  • This was opened with much trepidation given it's age and despite the ullage being above the shoulder.

On the nose, an immense bouquet of abundant fresh yet ripe red fruits, with numerous hints of mushrooms, leather and floral notes - the list goes on and on.

The palate exhibited a perfect path of evolution over it's 68 years of aging - harmony and a beautifully integrated/resolved structure came to mind. It held up all the way for the first 1.5 hours which was nothing short of impressive for a wine of this age.

In short, a truly Stunning wine that served a hugely pleasant surprise for those of us who were fortunate enough to experience it.

  • 30x 1955 & 1961 (mostly Bdx): Tasted single blind. Taste-off between the 1955 (rated 94 pts) and the 1961 (rated 91 pts). The 1955 jumped out of the glass with a tantalizing firework of aromas but didn’t show the same verve and not that clean on the palate. The 1961 almost look liked a port wine and showed quite oxidative and almost dead. But with a lot of swirling and air both wines resurrected and got better with every minute in the glass and my score kept climbing higher. In the end both were very good wines but without exceptionalism. The only question left is, what would have been possible if we would have time to follow the wine over more than just 20 minutes.

TN: Very inviting, fine and medium+ expressive nose with ripe red fruit, meaty notes, smoke and minerality. Always evolving and very intriguing. Didn’t need much time. On the palate it showed not very harmonious at first with a not really well-integrated acidity and an astringent finish. The longer it sit in the glass, the better and more balanced and harmonious it got. Fresh, ripe red berries, some dried fruit, leather, tobacco, stems, meaty notes, melted tannin structure but with good tension, very light and slightly creamy texture and with the last sips a balanced and medium length finish. In the best moments this was a 95+ pts experience. While the depth was 95+ material, the precision was not.

Decanting: Not decanted but this bottle would have needed at a solid hour.

  • Grand 1961 vs 1955 vintage tasting (Fribourg): Big 1961 vs 1955 tastings including 10 direct match-ups and 11 individual wines from 1961. The tasting was conducted in flights of 4, single-blind and with no previous decant with all bottles opened 1h prior to start. The line-up was dominated by Bordeaux reds, but also included 5 Sauternes, 1 Champagne, 3 Burgundy reds and 1 Ribera del Duero. The following observations are worth mentioning: i) 1961 generally came across as a better vintage today than 1955, ii) the performance correlated with the 1855 classification, iii) The most outstanding wines were outside of the Bordeaux reds with Veuve Clicquot Rosé '61, Vega Sicilia Unico '61 (both 97) and La Tour Blanche '61 (96) worth mentioning, iv) Top-performing Bordeaux was Margaux (95) in 1961 and Mouton in 1955. List of wines included in the tasting story.

    Tasting note:
Black coffee, espresso, freshly roasted coffee beans - the whole array of coffee-related notes. Also leather, horse stable with a fruit that appeared dark given all the overlaps from the aging notes but did have some red berry fruit shining through every now and then. The palate also shows nice aging aromas, but with a clearly red fruit profile. That said the structure has evaporated with age leaving too much acidity and a thin texture. An amazing nose that triggered lots of Oh‘s and Ah‘s in the crowd, but it pains me to say not much pleasure to drink.
