Air France Biz. Nice well fruited orange and lemon nose, slight yeast. Good mousse and a snappy tart med+ finish. No great depth, but good freshness, tasty for airplane fare.

Deep yellow fruit with more orange and tangerine notes in the nose and on the palate than I've gotten from any other champagne. Some yeast notes on the nose and some apple on the palate. Oxidative but not overtly toasty. Good acid, but short on the finish. 90-91 from me, spouse liked it even more.

Intense nose of fresh and baked apple, green pear, lemon, bergamot, croissant dough, and fresh almonds. Incredibly drinkable High acidity gives it a perfect crispness but the overarching impression is of richness. It’s like a patisserie on Christmas morning. Very long finish. Good value.

Aromas of shortbread, mineral, slate and touch of cream. Flavors of mineral, slate, toast and hint of lime. Ends with a mineral driven finish of 15-20 seconds. Continues to be a really nice Champagne and probably need to stock up.

This drinks well above its price range. You can always count on Gosset for great yeast autolysis character. It does, however, retain enough acidity and freshness to keep everything in focus. A bargain!

After five years in my small, modest cellar, right to the new taste of the citizens of Hamburg, this succulent bottle was precisely where you want it to be. No more and no less. Cork lightly soaked and well compressed, quite fine for recorking. It still retains a lot of strength and a level of bubbles inappropriate to its age. On the nose, its strong accent of hawthorn flower stands out, another notes of pastry oven and melon liqueur are in the background. Tremendous merengue mousse with a sweet but balanced acidity as ripe pineapple, which I do not dislike at all, and a steely and salty finish. Under 90? What a joke! Really lush stuff recommended in New Year Eve. I wish you a very Happy New Year!

First bottle out of a case. Exactly what I expected from an entry level Gosset Champagne: full, rich, evolved, well made. It may lack a little in complexity but at this price, $ 20, you cannot expect more. Will drink nicely over the next 2-3 years.

Aromas of toast, mineral, macadamia nut and sea spray. Flavors of toast, shortbread, mineral and a hint of mandarin. Ends with a toasty mineral driven finish of 20+ seconds. This has just a touch of creaminess to it.

This bottle is past it's prime, sadly. Good fruit, but fading quickly into the ether. Good mousse. Ok vinosity. Shorter finish. I suspect this bottle was an older disgorgement not stored well. Too bad.

By the glass at Ichimura @ Uchu, NY. Welcome drink and just opened magnum. Very much a French style of champagne, linear, dry and firm, aperitif , soft aromatics and albeit a firm champagne still with a welcoming easygoing side. Solid 89

Understated and stylish on the nose with beautiful autolytic toastiness, mineral tones and seemingly PN-dominated fruit. On the palate on the lighter side and dry with slight bitterness. Very much an unshowy style of Champagne but does what it should: drinks well, whets the appetite and pairs nicely with scallops.

What a trooper the Gosset Champagne Excellence is. Reliably excellent. Moderately priced, and often available on sale. When tasted side by side with a premium Champagne costing at least $100, instead of being blown off the table, remains enjoyable right after the more expensive one. Good on release, yet still ages well. This bottle spent 9 years in my cellar, and the major change was that the color is a deeper yellow. Vividly acidic, keeps its bubbles well, very refreshing, and mouth coating.

Tasted in December 2016. The NV Gosset Champagne Brut Excellence is a wine that will be ingrained in my memory forever. Not because it is top-notch Champagne, per se, but because I had the pleasure of enjoying it side by side with Domenico Clerico on a majestic winter evening at his winery in Piedmont. The sun was setting over the hilltop in the distance and reflecting off the snow, illuminating the all-glass tasting room and imparting an angelic glow. Just as I thought our tasting had concluded Domenico casually strolled over to the fridge and pulled this bottle. As he popped the cork he exclaimed with a grin on his face, "if you're going to drink sparkling wine you might as well drink the best in the world. We in Piemonte have the best Nebbiolo on the planet, but not the best sparkling." A seemingly small and insignificant moment to some, but one I will personally cherish forever. I feel honored to have met this legendary man before his passing.

NV GOSSET BRUT EXCELLENCE- Blind: this full bodied bubbly makes a statement from the nose through the tail; there’s a toasty component that flavors the pear, apple and peach fruit with a touch of caramel and ginger coming in late; this is very rich and complex with an unexpected generous amount of energy; 45% Pinot Noir (all from Grand and Premier Cru vineyards), 36% Chardonnay and 19% Pinot Meunier, including 24% reserve wines from two vintages. I learned that they also use a small amount of Fromenteau (Pinot Gris) Petit Meslier and Arbanne in this reserve wine. An interesting fact about this house, which is considered to be a Grande Marques, is its small size having 50,000 cases a year total production which is about as much as Krug. Also surprising is that they have been making wine there since 1584 which places them as the oldest currently operating wine producer in Champagne.

Chardonnay 36%, Pinot Noir 45% and Pinot Meunier 19%. Nice, tasty and uncomplicated. Nice lenght and balance but would have prefered a bit less "toasty" and mature apple and a bit more freshness and citrus.

Ripe apple, stonefruit, brioche, and mineral aromas show a hint of sweetness. A full and creamy mouthfeel is offset by a nice bead and a juicy cut that gives lift to the loquat and orchard fruit flavors. Gains mineral tension on the finish.

Zachys Holiday Auction - Dec 2017 (Smith & Wollensky (48th & 3rd Ave)): I feel for this champagne. Perhaps if we had started here it would have been a bit more compelling, but instead we had some wonderful grower ones and so by the time the table got to tasting this I think everyone was thinking more for mimosas than on its own. Everything was just quite a bit coarser - the bubbles esp - which was offputting. Notes were sharper. Not for me.

Grange Festival Opera, Hampshire (Albert Herring - Britten). Limited notes. The House champagne. Full and quite yeasty but with a fresh acidity and core minerality for balance. Good on its own or with canapés. The type of NV that might well benefit from a couple of years cellaring. 89?+

I drink a lot of this without adding notes, but just want to affirm that Gosset is spectacularly consistent across different base years and, if you can get it for the low $30s, a terrific buy. Its yeastiness is right in my taste wheelhouse.

This bottle was an early eighties bottle. (No date for disgorgement found, but definitely an at least 30 years old bottle) Very fine condition and filling. Nice and developed nose, showing old apple cellar, bread, loads of nuts, cider and some coffee showing. Deep and exciting nose. Not much bubbles left, but a fine and mature palate, with nuts, ripe yellow apples, apple cider, developed and beautifully so. Like a great old white Burg in style. Amazing sometimes what a forgotten bottle of “simple” NV Champagne can deliver. This was nothing short of great.

Gul farge på den mørk siden. Masse bobler i glasset, litt grov. Tydelig nese.

Had this Champagne at Christmas and at New Years, and really enjoyed it both times. This is not the driest of Champagnes by any means. There is round, full fruit throughout. It went extremely well with the broiled lobster tail and the caviar. For the price, I will come back to this wine again and again.

Although I am definitely not a Champagne aficionado, I find that I enjoyed this non-vintage, low-priced wine much more than several vintage entries at twice the price during our tasting event. Now, having it with hord'oeurves before the meal, I am still compelled to sing its praises. It is a bit more fruit forward and seems rounder than some others, and went equally well with the saltiness of the crab stuffed mushrooms or the musty/sweet apricot dressed Brie.

This seems like an average, everyday champagne to me. It has typical yeastiness and green apple. It's noticeably less bubbly than most. This is perfectly enjoyable and good quality. But I think there are better low-end Champagnes in the same price range.

a wonderful example of NV champagne from Gossett. Yellow apple and crystallized ginger with good acidity in the form of lime zest with good mouse without being overtly about the yeast. Yes some toasted graham cracker notes but this is about the freshness and this cuvée slides through the midpalate and and down the throat medium length finish. Super value and very enjoyable without breaking the bank. A mid week bottle to enjoy without sticker shock.

Sweet aromas of peaches, pears, watermelons, and some minerals; a bit light and simple on the palate, with grapefruits, bitter oranges, and yeasts; not as creamy and round as desirable; long finish with more citrus fruits and some light spices; overall, 88-89 points.

A good day to celebrate. Well made in an elegant, dry, crisp style. However, I prefer a rounder, yeasty/leesy style. So a well made champagne which improved with time after opening, and will be enjoyed by those who prefer the style.

A blend of Pinot Noir (45%), Chardonnay (42%) and Pinot Meunier (13%). Composed of the most recent vintage with approximately 1/4 of reserve wines from two previous vintages. Aged on the lees for approximately three years before disgorging.
Yellow-greenish color. Somewhat underwhelming nose showing freshness but lacking in focus: aromas of perfumed floral tones, some white fruits, a little bit of yeast and a hint of damp wool. The wine is moderately full-bodied and dry on the palate with somewhat one-dimensional flavors of fresh red apples, some yellow plums and a little bit of kiwi with a hint of steely minerality. The wine is high in acidity with foamy, rather aggressive and quite short-lived mousse. The finish is balanced and mouth-cleansing with medium-long flavors of fresh red apples, some apple peel bitterness, a little bit of tangy, lime-driven citrus fruits and a hint of steely minerality.
A simple, no-frills Champagne that is more about tart, straightforward citrus fruit character than depth, length or complexity. Might need some food to perform better, because now the wine just comes across as rather foursquare and uninteresting. Reliable, but nothing memorable. I wish that the house that markets itself as the sparkling wine house in Champagne could do a bit better already at the entry level. Feels overpriced at 39,90€, as there are lots of more interesting high-quality sparkling wines out there at less than half the price.

Open, fruity nose with a bit of bready yeast, apples, pears, stony minerals, winter apples and quite a lot of green notes, asparagus, nettles and green grass. Fluffy mousse, youthful. A basket full of forest fruits at first, toast, brioche. Then more perfume, spice, minerals. Fluffy texture, overt fruit, all charm and perhaps not so much substance at the moment. Clean finish, shortish. Didn't get off to a great start but with aeration and rising temperature, it began to reveal more nuances and complexity. After about half an hour it became interesting. My guess is that this will evolve into something very different with three to four years of cellaring. 89+

Clean, fresh, a bit lacking personality, but the cleanness sort of IS it's character, with a good acidic streak, fresh white cookie, lemon. So, this was great with oysters. Let the bivalves do the talking (even though they are non-sentient). Excellent new modern style packaging BTW. Very clean, cool, reflecting the style of the wine I guess.

This was excellent, for a NV Ay champagne, really nice minerals and loads of little bubbles, with just a bit of green apple and some spiciness that comes from a PN component, maybe some clove, vanilla and of course there was crumbly biscuit wit the cooked yeast. Creaminess is present but the acidity and mineral keep it in check. delicious and ready now or a year or two, down the road.

Drank with grilled tilapia and asparagus. Nose had a lot of green apple combined with some nice bread smell. As time went on at around the 3 hour mark, the bread aroma became more prominent. The taste was pretty much all green apple - would've been nice to have something more on the palate, but this was still really enjoyable This is one I'll look for again.

Medium-light straw color. Frothy mousse. The nose had pronounced rich and sweet aromas of caramel and honey, with a slightly yeasty smell. On the palate this is citric, balanced out with a combination of mint and mineral flavors. The effervescence is fine, though this has modest acidity and finishes somewhat short. In total, a slight improvement from the prior bottle (see my 12/23/2013 note) but I believe you can do better in the region for a similar price.

Light yellow to yellow color in the glass, clear looking throughout with tiny, light beading. Nose of sulfur, yellow pears, yellow apples and brown spices. Flavors of green apples, lemon, lime and a hint of creme fraiche. Bright acidity, full bodied. This bottle has a bit of age on it and the xtra time has served it well. The Champenois say that NV Brut does not get any better but I disagree. This is citrusy and biscuity will bright, refreshing and even complex. Outstanding. thedrunkencyclist.com
Enjoyed as an aperitif and with apps at a special occasion dinner. Fine in appearance. Expressive on the bouquet, which was highlighted by a note of sweet Hawaiian bread, along with citrus and mineral. Pale gold color. Medium mousse. This was a little sedate compared to other wines from Gosset. The nose consisted mainly of a faint citrus fruit note, but nothing more precise. This was echoed on the palate, which packed a little zing of minty flavor at the crest of the tongue. Effervescence was moderate, with reasonable acidity. I have enjoyed this as a go-to entry-level Champagne in the past, but another bottle like this one would force me to reconsider.

The last bottle of a lot I purchased in 2008. With 5 years of bottle age, this shows some lovely secondary characteristics typical of the more expensive Gosset bottlings: bread dough, dried fruit and sweet yeasty notes. Bubbles are a bit diminished but still lively. Definitely a NV worth cellaring for a few years.

Pale green color. Subtle and elegant yet rather restrained nose with aromas of peeled ripe apple, lemon zest, some creamy notes, a little steely minerality and autolytic hints of cookie dough and almonds. At first the wine seems really dry with rich and powerful mousse and bracing acidity, but the bubbles seem to be rather short-lived revealing a more gentle and somewhat full-bodied sparkling wine underneath. There are flavors of ripe citrus fruits, steely minerality, some green apples and a hint of kiwi. Overall the wine feels structured and balanced, but also rather one-dimensional with pretty straightforward, fruit-forward flavors with little to none emphasis on autolytic complexity. The medium-long finish is bright and refreshing but rather one-dimensional with flavors of steely minerality, some yeasty French bread, a little pithy grapefruit and a hint of sweeter citrus fruit from the dosage.
An enjoyable and refreshing little Champagne with good emphasis on bright acidity and freshness, but quite little depth and complexity. Also, the mousse seemed rather clumsy and short-lived; perhaps a few more years in the bottle might give the wine more depth and elegance? Overall this feels a reliable entry-level Champagne with quite little character of its own, making it a decent food wine, but of very little interest for people why demand some character and complexity of their Champagnes. At 39,80€, this wine feels quite overpriced; there are much better Champagnes and other quality sparklers for less money.

This was from an older, golden labeled stately 15L bottle, a Nebuchadnezzar, holding close to 20 bottles; simply delightful, more mature color and notes of mature stone fruit accompanied the crispiness and refreshing robustness; it was such a treat to drink from this large sized bottle; although I`ve seen [and bid on] many, this was my first taste from any.

Bought it on sale for about 34 bucks, and was curious about the score difference between RP and WS. RP is 88, but WS is 92. I wonder if my taste is more RP or WS. Well, the truth is always somewhere in the middle. I prefer my Champagne rounder and richer than fresh and lively, and Gosset NV Brut Excellence is more on the latter. Having said that, it was a great starter Champagne before a nice meal. Its soft acidity perked up the taste buds and appetite, and at the same time, its classic yeast, green apple, flavor profile were quite satisfying. Really can't complain...

Deep golden yellow. A rich nose with sweet autolysis, strong nuttiness, wool and yellow florals. Dry and developed palate with slightly oxidated appley fruit, buttery round moussé and balanced acidity. Honeyed florality, nuts, some bitter qualities and mushrooms. Long finish. Clearly a bit more aged bottle. Nicely developed. Rich, round and a bit heavy.

Long Lunch at Home with Friends (Pine Close): From a half-bottle that seemed to have quite a bit of bottle-age on it. Surprisingly good. It had a rich, yeasty nose, almost with some white meat, plenty of fleshy apple aromas, a bit of nuts, a touch oxidative at the edges - very nice. The palate was rather more impressive and together than the last 375ml I had a month or so back. Rich, a bit creamy, with lots of ripe apple fruit, so that it came across almost cidery on the attack and through the the mid-palate, where the appley tones were met with some white plums with bits of spice and white meat floating around at the finish. A nice biscuity touch at the tail rounded the wine off nicely. Not the most precise or refined of Champagnes, this was more about fruit and power, but it was very nice indeed, and great with squid-ink pasta.

Its fine, its high dosage, and a bit flat. For $50 you get the depth and layers from the reserve wine but I would like it a bit more punctual. 40/40 Chard/Pinot rest Muenier. (sorry about the spelling)

From a 375ml BYO at Le Chasseur. This was a very nice bottle that went wonderfully with Chinese Zhi Char, especially with spicy dishes and claypot chicken rice - we were quite sad to see the last drop go down. A developed yellow-gold in colour, it showed a pleasant nose, with lots of yeasty scents, red apples, pears and a little touch of vanilla. The palate had a nice richness and heft to it paired with nice acidity and powdery red apple flesh notes. It was not the most refined Champagne in terms of structure and the feel of the mousse in the mouth, but it was nicely full and yummy, with the fleshy feel on the attack wed to a nice earthy, yeasty base that carried it into a decently lengthed finish. A pretty good show indeed.

Brilliant pale gold, with a persistent bead of tiny bubbles surrounded by a constellation of pinpoint bubbles. Aromas of Fuji apple, brioche, and a bit of licorice. Soft creamy mousse. Medium-bodied, fruity yet complex. Balanced with nice acidity. On the palate, tart apple and peach at first followed by sweetened lemon zest, and spice on the back end. Medium long finish.

A quintessential Champagne. The mousse is fine and full; bread/yeast notes are present; and there's dominant acidity (lemon and green apple). Picked this up for $23USD/bottle so its also great QPR.

QPR! This has some good body and flavor of green apples, much nicer than your average dry/bland champagne in this price range. The acidity is just right, and very fizzy on the palate (reminded me a of pop rocks).

on the full side of the spectrum, creamy texture, fresh apple pie aromas, good finish. Bright acidity keeps it light on toes for a big bubbly. Fine mousse. I tend to lean towards the lighter end of Champagne, but this is a fine example of a fuller-framed NV.

Lot's of bubbles. Bright focused fruit, and a little yeast. There was also some stone on the nose. The palate followed with minerals and fruit. Delicious, but I couldn't get too excited--I have a few more bottles to try.

Drank from refrigerator temperature (~42F) to room temperature (~70F). Showed immensely better closer to room temp. Toast, yeast, but lazer-like precision on the fruit (pear, apple, kiwi). A nice dose of the nutty/sherry quality that really sets this style of champagne apart. We paid almost double the average CT price, but I don't feel ripped off.

This had been aged for a couple years and that showed. Tasted aged and slightly oxidized with a rich sourness. Nuttiness accompanies citrus notes. Sweetened a bit as it warmed up.

The color is straw with some golden tones. On the nose, there are white flowers and a hint of orange peel. The palate is lightweight, with an intriguing and quite pleasant note of wildflower honey. It's unusual, but quite appealing. There is a bit of creaminess and my guess is this is not anything near 'brut zero' as there is some sweetness at the tail. Very easy to like NV, with some distinctive character. Great? No. Better than acceptable and a crowd pleaser to pour for folks who do not drink champagne on a regular basis? Yes, indeed.

I think I may have just found a new favorite NV value-priced Champagne, particularly for non-contemplative partying. This was perfect for sipping while trimming our Christmas tree. Really rich nose of brioche (or other sweet yeast-) dough and lots of fruits, many tropical - pineapple is one that hits me. On the palate, slightly syrupy mouthfeel with peach notes, really fine mousse that almost disappears, finishing with a distinct sweet note (assuming high dosage?).

Pale. Chalky nose with a faint hint of green chillie pepper. Fresh attack, a little fresh bread and then a big hit of green chillies, quite jalapeno-like. Curious. Character doesn't change over 24hrs. Makes for a refreshing aperitif - lacks the richness and extra dimension of the Grande Reserve, but very decent none-the-less. ***

Dinner with Mark & Paul (La Peradou): This was a nice step up from the Veuve yellow label I had a the bar immediately before. First choice at a blind tasting of champagnes. After a year in cellar this wine, though NV, has developed more biscuity, nutty aromas, with a firm backbone of citrus, apple and acidity. My favorite NV champagne.

A true eye-opener, at least as $30 sparklers go. The nose is pleasingly nutty and yeasty; it's almost inky, even. The palate shows lemon zest and green apple notes on a broad, generous frame. The bead is the best part; it's tiny, effusive, and long-lasting. This is a refreshing, clean, tasty, and moderately complex bubbly. You can't ask for much more at this price point (except just a bit more length, perhaps).

Chardonnay dominated nose of golden delicious apple, spice, ginger, orange zest, some obvious creamy/spicy oak elements. Sweet palate impression with fair acidity. The wine shows tighter but more focused with chilling, as the acid seems more prominent. As it warms, the nose becomes riper and more expressive, but the wine loses some focus and the sweetness begins to feel excessive. Not a repurchase for me, although it's better than many other $30 NVs.

clean, med intensity, straw, boubblies small and rapid to rise nose: clean, medium I, developing, red apple crisp palat: dry, acid is med, texture creamy, autolytic notes of crackers, mineral, short on length, it is 42% chard, 42 pinot noir, 13 pinot meunier, and 24% reserve ... Initially, didn't much care for this wine with its shy nose and austere taste. Paired with caviar and oysters (which I don't particularly fancy) champagne saved the day as its crisp mineral flavors cleansed those fishy tastes right off my tongue. Better with the above-named foods than drink alone. also learned no malo, and fermented in small oak casks. Hard to tell the presense of small oak casks, and how can they do this for a $40 wine?

This was a very reasonable bottle for a French Champagne. It wasn't quite as nice as a VC, but for the price, nice and dry and very pleasurable. I'm not a fan of fruity, sweet Champagnes (or derivatives), and this highly recommended for those looking to make the step up to a true Champagne but that don't want to spend $40+ a bottle.

Palm Bay Imports (Little Italy-Anchorage): Almost Extra Dry in style. The aromatics were very pleasant with ripe Bosc pear and floral notes. The palate is richer in style than most and had a slight creaminess to it. Bursts of fruit, pear and yellow apples mainly, without the chalkiness or over yeasty characteristics. First time trying Gosset, very impressed.

Weak nose. Enjoyable but heavy-handed and unsophisticated on the palate, with powerful, concentrated fruit that overwhelmed the wine's meager, insufficient acidity. Some appealing green apple notes made things a little more interesting, but not much. I paid $28 for this bottle, and to be fair I liked this champagne more than many others I've tried in this price range. But it did nothing to disprove my theory that I really only like champagne when it's good and old.

Hong Kong Travels; 1/9/2006-1/19/2006 (Around HK): Slightly deeper than normal goldish-yellow with a larger bead and lower volume of mousse than expected. For a moment I worried about storage, but the nose was fresh with very light berryish and citrus fruit and a strong yeasty character. Palate was perhaps a bit heavy (not oxydised, just heavy) with the same fruit and more yeast. Perhaps the heaviness came from the fact that the mousse was not very lively. Good concentration, appealing flavors, broad shoulders, but somehow just lacked any excitement.

This wine came from slightly dodgy storage conditions and was purchased approximately 2 years ago. Rich nose, biscuity, seems very ripe and has depth. Soft mouth, low fizz (noting that the cork slipped out very easily) and quite still-wine like with the obvious fruit ripeness and power. Has character but lacks finesse. Good enough though.

Wine-pages.com London Champagne Off-Line (Alba Restaurant, Whitecross Street): This took some opening: up to four people were working on it, and even a monkey wrench was brought to bear. Reportedly bottled for the millennium, so it has at least 5 years bottle age, though when you’re dealing with something the size of a methusaleh you’d expect that bottle age would need to be at least tripled to have the same effect as in a single bottle. So, all the more surprising that this has quite an aged nose with a touch of reduction. Creamy citrus flavours on the palate, but clearly showing some age. Very Good.

Not for me.

This bottle was an early eighties bottle.
(No date for disgorgement found, but definitely an at least 30 years old bottle)
Very fine condition and filling.

Creaminess is present but the acidity and mineral keep it in check. delicious and ready now or a year or two, down the road.

Medium-bodied, fruity yet complex. Balanced with nice acidity. On the palate, tart apple and peach at first followed by sweetened lemon zest, and spice on the back end. Medium long finish.

Rich and full with big aromatic notes of apples poached in Calvados, orange curd, creamy lemon, and lees. Very full bodied on the palate, showing almost mouthcoating flavors of coconut cream, citrus and spice, finishing with lingering metallic flavors.

Pale. Chalky nose with a faint hint of green chillie pepper. Fresh attack, a little fresh bread and then a big hit of green chillies, quite jalapeno-like. Curious.

Very Good.
