Light fresh and saline, tasting of green hazelnuts. Delicate, elegant and classy with a fine finish. There was a bitter note but this was not too marked and would no doubt enhance a savoury Tapas nibble. CHP 87 pts

By the glass at St John's, London. Bright and leaner than the oloroso we tried before of course, richer and creamier than a fino though. Was paired with the rich dishes a St John's and worked very well albeit with its sharper brighter edge. Pretty 89.

There's not a salty food in the world that won't pair perfectly with Manzanilla (or Fino). Served with blistered Shishitos, Cecina and Manchego cheese, this wine helped while away a beautiful spring afternoon.

This is from the same batch as the bottle I wrote about in March this year. May the colour has deepened a bit, but the taste is still highly complex, intense and fresh. It benefits from a night in the fridge in a half emptied bottle. Nevertheless once bottled these kinds of sherries is meant to be drunk within a year. So buy it from mechants with a quick turnover in inventory. 5/13/17/7

Plenty on the nose: olive brine, green almond, marzipan, gooseberry, and bread dough. Fresh and crisp, there is some good complexity here. The alcohol is well-integrated - there is nothing out of place with this wine.

Flor coming through. Very dry and light despite the 15% alcohol. What was I thinking when I left that Spanish ham in the kitchen? It will be even better with those salty bites of deliciousness.

Pale-ish lemon straw colour. Quite a heavily salted flor nose. A bit fuller on the palate than I recall. But some of that seems to be whatever the sherry equivalent of bottle stink is, as it becomes fresher with time, with lemony, appley fruit and a lovely savoury note.

Pale straw. New bottling delivered from the producer to my merchant two month ago. Fresh and intense scents and flavors as mentioned in other notes. Typical and excellent manzanilla working on its own and even better with food. One of the rare wines that manage food with fresh onions. Also great with every kind of fish even oily sardines. 92 points from the Wine spectator, which are well deserved. 5/13/17/7. Drink it in the next 12 month preferably.

TASTE: dry; light saline - apple; pretty light flavor -- not much depth; nowhere near the excellent En Rama bottling. Think I'll stick with Valdespino's Inocente. Gut impression score: mid 80s.

Salted almonds on the nose. Strong smell of cox apples. Creamy texture, that apple note again, lightly yeasty, tangy with almonds on the finish. One of my favourite everyday wines and on particularly good form today. Drinking with some olives and cheese and It’s almost like being in Sanlucar.

Bottled Oct 2013 and stored in my cellar since 2016. Clear amber yellow, lifted aromas of nuts, almond, raisin, bread, sea water and subtle wood. Showing yeasty honey bread on palate. Dry midpalate yet it has a smooth and offdry finish. Interesting wine and slowly grow on me.

Utterly classic Manzanilla with definitive aromas of brine, salt over green apple skin. Fresh and minerally in the mouth. Minimal style here but one that speaks true to the category. Very nice.

Straw, Tasted several times in the last weeks. I like and prefer finos and manzanillas with food (or as an aperetif) because they work very well even with food that is not easy to pair with wine as anything with fresh onions or smoked and/or oily fish for example smoked salmon or eel or sardines in oil.... And the manzanilla from Hidalgo La Gitana is one of the most elegant, complex and intense manzanillas at this price level. Yet it is all about lightness and freshness. It is meant for drinking not for aging, so it is a good idea to have a merchant with a quick sell off. 5/13/17/6 -2019

Fresh, typical manzanilla nose with citrus notes. Soft, complex, nutty palate with salty, citrus, almost brioche flavours on the long end palate. This wine is consistently enjoyable with an excellent QPR. Too easy to drink.

One of the better modestly priced manzanillas. This bottling shows nice finesse, with the expected green almond, salt water, and chamomile flavors, but also a generosity of texture that is a step up from entry level.

Taste 1: Nice nose of almonds. Very sour; high acid. Seems flat on the palate, short, boring.
Taste 2: Very savory, orange and citrus with a bit of Worcestershire; nuts, plums, dried cranberries. Fairly rich, with medium acid (could use a bit more). On the heavier, more syrupy side. Quite nice, but begs for a bit more acid.

Drank over a few nights. I'm no sherry expert. This is sharp as all get out. Better with a chill, to be sure. Smells of gasoline (petrol if you want to be that way) and hazelnut oil. Good with cheese, fried peppers, would be great with a dried fish/salt cod pate, also with olives and nuts. I have another and I'll pull it out for a Spanish themed meal in fall.

Pale lemon yellow color with a slightly greenish tint. The nose is quite delicate and restrained, yet shows that typical, pungent aldehydic aroma of Sherry. Aromas of salinity, ground almonds, some ripe green apples, a little hay, a hint of honey and a touch of smoke. Bone-dry on the palate and although the low acidity of this medium-bodied wine makes it feel quite mellow and somewhat oily, the acetaldehydic tang from the biological aging (aging under the flor) keeps the wine really crisp, sharp and saline with a tart lemony note. There are flavors of salt lick, sorrel, lemon zest, some yeasty bread, a little green apple and a hint of roasted and salted nuts. The finish is very long and intense with crisp flavors of salinity, green apples, some nuttiness, a little lemon juice, hints of roasted pine nuts, a touch of white cheese rind and a fleeting nuance of campfire smoke. Only in the aftertaste the alcohol (15%) shows a little with a sensation of warmth in the throat.
This is an attractively light, fresh and clean Manzanilla with very prominent saline tang and flavors of nuts, green apples and lemon zest coming from the aging under the flor. As many people don't find those aldehydic notes that enjoyable, you really can't call La Gitana a beginner-friendly Sherry. Yet, if you enjoy that aldehydic tang, this is a wonderful, classic Manzanilla! Even though the wine is produced by a big Bodega, this is still a very impressive and, above all, very classic effort with lots of typicity. At 5,80€ for a full bottle, the wine shows ridiculously good value for the money.

“Fortified Wines of the World” (blind), Wine 1: This sherry was pale lemon in colour and offered citrus, green apple, quince, almond, hazelnut, mushroom and acetaldehyde aromas on the yeasty nose. On the palate the medium-bodied Manzanilla was yeasty, salty and dry and seemed a little broad, with citrus, apple, almond and hazelnut flavours, medium-level acidity and good length. The alcohol was harmonious and well-integrated.

Clear yellow gold. A dry acid driven Manzanilla. Lighter bodied with some cool citrus fruit & high acidity. Tension & texture in the mouth with layers of floral & herbal elements.
This doesn't have the depth of the en Rama, but shows a bit more fruitiness up front. An excellent Manzanilla.

The wine is clear and bright with a pale lemon yellow colour and dense slow falling legs. The nose is clean and fully developed, with medium+ intensity aromas of almonds, yeast, lemon peel and dry herbs. It's dry in the mouth with a low acidity, low alcohol (for a fortified), medium body and medium intensity flavours of lemon peel, yeast, almonds and dry herbs. Medium+ finish. It's a very good quality wine with a good intensity of aromas and flavours and a decent lenght, it has elegance, but lacks some complexity. Drink in the same year of the bottling, not suitable for ageing.

In Vino Veritas Session 5 (MIT): Biscuits (English, not American), salt, bitter almond. Very dry, quite salty on the palate, reasonable acid but mostly on the front and back (where it is joined by the alcohol). The near-mid palate is quite empty. On the very back-end there's a distinct note of liver. Certainly an acquired taste and not really one for me. Take this rating with a pinch of salt - I've little to compare this with and it's just not really my thing. 15%, $18/500 ml.

Quite a gold tint to the colour. The aromas are still fresh and sharp with a powerful green apple note. Far more depth and power than La Gitana. It has the same tension but there is a brooding power behind it, dense and savoury with a real nuttiness balancing the salty olive flavour. Very nice.

Really nice showing out of this one. After a little while nursing a very fresh but very lean manzanilla from Lustau I was surprised to go back to this standby and find something so much deeper and so much more serious. Yet still with that same marine freshness like you're drinking the beach, which is definitely reinforced by the fact that the texture feels practically sandy, almost like it has a rustling of tannin.

By the glass at Iberia Tapas in Menlo Park. Pretty nice stuff. This was bottled in late 2010, so it was just about time to drink up. The nose was very developed, with wafting scents of figs and kumquats, preserved pears, some white peach and plums, little hints of malt honey and some light saline, sea-breezy hints. Very nice. The palate was a but simpler, but a real joy with salty fried tapas with its lovely juicy acidity framing mature flavours of fig skin and pear, a touch of seashell and a nice savoury saltiness. It was just a bit tired as it gently tapered away with a bit spice and kumquat at the finish, but there was still a nice mouthwatering linger that made each sip call out for another. A great little sherry at this price point, and really lovely with the right food.

I'm a fan of the ordinary La Gitana (in fact, I'm slightly suspicious of anybody who isn't). This version is richer and more evocative of the sea air. At more than twice the price, however, the law of diminishing returns is most definitely in operation.

Christmas & New Year 2011; 12/23/2011-1/2/2012 (Home): Probably not the freshest bottle (15 months from purchase and stored in a warmish place. Pale colour. Fresh, saline nose, all seaside on a Spring morning, a slight breeze coming onshore. Similar on the crisp attack and light across the mid-palate to a fairly long and saline finish. Not particularly comes but refreshing and reviving. ***

Much darker in colour than the regular bottling which reflects the raw nature of the wine. Subtle but intense nose - floral and plaster. Grippy in the mouth. A true, fresh and young Manzanilla in an elegant style - not a bruiser cf. La Bota de Manzanilla or the Gonzalez Byass Palmas. Very pleasant.

I will pay closer attention to the date codes. This one is L04203 so it probably should have been poured a few years ago. Lots of straw and white corn. Very dry and probably lacking some umph on the palate. There is a bit of heat also. It is alright but I've enjoyed the Lustau more. I will reserve judgement until I can try a fresh bottle.

The back label recommended opening this within 12 months of bottling, and indicated it was bottled in 2005. But this was such an eye-opener and I think it's going to put me on a sherry kick. And for inexplicable reasons, a rare great match with Szechuan food.

No doubt that these are better sooner after the bottling date. I wish I had soem serrano ham to go with the almonds and olves. Nose of almonds, apples, oat straw (really), and sea air. On the palate, apple, almonds, brine, hints of toast. Does not have the bone dry finish of its youth. The final comment is that I need to drink more Spanish sherry, especially if I have olives around it is a great pairing.

This is a regular Fino buy for me, reliable and compelling. 500ml bottle, fresh, very pale, saline, animal notes, almond, oxidized notes, a challenging one to describe. Many do it justice here. Good Manzanilla, more character than some; as Manzanilla it should be a bit ligher than other Finos, which it is.

Blind Tasting - Manzanilla Sherry with Eric Asimov and Peter Liem: delicately floral and a bit musky, and I enjoyed the whiff of tangerine I was getting. Mateo found it to be juicy and salty, and thought of it as a sassy black sheep among the other wines. BrooklynLady thought the finish was delicate and delicious. Eric thought that the wine was too young, that it was not yet evolved.

It is not easy to rate a Manzanilla as it is unique and can not be compared. This particular one was a delight with local food last year but keeping the bottle for 1,5 years made it lose its freshness a bit. Still, this pale straw coloured beauty smells of yeast, tastes of salt and feels like you are in Andalucia.

Maybe the perfect 'introductory' Sherry. Very pale yellow, lightly salty and lemon nose. The palate is vinous rather than fruity and perfectly well-balanced. Medium finish of clean brine. This wine would compliment a wide variety of foods as it is significantly lighter in body and intensity than most Sherries I have tasted. Proof also that even a light wine can be 15% abv and be neither hot nor flabby, nor evoke even the barest sense of sweetness. I enjoyed this wine very much, although it is a bit closer to white table wine than I expected, still a great value at the price.

The nose on this is bright and delightful, fresh apple peel, nuts, and the frothy salty tops of waves on an Atlantic beach. On the palate it is very crisp and tight. The taste on the initial attack is very fresh tart apples dipped in kosher salt, followed by lightly toasted salted almonds. The finish lingers for a long time.
Night Two
The nose has not changed from Night One to Night Two. On the palate it is just as salty, with less fruit and some liquid smoke and toasted nuts. This is incredibly flavorful, but the flavors are unusual in a wine, even a fortified wine. Salt is really the predominant flavor, so if you are not a greek olive and feta fan don't bother. The finish is different, fruity with apples as an aftertaste.
I don't really love this wine. I am, however, quite fascinated by it.
UPDATE- a hat tip to Alex of Eating Leeds for the reminder, for Manzanilla is most definitely a food wine. I drank think with mixed salted nuts and dried fruit (almonds, pistachios, cherries, raisins). Even with the salted nuts this was too salty for my personal taste, but that is most definitely a personal palate observation, not a criticism of the wine itself.

I've never had a dry sherry before, let alone a manzanilla, so this was quite new for me. I could see the olives and brininess, with the slight oxidation/nuttiness I've experienced in other sherries. I can't rate this sherry since, with the first taste, I discovered that I hate Manzanilla. Ick. For those who are new to wines and know that you like Port (or even Madiera), do not assume that Manzanilla Sherry will be a similar wonderful experience. I will probably pour this bottle out, as it is very dry with a somewhat rotten flavor. My apologies to any Sherry fans out there, but this is not my cup of tea.

Fresh, clean faintly briny aroma, with characteristic sherry nuttiness; crisp almondy taste with long finish, I love it with salty meats, nuts, cheese. Bottled 12/05. Bottled in October, 2005. Very pale, slightly greenish-yellow color. Very little nose with some hints of almonds showing. Very good, crisp, dry, salty (other reviewers noted this and I agree, though I wouldn't have thought of it) palate. Dry, short finish.

Bright and leaner than the oloroso we tried before of course, richer and creamier than a fino though. Was paired with the rich dishes a St John's and worked very well albeit with its sharper brighter edge. Pretty 89.

NOSE: light, salinic apple; medium-light nuttiness; slightly bruised apple; moderately expressive.
BODY: medium-light bodied; pale maize color.
TASTE: dry; light saline - apple; pretty light flavor -- not much depth; nowhere near the excellent En Rama bottling. Think I'll stick with Valdespino's Inocente. Gut impression score: mid 80s.

Night One
The color is a very light bright yellow straw.
