  • From 750ml. Opened and poured. Whisky colour, bright, vibrant and no cloudiness. Initial nose had some sulphur obscuring the classic Yquem notes of candied fruits and Creme caramel. Palate was honeyed, rich, with some balancing acidity and very long. 24 hours later this was just so much better. Served with foie gras, this wine was much more balanced and richer. The nose was pure caramel. Finish was long and complex as only d'Yquem can seem to manage. Note to self: decant Yquem, young or old at least a few hours before drinking. Younger wines will benefit from extra oxygen and in older wines some of the stink can blow away to reveal complexity. This is classic Yquem, who seem to make outstanding wines in even mediocre vintages. No great hurry here and not dried out at all. It was more impressive than the 1971 Coutet it was paired with, despite 71 being a far better year. Thanks to my generous brother for opening these!

  • This was really really good, secondary characteristics were coming out by the boatload. Not a perfect wine, but very good to be sure!

  • Great Grapes for a Great Cause -- 3rd Annual; 5/7/2010-5/8/2010 (Mandarin Oriental, Washington DC): I only got a tiny pour of this as it had been opened the night before... a great elixir -- quite thick. still very youthful stone fruit and honey profile. I can't afford to get addicted to old Yquem, but it was wonderful to try this!

  • This wine looked like motor oil and had the same consistency too. Had close to 1cm of sediment in the bottom of the bottle as well.

It had a nose of sweet cheese, honey and it was slightly Madeira-like... It was extremely viscous and coated the entire mouth. There was flavors of marzipan, honey and buttered toast. It had a long lingering finish that seemed to go on for over 2 minutes...

This was by far one of the best experiences of my life and it was great sharing it with friends. I was very thankful to be there at the right time to enjoy this wine. Looking forward to enjoying the '82 sometime soon!

  • An incredibly generous gesture from a friend of Phil's to bring this along to share. This has been open for a while, the nose was deeply scented and consisted of caramel, burnt sugar, orange peel and almond. Luscious mouthfeel, the acid struggling a little bit to keep pace. I was immensely glad to have gotten the chance to try this.
