Popped and poured to celebrate a pretty cool personal and professional achievement; enjoyed over a two hour period. This particular bottle has been stored in my cellar since release. The 2004 “La Grande Dame” pours a brilliant yellow color with medium+ viscosity and a persistent mousse of fine bubbles. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of golden raspberry, Meyer lemon, some apple, some brioche and nuts; just a touch oxidative. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. However, I feel compelled to share that this gave me the overall impression of a sort of liquid lemon-raspberry custard croissant with shaved almonds on top. It was awesome. The finish was long and there is some palpable density in this wine. So much so that I think these easily have another 10-15 years in them. That being said, this was yummy and I wouldn’t hesitate to enjoy now.

Very citrus, lemoncurd, clementin, chalc, riesling petroleum. Fresh and refreshing. Would be great as a champagne sorbet mid dinner to clean the palatte.

Very youthful in appearance, gentle mousse. Losing just a bit of gas to age. So graceful and subtle in a dignified way. Nothing shouts here, surprisingly refined for such a famous Grand Marquee. Very citrus driven, more limes than lemons, with plenty of toastiness. Acidity is nice and high without being shrill. Lovely balanced dosage. Medium to long on the finish and leaves the impression of toast. Even better day 2.

4.5 years since my last bottle. A wine that has come a long way and is certainly in its prime and should be consumed within 5-7 years. Nice balance and complexity with a lasting finish. Overall- a solid, enjoyable wine that paired well with sushi. Revisit 2026.

Very citric - lemon and grapefruit even. Quite dry. Not very giving. Hard to like as aperitif and better with food. This is not knocking my socks off and this particular bottle (although sound) is not showing well today.

Lovely pale straw color but unfortunately very little bubbles. Lemon juice, orchard fruit, nutty, brioche and a bit yeasty.
Razersharp acidity which was not expected from an '04! Could definitely age more to get even more depth and complexity but I'd be worried about the bubbles disappearing completely.

Pale yellow color. Remarkably young and backward. Yeasty white fruit aroma. Good crisp style. This really needs an additional 5 years of age to reach its full potential. Excellent. This is Clicquot’s “ Prestige Cuvée”

A terrific showing for this wine. Red berries and orchard fruit, almond croissant and subtle balsamic. Early maturity but still fresh. I drifted away from VC a decade ago, but need to increase my purchases again. This was a fine bottle.
Simply smashing follow up to the pet nat. The Grande Dame seems to be in a good place, with wonderful tiny bubbles, intense, shockingly ripe tree fruit notes, a round, rich palate, and an exquisite finish. Got better with each sip, I savored the last few drops as best I could. The last sip was the best. A strong contender for WOTN.

Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 2004. Småpen ungdommelig nese. Livlig på smak med høy konsentrasjon og friskhet. Brer seg flott ut i munn. Skikkelig spenst, som jeg har savnet tidligere. Liten utvikling. Presis lang finish med super mineralitet. Gir snusleppe. Beste GD smakt. 92-93p

Light yellow towards white; nice and gentle, some acidity, a bit austere; nice bready aftertaste; not the best Grande Dame tasted, but fine; seems like 2004 in Champagne is a year to drink up

Really nice and ready to go IMO. Complexity and depth are definitely present, combined with a good amount of gentle acidity. Apple, pear, bread. Terrific length. Made me smile for sure.

(Blind tasting) Quite shy on the nose at first. Ripe apple and citrus. But then spice and perfume. Malo notes of youghurt and cream. But very pure and fresh. More develped on palate. Medium-fullish, roasted palate. Malo-fatness. Almost reminds of oak. Ripe yellow and red apple/pear. Very good grip. Very high acidity. Austere and long. Very long finish. Most elegant of the three champagnes tasted at the same occasion. Much better than when we tasted this in 2014. Too youthful then, now it is à pointe.

Fantastic Vintage Champagne! Aromas of yellow apple, brioche and fresh firewood. Flavors of roasted pears, bread and Parmesan cheese rinds. Perfect column of tiny bubbles in the center of the glass. Outstanding!

Dinner at JB Ah Meng (JB Ah Meng, Geylang, Singapore): A very winous Champagne - this smelt almost like a rich white wine, with butter, cream and chalk, with toasted bread and rich apple fruit below. The palate was quite a bit more developed than the last bottle, but still very youthful, with bright lemony acidity and a firm mousse holding up rich, powerful, very Grand Dame flavours of red apples, bread and yeast, even a touch of white meat on it. Still a touch on the simple side, but there was a lot of power and authority to this, with a lovely push of length at the finish. A solid Champagne, if rather blocky and broad-shoulders. Starting to show well now, but this really needs a decade or more to really show its chops.

Delightful but frightfully young ...... Lovely, delicate notes of pear, peach. I think this is a wine with a lot of time ahead of it. I’m increasingly coming around to the 2004s as superior (or at least more enjoyable) than the 2002s.

Veuve Clicquot La Grand Dame 2004. Ung, ikke heeelt ren nese - ikke så veldig spennende nå. Ganske bra konsentrasjon, men lever heller ikke opp til prestige nivået på smak heller. Noe ufokusert. God lengde med pen mineralitet. Usikker på hvor denne går hen. 89-90p

Tasty. Fresh with hints of pear and faint peach. Bright. Very fine bubbles. Gained weight and nuance with air. Looks to have very good potential, but still young. Delicious nonetheless! 91++

Extremely fresh and refined, but all together muted and demure. I think a tete de cuvée should have something to say, some sort of perspective on the house and this just left me confused about what Veuve is trying to do with this wine. Sure, it tasted fine, but what was the point?

Jordan's 1989 Bordeaux Dinner (Feast & Imbibe - Evanston IL): Mostly apple character with some berry notes. Good weight, less complexity than I would expect prefer. A faint bitter note on finish that I expect will soften with a few more years in the cellar.

Not as excited as first time, almost muted at first on the nose, gained a little with air and by warming a bit, classic fresh bread, orange and lemon zest on the nose, great attack with fine bubbles, high acid, lacks a lot on the mid palate, feel a bit disjojnted, but at least sails on great lenght. Overall very good but missing harmony and complexity.

Superbe bouteille!

Still young, this shows a big, robust nose full of lemon, pineapple, custard, and brioche. Very rich but balanced by terrific acid. You'd do well to keep these stashed away for a few years; with this structure and balance it's got plenty of life ahead and should be ravishing when the tertiary notes emerge. 93+

Absolutely bone dry vintage champagne. Slight oxidation. Tastes of bread and toast, with lots of citrus notes, mostly lemon and grapefruit. A few buttery notes round out the taste. It might be heresy to state that I enjoy Clicquot yellow label even more this austere and considerably more pricey version, but c'est la vie.

I love underrated Champagne vintages. Everybody was looking towards bad, unexciting fruit, but overlooking what kind of wines this fruit gave. Golden yellow in the glass, the color of kings. So expressive on the nose with perfect integration of freshly cut green fruit (apple, pear), citruses, brioche and crushed stone. I tasted the '89 before this. When comparing the two, I'd say this is leaner, softer and brighter. It doesn't have the exact richness of the former, but still shines with character and long finish.

Very delicate with aromas of apple tart, pastry, peach and other garden fruits. Refreshing and mineral.
La Grande Dame is a Prestige Cuvée of Veuve Clicquot house. Its style is delicate and elegant expression of Pinot Noir.
2004 vintage is the blend of 8 Grand Crus: Aÿ, Bouzy, Ambonnay, Verzy, Verzenay for Pinot Noir (61%) and Avize, Oger, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger for Chardonnay (39%).

Served by friends by the Noosa River after the Peters BdB. The colour was just a little deeper than the BdB with a very fine and persistent bead. The nose took some time to fully reveal itself but when it did showed plenty of redcurrant, wild strawberry, lemon and limes with nougat and brioche. The palate was delicious but just lacked the drive to match the nose and lift it to the level of a true prestige Champagne. Perhaps time will sharpen this up but I suspect there will be better vintages ahead !

After the mixed reviews, I was pleased to find these bottles beginning to unfold with some of the toasty complexity that this level of champagne demands. A tiny bit sweet at first, the delivery is rich, perhaps lacking a tad of defining acidic backbone, but overall very nicely packaged as a whole. I like Grande Dame with a lot of age, so these deserve a few more years before a verdict is delivered.

On the nose: Tutti frutti, fudge, mint, salt licorice, very much parfume and flowers. On the palate: Honey, salt licorice and more flowers Long finish
This was not what I expected at all. I had this blind and had my doubts that it was a Champagne. Very interesting since you found many layers of different notes.

Wine Flock Intro Retro - Cabs (Jordan's): Served blind. Again, didn't love the first pour here. The aromas were pretty nondescript and the palate a bit shrill. Second pour after ~20 minutes had picked up some richness, density and sweetness of fruit though there was still pretty intense acid and bead to balance things out. I suspect this is young and needs another few years of bottle age.

Chicago Wine Flock..."Bordeaux and Cali Cab from Jordan" (Chez Whitehead - Northbrook IL): Tasted double blind, other than knowing it is Champagne. Apple and berry notes with a bright richness. Lots more weight and power, also showing both Chardonnay and Pinot fruit. Seemed on the young side. Very good length. I liked this more now vs when last tasted three years ago.

Wasn't digging this, probably because it a) followed the Krug NV just prior to tasting this, and b) it shows too sweet for my liking. Reminds me of 7-Up, for those in the US who remember it growing up, that lemon-lime quality of 7-Up. It also lacks the acidity in the core of the wine that I look for. Lots of sweeter-edged fruit here and not my thing.

Paul and Ashley's Champagne Party (Paul and Ashely's House): I was very curious about this one, how would it show? The nose is classic old school champagne, really attractive. Fairly light yellow in color. Strong acid presence with fine aggressive bubbles dancing on the tongue. Good citrus and lemon flavors. Excellent mineral component which was dominated by a clean chalk note. Finish was light, clean and driven by lemon and orange peel.

The wine’s pretty well balanced, but nothing really stands out. Maybe the wine was in a “dumb” phase? Perhaps a touch less sweet and fruity than normal yellow label NV. But rather unremarkable, it tasted like $40 Champagne. Not worth the $100 price tag.

Opening wine among a dozen total. Incredible dry and toasty quality. Dried apricot's and lemon peel with a waft of melon. Restrained at best and it made me wonder where the flavors were hiding. I appreciate the style but perhaps a Krug is a better choice.

Boxing Day dinner at Chandra's. Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon colour. Legs. Fine bubbles. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of rich almond nuts, kumquat, sweet citrus lemon. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (12.5%), medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of rich almond nuts, kumquat, sweet/honeyed citrus lemon curd. Hint of tight minerals but I had only 1.5 pours so difficult to fully assess. Long finish. Very good quality. What stands out is already the rich nuttiness and sweet citrus fruit. Still some good stuff within, holding good promise for the future.

My last bottle. This hasn't budged much. It's clean, very youthful, with a bead that doesn't quit. The floral bouquet is a touch candied, showing loquat, quince, and apple aromas. Hints of bottle age and toasty vanilla. Lovely depth, balance, and structure. Lively, brisk, and flowing, very flavorful. A wisp of minerality and a streak of citrus run across the palate before closing with a lick of salt on the long finish. Sumptuous, elegant, and complex. Long live the Widow.

1. Flight: Veuve Cliquot Grande Dame 2004 vs Veuve Cliquot Brut 1989: - 2004 deutlich heller, fast weiss.

Tasted at a restaurant dinner, al fresco on a chilly autumn evening. Served a bit on the cold side also, so I would not overstate my impression of this wine. With all this caveat, I found great balance tough obviously not as expressive as it would be under better conditions. Lemony, orange peel, ginger and yeast. More elegant and brighter than what I believe I have found with other bottles from same producer. Clearly a lot to go on here, and I would not mind having a few of these in my cellar. 92 - 95p?

A higher percentage of Pinot Noir (61% if I'm correct), brings back the style I appreciate, similar to Krug and Bollinger. Bright acidity and complexity makes it a delicious Champagne that can be drank on its own or during a meal. Cheers!

En point. I acquired these in 2012 and kept cool and dry in my cellar. I pulled these out for my birthday celebration at FRANK and it was paired with their lucious 63.5 egg from local birds stuffed with a steak tartare. The mousse is more fine and the structure more vinous. I feel these are closer to the end of their peak than beginning. Drink UP
Too young, but clear quality. Very fine bead, with a wonderful mousse. Brioche, macadamia, asian pear and apples fill the palate. Tight and zingy, with really nice mineral/ saltiness. This will be great in 5 years.

Up with the youngsters at the start of CT Texas offline, this was the only Tete de cuvee, other than Drappier Grande Senderre, yet the 2 were very opposite in styles. This was warm inviting and young, but toasted biscuits and subtle yellow apple and tropical fruit, show that this has a lot of maturing to do, but so enjoyable now. The acid and structure are there along with tight minerals and mousse. I love LGD, just prefer lots of time to see its full potential. a great champagne, but will be much better down the road.

What a great suprise. I'm not a big fan of 2004 vintage for the lack of body of the cuvees that I tasted yet. This has creamy texture with candied orange, white Valrhona and brioche. Just enough acid to balance it. Bubbles are tiny. Long life ahead but will probably not improved that much.

Spring Champagne Tasting (Binny's Highland Park, highland park IL): Nose: The nose is very perfumed and feminine with white and red florals, peaches, red berries, apples, warm dough, with a fantastic mineral base. The nose is very fresh and youthful, but ever so balanced with depth to spare too.
Taste: Medium bodied with pronounced medium/high acidity. The acidity is extremely tart and showing off the youth of the wine. While the structure doesn't overpower, it most certainly is there with white florals, peaches, red berries, apples, and mineral tones underneath.
Overall: This is a gorgeous and classy La Grande Dame. It will definitely need some time to fully come together as it feels like the wine isn't giving us close to everything just yet.

Light to medium straw appearance, fine bead, and elegant mousse. Discreetly complex, refined aromas of youthful stonefruit, quince, citrus, toast, biscuits, and seashell. Displays energy and freshness on the lime and green apple infused palate, where vivid, dancing bubbles burst like Pop Rocks, and a backnote of limestone minerality picks up lemon pith/peel on the finish. This is crisp and lively, juicy and tensile, and flaunts length, depth, and serious backbone. I can see this getting better with age. 93+

Lovely and rich nose of white grapefruit, brioche, yeast, spring flowers, and light citrus, more of the same on the palate, improved over last year's tasting but ageing gracefully, tasty, complex impression on the palate, subtle but successful, medium/big body, and medium/long finish.

Klar, strågul. SItrus, rødt eple og mild autolyse på nese. Stram og fast frukt med frisk, spiss. syre. Mild fruktsødme. Spenstige, finmasked mousse. Mineralsk og stram finish med svak bitterhet. Flott lengde. Ung, men drikker flott.

Tasted at the winery. The blend is 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Chardonnay all coming from Grand Cru vineyards in 8 different villages. This wine is aged for 6-10 years before release. A very young wine which probably needs another 5-8 years to peak. Very fresh with notes of grapefruit and bitter apple. Long creamy finish. 92-93 points.

Very crisp, with lots of elegant minerals and nice bubbles, but only with a slight touch of toast and a touch of fruit. Displays young richness, but it does not show much at this stage.

Delicious tiny bubbles, it is a bit wheaty, bready, and toasty. Very dry and elegant and refined. Used it to celebrate our engagement with some friends and was the perfect starter to a wonderful meal. Tastes a bit like what you would assume drinking cashmere would be like (if cashmere were delicious).
Enjoyed at the SF Opera performance of Mefistofele. Light golden color with miniscule mousse. Lemon scents with orange zest flavors and a finished that lasted for minutes. Will likely improve over the next few years. Superb!

Light in colour, lots of citrus but still very young and was tight - took a little time to open up. Palate refreshing and had some good depth of flavour and started to gain more complexity towards the end of the bottle - would have liked to reserved some to try after it had a bit more time to open.

Hart Davis Hart Summer Champagne Tasting (City Winery - Chicago IL): Tasting, brief note. Bready and nutty start with plenty of ripe orchard fruit aromas. Large scaled on power with good textures, this is very well done in this style, which is one I less prefer. 89 points for me.
Got this as a gift and boy this went down well. Two great things are likely to happen.. 1. My wife is already drunk enough that I am going to tell he it's my birthday. 2. We're heading armed with more to our neighbors so likely a gr8 night will ensue. Blame it on this quality champagne, fantastic, highly recommended for amplifying a special occasion !

Tight focused pillar of monolithic Citrix lemon fruits. Sharp and quite difficult to taste at the moment. Style is the fresh zippy terse and grippy type. Would take a decade to soften.

Grabbed a bottle at Changi Airport duty free and we popped this at the Siam Kempinski after dinner. It was super tight. The nose was really unyielding at first, showing little pincpricks of yeast, white fruit and some citrus notes, only very slowly opening out over the night and into the next morning with, first, toasty, bready notes and then into richer, creamier shades and eventually a bit of white meat. The palate too was really tightly wound. It had very fine mousse, obviously good depth and great balance, with typical Grand Dame breadth and power from the large dose of Pinot in the cepage. However, flavour-wise, there were just citrus notes riding on a river well-cut acidity into a rather stern, mineral-lined finish - impressive, but this was still far, far too young to fully enjoy. It was only after an hour or so that it started opening up ever so slightly, shedding some of the monolithic nature, with the finish in particular flushing up nicely with a mouthfilling spiciness. This has promise, but needs years and years yet. Try again in 2020.
2012 K&L Annual Champagne Event (K&L San Francisco Store): K and L Champagne Event. Nose of rich brioche, orange zest, citrus, and smoked almonds with a touch of grapefruit, more of the same on the palate, with lovely richness and subtle complexity, long finish.
A private dinner (Restaurant Bolenius, Amsterdam): The 2004 is a blend of 69% Pinot Noir and 31% Chardonnay from eight grands crus: Aÿ, Bouzy, Ambonnay, Verzy, Verzenay, Avize, Oger and Le Mesnil sur Oger. Elegant, stylish, lovely and rich Pinot depth, combined with the typical freshness I associate with 2004 and floral Chardonnay tones; excellent balance, medium weight; to my mind a very good but not great Grande Dame.

Medium to long on the finish and leaves the impression of toast. Even better day 2.

More develped on palate. Medium-fullish, roasted palate. Malo-fatness. Almost reminds of oak. Ripe yellow and red apple/pear. Very good grip. Very high acidity. Austere and long. Very long finish. Most elegant of the three champagnes tasted at the same occasion.

A tiny bit sweet at first, the delivery is rich, perhaps lacking a tad of defining acidic backbone, but overall very nicely packaged as a whole. I like Grande Dame with a lot of age, so these deserve a few more years before a verdict is delivered.

Opening wine among a dozen total. Incredible dry and toasty quality. Dried apricot's and lemon peel with a waft of melon. Restrained at best and it made me wonder where the flavors were hiding. I appreciate the style but perhaps a Krug is a better choice.

Good (and a great start to the evening), but not nearly as interesting as last time. Maybe a more recent disgorgement. Lightly oxidized - I found this on a supermarket sale which might explain why.

Brut style but loads of fruit and nuts
Almond strikes me first (especially on the nose) with tangerine, cantaloupe, finish with a sharp pear
Nice after flavors with a even flow of tartness that is pleasant
Bubbles are tiny and carry flavors to the nose

My last bottle. This hasn't budged much. It's clean, very youthful, with a bead that doesn't quit. The floral bouquet is a touch candied, showing loquat, quince, and apple aromas. Hints of bottle age and toasty vanilla. Lovely depth, balance, and structure. Lively, brisk, and flowing, very flavorful. A wisp of minerality and a streak of citrus run across the palate before closing with a lick of salt on the long finish. Sumptuous, elegant, and complex. Long live the Widow.

1. Flight: Veuve Cliquot Grande Dame 2004 vs Veuve Cliquot Brut 1989:
- 2004 deutlich heller, fast weiss.

Drink UP

I love LGD, just prefer lots of time to see its full potential. a great champagne, but will be much better down the road.

beautiful yellow colour and tiny bubbles. the nose was rich with brioche, green apple, stone fruits. still very energetic in the palate with a pleasant acidity and minerality as the notes of peach, pastry, apple, unfurl. as it warms some deeper richer layers hint at their presence and linger thru a satisfyingly long finish.

VC Dinner
Full lemon curd. Some smoke and vanilla. Intense citrus and acid. Some bitterness still. Anise on the aftertaste. Needs more time to integrate and settle but great intensity.

Levels with 2cm ullage. Dominated by a Cidre note with a bitter aftertaste.

Very subtle and not overpowering flavor at all. A much smoother champagne than the rest of House Clicquot.
Subtle, bright, flowery.

Full bodied, brioche, creamy, yeast. Excellent apricot, apple flavor. Good steely minerality and acidty. For me it is better than the 96.

Nose - toasted almonds; no fruits - all nuts and spices. Bewitching.
Palate - chocolate hazelnuts and red apples. Good all-round flavour but less exciting than the nose. A little watery? 91- pts.
