Glass poured from standard bottle at Essential by Christophe. Toasty, deep and complex nose. Some fruit (bruised apple, pear) but most tertiary notes, brioche dominant. The palate is a brioche, citrus, green apple, slight citrus on the finish. Lovely, though generally terrible QPR if I’m being honest. Great wine, but for the price, there are so many great Champagnes.

My Note 18 months ago said wait 5 years, wish I listened. This is way too young, very primary. Lemon curd, crisp apple and still edges of razors. The MV at 15 years of age shine, hold!!!

Still a baby. A bit tight upon opening. 146 wines from 11 vintages from 2000-2013. Rich. Yellow apple. Hazelnut. Great tension and weight. Balance. Perfect with Taneda omakase.

Lighter on its feet than the 166eme. Fresher & a bit creamier.
Nice but could use some additional cellaring. Less complexity than the 166eme.
Cream right up top. The fruits are more subtle than the 166eme. Lemon, lime, pineapple, tropical melon, kiwi, white peach, touch of grapefruit & green apple. Very soft, chalkiness & limestone marl, perfect sea fossils & saline, just a touch of white spice, brioche, touch of bread dough, spring flowers, some yellow lilies, racey soft, yet crispy acidity, perfect balance, soft tension & structure, balance for days and a nicely knitted & smartly polished finish that lasts 90 seconds.
The 169ème Édition Cuvée is composed around the 2013 vintage and is a blend of 146 wines from 11 different years. The youngest is from the year 2013 and the oldest dates back to 2000. The 169eme spent 7 years in the cellar. Composed of 43% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay & 22% Pinot Meunier. The reserve wines are from the House’s extensive library and made up 40% of the final blend.

CdB MN Spring Event (Minneapolis Club, Mpls, MN): Pale gold color. Drank 2 glasses over 45 minutes. This was shockingly disappointing, and I had to verify that this wasn't a mediocre starter Champagne, this was the Krug. Flat, mundane and tart with sour apple, this was also not helped by the serving temp. Nothing wrong with it, just didn't show.
2006 Barolo (Trattoria One Fifth, NYC.): [Pop and pour.] Gorgeous nose of yeasty dough and lemon custard. Tart, complex, delicious, but needs a bit more time.

Wonderful but I wish I had given it more time. We drank it over a 7 hour period and only from the 6th hour it really blossomed. So I do think its approachable but I would recommend opening the bottle 6 hours before and having a glass to let the air through the bottle and let it evolve.

Surprisingly tight and backward at first, high acidity and minerality, citrusy without the weight of most Krug I am used to. Air brought out a little more toast and brioche and Krug weight but not a lot. I am tempted to think this is a matter of age. One of the great things about Krug is that lesser cuvées … are still Krug. Very good. Score: 92. Relative to expectations: 0.

Krug GC is loaded with potential, especially the 2013 base. It has searing acidity but also crusty baked bread rind, with a little green apple rounding out the midpalate. Excellent from start to finish and these will hold just fine for many many more years.

Firm and a bit narrow for Krug, with a lovey nutty almond character on the nose and palate. Needs some time I think. Maybe lacking the richness of some vintages.

kɹʌɡ wɪθ dʌɡ (Chicago, IL): Showing brilliantly right now. It's a more laser-focussed, leaner Krug, but with the few years since release, this has actually tightened up a fair bit and shows a good amount of the typical Krug toastiness. More on the acid-driven side, but the fullness of Krug seems to have developed here. Maybe I have in general been too pessimistic on these weaker-vintage-based editions (this, 166eme, 163eme...) as they've all been showing pretty darn well tonight.

My first Krug, and not at all what I was expecting.
While it certainly had power, it was much more linear and acid-driven then I had understood the Krug style to be. Very fresh, with nice lemon and green apple bouquet, and a bit of floral spice.
This is objectively quite a well-made champagne, but I came looking for more oxidative notes and a broader profile. Perhaps I'd been mistaken about the house style. I will let half the bottle sit overnight to see how much if evolves.
Cuvee Holiday Lunch: Paired with agnolotti, duck confit, hazelnut and roasted jalapeño pesto with shaved pave vecchio. Two big stars on stage here! The wine was a bit shy at first as younger Krug usually is. Based on 2013, this wine was broad and needed every bit of fat in the duck and rich cheese to stand up together. Hazelnut brought symphony together.

Opened to celebrate Nita's & my 45th Anni w/ dinner at Ciao Bella in Edina MN. Stunning concentration and intensity as always. A regal & authoritative glass of bubbly leaving no doubt you've opened something special. A kaleidoscopic range of bright & lively citrus, stone fruit, hints of tropical, brioche & almond, riding on driving acidity & minerality. Pinch me! We rarely drink this and always love it! One left for the next special occasion.

PnP. Typical warm yeasty and oxydative notes. Opens up with air, but lacks a bit of tension and verve. Will hold and hope it becomes more interesting, but I fear it's just not going to measure up to the 164/168.
Loved it. One of the best Krug NV in my experience. Opened nicely as it warmed in the glass. Could smell this all day long. It was best at the 4 hour mark. After that, empty glass. [sniffles]

Bright and coiled - nice, but really too young at this point. And don’t get me wrong here, because this is pretty delicious, but it will be better with more time in the bottle.

First time trying this and colour me impressed. Nose showing the youthfulness one would expect with fresh biscuits and lemon in shapes. The palete is linear and precise with a complex yet tart finished. Quite a lot of depth here without any roundness or heaviness. Quite light on its feet despite the intensity. Likely the best young Grand Cuvee I’ve had since the 164. Will be hard to keep my hands off but this should be stunning with a decade or two of age. 93+

A wine of persistence and breadth, offset by invigorating acidity. Protean scents and flavors, fluctuating from spicy ginger/galangal to lemon, almond to warm bread. An outstanding rendition of this MV.

For me, way better than the Krug 170 I had a few days ago. More acidic, structured and complex. Had for a warm up at Cyrus up in wine country. One of the better meals I've had.
Definitely in the zone now but may improve with more bottle age. Will probably settle a bit and as the acidity calms some more complexity will emerge. No doubt a solid effort. Crazy how they charged $100/glass! Makes me think I'd better get into some of my vintage Krug's if this is happening for NV!
The Henri Giraud MV 15 today gave this a run for the money and probably edged it out today based on drinkability.
Either way, really enjoyed this and glad I have a few bottles in my cellar. No hurry, recommend to let it breath a while if drinking soon.

I’m not as big a fan of this as others…you can tell there is excellent detail and a very fine mousse, but at some point there has to be more than intellectual satisfaction. A bit hard and tart…quite dry as Krug can sometimes get

This bottle was PnP, drank next to a Prévost LC12. I strongly preferred the Krug. This 2013 base continues to show well with more time in bottle. Complex and nutty, with some oak signature and flinty notes, fall spices on the finish. I can’t emphasize enough how much Krug belongs in my cellar.
Still very young but delightful now. Heavy on the autolytic and nutty notes like an almond croissant fresh from the oven. Needs time to unfurl in the glass but rewards with savoury notes of brown bread and herbs.
I think it needs a proper decant, preferably with the decanter on ice, to really be enjoyed now.

I had Krug 167 during Covid. With a special occassion, I shared this Krug NV 169 with friends. It is a nice NV Krug but it needs time to decant. Especially, it is critical to have patient friends who could wait a while to consume. Otherwise, the sharp acidity may distort how we fully appreciate this champagne. That said, the 169 is still young from my opinion. Colorwise, light to medium yellow color. Apples, honey and toasted brioche. For sure this Krug is fizzy. Compared to 167, perlage is similarly fine and persistent with delicate mousse for a long time. Still, the floral smell is not as good as one with Cristal. This Krug is long finish. Enjoyable experience.

This thing keeps getting better and better. 2013 is a vintage to look out for in Champagne. You can ogle over your 2008s all you want, but I am continually reaffirmed that 2013 is going to be stiff competition for the already lauded 2008 (not talking just Krug standards, but for many Champagne houses). This is the best Grande Cuvee in recent memory. Succulent fruit matched with gorgeous tension. It'll be interesting to see how this stacks up to the 2013 vintage Krug once it hits the market. We have a ways to go before that little test can be performed. Until then, take down a 169 and tell all your friends how 2008 ain't got nuthin' on 2013 (and then let the arrows fly).
A breath of fresh air. I think this wine is at its core more Krug that 2013 if you get my drift. Time will reveal more waxy hazelnut and exotic kiwi fruit., grilled pineapple and so forth. It has such amazing midpalate penetration. I’m stunned by how refreshing this wine is in a flight of great Bordeaux, I kept coming back to it. From .375

An amazing bottle of Krug to celebrate over dinner. This wine was gorgeous.
Light golden coloring. Incredible aroma of brioche, toasted nuts, lemon that really opened up after an hour or so.
This wine was well rounded, and had incredible acidity. This was such a treat and yet so young. I look forward to drinking this bottle in years to come.
The 169th edition for the price if you can find it is an amazing bottle to enjoy now and will be even better in 10-15 years. However you choose you will enjoy!

It was such a fantastic moment to put my noise in my glass, the memory when I was young ( before my 10th birthday)when we use those fake shotguns in plastic , that left the smell of gunpowder behind and where you have to recharge with those red round plastic ammunitions , a flashback and a smell I didn't have more then 40 years !! the one of burned sulfer , bwhaa after that came a complex smell of brioche , almonds , some steel, but the mouth was more like wine and very balanced with the nose, it was silk with bubbles , nice it was more then champagne !
JT and Marty Super Bowl Extravaganza (Chez Newman): While this was certainly good and enjoyed by all, it was clearly too young for me; nice and fresh on the nose, but never really opened up and the palate was still leaning into the austere spectrum. Great potential but needs another 5ish years at least.

blind I loved it from the first sip at the winery. For me the best GC with 164. If you like it elegant you go for the 169 (base), if you like it powerful with some roasted aromas you will be lucky with the 2008 base. Awesome. 96-97

My first Krug. Very nice, but honestly, I'm a little disappointed. I was expecting mind-blowing Champagne. Instead, I got an enjoyable, solid drink. Very very young, tight and acidic, not very giving. I know these Grand Cuvees drink better with some age, so maybe I'm being a little harsh.
I can’t keep my hands off this Champagne. Once again, a great way to start a dinner, especially when paired with oysters and octopus. I’m down to my last three bottles so it is time to buy some 170 eme as I don’t expect my remaining three bottles to last for long.

Commanderie de Bordeaux: Winter Parlement - Chateau Lafite (The Minikahda Club, Mpls): Light gold color. Drank 2 small glasses blind over 40 minutes. 2013 base, 40% reserve wines dating back to 2000. The first glass was not memorable, a touch warm and flat. A second glass was more representative. Citrus, full bodied, hazelnut, lemon peel, chalk, and light-medium toast with still taut acidity. A stonking marvel of wine. On the nose it is a heady autumnal bacchinale of almond, autumn apple, overripe peaches, croissant, apricot jam, oysters, creme fraiche, tarte tatin… it’s so perfectly balanced on the palate and the finish goes on forever. It’s hedonistic in that Krug way. I cannot get enough of it.

not blind We had it from 5 or 6 different bottles. This is with the 164 the best edition of Grande Cuvee in the last 10 years. The base 2013 rocks. Love this edition. Not too many roasted aromas vice versa the fresh elements are dominating. 96

From a split. A bit disappointing for a Krug so far. Classic Krug nose and the brioche and acidity (maybe even a tad too much?) one would expect, but a bit closed off and a short finish. My guess is that this needs more cellaring time and should improve. Built around 2013 vintage, so cellaring requirement is not surprising.

Krug Lunch (7x GC, 7x Vintage, 3x CdM, 1x CdA): Seven Grand Cuvees: 157, 163, 164, 167, 168, 169 and 170th. No surprise that the better base vintages showed best. The 157th (95 pts) showed most round and complete due to the extended age. The 164 (95 pts), 168 and 169th (both 94+ pts) all show good substance and superb acidic spine for graceful ageing. The 164th, from magnum, has an elegance to it which is above all others. The 170th (90pts), 167th (92 pts) and 163th (93+ pts) seem a bit leaner compared to the others and not all of them will be very long-lived iterations. But this tasting showed clearly, that even the lesser vintages of Grand Cuvees easily need minimum 10 years after disgorgement to start to truly shine.
TN: Not overly expressive nose. Some more but still shy aromas emerging from the glass with time. Would have benefitted from decanting. On the palate this is beautifully nutty and minerality driven. The citrus core is pronounced but better balanced than in the even more energetic 168eme. Some very nice backpalate action with toasty and nutty notes which give a good balance. Overall a beautiful wine with good substance and an impeccable frame. Will be great in 10 years.
Decanting: This needs a bit of air.

Krug Tasting (Memories Bad Ragaz): Krug tasting hosted by a merchant and collector. Main takeaways: 1/ Clos du Mesnil and the 1996 back vintage were show-stoppers, 2/ 164 was in a different league of the Grande Cuvée line-up, 3/ a general feature and maybe signature for Krug for me was the fine integration of autolytic notes into a balance of fruit and mineral notes. The textures tend to be soft with just a splash of cream and structures built around acidity. 4/ Clos du Mesnil towers over the vintage and GCs in terms of precision, complexity and elegance.
Tasting note: Base 2013. Cépages 43% PN, 35% Ch, 22% PM. 6.5 years on lees, degorged Q1 2021. Broad mineral base with smoke and toast, above-average intensity. Brown pear fruit, tangerine zest with herbal infusion and fir. Precise and delicate. The palate added more to the structure, again mostly fresh and mineral but also with just a bit of cream. Not necessarily expanding, but well sustained finish.

Opened one to celebrate a friend's 60th. It followed a Champagne Rose to kick off the evening. I don't remember the aromas as much aside from the subtle citrus and orchard fruit notes. The palate was more memorable with a complex combination of white peach, nectarines, and a sprinkle of sea salt. Sensation felt more rounded edges than many of the bubbles out there, which is my I enjoy these immensely. If I won the Powerball tonight, Krug NV would be my house white. Lol.

Another unexceptional Krug experience. Quite frothy, on the tart side but in reasonable balance, good depth of citrus, some interest from the saline finish... but not complex, exciting or even particularly tasty. Has all the ingredients needed to age, but for now this shows no better than many of the other grand marques' NV Champagnes.

Just as my previous note from July, a wonderful and complex Champagne. Big yeasty and toasty notes with purity of orchard fruit flavors without taking a backseat to the oak and autolysis notes. Delicate mousse, strong acid balance, this was a great start to the dinner.

From 750ml- still extremely tight but a slight improvement since July. This took the better part of dinner to reveal itself but once it did it was very well balanced with a persistent finish.

This was marvelous and quite a bit better than my last bottle about 6 months ago. Served over several courses at dinner, this wine showcases the essence of a big house tete de cuveé (not that Krug makes an entry wine, just meaning within that class). It’s packed with sea minerals, somewhat neutral fruit tones, perfect texture and fine mousse, with lip smacking acidity. I’m excited to see where these go.

Krug GC 162-169eme (Chicago, IL): 120003. I liked this a hair more than the 168eme. I have to admit that around the 2012/2013 grower champagne releases, I realized that I didn't care very much for grower champagne and so my sense of relative vintage qualities has become somewhat attenuated. Anyway, that qualifier aside, I did like this a little more than the 168eme, finding this fuller and more complex. Perhaps it's a matter of this being less shut down right now?

Opened my first bottle of Krug to celebrate the birth of my first child, so maybe a bit biased. I’ve had this at least 20 times and from 750ml these are still tight. 375ml and these are good to go. Today’s bottle was from 750 and it opened up nicely over the course of the night and the last sip several hours later was the best. I don’t think this should be decanted but plenty of air is a must. This has great balance but is missing the 164th’s explosive energy. This is a few years out from its prime and will drink well for a few decades.

Visual: precise and persistent bubbles. Nose: bold brioche. Palate: full, soft, and forgiving, but without ever losing focus and drive. Lemon is dominant throughout, including on the long, zippy finish. It's greater than the sum of its parts. Nothing necessarily stands out, but as a whole package, it's just so professional and well-managed.

Taken to a sushi restaurant to be paired with the omakase. This was very floral with superb mousse. My wife and I were impressed with the length of the finish, which was more on the citrus and yuzu lemon side than brioche. Some hints of brioche and nougat. Bit closed at times. Delicious if still a few years away from prime drinking, solid 94/100 at this point.

I continue to be enamored with the 169 and, as I’ve referenced before, I personally think the 2013 base has everything to do with it. It didn’t possess the keen crystalline purity of the Cristal, but its focus and integrity coupled with that unctuous depth (inching toward oxidized nuances) already peeking through on such a young wine, make for a Krug that caters to both those who like the house style (which I admittedly find a little too oxidized and plantain-ridden at times) and those who long for heightened exactitude and tenacity. The 169 is a winner in both regards.
Red apples, toast and saltiness on the palette. Fresh red apples and nuts on the palette. High acidity and clear saltiness. Nice but very very young, a bit of a disappointment actually.

Dinner with Sean (Jade Palace): A very charming Grande Cuvee. This was still showing very youthfully, even a tad tight, but boy there was lots of quality here. The nose was quietly attractive, with gentle notes of apples and white peach, cream and buttery brioche, and then that little perfumy lift of white flowers that I have noticed in other bottles from the same batch. It felt like a higher-toned Krug on the palate, with bright lemon acidity and a fine fizzy mousse framing fresh flavours of lemons and green apples, trailing away into a tremendously long, juicy finish where citrus lime pips were met with a little hint of minerality. The strength and depth one would expect from a good Grande Cuvee was there, showing in a creamy presence underneath the fruit, but what came out most was how very linear and well-defined it was - a wine of quiet strength and bearing. It did open up more and more with time though, showing off superb balance, cut and structure. This needs many, many years before it hits its peak. On the night, I am glad the bottle was only shared by 2 people though. While it was not the most openly generous bottle at first, it really blossomed in the glass, and I was enjoying every last drop by the time the night was over.

My first Krug, shared with my mom and girlfriend celebrating Easter. Pale gold, ultra fine mousse. Some electric acidity on the attack, with a rush of yeasty bread, followed by bruised pear and apple on the mid palate and intense flavorful citrus notes finishing it out. Sometimes in wine I get acidity in general without being able to narrow it down - This was most definitely lemon and yuzu. The acidity wasn't harsh at all, but very flavorful, distinct, and mouthwatering. Paired with the effervescence it reminded me of a really high end yuzu lemonade I'd get at a Japanese grocery (but with more leesy action). No astringency at all, nice mouthfeel, and an incredibly impressive/enjoyable Champagne. One of the best I've had to date!

Quite citrusy with faint brioche, almonds, and yeast. Mouth quite a bit richer and brighter than I recall from six months ago with penetrating yellow fruit and acid, quite unfurled, and a long finish. Convinced that this needs 3-5+ years to be in strike zone. Young today but better stuffing than I remember.

Not convincing. Maybe too young. Tasted side by side with the 164th (delicious) and 2008 (very promising but way too young). It lacks the complexity and elegance of the 164th. Acidity isa bit too high, and I was not convinced by the texture which is a bit rough at the moment. The structure and balance are good though, but it seems a solid step beyond the 164th. A good champagne overall, but quite simply not what you'd expect from Krug.
I get the notes that the 169eme is better than the 168eme.
The 169eme brings beautiful lemon and citrus notes on top of the bright apple and mineral qualities, whereas the 168eme has such strong apple notes that the other notes do not come through as much.
Bright acidity creates a beautiful finish that keeps me coming back for another sip. Fantastic wine!

not blind, at Krug I'm convinced from this 2013 base GC, fresh, not too oxidative. For me after 64 the best in the last decade. Delicate electrifying. 95-96

Lys gyllen på farge. Ekspressiv på duft, bold, sexy med tarte tattin, smør, honning, nøttete, brioche, karamell. Lang syrlig utgang, lett bitter med asparges(?). Flott mousse. Delikat, nydelig, velbalansert, topp på alle vis.

Toasty and nutty on the nose, fairly citric and acid driven at this point, with fresh squeezed lemon, lime peel, pear tart and pie crust. What it lacks in midpalate volume it makes up for in balance and complexity. I would like to see it gain weight in the bottle.

Out of 375. Rich, slightly smoky, lots of acid at this young age. Underneath there’s plenty of fruit character waiting to break free. Feels a little shut down, but great potential.

Very fragrant, yeasty, biscuity, brioche, sourdough, asian spices, classic Krug pungent sort of aromas; on the palate very clean, but deceptively full-bodied, expansive, super tart with tons of acidity, but an amazingly long finish. Serious stuff. Along side Cristal, DP, RD. Yamashiro w/ Yarom and gang. This along with the '02 RD were my WOTN.

Unlike any Krug grande Cuvée I have ever had. the nose is dominated by Savon de Marseille, Meyer lemon, unripe lychee and guava…give it time and the flowers show up- jasmin, violets, magnolia, and a hint of sweet brioche. Very fresh and acidic on the palate- almost slicing, with a long, long finish. Lemon zest, toasted brioche, marzipan and toasted almonds emerge on the palate. Gorgeous finish that wraps it all up with a fresh whiff of citrus. Really nice, but will evolve to even greater heights. Next bottle in 5 years

Balanced. Wow. Not sure I've had a young Champagne of this quality that was so balanced. Obviously needs lots of time, but we had this to celebrate bringing home a new baby.
Everything is there just needs time to develop, glad to have had this from a 375, buy more.

No notes taken. This is beautifully complex with the reserve wines bringing in the typical Krug ID with an array of nutty notes complementing the fruit, minerality, bakery notes. Very well delinated, soft mousse. Compared to a bottle a few weeks ago (rated 96 pts), this was a touch less open, and less integrated with a high, pronounced acidity.
Decanting: This needed air, better to decant at least for 30 minutes.

Day 2. Sharp lemon. A bit of yeast and bread. Spicy ginger. Palate is similar. Tight. Citric - lemon. Spicy. Small potent bead. Finish is winey and tart. Good but not really impressive. Honestly, I found this kind of generic and nowhere near as interesting as the 164. Not even close. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 16/20.

Purchased to precede a Petrus brought by a friend. Nose is quite yeasty but in a pleasant way. Taste is acidity upfront with lemon tart followed by a wave of very pronounced bread with some mineral and metallic notes. Tasted with fresh boiled shrimp, rock clab claws, and cheese.

- Nose: fully present aromas of orange, red fruity, candied and slightly nutty to brown apple, peach. One notices the use of a lot of reserve wines (~ 40%), which offers more complexity and variety here. The complexity and rather red-fruited expression (65% Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier) should be emphasised. - Palate: Present acidity medium + and nicely aromatic with a lot of precision and clarity. Red fruit is also prominent here, very complex with pressure and length on the finish! A super overall package that is ready now if you like the pronounced acidity. - 95 points - Context: Compared to the Bollinger R.D. I tasted recently, Krug Cuvée Edition does not have as much ripe fruit and body. But also not as light-footed, elegant as a Dom Perignon.

Tasted blind. Apple, but not really of the fresh kind, more a bruised apple type of fruit. Distinctly nutty notes, also mineral notes reminding me of cold steel. Orange and lemon peel. Incredibly crisp on the palate and super round, dense and layered, adding green strawberry to the aroma mix. Was leaning towards NV which was correct given the various vintages included in the blend. The palate was a stunner and this will only get better with age - the only drawback is maybe a lack of precision (on a high level of course). Second time having this in a short period of time and this was consistently great.

Flickinger Customer Appreciation Tasting (Casino Club - Chicago IL): Walk-around tasting. Floral with apple, lemon confit and orange peel with very good textures and length. 2013 base, with reserve going back to 2000. A very successful edition. My favorite of the Champagnes tasted tonight.

New Year's Day Double Blind Tasting (Atlanta, GA): While not as good as the vintage, it is hard not to fall in love with the NV bottling of Krug. I slightly prefer the 169eme to the 168eme. A great way to start the evening. Don't serve it too cold. Serve between 45-50 degrees for optimal flavor profile expression.

Glass: Zalto Sweet Wine/Champagne Clear, pale golden color with extreme fine Mousseux. Clean, medium intense, youthful nose with Brioche, fresh bread crust, almond and yellow stone fruit. Nice, elegant, but I am sure there is more to come in the future. On the palate bone dry, almost austere with racy acidity. Lots of fresh lemon, yellow stone fruit and a beautiful mineral core. Very good balance and fine mousseux. Lots of energy and tension. But it feels still a bit nervous, unbalanced and young to me. I am a Riesling addict and can handle extreme loads of acidity, but this one is almost painful at the moment. The finish is very delicate, fine and almost shy. Very good Champagne that has a bright shiny future ahead. 92-93++

Drunk side by side with GC 164, Krug 2006 and 2008
Base 2013, the oldest wine dating from 2000. Already expansive nose on yellow fruits, almonds and nuts. Discreet effervescence. Precise and generous on the palate with creamy touch. For the moment, toasted notes dominate on the palate and a significant vinosity confirms when heated in the glass. Nice explosive and tracing finish. It’s very nice although still a little young for my taste.

Christmas at the Lodge: Krug's Grande Cuvée never disappoints. At 43% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay and 22% Pinot Meunier, the 169ème édition delightfully balances its creamy body with bright acidity and a fine mousse. Lemon zest, blossom, and marzipan dominate the nose, while hints of stone fruits and nuts on the palate point to an increasingly more complex wine in 10-20 years. Pop whenever: there are no losers here.

The benchmark for traditional style champagne. This seemed a little bit lighter and fresher than 167, but no complaints. Great acid balance and concentration. Lemon, baked apples, white floral notes. Great blending here as per usual. Has both characteristics of an aged champagne and a young one.

Mostly Champagne & Burgs (VVF, Krug, DP, Rousseau, Fourrier,…): Wow, this is fantastic. Even this young, this is so disarmingly easy to drink. The complexity is high, the precision impressive, the wine is fresh and layered but already so round and creamy. The house style with toasty/nutty notes is quite apparent. We had this next to the excellent Dom Perignon 2008 (rated 96 pts) but while the Krug is so seductive, inviting and complete, the Dom Perignon is still painfully young but shows immense potential and complexity with a precision that is stunning and even clearly better than in the Krug.
TN: Medium expressive nose with seductive toasty notes, some red berries and some spices. Much more impressive on the palate with layers and layers of caramel, toasty notes, hazelnut, orchard fruit, apple, a touch of peach, some lime from the attack through to the long finish. The wine has a medium acidity, perfectly integrated, good weight and substance and a creamy texture and is so incredibly elegant and complete. Wow.
Decanting: Not decanted, no decanting necessary.

Tasted blind as part of a Champagne and Burgundy tasting (plus pirates). Brown pear, steely minerality, but also hints of caramel and burnt sugar embedded in a frame of fine brioche. The balance was incredible, the texture finely knit. Rarely had a champagne that was this fantastic. The combination of precision, soft and silky mouthfeel and expanding finish is hard to top. Very limited experience with Krug so far but this definitely calls for more!

This is all elegance and class, we knew we were in for a special treat when the flight with Krug GC and Dom Perignon 2008 showed up. Elegant, full of finesse, complex but with that Krug signature freshness, it is showing notes ripe citrus, red berries, sweet spices, autolytic notes, but also amazing freshness. It was pretty clear blind that this had a lot of Réserve wines in it. Medium-full bodied, layered and deep, with high acidity cutting through everything. Long finish with great complexity. A wine of great class, depth and precision.

This pours medium straw in the glass. bubbles are very fine and dissipate somewhat on the faster side. The nose is expressive, youthful and complex showing preserved lemon, fresh cut red apple, sourdough, a touch of flinty reduction, a whisp of caramel sauce, buttered toast, and a topnote of kiwi. The palate is immaculately balanced entering on lemonade, turning to perfectly measured dosage, right where I'd like it for this bottle (5-6 g/l), then finishing on preserved lemon and lightly bitter apple peel. Lingering on the palate for minutes later are the light touches of buttered sourdough and caramel. All in all we have a wonderful young krug. Slightly less overly toasty and toffee'd as I've had from other editions, but really showing massive potential to age and a lovely profile. I'd expect this to pick up a point or two as it ages.

Pale gold color, nose has minerality, slight yeast, touch of lime. Palate is absolutely amazing. Smooth creamy mouthfeel. Classic Champagne hints of brioche, some green apple, good minerality and an absurdly long finish. Medium high acidity. Still tastes young, but is already ready to rock. If I had no job, a million dollars, and a liver made of titanium, I would drink this every day.
Every bit as good as the 168. So much lemon, from freshly squeezed to preserved with loads of salt. There's the traditional Krug nuttiness and toastiness but everything is in high definition. It has the usual power but is light on its feet and the finish has such great cut and persistence and is a study in chalky minerality.

At Anhelo and a perfect start to what would become an incredible dinner. While I prefer all Krug with more time, it was fun to have a glass from my favorite champagne house. Much more lifted than many vintages this baby is hyper vibrant with the typical Krug qualities I have become very fond of in my champagne. If you love the zing or are just curious, pop these now. If you prefer more of the staple Krug qualities, hold for a while and then a little more :)

Some serious champagnes: This was so lean and racy that most people including myself thought it was a grower champagne. More immediacy than the Krug 2004, the crispness and zesty fruits were more apparent from the beginning. Yet to develop the creaminess and power associated with Krug but this was so delicious and balanced that it definitely wasn’t a crime to open this so young.

富麗華午餐 (Chicago, IL): 319028. From half-bottle; not notated as 169eme on the label. This is a pretty textbook edition of Grande Cuvée, with a typical blend of Krug richness and a relatively lighter profile. Fairly fruit forward at this point, this has a bright and cheerful disposition. Easy to drink, and in this size, doubly so, even if it's my understanding that this form factor will be discontinued soon.
This bottle showed a bit more richness than previous bottles, but not still without the requisite punchiness that I’ve grown especially fond of with the 169. Just when I think I might want to age this version of Grand Cuvee, I run into a bottle like this that begs to be drunk more near-term. Either way, I have no complaints and am continuing to love this charming representation. Drink or hold, or don’t or do, or whatever and wherever your yogi (not the ‘pic-a-nic basket’ Jellystone bear) presence of being takes you. Namaste (Au revoir) my good people… or Auf Wiedersehen (lookin’ at you Jo-Joey Krug. ...Well, and Heidi Klum of course). Bottom line: The 169 is a solid Champagne and probably the best young Grand Cuvee Krug has produced.

Big Al & Janelle's Spanish Inspired Blowout (Big Al & Janelle's, St. Anthony, MN): Light gold color. Drank a glass of 168 followed by a glass of 169. Tonight I found the lighter, crisp and more energetic 168 my preference with its lean style and bright minerals and fruits. The 169, was still excellent, fuller and richer, but less expressive which all may be a reflection of age and presumably the vintages. 93+(+)pts.

My btl tonight at Big Al' & Janelle's epic Spain inspired dinner. Felt like we dinned in Seville :) This was quicker off the starting line tonight the 168. Youthfully energized & coiled but also showing striking depth and elegance already. Credit Krug with their remarkable ability to blend vintages & grapes for a signature style without sacrificing site, fruit & vintage transparency. A kaleidoscopic range of bright & lively citrus, stone fruit, hints of tropical, brioche, almond, riding on driving acidity & minerality. Personally, I'm loving this.... now! Going to be tough not to open my remaining 3 before 2023 :)

Jazzy and brisk, with a front end that hurriedly sprints to the attack with crunchy and crisp green apple and yellow pear skin flavors that surge energy. The initial electricity is complimented by broader lemon, grapefruit juice, yuzu, and kumquat notes which become sappier with air and a slight rise in temperature in the glass. Almond meal, brioche crust, and roasted hazelnut notes slightly peek through on the finish with continued exposure to air, sheepishly unveiling hints of that familiar honeyed and nutty Krug profile of previous Grand Cuvées.
For me, I associate much of this wine's adorable spirit to the 2013 vintage. The magnetism is captivating and fun, keeping it from becoming too routine and typical. Currently, this is fresh and chiseled, with a budding sappiness that will further develop with time. Drink now for the zeal or hold for more fleshiness down the road.
ID#120003. 2013 base (40% reserve). 43% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay, 22% Meunier. 7+ years on lees. "Receiving its cork in winter 2019/2020." 146 wines from 11 different years (2000-2013).
From half bottle. Excellent structure with great length. Already showing some hazelnut aromas. Finessed and elegant. Could last another decade or two, but drinking so well now.

BYOK: Dinner with Olivier (Ai Fiori (Langham Hotel on 5th Ave)): Starting the night off with the newest release of the Grande Cuvee which is a champagne that has a special place in my heart because it was probably the first good champagne that I 'got'. This is good. Nice structure, very fresh, lots of spice notes. It's young and still tight and all of that but these do seem to age very well and this feels like it would do the same if given some time.

375 bottle. One of the zingyer and zippier grande cuvee Krugs I can recall. Very concentrated lemon, rinds, peels and verbena, followed by an almost over the top minerality. Very expressive and pleasing.
From half-bottle (Krug I.D. 319028). As impressive as any young Grande Cuvee I've had. Crisp and intense blend of lightly grilled lemon, lime and orange sitting on a slightly honey graham crust. Terrific balance, long finish, almost impossible to put down. I suspect everything fell into place tonight for this wine; temperature, palate, stemware, format, food, age, cork, etc... all of it.

BLIND REDS - Bordeaux varietals (mostly Napa and BDX) - Over/Under $100: Similar to the most recent bottle of 168 I had where I found there to be more freshness and energy than some of the previous heavier and oxidative iterations (looking at you 165 and 166!), this 169 has enough verve and yellow citrus dynamism to stay at the upper register of vigor and tension, which I personally appreciate. Tingles on the finish with just enough effervescence to dance on the back end with chalky lemon seed and tangerine pith notes. Less of the nutty and yeasty notes to be found here.
Those who wish to age their Krugs and fancy for the grilled plantain flavor will have to wait a bit on the 169. Those, like me, who are desperately trying to dodge that note may want to check out the 169, and should start popping the cork now (ya, ya, I know, blasphemy to the purists). Sure, it’s a primary and somewhat linear lemony zing of a delivery right now, but I’d much rather have that than drinking a kerosine Mangú down the road. Pick your poison… or just buck up and buy some Cristal and call it a day.
Fabulous, obviously, but lacking some of the body and bite of the 167 and 168. Still, it is rich and complex, with the characteristic velvet sophistication of Krug.

From a full bottle at a Krug-hosted Zoom tasting event
2013 base, pale yellow color, fresh vibrant lemon nose on opening with a dark mousse note already very evident, on the palate quite tight with a lean citrus fruit leading into a long lean finish, a very fine after taste with orange notes and a bit of cream, after 30 minutes the mousse notes opened out fully taking dominance on the palate with zesty citrus acids around the edges, after an hour more expressive still with a lovely rich mousse, brioche, oranges, lemon zest, white flowers and a fine cream note emerging on the center, right now this is very much like the 166eme with the mousse out there so early- but here there is a bit more muscle and length, in fact in terms of sheer volume this is not far off the 164eme and a bit more powerful than the 168eme, with time these all converge to a large degree- but still this one has a raciness to it that I like very much and that I expect will be a notable component of its personality at maturity, another fine iteration of MV Krug and one very much to my liking personally, approachable now with air- but I would lay this one down and rely on the 168eme for early drinking.

169, base 2013. I was not really suprised because I prefer often the cold 2013 instead of 2012. Less opulent but more elegant and focussed. Great Krug perfume with lemon fruits and less roasted aromas. A long distance runner. 95-96
CdM 2006, Typical nose of the vineyard. For me second best after GC 2006 in this triology. Beautiful precision. 96
Millisime 2006, the weakest, compared to 2002 and 2004 far awy in realtion to energy and precision. 93

From a half-bottle carrying KrugID 319027 which was disgorged 19-summer. Crispy and razor sharp fruits and acidity. Compare with 168eme half-bottle, it seems a little bit lean on the palate at this time. It's a baby for sure and miles away with those mature Krug NV MG/DM. But it's still a lovely Krug I can enjoy any day!

Very nice indeed. I was expecting something tightly coiled and backward but to my pleasant surprise that was not the case. Instead, rather relaxed and expressive, with plenty of Krug signature toastiness and hint of caramel and nut skin. Quite delightful without becoming too challenging and a perfect accompaniment to shrimp risotto.

From .375ml and against the 168eme. Right from the start it seemed a bit less “Krug-like” than the 168eme, but that changed as it got more air. Aromatics are more lime peel and flesh dominated, with oyster shell too. More of a raw bread dough character here than the toastier notes of the 168. Very refreshing with a long finish.

319027. From half-bottle. Initially, somewhat thin with orchard fruit flavours and none of the expected Krug richness. It's only with air that this picks up its girth. The nose and palate are both on the relatively lighter side, and this shows a little more bright fruit and freshness right now alongside a slightly green herb tone. I expect the nutty, bready flavours to develop with more time in the bottle (especially given that they seemed to increase in intensity with air in the glass). A good dose of chalkiness on the palate too. In the hierarchy, I'd probably put this a hair behind the 167eme, but ahead of the 166eme and 168eme.

Very good.

kɹʌɡ wɪθ dʌɡ (Chicago, IL): Showing brilliantly right now.

The wine was a bit shy at first as younger Krug usually is. Based on 2013, this wine was broad and needed every bit of fat in the duck and rich cheese to stand up together. Hazelnut brought symphony together.

Likely the best young Grand Cuvee I’ve had since the 164. Will be hard to keep my hands off but this should be stunning with a decade or two of age. 93+

Tasting note:
Base 2013.

Krug Grande Cuvee 169 Edition.
Uhyre ren, elegant og fresh.
En sylskarp slank og presis utgave av GC.
Ekstremt ungdommelig og intens som få.
En ren sitrus og mineralfest.
Stramt, men likevel svært tiltalende.
Vil nok utvikle seg pent.
Lang pirrende finish. 94p

High intensity of flavors firing on all cylinders, an amazing showing of an oxidative styling of Champagne (which is definitely a preference for me).

Party with some 100 pointers: 2013 Cristal, 169 Krug (2013 base), and 2010 Dom Perignon side-by-side.

- 95 points
- Context: Compared to the Bollinger R.D.

Clear, pale golden color with extreme fine Mousseux.

Already expansive nose on yellow fruits, almonds and nuts. Discreet effervescence. Precise and generous on the palate with creamy touch.

Wow.

For me one of the best young Grande Cuvees, cool vintage, late harvest, oldest vintage 2000, feels much fresher than the previous edition, no roasted aromas. I think for the next 20 years plus. 95

Immediately reminded me of the 168. White stone fruit with light oxidative touch. Good persistence and bright acid. Nice edition and one for the cellar, though I wish it were richer.

Probably the best young Krug I have ever tasted. The balance between fresh bright and crisp citrus and green apple fruit and the weighted complex backbone are truly remarkable. This is 100% outstanding and worthy of its name.

Light, bready and yeasty, but most discernible character is the intense citrus on the nose and palate with toasted and raw lemon, bright zest, with very strong acidity. Noticeably light but has a depth in flavor and character that is both interesting and unlike other versions of this bottling I have had

94 points for the 169.

Grande Cuvee 162ime, complex, accessible, balanced, candied fruit and lemon zest, less roasted aromas. 96
