Palate: Honey, stone + tropical fruit (apricot, kumquat, lychee?). Full bodied and a bit sweet relative to the acid level, but i think this is expected. Definitely still on the young side. Medium+ length.
One of my first Sauternes experiences and it was really enjoyable! The nose might be the main attraction. I feel as though this could get a lot more interesting, especially with respect to the palate, with another 10y+ of age.

At Leura, NSW as an aperitif. This wine remains delicious in any setting with a golden barley-sugar colour and a rich nose of apricot, blood orange, cumquat jam, vanilla bean and spice. The palate is rich and round with delicious citrus and stone fruits, creme brulee and leatherwood honey characters that persist beautifully. There is plenty of grape tannin, minerality and acid evident here to make this wine a fine aperitif.

Subdued honey caramel on the nose, but with a huge hit of apricot, honey and marmalade to taste - very long with sugar, slightly burnt and tropical fruit hints going on and on. Not much in the way of development in the couple of years since my last bottle - enjoying the weight and clean fruit taste.

At family Christmas Lunch, Buddina, Sunshine Coast. This was opened with Christmas pudding and was both a wake-up for the palate and a Christmas joy. The wine showed a golden barley-sugar colour and a rich nose of apricot, blood orange, cumquat jam, vanilla bean and spice. The palate is rich and round with delicious citrus and stone fruits, creme brulee and leatherwood honey characters that persist beautifully and match the rich fruits of the pudding. Life is good.

From a half bottle for dessert, excellent state, not overly sweet, starts to be darker, nice salinity balanced with roasted almonds and peaches, very good length, absolutely delicious at the moment.

Opened by Jim Lester. 4th time I have had this wine and the weakest showing yet. Likely because this had been opened for a week. Lower acidity but nice tropical fruit. Not as good as the 2001 Lafaurie-Peyraguey that we also drank. 89 points but likely 3-4 points butt when first opened.

Half bottle, served with charcuterie, which I thought would be a good paring but didn't really do the either wine or many of the cured meats and soft cheeses justice. I think it would have gone better with a desert tray as there was plenty of acidic tension to cut through the sweetness. Still youthful to early maturity, better than the 2010 Guiraud I had a few months ago. Looking forward to future bottles to see how it evolves.

Very nice, showing mainly custard and slightly-tropical fruit on the nose. Orange blossom honey on the palate; very viscous, seemingly with a slight dearth of acid. A good, but not amazing, vintage of Suduiraut.

I'd be reluctant to say WOTN because the other wines were just as good. But this is a joy and in such good shape at 18 years. Gorgeous amber colour, huge nose of caramel, honey but also a mintier top note, like eucalyptus. Richly textured and opulent, but equally acidic and energetic. Long finish of hazelnuts and toasted almonds, with additional layers suggesting figs and orange zest. An absolute marvel.

Opened in the morning and drank in the evening. Big difference. Opened up nicely with notes of honey, caramel, roasted almonds, ripe peach. Lush and sweet and well balanced. Long finish, depth and complexity. Drink now with some air or hold. Outstanding. From 0.375

Somm note: Sauternes is wonderful with foie gras (of course), and with certain desserts (tarte tatin) and a good blue cheese (Roquefort, Stilton, Fourme d'Ambert, Maytag, Jasper Hill, etc). But, a great aged Sauternes like this '05 Ch. Suduiraut is perhaps best served by itself as a wine of meditation. _____________
Color: Medium-light gold amber. (From 375 ml.)
Nose: Beautiful, intense, perfumey nose. This Sauternes has aged well past fresh pear/peach/pineapple. This nose manifests spiced honey, creme brulee, and dried Seville orange. Amazing!
Pal: Full body, very good concentration, very sweet (of course), decent balancing acidiy, long finish. Utterly delicious!
Not quite Château d'Yquem concentration level, but what is? Absolutely delicious, regardless.
93-94 pts. At its mid-evolution peak (at least in 375 ml).
In a proper, cool cellar this 2005 Suduiraut will develop in interesting ways through 2035 - longer in 750 ml.

750ml. Medium bodied, traditional styling. Quiet nose on day 1, and palate is in its teen years: darkening in color and tone, honey, dry grass, marmalade, ripe white peach, hint of coconut. Less concentration than I'd hoped, likely will develop over a few days; will check back. 92+

Proefnotities/Punten: Tasted single blind at Southwold. This is closed on the nose with dried lychee and pineapple, but there is a hefty dose of SO2 here. The palate is much better, very pure botrytized fruit, honey, quince, honeysuckle.

Mid-gold. Nose of honey, apricot, candied orange peel. Unctuous, mouth-coating texture. Incredibly long on the finish, at least 30 seconds. Very nice acid backbone to provide the refreshment factor. Terrific. Is there a better pairing for crème brûlée? Not tonight!

From 375, 1/2 consumed on 10/13, the balance on 10/24. Golden hue.
Apricots and honey with some mandarin rind on the nose. Shows a sweet palate with minimal complexity. After a week open this tightened up nicely, seems less sweet and slightly more complex and savory.

Another Sauternes to end the evening and this was quite the treat. I knew what to expect as I have recently enjoyed the 2003 vintage, and this delivered.
Similar notes to the 2003 with baking spice, apricot, citrus, honey, caramel and dried fruit.
I felt that it was apparent that this was a slightly more youthful wine, though this may have just been in my head. A bit more unctuous mouthfeel with a buttery palate note.
This is refreshing and delicious. Will be revisiting this again in a few years time.

Wednesday Afternoon Wine Tasting (Kevin and Vicki's House): A nice treat to end the tasting! I find Suduiraut to be pretty spotty....sometimes, like 1989, they fail miserably and other times, like 2001, they knock out out of the park! This wine actually exceeded my low expectations! It showed all the typical hallmarks of a good Sauternes, i.e., stone fruit, honeycomb, and orange marmalade, with hints of vanilla. However, the wine, while not at all cloying, could have had more acidity to take it to the next level. A solid 93 and a great ending to a great tasting with some great friends!

Pnp. Probably the best Sauterne I've had. The right amount of sweetness and acid. Beautiful nose. Delicious complex palate and a long finish. Notes dried apricots and flowers. Got the stuffing to go longer but it's about perfect now

From 375. This came across as having much less concentration of flavors, not unlike a second wine. Cork seemed fine. I don't think it was representative. as I have had a number of these and have generally showed much better than this.

Peach, apricot, light honey in the nose. Very rich, full bodied. Pineapple, quince marmalade, botrytis spice. Little low on acid to carry the considerable sweetness. Light honey and marmalade finish.

Just gets better and better but remaining bottles fewer and fewer. Paired with Bleu d’Auvergne this time at suggestion of cheesemaker. Not something I would ever have thought of, but stunning
Very lucky to have scored two 750 mL sized bottles from a wine shop, and it's always a roll of the dice what conditions these would be in with back vintages. Upon inspecting the bottle, noticed some particulates inside the bottle (some say wine diamonds, some say tartrates, in any case they are a result of the wine making process and temperature conditions, an indicator of the quality, I'd be surprised if top tier Sauternes don't have this).
Took some advice from tastingbook and decided to open one 750 mL splash decant, and let it sit for an hour (some suggested 4 hours). I tasted a very small amount prior to pouring in the decanter and noted very high acidity and very strong spicy notes that was pepper and ginger, although this was right after the bottle was kept in the refrigerator.
Airing it in the decanter for an hour was the right call. However this caused the particulates upon pouring back in the bottle to soften and loosen, so they ended up suspending inside the bottle and never sunk to the bottom. (I did not filter them out and was prepared to explain to guests what the particulates were if questioned).
Decanting was the right call, as this was shared with 8 people as a digestif, and the bottle was kept outside of refrigeration and allowed to come back up in temperature, perfectly lightly chilled at the time of pouring into wine glasses. The house dessert was a whipped tofu mousse with brown sugar syrup, and the decanting mellowed out any harsh acidity as well as sharp spicy notes (there was still a little), and the nose was a medley of beautiful dried fruits, raisins, some floral characters, and as typical for this vintage, wonderful botrytis aromas (but not overpowering). It smelled more sweet than it tasted (sweet but not too sweet) and based on past experience, and last night, the pairing with a light dessert was just right. This Suduiraut 2005 was a big hit last night with everyone, perfect moment, timing, profile, to close a wonderful evening. If there was a rich flavored flourless cheesecake of some sort with a hint of a savory or a roasted nutty/earthy seasoning (perhaps a roasted green tea panna cotta), it would have been super fun and interesting for a pairing, I would think.

My 2 1/2 year old dropped this on the concrete basement floor - she was so excited to see vino de oro. Fortunately, there was a taste left in the neck of the bottle which i poured into a glass for later in the evening - made me remember how great Sauternes can be, as it’s been years.

Classics and Curiosities: At the end of 4 hours of tasting, I didn't really so much as make mental notes, but this was absolutely fabulous and one of the consensus standouts. Plenty of freshness to cut against the orange marmalade, creme brulee, spicy honey, classic Sauternes all the way. 93+

Very lucky so far to have tasted this year Chateau Suduiraut 2007, 2001, and 2005, all from 375 mL but during different times for each (having those side by side would have been legendary). Of the 3, I would say 2005 is my most favorite so far, cementing this producer quickly as one of my most favorite premier cru Sauternes.
Lightly chilled is the best serving temperature, but once you give it 5 to 10 minutes in the glass it blossoms with a range of dried fruit like apricots, peach, wonderful floral notes, honey and just the right pitch of botrytis (you find more of that note in 2001), but without that gingery spice found in some other vintages. The viscosity and texture are outstanding, very thick and delicious mouthfeel, yet not cloyingly sweet (although that is subjective). This can easily age for longer, but it is in such a delightful spot right now, and is so incredibly sexy. For some interesting reason, and perhaps it is a function of the vintage, much like Chateau d'Yquem 2005, I found this Suduiraut 2005 also fairly easy to pair with certain desserts, so long as the dessert is not too sweet.

As ever, a stupendous wine. Difficult to find quite the right accompaniment so we choose to drink it alone after dinner, enjoying the multiple layers of taste and texture. Too sweet? Not for us. There is nothing quite like that botryrised taste.
Lunch at Nicolas. Complimentary pour from Chef. Appearance is clear, medium intensity, gold colour. Legs. Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of apricots, blood orange, honey, spice. Developing. On the palate, sweet, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of apricot, orange marmalade, nuttiness, botrytis spice. Medium+ finish. Very good quality. Hasn't developed the layered aged complexity yet. Still quite straight but focused and enjoyable. Good future, if the acidity holds.

Cloyingly sweet apple and pear flavors with a syrupy viscosity that craves a bit more acid for balance. Definitely serve with a dessert that does not have much sugar, or a cheese course or plain cheesecake. We tried it with an apple tart, and although the flavors matched well, just too much sugar.

Access via coravin. Dark amber in color, on the nose, honey and yellow stone fruits. Upon drinking waves and waves of honeyed tropical fruits, white stone fruits, orange, and vanilla caramel. A bit on the viscous side, and maybe lacking just a bit in acidity, but the botrytis spice is still apparent. All in all, just delicious, although one glass was enough to scratch the itch. Many years left and a nice qpr.

A Thanksgiving pudding wine treat that two days later after opening is still performing as the star that it is! Almost amber in color now (think Jurassic park trapped-mosquito-in-amber) with a great nose of classic honeycomb, some vanilla and toasted light caramel coming through. Such a lovel palette. Viscous of course, and yes syrup to some degree, but in a good way. Like the best Canadian maple syrup - when it’s good it is great in all it’s sweet glory! I also have some Chateau Guiraud from this vintage but in my view the Suduiraut takes the proverbial biscuit.

I've been sleeping on 05 Suduiraut. Honey, candied peach, spices, brown sugar, and just a hint of nuttiness. None of the bitterness or heat on the finish that I'm used to (got that from the vaunted 01 Suduiraut and even the 88 Rieussec). Very clean, rich, and tasty. I could drink this with no issues. Fantastic showing.

Nice apricot and peach marmalade qualities on the nose, orange blossom honey underwritten by yellow peach slices in syrup on the palate, all followed up with with some oak toast and orange marmalade notes on lip smacking finish. Still has plenty of acidity while keeping a full and rich intensity. Has the palate development from sip to sip, but seems to have lost its tropical complexity over time. Nitpicking for sure as the citrus leaves no gaps, but Suduiraut plays in the big leagues and gets judged accordingly. A (93) evaluation with 5 375's left for further evaluation.

The 2005 Suduiraut opens with a golden barley-sugar colour and a rich nose of apricot, blood orange, cumquat jam and vanilla bean. The palate is rich and round with delicious citrus and stone fruits, creme brulee and honey characters that seem initially a little more simple than great but by day 3 there is a beautiful Christmas cake/glace fruit touch that is both alluring and persistent. This is lovely wine that seems on track to further evolution.

2005 Sauternes Horizontal; 1/25/2020-1/26/2020 (Millbrae, CA): From 375mL. Light golden; expansive aroma with subtle depth and complexity, mango, slight vanilla, integrated botrytis spice; palate is rich but not heavy, integrated peach and some orange peel through the midpalate, some vanilla oak, medium acidity for freshness and balance, medium alcohol; finish is medium length and a bit shorter than expected given how well the rest of this is put together. Consistent with my previous bottles, this is still youthful and will open up well over a few days with air. A notable step up over the respectable '05 Doisy Vedrines. 90-92 Day 3: Youthful, tropical fruit, oak is integrated now. This is a beautiful elegant wine with easily decades in front of it. 92++ Day 10: Balanced, elegant, rich but fresh, though still sweet, apricot, integrated oak. Really lovely and still improving. 92-93.

Popped and poured from split. This is an ambered-gold wine. On the nose, I get honey, orange peel, old apples, and butter melting on hot toast. In the mouth, this is smooth with some caramelized oxidization, a touch of vanilla, and some slight spice – the overall impression is soft and light-footed. The finish amps up with lingering marshmallow and orange pulp notes. Overall, this is showing its age but also its breed, which is a very nice combo. Yet at the same time, this is subtle and not as heavy as some other Sauternes I’ve had recently. It’s a winner. 92 points.

Turning golden now as it hits middle age. Strong legs as one would expect, and the usual sweet fruit of Mellon and honey and even peach on the nose. Quite a “thick” mouth feel - not quite syrupy but close. Am a big fan of this Chateaux (my wife and I visited in summer 18 just after they had sadly had a fire that destroyed a fair bit of the chateau roof.). Such good.l value for money compared to its neighbor only 1km away (yquem). However Not as interesting as the previous bottle I had earlier in the year. Still have quite a few bottles left so will see how it evolves and if it moves on to a place that is more interesting.

I love this. Make no mistake, this is an unctuous, candied fruit style of Sauternes. Look elsewhere if you are looking for acidity. Brown sugar, honey, and even tastes like pineapple upside down cake as mentioned earlier. Dessert in a glass.

Really drinking well now. Becoming honey in color, nose is stronger pineapple and sweet jus of raspberry, with its great vanilla always there. Palette has really stepped up a notch and multi-layered. Once gain shows how keeping these sauternes to allow them to truly develop is well worth the effort. For a wine I paid only $30 for a half bottle it still amazes me how cheap they are. Sad for the winemakers that Sauterns are so lacking in global appeal - great for the few of us dedicated fans!

The 2005 Suduiraut is a very rich bottle of Sauterne with a golden barley-sugar colour and a rich nose of apricot, blood orange, cumquat jam and vanilla bean. The palate is rich and round with delicious fruit, creme brulee and honey characters with just a little bias towards the richness on the finish rather than the acid of the best years. Lovely now with fresh fruit based desserts.

Orange-gold. Fresh, lively nose - bouquet certainly suggests a wine that's significantly younger. Fairly thick in the mouth, but with some acidity to cut through the texture. Very good length. Well balanced. I get the feeling that it's in its sweet spot at the moment (no pun intended). No hurry, but if you prefer your Sauternes on the younger side, without the more developed characters, hit this baby now.

Berry Brothers 2017 Bordeaux en primeur (plus back vintages) Lindley Hall, London (Lindley Hall, London): I was very curious to taste this as I heard it recently won the 05 sweet wine at a merchant tasting with many known wine critics present beating Yquem and all others. I really wanted to be thrilled by this wine. The truth is that it is a hugely interesting wine. Incredibly perfumed, intriguing and lots going on but it ended with a pronounced lavender taste/note that I found borderline sickening. It might be a great sweet wine in many people's book but it was simply not my flavor profile. I liked all other sweet wines tasted more. So I am reflecting this in the score as after all it is reflecting my personal taste. But do try for yourself.

Honey, apricot and a wide variety of expressive tropical notes on the nose. Close to full bodied (13.5% ABV) and quite rich, especially through the middle. Orange, pineapple and honey upfront, with additional honey, deep orange and a mix of tropical notes (especially pineapple) through the middle. Backside pulls in some golden apple, acidity/tannins and some hints of coconut and spices along with minerals on the finish. The fruit was beautiful and the concentration was certainly there. It just felt like this wine needed a little more acidity/structure to provide the contrast to the richer fruit notes and carry it to the next level. This is by no means a flabby, overly sweet/honeyed wine, just needed a bit more structure to get it to the next level. I'd probably hold onto these a bit longer as some additional time will certainly allow the balance to improve. Felt like there was a lot of depth through the middle that could still be expressed.

Celebration of R & L: (Spago): Off the list at Spago. From 375mL. Not a sweet wine lover by any means, but thought this was exceptional and is a wonderful value. Compared to '05 Climens I had recently, this is fresher, more open knit, and less cloying despite its rich flavors. Conventional wisdom is to err on the side of having your dessert wine be more sweet than the desserts, but because of this wines's freshness, it felt more like an on par match with the smorgasbord of desserts on offer tonight (which is a good thing). A little goes a long way.

I'll defer to some prior notes here about this being in an awkward phase, as it really didn't do much for me. A lovely nose of spice and a bit of a nutty component but the mid palate was quite flat, the finish was interesting with a hint of bitterness but no real freshness or lift. Big on honey and caramel but little fruit.
I'm not experienced enough with either this Chateau or how Sauternes age in general to predict it's trajectory, but for me, today, it needed more freshness at least.

From a 375. Golden color, appropriate for its age; nose is aromatic, tropical fruit, plenty of botrytis spice, still some vanilla, oak from youth; palate is rich, full bodied, medium sweetness, acidity is moderate and isn't as bracing as I remember it young, orange peel bitterness in midpalate; finish is medium-long with some oak. The aromatics on this are still very youthful, but the palate is in an awkward middle phase. Still enjoyable, but I think this will develop into a much better wine in 10 years. 92+ Day 2: Aromatics still have plenty of tropical fruit, but the oak has significantly integrated, lovely spice; palate is rich, full bodied, slight bitterness and heat through the midpalate. Next bottle in at least 5, probably better in 10 years for more integration and more developed character. I do think I can see beyond the awkwardness today to a really fine wine, with time. Day 3: Served a bit more chilled, but it comes across largely the same as before.

Nice nose, tropical aromas with pineapple predominant and some caramel notes as well. Not overly sweet. Drinking well at this stage. Not the most layered of Sauternes but very enjoyable. Drank it with a flan with a lightly sweetened caramel sauce and the pairing was perfect.

Delicious, but disappointed nonetheless. Loren's "flabby" and Rollerball's "gooey" are great descriptors. Masses of tropical fruits and coconut, but the lack of noticeable acidity and tension has this toeing the line between a wine and an ice cream topping. There is a little botrytis spice peeking out at the end that foils the syrup-y character. Again, this is a delicious wine and we'll drink every last drop, but was definitely expecting more refinement from this producer.

From half bottle. Always a joy to try these wines in a "younger" state. At 12yrs old this is definitely showing some evolution but still on the brigth side with tropical fruits, light honey. Round and smooth wine and not very heavy on the botrytis, more tropical . Good wine could use a bit more depth and definitely with a lot of life ahead. 91-92 for now

Quite contrary to my last note, this bottle (375) seemed more advanced in age, with deep caramel and stewed apricot flavors. Would have pegged it much older than '05 if served blind. Still, just enough acid to hold up to the sweetness, and an enjoyable bottle. 92ish.

Rounded and waxy on the nose. From a half bottle fairly developed. Drinking well now. Medium sweet and intense. Moderate length. Very ripe, rich and inviting if not the most complex.

nice peach and honey. still very youthful. although very tasty, this showed in a bit of an awkward stage, as the secondary is not yet kicking in, but the primary fruit seemed a touch muffled. hold.

From 375. Ligter than the 2003 and 2001, with less pronounced botrytis spice. Nevertheless, a very nice Sauternes, and With a number more bottles on hand I look forward to following its evolution over the next decade or two.

Last tasting was completely unjustifiably low. After corking and putting in the fridge, I had a few gulps and realized I was wrong. This wine is beautiful. It benefits from a slight chill.

This has liqourice, anis, liche and peach on max! The anis is exceptional! Has great acidity to hold everything into place so it doesn't get "just" sweet.
Delicious. Goes very well with some sea buckthorn surprise or bitter/citrusdriven desserts
This has a lot of potential. Cellar for another two decades and you are rewarded

Front loaded sweetness which really took me by surprise. Very, very sweet. in comparison with waitroses in partnership with Sud, I'm quite confused. The nose is very quiet, almost dumb. Makes the roquefort taste like chocolate. This is very very strange Sauternes. It is a bit like watching the Princess alight from her carriage, walk gracefully for a few yards and then fall into a giant puddle of treacle. As she climbs out of the puddle, her hair a mass of sticky goo, her beloved Prince looking on in horror. The beauty has changed into one of the ugly sisters and Cinderella is left at hone wondering what may have been.

From a 375. Over two nights. Consistent notes. This is a knockout. Vibrant, racy. Honeycomb, apricot. Sweetness well balanced. On night two, some of the unctuousness has subsided and given way to a beautifully balanced sweetie. Acidity is perfect, leading to a juicy long finish.

(Decanter FWE 2016) :: Alongside the '10 & '13. Tried the Suduiraut after the Coutet, and found them more feminine and less dense and concentrated. Real elegance in these wines. TN: Fresh and balanced, with a tropical fruit panoply, honey comb and nutty undertones. Elegant and light on its feet. Wonderful balance.

From half bottle. Rich golden color with incredibly long legs. Some petrol at first, but disappeared within a minute to reveal scents of dark honey and fresh resin. Incredibly dense and creamy on the palate with huge flavor of honey and caramel. Long and creamy finish. Great experience.

Drank one bottle - dropped and broke another on the tile floor. Really nice wine. Tropical, fresh and very tasty. Wonderful honey, apricot, pineapple taste. Smelled a little honeysuckle in there. Golden brown color. Did not drink cold. Opened and sit for an hour and it was the right decision. had a 375 so it went in a flash.

WineFest in Toronto (Mike Grammer); 7/10/2016-7/12/2016 (Mike Grammer's (parents home) in Toronto): Probably my least favorite of the recent bottlings but still quite good. The nose has apricots and honey. The spice element in so many of these is not present. On the palate, this was a bit flabby compared to the others. It also had a bitter note on the finish. That is, of course, nit picking, as this wine is outstanding. I mention it to distinguish between the others in this vertical. Really a wonderful wine.

Sunday lunch. Golden colour. Delicious nose of cumquat, apricot, honey, orange blossom, French butter. Intense palate with succulent fruit with plenty of botrytis character. Fine finish just a little round and without the level of 'cut' to be great. Delicious and decadent - good to have while the 01 matures into something better !

Shea Vineyard Pinot Noir Tasting (Gary's Place): Light gold color. Drank a 40ml pour from a 375ml over 30 minutes. This was delightful, pineapple, tangerine, pear, white flowers on the nose. Tangy and zippy on the palate, medium body, quince, long, lovely and refined. 93+(+)pts. And yes, this was the best pairing with the stilton, the Port did not work at all.

Medium golden. Rich and unctuous, but we would have liked more acidity to back up the impressively viscous and spicy flavors. Still, very nice over four nights.

TTTG Italy (Coventry, CT): From a 375. A lot of spice, good botrytis, and stone fruit. Very nice nose. Lots of sugar and spice on the palate; perhaps just a bit low on acidity, though there is medium acidity to balance the sweetness and spice. Quite rich. Great potential. It is drinking fine now, but I expect it to improve over the next 10+ years.

Thick, unctuous, a bit on the sweet nectary-side. Unusual taste of super-ripe instances of the common Sauternes flavors -- intense, jammy ripe pineapple, concentrated ripe apricot, etc. A rare hint of graham-cracker note adds to the interesting complex of flavors. Still lively and fresh, has many years to go. No hint of the signs of oxidation and age that can take their toll on fruity freshness. The creme brulée, honey and molasses stage is a long way off. Not even close to the magnificent 2001 or 2009 Suduirauts, is nonetheless one of the better offerings from this chateau in recent years.

Still quite young, decanted 4 hours in advance, this is still young, fresh and lively. Loads of pineapple, apricot, vanilla and honey in the perfume. The wine is unctuous in texture and long in the finish.

Lovely creme brûlée aromas with tropical fruits. Lush rich ripe velvety mouthfeel. Quite succulent and dense, round and fat. Very fine, yet missing brightness or acid support, so comes across a bit flabby.

Tasted next to the 2009. On the nose marzipan, honeyed fruit, burnt sugar. Rich and a little heavy on the palate, this seems very sweet and could do with a bit more of acidity. Lacking some of the vibrance and complexity of the 2009, but still excellent. Lingering finish. 92-94

Not quite as decadent as the 2003, this soars into weightlessness on the creamy rich and plenty sweet finish of caramel, forest honey, and dried apricot. Just enough lift to keep this gliding over your saturated palate. Class, elegance, and a bit of hedonistic power. One of the most astounding bargains in the fine wine world..

From a 375. This is absolutely singing. Right out of the box bursts a huge whiff of honeycomb. Its particularly distinctive for young Sauternes, at least for my tastes. This has a vibrancy and freshness that is surprising but not really at all. Such well made sweet wines should last decades, so a wine with 10 years of age is still very young. The tropical fruits leap out of the glass. Honey on the palate. Acidity is perfect, leading to a juicy long finish. Drink 'em if you got 'em in quantity - otherwise I'd probably hold for a few more years.

Very good, but expected more. The acidity was not quite up to the level of sweetness. That said, amazing flavors of honey, stone fruit, and petrol. Rich, syrupy mouthfeel, long finish. Great with foie, but as I said, some additional acidity would be welcome.

Properly stored from purchase until consumed. Initial bouquet was subdued, but blossomed as the wine warmed up a bit. Serve this wine at cellar temperature, NOT at refrigerator temp, and it is lovely botrytis- nosed apricot honey perfection.

Orange blossom on the nose; on the palate, orange rind, apricot, and yellow peach, with moderate sweetness and moderate acidity. This was not as complex as I was hoping for, and the acidity did not cut through the sugar as sharply as I would have liked, although this is a very well-made wine. Perhaps I have been spoiled by 2001 Sauternes.

Chablis, Dom. Laurent, Suduiraut, Madeira (John V.'s): A great showing for this wine. John thought it a bit flabby, and perhaps, but I still thought it outstanding. Deeper gold in color. The nose is great with burnt orange and honey. Very reminiscent of a 2001 I had last weekend. The palate is a bit sugary in texture. Slightly sweet. Blood oranges and honey. Long, long finish. Very nice wine.

At dinner at the Il Boscareto restaurant. 3 days in Pidemont, almost 100 great local wines tasted, it’s time for the final & last wine of the trip, and we decided that it had to be a French one, to kind of round things out. A very good finish to a lovely dinner at Il Boscareto. On the nose botrytis, saffron, bitter orange, honey, orange and some nice chemical glue. On the palate this is sugary, sweet, honeyed with sweet apricots and tropical fruits. Quite long and a good Sauternes indeed. Still on the younger side. (92 – 94)

Rätt kraftfull intensiv doft med honung, saffran, gul frukt och lite av kanderat äpple. Även i smaken väldigt kraftfull och intensivt med en fint integrerad botrytis ton och en väldigt lång eftersmak
luscious texture; great ripe yellow peach and mango followed by lychee, citrus and others; honey; moderate acidity manages to keep up with all of this; lovely finish; easily beat out the 2005 guiraud that it was paired with.

New Years Eve Celebration Offline (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Medium gold color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. The nose shows orange peel, orange, lots of honeysuckle. Thanks Luis. 94+(+)pts.

Consumed at the end of the Snooth PN Throwdown. Although my palate should have been dulled, this cut through like a laser scalpel. I'm not usually a big fan of stickies, but I almost consumed this single-handedly. Rich and sweet but not at all cloying, laser acids and honeyed fruits. Glad I have another half and wish I had gone all in for a sixer.

Oh my. Lovely stuff, and to think that is has some way still to go is tantalizing. Nose is restrained, and pallet is the big hit with this one - multiple layers of sweet fruit along with almond and vanilla. A bit hit with all who tasted, and in combo with two traditional European un-baked marscaponne cheesecakes it was a match made in heaven!

Lots of bortrisis and strong pinapple flavours. A fat Suduiraut wine, reminding me of the 1990, albeit I think this is weaker and less interesting than many other recent vintages (2001, 2006, 2007, etc)

Still learning about Sauternes. I am uncertain whether I can give a fair score, as I find it more difficult to discern nuance in sweet, dessert wines than in red wines. This one has intense sweetness combined with a citrus flavors. The combination with a good Gorgonzola was excellent as usual.

Classic nose of honey and peach with a good hit of saffron. The palate was just as intense, with concentrated flavour. White and yellow pit fruit, pure honey... and again with some light cinnamon and large saffron. I found the ensemble very good but missing a little balance, and this might have benefited from a bit more acidity.

We enjoyed this for Valentine's Day (yes a day early). The taste reminded us both of honey, with undertones of green apple, pear and peach. We didn't sense pineapple or coconut. The acidity struck us as mild, so the smoothness was the dominant sense. Wonderfully crafted and fully enjoyed and appreciated.

I still don't feel comfortable scoring a Sauternes. I will say this one tasted great all by itself and it was an amazing match to the Rouquefort I paried it with. The contrast between the saltiness of the cheese and the sweetness of this Sauternes was a match made for pleasure. Color was much darker than other Sauternes I have had, even of the same vintage.

Saturday Bordeaux Tasting (SF Wine Trading Company): Light golden color. Apricots and butterscotch without much botrytis signature. Loads of caramel, honey, Fuji apples, honeydews, passion fruits, pineapples, and overly ripe pears in the nose and on the palate; the finish was very long like forever (too much in a sip?); a very well made dessert wine, a bit too sweet to me, but just my personal opinion, 92-93 points.

Infanticide!!! (Publican, Chicago IL): nose: while it was on the tight side, there were still beautiful aromatics of nectarines, apricots, white florals, pears and honey tones. Very good depth to it as well.
taste: full bodied with medium+ acidity that was refreshing and noticeable. There is a nice plump quality to the tones of nectarines, apricots, pears and honey tones.
overall: While there's a lot of baby fat to shed, this is still really enjoyable right now. While it's full bodied, it does have a bit of a deft touch to it that shows off some real class.

From 375 ml bottle. Dried apricot and honey were the main aromas when opened. Nuances of smoke and ginger slowly appear as time went by. On the palate, rich and decadent sweetness, one of the sweetest Sauternes I have tasted! (Haven't got the chance to taste a Yquem yet at the moment) Acidity is somewhat low compared to its sweetness which made it a little bit too cloying. Finish is moderately long. Balance was good at first but alcohol heat is higher than preferred after the wine starts getting warm which keeps the score lower. 7/10 on my 10 point scale.

Rich, lush, forward and complex, this is loaded with honey, cumquats, marmalade and lavender. It is voluminous and heady and the acidity just cleans up enough on the finish to keep everything in check. Worked well with a creamy piece of St Agur.

Popped and poured. Nose of apricot, dried mango, dried pineapple, spice, honey. On the palate, apricot, honey, pineapple, orange peel, spice. The herbal streak that was there when this was younger is gone now. Finishes with nice lift. Should probably let these age, but I love young Sauternes.
Way too young. For those who enjoy drinking Sauternes early on, I'd stick to conventional windows on this one. All the pieces are there for a long life. Score unreflective of potential for improvement.

Really became something special on day two. Wonderfully intoxicating nose of peaches, apricots, honey, almond liqueur. Extremely long-lasting flavors, mouth coating texture, and just enough acid to say "I'm Sauternes, dammit, not Aunt Jemima." But on day one it was an underwhelming sugar bomb. Cellar time will be rewarded.

Bright yellow colour. Spicy nose of botrytis, clover, and melon. On the palate, notes of marmalade, spice, and baked apple. A slight hint of burnt sugar detracts from the otherwise delicious palate. The most prominent feature is the immensely fat texture, like coating your mouth with duck fat (which is a good thing). Slightly lacking in acidity, this already feels not too fresh. Medium finish. Indulgent and hedonistic.

Christening my new Riedel sommelier sauternes glasses with this wine. From a 375. Quite a young wine. Nose is very complex with lots of botrytis spice, a bit of musk, and a range of aromas from subtle melon to in-your-face tropical fruit. Palate shows great complexity with waves of flavor. Starts off somewhat smooth and fruity. Then after a few seconds, the spice washes over the palate and gradually builds. The finish starts to really emphasize the tongue-tingling acidity which lasts throughout the finish. It still has a lot of sweet baby fat which needs to integrate to make it a crisper wine, but I think that will come with time. Also, I'm hoping that time will help the fruits stand out a bit more against the background, instead of the kind of combined cooked/pie-flavors that I'm getting right now. Excellent.

We shared this for an "Open the Bottle of Wine" Night. Once again it was spectacular. I really love Suduiraut. These two bottles were yet another great example, with peach, honey, nectarine, brown sugar, and a subdued floral note. could use a tiny tiny bit more acidity, but this was not cloying, just needed a little more refreshment. Great bargain too at ~$25/split.

Crazy nose and pallate of Coconut and creme brulee, honey, and bees wax, cotton candy, burnt cane sugar, toasted praline. Unreal, brought tears to my eyes with the mile long finish. Will buy this one again soon.

Honey, tropical fruits, petrol on the nose. Thick and viscous, with candied orchard and tropical white fruit flavors that are complex. This was a bit syrupy, and left me wanting more acidic tang. This is opulent stuff, however, and it finishes with some length, even if it is heavyset.

Toffee, toasted caramel and creme brulee on the nose. Nice weight on the palate, with sweet caramel flavors. Expected a little more acidity but this is certainly not cloying. Finishes long. Very nice.

WFA Bordeaux 2005/2006 Tasting by the Wine Review (Suntec Convention Centre, Singapore): Really, really nice Sauternes. Nose was the most layered and complex of the sweets on show. Marzipan notes were mixed with coconut, chalky mineral and a little citrus lift from ripe lemon tones. Palate was rich but balanced, with mouthfilling flavours of honey and nectar, along with more marzipan and a touch of flowers. The long, sappy finish had just that touch of chalk in there. A very complete wine with lots of upside in the years to come. I liked this.

This was one one of seven (2005, 03 and 01 of of Suduiraut and 2005's of Rieussec, Doisy Vedrines, Rabaud Promis, de Malle) in a Sauternes blind tasting and was placed as number three. This is a very good effort but I would still have expected more from this wine. Classic botrytis on the nose and good acidity on the palate - this wine will develop to a higher rating. I am not sure this was a perfect bottle....

Bordeaux and Burgers Brithday Bash; 11/21/2008-11/23/2008: This was, of course, infanticide. But wanted to try this side by side with the 1970 Suduiraut. The 2005 was a light gold color. Lemon and honey in the nose. There was a noticeable acidity, medium fruit. This was very good. I think it will be worth trying in at least another decade.

Breathtaking...There is a strong scent of botrytis blended in with scents of tropical fruits, lemons, honey, and minerals. In the mouth there is a to-die-for feel as flavors of apricots, lemon drops, honey, and minerals play out over a very very long finish...This is an extraordinary Sauternes!

Rich and full and rollicking! This wine blends orange zest and pineapple aromas in a very nuanced palate with pear, pineapple and botrytis spice. Fine texture, with layers of flavor and a smooth, fine finish. Tasted twice from barrel and again from bottle with similar notes. Bravo!

2005 Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux Tasting (Drake Hotel, Chicago, Illinois): About the 10th Suduiraut I have had. pale white color, just a tiny tinge of gold; nose remains closed at first then tropical fresh fruit impressions, peaches -more than pineapple- (but neads more time in the bottle), on the palate the wine impresses even more with just a slight touch of oak, very elegant, sweet and velvet like; superb acidity. very long and clean aftertaste, very complex. a big structured wine yet with lots of finesse. top flight. needs time. 96+

BORDEAUX 2005 / Sauternes tasted in 2006 (Bordeaux): Orange zest and pineapple aromas precede a very nuanced palate with pear and pineapple plus botrytis spice. Nose: Honey, apricot, ginger, white flowers, creme brulee, sweet pastry, vanilla, beeswax.

Some 2005 Sauternes: More primary but very powerful nose - sweet honey, orange rind. Also fairly primary but intense, sweet, honeyed fruit. Long tingling finish. Mouth watering. Deeper but not at all heavy. Very good.

Day 3: Youthful, tropical fruit, oak is integrated now. This is a beautiful elegant wine with easily decades in front of it. 92++
Day 10: Balanced, elegant, rich but fresh, though still sweet, apricot, integrated oak.

The palate is rich and round with delicious fruit, creme brulee and honey characters with just a little bias towards the richness on the finish rather than the acid of the best years.

Day 2: Aromatics still have plenty of tropical fruit, but the oak has significantly integrated, lovely spice; palate is rich, full bodied, slight bitterness and heat through the midpalate. Next bottle in at least 5, probably better in 10 years for more integration and more developed character. I do think I can see beyond the awkwardness today to a really fine wine, with time.
Day 3: Served a bit more chilled, but it comes across largely the same as before.

Golden.
Mjuffingly huge nose with fine botrytis and saffron swirling with honey, dried apricots and some bitter almonds.
Coming around on the palate, but still very young. High sugar level beautifully balanced by dancing acids. Rich, concentrated, deep and wide wine in a beautiful geometry. Superbly delicious today, will become a monster of a great wine.
This wine will really be something down the road. 4 btls to hide deep in the cellar. I think at least 15 years.

Excellent.
