Very delicate aromas, usual smorgasbord on the nose of pencil shavings, tobacco and leather after a little bit of barnyard. Light ruby in colour. Cork required delicate skill and a very gentle whirl out! Tried a little without decanting and then carried on and decanted expecting a deterioration - my word, it got better and better. A beautifully long finish - despite being in decline!
Next day - I was not expecting much, but it tasted even better. Shame there wasn’t much left by this point.

Pretty classic montrose. Leather and pepper and tart red fruit. Definitely peaked and on a slow graceful decline, still a really lovely wine, but it doesn’t take you on a wild ride like a younger one.

Chateau Montrose: '78, '96, '05 & Champagne (Paris Dining Club, Mpls, MN): Dark red color, 8mm transition to clear. Drank 2 glasses over 2 hours. This showed really well out of the gate with an expressive nose featuring tobacco leaf, loam and soil, cigar ash, leather and more subtle red fruits. The palate is medium plus bodied, tobacco and cigar, funk, leather, tar, red fruits with cassis under tones, poised and soft with good length. The tannins and round and integrating. After an hour the tobacco notes really became dominant and a little of the charm faded, but this was really in a good place. I see no reason to worry about well stored bottles for a decade.

Classic old Bordeaux, some. Cedar, green pepper, plums. Palate is fully resolved, earthy, red fruits, a bitter finish but in great shape.
