Deep purple still, with plums, figs, and some chocolate. Pretty good medium+ body with really nice mouthfeel and a smooth clean finish. One of the best '83's which improved over 5 days and was great with stilton and figs. Really good now, but will be around for a long while. Open when the mood strikes, give it some air and enjoy.

-- decanted immediately before initial taste -- -- tasted non-blind over a couple hours on Day 1; revisited on Day 2 --
Little bit of a plastic taste; tastes and looks quite young, despite having a soaked cork. Maddeningly, not nearly as good -- or as advanced -- as the bottle I swooned over back in Sept. 2023. This bottle actually came across as young, and being in need of at least another 10 years in the cellar.

This pours light ruby in the glass with light bricking. The nose is reticent on opening. 24 hours of air helps open this up revealing red plum, pomegranate molasses, cinnamon stick, cedar, peonies, and some alcohol spirit. The palate is broad, very plummy, with lovely balance between tannin, alcohol, and acid, medium across the board. While the finish isn't terribly long it is immaculately balanced with lovely red plum character accented with a touch of cinnamon.

Surprised me - in a good way. Long, rich and still fruity with good balance of sweetness and acidity. Complex and satisfying mid to end palate. Better than expected from the vintage…but my only bottle! Would keep 5-10 still if you had more.

Just a few drops. Tasted separately during a whole week. Now we're talking. Sweet as ever, medium-bodied, soft with a sense, closer to spirits, good acidity. What a player it has all you need in a miserable winter evening.
Solo unas gotas.

Recent purchase. Corrosion around the capsule. Fill was into the neck. Tried opening with an ah-so but the cork fell apart. Filtered and double decanted it. Left open in the decanter for about 5 hours before rebottling it and tasting it about 2 hours later.
Opaque with perhaps a ruby color at the edges. It reminded me of a Napa cab. Nose wasn’t giving at first but as it warmed up, notes cocoa powder, bittersweet chocolate and cherry cough syrup come to mind. Palate was full-bodied, velvety, with blueberry pie, ripe figs, and some of that chocolate from the nose. There was enough acidity to counter the wine’s sweetness. A delicious wine.

FTLOP 18th Anniversary; 11/17/2023-11/19/2023 (Seattle, Washington): Dark opaque purple with garnet edges. Bursting with dark bramble fruits and loganberry on the nose, its rich flavor profile unveils primary notes of blueberry, blackberry, and black currant. Fine-grained tannins contribute to the structure. Very long, lush finish.

Filtered through a coffee filter and decanted for 3 hours before tasting. Brown with a bit of ruby in color.
Deep, brooding, and very fresh. Fresh nose of caramel, blueberries, apricots, spices, a bit of orange peel, and walnuts. Not as sweet as I was expecting - in fact might be the driest VP I have opened in years. No heat at all from the alcohol. Still has a lively acidity level, great balance, structure, depth, and doesn't even taste like it's been in the bottle since 1985.
Palate follows the nose with the addition of sour cherries, figs, blackberries, and a bit of cocoa and coffee. Tannins are still present and really structure this port for it's everlasting finish. The fruity side of the finish consists of blueberries, apricots, figs, and orange peel. After the fruit - granite, black pepper, Christmas spices, tobacco leaf, and a bit of pine needle develop. After all of that a burst of dark violets pops out a full minute into the finish.
This bottle is a prime example of what great Vintage Port should be like. Ignoring the color - everything about this port is very youthful. Approachable, tasty and just great.

Full and deep nose. Black fruit. Blackberry and blueberry. Very fresh and deep. Complex. Minerally notes. Raspberry perfume intermingles. Full and massive palate. Developed. Dense and deep. Very good grip. typical Graham style. But not as sweet as some. This can be cellared further. In a much, much better condition than the bottle tasted in 2017, that was already mature.

Lovely pure fruit. Should probably decant as it really comes around in a big glass if you can wait that long. So fresh. Whoever said to drink by 2021 needs to adjust that by 30 years!

Recognizable Graham house style and a wine that has aged better than most 83s that I have tasted. Still a youthful hue, plenty of fruit and structure to hold this together for many years to come. Excellent length and balance.

Ten minutes after decanting, at 16 degrees or so. Lovely nose of dark fruits and licorice (pomfret cakes). Silky texture, very much present, even exuberant, some tannin and long aftertaste. Great pleasure, and sort of continously true to what it tasted like in the 1980s. I hope my registration in CT is right, meaning that there should four more bottles of this.
With dessert, it sort of became introvert. But the next day, even if decaying a little, it was again superb, dark, soft, complex, with further aromatic development towards smoky notes and more licorice.

This is a delicious Port that still tastes young. It's a sweet syrup with some drying on the tongue. It then blossoms with woodier, darker flavors. This is good now but might take on more depth with many more years of age, perhaps decades. However, this is my last bottle.
The cork fell apart upon opening, so there was some cork to be fished out of the wine and it may have affected the taste. I had to filter and decant it.
I would call this Port a dessert wine, not austere. It was perfect with a simple cake, less so with Stilton. Just my opinion.

Guys Port Weekend - Las Vegas; 1/20/2023-1/21/2023 (Las Vegas, Nevada): Red fruit and Christmas spice on the nose with a touch of spirit. The wine is warm on the palate, with plum and dusty raspberry notes. It has great complexity and well-rounded tannins. The long finish exhibits a hint of spirit, but otherwise is long and pleasant.

A private lunch with friends (at home): Fourth bottle from an eight-bottle lot purchased at auction in 2018. Directly after opening (around 10.30am) it was pretty hard and hot, so I decided to double-decant immediately. It was served around 4.30pm, when it had recharged its batteries, and developed the Graham 1983 character which I know and love. Although this bottle did retain a certain stemminess on the nose, and a bit more heat on the finish than I would ideally have liked. Other than that it is a very fine Vintage Port, drinking really well now, with admirable freshness and lots of minerally energy, medium-sweet, ripe cherry fruit and cedar, spices and flowers, good weight but elegant, good tannic grip and very good resonance and length. Drink now - 2033.

So glad to see some fellow afficianados here apart from the last two commentators. I have drunk vintage port throughout my adult life and this is the finest Graham I have tasted. A gift to myself on my 79th birthday. I can only sympathize with those who find it wanting. Graham is not Taylor or Noval, known to be lighter and sweeter. Just right for a February night in New England.

Day two=Not getting much here to write home about. Open. No crazy development but it has shed the youth that's still apparent in 85"s.
Spirit kinda sticks out but only because there's not much else beyond maybe cherry cordial, spiced raisin and plums... if I were served this in a coupe glass and told it was a Manhattan I could be fooled

Not the layers of fruit and flavor I look for in vintage ports. Yes it had dark fruits, candy, hints of leather but not the depth that beckons you to explore further. Balanced. Modest finish. One bottle left...time for a fine sauce.

FTLOP 16th Anniversary Tasting; 7/23/2021-7/24/2021 (Seattle, Washington): Dark plum in color. Some mint and light herbal notes on the nose. A little dryer flavor profile, but still great richness on the mouthfeel. Mid-palate shows bright red fruit and some hints of cinnamon. The red fruit notes continue into the long, balanced finish. Extremely well balanced and the richness of the palate really carries this wine a long way.

Justin's bachelor party (Gravitas - Washington, DC): This is a beautifully mature Port. A lot of dry dark fruit, dry fig, fruit cake, licorice, dark caramel, dark spices and brown sugar. Beautifully integrated palate, very finely layered rich dry fruits, good acidity and mineral, and a seamless long dry black fruit driven finish. This still shows ample fruit. Really enjoyable.

This is a lovely and fairly mature vintage port that is thickly-textured and very layered and smooth. There are flavors of cherry cough syrup, leathers and rich spices along with hints of menthol and stewed purply prunes. The finish is fine and plush with full but pillowy tannins and complex notes of candied dark berries, toffee and smoky minerals. Plenty of life left here. 92+

Wine with the desserts at our "Lambs to the Slaughter" event at Ruth's Chris in Minneapolis. Served (simultaneously with Stilton and an opera cake made with Grand Marnier to avoid offending either the "sweet first" or the "cheese first" crowds) with a lesser Sauternes. Wine was decanted pre-consumption for four and a half hours (by staff prior to our arrival) through a screened aerating funnel. The dredges of this wine were about 15% of the wine at the bottom of the bottle. Bottle had been upright for 5 days. Port was clear; deep garnet in the bowl and lightening to a thin amber ridge. On the nose: blackberry, bing cherry, mulberry, toffee and allspice. In the mouth: a melange of deep dark fruits, a little coffee and chocolate. Smooth as silk. Long finish, just slightly warm. Outstanding with both the cheese and the opera cake. Glad I have 2 more bottles.

Dark purple red with some bricking. Aromas of violets, cassis, black/red fruits, hint of baking spices, bbq smoke on the nose. A silky and dense palate follows through with smoky cassis and black raspberry compote, tar, medium acidity, no tannins and a long perfumed, sweet finish. Fabulous.

The 1983 is a very fine vintage at Graham's. It's probably the best port of the year, even though Warre at its best is a contender, and Taylor is not far off. This bottle confirms the favourable impressions from earlier bottles. Elegant and cedary nose, not as sweet as some other vintages at Graham's, vibrant and youthful, arguably a bit hot on the finish, but the complex flavours of cherries, warm spices, dark chocolate, flowers and eucalyptus are particularly lovely. Fresh and still with ample tannic grip. Holds up effortlessly over two days in the decanter. This should last another ten years with ease, but it will dry out eventually.

Kristin and Colin's 30th (Chicago, IL): I liked this more than the 1980 last night. The nose here has a pronounced figgy element, with some really sweet aromas of red fruit too. It's pretty light on the nose and palate, and there's a really nice elegance here. The spirit here seems really tame, and you don't pick up very much of it on the nose or the palate.

WSET 3 Reunion (2 mo) (Undisclosed): Decanted after standing for 2 days. Aired for about 5 hours in decanter and drank over only about 45 mins. Expressive out of the bottle but shut down during hour 2 before blooming again at 5 hours. May have improved more with 6 to 8 or on the following day. This has been a reliable vintage for me, but I prefer complexity in the nose over dense fruit (versus 1985, for example). There is significantly more tertiary to be revealed even after 34 years in bottle IMO.

Tasting at Graham's (Graham's 1890 Lodge, Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal): Not a world-beater, but this was a pleasingly charming port, just entering into its mature phase. It had a lovely round bouquet, with nicely integrated aromas of dried muscats and black raisins, strawberry jam and hints violets; all these infused with complex little notes of peppery spice and dried earth, some dark chocolate, and then just a little hit of eucalyptus. Really nice. The palate had a nicely, soft balance to it, with gently melting acidity and fine-boned tannins lending a sense of structure to yummy flavours of dried muscats, black berries and dark cherries, all glowing a gentle sweetness. The structure came out just a touch more towards a long finish, where the fruit was met with notes of spice and liquorice, and then a long tail of bittersweet herb sweeping away into the distance. This had developed nicely since I last had it a decade back. Still fresh, still nicely structured, but already nicely resolved and quite charming - this is pretty nice vintage port to drink at the moment, but with tons of live ahead of it yet.

Very fresh and alive, notes of plum, red and black berries, cedar wood, tobacco leaf, sweet spicee, some flowery notes too. Medium-full bodied, with pretty high sweetness (Graham's) but nicely balanced by medium+ acidity and some medium+ tannin thats is adding structure. Excellent length in the nose but slightly rustic on the palate. Still very pretty with very good length.

Imported by Matthew Clark & Sons Ltd, London EC1. Black cherry and Christmas spice, very youthful and vibrant for its age, pain d’épices, fresh and tannic, elegantly sweet, cedar and crushed red berries; hint of vanilla on the finish, hint of heat, excellent length. Slightly darker pitch than the bottle tasted in January of this year. Great stuff, and prices at auction are still keen. Develops a very moreish character on the second day of plums soaked in alcohol.

Pureed strawberry and raspberry, but still agile and elegant. Some Christmas spice as well. Flavors just unfold layer and after layer. Acidity keeps it fresh and provides the necessary lift. Ripe, integrated tannins. In a very nice place right now.

Decanted 2 hours before drinking and followed over 3-4 hours. Quite a dense colour for the vintage. Very Grahams in feel - bold ripe fruit with notes of leather, liquorice and baking spice. Unlike Taylor 83, this has a lot of life left. Just lacking the intensity of the best vintages ****+

First taste immediately after decanting: Kind of rotten nose and a somewhat brutal taste with tannin and alcohol. But the aftertaste continues to expand for quite some time in a velvety raisiny and dark-fruited sweetness. Promising.
Eight hours later it is soft and sweet and less juicy than it used to be. Lovely drink.

Excellent. I am not a super-experienced Port drinker, but I found this very satisfying on all levels. Aging had probably softened some edges, but otherwise this tasted very fresh at 33 years. At first it was like eating (well, drinking) candy from the gods: very sweet and delicious, but not too complex. Then, as it opened up, the complexity started to be noticeable. Later glasses of it were exquisite, with all sorts of subtle, sometimes almost salty flavors coming out. The last sips over the sediment were back to its roots in grapeness. A fecundity of grape.
Great soft texture throughout. A marvelous Port. I'm sure it could age longer, even much longer, with no issues, but it is good now.

Portugal; 9/18/2016-9/25/2016 (Portugal): Ruby with slight bricking appropriate for age; nose is moderately aromatic, well integrated, spice with residual red fruit; palate is full bodied, integrated red fruits with plenty of spicy complexity, sweetness is moderate and in balance, medium balanced acidity, medium soft integrated tannins, developing tertiary character; medium-plus finish with some Christmas spice. The nose could use a bit more intensity, but the palate makes up for it with its complexity and balance. Nicely integrated, drinking well now. 94-95+

Delicious but unexceptional for vintage port. Black currant and maraschino cherry with subtle hints of pencil shavings and bacon. Pretty good weight. Tannins are hardly noticeable. I would say this wine is at its peak right now, though it could use more breadth and might acquire it with more aging. Or maybe -- vintage port never gets very complex; it should be judged on its power and purity?

Just stellar port. Probably the best port I have had to date. The nose is beautiful with crushed dark fruits, some dried fruits, spice, leather, damp earth, tobacco, dried violets. The palate is pure pleasure. The balance is lovely and there is almost a finesse (if there can be finesse in port) and elegance to it that is just delicious. This is significantly better than the '85 Dows I had recently. Really great port and still seems to have plenty of time ahead.

The Port Forum Does Grahams VP in NYC (Lupulo Restaurant, NYC): The most backward of the group. More so than the 1985. Still very tannic, but I do not know the decant regime. I rate this based upon potential, because it is similar in a linear and youthful way to the other Grahams we had tonight. Big red fruit but again with potential for complexity if it breaks out from the tightness, but it's got a long way to go. Definitely over 10 years unless someone forgot to decant. Maybe the guy who brought this can post the decant regime.
I have the 1983 Quinta do Noval, which was from the yuk period at Quinta do Noval. For every ounce of thinness and inadequacy there is in that, this has an equal amount o force and power waiting to break out.

Dark core but distinctly tawny edge. Elegant nose spice, ground pepper, dried fruit. The palate has an amazing intensity of spice, pepper, black cherry and raisined fruit which is still very present. Super long finish, a wine to truly saviour and much better than when I drank this wine a couple of years ago.

Deep reddish fig color with a little bit of developed translucency. The nose feels somewhat restrained and quite evolved with aromas of ripe red cherries, wizened figs, some dusty earthy tones, a little bit of blackberry jam, light peppery tones, a perfumed hint of wild flowers and a touch of blueberry liqueur. The wine is hot, full-bodied and intense with powerful, sweet flavors of cherry marmalade, fig jam, some dried dates, a little bit of bitter peppery spices, light raisiny tones, a hint of bilberry and a touch of developed savory character. The flavors show more development than the still very firm and assertive structure with its remarkably high acidity and still moderately grippy, grainy tannins. The alcohol makes the mouthfeel quite hot. The finish is hot, moderately tannic and very long with bold, sweet flavors of raisiny fruit, dried dates, some pruney character, a little bit of peppery and slightly bitter spice, a perfumed hint of wild flowers and a lifted touch of VA.
An impressively structured and still remarkably tough Vintage Port that shows some evolution in the fruit department but noticeably less so in the structure. Overall the wine is quite youthful, but perhaps a bit lacking in balance: the fruit flavors seem to have faded away a little, making the acidity and the alcohol stick out slightly. Nevertheless, the wine is still in a great phase and most likely will continue to develop from here. It is always possible that the wine was kept in not-that-optimal conditions and a pristine bottle would show much better than this one. Perhaps a bit expensive for the style at 130€.

Popped and decanted and left for 9 hours or so before drinking. Light ruby with brick edge, black and red fruit and hints of spice on the nose. Color: Dark purple/red. Not opaque, but impressively close for a 30-yr old Port.
Nose: Lush, rich fruit. Some that hits at blueberries, some that hints at something richer. There's some alcohol, but it's fragrant and not at all overpowering.
Palate: Rich black cherry, on the tarter side for black cherry. Moderate tannins that are still on the slightly rougher side. Quite sweet but that's countered by a tanginess to the fruit. Paired very well with my New York Strip steak, which had a salt and black pepper rub along with a mushroom cream sauce.
Finish: Good length, with lots of leftover berries and pleasant warmth.
Score: 94 points. I usually like the G85 better than the G83, but that's typically because the G85 is more approachable. We may be getting to the point where that's no longer the case as the G83 matures, and I'm beginning to think that the G83 might be a better Port for the long haul.

On the first night of opening, it was spiritous and a bit hot, with some good stewed fruit and prune character. On the third night after opening, it has softened nicely and shows the mature, more mellow side of the wine. It still has a bit of heat, and although the rest of the tasting group loved it, I am not quite sold - due to the alcohol seeming to be out of balance. It might have been an off bottle but it seems to be drinking as well as it's going to - and could have been better a couple years ago, before the fruit fell apart?

Clean cork. Gave it an hour decant after removal of sediment. Wow - what a beautifully balanced Port. Notes of blueberry, blackberry, fig on the front and mid-palate, with a strong punch of dried fruit on the finish. Drinking great now, but will be interesting to see how it fares in 5-10 years.

Very clean cork and clear wine. After a few hours, very sweet, plummy fruit with good length. Fully resolved tannins. Will certainly last another 10 or more years, but no reason to wait.

Strong colour, garnet; ripe/fresh figs, coffee, iron filings, real presence; remains sweet, fleshy, a spirity bite; lovely warm finish, extended. Fine. Fully mature, now & next 20 years.

Same score/notes and previously... but can highly recommend the sediment for cooking. Tried tonight with steak and chilli con carne. Added a wonderful richness, reminded me of the impact of the marrow from Osso Bucco. Grahams seems particularly good for cooking due to the sweetness. Drank the port afterwards with 2yr aged Gouda cheese. I think this will be a cracking vintage of Grahams in another ~10yrs - very good value, worth seeking out more cases.

Dark with just a hint of Tawny. Blueberry, Red Currant, and Cherry. The body is Medium/Full. The wine finishes Long. Surprisingly fruity and young tasting for it's age. This vintage has been hit/miss for me, but this bottle was simply outstanding.

Decanted a day ahead of time, it was the right thing to do. Had a few sips right after opening and 4-5 hours later and it wasn't quite itself yet. Tasted it the following morning and it was showing really well. The spirit had largely vanished, the wine had a little acidity that balanced the sweetness really well. Put it back in the bottle and shared w friends later in the day, everyone seemed to love it.

Drank nicely after a 5hr decant. Still showed some spirit and not as dense as I'd expect at that point. Drank wonderfully the following day, no spirit left, just a mouthful of joy. Not overly sweet, had a little acidity that balanced things out.

Popped and poured, nice garnet color, nose pretty closed, black cherry and chocolate notes dominate the initially reserved palate. Picked up weight and complexity after an hour in the glass, very nice. Should let future bottles breath for several hours.

This pleasantly smells exactly like road tar! Deep dark fruit (raisins, plums, grapes). Viscous and light weight in the mouth. The finish goes on forever. I'm glad that I have another bottle to enjoy. Definitely needs 8-10+ hours to breathe.

Decanted half bottle for 3 days; plugged and chilled remainder; decanted remainder 12 hours. The 12 hour decant had slight heat remaining and a bit stronger fruit. The 3 day decant was so smooth and buttery. Compared to AJ's 2003 Grahams--half decanted 3 days, half 2 days. Easy to see the Grahams style consistent between the two. More fruit in the 03 as expected. Neither as conservative as Taylor nor as succulent as Fonseca.

A private dinner (Restaurant La Tour d'Argent *, Paris): Half bottle. Very lively, young apprearance; more than a touch of VA on the nose, fabulous core of sweet black cherries, chocolate and spices, hint of nuts; fleshy, velvety, well-extracted. Still a young VP at 30 years of age, energetic, elegant and with excellent backbone and very good length. Drinking well now but will last for another 10 years at least.

Enjoyed this, one of the sweeter Grahams vintages - and like others also improves significantly now with extended decanting (6hrs for me) and then cooling back to cellar temperature. More user-friendly than the '77, which I have found can be outstanding with extended decanting. Think the '83 won't have quite that longevity but still a solid Grahams entering peak drinking window

375 ml bottle purchased from recent AMC online auction. In spite of concerning ullage, this drank as it should. Showing well, with tannins mostly resolved; good fruit/berry and iron in the mouth -- along with some remaining structure. Very nice.

From memory: Medium garnet. My first serious port so not much to compare with. Still; very enjoyable – rich and sweet with hints of red berries, raisins, spices and caramel. Great with Stilton.

From a bottle I've cellared for 24 years, and the first port I've had in a year or more. Tannins fully resolved, and this is ready to drink, but I'm sure it will hold for many years without degradation or significant improvement. Not as sweet as I expect Graham's to be. Very smooth, but not terribly complex. 10 more in the cellar.

Drank at Chris B's leaving do... Sat open for several hours. Little change from a few years ago, carmel, sweet fruit, glycerin, candied finish. Nice, but not that much of a show stopper. Went well with a petite cigar w Garv.

Had another one of these beauties last night. Just amazing. Gorgeous sweet taste. Typical Graham's. Its still amazing value even to buy now. I had no problem with after effects which I feel is always the case with aged wines. Much gentler on the brain. Rating for this one is 93 give or take. I think I shall have to purchase more port. I like it best from the cellar approximately 12 degrees which agrees with the sweetness.

Decanted with first glass at three hours. This was smooth and warming. Sweet but in balance. Tobacco notes come and go. The alcohol on the finish reminds me of bourbon and interestingly the palate actually tastes something like a Manahattan. Tasted just a bit better the next night (had enough left for one full port glass).

Some medicinal aromas at first, which seemed to subside with time in the glass. Red fruits. Maturing nicely. Some licorice notes. Not a big port, but fairly well balanced and enjoyable now.

The last of 6 wines drank last night with Kim and other members of the Hickory Wine Club at a wine dinner at our house. A 375 cc split, very good, aged / matured very well with no evidence of decline and in my estimation many years if not a decade or two of further cellaring time left. At this price point actually not an unreasonable QPR wine. Surprisingly mellow, complex and balanced nose of burnt sugar, figs, raisins and blueberry with an extremely rich and well balanced flavor profile of brown sugar, figs, spices and blackberry compote. Definitely recommend this port.

Medium red color with some bricking toward the rim. Decanted cleanly with expected amount of sediment/crust thrown. Initial nose is of brown sugar, fig, toffee, and raisins. On the palate, this shows a slightly medicinal red berry note with anise, sweet date, and raisin notes filling in a slightly lean mid-palate experience. The finish is long and chocolaty. On the Graham scale, this is less sweet than I expected, but this is a good Vintage Port. This is in no danger of decline. Drink or hold.
On Day 3, this has lost the medicinal notes and has taken on classic walnut and sweet toffee notes. I enjoy it more with the extra air.

Decanted about 3 hours and consumed over 2 hours. Great stuff. Powerful nose of red fruit and some raisins. Sweet on the palate, but lacking in the complexity that would merit a higher score. Not a heavyweight, but excellent. Overall: very, very good and a fantastic value. In my opinion, probably at peak not likely to improve.

Popped and poured, with no decanting. A stark contrast to the 1983 Ferreira Qt. d. Seixo VP, as this VP was still a dark purple color and a thick blackberry nose. While the Ferreira was soft and elegant, this Graham's was dense, rich, tannic, and drank like a toddler compared to the fully mature Ferreira. A full and long finish lingered and left me licking my lips for more. This is nowhere near mature and probably still has another 15-20 years before it starts getting to that stage. 94 Points

Off-putting nose dissipates shortly after opening and yields to a classic aroma of caramel, fruit compote. Sweet, well balanced port; medium-bodied, with a nicely integrated alcohol and plenty of structure, this port can effortlessly evolve in the bottle for another 10+ years. Complex, but lacking the 'wow' factor. A solid B+; would have wished for a more memorable composition.

Cork was a disaster, just turned to dust. Screwpull just took a core out. When decanter, didn't filter, so had to do it again. Happily, port was fine. Perfectly clear, vibrant ruby red. At least 10 years left to go. Very mellow and smooth. Hints of violets and sloe gin. Classic, and well worth the wait.

About 2 years ago, I found a bottle to be disjointed. No such problem here! This has pulled itself together beautifully and now seems at the peak of harmony and maturity. Ripe, not overly sweet, and with good binding acidity. Not a heavyweight, but I imagine that well kept bottles should perform at this high level for quite some time.

First day: Powerful and mouth-coating, slightly bitter, flavors include raisins, prunes and anisette cookies. Second day: Alcohol showing, tastes like blackberry cough drop, penetrating flavors. Third day: still thick and syrupy, bit of cough medicine in a good way, especially long finish tonight.

Really good on this night. Wasn't planning on opening so wine wasn't 100% proper temperature, decant time, etc, but at the end of an otherwise underwhelming wine tasting, this was pure and delicious. Only one in the group guessed as old as 83, the wine was so young tasting.

This bottle changed materially during the time we enjoyed it. It was decated prior to the part, returned to the bottle then served several hours later from a corked bottle. The initial impreesion was a bit unsual, very medicinal smell, but a pleasant taste. Over time some of the medicinal smell blew over revealing a dryer port taste with plenty of grip.

Winekakis' Dinner at Asia Grand (Asia Grand, Odeon Towers): Beautiful showing this time round. Fresh nose, with chocolate, mahogany dried figs and dried cherry in a syrupy meld. Palate was clean and fresh too - with a lifted feel that set this somewhat apart from the Aussie Ports. Flavours were not that complex, but very yummy, with some mineral, dark cherries, mahogany and chocolate moving into a long, gentle finish with more little smoke and mineral notes. Very classy. Not quite as deep and concentrated as some of my other experiences with this wine, but this had great elegance and a lively, nervy feel to it that I really enjoyed.

Great bottle! Deep dark inky ruby. Lovely sweet nose of black cherry and tobacco. This particular bottle was quite youthfull from ones I have had in the past. This bottle drank quite well for one hour, as long as my cigar lasted, a Bolivar Corona Gigante. Grahams is always the fruitiest and sweetest of the greatest ports.

Very slightly orange-tinged, dark cherry color. Nose of burnt sugar, cherry and alcohol. On the palate, this is still very fresh. but the alcohol is a bit out of balance throughout, despite the decent depth. Youthful and fruity, almost like a nice ruby, but also showing some complexity, with hints of cherry, licorice, and grape juice. Faint tannins lend pleasant tobacco and herbal tea undertones, but persistent sour pomegranate and prune flavors detract a bit. Much life ahead of this, but I'll gladly try another bottle soon.

Drank at the Ritz. I preferred this the last two times I had it, and I would add that the 1980 is probably drinking a bit better at the moment. Still, a lovely wine, with a nose redolent with dried grapes, prunes and plums with a nice layering of toasted walnuts. Very sumptuous and rich, like sinking into a deep pile carpet, but also so very fresh. I got the same sense of freshness on the palate, lots of fresh acidity along with more dried grapes, figs and, especially towards the finish, sweet preserved plums. Lots of structure here, almost grippy. I think the one thing that I felt was lacking in the wine was a sense of expansiveness. It had lovely flavours that curled, smoke-like, in the mouth, but was a little linear somehow, a bit lacking at the edges of the palate. Otherwise, really nice.

Two layers of foil. Bottom third of cork (which was quite deteriorated) broke off as I was opening. Had to push in, and then filter through a tea strainer while decanting.
Good finish, candied cherry, smoke. I found this lighter than I expected, and not as rich or as flavor dense as I would have liked.

Although we had no trouble drinking this up, and it was very good indeed, I was hoping for something with a little more concentration and intensity. Didn't help that we'd already had a lot of good wine with the Thanksgiving meal, we were all a little done in by the time we got to the port and cheese. We didn't finish it, and I was able to enjoy the remainder for a couple more days. Before serving, stored upright for a day and then decanted several hours before drinking.

Drank at the Ritz Carlton with a rather sub-standard cheese platter. Thankfully the wine was superb. Really rich, complex nose of leather, rubber, hints of a warm brambly thicket bush on a hot day, dried figs and some well polished mahogany. If it makes any sense at all, the nose was really warm and inviting, like sinking into a plush carpet in front of a fireplace, all sorts of dark, inviting layers of smells. Still though, I got a sense that there was still quite a bit locked up in there that would develop in the years to come. Much the same on the palate, which was super-fresh and wonderfully bright, with the rich flavours flowing through the mouth on a river of clean, round acid and the finest grained tannins that gave it great poise and structure. This wine was so alive yet beautifully delineated, with rich berry and fig flavours along with woody notes with a touch of savoury cigar smoke. Again, I got a sense that there was quite a bit more waiting to emerged. Finally, a long, long finish, with a bed of dried red fruits floating along the tongue. This was especially lovely with blue cheese.

Talula's Table (Kenneth Square): The fill was into the neck and the cork was sound. A murky purplish-red core, with a hint of amber at the edge. Booze Monstrous 6 O'Clock tasting (Equinox, Singapore): Dark red core with a lightening, slightly brickish rim. So good on the nose! Layered with prune, chocolate, vanila, earth, a hint of nuts and leather and whiffs of cigar smoke. So very different in character from the blockbuster and extremely primary 2003. The palate was dense and rich, but showed beautiful balance, with a fresh vibrancy being a great counterpoint to the lush, chocolatey flavours all the way to the long, lingering finish of cigar and wood. Surprisingly youthful for a wine hitting its 25th year, very fine indeed.

from 375 in Frisco this was steve c.'s bottle sampled over 24 hrs. Color looking young, dark burgundy with 3mm brake & 1mm clear. Plum and dark red fruit with sweetens on the nose. The taste is not as sweet as the aromatics suggest fairly monolithic in flavor profile but a nice balanced taste. The finish is a little angular and not particularly long but clean with a touch of alcohol. This could still be young and may develop more secondary complexities with some age than again it may not.

The color was very much that of a 25 year old port, but the palate was curiously young and disjointed. Not as sweet as other examples I've had. Terrific material and fruit, but this bottle could have used more time to come together. Very consistent with my impression of a bottle from a completely different source drunk a month ago. Still some patience required for peak enjoyment.

Decanted in the morning to try in the evening. Moderately dark with a thin tawny meniscus. Right out of the bottle, this filled the room with plummy perfume. When eventually tasted, still had strong fruit aromas but definitely had developed a spirity side that stuck out. Over time this integrated, and the nose was infused with a complex, higher pitched floral tone. Medium weight for vintage port, great intensity of fruit, nice acidity, and a healthy dose of tannin in the finish. I don't know the provenance of this bottle, but overall, very, very good with the biggest problem being its slight youthful disjointedness and at least 10 more years of structure to resolve. Impressively vigorous, showed much younger than the last bottle over a year ago. Amazing that it is still available at a lower price than current release Graham-why not get a 20 year head start if bottles are in such good shape?

Decanted 8 hours, last glass drunk the following evening. Good garnet-red color with a bit of wateriness at the rim. No notes from the first evening. I just remember being a little disappointed that it was good but not great. The last glass left in the decanter, drunk the following evening, had a beautiful nose of tobacco, flowers, sweet spices and cherries. On the palate the wine seems mature, with flavors of coffee, tar, cassis, and cocoa. Everything is well integrated, the tannins and alcohol are resolved. The finish is quite long with no bitterness or heat. All in all a very good port.

Dark red. The nose has cinnamon, earth, and dried fruits with a "dark" feel to it. A little alcohol shows on the nose too. On the palate the wine is medium weight, spicy, and sweet. Seemed a bit thin upon opening and decanting. Very little sediment. First glass seemed very tight and had a strong taste of alcohol. After sitting in the decanter for a while the nose opened up, and the alcohol really integrated, and the finish really seemed to lengthen.
After around four hours in the decanter, it was really at it's best - open for business and very nice. If you have the time, I would recommend decanting around that amount of time, if not a bit longer, and enjoying for the next couple hours after that.

The palate is rich, sticky, unctuous, soft, ripe red fruit, a little spice but I like a little more than this wine is giving. Acidity is still there but the finish is not as fresh as I like either.

Same score/notes and previously... but can highly recommend the sediment for cooking. Tried tonight with steak and chilli con carne. Added a wonderful richness, reminded me of the impact of the marrow from Osso Bucco. Grahams seems particularly good for cooking due to the sweetness. Drank the port afterwards with 2yr aged Gouda cheese. I think this will be a cracking vintage of Grahams in another ~10yrs - very good value, worth seeking out more cases.

Decanted a day ahead of time, it was the right thing to do. Had a few sips right after opening and 4-5 hours later and it wasn't quite itself yet. Put it back in the bottle and shared w friends later in the day, everyone seemed to love it.

This bottle of 1983 Graham Vintage Port was outstanding. Decanted and let sit for four hours. Ruby red in color, great fruit, & pipe tobacco smell. This one is a real keeper!

The bouquet offered up notes of very ripe black fruits, spice, tobacco and wet asphalt. Medium to full bodied on the palate, with good fruit, fine concentration and a long, warm finish.

Fill was into the neck; the cork was soaked through, but came out easily enough. A mature appearance, with some amber at the edge. A stunning bouquet, offering up powerful notes of ripe figs, prunes and tarry asphalt. Full-bodied on the palate, with loads of fruit, great richness, and a long and complex finish.

Nice, complex finish. On the second day this gained weight and was full bodied, rich, and sweet. The alcohol was completely integrated with a smooth seamless finish. 50 + 5 + 12 + 17 + 8
