Pnp. Nose exhibited autimn leaf, tobacco, dried fruit, and earth. On the palate, it had vivid acidity with fully resolved tannins, alongside lingering fruit. It was very enjoyable with a good mix of primary and secondary character. The wine seemed to be just off-peak but thoroughly enjoyable. In fact, I find the underrated 89 Chateau Canon to be more compelling for its roundness.

Bottle and cork in great condition. Double decanted and followed over a few hours. Similar to the previous bottle I had. Classic aged Bordeaux notes. Not a blockbuster, but very nice.

Glorious aged Bordeaux from a great year. Realtively tight on opening and needed an hour in the decanter to open up. Still pretty deep colour with some bricking, clearly a very well stored bottle. Felt very alive with a nice seam of acidity before the glorious aged flavours of earth and some tobacco came through. Resolved tannins. Wish I had another bottle!

Well stored bottle that seems too young. Lot of fruit, medium body, soft with short finish. Not much 1982 typicity here. Tasted blind and everyone thought it was 20xx Bordeaux.

Pronounced nose intensity with notes of black fruits, mushroom, spices, flora, violet. Medium acidity and medium tannin. Tannin is integrated and smooth. Drinking at its apogee. Will not improve and drink up now.

At lunch, The Queensland Club. A fine bottle of 82, this had been cellared in a cool cellar since arrival in 1984. The colour remains quite dense crimson with just a touch of edge red colour and the nose jumped out of the glass with rich dark plum, blackcurrant, dark chocolate and some notes of allspice and cedar. The palate had that terrific 82 spherical impression in the mouth with fresh baskets of dark fruits and a very fine touch of tannic rigour that provided balance. While not especially complex the sheer beauty of this wine wins my heart.

Less exuberant than the last couple of bottles, but very classic and fine. Not likely to be any upside from here. A quick double decant 90 minutes prior to serving.

Bordeaux Wimps June 2023 - 1945 (La Trompette): Fully mature now but still drinking. On the nose - earth, autumnal churchyard notes. On the palate - a hint of camp fire, the tannins are still holding the structure together, there's acidity and even freshness. This was the oldest wine one of our table had drunk up to this point - this is definitely a good first 82 to drink.

Perfumed rose petal nose. There is a touch of TCA on this that is getting worse with time and is spoiling the palate. Lovely bramble and underbrush. Really good purity and focus but lacks the and breadth for a higher score. The structure is still relatively young, good acidity good tannin and fruit is still there. Long finish, complex. Drinking well, Will go on for a decade or more.

Seamless. Wow. Just a tremendous bottle of wine with incredible depth and polish. Feels pretty much mature at this point with the tannin fully resolved, the acidity giving it nice lift, and the perfect balance of still-rich red and dark fruit and more developed leathery/earthy/tobacco/cedary flavours.

St. Emilion night (Chicago, IL): What a treat to cross paths with this wine again. This is showing so well, with its silky, plummy textures on the palate. Mature red fruit here, with some dried herbal notes, but mostly a plush breadth on the palate that gives this wine really nice expressiveness. One of my favourites tonight, this is in the zone with just the right amount of maturity but also still so much expressively plush fruit.

I wanted to try a few 1982 Right Bank Bordeaux tonight to determine if the wines are fading or still holding on. This one is both. Of course bottles of this age will vary and this one was a recent purchase. Still, based on past experience, I was hoping for more. Not spoiled in any way and somewhat enjoyable there was simply not enough berry fruit in there. Blah.

Decanted at 330pm. From a full case purchased from original owner. Best '82 cork I've ever seen. Perfectly clean, less than 4mm penetration. Immediately expressive on the nose and didn't feel tight in the least, so back in the bottle with the cork in the cellar until dinner. Didn't want to over-decant which I think is what did the last bottle wrong. Poured at 8pm and was perfect. Wonderful fruit, fully integrated tannins, great finish. This wine doesn't need much air.

Auction bottle but appeared well stored with a low neck fill. Needed a couple hours of air to wake up. Nose is absolutely terrific and of the sort that only mature bdx can deliver. Mature dried ripe fruits, sweet pipe tobacco, and some herbaceous leafy greens round this out. The nose is the show—as the palate delivers but has completely resolved tannins and the finish is lengthy but doesn’t deepen over time. Doubt this will get better but not going off a cliff anytime soon.

Just as lovely as I remember it. Last tasted a few years ago and it continues to hold up well. Red fruited, with complete bricking all the way through. Soft and supple, with some clay notes, just a little volatility and warm spice. Beautiful wine.

Deep dark garnet in color with slight clearing at the edges. Full, forward & fragrant nose of ripe fruit aromas of cherries, blueberries & cassis with classic overtones of cedar & tobacco, floral notes of violets, earthy, loam, minty, truffles, leather, herbs, some spices & minerals. Medium-full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & silky smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of sweet cherries, mulberries & cassis with spices, herbs, cocoa & minerals. Long lingering smooth finish. Drinks quite well at present & should continue to hold at its peak of development for a few more years if cellared properly. However, at 40 years of age I doubt any further develop would occur. Fill was at lower portion of neck; cork was intact but stained 1/3 the way.

Simply glorious from the first splash, combining all the best elements of old school Bordeaux. Currant, capsicum, and campfire. Poblanos roasting at the farmers market plus cocoa, leather, earth. Pyrazines offset by sweet fruit, sewn together with some of the most perfect acidity I have ever tasted in a red wine. Soaring majesty.

Still firing on all cylinders. Remarkably fruity for a 40 year old merlot, with an effusive bouquet, seamless palate and lots of nuance and complexity. A complete, herbal and earthy old school claret layered with fruit and glycerin. Complete.

An amazing combo of youth and age. Bordeaux funk at the front w some slight acetone. Red fruit still showing w bright color and a bit raspberry aromas but lots of old world palate, rubbery and major mouth feel. For this CA palate, this is the perfect Bordeaux!

Wonderful. Right where you want it to be now. Classic Bordeaux nose. Cassis, wet earth, saddle leather. Tannins have faded into smooth sweet silk. Bright red fruits and more leather on the palate. Not going to improve from here, so drink 'em if you got 'em!

82 Canon is a beautiful wine, elegant, silky, earthy, floral, herbal and on the fresh, ripe, red berry side of the style range. Medium-bodied, and not quite as concentrated as it was, while still a treat, it’s time to drink up over the next 5 years or so, as it’s not going to get better from here.

Brown/bricking red color. Dark fruit, earth and forest floor notes. Tannins and structure fully resolved and, based on this bottle, in the “drink now” category. That said, this was probably not a perfect bottle, but it was very good nevertheless.

Very brief note- 1 ounce pour at the end of a very long tasting evening.
Good red color showing some bricking, on the nose robust cherries and cedar, on the palate a superb old-school Bordeaux with textured ripe cherry fruit and a fine robust structure to match with cedar and hints of forest floor, fine long finish, lively and vibrant, I am so very sorry I did not get to this until the end of the night.

Andrew's Birthday 2021: Decanted 4 hours. Great fill and cork. Immediately showing a full bouquet of dried fruits and hoisin. Good fruit on the palate but a bit muted and slightly astringent finish. Not as fresh as previous bottles. Maybe decanted too long.

Back in NYC (Francie): A bit more restrained and quieter than the other two Bordeauxs that we had alongside. It seemed like it could potentially use a bit of a decant or a bit more time in the glass.
Fully-developed, elegant, earthy, supple, silky and fresh, you also find a beautiful truffle and earthy accent that comes along with all the ripe, sweet, red berries. Aged elegance is all over the place here. There is no reason to wait if you own a bottle, just pull the cork and enjoy.

Absolutely fantastic. A cornucopia of flavors, including a large dose of earthiness to complement the tremendous fruit. From an Ex-Chateau case, and happy to have eight more of these. Terrific.
Decanted to remove sediment. Right away showing a wonderful nose, deep, bright and vibrant with violet, red fruit, caramel, a bit of stem, and a touch of rose garden. Luscious smooth tannins with good weight, palate of black fruit and spice and an extremely smooth finish.
A perfect bottle that was singing with a 30 minute slow-ox. Rich and still decadent, concentrated fruit made complex with leafy tobacco notes. So long and delicious.

Drinking beautifully right now. First bottle of 3 purchased recently. Slow ox for about 30 minutes and then decanted. Balanced fruit with subtle tannins. Good weight on the palate. I don't see this getting any better from here, but looking forward to enjoying the other 2 bottles over the next few months.

Maybe as good as bdx gets upon opening. Clear cab influence with a minty leafy element mixed in with red fruits. No decant and 2-3hrs later this was fading to a good, but not great bdx. Silky fruit of ‘82 was there but still had plenty of depth. Cork was nearly perfect, almost like it had been reconditioned at some point.

The best bottle yet from my slowly dwindling case, this is drinking just great. Aromatic, silky, fresh, vibrant, floral and earthy, the wine combines complexity and hedonism, finishing with layers of sweet, ripe, juicy cherries that feel as good as they taste. Well stored bottles have at least another 10 years or more at this high level before the wine gently declines.

Decanted for an hour — initial impressions were that the Margaux was at least 15 years older than the Canon in every way. Lighter color, mature rim. Fully mature dark fruits laced with cedar and spice notes. Resolved tannins, elegant texture, nice finish. The Canon showed all the 1982 vintages strengths. Rich underlying fruit, luxurious texture almost sumptuous wine.
Interestingly after a couple of hours, the Margaux presented far younger. It darkened, the mid palate filled out and the fruit sweetened a touch.
In the end this was a wonderful pairing of two fine Bordeaux’s both drinking very nicely

Dinner at Pizzeria Bebu (Chicago, IL): Something is funny with this bottle -- it tastes at least a decade younger than it ought to be. This is probably the freshest bottle of 1982 I've ever had, to the point it's frustratingly not ready. There's a very slight hint of brett here, but it's well balanced by the black fruit. The ripeness here is dialed back; instead there's plenty of acidity to provide structure and freshness. There are but nascent secondary elements; in fact, this is sort of in that phase between primary and secondary where the wine just feels kind of shut down. The last bottle of 1982 Canon I had was fully mature; this one has just started its journey to maturity.
I put a Repour on this bottle and revisited it a week later -- if anything, this bottle is just flat-out splendid now. It's picked up a little more of the mature flavours, showing a hint of dried figs, a perfect amount of leather (and leathery tannins), and just the same amount of fresh acidity. I've ticked the score up a notch here -- it's just developed that well.

After unloading all my ‘82 Canon but this bottle due to numerous disappointments, I stumble on this outstanding example, Wine of the Night for several guests among many bottles. Just wow. This bottle was flawlessly sound, fill in the mid neck and a perfect capsule. Cork camp out in a single piece and looked like it was 15 years old not 36. And the bottle was purchased on release so no suspicions of provenance. Stood up for 1 week prior to opening at our group tasting
The wine poured dark ruby with some mild bricking, no sediment. Nose of a old library and cigar box. Tertiary development is there, but a remarkable about of fruit left. The ripeness and concentration of 82 is on display. Fully resolved tannins with a long and memorable finish. Kept tasting the memory of it hours later despite a number of other wines tried

Tampa Spring Break (the third); 2/16/2018-2/18/2018 (Various Tampa locations (Seasons 52, Capital Grille, Berns etc.)): Funny - have run into this wine quite a bit lately. From a magnum. The first though is just how fresh it is. This does not taste like a 35 almost 36 year old wine. It's very pretty. Oddly enough it comes across as more left bank than right to me. I get black fruit and violets. In the glass with time the spiciness starts to build. It's a pretty wine and quite enjoyable.

I was a bit skeptical of this wine (perhaps because I remember the bottle we tried a few years ago, but not the small sip of this I had last year). Apparently with Canon it’s all about finding the pre-90’s wines. This one still had some of the darker fruits along with the classic Bordeaux leather and saddle. Very enjoyable.

Union Des Grand Crus de Bordeaux Tasting of the 2015 Vintage, nose of black cherry, slightly sour cherry, and forest floor, same on the palate, tasty, big body, subdued but mouth filling fruit, needs five years to peak, and probably a higher score, slightly disjointed with the medium amount of soft tannins, medium/long finish.

Last bottle. Best it has ever shown. Classic mellow, mature right bank. Basically a late summer fruit salad. Nothing tartness here at all and needed no time to open up. Dinner at Osteria Langhe (Chicago, IL): Killer Bordeaux. If more Bordeaux drank like this, I'd probably own more of it. This must be at peak right now -- the high proportion of merlot (and it shows, very clearly) will probably start showing a little bit of decay soon. It's not in dire danger, but I am more than pleased I was able to hit this wine right now. There's a hint of bell pepper that tells you there's a nice dose of cabernet here, but merlot is the story here. Clean minerality on the palate gives a bit of a lift from the heavier fruit flavours. This isn't too barnyardy or stinky -- just good old Bordeaux as it ought to be.

Better on the nose than on the palate, which I hope is relegated to this specific bottle, because normally, this is a beauty. Flowers, licorice and black cherry scents are the tip of the bouquet, the palate for this bottle was a bit light and short, lacking the body and length, normally associated with this wine.

So good. All that you love and want in a Canon, but with that extra special '82-ness taking it to another level. It has those Canon facets that many AFWE know by heart -- loam, limestone, cherries, brown sugar, Burgundian brightness and texture -- but it goes to 11 with the fruit, glycerin, and concentration. The mid-palate is nearly heavy with concentration yet the texture is all silk and the structure is both ample and resolved. I think this is fully mature, showing some tertiary notes of black tea and mulling orange, but it will likely hold at this level for a long while. Just fantastic. 94-95 pts.

My first experience with Ch. Canon. REALLY loved the cedar, cigar box, leather profile. Great classic BDX nose of darker red fruit and forest floor. This is a bigger style red that just got even better after a few hours in the glass when the fruit came forward more and secondary flavors receded a bit. Paired well with the rare sliced steak. I'll have to search this out to try again...and again.

DIY Holiday BYO Dinner (Amali in NYC): Very small pour. Excellent spot right now and might make me have to reconsider my position on Canon (our only previous experience over the summer left me thinking it was over-rated). After a bad streak of several undrinkable old bottles, this finally gives us something to drink that has a bit of age (then again, everything else was ex-Acker and this came from HDH). This is still far from maturity though and needed a couple of hours in the decanter to really open up, eventually showing layers of cedar, walnut, leather, and tobacco around a core of red and dark fruited flavours that are still incredibly youthful. There's still quite a firm tannic spine here even after 30+ years, though with grilled chicken it's fantastic.

Bottle in good condition, dirty but no obvious leaks or other problems. A little crusty on the nozzle, scraped off, super long cork came out in basically one piece. Poured one glass & decanted the rest. Deep purple, nearly black in the glass with amber rims. Strong black currant / cherry nose. With a sip, deep layers of vibrant cherries, mineral Earth, black coffee. Long finish, very port-like character without the sting. This is how a Bordeaux is supposed to be.

750ml stood for weeks, slow ox for 90 mins, decanted for 90 mins, then served as our quaffer (!). Gorgeous, textbook crimson, very lightly bricked color. Very consistent with my prior bottles: "Faint bouquet of violet and plum. Soft, red fruit that had fantastic structure, with just a touch of sweetness and overall entirely seamless." Three of us savored this for over an hour, and it just kept improving in the glass. I wish I had more of this!

At 30 years of age, there are no great wines, just great bottles. This was great bottle. The floral, cherry blossom, crushed stone, forest floor and cigar box aromatics were enticing. On the palate, the patina of silk and velvet that accompanied the wave of fresh, sweet, ripe, pure cherries felt great. Popped and poured, the wine got better and better in the glass. This is worth finding a few bottles, if they have good provenance.

Tasted blind, this wine had a red/purple center with orange rims. The medium intensity nose showed black cherries, mocha, soil, and flowers.
This wine was very ripe and rich and in the beginning seem a bit too lush. As it aired it firmed up a bit and became attractively balanced in a ripe, oppulent way. It had very good length.
While this wine will never have the complexity of the Cheval Blanc, it is a very attractive wine and will likely pick up a point with another 10 years in the bottle. However, I wouldn't hesitate to open one if I had a 4-5 hour runway to let the wine sit in a decanter before serving.

750ml stood for weeks, purchased from private cellar. Our wine friends seemed underwhelmed by this little sleeper :) I thought it was quite delightful, and each sip was better than the one prior. Opened for an hour, double decanted, put back in bottle to open and served at dinner with the salad course as our quaffer (!). Very light bricked color. Faint bouquet of violet and plum. Soft, red fruit that was a touch sweet and entirely seamless. Nothing truly extraordinary, I was hoping for a touch more wow given the price tag, but I quite enjoyed it. Occasional dinner group; Mature and classical Bordeaux (@ WB): Beautiful and mature bouquet with autumn forest floor, sweet spices and still some red berry fruits. On the palate a bit special and still very much alive. The wine shows red berries, metal, iron and other minerals, earth, firm acidity and tannin which is still sticky. Overall an open, expressive wine with a great length and still tannin with a good future. The special part is that the wine is very elegant and seems to lack some body which is in contradiction with the other impressions and considering its age. Anyway this is a great bottle!

Brian's 40th (Park Palace, Grand Park Hotel): Amidst all the great bottles of Burgundy on the day, it was a Bordeaux that was one of my favourite reds (just bested by a stupendously good 1973 Drouhin-Laroze Latricieres-Chambertin). This was just singing on the night, with an indrecible bouquet of tobacco and spice, violet flowers, then cassis and plums and dark cherries, all tumbling out of the glass in a beautiful mélange when first poured. Wow. The palate was at absolutely peak, with soft, melting, silky tannins caressing the mouth as the wine unfolded in sweet waves of cassis and plums. This was so gracefully balanced, showing both the ripeness and purity of the vintage at the same time, before fanning out into fragrant flavours of spice and dried flowers on the midpalate, and then gliding on into a long, lingering, tobacco-infused finish. Completely resolved and perfectly integrated, this was every bit the quintessential mature St Emilion. Beautiful stuff.

Best bottle yet. Well matured claret albeit from a heralded vintage and Parker was right on this. A powerful vintage but not ott. The age has mellowed this wine. Juicy dark brown fruited , notes of barnyard leather, truffles and almost pauillac nuances. Absolutely satisfying wine

1982 Bordeaux dinner (The Grill Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown): Expressive nose displaying mostly red fruits, dark chocolate, leather and mushroom. Excellent concentration, a bit chewy and slightly rustic. Nicely integrated tannins. Drinking beautifully but will age further.

decanted 90 minutes Deep ruby red; complex, but not overly assertive nose of dark chocolate, briar/pipe tobacco, hint of melon or mint- something slightly sweet; pomegranate, tart red cherry, red currants, mid palate smokiness, espresso, medium body, smooth but not soft; nice weight on the finish, green tea flavor at the end. Holding up very well, but no rush....

Yes Virginia- there IS a good merlot- particularly one from Saint Emilion with a dollop of cabernet frank thrown in for good measure. Some may not appreciate the slightly herbaceous and earthy notes but they do not dominate and add a frisson of nostagia to those of us who revere the good old cool- Earth days. A wonderful chewy fruit and soft tannin finish. I would give this 90 points c/w it's sister 1982s but 93 points as a particular kind of wine experience that only aged Bordeaux seems to give.

Delivers a lot of pleasure that will not break the bank. Tobacco, minerals, truffles, back cherry, blackberry, chocolate, mint and hints of cinnamon fill your nose with pleasure. Full bodied, concentrated and opulent in the mouth, this sensuous, sexy little thing delivers a lot of pleasure. While mature, there is no hurry to drink a well stored bottle, as there is ample stuffing to last for at least another decade.

1982 Bordeaux at Crabtree Kittle House (Chappaqua, NY): Lovely stuff; a core of plummy and red fruited flavours framed by mature cedary, tobacco and savoury earthy elements all conveyed with a sense of power and grace on a medium weight frame. There's lovely balance here, a silken mouthfeel and great length, an outstanding bottle.

1982 Bordeaux (Crabtree Kittle House): Lovely mix of plum and raspberry fruit, sweet and smokey on the nose. Smooth and fleshy, chocolate on the back end, very merloty, plenty of fuzzy tannin left, long finish. Easily the best of the right-bankers tonight.

BWE: 1982 Bordeaux Retrospective (New York City: Fabio Piccolo Fiore): Dark red core, lightening at rim. Sweetest/ripest nose in this flight. Fresh, young on the palate, a creamy texture, medium finish. This did not excite as much as the first two in the flight, came acros as youngest off the bunch, but still excellent. Tried a bit more at the end of the night and it had developed considerably more complexity, so it probably wasn't showing its best during the flight. This was a pop and pour, I think the others had been decanted ahead.

Sunday Brown Bag Tasting: 2008 Meursault Les Perrières (Neil's): Deep core, subtle bricking at the meniscus. Opens with a touch of brett, followed by red berries, plums and licorice. With time, the brett blows off completely. Balanced, with nice depth to the dark fruit flavors on the palate. Velvety texture with a long, lovely finish. 92-93 pts.

Bought as future and well stored. Opened for half-hour and color was red with plenty of orange at the edges. Nose was only good with some veggie hints. Fruit was good but still tannic in this bottle. Will try another bottle soon and hope to see improvement.

beautiful ripe right bank presentation. relatively primary in its pure, ripe fruit and pretty cassis nose. a treat to drink, this is among the 'youngest' of the 10 or so '82's I've been fortunate to drink over the past few years.

We had the 1009 at the UGC tasting earlier in the day. This was an excellent chance to contrast a newly bottled wine to an well aged wine. Both were beauties. The 82 was still very fresh. A beautiful nose with leather and and bright fruit. The palate was still about the fruit. This wine is not fading yet. I won't live to see the 09 fade.

I served this in my wine course. Beautiful sweet nose of fruit and leather when first poured. Became more focused after an hour or two, with cherry and mushroom. But started to fade soon after. Medium weight on the mid palate. Still plenty of acidity on the finish. Tannins have matured, but wine still feels well structured.

1982 Bordeaux dinner at Lavandou also bubblies, whites and stickies: Ripe baked red fruit compotes but also crushed berries. Fully matured, deeply toned nose of leather, tobacco and mushroom. Excellent concentration with sweet fruit. This may evolve further displaying more expressive tertiary nose. I prefer the nose of La Lagune.

The fill was base neck and the cork was pristine; popped, poured and consumed over the course of 2 hours. Medium bodied, with outstanding balance and depth; nice focus and grip on the long finish.

Lovely wine, a touch of iron initially on the nose, but quickly evolved into secondary and tertiary note, A touch of cranberry and cedar, warm spices. Soft and long, truffle, earth. Quite elegant. A bit of tobacco, and iodine, but in a balanced, dark cherry way.

Tasted blind, this wine had a deep red center with orange at the rim. The high- intensity displayed black cherries, plum, mocha, and soil.
This medium wine bodied wine with noticeable, rounded tannin did not cause anyone to guess Burgundy. It was a merlot-dominated wine that was extremely well balanced. Surprisingly, I believe this wine will continue to taste better over the next 5 to 10 years. At that time, I would expect my score to improve by 2 points or so. If you can't resist, give it 4+ hours of decant time.

Flowers, truffles, white cherries, stone and earth scents make up the complex perfume. Full bodied, rich, concentrated, balanced and elegant, at close to 30 years of age, this beautiful St. Emilion is running on all cylinders. The wine ends with an earthy, soft, sweet, licorice over red and black fruit finish.

The fill was into the neck and the cork was sound; another pristine bottle. Blood red color with amber at the rim. The bouquet offers up notes of ripe dark fruits and herbs, with a hint of flower and chocolate with additional air. Quite elegant and balanced on the palate, with good grip and focus -- lacking just a bit in terms of mouthfeel. Another fine showing for this wine, which seems to be at the top of the mountain from a maturity standpoint; I'll drink my remaining bottles in the near term.

Opened 5 hours before dinner. The first few sips were still quite closed, but this quickly blossomed in the glass into a wonderful fully rounded, but also elegant and classic claret. Notes of red fruits, tobacco, nuts and chocolate. This is near its prime, but with no sign of drying out and has many years if not decades of life left.

Another lovely bottle that was in absolutely pristine condition. Once again, this was quite elegant, balanced and graceful; all the components are in perfect harmony. That being said, this will not improve with further aging, and I will be drinking my remaining bottles over the next year or two.

I've always liked this vintage of Canon but I thought it was not exciting. Well this one was. Perfect mahogany color for age. Lots of totally integrated cedar, flowers, hint of earth. Full, rounded, long and pure. Equally pleasurable on the nose and palate and the clean finish wrapped up the package very well.

Pinots, Bordeaux and Farewell to a Favourite Haunt (The Universal @ Duxton Hill): This was first class. After about an hour in the decanter it showed all the great qualities of an aged right-bank from a good year. Lovely nose showed lots of leather, tobacco, gravel and smoke layered over some damp, foresty leafiness. Very left bank actually, which was a theme picked up on the palate. Again, lots of lovely deep tobacco flavours, some rich cassis tones and some bloody, ferrous notes. However, there were lovely Merlot notes all throughout, with sweet plums and sappy cherries galore, along with lots of spice and a smooth, soft feel that was just so charming. Finish was lovely too. Ripe cherries, spice, chocolate - a veritable Christmas pudding - all slowly melting into a nice gravelly length. A beautiful wine. This can last for some time yet, but it was at a perfect point to drink when we got to it.

Canon dinner (Dobbs Ferry): Like the '89, this is the complete package (though a little deeper and richer in its flavour profile than the '89) - stunning aromatics combining cassis and red fruits with tobacco, cedar, earth and herbal elements, power with grace in the mouth and fantastic length and presence. Great wine.

A rare wine which leads from a big complex nose to equally full flavors and mouth feel and then a long complex finish without any unexpected turns or bumps along the way.

Very nice. This won a shoot out over dinner against 82 Figeac and 82 Cos D'Es. A lovely mature right bank which still had decent structure and freshness but just lacked that extra depth and complexity to be truly great. This felt much fresher and younger than the Figeac even though both bottles were in good condition.

Bordeaux Dinner at Dino: 82 Canon to 05 SHL Blanc and a lot inbetween (Dino's Washington, DC): Quintessential claret and my wine of the night. A delicate, ruby, almost burgundian color. Light notes of brett but integrated properly with some touches of camphor/mahogany wax, sous bois, cedar, truffles. It is delicate but not flimsy. A wine still possessing some grip but with a very refined palate of cassis liquer that might have been more directional/potent 5 years ago, but is still very intriguing now. The finish is a light fade, but still possesses enough plush feel to please. A wine that is probably at its secondary peak, a peak to which I don’t believe it can evolve more positively. If you have them, I’d assume you have a 2-3 year span to enjoy them before you bury them for Francois Audouze to marvel at generations later. A real treat to drink. 94GW

Perfect bottle, good fill, cork was fine. Color mostly mahogany, though some cherry when held up to the light. Nose gained in complexity over the three hours in the glass, with dark fruits, tobacco, cedar. This wine had terrific structure with well integrated tannins. On the palate, it led with primary fruit aromas but then built to a very long finish with tobacco, pine, camphor, cedar and a strong ending mineral note. A fine fully mature Bordeaux and went very well with our cod with wild mushrooms, pea tendrils and peppers. It crossed well into the cheese course, and it seemed to us like a wine that would be a wonderful companion to a lot of different foods. We aren't big Bordeaux drinkers, and had this thanks to the generosity of Laura. It reminded us what people love in these wines.

A treat from a very generous friend and ex-chateau! on top of being an 82. Poured into a decanter before serving. Lovely chambolle-like bouquet of intense floral-scented stewed dark fruits and dark cherries with cigarette ash but this had more lushness to it as well as some sun dried cow leather. The bouquet is not exactly complex but it is collected and calm with sense of direction and purpose. Absolutely elegant and delicately balanced with al dente combination of dark cherries, sahara sand smooth tannins and almost sweetish strawberries. Again not as complex as what you would expect but a monolithic focus on delivering its package of finely balanced milky silky haven. Finish rings long into the night. Yummy wine but still short of being great. On the second pour, there was an obvious streak of orange peels. I call this an elegant lady in her mid to late 30s, good family but not filthy rich or even aristocratic, just good upper middle class.

Sweet cherry notes at first, deepening over time into a more stewed fruit character. Good if you got it on release, not so good if you paid back vintage price (as I did), but as an experience of a legendary vintage probably worth it.

This wine is all about secondary flavors and aromas. Slightly briney, dark fruited nose. There are some cedary notes on both the nose and palate. The palate is especially fine, with some meaty overtones. Over the course of the evening, the palate became richer and more flavorful. Tannins are smooth and nicely intergrated. A good food wine that paired nicely with the beef kabobs and fried rice.

Definitely deep into its secondary stage and "old" wine lovers willl appreciate it more than fruit-seekers. Lots of mahogany and orange in the color, and this was a bottle purchased on release. Mellow old Bordeaux aroma of tree bark, cedar and dried currant. Fortunately, the palate is fresher than the nose, the texture is pleasing and the finish clean and bright. The balance is fine but I question its future.

A concentrated and dense bottle of wine with rich black and red fruits. The nose was almost like strawberry jelly with touches of vanilla. Not the most complex wine, but very enjoyable. This '82 Canon is getting better each time I try it. For years, while not flawed, it was one dimensional and essentially dull. But now it is blooming and the rich chocolately merlot fruit overlaying a vanilla-tinged layer of oak is compelling. And since we had the excellent '70 Canon to compare, it seems Canon has the legs to go a considerable distance. Very nice indeed.

More concentrated and dense than the last bottle I had which we started consuming with only about 30 minutes of air time - I remember thinking this was pretty lightweight and unremarkable the last time - totally wrong! Gave this one three hours in the decanter, and I think it really paid off. Nice fruit, minerals and a little complexity. Got better and better over the following two hours. Probably hitting its peak now. Didnt blow my mind, but far more enjoyable than I had anticipated. Glad I have three more bottle to enjoy.

This was my bottle, purchased on release from The Chicago Wine Company in 1985. Mid to low neck fill, perfect appearance. I've had this wine several times before and never been impressed because it seemed too simple and slightly lacking in depth. But not this one; dark ruby to the rim, attractive scent of blackberry and vanilla. So no; it's not the most complex '82, but there's genuine distinction, a wealth of ripe fruit and an oaky touch as well - but now it all adds up to something really nice. A most pleasant middleweight with a beautifully rounded finish and a good future. A 4 hour decanting may have helped. These '82s are getting better and better.

The Mexicans taste 1980s Bordeaux ('88 Haut Brion, '82 Cos, '82 Canon, '82 Leoville Poyferre, '86 Pichon Baron) (Hermosillo, Mexico): This was the most evolved wine of the tasting. The cork was healthy (as were all others to my surprise) and did not show heat damage, but Gusbo thought it was. The color was also he most evolved medium ruby. I liked the nose on this wine despite Gusbo finding green bell peppers that I could not sense. I thought it had the very mature minerality that all other wines lacked (except for Cos). The wine was lacking a little fruit to rate higher, but the finish was long and pleasant.

Mouthfilling fruit of cherry and plum with a nice round finish. 94pts. 3/01 (Ringer in Right Bank Bordeaux 94-98, Group #1, My #3) Deep crimson/garnet. A wine with some age. Wonderful rich aroma of secondary team aromas and red fruit. Nice smoot red fruit with a touch of VA and a hint of licorice and cedar. Long finish. Can you spell majesty? Well, that's it. All the majesty and pomp you could expect for a big Bordeaux. Imposing, robust, concentrated, and in the end a bit overwhelming - I feel this wine is still too young, but how can this be? Because at that point, it has majesty, but that's about it - complexity is not yet to be seen - will it ever be?

Opened at Lampreia with Suzi, Mom, Bob, Jason & Tracy. This shows a deep, pungent nose of minerals and black fruit, very brooding, and with some time tobacco emerges. On the palate this is very silky with a surprising amount of fruit (my notes say "gobs") on the entry. Deep, earthy, complex again with stunning minerality--nothing like I have seen on a red wine before. At first the finish was tight, but with time this lengthens out and shows such a long, smooth, beautiful finish. Sigh, I am a sucker for wines like this. I wish I had been collecting 20 years ago! (Now that would have been a smart way to invest my Bar Mitzvah funds...)

Nice coffee-scented fruit in the nose. Rich and full. Plenty of alcohol, too. Broad flavor, plenty of fruit. Tannic, woody, alcoholic. Maybe Exhibit A for those who claim the '82s aren't holding up. With MPL at the LWB. Ruby with a bit of orange at the rim. Looks deep, mature. Fine Bordeaux aroma/bouquet. Flavorwise, this wine is really different. Big, strapping and bold, yet very round and elegant on the palate. In a word, complex. Great cassis flavors initially, then lots of round, smooth flavors, with a wallop of tannins in the finish. Interesting to see how it changes from beginning of taste to end. Very long. Really sweet flavor throughout except for the Tannic finish reminds me of the '66s I just tasted. Wow! 5-11-18-8: 92/100.

Enjoyed this paired with a 1978 Chateau Margaux

94-95 pts.

Great color, On the nose, getting tar, leather, black fruits and some ceder. On the palate the wine is fully intergrated with great structure and very soft tannins, silky and smooth finish.

Wine was very mellow - all tannins are gone - had with lamb shanks - then waited a while and had rest of bottle which had been decanted with cheese - wine changed and had more up front flavor - no finish need to drink this one up

dark ruby red with hint of brick edges;complex nose of white pepper, saddle leather, walnuts, brandied cherries, red currants;very full bodied, soft, mature but not weak tannins, ripe red cherries, red currants, black plums;seamless transition from palate to finish, complex very long finish.

I was suprised by how well this was drinking with a mouth of chocolate, prunes and a bit of tobacco. If you have some of this in your cellar, drink up!

91st Dinner of the George Rezek Society (Kendall College): Medium coffee red color. Slightly musty mushroom nose of briar red fruit. Rich black fruit with a bit of pruniness. This wine was decanted and resealed 12 hours before pouring and I think it might have prevented it from showing its best, but this wine seems to be well over its peak IMHO. Drink up.

Nice smoot red fruit with a touch of VA and a hint of licorice and cedar. Long finish. This wine, though with impeccable provenance, showed much more age than the one I had at Veritas in 2001. 1/05

With MPL, BLR, Donna and Marne at the LWB--Donna and Marne gave me this for my birthday. Shows a bit of age. Deep, dark ruby with orange rim just beginning to show. Nice coffee-scented fruit in the nose. Rich and full. Plenty of alcohol, too. Broad flavor, plenty of fruit. Tannic, woody, alcoholic. Maybe Exhibit A for those who claim the '82s aren't holding up. I'm not sure about this one. It may be going over. 5-10-13-5: 83/100.

With BLR, KLJ, and summer clerks at London Wine Bar. Ruby, with an orange rim. Actually looks ready. Excellent nose is packed with fruit. Rich. A bit of alcohol in the nose. On the palate, big body, tannic and oaky. Bitter finish. Weird at this stage; just awkward and in need of time, or what? A disappointment after tasting this wine only months ago. 5-11-13-6: 85/100.
