Pure hedonistic pleasure. This is singing right now. Intense nose of apricots, ripe nectarines, honeycomb. Lush and dense palate with dried apricots and honey, good acidity but intense sweet flavors. Long ending that lingers for quite a while. 2001 definitely a stunner - and this bottle showed better than my previous one a couple of years ago as it was more integrated and better composed. A long life ahead for this one. A crowd pleaser for sure.

Glad I waited for my last bottle. The tertiaries are more prominent, honycomb, apricot, marmalade... the mouthfeel is oily and more viscous than previous years. There is even some tannin perceived on mid-palate. This was a lovely bottle.

Caramel, a bit of baked apple. Sweet. Still on the young side, could use more age. I'd say this is a teenager of a wine. Powerful with great potential.

Friday Group Brown Bag Tasting (EBCC): Half bottle. Light golden color. Notes of pineapple and apricot, with botrytis spice and mango as well. Full-bodied with a rich texture and flavors of apricot, marmalade, fresh pineapple and pear nectar with bright underlying acidity. Long finish. Excellent.

Very classy wine from a terrific vintage. Nose has barley sugar, lime juice steeped pineapple, some rhubarb and some subtle spearmint. Palate so unctuous and charming; beautiful balancing acidity and freshness. With air the nose reveals more layers; some macadamia, some grated fudge and hints of overripe mango. Love it.

Deep amber in color. Dried honey, lemon peel, mango, and a touch of almond. Medium body, syrupy sweet, and only medium acidity which is not nearly enough for the RS. This results in a mild cloying effect. Still enjoyable but one of my least favorite Sauternes.

From 375 mL. One of the most stunning bottles of Sauternes I have ever had the pleasure of drinking. Tremendous aromatic intensity - oolong tea, orange peel, saffron, exactly the right level of liveliness from VA. On the palate the sweetness-acidity balance is pretty much perfect. Lots of both. This wine has plenty of stuffing but has a weightlessness and clarity to its edges that gives it an effortless grace despite its intensity of flavor. Wonderful now but should go on for decades. And yet more proof that Sauternes is the greatest deal on Earth. This was $30 for a half bottle.

Drank out of 375. Brassy or almost copper color. Nose wasn’t initially auspicious. From a distance, nose is honey, cigar box, and tropical fruit or citrus. Up close, airplane glue notes come on prominently. Then I took a sip. Great balance of acid and sugar. Pineapple and concentrated earthy-honey with a finish that lasts forever. As it breathes, it evolves into soft dried apricots and a touch of cedar. My initial thought on pairing was crème brûlée but I think blue cheese would be better given the richness and concentration. Perfectly mature and I see little point with aging further. Half an hour after the glass was empty, I sniffed it again and only soft dried apricots remained, which I took as a sign a very nice Sauternes
Coravin used: Day 1: Beautiful sauterne in every way: color, bouquet, and palate. Lovely apricot flavors. Blue cheese pairing is perfect. Day 2: tasting similar to day 1, but with a little more tartness. Day 3: Similar to day 2. Can't detect a difference.

This was a pop and pour scenario. I agree with the other tasting notes. this was a delicious mature Sauternes. I was in a s75 bottle so it may have aged a bit faster that a 750. Its at a good place for drinking.

This bottle was singing. It delivered a lovely, life affirming boost of apricot marmalade, almonds, a hint of cinnamon, nougat, and toffee. Gorgeous mouthfeel, and a silky finish.
Certainly not a great Sauternes, but a very good one. This bottle likely has years to go. Likely will not improve, but will certainly hold it's own.

Deep amber color. Pronounced developed aromas of dried mango, black tea, lemon peel, raisin, apricot, honey, a bit of almond. Luscious, full body, high acidity, med alcohol, super long finish. Well balanced and tasty with balanced sweetness and acidity and super long finish. It might still lack a bit of acidity compared to the finest Sauternes but this is really a good stuff. A lot more youthful than expected tbh. Still have more years to keep or even to develop. Drank out of a half bottle.

Vinetasters: Old Cabernet (Park Ridge, IL): Served double blind. From half-bottle. Clearly Sauternes, with an intense note of bitter orange marmalade on the nose and palate. Very fresh and youthful, and 2001 was a reasonably straight-forward guess.

From a half bottle. 5th time drinking this wine and it has been consistently fine. From the great 2001 Sauternes vintage. Medium gold color. Solid cork. Paired with a homemade skillet brownie with pecans. Just a beautiful dessert wine filled with apricot notes and pineapple. Sharp acidity to hold all of the fruit and sweetness together. Drinking fine. No rush to drink. 94 points.

Nose: Apple, cooked pear, orange blossoms. A touch of glue.
Palate: Cinnamon raisin bagel. Toasted marshmallows and graham cracker (Like a s’more sans chocolate). Orange blossoms. Welch’s white grape juice. Little touch of nuts. Apricot liqueur. There is a gentle acidic backbone the keeps the wine very lively despite its age and sugar content.
Finish: Long. Baking spice, gentle blend of sweet and tart. Poached pears and apricots.
Overall: tremendously enjoyable.
NB: Drank from a half bottle.

1998 Bordeaux Horizontal - London (Sun Street Hotel, Liverpool Street, London): Wow. What an outstanding Sauternes - from two halves. No difference noted. This has such a rich, concentrated nose. There is an apricot jam and Madeleine character with oodles of botrytis and some passion fruit. Palate lasts for 20 seconds and has perfect poise and balance. Worked well with the Stilton.

Sunday lunch (Porcine, Oxford Street): From half bottle. Caramel, slight toffee apple notes join apricot and orange marmalade as well as a touch of wood glue. The palate reflects this as well and the sugar is a little too high for the acidity here and, with time, that wood glue note grows over time. Hmm, drinkable but suggest this is tending to flaw...

PnP. On the nose intense botrytis notes, dried apricot and a suggestion of orange peel, the palate just continues what the nose already indicated and shows good freshness, is very rich, sweet and creamy, the finish is long and delicious, in a great spot now, Sauternes as it should.

Pomerol, part 1 (67 Pall Mall): A lovely bright orange/peach colour - so inviting. Orange and peach in flavour terms, too: burnt orange on the nose, and a nice combination of char and soft peachy fruit on the palate. Just enough acidity to provide a pleasant feeling of lift. I've had this wine a few times recently, and this example had a bright, light-hearted energy that the others had lacked.

Still holding on. In late secondary phase. Mild core of acid is holding it together. Not as unctuous but much more sophisticated then the last tastes 3 and 9 years ago. Nice orange marmalade.

2010 Fevre and Dauvissat Grand Cru Chablis (Oceanaire, Mpls, MN): Very dark gold color. Drank a small glass from 375ml. Sweet and caramelized, unctuous, honeyed, dense, apricot and orange syrup, apple peel, lychee, medium finish, maybe a touch sweeter than ideal. This bottle was more advanced.

Out of 375. This showed a deep nose of marmalade with Grand Marnier and Christmas cake spices. The palate didn't quite live up to the promise of the nose. It was good, but perhaps slightly flabby, with not quite enough acid to balance the sweetness. Still, I love Sauternes and this was enjoyable with a selection of desserts.

This bottle had plenty of classic Sauternes apricot, orange marmalade, honey and buttered toast at 21 years of age yet didn't really fulfil the promise of the year with some amelioration of the intensity on the finish. Perhaps this is bottle variation but their is still plenty of enjoyment to be had here.

{Bought on release, halves and fulls, still working on my 2 cases of halves ... perfect fill, opened with 2001 Coutet} Lovely nose, apricots and marmalade, some marzipan notes, orange and citrus elements. Perfect fruit and sugar balance. Has been drinking well at this level for a long time, and many more years to go!

Prior bottle was one year ago and this wine continues to show quite well. Nose remains very aromatic with lots of orange and pineapple along with mango and apricot notes. Between medium and full bodied with the same mix of orange and pineapple upfront, moving to deeper, richer mango and pineapple through the middle. These distinctive, main notes were accompanied by honey and other, mixed tropical fruits. Depth through the middle remains a strength as does the overall clarity of the fruit notes. This clarity is helped by the tart tropical notes as well as the solid acidity. These contrasting elements allow the fruit to be more expressive and show nuances. Overall, this wine is drinking quite well and in a fashion it should be able to maintain for several more years.

A beautiful bottle of this wine that opened with a mid gold colour and a nose of pineapple, apricot, lemon and honey. The palate has intense tropical fruits initially then apricot and marmalade leading through lemon and grapefruit to a honeyed finish. There is a nice briskness to the mineral and acid touches at the end. This is very good although in 375ml bottles there is clearly some variation.

Deep gold in the glass. Apricot, honey, and a touch of soapiness on the nose. Good balance of sweet and acidity and spice in the mouth, but the finish is a bit clipped and then a mineral, almost metallic note comes out on the finish. Left me wanting more from it.

From a half bottle, and a bit of a disappointment tonight. Light golden color. Apricot and tropical fruit- pineapple- with a subtle botrytis spice mixed in as well. Rich, with honeyed tropical fruit on the palate. Good, but just felt a little flat tonight. Paired well with the citrus & pistachio panna cotta at Osteria Langhe.

From 375mL. Light golden, excellent color for 20 year old sauternes; aromatic, burnt caramel, citrus peel, baking spice; palate is medium bodied, balanced medium sweetness, medium-plus acidity that adds a good amount of verve and freshness, citrus pith, some minerality; finish is medium length and wish it was just a bit longer. A very well balanced sauternes showing signs of maturity (stage 3) with caramel, plenty of sweet/bitter combo seen in excellent sauternes, fresh acidity, and decent length. A solid 2001 ready to open now but will easily go another decade from this format. 92

Just a beautiful wine at 20 years. Paired with a variety of cheese cake Petit four’s. Deep gold color, full bodied, sweet. Very intense aromas and flavors of orange marmalade, sweet honey, ripe apricot, juicy peach, candied pear, lemon cream, and creamy butterscotch underscored with fresh acidity and chalky minerals. Medium plus acidity offsets the sweet, ripe, juicy fruits and provides outstanding balance. Extremely complex and satisfying. Finishes very long. Quite impressive and a “wow” wine for me. Outstanding.

Christmas Day Supper @ PILs. Delicious. Full, sweet and still very youthful. With that trade mark lick of marmalade. No hurry. Tried alongside a Rieussac 01 - preferred the L-P by half a canvas (the marmalade!)
Pretty, lean, clean sauternes. From an obviously great vintage that shows. Beautiful color. Out of 750, I would give this another 5-10 years. Maybe some 375's are ready to go. Decent pairing with blue and honeycomb, although could be a bit richer. Held up well over 3-4 days.

Prior bottle was exactly a year ago and this bottle was a slight step up (positive bottle variation I think). Impressive nose, with huge amounts of pineapple and a mix of tart orange and richer orange. Between medium and full bodied with orange and pineapple upfront, moving to mango and pineapple through the middle. There's a variety of mixed tropical qualities behind these primary notes along with overall outstanding density. Backside showed tart tropical notes along with very good acidity (better than my prior bottle showed) and this was what made the wine. That extra edge of acidity and tartness worked really well with the fruit depth and overall density and sweetness level. I'll plan to open my next bottle in June/July 2022.

Eric supplied for our first in-person, post-Covid Xtremo wine dinner last nite. Drank blind with a '94 Yquem. This wine is big, bold and intense. Also, darker and substantially sweeter than the '94. There's a lot of tropical fruit both on the nose and palate. There's pineapple, orange peel, apricots and lots of honey. I also picked up some nutty flavors twd the back end of the wine. Solid acidity and structure, but exceedingly sweet--perhaps bc the Yquem was almost Demi-sec, which was very unexpected. Enjoyed the wine but not my fave 01, and the Yquem was a more interesting wine. Also, like all the 01s, needs more bottle age.

Super-intense and rich (barley sugarrs! with balanced acidity. Long and complex. Quite astonishingly good. I'm sure this will last forever but it's simply wonderful to enjoy now.
A rich and heady nose of honey, marmalade, blossom and lanolin. It is full, gently exotic and layered. There's a creamy feel against the gums and the perfect amount of sweetness. It finishes fresh with a touch of citrus rind and is long.

Interesting wine. There are apricots here but they have been grilled...never experienced that before. Perhaps it is just this bottle, but the fruits have taken a back seat to tertiary flavors. On the palate this is thick and unctuous almost like a syrup.

From half bottle. Very dark orange, but still perfectly fresh. There's plenty going on in this wine - marmalade, saffron, vanilla, burnt caramel, ginger. It's moreish and not too sweet, but maybe feels slightly too dark in its flavour profile, with the caramel and marmalade feeling quite weighty on the palate. It's long, but not quite lovely.

Nose of brewed tea, honey, and clove. Syrupy in the mouth with marmalade, dark honey, and a slight hint of sea urchin roe. More flabby than expected, however. Considerable baby fat was hiding the acidity and the wine was a bit clingy on the palate. Lacked linearity. Dense but not clean. Will wait longer to try another bottle hoping it sheds the fat.

Just amazing. Orange marmalade and buckwheat honey with great length and persistence. The sugar is getting eaten with time, showing the complexity a truly great vintage like 2001 can give. I love where this is now from 375.
Orange, pineapple and a nutty quality on the nose. Between medium and full bodied (13.5% ABV) with lots of tropical fruits both upfront and through the middle including mango and pineapple. Mid-body shows good density along with honey and the same nutty quality I picked up on the nose. Backside does show fewer tart notes that I would've preferred, especially given the richness of the fruit/honey. There's still solid acidity and the wine does show good balance, but its several significant steps below the utterly sublime 2001 Suduiraut we had earlier in the week. Tasted without that comparison, I think this wine shows quite well with good complexity, very good depth and enough structure to allow it to be rewarding for several more years. I might open my next bottle as soon as November 2020.

A lovely nose - fresh clementine, rough cut marmalade, Meyer lemon, crème pâtissière and just a touch of white flower. The palate is much deeper with a smoky lanolin quality. Regardless of whether this goes the elegant route suggested by the nose, the powerful route suggested by then palate, or a middle road, this should age very well indeed. Notably, this was very tight and showed far better a day later. 93-94+

75cl drunk over two successive Sunday dinners assisted my Coravin and its aerator in the first instance. Absolute consistency. As per earlier '17 note: dark orange marmalade, dried exotic fruits and plenty of botrytis with a core balancing acidity. A fine luscious Sauternes indeed! No obvious sign of budging from this sweet spot. Now and up to 30 years from vintage.

Color is medium gold with just a hint of browning. Apricot and mushroom on the nose, along with fruit blossom floral scents. I was surprised by the mushroom. We had a ver mushroom-y cheese selected to go with this, so perhaps my nose was influenced. Medium weighted for a Sauternes. Not too sweet but sweet enough. Very long finish. Quite nice. Slightly fat in the mid palate, the only thing holding it back from a higher score.

A peek into some 2000 Bordeaux (Margeaux Brasserie, Chicago IL): Nose: The nose is pungent and balanced with nectarines, apricots, vanilla, nougat, custard, honey, crème brulee, and yellow flowers. This is wide open and showing some more maturing aspects as well as good depth.
Taste: The feel is full bodied with crisp, high acidity. The feel shows off a richer and textured side with nectarines, apricots, vanilla, nougat, honey, creme brulee, and some custard.
Overall: This is lovely and drinking great right now. This shows off a more mature side but there is still some freshness to the tones.

From 375. Copper-gold; aromatic, orange marmalade, botrytis baking spice; palate is full bodied, richly textured orange marmalade, citrus pith bitterness, medium acidity, some minerality through the midpalate which starts to balance the richness and fruit; finish is medium-plus length in the richer style. My last half was 6 years ago, and I thought the nose was floral and the palate was just a touch sweet on balance. I think this has made strides towards maturity, enjoyable now but still has a bit more weight and sweetness on the palate than ideal. It has interest and character, and a bit of bitter citrus pith, and may still improve for a decade, though I don't think it will reach the heights of the top sauternes of the vintage. 92 Day 4: Largely the same. Good balance, richer styled, still sweet on the palate. 91-92

Pausing for the Cause 2019 (Chicago, IL): This bottle showed slightly older than I would have expected for a 2001 Sauternes to be. Classic Sauternes flavours, with bitter orange, marmalade, and spice. Very nicely balanced, and good complexity too. This has almost certainly got to be one of the great values of the vintage.

This is the second bottle of this wine that I have tried in two months. My initial score was 92 (but I see that Wine Searcher has racked this vintage up to 94 in the meantime).
Has anything changed in my appreciation? No, not really: beautiful botrytis nose of candied fruit and slightly over-ripe tropical fruit leads to a well-balanced palate, where sweetness is framed against gentle acidity. There is a lovely lightness of touch here but, once again, I feel that something is missing - depth, complexity of texture.
This is a style of Sauternes that will appeal to many; and indeed, such wines lead me to think about whether absolute point systems in general are appropriate, and whether personal preferences for a certain style in a wine may complicate such scoring systems. In other words, where does the objectivity of the latter come from?

Wonderful. Not overly sweet, but lovely complexity. Deep orange colour. nose is full of marmalade, some caramel. Lovely balance in the mouth, sweet but nicely tart on the finish with a rounded caramel and orange peach fruit finish. Sub-optimal cheesecake with berry sauce match but this was delicious. Pretty much at peak - cannot imagine this will get any better and proabably drying out a little since last visit in 2017.

Deep burnished but clear gold colour; lovely integrated nose of cloves, toffee, burnt orange, and with a clean lift; taste = wonderful balance of noble rot and acidity. A very fine wine, although there was something missing for me here, which I find difficult to put my finger on. Perhaps a dying away on the back palate or a little short on mouthfeel? Perhaps it is a matter of vintage.

Another impulse opening - it was that kind of evening. In the glass, clear honey-amber. On the nose, oranges and more funky tropical fruits. On the palate, more oranges, apricots, lychee, and a bit of caramel, paired with a full-bodied, smooth, and relatively long finish. No rush to open this, there are many years ahead, but it's at a nice plateau right now.

4th time I have had this wine. Opened at the Granor Farms dinner with Apple Fritters with ginger and bourbon custard. Great bottle and pairing. Thick and unctuous with solid acidity holding the sweetness in check. Notes of honeysuckle, apricot purée and oranges. 95 points.
The darkest of the three (Suduiraut and Rieussec are the other two). A little nutty flavor profile, a little heavy overall while still having great acidity. Not clumsy on its own but compared to the other 2 it seemed a bit that way. Very enjoyable, very refined, long finish. 93 points.

Previous bottles (in 2006 and 2011) were mediocre…this bottle had started to turn a rich gold in color and was fantastic…peach, marmalade…nice and rich while not too sweet…consumed with lemon squares that pushed it over the top…a great Sauternes experience.

Tasted alongside 2001 de Fargues and 2001 Raymond-Lafon. Came in as a beautiful third in a great set showing that 2001 Sauternes is in a great place right now.

The colour is orange, even bronze. This is fully mature, with rich fruit and a slightly burnt barley sugar flavour. Arguably this is a little past its best, but I still like it a lot.

Deep, old gold, primrose rim; creme brulée, marmalade, a hint of linctus; sweet, neat, notes of caramel, plenty of acidity to provide the necessary cut & drive; powerful finish. I suspect this is yet to peak. Should age 20 more years.

Medium gold color. Aromas of apricots, ripe pears and botrytis. Medium bodied, ripe fruit in the mouth with excellent depth and length and a solid core of acidity. Complex, silky and long on the palate. Thoroughly delicious and firmly in the sweet spot of maturity.

Over four years since I last had this. Holding well, lots of botrytis on the nose and an apricot dominated flavour. Powerful wine losing a little sweetness. Excellent.

Boxing Day dinner with family members. Served with two tarte tatins (fig and pear) that it accompanied perfectly. Colour seems to deepen with each bottle! As per earlier notes packed with marmalade and and dried exotic fruit aromas and flavours. Plenty of botrytis here, and enough core acidity to bring the whole into a luscious balance. Definitely on the up and I suspect will last well longer than my original 2026 estimate. Next bottle 2020 and will recalibrate dates then.

Absolutely delicious. Sweet caramel apple and orange on the nose, but with orange blossom notes. Palate is ripe and unctuous but with nice balancing acidity. Overall impression is of a perfectly balancd and complex sweet wine, mostly orange notes went fantastically with a sticky toffee pudding.

Dinner with Uncle Richard and Aunty Arouny (Glen Avenue): Woot - toffee in glass. hay and tea leaf, marmalade, glazed orange. complex, layered, some age complexity. Perfect acid-sweetness balance. Loooong mineral finish. Exquisite and paired perfect with Aunty Arouny's impeccable creme caramel!

This has emerged from an overly sweet phase and has emerged the other side a complex monster of a wine. Burnt caramel and confit orange aromas lead to a wonderful orange marmalade, apricot, subtle saffron, subtle botrytis ever changing Sauternes. Retains good balancing acidity. Drinking exceptionally well with room to evolve further.

375. med gold. still touch of sulphur in elegant, refined nose of apricot, pineapple, orange-tinged lemon, slightly floral, spicey notes with honey-laced botrytis overlay; becomes richer as warms with air and bitter almond graced orange notes emerge. complex, very lively flavour with rather explosive notes all around tongue and palate. excellent balance of sugar and acid; just right touch of botrytis bitterness at commencement of extremely long, delicate, sprightly fade out. should improve for a few years
In the beginning some burnt and almost rancid aromas, with a powerful attack in the mouth. The off aromas disapeared after a while and more elegant Sauternes aromas with marzipan notes appeared, still intense and powerful on the palate.

{Bought on release, perfect fill; from 375 ml; have had > 12-15 times from purchase of 3 cases; drunk with Mark K, Barb S, Jane L}. Rich yellow color, typical apricot and marzipan of Lafaure-Peyraguey (if tasted blind this would be shouting L-P); rich and unctuous throughout attack, mid palate and long finish; if had to find a nit, it lacks just the touch of extra acidity that would allow the wine to go for decades; delicious and very satisfying wine. For my palate this is probably drinking at its best from 375 format.

from med-dark amber 375,poorly stored. moderately oxidized but still attractive fruit in nose with even a bit of floral lift. tasty madeira-like oxidized taste is a bit harsh but quite pleasant overall: strong orange-apricot flavour qwith a more delicate honey overlay. viscous and full-bodied. very sweet, but just enough acid to balance. lingering echo in finish is quite fine.
Stunning! Full flavored but still delicate - apricot, a bit of honey and a hint of orange. It went extremely well with a french toast with caramel (lightly done) bananas foster and chantilly cream. If there was more, I was still be enjoying both. Sadly it was my last bottle

Epic 2001 Sauternes Horizontal (San Francisco): Tasted single-blind. From a 375. Golden-orange; nose is completely oxidized, sherried; palate is moderate sweetness, medium acidity, nice orange fruit, less oxidized on the palate; medium finish. Flawed. I guessed this was the Clos Haut Peyraguey.

Had the good fortune to taste from a bottle shared by a friend. While I'm not a big fan of these sweet Sauternes generally, this was an interesting experience, particularly given the relative age of this bottle. Effusive tropical fruit and Creme brûlée on the nose. Heavy viscosity and weight coats the tongue with tropical fruit sweetness. Not syrupy. Enjoyed this experience.

Light yellow to yellow color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of lychee, orange foam, almond and quince. Rich flavors of candied orange slices, honey and kumquat. Medium to bold acidity, full bodied. Rich and unctuous on the palate without being cloying. Could be a real stunner some day. Drink or hold but you're definitely in no rush. Should continue to evolve in bottle for another decade if not more.

Weekly tasting group RWP: Really Special Wines (@ DJ): This is truly a great Sauternes with beautiful botrytis, apricots, orange zest etc. The same on the palate with a great concentration. Firm sweetness, but also great acidity. Oppulent, but elegant as well. A great, luxurious and harmonious wine.

Very good but does not feel as bright as last time. Although the '69 Madeira we had before may have had something to do with it, a little more acid would've been welcome. Great bottle of Sauternes nonetheless.

Except a great sweet wine experience rather than one of a rich Sauternes. The wine was still honey in color with a terrific stony nose, and it was clear that it is in its prime drinking time. As sweet and similar in viscosity to honeydew juice, with upfront sweetness, followed by traces of savory herb, hints of bees wax, and then it sails out of the mouth with refreshing acidity. Long and vibrant...DRINK or hold....

Lovely sweet aromas of honeysuckle, lemon oil, and beeswax. Rich, yet not cloying with very good purity of fruit. Apricot, peach, and tropical sweet flavors with a nice freshness to the finish. Not the bracing intensity of '01 Yquem, but quite good and still comes across young and vibrant. Good stuff.

Quite a deep yellow colour. This has notes of honey, lemon and barley sugar, attractive acidity, good concentration and length. Some half bottles tasted recently have seemed to be slightly past their peak, but this, from a standard 750 ml bottle, is not: in fact, it is drinking very well now.

From a previously opened whole bottle brought by Peter, this Sauternes was simply stunning. Gorgeous fragrance of orange peel, peach, vanilla, apricot and a hint of cinnamon. Medium weight yet mouth filling and very persistent. Sweet of course but not at all cloying or tiring. A great vintage for Lafaurie that drinks extremely well now.

Orange color dominated by the bouquet and flavor of botrytis, which could be compared to a combination of apricots and volatile gasoline. The bouquet with this bottle was quite extraordinary and could be smelled more than a foot from the glass. The wine was only moderately sweet and was not unctuous or viscous, features that I have not found in older Sauternes or Barsacs. I have also not found these wines to be particularly complex, although their flavor is certainly persistent. You either rhapsodize over the taste and smell of these wines, or you don't, and I don't.

Enjoyed this at the end of Thanksgiving dinner. It did the trick, appealing to the experienced wine drinkers and novices as well. Fresh and sweet without being cloying. Medium concentration relative to the bigger wines of the vintage but that made it somewhat appealing at the end of a big meal.

Son's birthday dinner with family (one day early!). Opened 60 minutes before drinking. Deep burnished gold. Incredible concentration of apricot, honeysuckle, botrytis and thick cut marmalade aromas and flavours. Detected some heat on the palate but viscosity ensured that the flavours and honeyed sweetness were firmly coated on tongue ensuring a long finish and great (30min+) length. Should be good for another decade of so. Excellent.

A deep golden colour, almost brown; intense, luscious nose; likewise the palate, which is deep and full, with a rich sweetness; the flavours are turning towards burnt sugar and I think this is fully mature. This was from a half bottle, so larger formats may be a little fresher than this.

Bordeaux Confidential USA-wonderful opportunity to taste 3 vintages of Chateau Lafaurie-Peyraguey together, this Chateau is in my top 5 Sauterne houses, nose of pear, honey, and spring flowers, more of the same on the palate, mouth filling and mouth coating, at it's peak, thick like peanut butter and honey on toast, long, long flavorful, finish and sweet lingering aftertaste.

Bordeaux Confidential SF (SF): Moderate plus concentration, bright gold in the glass. Nose: Saffron botrytis, wax, something very much in the petrol-family of aromas. Palate: Tart elevated acidity, with a hint of phenolic bitterness. Apricot character on the palate. It’s really nice! Score: Between 8.5 and 9.

Lioco and Sonoma Coast Tasting (House of Nanda - Chicago IL): Very pleasant, but slightly disappointing given its critics' scores. Good apricot and baked apple aromas and flavors, but modest botrytis character coming through for the quality of the vintage and ever-so-slightly hollow/short. I have a few stashed in the back of the cellar, so will try to retrieve one shortly to see if this bottle was representative.

New Years Eve dinner. PnP'd. Bottle in A1 condition (last had been slightly corked). Deep gold colour, botrytis honeyed aromas. Honeysuckle, ripe apricots, honeyed viscosity with immense weight and sweet concentration. Not the subtlest of Sauternes as it stands - but still well into the excellent class with at least 10 years to develop a broader complexity and perhaps an extra point or two.

Golden. Nose was of sweet pears, vanilla, citrus. Taste was more sweet that perhaps a slight lacking in acidity-which is surprising as 2001s when young tended to be nicely balanced, less so here in this example. Still quite good.

The wine pours a deep golden auburn color with copper notes. Looking like a sherry-cask matured single malt with considerable aging, the wine pours with very thick long legs, no less to the preponderance of high sugar level from this blockbuster vintage. On the nose is a concentrated bouquet of honey, caramel, chrysanthemum, bananas, marzipan and dried fruit cake. On the palate, the wine boasts an unctuous stricture with alcohol first hitting the throat, bringing with it a little heat. It then glides effortlessly down, bringing with it tones of burnt sugar, tropics fruits, vanilla, roasted pineapple and creme brulee. Just a tad of acidity in the end to keep this fresh from being overly cloying. Finish is long and quite memorable, especially smelling at the empty glass for residual scent. Quite a remarkable wine indeed and a long shelf life ahead.

A deep golden yellow colour. This wine has great depth of flavour, coupled with good acidity, resulting in excellent balance. There are flavours of barley sugar, honey and candied peel, and the finish is long. This now seems to be at its absolute peak and should be drunk while it retains its freshness.

93-94 pts
Very rich with great aromatic intensity and good balance from the acidity. There's a burnt note that bothers me a little, like overdone roasted almonds or candied sugar. For a 2001 I wouldn't rate the finish much longer than medium neither, but sure, it's a layered and sumptuous sticky this.

Cantemerle & Lagune Vertical; 6/28/2014-6/30/2014 (Dale's): This didn't get the attention it deserved, but that said, this is another 2001 Sauternes that has turned the corner into full mid-maturity. Lots of oyster shell, honey, and caramel, very nice, but seems a bit plodding right now.

Has developed a nice burnt orange hue, but still quite translucent. Lovely taught honey and spice, with a rich toasted bread and blossom bouquet. Dense, but silky, flows beautifully, coiled with power and has tremendous length. Richly honeyed but not cloying, lovely refreshing acidity. Creamy, peachy, apricot edge, gentle spice, delicious. Has softened a little with age but resonates with lovely flavours. At its peak.

This is still young but so well done. It's got a long life ahead. On the nose there's apricot, orange, honeycomb, noticeable but enjoyable botrytis, and tropical fruits. Good density on the palate. S FL WS Group Summer Offline (Market 17 - Ft. Lauderdale, FL): A nice golden color with mostly honey and some apricot, peach, and almond notes. Viscous, concentrated and sweet, I felt it could use just a bit more acidity to balance all the richness. Didn't get as much complexity and layers as I have from other 01's, but still a really solid sauternes that shows the class and balance of the vintage.

Awe inspiring wine. Lucky to have this again, this time from a pristine btl, opened for ~6 weeks (under cork in fridge). Golden colored. Nose: Slight oxidation towards Tokay incl that acidic twist. Brimming over with Botrytis. Dried apricot. Small smoked fish (yumm!). Could smell this all day :-) Mouth: Like Wine-Strategies' wine: could've used a tad bit more acid. This wine is getting on with its everyday business of maturing. And it is doing so with great confidence. Loooong long finish with the myriad aromas that go with the territory. Botrytis, apricot, saffron, garrigue, thyme, minerality towards iodine, reminiscent of Jägermeister etc. All components are getting in to place. A slight bitter tinge in the end game vouches for this being and becoming a killer wine with fois gras and hairy cheeses. Will evolve and last for very many years. Counting 4742 btls currently in store with CT:ers. Will buy on sight for the long haul.

Completely on point now, which is to say it's so totally delicious. I have one tiny nit - the acids seem a bit low. Could be some bottle variation, or could be a representative bottle, but remember, I said 'tiny' nit, because on the whole, this is just flat out can't-wait-to-refill-my-glass deliciousness. highly recommended, drink thru 2037

Regular dinner group (@ EM): Hmmm… I have second thoughts about this wine, but time will probably be the solution. In both the bouquet as well as the taste glue is dominating. Of course there is plenty of polishing wax, botrytis, orange peel and apricots in this enormously concentrated wine. The sweetness is almost extreme and the acidity probably hidden. I have one bottle left and I will try to wait until 2020 (Or even better; 2025) before opening it. No score for today.

Charity dinner for Macmillan's. This was consumed and many seemed to like it. However to my palate, while showing all the fabulous concentration one would expect from a leading Sauternes in a fine vintage, this bottle had a persistent hint of corked mustiness in the background. While not rendering it by any means undrinkable this took away from what should otherwise have been a vinous treat at the end of highly enjoyable evening. Will report back. Potentially a 93+ wine I suspect.

2001 Sauternes Horizontal (Pasion in San Francisco, CA): From a half. Deep yellow color with just a hint of gold; nice light and fresh floral nose with some citrus, orange blossom; concentrated palate, full bodied, dense tropical fruits, pineapple, slightly too sweet/cane sugar in the midpalate; long finish. This sauternes is very primary, still needs a bit of time to come together a bit more, absorb a bit more sugar, and develop its own personality. Interestingly, the hallmark of Lafaurie (present in this wine) seems to be a lighter styled floral nose but great density on the palate. This needs at least 5-10 more years to age before trying again. 93-94+ Day 2: Maybe a tad more integrated, but hasn't changed much. Still has a slight too much sweetness on the palate. When tasted first, the palate had great complexity and this is obviously a great wine. When tasted after the 2001 Rieussec, it seemed simpler in comparison. This is a great wine in its own right, but the 01 Rieussec is even more stellar today. Day 4: Retained its freshness better than any of the other wines with days of air. The Rieussec was excellent but bigger and integrated. The Lafaurie Peyraguey is still refreshing and floral.

Served slightly chilled. Nicely balanced and still holding quite a bit of sweetness with good acidity to round it out. For me, this is in a good drinking window as I don't like my Sauternes to be too old where the sweetness starts to fade. Excellent dessert wine.

Nose was initially limited to age-associated bottle bouquet, but really opened up after 15 minutes. Not the most captivating nose I've ever seen from a sauternes, but delivered the goods: honey, flowers, bees wax, and quite clean despite the initial age-induced bottle bouquet. The palate is the winner for this one--honeyed and sufficiently caramelized while staying nicely balanced with regards to alcohol and freshness. Definitely kept me coming back for another sip and did not disappoint when paired with blue cheese and fruit. I would slap on the" classic" moniker for this one--not a powerhouse, but delivers exactly what you want. Color is starting to transition from golden to orangey. It's plenty fresh right now, so perhaps drinking window could stretch another 10 years.

Dinner with wine+art (Kiki's Bistro, Chicago): From 375ml. Lighter color than the Guiraud. Notes of lemon, pear, peach and honey; whereas the Guiraud was deep and pwerful, this is bright and racy. Palate follows the bouquet; citrus, honey and tropical fruit flavors. Lovely acidity with a long finish. 94-95 pts.

Lightly corked. A pity, as there was good material beneath the wet cardboard. The wine was even drinkable, but not quite enjoyable as one is left pondering how good it could have been.

Now this is more like it. From a 375, still young and the alcohol sticks out some. But the orange rind, tangerine, vanilla and spice is delicious. To try again in a couple more years.

With layers of sweet, ripe, tropical pineapple, apricots, orange, peach, vanilla and honey, this medium/full bodied sweet, Bordeaux wine offers a juicy mouthful of rich, spicy, honey coated nuts and ripe yellow fruits. This is a Sauternes I enjoy drinking during its first two decades of life. This is probably not a wine to hold for longer periods of time.

1982 Bordeaux dinner at Lavandou also bubblies, whites and stickies: Thick, thick, thick, 10W40. Strong presence of botrytis gives very spicy nose impression, cream caramel, mango, apricot, vanilla and light maple syrup. The palate is unctuous and extremely sweet but the noticeable acidity makes it not too cloying. Still quite fat and borderline cloying. I believe with a few more years of cellaring this will be a bit more precise as it loses the sweetness. Not a bad showing but definitely will improve.

Had from 375ml. Noticed the color is darkening to an amber shade. While still showing predominantly citrus and honey flavors, it is starting to show some ever so slight raisiny notes whhich is concerning. I'm starting to wonder about the long term future of this.

From 375ml. Amber in color. A gigantic nose of apricot, peach pit and hints of petrol. On the palate, unctous but very light on its feet. The acidity is nicely integrated into the delicious apricot fruit.

Tasted non blind at a wine dinner. Opened and served immediately.
Dark yellow color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of windex, lychee, wet stones and a hint of camphor. Flavors of dried pineapple, lychee, honey and minerals. Bright acidity, full bodied. Drink or hold.

13.5% ABV. Medium gold in the glass. Nectar-like nose with a bit of a waxy glue quality upon opening. This diminished with time (tasted over several days). Frankly sweet but with nice, classic Sauterne flavors of stone fruit, ripe fig, and honey. Pretty good. Didn't really decline after two nights in the fridge.

This amber liquid from a great Sauternes vintage gave up scents of honeysuckle, pineapple, oranges, lemons, some peach, oak, cigar box, brown sugar and coconut. This followed through in the palate which had great length but perhaps lacking the elegance of Sauternes like Suduiraut and Yquem. Last bottle tasted less than 2 weeks ago score 94. The last bottle tasted a little different and was less open on the nose.

Bought at auction in Melbourne this dark amber Sauternes gave up (sometimes reluctantly) aromas of dried apricots, mandarins, honey, wood, cinnamon, floral and perfumed notes. The palate was full bodied but lacked elegance. The flavors mirrored the nose and were sometimes vivid. The wine was drunk at around 9 degrees C. It seemed its best after 1/2 hour in the decanter till when finished at 1 1/2 hours.

Sadly, this was much better a few years ago and is now tiring out. The orange color is starting its slide towards amber and there's not any freshness of fruit left. That would be fine if other interesting things were going to come out but in this case it's hard for me to see how that's going to happen before the wine begins its real death spiral. When the 2001 Sauternes first came out, I had reservations that some of them might have been too much of a good thing, and the way this has developed over the last few years seems to validate that concern.

Can't say this is really doing it for me right now. Caramel nose with a pronounced sweet Bonne Maman Apricot Preserves palatte. Tinge of Bonne Maman Orange Marmalade Preserves and acidity or citrus on the after taste. More subtlety and less sweetness would have been nice. Overdone and somewhat disjointed.

Waited three years between bottles and can't say it's much different, other than the color is deepening gold. Honey, botrytis and peaches or apricots on the nose. Apricots, caramel, honey, coconut(?) on the palate. Sweet, sweet with very light acidity. Clean, long finish. Drank before dinner with chunks of bleu cheese and super sharp cheddar; this stuff ran clean over the cheddar, but was lovely with the bleu cheese.

My 4th half of this. Consistently good. marmalade, a touch of honey and moderate botrytis showing. Medium sweet, rich and the flavour has lots of apricots and a bit of botrytis character. Polished wine. Long.

Nice creme brulee and orange marmalade flavors. Very creamy and nice thick mouthfeel. STill too young to pick up secondary flavors. I would give this another 5 years plus. We popped and poured a 375ml.

From a magnum, at Adambottom Farm, Good Friday dinner 2011. All the Maddans save David (in Afghanistan), Caroline & Michael, and the Hall Farm B-As save J & J. Good colour, deepening already, goodish sweetness but nothing subtle; if anything too sweet and simple. Perfectly enjoyable, but primary, one-dimensional. Not as interesting as the Sigalas Rabaud 2001. Not sure it will develop into anything special, but 2001 is a fine year, and so I will leave my remaining 6 magnums & 8 bottles alone for 3 or 4 years. Definitely not as exciting as it was 2 or 3 years ago.

While this was had plenty of depth and power, with apricot, honey, and lots of botrytis, it was terribly out of balance, waaay too sweet and lacking in acid, to the point where for me it was cloying and not very pleasant. Of course you expect Sauternes from a good year to be very sweet, but without the acidity it's too much.

A half - the first of twelve purchased yesterday at Strakers. Deep golden colour and a nose dominated by dried apricots, a hint of almond and a little botrytis. The nose is good but the flavour is better. Lovely, seamless wine; very creamy with lots of apricot again and a bit of botrytis. Great balance and plenty of finesse on the finish. Drinking well already but years ahead of it.

A bit closed. Medium yellow (darker than bottles I have had since day one), nose of butter, citrus and vanilla. Viscous palate of integrated sweet peach and vanilla tinged ripe pineapple. Flavors very intense but still a bit primary. Fantastic balance, just floats off of the tongue. Long finish. This can easily gain 4-5 points with time.

No formal notes. This is drinking incredibly well right now. At first, the wine had an intriguing note of minerality enveloping the sweet notes of honeycomb, which faded with air. Just a delicious Sauternes that is clicking in all cylinders. Not cloying at all, well balanced with notes of sweet peach, hint of brown sugar, and apricots. Pretty stunning.

Really nice wine but lacking complexity. Gorgeous pureed peach reduction on the nose, apricot, mango and orange zest. Palate is super fat, rich and plush but with acid to balance. Really stuffed and packed with flavour but still a bit primary at this point and lacking the botrytis complexity. Great wine with good fruit but lacking a bit.

Powerful, strident wine full of toffee, honeysuckle, zesty marmalade, limestone dust and a little autumn leaf. Fat and luscious but there is the structure to carry it. The botrytis has taken center stage. A excellent wine but I do miss the floral freshness of its youth.

Medium gold in color. Big texture, needing a bit more acidity to hold it down. However, good flavors with coconut, honeysuckle, peaches and apricots. Enjoyable, but needing a number of years more to fully come together.

French Wine Tasting in Lavandou Restaurant, Washington D.C. (Lavandou Restaurant, Washington D.C.): Now this is of course a fantastic vintage from Sauternes and Lafaurie Peyraguey delivers the goods, with crystalline spiced apple and a hint of white caramel and botrytis spice showing. Very rich yet nuanced with clove and chamomile on the palate, finishing with orange spice on its fine finish. Actually, one of the more open 2001s these days it seems (compared to a more closed Raymond Lafon we recently had tried). WOTF

Excellent Sauternes that's notable not just for its sumptuous honeyed fruit but for its strong botrytis character, with a woolly scent that keeps all of that luscious fruit from coming across a little too slutty. Rich, golden, and deep, already into dried-apricot territory, I wouldn't exactly call it "mature" but it's showing so much there's certainly no obligation to wait.

The wonder of the week. Absolutely astonishingly amazing. By first whiff a GAAA-GAH-GAH inspiring golden Sauternes that goes far beyond any pennalistic points’ scale. But, since we’re all in to this points game, some kind of points need to be awarded. I awarded the Suduiraut from 82 with my personal highscore (back in ‘89, with 98 points – and no Yquem still having beaten it – much anticipating my 2001 Rieussec and any year’s wage Yquem happenstancingly hopping my way.) Need I describe how orgasmically it came around with the cheese plate or how it seducingly oiled my senses and sensors with the pleasures that go beyond any Holy Book’s descriptions of “divinity” when the second coming occurred with the desert that was served shortly afterwards? ...I think I had tea... Also. Maybe... 98 p. (I hate giving points this high...)

Nose: Offers a telltale nose of pear, citrus fruits and a bit of peach
Palate: Thick and rather unctuous on the attack, showing plenty of pear notes and good mouthfeel. Decent on the mid-palate but it was a bit short on the finish. An elegant wine with quite some time left before it starts to hit the maturity plateau. Definitely an infanticide I think.
86 points at this stage. But I'm sure the score can only get better as time goes by

G6 (Kevin): Golden color. Honeycomb nose. Tastes of pear, peach, honey, wax and apricot. Good acidity but extremely heavy and tiring to drink. Very full bodied. Way too much botrytis for my personal taste. Strange, I liked this much better in the past.

From a half bottle. Intense, luscious fruit, and now quite well developed. It could perhaps do with a bit more acidity to freshen it up, so I am not sure that it is for long keeping, but it was quite enjoyable. Only 23 more halves to go!

Opened this on a lark, it's Christmas Eve, why not. In the glass, now a light to medium amber color. On the nose, honey, orange, and a bit of an alcoholic port note. On the palate, oranges, lychees, honeysuckle, caramel, dried apricot, and vanilla, with a fat creamy texture that ultimately resolves to a clean, light finish. Not as unctuous as it was four years ago, but new complexity and more balance is emerging. There are many years ahead for this one.

Paired with an apricot tart. Was worried about the nose as soon as I poured into the glass. At first thought that it might be corked(it wasn't). The nose was somewhat closed with a bit of a mustiness. Didn't find that the nose opened up even with time and air. In total contrast, the palate was lively and lush all at the same time. Flavors of peach, apricot and fig. The mouthfeel was pure heavy cream. Plenty of acidity to keep the back of the palate clean. Would purchase again.

Burnt caramel, apricots, hazelnuts and peaches on the nose. Thick, vicous palate. I have nothad this wine in a couple of years, and this bottle had a little less acidity than I remembered, so it was a touch more cloying, but still one of my favorite reasonably priced 01 Sauternes

Tried this young to see how it is progressing - I have more to come. Wonderful Sauternes. Deeper and richer than a typical LP. Honey, and tropical fruit (I got mango) notes. This feels straight-forward now, but you can see where is going, due to the structure, acidity and fruit. I'll wait another five years before trying this again.

This wine was highly anticipated because of my surprise for the 2003. This wine is also in the big leagues of Sauternes. The wines aroma is amazing. Creamy carmelized orange with honeyed apricot and kiwi. the fruit is in perfect balance with the acid and i think this one will get gobs better with time. Secondary flavors will abound here. The mid palate revealed carnations with lavender and macademia nut butter with citrus jammy fruit. This wine is a deeper color and more rich than the 2003. This has hints of carmelized pears apple and cinnamon strudle. This wine is magnificient now but will be in serious Sauternes neighborhoods as it ages. This wine will be able to hang with D'Yquem in my view. Strong buy for this cellar worthy smooth succulent Sauternes. This wine has serious complexity deep in it that will emerge with age.

Tasting Group Dinner - Miscellaneous Whites (Ocenaire, Minneapolis): From half bottle. Really delicious stuff. Rich medium gold color. Complex layers of petrol, orange marmalade, orange rind, caramelized sugar, and honey. The petrol/diesel character really shone through after some time in the glass. Really well balanced. Terrific acidity. Somewhat more advanced than I was expecting (perhaps because of the smaller format?) My WOTN.

375 ml bottle. Opened and served with plain cheesecake over New Years. I know it's too young, but couldn't resist, as I hadn't opened any '01s before. Color is deeper straw than the 2003s I've got, but not yet to the deep gold of some older bottles I'm still holding. Pineapple, apricots, coconuts predominate the nose. Probably heavier botrytis aroma than I generally prefer. The palate was of like character, sweet but with nice acidity, particularly as matched against the blunter taste of the cheesecake. Someone else here noted a faintly acrid smell and taste; definitely noted that, but I hope it's just a case of catching it in mid-integration. Still, this is very tasty stuff.

This is waaaaaaaay young, but very tasty. Rich tropical fruit accented with poire William, rich accents of orange zest, caramel, and coconut. Rich sweetness, quite intense, but there is an acidic backbone. There is a slight bitter edge to the orange/tangerine notes, which I find quite appealing. Excellent length, concentration. Will check again in 5 years.A-

Medium golden color. Forthcoming nose of volatile high tones (which one person called "paint thinner" and will be excessive for some), wood, coconut, botrytis, and pineapple. Mid-weight in Sauternes terms, moderately sweet but held in check by firm acidity and some citric tones to balance the tropical fruits. Excellent harmony and length. I am surprised that this is showing so much in the way of secondary development. Definitely no crime to drink now while waiting for the more slowly evolving wines from this vintage.

One of Erics' out of 375ml. You really have to pay attention to this wine as it changes flovor profiles over time in the glass. Honey and lemon grass with a bright acidity in the beginning leading to a more nutty profile over time. Just wonderful stuff.

JADE Dinner Party: Exceptional Sauternes, that seems to me to be further developed than the 01 Rieussec. Great tropical fruit flavors w luscious Pineapple, and balancing acidity that makes this wine a joy to drink. Paired well w the Meyer Lemon Panna Cotta w candied Ginger, and the Dolce Gorgonzola which followed in the cheese finale. Joyce who normally doen's care for dessert wines, gave this one a Thumbs Up!

I've never been disappointed in this wine. This is continuing to drink very well but I suspect it may be starting to shut down. The acidity really comes through and some of the florals are not as prominent as they were a few months ago. Still very much in balance and not at all cloying.

Tasted from a 375ml bottle. Must be in a closed phase, because I did not get much depth out of this wine. Notes of caramel, pear liqueur, and tangerine. Seemed sort of light, was expecting more body and concentration. Fresh acidity on the finish.

wow, this has gotten Way better since I had it last time.It has definately picked up weight, complexity, and viscosity, at least it seems so to my palate. Still pale straw color. This nose is beautiful, with a blast of honeyed botrytis, lemon zest, citrus, white flowers, really impressive. This has always been a bit tight, but this bottle shows more roundness and a thick lashing of apricot, lemon merengue, and a terrific uplifting acidity that gives it a lazer focus. A bit of cane sugar maturity starting to happen on this one.

Tasted February 25, 2005 at the Courtyard by Marriott, Room 221, in San Diego, CA. Opened and served immediately in hotel water glasses. Whoa Nellie! Even drinking this in a hotel water glass a numb nut like me can still see clearly this wine is all that and a bag of chips. Nose was a little difficult for obvious reasons but it still gave up some tropical fruit and nutiness. Flavors of passion fruit, peach, almond, cream and on and on and on. This young sauternes is about as balanced a sauternes as I’ve had in quite sometime. Deliciously sweet right now. This is only going to get better. Hold for a minimum of five more years if you can. Man am I glad to has some of this in the cellar. Recommended.

Not decanted. From 375 ml bottle. Golden straw color, with a faint tinge of green. Its nose was closed at first, but began to open in the glass after a few minutes. The next thing we knew we could smell it from across the room: loads of poached bartlett pears (my wife's comment), orange peel, honeysuckle, and a slight chemical odor. This wine is somewhat viscous, coating the sides as we swirled our glasses
On the palate, more incredible flavors of pear and orange peel, but also light honey and dried apricots. Sweet, but not overwhelming - the acidity really kept this wine light and well balanced. Incredibly long finish: 45-60 seconds.
I really enjoyed this wine, but my wife REALLY enjoyed it! This was her first experience with Sauternes, and she didn't know what to expect. After her first sip, the eyes widemed, licked her lips, and held on as the ground moved beneath her feet. It was truly special to see her react so positively to this wine. Best part of all, the wine is inexpensive -$20 or so for a half bottle.

Saturday 4/2/05: Opened the morning of an offline dinner, poured a taste and left open to get some air. Chemical notes on the nose, a quick taste shows citrus and good balance. More people were coming to the offline, so this was corked back up and put in the fridge in favor of a 750. Score reserved. Sunday 4/3: Brought to Dad's for dinner. Chemical note is gone, replaced with citrus and honey, good but needs some more air. Remaining half of the bottle was vaccu-vinned and put in the fridge. 93 pts. Monday 4/4: The last half of the 375 was brought to Randy & Laura's while watching the NCAA game. This bottle has now been open since 8:00 AM Saturday morning. Notes of honeysuckle blossoms, orange peel, honey and apricots. Palate is lush and viscous, with great balance and acidity. Flavors of citrus peel, honey and peaches. Great stuff. 96 pts.

This was served with a white chocolate mousse cake with raspberry sauce which my wife purchased at a local bakery. The bottle opened by AllRed was a 750ml. It was not overchilled. This was my WOTN. Wonderful overall package with balanced biting acidity. Long focused finish. 95+ points.

We were a bit disappointed when we opened this, at least I was. The 01 La Tour Blanche consumed over the weekend buried it. A waxy, apricot-peach laden nose. On the palate the wine initially lacked focus, it didn't have that snap of acidity and botrytis that was so endearing with the La Tour Blanche. A cane sugar element was present in the finish. Closing down I guess. My most disappointing out of 01 to this point. If I am being unfair, I hope to be wrong because I have alot!

Drank out of 375 slowly over the course of a week. About halfway through on day 5 or so. Nose is petrolly. The light colour and unyielding nose belie the huge palate of orange blossom, marmelade, honey, ginger and spice. The texture is oily and viscous. There is a sense of high alcohol on the finish but it remains balanced and harmonious. This is much better with a few days of air so I would bet it will go long in the cellar.

Second half-bottle in as many days, with consistent tasting notes. Slightly more acidity on the palate than the first bottle, but nothing significant enough to change my overall opinion. As good as the flavors are with this wine, it's the texture that really drives it; creamy, smooth, full-bodied. I'm going to have to find more of this for the cellar.

Light to medium gold in color, a little oily as it swirls in the glass. Honey and orange aromas on the nose, but these relatively moderate aromas only hint at the taste. It's fat and creamy on the palate, totally smooth texture without going over the top, and no sign of the 13.5% alcohol. Rich without being cloying, it's a pleasure to just let this glide over your tongue. Orange, lychee, and notes of honey are present, and only a little acidity on the back palate, just enough to let you know you're still drinking wine and not a light syrup. Just a delight to drink. I wish I could tell you how it evolved in the glass, but it didn't survive long enough for that...

Medium to dark yellow. Scents of rubber and petroleum. To begin with I almost had this pegged as a riesling, the nose considering. But clearly, the flavour of this wine was Sauternes all the way. Medium bodied with delightful and delicate oily fatness. Fresh and tinkling with orange peel flavours intermixed with honey. Harmonious aftertaste. 89 points

Really amazing. I was a little concerned about the somewhat light color but this stuff is thick and intense with a great acid balance. Long long finish and the taste keeps changing. Good enough that ideally you should drink it on its own and not complicate it by pairing it with some desert. Honey, cassis, a little strawberry, flowers.

Great, complex nose. Honey, ginger, peach cobbler, bit of a petrol-y note too.
Kind of hoping for a bit more acid.
Might give another 5 years for the next one, but definitely a mature Sauternes

Eye: Orange-brown center to copper-green rim.

Amber in color. Expressive nose shows mix of orange citrus, apricots, baking spices and honeysuckle. Sweet and viscous in the mouth showing dried fruits marmalade, medium(+) acidity and a very long honeyed and saffron perfumed finish.

Day 4: Largely the same.

Deep burnished but clear gold colour; lovely integrated nose of cloves, toffee, burnt orange, and with a clean lift; taste = wonderful balance of noble rot and acidity. A very fine wine, although there was something missing for me here, which I find difficult to put my finger on. Perhaps a dying away on the back palate or a little short on mouthfeel? Perhaps it is a matter of vintage.

On the palate, more oranges, apricots, lychee, and a bit of caramel, paired with a full-bodied, smooth, and relatively long finish. No rush to open this, there are many years ahead, but it's at a nice plateau right now.

Good stuff.

Excellent.

Could smell this all day :-)
Mouth: Like Wine-Strategies' wine: could've used a tad bit more acid.

Champagne & White Burgs at Meritage (Meritage, St. Paul): Dark yellow color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 40 minutes. This was ridiculously good. The nose explodes from the glass offering ripe aromas of peach, apricot, orange mermalade, honey, lots of enticing botrytis, florals. The palate is dense and unctuous, full bodied with gorgeous layers of fruit: peach, pear, apricot, orange zest, and spice and honey, intense long finish. Wow, this was fantastic.

Day 2: Maybe a tad more integrated, but hasn't changed much.

13.5% ABV. Medium gold in the glass. Nectar-like nose with a bit of a waxy glue quality upon opening. This diminished with time (tasted over several days).

Not as interesting as the Sigalas Rabaud 2001. Not sure it will develop into anything special, but 2001 is a fine year, and so I will leave my remaining 6 magnums & 8 bottles alone for 3 or 4 years.

Also.

Good enough that ideally you should drink it on its own and not complicate it by pairing it with some desert. Honey, cassis, a little strawberry, flowers.
