Nose of red and black cherry fruit, currants, and allspice, same on the palate, big body, slightly fruit forward, needs 2 years to peak, signs of elegance, and a long finish.

Uncork the bottle 1 hour in advance. This is definitely a good wine, no doubt. Tasting note is unnecessary. This drinking nice now. Longer Decanted time will be perfect.

There seems to be two schools of thought among recent reviewers here. I personally think it's in a good spot at the moment; fruit forward, pencil shavings, subtle tobacco notes, nicely balanced/structured. Might get better, sure, but good now too.

At CdB 2014 dinner in HK. Still quite dark purple, nose quite closed despite nearly 3 hours of decanting. Well made and healthy fruit but still seems overwhelmingly tannic on the finish and clearly needs more time. Not quite as elegant as I had hoped for. Give it 2-3 years before approaching again.

A beautiful wine, true to Graves. A nod to modernness but not offensively so. The fruit is ripe and fresh but the wine is overall elegant. If I were drinking this blind I would wonder if it were a right banker, or a Graves. Opened up with air, the last sips were the best. For me, these 2014s are drinking beautifully right now. Sure this will evolve for another 10-15 years but for my taste it is fresh, the fruit is rich and inviting at age ten. A beauty. Rating: 94 points.

Balanced and elegant nose. Graphite, blackberries and earthy spices on the medium-bodied palate. Gentle and polished with a touch of savoury note. Somewhat restrained in the mid-palate and finish which is supported by a bed of fine tannins. A few more years of developing might open up the phenolics more. 91-92 pts.

Lovely aromas of dark red fruits, mossy undergrowth and telltale gravelly scents lead to a youthful, red berried and black plum flavors that finish savory and nuanced.

Purchased recently at retail. Even stronger than the very nice bottle I had about a year ago from a different retailer. Very tightly knit and well focused with a great concentration of black over red fruit, soft tannins, and the start of some tertiary notes. It also showed cold ashes on the nose. I’ve heard about this but never experienced it for myself. Excellent presence on the palate with a very good finish. Decanted about an hour and a half, which was just right. This bottle was wonderful. This was ready to go. 13.5% ABV (great; distinctive/****/17.5/94)
My first 2014 Bdx! Many people wrote that the 2014's are getting ready now! Maybe - I don't have enough experience to copy that. I gave this 5 hours of air in a decanter. It reminded me on a 2020 Pommard Village wine I had a few days ago. Good expressions of the typical "modern" Bdx-fruit-style. Red berries, sweetness. There's that burnt sugar profile that makes me think that it's a little bit over-extracted. Tannins are polished but there's some bitterness in the background. Let's see what it will taste like in 5-10 years. Over all it's a nice wine and already pretty drinkable now but I expected more (freshness) 91 pts. Edit: left 1/3 in the bottle for three days and there is an evolution - primary notes soften, structure is very balanced. Promise for the future 92+
Deep ruby. A strange showing for this wine, it is cacophonous and seemingly out of sorts with aggressively savory aromas of tar and scorched earth sitting on top of the ripe black fruit notes. Better on the palate where it is at once juicy and poised but still kind of odd. Perhaps an off bottle, but no signs of any flaws.

Brought to a French-style bistro that advertised steak frites. The excessively thick sauce appeared to based in Dijon mustard, rather than cream, and it clashed with the wine. Marginal service also detracted from the experience.
Decanted and sipped slowly, with suitable hors d'oeuvres. Restrained perfume, remarkably so for the house style. Strong Cabernet Sauvignon markers, with blackberry top notes (Petit Verdot). Also featuring scorched earth and gravel.
Tight on the palate as well. It tastes like it smells. Medium plus acid, and medium, powdery tannins. It needed a much longer decant. Generally, a wasted bottle, given the poor food pairing, service, and the wine's overall reticence.
Based on this experience, recommend holding bottle for a few years. The wine packs tremendous substance, which it refused to yield. If drinking over the near term, recommend decanting for several hours. Likely to enter its drinking window after another decade. Improvement all but certain. 93-94...95?
Similar to previous notes. This held up very well on day #3, still showing so much structure and power, but also sweet dark fruit. This will still benefit from more time and remains a bit tightly-wound, but the quality is so apparent.

Coravin fun - Domaine de Chevalier rouge (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Really closed and slightly spirituous initially, with time and plenty of agitation starts to show some jubey blackcurrant, blueberry, plum, almost a little cherry, sweet spice, meaty underpin. In the mouth it's savoury, fleshy and juicy, fruit less delineated but bold, plentiful grippy, drying cedar tannins are, again, supporting the fruit. Long, balanced. Lovely with that little bit of time and agitation.

So much better on day 2. I recommend a vigorous double decant if you can. Lots of blue and black fruit with thick and plush tannins. A little rough right out of the bottle.

Noble and aristocratic bouquet in the nose. Very tasty, fresh, medium intensity, elegant and almost perfect balance. With present but very nice tannins. Quite long aftertaste. A great example for this classic year! And yes, 2014 might be not for all, for me it is! Maybe in 2-6 years on the peak, then potentially a 94-95 wine for me? I personally don't mind open another bottle soon...
375, aired in glass over 2 hours with a rib-eye. Nice nose to start, 45 mins in dulls down and alcohol took over. Cassis, raspberry, marzipan, oak, quite tannic. Small amount of fine sediment. Still too young, got two cases of 2018 and will certainly leave those for at least a decade. Drink 2026-2040+
Nose: Thick and rich earthy cassis; cigar box. Palate: plush cassis, woody and ripe dark raspberries; polished tannins, there's a thread of green tartness that runs throughout.

This seems to have come a long way. The fruit is there, but a bit withdrawn, there is quite a bit of power and it's very resonant and extended. This is definitely within its drinking window now, though will continue to develop. Comes across as quite serious and deep. Glad I've one more.
Very very good. My first bottle of 6. Classic Pessac-Leognan. Reminds me of Pape Clément. Just entering maturity but with at least a decade left. See this improving. Very curious about the 2015 I have.
Coravin fun - Domaine de Chevalier (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas of cedar, slight sandalwood, red cherry, plum, slight blackcurrant, sweet spice, touches of biscuit and slight alcohol prickle. Juicy, softly berried fruit with a little blackcurrant and plum in support, again tannins are drying but a little more coarsely textured than the 2013. Finishes with a not off-putting slight bitterness and a smidge of fresh herbs. Okay.

I opened 3 bottles to share with an old friend. '14 La Croix, '14 DdC, '15 Giscours. No notes, just impressions. All 3 were quite a pleasure to drink, although the '15 was noticeably less mature. Each had a distinctive character, easy to tell apart. The baby Ducru was rich, forward, and layered with secondary notes of embers and coffee. The Chevalier was earthy, savory - the most integrated and open of the 3, and my favorite of the night. The Giscours was elegant, balanced, nothing out of place, yet reserved and with no secondary elements. All great wines that are drinkable now and have a long future ahead.
From a single bottle purchased at retail. Decanted two hours. Quite a wine this one. This bottle was in its first maturity and already very approachable, showing sleek black cherry, undergrowth, and just the lightest kiss of unintegrated oak on the nose and the same on the palate. This is super now, but once the tannins resolve a bit, it’s gong to be even better—so I had better buy some! 13.5% ABV (great; distinctly above average; superior/****/17.5/93)

Nose rather muted after a splash decant and one night under VinVac. Blue fruit dominates the front end of the palate with some subtle black cherry on the finish. Great balance, but with below average length.

Aged enough to be better than anything in a few years of hindsight for young bordeaux. Could it be that bordeaux is now more to my liking in the cooler years? Hmmm…classic bordeaux with new tobacco, cedar laden, with excellent freshness and elegance. Drink with 90 minutes of air or hold. A gem from the ddc stable. Classique
Half bottle. Very elegant yet with lovely cedary blue and red fruit aromas, well oaked layered blue, black and red fruits depth and taffetas texture and excellent length. 13.5%. Lay down 10-20 years+.

Ten Vintages Haut Bailly vs Mission HB: Preamble: All wines tasted blind in 10 vintage flights (1994-2015). To every flight one random third wine from Pessac Leognan added (2x Haut Brion, 2x Smith, 2x Pape Clement, 1x Branon, 1x Luchy Halde, 1x Carmes, 1x Chevalier). All wines opened a few hours before consumption but no decanting.
Some findings: 1) Haut Bailly outperformed Mission (5 vs 4 wins, 92.5 vs 90.5 average). 2) Haut Bailly is a rather structured wine which seems to shine bright in ripe and warm vintages, without any form of excess ripeness or extraction. 3) When done right (05/15), Mission eclipses Haut Bailly with its depth and delineation , but several vintages showed a bit too ripe but especially with the alcohol not well masked (09/10). 4) Pessac wines usually need quite some air to open up. In this setting (no decanting), most wines needed a lot of swirling to fully open up and will need more cellar time. 5) The best wines today were Haut Bailly 09 (96pts) & 10 (95pts) and Mission 05 & 15 (95pts).
TN: On the nose a bit timid but the palate shows a good dark fruit core, minerailty. This is a fine, relatively harmonious and round wine but not overly complex. Good but nothing to write home about.
Decanting: This needed a bit of swirling to open up. Decanting would certainly help.

Opaque black purple with some red. The aroma is forté with some horse manure, blackberry, and decayed wet wood. In the mouth, it's still young and tannic. The tannins are tight. Give this one some time or lots of air with a splash decant.
Tasted again after recorked for 5 days. It's much better. I increased. the score by 2 points. Funky manure is gone and raspberry and blackberry come through more front and center. Tannins are also a little more open.

93/94. I aerated this for 6 hours and this is still opening. Has aromas of cherries, forest fruits and lead pencil. Its stylish well oaked silky medium bodied palate has lovely linear depth and freshness. Ends longish, fresh and tapering. 13.5%. Lay down 10-20 years easily.
Nowhere near ready for prime time. Decanted for a few hours but still very tight. Tannins very prominent and the nose muted I’ll sit on my other bottles for 5+ more years. The materials for a great wine are there, just not ready yet.
I need to stop popping any Bordeaux less than 15 year old. Deep luscious ruby core with subdued rims at its edges. Nose; black fruit, tobacco, pencil shavings & classic french oak. Palate; med body, mid-to-high acidity, firm initial dusty tannins. Decanted for 3 hours - opened up to some mocha & chocolate notes. The nose began to slowly resolve & soften but palate remains young & firm. Peak drinking period perhaps somewhere in 2027-2030. Too bad this is my only bottle

This is all Bordeaux already. Back in 2016, this is exactly what I was hoping for with the 2014 offerings, and If I would have known that I would be this close to target, I would have bought 4 cases of this at the rediculous release prices. Never the less, grabbed 8 bottles and now its 7.
This is medium bodied and its all about tobacco and smoke, with the perfect amount of fruit to make it a wine. The balance here is excellent and the lightness of the wine brings that cleansing sensation that makes Bordeaux so classy in stage one of maturity. Very ready to drink, but will get into the funk and chocolate with time. Drink or Hold
Tannic, needs food, great bouquet, 13.5% abv but drinks higher, medium to heavy body, not a great sipper as the tannin asserts itself, drank with rack of lamb, spinach pie and veggies, Cabernet needs more time, good stuff but could be better, maybe just needs more time but I suspect it will get heavier, would drink again.

This was decanted for 4 hrs and enjoyed over 3 hours after that. Like a couple of other 2014 Left Banks had over the last couple of months (Malescot and Cos D'Estournel), this was showing beautifully, and gives me further optimism for this Bordeaux vintage, which seems to convey terroir notes over fruit again and again. This '14 Chevalier conveyed strong tobacco notes (humidor, unlit cigar) from the get-go as well as some campfire smoke in the background along with reedy/brambly and mineral notes. More minerals on the palate seamlessly integrated with cassis, blueberry and dark cherry. Elegant, medium-bodied with refreshing acidity; it grew a bit richer with time in the decanter, and the tannins also crept up a bit after a few hrs. I actually liked it best after it was open for just 1-2 hrs, but this is a finely crafted, balanced, and elegant wine with a promising future, although it might close down soon I fear. If you have several, you should open one now with a short decant to enjoy the lovely balance of fruit and terroir notes. By no means a haunting, mysterious blockbuster like the '14 Cos, but instead just a balanced, inviting, and almost "complete" wine that really speaks of its place. Rating: 93+ (with real potential to improve)
Coravin fun - Domaine de Chevalier; 2/23/2022-3/6/2022 (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Slight baked black fruits, sweet spice, a little savoury underpin. with time a smidge of almost rhubarb and the fruit gets a bit of a lozenge quality. Nice nose. And this shows quite primary on the palate; black fruits baked by red berries (a little touch of strawberry here) with drying, persistent but fine textured tannins. All in balance. Really rather pleasant. Yum.
Third of 375s at 2 year intervals. Maybe this needs more time, but given the pedigree, this is either in a dumb stage or just overshot this classical vintage.
Medium body. Nose rather closed, just a hint of black fruit and no wood detected. Palate dominated by acidity, some fruit, low tannin and almost no oak treatment. Overall this bottle was closed down. I don't understand the high scores as I detected very little positive behind the wall of acidity. Hopefully is was just a bad bottle. Will wait several more years before trying again.

Although a modern styled Bordeaux - and a young one at that - I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy this. It's a bit polished, lacking any - discernible to me - soil signature, but that said it has nice balance, good depth, restrained / integrated oak & succulent fruit, which isn't too ripe - I think the vintage helped for my tastes. It's also reasonably priced by C.C. Bordeaux standards - I do wish they would get rid of Stéphane Derenoncourt and if they have to use a 'consultant' at all, pick a more classically leaning one. As it is, it's good, it will get better... Drink dates seem about right, just edging toward the start of its drinking window & enjoyable already with a long decant.

Deep blood red. Immediately impressive on the nose, with structured red and dark fruits. Deep cherry, blackberry liqueur, vanilla, and cedary oak. Intense and complex, which carries through on the palate, which offers quite a juicy red fruit character followed by firm but not unyielding tannins. This is drinking really well now but clearly has the stuffing to age further. Overall, this is an impressive effort that is worth the price to play.

Some years ago I gave this wine 93 points. It seemed to have improved a lot, and at the most recent tasting I would give it 95+. Subsequent years until and including 2018, but excluding 2017, seem to be better by about half a point per year (per 2 years re the 2018). Domaine de Chevalier almost always seem to be pretty well-liked by me and the prices seem reasonable.
Three hour slow ox. Very dark red purple. Lovely nose. Beautifully integrated in nose and on palate. Weighty in the mouth. Subdued fruit. Definite graphite, fennel overtones. Long finish. Lovely bottle. Should probably be decanted at this stage for it seems to be slowly waking and gaining complexity in the glass.

Bravo!
Deep red/purple-y in the glass. Upon opening, the nose is instantly impressive and mysterious: opacity and depth come to mind. There is no doubt about the quality of fruit that went into the bottle.
Decanted over 2 hours, the wine slowly started opening and just kept improving, assuredly would have still done so over many more hours. But it was already way too delicious to let sit, hoping it would reach another peak. So soft and elegant upon tasting, and there is no mistaking here: we are drinking from a special terroir. Black cherry reduction, blackberries with their stalk, some cassis, dense soil, a lick of cream amplifying the texture, chocolatey richness, a touch of charcoal and a hint of woodsiness that is almost invisible because of the wine's fine integration. Amplitude, balance, supple tannins even in youth... such control!
Silky mouthfeel, charming, generous while staying subtle... phenomenal with food, words cannot do it justice in this regard. Length is impressive - the wine takes its time and is in no rush. This vintage's potential as it ages is very intriguing, where is its ceiling?
This is a wine that rocks you in a chair and soothes you. Almost impossible to break down, because you hear its beautiful melody over any of the singular notes composing it. Bravo!

Young but very good Chevalier in a classical vintage which from what I have tasted shows a very nice homogeneity. Medium bodied but very well balanced, with smooth tanins, a nice acidity and a good length. The nose is still a bit muted, that displays aromas of red and black berries, cocoa and vanila (wood does not seem fully integrated). Hint of dryness on the finish. This should improve with a further aging. Very good value.
Much better than last time tasted. Dark purple with ruby rim. No sediment at all. Aroma of smoke, leather, stone, dark and red fruit. Flavor profile and mouthfeel quite lovely, similar to nose. Nice finish but eclipsed a bit by drying slightly puckering tannins even after several hours of air. Likely to be a classic chevalier in the future with potential in future of 94 or more. 92+ for now. Approachable but still holding a lot back. Hopefully will be a lot like the awesome 2005 in 5 years or so from now.
Toujours épaté par ce domaine. Beau vin raffiné et complexe. Terre, cuir, cerises, café, cèdre et chocolat. C`est soyeux et bien équilibré. Les tannins sont bien enrobés et la finales bien longue et persistante.

Increased the score from 92 to 93 since tasting this last time 2 years ago.
Quite reserved, tight and young at first with red cherries dominating the fruit spectrum.
After approx. 2 hours on the decanter the wine has transformed, adding weight. The bouquet displays wonderful blackberry fruit and some raspberry. Slightly earthy character to it with a lovely mix of liqourice, herbs, smoke and tobacco.
With air the palate also became more coherent. Medium-bodied with fine grained, but supple tannins. Delicious balancing acidity and a sense of symmetry of elements. Lovely dark fruit with a certain «Pessac austerity» to it (think pebbles). Great length.

Initially, muted nose & palate. Needed six hours of air for the fruit to emerge. Great balance, silky smooth & when the wine finally opened up flavors of blackberries, cassis & espresso. I don’t plan on revisiting until 2024.
Abundant velvety tannins frame a profile of red berries, fig, and cassis accented with mulling spices, black tea, and stone. The wine is nicely aromatic, has good balance and a lingering finish.
It has an appropriate level of extract so the wine doesn’t feel pushed beyond the fruit.

A bit hard and awkward. It took a few hours for the fruit to show properly. Has a red fruit profile. Tasted alongside the '15 - which was more open and inviting but similar profile. Am increasingly feeling this producer is priced a bit high for what it delivers, but am also thinking it may just need much more time than most other Chateaux - I remember reading how very long lived it is 91+pts.

Coravin fun - Domaine de Chevalier rouge; 8/4/2020-8/12/2020 (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas of blackcurrant, a kind of roasted berry biscuit note, cream, tiny touches of plum and black cherry, a little wetness here as well. On the palate it has medium plus intensity acidity, that roasted berry note is underpinning blackcurrant, plum and cream. Tannins are soft, silky, yielding, a little red currant. Very primary still. It's a bit 'elbows' on this tasting. I was expecting more I must confess.

-- decanted 30 min. before initial taste -- -- tasted non-blind over 2 to 3 hours --
NOSE: dark; earthy; smoldery; dark red fruits; brooding.
BODY: medium bodied; lots of fine particulate matter present.
TASTE: lightly tannic --- notably gentle for such a young Bdx.; typical 2014 approachability; oak noticeable, but not obtrusive/distracting/overdone. This was my third time with this wine, and I've loved it every time. It's alluring now, but I like the future even more. Thank goodness my remaining bottles are at off-site, because this is seriously difficult for me to keep my hands off of right now! Sleek, elegant, and powerful --- and without being light/thin/underripe. Understated excellence. Not a blockbuster, so unlikely to garner the highest of scores (even I prefer the soaring, rock-solid sky-scraper vintages), but don't get me wrong: this is *solidly* excellent. Drink Now through 2040, at least. Note to self: next bottle in 2029. Gut impression score: 94 - 95.

Wow, this is really coming to its own since it was first bottled. This Chateau is known to produce over acheiving wines on off vintages, and this dark horse prevails again. Very Ch Margaux like nose. Plenty of red, blue and dark fruits. A hint of integrated cream paving a nice mouthfeel. Finesse and damn tasty. I could drink this all day. Surprisingly open for business right now, yet will cellar for quite a while as well. More in the tank, but a great pleasure to experience today. Something for everyone. There is some nobility and its substance slowly unwinds. The release price was fairly reasonable as well. A classic Pessac-Leognan here and a fine example of Domaine de Chevalier on a somewhat discounted vintage.

Domaine de Chevalier vertical with Olivier Bernard (Le Cafe Descartes at the French Embassy): Medium expressive nose displaying pure black fruit with a hint of red, blackberry, crème de cassis, a hint of strawberry, licorice, mocha, roasted nuts, cedar and limestone. Very good concentration, nicely layered pure black fruit, fresh and silky, medium acidity, strong mineral, nicely integrated tannins and a medium long black and red fruit driven finish. There is a hint of bitterness that clips the finish. This is a classic Grave. For me, the 16 Junior, i.e. very similar in style but not as expressive and concentrated.

Domaine de Chevalier Tasting (French Embassy): Not as opulent or expressive as the 2016 but shows a lot of cherry, currants, with bell pepper, anise, graphite, scorched earth. Strong tannins frame the wine well, moderate acidity. The currant and cherry fruit mixes with anise, charcoal, black tea and cocoa elements. This is quite intense and could use five years to unwind at least.

Coravin fun - Domaine de Chevalier rouge (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas; the wine shows a little closed in initially but with agitation it shows cedar, jubey red and black berry and currant, plum, sweet spice. 3ish hr decant + 2 hr in open bottle. Nose: monster nose of fruit, really bursting and beautiful — almost perfumed? If it tasted like the nose i would buy a lot. Palate: not giving away much on first sips besides oak and an initial burst of fruit that fades quickly. Coming together a little more as this glass continues: black cherry, nice acidity, finish going longer, still oaky. Feels like this is on the precipice of being great to me but not quite there. A lot of fruit and oak — is this “modern” Bordeaux?

Side-by-side with the '70 and the '00, they all offered some of the same classic Dm de Chevalier notes: savory and heavily treble clef in both bouquet and palate, with cherries and plums, earth, sweet underbrush, smoke, tobacco, and some sharpness. The 2014 is the most transparent of the three wines, similar to the 2009 but less dense; they really seem to have perfected their technique leaving me eager to try the '15, '16, and '18 in due time. This '14 made for a great comparison to its two older brothers and is fantastic today for its well-proportioned fruit and anise, but it will be even better 2025-2040.

Decanted for about 10 hours, this helped open up what would otherwise surely have been quite closed down. Red fruit, elegant, a hint of spice and smoke, not super concentrated. Very nice and shows some pedigree. I recommend holding for a few more years though - really not ready for prime time.

Very closed upon opening, very structured, but not giving a lot in neither nose nor mouth. Dark berries, spicy, mineral but not a balanced top bordeaux. After an hour and especially day 2 a completely different wine. Casis, cigarbox, mint and really nicely balanced and clearly bordeaux. Wait.

PnP over two days. Beautiful inky colour with a thin garnet meniscus. Nose shows finely polished notes of cassis and blackberry with a good deal of youthful oak. The latter had settled and integrated somewhat by day two. Palate is lightly structured, cool and mineral, with refreshing acidity. Drinking well enough now in my opinion, though a couple of additional years may help to integrate the oak.

GREAT wine and price point. Visited winery last month and tasted 17 and 18 from barrel. Great experience. Sorry no notes but suffice it to say find it, buy it, keep it. Outstanding wine.

As experted very primary. The nose is superb but it will need some time to sort out the harmony in the mouth. Needs another 5 years but is lovely for what it is at the moment.

Opened the bottle at 1 PM and left 2 hours (in bottle) before 4 hour on decanter. Great bottle paired with Steak (Entrecote of beef).
The color is ruby and quite dense (semi-opaque). Slight haze. Bottle shows tiny amount of sediment.
Really enjoyed the deep dark berries (black berry and black currant) on the nose. Some toastyness and stonyness in the background as well. After another hour some salinity enters the nose.
Such a well balanced wine and really nothing out of place. Enough acidity and ample fruit. However, I do miss some complexity and top notes to completely wow me over.
The wine shows great promise and I find this to be a good QPR. Surprised over the approachability of this wine although I am sure that those leaving it for (at least) another 5 or 6 years will be handsomely rewarded and the wine will probably drink well for at least 20+. My analysis is that the depth and complexity is somewhat hidden at the current time and I believe that this wine will be a 94+ point wine in 10-15 years. Rated 93 points due to potential, although I would rate it 92 based on current drinking pleasure.

Tasted over four days, alongside the same vintage Grand-Puy-Lacoste. Wonderfully appealing, bordering on seductive, bouquet of blue and purple berries, crushed flower petals, herbal essences, and knee-weakening crème de cassis. All these elements reached their apogee on the third and fourth days.
The wine features a blue and purple berry energy, which brings to mind such descriptors as pure, passionate, and precise, in that order. These elements, untrammeled by excessive oak treatment, shine from attack through seductive finish.
Lingered over a few, for all intents and purposes, wasted ounces on the first day, as the wine featured vivacious profundity on the second. The third and fourth days featured a wine as complete, rounded, and balanced as imaginable given the vintage.
This packs the substance to improve, on account of its lifted precision, as opposed to power. Indeed, every sip finished with floral and tangy berry top notes. Tasting it alongside the GPL, which this outpaced, made for a fascinating experience. It holds the top tier of 2014 Bordeaux that I have tasted, along with Montrose and Léoville Barton. Likely to evolve and last through 2040+. 94-95.
Very good. Very dark colour, intense black fruit and coffee nose. This is a great mix of sweet dark fruit with pessac charcoal/smoke and light oak - much less new oak than 05/09/10/12 versions. Approachable, but will develop into something better and be a 20+ year wine. 93+

Opened at 2pm & decanted. Back into the btl at 4pm with cork out. Drinking with "the kids" between 6 - 9pm. Overall I found this balanced & restrained with most of its depth and corresponding intrigue submerged right now. Semi opaque ruby color. Smokey dark fruit nose with a hint of tobacco. The palate is mostly savory with earth, mineral and herb notes dominating a measure of dark fruit. Again a hint of tobacco. This is youthfully tight and in need of a good 10 years plus before it really struts its stuff and we know for sure what we bought. Alc 13.5%. This was an exploratory single bottle from my first grandson's birthyear. Otherwise, I'd never touch a Bordeaux younger than 2005 for myself. If I buy more of these it will be on faith as this didn't wow me tonight like it has other tasters here. For me, 90-92pts, right now.
Tasted next to 2017. Quite intense roasted coffee notes on the nose, dark fruit, spices, tobacco. On the palate a bit more depth and concentration maybe, nice tannic grip, good acidity. Mineral and persistent finish. 92-93+

Decanted and followed over 5 hours. Enjoyable throughout but after 4 hours it really filled out. Timed perfectly, it was at its best along with my dinner of steak, roasted sweet potatoes, mixed greens and asparagus. Nice balance between less ripe Cabernet and ripe Merlot. Modestly spiced, with a subtle smoky element. Finishes medium long.

Dark berries, dense, very present tannin that requires some more years to get smooth, fresh, good concentration and long finish, everything in perfect balance, but still too young, better wait 6 or more years, 92-94+.

Tasted over three days. Expected restrained power, found inflection changing finesse. Uniquely styled, for the producer, and place. The wine conveyed Margaux-like perfume of blackcurrant, blackberry, pepper garden, black earth, and crushed granite, along with blue fruit elements that danced gracefully between these classic notes, perhaps Petit Verdot imparted. Cabernet Sauvignon markers prominent on the palate, as on the bouquet, with Merlot making its presence known by seductive textures that played beautifully with the intruiguing blue essence. The charred earth notes typical of Pessac-Leognan in particular were bathed in this blueness. Superbly balanced and deceptively strutured.
The wine's open-knit qualities delivered elegance from the outset, and also conveyed an impression of 'hidden' textural essences. The closest comparison that comes to mind to is the 2010 d'Issan. What of the absence of brawny power? Who knows, and nothing about it suggested latent power. If scoring the wine on its full presence, 93 points. The hidden elements though open the door to an additional point. This will be interesting to follow over the next five to seven years, perhaps ten. It should last through 2032+. 93-94.
Full body. Nose of violets and blackberries. Very plush. Soft, round sweet tannins. Still very primary; juicy. Dark fruit predominates with a nice underlying minerality. Needs time to balance out. A baby.

Coravin fun - New Arrivals and Woollongong choices (Kennards, Waterloo): From Coravin. Juicy red and black cherry and currant. Cedar and spice and slight cocoa powder. More of the same on the palate. Still la little austere with talc textured, slightly drying tannins backs the juicy, creamy textured fruit and oak flavours. Long. Time.

-- popped and poured -- -- tasted a single pour non-blind over approx. 30 – 40 minutes --
Nose was fairly tight, showing some deep cherry aromas and other "earthy dark" elements. Medium bodied on the palate, where it presents with slightly smoky red/purple berries, medium-light oak, and a hint of leathery funk. Alc. not noticeable; not tannic, but it does seem very tightly coiled and packed; very nice; needs time; will buy some for the cellar.

During a 2014 walkabout arrivage tasting, no tasting notes given, only selective comments. In general I did not walk away excited after sampling ca 40 bottles (to be fair, the big weights were all missing). In a nutshell, while the vintage is pleasant and fresh, it is often too lean, lacking charm and aromatic depth. Still, Bordeaux being Bordeaux the wines are not made for immediate drinking so, I don't see the point in buying them now. There will be plenty of them in the market in 2024 when they reached their peak. TN: This was a decent wine, racy acidity and structure. good fruit core. Needs time. Good but not up there with the top vintages.

Um, yeah - this is the bomb. Right out of the bottle...Creamy cassis, silky tannin. 65% Cab, 30% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot. A terrific example of why Bordeaux is so coveted around the globe. A blend that is greater than the sum of its parts. As the Cab starts to peak, the Merlot and PV round it out and lend sophistication and finesse. Fine wine to be sure...

Very successful vintage for Domaine de Chevalier. This is much more accessible and well put together than the 2012, for example. It's silky and finessed from the very first sip, and has a whole lot going on, running the spectrum from Graves-typical smoldering charcoal aromas to a stony minerality and botanical flavors that are almost Barolo-like. Deep and black-fruited while still having sharp focus. The structure flexes its muscle with time in the glass, eventually showing some fierce screeching tannin that wasn't even hinted at in that soft, supple first glass.
Lovely nose of dark red and black fruits and smoky gravel. Medium-bodied and quite opulent with a bit of St. Emilion bitter chocolate along with notes of gravel and green pepper. Good spicy complexity on the finish with smooth tannins and a nice mineral lick. A bit plusher than I remember but it's been open for 2 hours. 91+

This is the first wine I have had the opportunity of tasting from the 2014 vintage and on the basis of my finding pleased as punch to have invested in numerous wines. Given the advice of some critics suggesting this wine is somewhat backward I brought this out of my cellar a day before and decanted the wine a full 2 hours before dinner. The nose itself appeared a little reticent initially but with airing graphite, sage and bay leaf came to the fore. The wine is beautifully balanced with a gorgeous silky mouthfeel. Many wine critics have suggested the 2014's will be ready to go from day one without necessarily closing down. And on evidence of my tasting I would have to agree but would recommend decanting... A beauty.... also outstanding quality to price ratio for an outstanding Graves.
Tantalising nose of dark berries, cigar box, chocolate, smoke and florals. Generous fruit, minerals and spices on the well balanced palate. The tasting notes below convinced me to open a bottle and I'm happy I did. First 2014 Bordeaux for me. If this can be expected from the vintage, then I'm glad I bought enough. This was 42 francs en primeur and one of the best values in Bordeaux I've seen in a long time. Strong buy recommendation.

Eucalyptus and tar. Pleasant tannins could be a little softer but it's drinking pretty well early... which for me is a shame because I was hoping for a long 2014 (my son's birth year) Bordeaux to buy a case or two that will be truly special in about 18 years... suggestions appreciated. Which do you think is the standout chateau of this vintage?
Eucalyptus, plum, and floral notes on the nose. On the palate, black cherry, currant, blackberry, and notes of savory spice and earth, with moderate tannins and good acidity on the medium finish. This was closed down at first, and became noticeably more integrated and more interesting over about an hour and a half. This is very young, and it should improve for several years. Excellent value at about $50.

Larger "Arrivage" tasting. This is a crowd-pleaser. Everybody liked it, good balance, sweet and round tannins, nice red and black fruit profile. Very good balance, highly approachable. You could quaff liters of it... Why not a higher score? Contrary to some of the other testers here, I don't think it was very complex and especially had absolutely no long finish , it disappeared quite quickly. But probably I got that impression because I tasted it right after tasting some first growths. 91/93

Wow! Domaine de Chevalier is usually one of my go-to Graves, but they are sometimes a little unapproachable in their youth... not here. I would have loved to finish the bottle on the spot with a steak. Super complex and perfumed aromatics of black cherries, cassis, graphite, lead pencil, tobacco, some leather, but also some flowers and herbs. It's medium-full bodied with fantastic mid-palate persistance, medium-high acidity and medium-high tannin that is super silky. Excellent length. One of the absolute stars of the vintage. I love the balance, elegance and super classic impression here. (95 - 97p.)

Purchased recently at retail. Even stronger than the very nice bottle I had about a year ago from a different retailer. Very tightly knit and well focused with a great concentration of black over red fruit, soft tannins, and the start of some tertiary notes. It also showed cold ashes on the nose.

This seems to have come a long way. The fruit is there, but a bit withdrawn, there is quite a bit of power and it's very resonant and extended. This is definitely within its drinking window now, though will continue to develop. Comes across as quite serious and deep. Glad I've one more.

Very very good. My first bottle of 6. Classic Pessac-Leognan. Reminds me of Pape Clément. Just entering maturity but with at least a decade left. See this improving. Very curious about the 2015 I have.

Classique

Ten Vintages Haut Bailly vs Mission HB: Preamble: All wines tasted blind in 10 vintage flights (1994-2015). To every flight one random third wine from Pessac Leognan added (2x Haut Brion, 2x Smith, 2x Pape Clement, 1x Branon, 1x Luchy Halde, 1x Carmes, 1x Chevalier). All wines opened a few hours before consumption but no decanting.
Some findings:
1) Haut Bailly outperformed Mission (5 vs 4 wins, 92.5 vs 90.5 average).

Subsequent years until and including 2018, but excluding 2017, seem to be better by about half a point per year (per 2 years re the 2018). Domaine de Chevalier almost always seem to be pretty well-liked by me and the prices seem reasonable.

Bravo!
~
Cabernet Sauvignon (65%) - Merlot (30%) - Petit Verdot (5%)
13.5% ABV

Nice finish but eclipsed a bit by drying slightly puckering tannins even after several hours of air. Likely to be a classic chevalier in the future with potential in future of 94 or more. 92+ for now. Approachable but still holding a lot back.

BODY: medium bodied; lots of fine particulate matter present.
TASTE: lightly tannic --- notably gentle for such a young Bdx.; typical 2014 approachability; oak noticeable, but not obtrusive/distracting/overdone.

Men måtte bare...

I would have loved to finish the bottle on the spot with a steak. It's medium-full bodied with fantastic mid-palate persistance, medium-high acidity and medium-high tannin that is super silky. Excellent length. One of the absolute stars of the vintage.
