wine should be consumed over the next few years. A solid Pomerol. 93.

This was absolutely gorgeous, but still so young. The nose was dark and soil driven, yet became fresher adding mint, dried orange peel and savory cherry. On the palate, I found silky textures with zesty acids and dark red fruits, before still-youthful tannins reasserted themselves. The finish was long with saturating dark fruits, spice, herbs and cleansing acidity.

Lovely bouquet when opened and quite ready for drinking without much needs for decanting nor breathing. Very soft and balance on palate with a lovely fruity sweetness, not as weightless and velvet as previous experience on 1990/2000 vintage but still very lovely. Tannin molten, nothing edgy at all. Medium+ aftertaste. Really really lovely. Some characteristics are so hard to be found in modern right banks... A great night to pair it with a tasting of US Prime Angus, Korean Hanwoo, Kobe beef and Australian wagyu cross breed. Right banks x steaks are just perfect! 17.5/20

Finally I am beginning to see some development. Still more reserved and not as blossoming as the 90 but I feel this is exiting a sleeping period and should develop very nicely over the next few years. Will last longer than the 90 too, for sure. Expecting it to go above 95 points with time.
Somewhat rustic, fruit dominated, and signs of heat. Tastes more like a '90 to me. Two-dimensional at best. I haven't had much of this in recent years but it does not hold up to the best '89s. 91-92

1989 vintage tasting of 4 Bordeaux Wines, Clinet, La Conseillante, Lynch Bages, and Meyney. Nose of red cherry fruit, currants, truffle oil, allspice, and earth, same on the palate, opened slowly but consistently got better during the dinner, big body, elegant, delicious, mouth filling fruit, needs 3 years to peak, showed a creamy and almost sweet fruit quality on the mid palate, long, long, flavorful finish. Tied for first place to me and Group second place/

Not as good as the prodigious 90, which for the me is a perfect wine. This is more vegetal and the nose is a lot more subdued. It is still a very good wine and representative La Conseillante with great volume and bustling palate, just not as intense as the 90. Perhaps the bottle I had was of average quality, but to me this felt slightly over the hill. Unlike the 90, I don't see it improving further with time as it started fading in the 3rd hour. If you have an iffy bottle of this, I recommend you drink it now.

Possibly my favorite vintage of La Conseillante, and my WOTN at the dinner. A beautiful nose of very ripe red fruits, plum, truffle, violets, and some Asian spices. The fruit is so vibrant. Still right there with its floral, earthy, truffle and red fruit nose, silky, sensuous textures and long, refined, sexy finish. 20/30 minutes of air was more than ample. From a pristine bottle that I purchased on release, this wine had a very deep red center and oranging rims. The medium+ intensity nose displayed mocha, plums, cassis, and some smoke.
In the mouth, this wine is ripe and round with good richness. The tannins were ripe and round and the acidity was good. However, the middle palate was a bit hollow and there was just a touch of bitterness in the finish.
The flavors of this wine are dark and it is hard to tell if it will develop further or not. While it might improve, I am not inclined to bet on it.

The 1989 La Conseillante had a burning orange hue, a sign of its advanced evolution. On the day it did’t really sing and even appeared to be drying out a bit. It was most pleasant wine, with tobacco, truffles and spices but tasted a bit tired and as if its best days were behind it. Qualitatively this is a delicious mature Pomerol, but it did not live up to our high expectations. I have not had this for a couple of years so it is difficult to tell if this particular bottle was sub par or whether the 1989 La Conseillante more generally is in decline. I would be a little surprised if it was the latter, though this was already drinking beautifully in the mid-90s.
Fully mature for me, with lots more truffles, herbs and spices than other vintages. Like the 85, this shows tobacco and leather but on a far smaller scale. From our second magnum bottle - the first was a touch oxidised and I’m not sure our second showed the wine to its full potential. Seems to have been overtaken by the most lush 1990 now for me.

Matter of Taste Lunch La Conseillante with Jean-Valmy Nicolas and Neal Martin - all wines decant for 3-4 hours.
Wines tasted La Conseillante 1989, 1990, 2009, 2010.
1989: From Ex-Chateau Magnum bottle. Colour very brown, certainly looking very developed. Strong barnyard / animal nose. Too little fruit for me left. I found this somewhat over the hill (for my liking, some agreed at the table others did not). Disappointing for the vintage and given provenance and bottle format. A second pouring from another bottle showed the same. Reminds me of why I prefer left bank wines over right bank, I much prefer the way they age. 88-90
1990: From Ex-Chateau Magnum bottle. Quite brown but less developed looking then the 1989. Slightly less animal nose. Some more fruit in this compared to 1989. Better then 1990 but overall just not winning me over, I also felt this was past its prime. Also disappointing considering the vintage and critic’s praise of this (and price of the wine). 90-92
2009: From standard bottle. After the 89/90 hoping for some lift. I felt the 2009 was a bit of a brute attack on the palate at this point. Shame - I just could not feel the pleasure I was hoping I could get. 89-91
2010: From standard bottle. I had tired of taking any notes at this point. But the 2010 was clearly better then the 2009 for me and probably my favourite of the whole lunch. Still not a wine I will be buying for my cellar. 91-93
Summary: After having had the benefit of the Mouton vertical before I felt myself longing for some of those throughout the lunch. It’s probably a tough act to follow but La Conseillante wines sell for quite high prices also. I really wanted to like these wines and was looking for getting some pleasure out of them but was left somewhat disappointed. The older vintages were both past its prime drinking in my view. I guess I am just really a left bank guy and that’s one of those things you can find out in events like this.

1989/1990 Right Bank Bordeaux tasting (Vienna Cafe & Wine Bar): Elegant. A beautifully perfumed and fragrant nose. Very ripe red fruits, blueberry, truffle, very floral, with some Asian spices. Such purity of fruit in this wine. Not as concentrated and dense and the 1990 La Conseillante. Finesse and elegance on the palate. Excellent balance, with tannins nicely integrated. High acidity and a lengthy finish. This never ran out of steam, and just seemed to open and up and improve with passing time.

1989/1990 Bordeaux Dinner (Feast & Imbibe - Evanston, IL): Translucent ruby. Lighter aromatics with soft red fruit and prominent mineral, tobacco leaf and dried herbs. On the palate this feels tight and unyielding with tannins that are still brawny. Initially I didn't find enough fruit but it picked up weight and density over ~30 minutes in the glass. Better with food as well.

This elegant beauty is fully mature. The nose of delicate truffle, smoke. licorice, spice, herbs, cocoa and cherry liqueur moves you in the right direction. Medium bodied, elegant, fresh and refined, it's hard to decide if the silky textures or the sweet, ripe boysenberries, earth and cherries is the better part of the experience. The bottle was drained long before I could make up my mind. A splash decanting was all this needed before it was poured and tasted.

Great Wine Dinner with Friends (RPM Steak - Chicago IL): Lots of ripe black cherry and plum with chocolate and sweet spice. Good power and density. Very enjoyable, but it came across as slightly one dimensional, but that might just be because of the Petrus 1989 in the next glass.

Drinkable, but clearly not a pristine bottle. Brown in color, looking over the hill. Still life, but this bottle comes across a bit dull and full mature if not on the other side. Some guessing blind thought a Bordeaux from the 1970s

An excellent wine. Still delicious after 26 years. Very flowery on the nose, with lavender very prominent. Blackberries and plums on the palate. Very nice finish.

A panel tasting with Chateau Palmer 1982 and Chateau Mouton 1972, and the conseillante performed the best (basically because of good year, maybe). Still young and a bit tannic, very aromatic with bunch of berries and fresh plum, but it requires 3 hours to give its full aromas. A well-done, balanced, full bodied wine that can be kept in your cellar for years more

Deep dark garnet in color with ever-so-slight clearing at the edges. Forward, attractive & fragrant nose of developed & mature, ripe fruit aromas of dark cherries, blackberries & cassis with floral overtones of violets & lavender, dark cocoa, coffee, tobacco, leather, olives, earthy/loam, dried herbs, exotic spices, minerals, pine notes & a hint of cedar in the background. Medium-full bodied with a good concentration of well balanced, smooth textured, developed & mature, silky & seamless, ripe dark fruit flavors of sweet cherries, blackberries & plums with earthy, truffles, dark cocoa, herbs, minerals, pine tar and a hint of vanilla & toasty oak. Lingering polished & silky smooth finish. Drinks quite well at present and should continue with limited developing with a few more years of additional aging.

Sensuous, charming, medium/full bodied, elegant, fresh and mature, with silky tannins and a polished, refined, silky, ripe, fruit filled finish. This is really in the sweet spot today and does not require additional aging.

Popped, breathed in bottle one hour, consumed over next two and a half. Started off nicely, drinking well, a little disjointed, exhibiting lots of potential. Once in the glass, it came together beautifully and delivered on that promise, especially in the second hour. Complex, seamless, wonderful balance, lengthy expanding finish. Still not fully mature, IMO, but plenty of reward for drinking now.

What a joy this wine is to drink! Pure exhilaration! Light-medium ruby with a rusty rim. Still has decent legs. Red berry fruit, Autumn leaves, iodine and a hint of iron in the full, fruity nose. Caramel. Tannin has melted away, leaving rich, decadent berry fruit behind. Hints of coffee, mushroom, and red berries. Silky smooth, very feminine, rich, and chewy with real grip. Drinking beautifully at 25! A hedonistic masterpiece with a long, rich finish. No signs of decline, just very polished and flavory. Could drink this forever. 4-14-18-9: 95/100.

I thought this showed exceptionally well today. Absolutely beautiful nose of lavender, violet, red and blue fruit and a touch of earth. The palate was sleek, pure, clean and sexy blue and black fruit. Great balance and silky texture. Interestingly, the nose shut down after about 90min in the glass, but I expect it would have come back strong. Unfortunately, we drank the wine too quickly!

White Truffle Lunch (Otto e Mezzo, Alexandra House, Central, Hong Kong): Opened 7 hours in advance and decanted for the last two hours. Fresh, bright, semi-transparent beef-blood colour. Nose is BAM!.....mesmerising perfume and multi-dimensionality of white mushrooms, sous bois and spices...we are in clearly in Bordeaux territory after two stunning Burgandies but this has the perfume to match or trump them both.....very 'whole' and rounded.....relatively light but utterly gorgeous. Palate is powerful perfectly ironed-out balance of powdered but still firm tannins and confit balck and red berry fruits. Powerful. Very fresh and alive. As Guy pointed out, it has a great savoury element. Brilliant....fantastic.... but not quite as good as the 1990 vintage we drank at our inaugural white truffle dinner. But no mistake.....La Conseillante is the king of Bordeaux to enjoy with white truffle....erm, unless you have a 1986 Ch. Mouton Rothschild on hand. Thanks, Jason!

PnP Still youthfully dark purple color. What an incredible blt of BDX! Huge spicy, earthy, tobacco nose! Equal depth on the palate. So vibrant and yet so velvety and resolved. I need to own one or two of these if I can! Hum best WS price is $285. Its totally worth it but, out my budget.

Flat out Gorgeous! purchased on Futures and held in cellar until today. Initially with some rather exotic Asian spices, soy, red fruit. Silky smooth without any hard edges. Quite alive at 25. I agree, drink it today! (but I imagine this may continue to hold well for a while).

My first Bordeaux of the new year! Over the past few years, the wine has exchanged its fruits for an earthier, tobacco, truffle, black plum and fennel character. Elegant, soft, refined, medium bodied and silky, there is a good sensation of freshness in the spicy, black raspberry filled finish. Light ruby in color, the wine is fully mature. While it does not require drinking in the near future, there is no reason to hold this any longer. This was only splash decanted. I do not think extended air is in the best interests in this delicate wine.

Color: light/medium ruby -> full diffuse garnet rim; completely mature appearance. Mature, lovely and elegant bouquet of leather, cassis, cedar, mushrooms and a little oak. Beautiful, elegantly mature Bordeaux. Great attack and showing wonderful legs. Sweet fruit, delicious acidity and killer finish. A wine to show those who 'hate' merlot what an incredible grape this can be. Still time in hand but probably a wine to be enjoyed sometime over the next 5 years or so.

1989 Chateau La Conseillante was the first Bordeaux wine I purchased by the case. I remember those early days in the mid 1990’s, when the wine was stacked from the floor to ceiling and was priced at a whopping $40 per bottle! While this is close to fully mature, the wine still delivers lush, opulent, sensuous textures, licorice, plum, chocolate and plum fragrances and a finish that offers a beautiful sense of purity, freshness and velvet. There is no hurry to drink it, but I doubt it’s going to improve.

Drank at home. Initially I was concerned as the nose was completely closed only revealing some iron and meaty notes. This changes after an hour in the decanter. More perfumed and delicate with time: dark fruit, violet, earth and iodine. Some more sweet pretty black fruit on the palate, loads of violet and mushrooms and herbs. Some chocolate. Deep and creamy texture with nice bright grip on the long finish. This will hold but is drinking well right now with some air.

Firm and crisp with a slight green note in the style of the vintage. Showing classic structure underneath with a very smooth texture and wonderful flavors of dark berries and dark chocolate. Finishes with lovely notes of grilled nuts and spices. Still seems youthful with perhaps more to give in time. 93+

2013 Wine Media Guild dinner (SD26, NYC): This bottle was a bit more primary and redder-fruited than my previous one (which fellow taster dzop astutely recognized as more advanced than it should have been). Nonetheless, I recognized the ripe fruit, lush mouthfeel, and baking spices from the prior tasting. Nice long finish, and benefited from the beef still at the table when it came out. I need to try this outside the context of a big tasting so I can focus on it.

Appears a little bit closed at first. After decantation opens up after approximately 1 hour revealing more intense notes of forrest flor, mushrooms, meat, cedar and dark berries. Smooth and quite long but overall not very intense. For me it never deserve the 97 points given by Parker in the early nineties where the 1989 conseillante was more fruity and accessible. By now the primary fruit has faded to a large extend given way to interesting tertiary notes. The bottle was well stored since release and in perfect condition (high fill, perfect cork). I have serious doubts if this is to improve (A professional reviewer gave it 96 points in december 2010 from a double-magnum complaining it never shone as a standout pomerol previously). Maybe it is better from bigger bottles.

Misc Bordeaux (Frederiksberg): Lovely deep, pure and intense nose with plenty of aged notes like sewer, old cheese, dust, earth. Some age showing in the palate but the creamy black currant fruit is still young and intense. Great flavors and complexity with sweet liquorice and raspberry fruit. Harmonic and very smooth wine that is really easy to fall in love with!

Beautiful wine. Tight nose initially... 2+ hours in the decanter and it opened up. Red fruit, red plum, some cassis. Medium+ acidity and med- tannin. Seems to be nearing its peak, may have another few years. Tannins are soft and integrated, great length. Delicious Pomerol, good typicity.

Hard to provide a single snapshot on this wine so I'll describe the life of the wine once the cork popped:
Out of bottle prior to decant: Muted, soft fruit, faint nose......I'm thinking this wine is tired and past it's prime. Still holding on to it's slightly dusty tannins but not much else
Poured into decanter and after 30 minutes: OK...the fruit is coming on. The nose is giving more alcohol than fruit but touches of cedar and ripe dark berries
After two hours in the decanter: Here we go...The nose is starting to lift quite a bit. The fruit comes to the front. The fruit sweetens quite a bit in the glass. The tannins move to velvet. 2-3 layers of fruit, then lead pencil, then leather then pine needles. Beautiful!
After four hours in the decanter: The wine tightens up dramatically. The nose loses it's fruit. The tannins start to bitter. The fruit is starting to fall apart. And like Kevin Spacey describing Kaiser Soze in The Usual Suspects...."And like that, poof. He's gone."

Finished second at our blind tasting, second only to 1990 La Conseillante (of which there were three bottles). While I did not decant it, I had opened it 2h prior to taste for quality, and that may have had an effect. The 1989 was a little less powerful and expressive than the winning 1990, but possessed all the great characteristics of the estate. Will probably last several years still, but certainly felt at its peak!

Super Tasting 1 of 6 - Andrew does 1989 Bordeaux (Langdon Hall, Blair, Ontario): Beguiling nose….. Cherry, truffle, bitter chocolate, spice, with a subtle touch of pyrazene. The palate is so elegant…the fruit so fresh with great balancing acid. Flavours of leather, earth, cherry, spice, cedar and asian 5 star spice. The finish is very long and so focused with no edges. This is almost burgundian in its weight, complexity and agility. Amazing wine.

Super Tasting 1 of 6 - Andrew (Langdon Hall, Cambridge, ON): Really profound nose that evolved over time. Nicely complex and mature, full of spice. Tasting Group Dinner Series (1 of 6) / Andrew's 28th Birthday (Red Room, Langdon Hall, Cambridge, Ontario): Popped and poured, followed in the glass for the evening. Deep ruby, with a light brick in the glass, showing a lighter wine than its two other right bank counterparts. A perfumed nose of black cherry, red fruits, truffle, earth, cedar, florals, exotic spice blend and a nice funk that adds further complexity. On the palate, very elegant, with nicely balanced streak of acidity, giving way to tastes of tart red fruits, cherries, earth, spice and dried flowers. Almost fully integrated tannin, showing only a slight grip on the moderate plus finish. Overall very feminine, especially compared to the others in this flight, approaching the nature and character of a well constructed pinot noir.

A stellar bottle showing pretty much everything I'd want in an older Pomerol. Spectacular aromatics that keep developing with air, a wonderful fragrance combining all sorts of savoury cedar, truffled, smoky and exotic spicy elements and a palate presence that's pure silk, seamlessly layering luscious red fruits and plums with more savoury developed flavours. The tannins are mostly integrated and it has a remarkably plush, polished texture with a finish that just keeps resonating.

Kind of disappointing. Been holding this bottle and looking forward to drinking for the last 5 years. Nose is very intriguing and complex, but doesn't pay off on the palate. And still surprisingly tannic. Don't get me wrong- very good wine, but I was hoping for magic.

Mostly 89 Bordeaux (La Silhouette): Redcurrant fruit profile, with cedar and a slightly greenish minty element that adds complexity rather than detracting. On the palate the fruit is elegant and silky with a lovely core of dense sweet fruit in the midpalate that is perfectly poised and remains medium-weight despite the density. Great wine. At peak.

This Pomerol has never closed down. It's been great since the day it was bottled. Flowers, licorice, blackberry, cherry and truffle aromas lead to a pure, silk and velvet wine. Elegant and sensuous, the wine ends with polished, sweet, plush, fresh, ripe dark berries and chocolate.

89/90 Bordeaux Retrospective with Hart Davis Hart: Really a beauty on the nose. Rich floral, chocolate, dark fruited nose. Carries through on the palate, picking up a pleasant mineral streak - lots of iron filings here, a bit of a beef blood kind of thing. Lovely.

With scents that remind me of a flower shop that caught on fire and was engulfed in smoke, add truffles, black raspberry, chocolate, caramel, licorice and wet earth aromatics to make up the perfume. What the wine lacks in power, it makes up for it with opulent, silky, refined textures that finish with chocolate coated, black raspberry and dark cherry. This bottle offered a better tasting experience than the previous bottle from the same case. That being said, this is fully mature and is probably best enjoyed over the next 3-10 years.

i drank this wine this weekend and have to say it was much better than i expected. it was a delicate wine with no hard edges. it reminded me of the 89 Haut Brion but of course not as wonderful. it was very light yet packed with a prune type flavor but not overly sweet. also reminded me of the 82 Pichon Lalande but without the beautiful nose. i had another bottle a couple of months ago and it was not as good. both were poped and poured.

Wine from my LA Vacation; 7/23/2011-7/31/2011 (Los Angeles): Al Stewart pulled this from his cellar, decanted it, and followed by a short walk to the restaurant. Light ruby in color. The nose is gorgeous with cherries, raspberries, only a hint of funk, and lots of complexity. Bordering on Burgundy as much as Bordeaux. On the palate, this is middle weight and lively. It drinks easily but still has some tannins left to resolve. Certainly mature, and I would assume at peak. Complex cherries with layering and a touch of earthiness. Excellent balance. Long finish. Perfect with food.

BYO (My House): A lovely nose consisting of sweet and elegant red currants, strawberries with a hint of leaves/bush. The nose also has a hint of vanilla and barnyard. Pretty on the palate as well with a fresh strawberrry/cherry fruit and a medium long aftertaste that is quite tannic. There is plenty of complex green herbs and a barnyard like impression. Still quite fresh and a good structure and a wine that will just improve.

The fill was into the neck and the cork was sound; popped, poured and consumed over the course of 2 hours during dinner at Mica. Certainly a very healthy and vigorous appearance, with a purple-ruby core and not even a hint of amber at the rim. Notes of chocolate, very ripe black fruits, and a hint of flower on the bouquet. Rather full bodied on the palate, with distinct flavors of chocolate covered cherry; very round and lush on the mid-palate, with incredible viscosity and a long and lingering finish. Honestly, a bit jammy for my taste, but Nicole absolutely adored it. Seems to be quite a bit of bottle variation with this one, as I had a bottle 3 years ago which absolutely blew me away.

Sound bottle with lots of sediment, faded and brickish ruby red. Delicious nose of muted spices, fruit classic aged bordeaux. In the mouth, the sweetness and lushness of the fruit belied the lighter colour. The wine continued to blossom in the glass over lunch and picked a little richness - but this is a wine that is hanging on and will not be getting any better. So different from the same wine I drank on release what seems like a lifetime ago.

Sting might have sang about a message in a bottle, but this wine was all about sex in a bottle. Filled with elegant, liquid silk and polished velvet textures, coupled with beguiling aromas of violets, chocolate, truffle, black cherry, tobacco, molasses and brown sugar, this decadent charmer hits all the right notes. The wine finishes with chocolate covered blackberries and spicy plums. The only thing sexier than this wine was the special woman sharing it with me. This is close to full maturity. There is no reason to hold it any longer. While it might gain in aromatics, the sensuous textures could subside.

Beautiful mature bouquet with also some green paprika from the CF. On the palate very mature and at first some metal. After some more airtime the wine showed better. Beautiful juice and even some caramel. Refined bitterness in the finish. Full bodied wine. No mistake about it this is a great wine, but I wonder. This bottle has been stored in a perfect cellar from release and it is already so mature….

STG End of Year (Roy's): this was the most herbal of the bordeaux int he flight, with gorgeous rosemary and thyme that I could have sniffed all night. Bordeaux and a sweet Chenin with the Last Tuesday of the Month Supper Club. (Bill's): Now this is not a bad way to start off a night. Just a gorgeous wine in every facet. It’s effusive on the nose with a Siren’s call of sweet cherry and strawberry fruit, earth and spicy cedar. Grace Kelly on the palate; elegant, regal, sexy and classy. There’s a wonderful harmony to this wine and it just caresses the mouth in silky luxury. Delicious sweetness to the red fruit, but it’s not jammy in the least. Drinking really well now, but given how nicely much older vintages have shown, there’s no harm at all in leaving it be for a few more decades. My wine of the night. A+/A.

STG Bordeaux (Eric's): nose: herbal, minty, even hints of mint chocolate on occasion palate: the texture was flawless, with a licorice tendency that danced on the tongue. So balanced and so elegant, it was just a hair less divine than the 1990 tasted alongside.

STG does Right Bank Bordeaux (Seattle, WA, USA): Perhaps faintly over-decanted (about 4 hours). I prefer to watch these unfold with only 30-60 minutes of air. Hints of pickle and tomato leaf. This moves to zingy notes of cherry cola. Perhaps a touch light on the mid-palate and faintly drying in the finish. Nonetheless, this is quibbling about a great wine.

89 La Conseillante at its best can simply be described as bottled hedonism. Fortunately for us, this bottle was at its best! Truffles, spice, fresh flowers, dark berries, coca powder, Asian spices, black cherry and a hint of bitter chocolate made up the perfume. In the mouth, the fireworks took off! Cashmere textures coupled with a cornucopia of silk drenched plums, berries and spices led into a long, sexy, velvet laced finish. I remember purchasing a few cases of this stunning wine for about $40 a bottle. Ahhhh, those were the days.

Anniversary celebration wine. Cork and fill were excellent; decanted and let sit while I prepared dinner. Light ruby red with a definite brown edge. Initial taste - lovely smooth flavors with some sneaky intensity on the finish. After 2 hours or so the wine blossomed beautifully with very nice integration of flavors and a lovely intense and savory nose. Not quite the intensity and velvet, sexy quality of the '82 but very good.

Keith's Blind Challenge Offline (The Square, London): Blind. Red. Dusty mid ruby. Tobacco, slightly camembert nose. This is very Graves on the nose. Similar on the palate, quite a drying slightly firm finish. A 1988 Graves? nice but quite austere. ***1/2 Really surprised to learn this is 89 Conseillante - nothing like my preconception of this based on previous TNs read. A nice enough wine but at the moment not as good as recently drunk 89s such as Dom de Chev or Haut Bailly. Is the dry finish really still tannin needing to resolve - not sure there's the ripeness or depth of fruit to hold on until it does.

Decanted for 3 hours and drunk over 5 hours. As usual, it is very light and mature looking with a very brown edge. Perfect fill and almost new looking cork. (bottle no 6 from a case). Normally we rate this wine 97-99 points because after 3-5 hours it develops superb mature bdx flavors and the texture becomes rich and oily with an aftertaste that will not quit. This bottle however was very young tasting with great fruit and intensity but lacking the extra dimension.

Hubba, hubba! This is a naughty, kinky wine. Dark, spicy, young. Gorgeous nose of spicy black fruits and truffles. I described it as a library wine in the sense that like books in a library whatever facet you wanted to find you could do so in this wine. Clearly WOTN for pretty much everyone.

Spicy roasted blackberries, truffle, forest floor, plum, coco and black raspberry scents open the perfume. Lush, elegant, sexy and rich, this sublime Pomerol offers hedonistic thrills. This is drinking at the perfect place.

At a WineWorkshop tasting of 1989 pomerols. My WOTN, easily besting the Clinet. All of these wines were mature and deliciously so. Notes of caramel, coffee, licorice (yes i know it's not Pauillac), very refined tannins, good mature spicy fruit. And just enough barnyard to make it really interesting. A "good drink" as Michael Broadbent has often described mature claret. Just delicious. Also loved the Gaziin and to a lesser extent the Petit Village, but not quite in the same class.

The fill was into the neck and the cork was sound; I opened it about 1 hour prior to pouring. A murky ruby core, turning to garnet at the rim. Reticent aromas of dark fruits, spice and earth. Medium-bodied, with a firm structure and slightly austere finish. Not up to previous bottles, which have been velvety and lush, with an extroverted and heavenly bouquet. In short, this bottle was a major disappointment, and was thoroughly outclassed by the '90 Lagrange.

Medium garnet. Nose had significant bottle stink that took 1-2 hours to blow off. But when it did it the layers kept opening. Bordeaux asian spices, tobacco, plums. Taste was always good, with mellowness, spices. Very good, but a hair disappointing given its reputation.

The perfume explodes with complex notes of blackberry, black cherry, plum liqueur, truffles, and Oriental spices with chocolate. The fireworks start in the aromatics, but on the palate is where this sexy beast really struts its stuff. Truly a wine for hedonists. Pure silk, velvet, and satin. Incredibly lush and opulent. The wine doesn't have a single hard edge. The beautiful finish fills your palate with ripe raspberries, plums, and blackberries that you wish would last forever. The amazing thing about the wine is that it showed great the day it was bottled.

Another case for me where the 89 eclipses the 90. More concentration and power overall, yet there is something a bit disturbing about the aromatic profile. Rather than clean fruit there is a slight VA component here. Once you get beyond the slightly funky aromatics the taste and finish are stunning. There are no Green herbaceous notes in this, the wine is rich mouth filling & complex with a mineral and dark coco infused finish and just the right amount of acidity to make it very long and tasty.

Garnet red color with brick red/light brown edges;nose of dark cocoa, coffee at first, later overripe strawberries;body well integrated tannin & fruit, mouth coating tannin, soft, but good structure underneath. Black berry, dark cherry, red plum flavors; long complex finish. Approaching it's peak, long life ahead, complex very fine wine.

I remember multiple cases of this wine when I first starting collecting Bordeaux in the mid 90's for about $40 a bottle. I bought a lot and every time I taste it, wish I had purchased more. The perfume explodes with complex notes of blackberry, black cherry, plum liqueur, truffles and Oriental spices with chocolate. The fireworks starts in the aromatics, but on the palate is where this sexy beast really struts its stuff! Truly, a wine for hedonists. Pure silk, velvet and satin. Incredibly lush and opulent. The wine doesn't have a single hard edge. The beautiful finish fills your palate with ripe raspberry, plum and blackberries that you wish would last forever. EWG Bordeaux with Flannery and a couple Champers (Tom Altmayer's): Nose was on the vegetal side for me. Elegant bright palate that gains some thickness with air. Shows notes of green pepper and tobacco with plenty of grip still. This was nicely balanced but it didn't take to me like it did some of my compatriots. The greenness was too far to the vegetal side for me.

This bottle was in mint condition; fill was well into the neck, and the cork was incredibly sound. A beautiful ruby-red color, with a hint of amber at the edge. The aromatic fireworks were launched just as soon as the cork (reluctantly) released its seal, offering up intoxicating notes of ripe red and black fruits, star anise and smoke. Incredibly flavorful, but amazingly light on its feet, with a stunning mid-palate, velvety/round mouthfeel, and a long and complex finish. This bottle was equal to the '90 L'Evangile.

Decanted for a half-hour, which was not nearly enough. Not that the wine wasn't spectacular -- it was. But its constant development, from soft, earthy morel mushroom notes at first, through strawberry and red fruit, to huge cassis and pain grillé after a couple of hours of eating and talking -- well, that's not to be missed, and to experience it properly, to find its ultimate destination, requires more time than I gave it. I am curious as to what it would have become over another few hours -- or more. Since it was my one and only bottle, I will have to see what others think ...

chalky, and almost burnt. i asked some experienced tasters if this was damaged, but apparently, there was a lot of bottle variation amongst the several opened for a modestly large group. in any event, our bottle was, at the very least, disappointing. no rating.

If you like a sophisticated wine that offers a "sex in a bottle experience," run, do not walk and buy this wine! Purchased on release and perfectly stored, the perfume explodes from the glass. Aromatic plums, and extremely ripe cherries, flowers and spice fill your senses. But, the orgasm in the glass starts when the wine crosses your palate. Thick, rich, opulent, hedonistic and pure velvet. This is incredibly silky and seductive. If I could last as long as this seamless finish, I'd get a new career! While mature, this might improve. But, who cares? It's so good now, it was impossible to put the glass down.

Still my favorite vintage of Conseillante, just slighter more concentrated and densely flavorful than the excellent 1990. Lovely fragrance of dark raspberry and dark cherry, very much a fruit-dominated wine yet there's that definite Bordeaux spine of tannin. Not quite as silky as LC can be, but it will get there in a few years. Very consistent from attack to the sweet finish.

It's great to catch a wine right in its glory days, right where you think its showing all it has but no hint of decline. Lovely La Conseillante, relatively light in color and body as usual, but long on focused fruit which is more raspberry than the usual blackcurrent/blackberry/blueberry. Just the right amount of acidity and well integrated smooth tannins. Plus, as Greg pointed out, some woodsmoke as well. Terrific clean finish of moderate length.

Rare for me but this wine has it all. It is a fully mature, elegant wine. It has a wonderful sweet nose of moderate fruits, a smooth, tannin-free palate of fruit and complexity. It has all the desired effects of aging. No faults, a gorgeous wine.

When in Romanée... (Eleven Madison Park): A soft, plush Bordeaux, cradling you in its cottony mouthfeel like you’re a kid floating in a pile of leaves; pretty red fruit with a rusty minerality but it’s that cotton-candy texture that keeps you coming back.

This one also looks older than the ones we have in Vancouver. 79;55. Beautiful looking, thick, very light looking but fairly opaque all the way out and color all the way to the rim that is brown/brick. Nose is very rich and ripe with some mature Bordeaux notes and lots of wood-smoke, figs and very sweet. Balance is excellent with a medium to full mouth-feel and soft and fat but still with a lively finish. Harmonious and unfolding. Palate is very smoky but still clean flavors. Sweet and dry spices and petroleum. Aftertaste is very long with creosote and charred wood (burnt out fire-place) earthy. Very impressive.

This is the first time I have tasted the '89 alongside the '90 and, while qualitatively equal, the profile was quite different as befits the respective vintages. This '89 was more backward, more stuctured, firmer, probably has more stuffing for the long term and may turn out to be the better wine in the future. So, no one was complaining about this dark beauty, especially when paired with the Cervena venison at Cafe Maxx.

A lovely example of a fine Pomerol. Had the trademark silkiness in the mouthfeel and the chocolate/cacao flavor. The fruit was both dark and red fruit. Integration and flow were what you would expect for a wine of this age (actually may have been drinking a little younger than I would have predicted.

More Bordeaux with Leve at Providence (Los Angeles, CA): Life is rough when you have this wine two days in a row. This bottle was far more expressive. Supple, sexy, silky and sensuous. Does any other wine have those characteristics in this quantity? Seattle Tasting Group does 1990 and older Bordeaux (Seattle, WA): A bit muddy on the nose at first with soy, spicecake, some stewed fruit and a hint of stalk. With air this shows more caramel and gets some smokiness. The palate starts out with pine and is a bit harsh. Is this cooked or just in need of a lot of air? There is a sweet core of fruit here, but this bottle had me scratching my head. I revisited a glass of this an hour later in the tasting, and it had improved dramatically and was especially softened in conjunction with beef rib roast. Initially I had given this an NR and later raised it to 92. However, since this tasting I have had several excellent examples of this wine, and I have little doubt that this particular bottle was in fact heat damaged.

Capsule didn't spin, and there was mold underneath (seepage?). Cork was clean with intense red color only at 'business end' of cork. Decanted to avoid substantial fine sediment. Nose of red and black fruits, floral elements. On the palate, very good balance, ripe black and red fruit, with partially unresolved tannins, supporting good complexity and layering into an extended finish. Retro-olefaction strong, with good sappy mouthcoating texture. Overall, still a bit young. Difficult to judge, but IMHO the wine has a number of years of improvement ahead of it, in which case the score may prove to be conservative.

Consistently marvellous and arguably the best Conseillante for drinking today, this is a smooth, juicy glass of merlot. Nicely fruity but with a firm but not hard backbone of supple tannins. Slightly developed red colour. Notes of sour cream on the nose. In the background some tobacco and perhaps tomato. Very silky, smooth and seductive. Soft, defined, and elegant, this wine was a great match for the beef that our host, Lars, served fresh from the BBQ. Round and easy going. (Double-decanted about 2 hours before) Seamless and inspirational. The nose was so exceptionally rich and smoky, I spent more time sniffing it than tasting it! Beautiful bouquet, good oak, fruit, leather and tobacco. Enormously full bodied. An explosion of wealth in the mouth. Toasted oak and lush fruit. All in a perfect balance. The 1989 is slightly more developed as the 1988, but there is a lot of well hidden tannin.

With K and Miranda at home at dinner (meat loaf) watching the Super Bowl (Redskins dominating Buffalo at the half 17-0). Really gorgeous dark ruby color. Beautiful legs; thick tears. Sweet, crunchy fruit in the nose. Plump and fleshy. Has an extra dimension of depth. Rich and mouth filling. Seems to grow in stature as it glides across the palate--very expansive. Great concentration and intensity. This wine is really enjoyable to drink now, with round, ripe, yet firm, tannins. Truly excellent. The critics may be right--maybe the. best wine of the vintage. The only wine I like better at this stage is the Lafite. 5-11-18-9: 93/100.

Once it was revealed to be a right-bank I was the lone dissenter for this to be a Pomerol rather than a St Emilion because of the sensual elegance that it had.

This was in a splendid place! I love how no matter the vintage, you always can find the telltale nose of violet! The fruit was mature but still elegant and present - red and black fruit.
Pencil, leather and tobacco all showed, with the wine making positive progress over 1.5 hours. Really great right now!

Tired and washed out, slightly too acidic and under-fruited. Not corked. It looked fine but maybe it was heat damaged at some point before I acquired it. The ‘90 next to it was dramatically better and fresher.

Initially, aroma of hay, wet leaves, manure, soil.
After decanting two hours, pronounced aroma of mushroom, hay, forest. Mellowed out. Deep garnet colour. Dry, medium acidity, completely gone tannin. Medium alcohol. Medium intensity flavour of mushroom, earth, smoke, green pepper, blackberry, leather. Medium+ finish.

1989 vintage tasting of 4 Bordeaux Wines,
Clinet, La Conseillante, Lynch Bages, and Meyney.

Full of finesse and elegance on the palate. Excellent balance, with tannins nicely integrated. Great level of acidity and a long finish.

Still right there with its floral, earthy, truffle and red fruit nose, silky, sensuous textures and long, refined, sexy finish. 20/30 minutes of air was more than ample. Sadly, my stock of this beauty is really dwindling. I remember the good old days with 3 cases of this in my cellar, bought at the then $40 per bottle price.

Lots of sediment. Elegant, medium bodied, although slightly past its best and somewhat dull. Licorice and black cherry. Final remnants of tannins. A little one-dimensional but smooth and will probably keep drinking for another few years.

La Conseillante Tasting Lunch

He's gone."

While I did not decant it, I had opened it 2h prior to taste for quality, and that may have had an effect. The 1989 was a little less powerful and expressive than the winning 1990, but possessed all the great characteristics of the estate. Will probably last several years still, but certainly felt at its peak!

Great wine. At peak.

Medium-bodied, with a firm structure and slightly austere finish. Not up to previous bottles, which have been velvety and lush, with an extroverted and heavenly bouquet. In short, this bottle was a major disappointment, and was thoroughly outclassed by the '90 Lagrange.

Lovely fragrance of dark raspberry and dark cherry, very much a fruit-dominated wine yet there's that definite Bordeaux spine of tannin. Not quite as silky as LC can be, but it will get there in a few years. Very consistent from attack to the sweet finish.

Dinner with He Who Must Not Be Named (Jim Clary's): Oops, SOMEONE pulled the wrong bottle and brought the 89 instead of the 90. Oh well, drink up! Full crimson garnet color. Full red fruit with spice on the nose. Nice round red fruit, but with a bit of bitterness on the finish.

Initially closed when decanted, but showed up for business 3 hours later when served. Great combination of floral/spice elegance with restrained power coming from fruit, focussed tannins and silky finish.

Opened 2 bottles and one was corked. The other we had with roasted poussin, scented with truffle oil. Elegant, mature, lovely fruit, no sediment. Elegant, very fruity nose and wonderful fruit on the palate.

Much better than the previous bottle that I had.

Plush, velvety and filled with ripe, dark fruit, but slightly higher pitched than fully crrect bottles. Good, rich palate presence, but not at the level of the best bottles

More Bordeaux with Leve at Providence (Los Angeles, CA): Life is rough when you have this wine two days in a row. This bottle was far more expressive. An interesting marine smells greets you on the nose, but mmm, this opened up to show tar, black fruit and mineral. The palate is loaded with licorice, chewy and powerful, dark cranberry, and utterly fantastic showing for a very young drinking wine.

St. Émilion (and Pomerol) offline at Kaspar's (Seattle, WA): Some ash on the nose followed by an utterly seamless palate with liqueur-like intensity, unreal concentration, some tart cranberry notes moving to sexy and sultry power. This is so smooth for Bordeaux it is almost criminal!

Supple, sexy, silky and sensuous. Does any other wine have those characteristics in this quantity? The wealth of ripe, velvety fruit is so elegant, I picture the family hand polishing each grape before gently placing them in the vats. For lovers of elegant wines, you cannot own enough of this in your cellar

This should last very well. It would have been WOTN most evenings, but tonight the '89 Le Gay swept away this fine bottle.

Lynn and I. Decanted for 2 hours. Fairly light and starting to mature. Not a very fat wine. Intense exotic flavours with good fruit and still good tannins. Tastes bigger than it looks. Elegant. Enjoyable but not overwhelming. Fairly complex. Good aftertaste.

The dried cherries, plums, figs, roasted nut and toasted oak aromatics are the type of perfume that should be bottled! Perfect seamless finish of elegant, opulent, decadent, black fruit topped it off. Wow! What a wine! The finish lasts at least 45 seconds.

The perfume is intoxicating with its exotic array of flowers, plums, chocolate and spice. The mouth feel is like pouring liquid silk down your throat. This incredibly round, opulent and sexy wine ends in an ocean of black fruit and elegant, velvety plums. The wine deserves the decadent trophy.

I loved the gentle qualities in this wine - and there seemed to be enough ripe fruit to back it up.

(Double-decanted about 2 hours before) Seamless and inspirational. The nose was so exceptionally rich and smoky, I spent more time sniffing it than tasting it! In the mouth, the wine was at once silky yet lush, and it actually grew richer and more complex over a couple hours time. However, it is drinking great right now. 98 points

Tasting of 3 1989 Bordeaux, lovely, beet red color in the glass, minty nose, dark fruit, black cherry,, rich fruit, medium finish, chalky taste, medium tannins suggests 3 years to peak, still, a lovely finish. My #2 of 3.
