  • Jon's 50th Birthday Party: PnP. Ripe black fruit with lots of spice and some smokey notes. Lovely high class mouthfeel, but feels a bit disjointed right now and needs more time to settle down and integrate.

  • 2022 Excellent Burgundy Adventure; 10/31/2022-11/6/2022 (Burgundy): Medium expressive super complex nose displaying very ripe black fruit, blackberry jam, black berry liqueur, licorice, Asian spice, strong stem, cinnamon, liquid smoke, ash and crushed rocks. Excellent concentration, exqusitley layered very ripe black fruit, silky and airy, perfect amount of acidity, strong rocky mineral, and a seamless long very ripe black fruit driven finish with stem and licorice at the end. There is sur maturite that is a detraction for me. Even for a label drinker that I am, this is hard to overcome. I am hoping this will transform as sous bois or lessen with time.

  • Very great wine but for one time, not at same level of the fabulous Richebourg 2018

  • Complete DRC Vintage Horizontals 2017 vs 2018: Since Covid didn’t allow for a proper arrivage tasting last year, we tasted the 2017s in direct taste-offs vs their 2018 counterparts this year. All bottles were opened a few hours earlier, not decanted but we got enough time to follow each wine over 45+ minutes in the glass which allowed for proper aeration and analysis. A few observations: 1) The 2017s are disarmingly easy to drink, charming, soft and open. 2) The 2018 show more depth but will need more time to flesh out, open up and become rounder. 3) Best ever Cortons. Slowly but surely they grow into their allocation (not market) price. 4) The showstopping RSVs edge out the Richebourgs with the purest fruit expression vs raw and today a bit unintegrated power. 5) The La Taches and RCs are playing in their own category in terms of complexity but the RCs are a bit closed. 6) The Montrachets are fabulous with a sharp, complex and complete 2017 as a consensus WOTN and a 2018 which is a bit broader but still amazing.

TN: Ever changing nose and palate full of spices, gingerbread, red, dark, blue berries, burnt sugar, herbs, crushed rocks, meaty notes. Without wuestion the most complex red wine of the night (the RCs were rather muted) paired with incredible precision and all embedded in a ultra luxurious structure. Yes, there is a lot of power and the wine will need time to flesh out and become lighter but it is so darn good already and you can sense the greatness with every sip and sniff. Just wow.

  • 2018 red Burgundy tasting (Freiheit Vinothek, Ulm, Germany): *** all wines decanted 1-2h before and tasted double blind ***
    Glass: Zalto Burgundy
Announced as the “Pizza wine”, served in parallel to some Pizza after the tasting.
Clear, deep ruby color. Very fine, airy nose, floral notes, red fruit, herbs. Very sexy and complex.
On the palate very fine fruit. Pure elegance and balance. Wonderful tension. Juicy. Very long. Yes, it drinks beautifully now, but to me it screams also with every sip: Give me some more years to be truly great… 94-95++
What a fantastic and unique experience to taste two vintages of this wine within a month. Is it really “to die for”? No, but considered tonight’s great lineup and my double-blind impression, it is for me for sure one of the greatest red burgundy.
