Dark Vosne spices and bright acidity stand out on Day 1; just barely secondary character; too young & tight. Day 2: opened up beautifully, needs several years yet. 92+ on 2nd day.

Corkaged at Crown Shy in New York City, we began the evening with a bottle we’ve been wanting to try for a long time: Clos de Tart’s 1999 vintage. Prior to even tasting the wine, a nose dominated by a balance of maraschino cherries and game/meatiness was alluring. As the bottle remained open, the nose developed notes of anise, mushrooms and tobacco, but that cherry / meatiness remained prominent and robust. The palate felt a tad bit unbalanced as the upfront was dominated by tart red cherries and a hint of cranberries before the mid-palate introduced a plentitude of earthiness, forest floor, meat and a hint of oak, seemingly dominating the fruit that was initially present. With chewy tannins and great acidity, this wine is still going to develop, but truly only reached its peak about an hour and a half after being opened on the night.

Opened 5 hours in advance. Ruby with minimal fading. Sexy aromas of smoke, spice, ripe fruit, soil, and a good dose of oak. Medium bodied. Complex melange of black fruit, cranberry, and herbs. The wood is not that obvious on the palate. Great acidity, very saline, and not particularly tannic. Fantastic aromatics but not quite as exciting in the mouth. Excellent and possibly more with additional time.

{Purchased on release, #1 of 6, stored in professional storage, perfect fill, sound cork} Still somewhat tight. Huge morello cherry fruit, some liquerishness that I often find in Clos de Tart, smoky rich complete velvety fruit, over an hour in glass it developed but would either do a serious (2 hour) decant now or wait another 5 years. Classy, classic Clos de Tart, probably 95-96 potential although "only" 93 pts tonight. Could rival the unworldly 1985 in time. Weightless in the mouth with huge palate presence even though not fully uncoiled.

(Clos du Tart Clos du Tart) Herbs, spices and some caramel on the nose too. Mature flavours on the palate, some brown sugar though imature tannins. There is less than perfect balance, but good length. Not a great bottle given the stature of the vintage.
(Clos du Tart Clos du Tart) Medium, medium-plus ruby-red core edging to a salmon pink. A nose of minerals edged with soft red fruit and the faintest trace of vanilla. The palate is wide but not fat, plenty of dry and grainy tannin and a real impression of expansion. Very long - again in a mineral rather than fruity sense. A young and impressive wine of quite some potential.
(Clos de Tart) This was closed for business. Nose of brambly fruit and dried leaves. Some slightly gamey mushroom notes. After a while there started to emerge some slight berry fruit and hints of blueberry but never really got there. Tremendous palate, with epic concentration but firmly structured. Great inner mouth aromas but forget about this for five years at least. Very sneaky finish that hints at the greatness to come.
(Domaine du Clos de Tart Clos de Tart) Light strawberry nose; strawberry, sous bois palate with good concentration, acidity and balance; long finish 92+ pts.
(Domaine du Clos de Tart Clos de Tart) Rich berry, cherry nose; complex, tart cherry, raspberry, black cherry, sous bois palate; long finish

Aromatically quite rustic. Lacks purity or any precision. Just completely uninspired.
