2011 DRC Tasting (Paris, France): Even deeper in color than the Echezeaux. Fuller dark fruit and spice on the nose. Not much floral, just dense and primary. Big and up front on the attack. Fresh, almost effervescent in the mouth. Loads of red and black fruit, spice and pleasant stem note. Quite plush. More stems come out with time in the glass. Full and powerful, yet smooth finish.
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 2011 (St. Gallen): Powerful nose, dark berries, spices, aromatic herbs - even more so with time - very special. On the palate it shows immediately another presence, profound, dark, ferrous, saline. Very powerful, with subtle tannins.
Third in line of tonight’s six DRC 2011’s on the table. The wines had been decanted for 60 minutes prior to being poured. The Grands Échezéaux is a step up this year from the Échézeaux. This also takes a while to open up, although shorter than the Échezéaux. Once it does the nose shows lovely spice and flowers, stony minerals, some gunpower smoke and smoked meaty undertones. On the palate this is a quite big and muscular wine. Fat creamy oily fruit with red & black berries, cherries, pomegranate & cranberries with a nice peppery finish. Very good structured and elegant, with great length and good clean acidity. Keeps growing in the glass all evening, and the second pour really starts to open up the next dimension. Lovely, and with a superb future ahead.
