Damp leather, still some dark red fruit on the nose. Tannins have mellowed over the years for an extemeely well balanced and delicate taste. Allow only 30min decant then cover - low-medium sediment on the decant

Dodgy looking bottle from auction for £160 and boy was it worth it. The wine is just perfectly balanced across the red fruits, earth and tobacco box flavours and acidity. Beautiful wine and really struggled to share!

The most complex nose with mature fruit, tobacco , coffee and vanilla. Low tannins , imperceptible alcohol , mod acid. Enjoyed immensely with an aged ribeye. Ready to drink.

Popped and poured and this was ready to go 20 min later. A wine drinking at its absolute peak. Fully resolved tannins with exceptional balance and length. These should be enjoyed within the next 3 years. Revisit 2025

Took a good decant for the mushrooms to disappear. Not too many brownish notes considering the age. Quite tertiary with forest, wood notes and some red fruits.

18 months since my last bottle. A very refined and subdued wine with great complexity and balance. This required an hour in the glass to somewhat unfurl but didn’t fully reveal itself today. This is in its prime with another decade of optimal drinking. Revisit 2026

Vertical Tasting Seven Vintages from 1997 to 2018.
2018. Dark red. Cherry nose and rather closed. Light body, bright to sharp acid. Dark cherry, fine but young tannin. Long finish.
2013 Very dark red. Cherry, cassis, wood but not vanilla, white pepper nose. Terrific intensity on the welcoming palate - dark fruit, cherry, and blackberry. So light on its feet, and really athletic. Acid is obvious, tannin is firm on the finish but that is equalled by the intense fruit. Long finish.
2011 Very dark with a mahogany edge. Green pepper, cherry, and airy. Much larger body than the younger wines; it's mouth-filling. As with the 2013, the acid is obvious but balanced, in context. Leather, cherry, long finish... so impressive. the tannin is obvious on the finish. Later in the evening, the fruit is even more exotic.
2000 Dark red and mahogany edge. Peanut, smoke nose but ripe enough. Palate has cherry, leather, and some spice. Good concentration.
1999 Dark red mahogany cast. Green pepper, cherry nose. Very concentrated in a medium body. Palate has leather and cherry fruit. Balance is excellent, tannin is suave. Not the longest finish.
1998 Very dark with mahogany edge. Nose with green pepper and dark fruit and fruit liqueur. Leather and sweet cherry palate, so complex. Great length to the finish.
1997 Very Dark red and mahogany cast. Green pepper, horse sweat in the intense and mature nose. Green pepper then cherry then leather on the palate with great intensity.
Summary: I pick the 1997 as the best Sassicaia tonight and the 2011 is the wine with the best future.
Mystery wine: Very dark red, white pepper, blackberry nose. Cassi on the light-bodied palate. Tannin is drying and this seems not as ripe as the other wines tonight. I guessed it to be 10 to 15 years old and from California's north coast mountainside.... it is Haut Brion 2002.

In beautiful shape now. As others have said, some mint / menthol early on (nose and taste( but that quickly blows off. With more and more time in the glass it develops and grows in complexity and depth. Pretty sure that this is the last of my case, unless I’ve managed to hide one or two deep in the cellar and I’m sad about that - I don’t know that this will get much better but think it will remain in this great shape for a few more years at least.

Deep and open. Nose of ripe cassis, black currants, maduro tobacco. The palate was less thrilling than the nose - a touch one dimensional, simple - a shame as the nose is so gorgeous but just doesn't carry through on the palate. Not one of the better Sassicaia's I've had - doesn't have the full package as a '98 I drank this past Xmas eve.

2022 Excellent Burgundy Adventure; 10/31/2022-11/6/2022 (Burgundy): En magnum served blind. Expressive nose displaying concentrated red fruit with a hint crème de cassis, lead pencil, ash, tea, a hint of green and earth. Very good concentration, nicely layered round red fruit, warm, silky, good acidity and mineral, and a long round red fruit driven finish with a hint of green at the end. My first guess is a mature Clos Rougeard than Grange des Peres. Nice showing.

Will T’s Sassicaia @ Noizé (Noizé, London): Dense, slightly cloudy ruby. Cabernet and mint nose, tending towards menthol though curiously this seems to lift completely after a couple of minutes. Similar to the 02 on the palate, just a little granier. Some mocha with air. Fresher with good acidity. **** Becomes a little soupy/diffuse after a couple of hours.

Lovely wine. An off note on the nose quickly blew off. Leather, graphite, blood, tobacco, raspberries, dried meat, peppery, a bit of chocolate. Drinking vey well now. Smoothed out a bit with and held up well to a bit of aged cheese.

Better performance than our prior 375 - more fruit and more secondary notes (eucalyptus, cigar). With that said, at least from splits, it's time to drink up. The oxidative aspects are less pronounced here than they were with our prior bottle, but they're there.

The 2000s - Two Decades On @ Jake's!: Aside from the Cristal 2000 and DP P2 2000, we drank the following 2000s side by side - Mouton, Lafite, Lalande, Sassicaia, Solaia & Tignanello.
Not sure if it is a bottle variation or damage (provenance is good) but this bombed for me tonight. Matured red fruits, dried plums, raisins, heat, spiced herbs, bramble, earthy. 2000 was a hot vintage but this was something else. I had called this as a Solaia, as I had a similar experience recently with the 2004 Solaia. Hope to give this another shot some day. NR (this came in last for me tonight)

really seductive aromas with dark purple fruit, spices and sweet smoke. Full-bodied and balanced wine with a very good mouthfeel. Pretty darker raspberry fruit and sweet tobacco. Cool spices. Here the interaction is unique and all components are in balance with each other. Lacks a little concentration and depth, but harmony is always very good. 93 points.

Started out stiff and tannic, with a quick decant and an hour, it started to soften to show a big masculine wine. it was less ready than the 2001 I had recently, but very enjoyable. Lots of Oak and Tannin...

First time I have had a really at its peak Sassicaia and super Tuscan would I say. The oak is well integrated but still shows a bit, smoky, grilled sesame, dark fruits and berries, mango, passion fruit, pine tree, and sadly that coconut after a bit of aeration... Palate is smooth, delicate, nice but short... drink now for sure... Very good wine, solid !

Upon opening a slight hint of cork on the nose along with farmyard and lots if depth. Pleased to say the cork has disappeared after a day in a small kiln bottle. Now just deep fruit (mainly cherries and other red berries), leather and barn. On the palate very smooth and rich, almost velvety. Nicely integrated tannins. The finish is full and reasonably long (feels slightly fizzy). A great wine at its peak. Drink up.

Glass: Riedel Vinum Syrah 1 glass poured with Coravin from new bottle. BTW: This wine is not that suited for Coravin, due to its massive amount of fine sediment. Let the pouring rest in the glass for at least 15min. Clear, deep garnet color with tawny rim. You should decant this bottle due to its fine sediment. Clean, medium+ intense, fully developed nose of a classic BDX blend with lots of red, deep fruit, leather, herbs, some tobacco and a bit of barn. Dry, with medium+, quite racy acidity and medium+ velvet tannin. On the palate lovely red fruit, pepper, leather and the oak only noticeable as a solid backbone. Very round and balanced, beautiful, silky texture. Finish is long and fruity and left traces of juicy ripe sour cherries on my palate. I am not a Supertuscan expert, but I guess this bottle is at its peak and will stay there for at least 5+ years, but won’t improve. 93-94

Pop and pour from a 375. In the glass, auburn at the rim, dark opaque brownish-purple at the core. On the nose, a mix of currants, cassis, and a reductive prune note, which carries through on the palate - a reasonable, if slightly over the hill wine, but I hope not a representative bottle given the tariff. If I had any in 750 format, this would make me want to check in on it.

Alpha Estate & Friends Dinner (Murano, London): We are not sure if this was a proper bottle. Not oxidised or corked or any noticeable fault , barring a touch of bret on the nose, but did not behave as we expected it too. Granted a few years since we tried this last ( Papies 93) but expected so much more. This was dry and short and not up to standard so we will refrain from rating. We do have a magnum hiding somewhere hopefully that would be more up to standard :)

Dark and deep nose. Pure beautiful cabernet fruit. Cassis more than stony fruits, This is fresh and deep with great clarity and focus. A sense of mineralogy. Good acidity, and some more savory and darker elements on the palate. Some tar/ licorice. Overall, a classically proportioned beautiful wine, that comes together into a greater whole. Harmonious. 94

2.5 hour decant allowed some Italian "barnyard" to blow off. Once it did, it showed tart cherry and menthol with a nice amount of plum on the palate. The nose is full of warm bright red fruit (hot vintage) with some spice.
Stunning! Drink now or hold. Can last a few more years, no problem.

A very enjoyable Sassicaia. Medium garnet. An intense nose of dark fruit like blackcurrant and blackberry with some clove and forest floor. Refreshing acidity and smooth tannins on the palate. Notes of blackcurrant, menthol, leaves and sweet spice.
Decanted for a good hour. Useful. At the beginning of its drinking window. The oak has been assimilated since we crossed paths before ( Papies 92 - 2nov11) , very elegant and classy wine. Good fruit, light earthy twist, good silky tannin. 5 years ago we felt like the oak was a let down and on this occasion the assimilation of oak has released this wine to sing. 93-94

decanted immediately prior to serving. Ripe but not at the same level as the Ornellaia. Smoky notes. A little more tannic (probably a decanting error), but acidity on the palate was significantly higher.

Drank this with Kerry at Cafe L'Europe in Sarasota ($20 corkage) to celebrate my birthday. Decanted for about 45 minutes, by which time it had just begun to open. Improved continually over the following hour and a half. Very mature-looking, with noticeable bricking and some amber around the edge. Displays a powerful, exotic nose that is filled with notes of sweet baking spices, lavender and dried herbs. Full-bodied, but very elegant in both weight and texture. Still offers a surprising amount of plum and dark currant fruit, along with touches of spice, cassis and molasses. Impeccably balanced, with a moderate acidity and silky, ultra-fine tannins that are perfectly integrated. Shows wonderful depth, intensity and length for such an elegant wine. So delicious, polished and refined. A beautiful Sassicaia from a less-than-stellar vintage year. 50+5+13+17+8=93
It is just starting to mature with elegant sassicaia nose, great depth, with cassis, grilled red peppers, blue berries. Palate is tight but very savoury great lenght, ripe but firm tannins. Will drink for at least another 15 years.
The 2000 Challenge (Le Petit Sommelier): The wine is full upfront and extrovert, ripe small black fruit, sweet spice, vanilla, a basket full or flowers, way more feminine than the 3 Bordeaux tried before, it also makes it more welcoming, round oak frame, toast, no rough edges here. Feels fully developed but no sings of being tired.
Great in the palate, full body and high intensity, big round tannins, nice balancing acidity, flavors copy the nose, overall sweet, silky texture, long finish.
Outstanding quality, drinking gloriously now but will hold. I have to admit that this one was the hardest to resist. I would definately buy again
Probablement légèrement sur son déclin mais cependant très agréable à voir. Le nez était assez discret et La texture en bouche très soyeuse. Des saveurs de champignons et de tabac.

A private tasting and dinner (Doorn, NL): Mature but lively appearance, lighter than the Solaia 2000 which preceded it; lovely freshness and primary fruit, pure Cabernet style, lighter than the more powerful and structured 1982 which followed, drinking well, fresh, bright, relatively light tannins, clean flavours, very good length, delicious red berry fruit. Remarkably youthful, not terribly concentrated but should age well on the strength of its impeccable balance. Drink now - 2025.
Cool and elegant nose, cassis, green herbs, mint. On the palate full bodied, red and dark berries, lots of tannin, long and fruity. Perhaps a little less complex than other vintages, more fruit in this one.
special in many regards and will easily go another 10-20 years; i would predict around 8-12 would be a sweet spot. hope to try again then.
gave it a 2 hours decant. food helped it. it's less primary then when i first sampled a year or two ago (at least this bottle was) and there's still enough weight for sure.
great bottle if you can find it at a reasonable price.

Drank this monster with some really good italian food. Really brought out the fruit and tannins. Dark fruits really show up in this wine. Finish was impressive. Felt a bit like its was hollow since we started with an Amarone first, but really complimented the food. This has plenty of time left in the cellar, so no rush to drink it.

Bottom neck. Bouteille carafée durant 2 heures avant de déguster. Couleur grenat sombre, moyennement limpide.

from half bottle. drank this about 3 years ago also from half bottle and the wine was very closed at that time, even after overnight decant. to my pleasant surprise this has changed substantially, what a great wine now. decanted for 5 hours, good grip, Backbone and tannins, in the right spot now, but I suggest this has potential to improve. 93p for now and my guess is for 95p in 3 years.

Beautiful nose of black jam, cedar plank, spice and light currant made for an eye-opening nose on the pour of a 3 hour decant. Color med-dark purple. Tight at first taste, we waited another 40 minutes then found fairly deep, rich fruits of black jam, roast blackberries, boysenberries and spice with a trace of currant and vanilla throughout 3-4 layers cradled in well integrated tannins. Drinking wonderfully now but should evolve measurably with another 3-4 years aging.

From 375 mL...Deep purple ruby in color. A nose of licorice, tobacco, cherries, violets and forest floor jump from the glass. Decanting helped coax some of the mid-palate out, as a rich bacon fat and stewed plums layer emerged. Great wine now, but I would give it more time!

Drank it recently. Showed almost no evolution in the colour. In the nose quite funky, leather, some earthy touches and black fruit. Incredibly silky in the mouth and a huge finish. Loved it. Much better than the 2003 which had some vegetal touches.

Misc Bordeaux (Frederiksberg): Flattering nose with mostly black currants and sewer but also a little black pepper and green bell-pepper. Dense black currant fruit and a hint of rust on the palate with a solid and well-structured balance. Leaves a polished and quite elegant impression. Full of red fruit when opened, which was full-on and uninhibited. With mixed berries (strwaberries, raspberries) and a bunch of peppers and spices. The nose developed to be more complex after an hour or two with some meaty notes and hints of green pepper. Flavours were fruity with some minerality to it (stone too). Decent amount of tannins still and a slight hint of age to it, but still refreshingly young for a 2000.

This was heavenly. My expectations had been lowered by some poor reviews of this vintage - plus I tend to think it's a shame when regional winemakers go 'international'. The bottle was a gift I've been cellaring for about five years, which I took to a restaurant and shared with friends. The velvety, hedonistic nose was pure Italy, the grip and structure was the equal of any claret I've drunk recently. It made me realise I've been way too blinkered about Supertuscans: they're so much more than Bordeaux clones.

Sassicaia and Ornellaia Masterclass at Decanter Fine Wine Encounter (Landmark Hotel, London): Medium to deep red, some brick at the edge. Nose of ripe blackcurrants, slightly sweetish notes, hints of blackberries and tar, flowery and aromatic notes, hints of eucalyptus, spice. Elegant and nuanced. Clearly developed, noticeably spicy. Palate with blackcurrants, slightly sweetish attack with red berry liqueur, medium(+) tannins, rather softened tannins, noticeable spice, some tar. Reasonably ready to drink, but would likely benefit from some more cellaring, and could take long cellaring. 92-93 p Actually slightly darker in colour than the 2000 Ornellaia. Comes across as slightly more foursquare than the 1998 Sassicaia.

Drunk over dinner at a lovely restaurant in Napoli. Excellent wine with well integrated blackberry on the nose and palate. Drinking well now, with fine tannins and similar characteristics to 04 Antinori Tignanello Toscana drunk the previous night, which we both preferred slightly.
We expected the Sass to have a little more complexity at 11 years of age. Would like to try side by side with the 04 Tignanello but at this stage would not again pay an extra 45 Euros at a restaurant for the Sass.

The nose had plums, currant and barnyard aromas. The palate was consistent with the nose, but leaned more toward plum and earth. This wine had a much weaker mouthfeel then I was led to believe from the nose. Medium bodied with a medium length finish. I was a bit underwhelmed by this wine. This was my first tasting of a Sassicaia, and I had high hopes. This was just not my style.

After that unbelievable 99 Sass a bit over a week ago, the 2000 is slightly disappointing, not nearly as open and flamboyant and despite 3 hours of decanting does not give that much. By all means its a nice bottle of wine with plenty of fruit and structure, might have to wait this one out for a while.

The Wine Summit 2007: Tenuta San Guido - Sassicaia - June 1, 2007 - 10:45 A.M. (The Post Hotel - Lake Louise, AB): Much darker than the previous wine – a wider pink rim; aromas needed coaxing – scented and penetrating dark berries and spice; full bodied and quite powerful on the palate; rich blend of currant and black cherry – edge of ground pepper; acute tannins lying beneath the fruit; huge coating of the palate; long, round finish with substance in the fruit.

I gave this a 92 only because I don't believe it to be their best showing, but still a wonderfully elegant wine for the vintage.
Beautifull ruby and garnet hues. Bouqet of figs and dark fruit. Plums and young but well constructed tannins dance on the tongue. Smooth and comforting. Viva Italia.

wine of the evening. beautiful dark red color. very exciting nose. lot of fruit. walking past a horse stable with a lot of fruit bushes on the side.. ripe fruit. there fire on the nose!! (hope its not the stable)
forest fruits, tickling, almost sparklng fruits. very fine intgrated wood. the vailla is saved for the last.. after the fruit, a little pepper, very nice acids very smooth tannins. there comes the vanilla as a desert. very nice... long after taste. al lot to tasted and those tasted are fragile, but so beautifully integrated. has potention, but not too long. think the peak is now to 5 years.

This was the only Supertuscan I tried that was not pimarily Sangiovese and it was by far the cream of the crop. This wine blew the 1997 Sassicaia away (a difficult task considered the superb growing conditions in 1997). Velvety and round with a smooth mouthfeel. Another wine which I did not want to pour out. Rich cherry and raspberry notes with a long finish. 95 points.

Better performance than our prior 375 - more fruit and more secondary notes (eucalyptus, cigar). With that said, at least from splits, it's time to drink up. The oxidative aspects are less pronounced here than they were with our prior bottle, but they're there.

Drink up.

Glass: Riedel Vinum Syrah
1 glass poured with Coravin from new bottle.

2.5 hour decant allowed some Italian "barnyard" to blow off. Once it did, it showed tart cherry and menthol with a nice amount of plum on the palate. The nose is full of warm bright red fruit (hot vintage) with some spice.

Bottom neck. Bouteille carafée durant 2 heures avant de déguster. Couleur grenat sombre, moyennement limpide.

Palate with blackcurrants, slightly sweetish attack with red berry liqueur, medium(+) tannins, rather softened tannins, noticeable spice, some tar. Reasonably ready to drink, but would likely benefit from some more cellaring, and could take long cellaring. 92-93 p
Actually slightly darker in colour than the 2000 Ornellaia. Comes across as slightly more foursquare than the 1998 Sassicaia.

Decanter Sassicaia & Ornellaia Masterclass (Landmark Hotel London): Deep garnet with medium to narrow rim. Nose is beautiful and bittersweet with black fruit, charcoal, roasted coffee, sweet spice, cedar and licorice. Also some green pepper notes. Texture is smooth. flavours include black olive, spicy notes, chocolate, leather, some herbaceous notes. Beautiful wine but lighter than what Sassicaia usually is.

Athens in November, Great food, some truffles and some great wine; 11/18/2011-11/20/2011 (Athens, Greece): Dark dense red in colour. On the nose the oak is still dominant with some fruit but the oak is overpowering. Round on the palate but to us the overoakiness spoilt the party. Shame really. Still a good 91-92 wine. We suggest one waits for the oak to integrate and hope.

Dirty raspberry. Dark cherry, cola, leather and light cinnamon and other baking spices.
Medium body on the palate. Some enjoyable heat. Liked this guy.

Bordeaux, Italy and a Burg in Minneapolis: Interesting wine with herbs, mushrooms, burnt rubber and a green streak. At first glance I thought the wine was slightly corked but not the case. I did not get any fruit out of the wine and it was hard to get past the green elements of the wine.

Old World Reds at Edina CC (Edina Country Club, MN): Nose: At first thought this could be slightly off but with air seemed to show up revealing dark fruit but also a persistant green quality that was really annoying. Palate: Good, spicy tannins with sweet dark fruits and a medium length finish. Would have possibly scored higher if not for the green quality of the nose.

Ruby color. Plenty of fruit still, but beginning to taste like a nicely aged wine. Complex enough for me, definitely some secondary cedar, spice flavors with the fruit. Well balanced, great with steak tonight.

Off the list at Gordon Ramsay, London. Decanted for about an hour prior to serving. Expressive aromas right of the bat with crushed blueberries, plum, spice and a wonderful earthy character. The palate was silky smooth with plenty of dark fruits and a nice earthy and peppery finish. The tannins are there, but totally integrated and smooth. Classy stuff.

After that unbelievable 99 Sass a bit over a week ago, the 2000 is slightly disappointing, not nearly as open and flamboyant and despite
3 hours of decanting does not give that much. By all means its a nice bottle of wine with plenty of fruit and structure, might have to wait this one out for a while.

I gave this a 92 only because I don't believe it to be their best showing, but still a
wonderfully elegant wine for the vintage.
Beautifull ruby and garnet hues. Bouqet of figs and dark fruit. Plums and young but well
constructed tannins dance on the tongue. Smooth and comforting. Viva Italia.

beautiful dark red color.
very exciting nose. lot of fruit. walking past a horse stable with a lot of fruit bushes on the side.. ripe fruit. there fire on the nose!! (hope its not the stable)
forest fruits, tickling, almost sparklng fruits. very fine intgrated wood. the vailla is saved for the last.. after the fruit, a little pepper, very nice acids very smooth tannins. there comes the vanilla as a desert. very nice... long after taste. al lot to tasted and those tasted are fragile, but so beautifully integrated. has potention, but not too long. think the peak is now to 5 years.
wow.. what a wine..
not the best sassicaia I had, but still. It was my first 2000 and I was impressed.. a bit surprised even.

95 points.
