4th Saturday Brown Bagger (J&S’s): Deep ruby red color with notes of kirsch, licorice, blueberry and plum. Full-bodied. Plum, fig, raspberry , kirsch, clove and spice on the palate with a finish that sails on. Gorgeous. 96+ pts. (R&D)

Ruby colored, young to the eye. Plum, coffee, touch of sweet tobacco, delicate balance of heat and sugar, very long, warm finish. Really, really good. Tasted from 375ml. Not a port expert, but this seems like it has runway.

Given the very high ratings given to this wine I was curious to see how I would like it. My experience was not the same as was experienced by members in recent posts. The problem may have been a result of the cork which was bone dry and totally disintegrated as I removed it from the bottle. I purchased all of my bottles at auction and I hope other bottles have much better corks. The wine was not singing for me and seemed very young and closed. Nothing particularly wrong, just not the spectacular experience I was hoping for. I will wait several years before trying another another bottle.

Deep, deep red - almost black! Wonderful fruit with the tannins holding everything together so the sweetness doesn’t become overbearing. No rough edges at all, everything beautifully integrated. A lovely punch of alcohol warmth at the end.

The color is medium ruby with garnet reflexes. On the nose there are very pronounced aromas of dried dark fruits like plum, cherries and figs. There is also some roasted hazelnut and little smoke. The wine is sweet but due to the high acidity extremely well balanced. The tannins are medium. The wine is high bodied. The flavors on the palate are also very pronounced and similar to the nose. The finish is never ending. I decanted the wine for about 4 hours. Next time I will do it shorter (1 hour) because I had the impression that the wine lost a very little of depth. I had this wine to a chocolate soufflé which was just a perfect pairing. Glass I used: Riedel Vinum Port
juicy dark berries, good acidity and a lot of elegant sweetness. Full bodied. The wine does not show any ageing and is round and still in its youth. Beautiful wine with still decades ahead.

This was both deep and dark, as well as fresh and elegant. An absolutely stunning wine, with blackcurrant, figs, dark cherry, spice, elegant tobacco and cedar. The finish is long, and there is enough acidity to make this a very interesting wine. Currently drinking well already, but this will last so much longer.

Deep, dark, inky purple/garnet in color with no signs of aging. Full, forward & fragrant nose of ripe fruit aromas of dark cherries, blackberries & dried figs with overtones of spices, floral & smoky notes, earthy/dusty notes, coffee/cocoa, sandalwood, pepper & hints of tobacco & cedar in the background. Full bodied with an excellent concentration of well balanced & silky smooth textured, dense, ripe fruit flavors of blackberries, dark cherries & dried figs with exotic spices, pepper, minerals, herbs & a hint of vanilla. Long lingering smooth finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & extended airing but even at 30 years of age, it has the potential to continue developing further with additional aging at which time it may merit a higher score (98+). A lovely & powerful Port.

This is the second time I've had 1992 Taylor Fladgate and is just as good as the last showing, that is utterly fabulous. Brighter and fresher than I'm used to when it comes to Port, this is certainly dense, hot and extremely ripe, but it has exuberant high notes that really set the aromatics off and lend vivacity to the finish. Aromas of raspberry and cherry preserves, perfect prunes, dark chocolate, minty herbs, violets, copious subtle spice notes... On the palate it is full, velvety, warm and spicy, tannins are pretty much resolved and smooth, lending immense texture and depth. Dynamic finish; sweet, warm, and extraordinarily long and complex; berry and stone fruit notes swing wildly between fresh and cooked, myriad spicy and chocolatey tones rumble deep, beautiful suspicions of candied citrus, cigars and wet stones flit about. Obviously still in its youth, but very fun to drink now, especially with some Stilcheton. This note is after 24+ hours of air.
Three years on and no change in score. Managed a clean cork extraction for once and the sediment stayed nicely packed so was able to decant 95%. Slow to open up in the glass but well worth the wait. Character much the same as previous note, but a touch more peppery which I do like.

2021 Athens Wine Event , An event to make up for the last 2 years (Spondi , Athens): Served blind and albeit we tested the water with ideas of this being something out of the ordinary the table focussed on this being an 80s port. Impressive wine and really was the closing wine of a superb flight and albeit palate fatigue was there the wine reinvigorated our will to taste more and claimed it’s spot. Supple, soft and although with lots of presence and density never felt anything but elegant and balanced. This is what great ports are at the end of the day and this wine flew the flag . 94,95,96 just numbers , the wine was just superb.

Below are notes taken over the four day period of drinking this wine. Opaque black/purple color. Bare hint of red in the rim. Fragrant spiritous, plum and exotic spice bouquet. Velvet glove over a steel fist! Saturated black fruit flavors with excellent structure for balance. Long, long finish, around 3-4 minutes, which leaves a lingering milk chocolate aftertaste. After 29 years this Port is only beginning to approach maturity. Taylor Fladgate has a reputation for longevity, but 29 years, I can’t decide if this is a flaw or a feature. This really needs 5-10 more years to reach full maturity and will hold for 20+ years afterwards. Regardless, it’s an amazing wine now. This wine is not adequately described with “excellent” or “outstanding” adjectives. “Profound” is more accurate. So why 98 points instead of 100 points? Should one wait 35-40 years After release for a completely mature wine? I’m dubious that it’s practical in the 21st century. That said, it’s one of the best Ports I’ve ever had!

Pnp at home on Sunday night. Looks incredibly youthful, dark garnet with purple reflections towards a thin translucent rim. Equally youthful on the palate with smokey dark berries and good freshness. No noticeable alcohol. Curious to see how this develops in the open bottle. PS: Had a sip on day 2 (barely any difference to day 1) and then a glass on day 3 when the wine comes across as still very youthful but now exceptionally fragrant with lots of smokey dark fruit and tobacco notes - superb wine but still way too young for my taste. Very long and intense finish. Wow. Wonderful but would wait at least another 10 years here. 95+

Enjoyed at the conclusion of a family celebration dinner and enjoyed along with chocolate cake for desert.
Displays a deep, mostly clear ruby color with garnet edges. Still fruit driven with ripe red and black plums, juicy blackberries, and candied cherries. Silky, elegant and smooth, with a well integrated structure. Very complex with toasted nuts, pie crust, chocolate, and nutmeg in the mix. Finishes long. Requires decanting as there is considerable sediment. This should easily develop and drink for many more years. Outstanding!

Deep purple color with a bit of pink at the rim. Bouquet and flavor of blackberries, black cherries, dust, and pepper. Wonderful density, intensity, and grip with excellent balance as well and a very long finish. Lovely viscous mouthfeel. Much improved after airing overnight in the decanter. Another extraordinary and memorable port from Taylor.

Absolutely stunning. I first tasted this wine in 2010 and rated it at 100 points then. More mature now and still 100. Purple, almost black. Full bodied but exceptional control and finesse. Layer upon layer of black fruit but manages to maintain its definition and control. Underlying spiciness contributes to the impeccable balance. Profound. ******

Second Sunday Group: 2006 vs 2007 Napa Cabs/Blends (R&D's): Standard 750ml courtesy of our hosts. Nice bouquet of cherry, raspberry liqueur, kirsch and black fruit. Cherry liqueur, plum and kirsch on the palate. Long finish. Still on the young side, I might consider holding until 2022+.

Dark purple with pink edges. Incredibly intense nose, black cherry, dried cherries, dark soil, blackberry and exotic spices. Delicious rich dark fruit and dark chocolate flavours and incredible smooth fuzzy mouth filling tannins. The finish is more rich and delicious then sweet or aggressive.

Wine with friends (at Lake Michigan) (Mike and Lori's (near Shelby MI)): My WOTN/Weekend. Pop and pour, this was still young and needed some air. The cork also crumbled here and we decanted thru a coffee filter. Note to self - next time pack the Durand. Purple in color. Lovely nose with black cherries, raspberries, dark chocolate, slight raisin. On the palate, this is young but deep and layered. Black raspberries, raisins, black cherries and some spice. Smooth without showing any heat. Long finish. Lovely.

Lovely bouquet of wild blueberry jam and cassis. The way the taste evolves is very interesting: it starts out with the standard fruit (mostly blueberry) you would find in any LBV, but then as you move it towards the back of your tongue, a sharp burst of acidity (and slight bitterness) kicks in, revealing candied fruits including citrus rind, apricot, and pineapple. Finally, the acidity subsides, giving way to figs and raisins on a finish that seems to last forever.

Extraordinarily pure flavors of violets, blueberries, and cassis. As pretty as Mozart's flute and harp concerto. Similarly facile, perhaps, but port is about prettiness, not profundity. Indeed, I would say that port's greatest attribute is the purity of its fruit, even after decades of aging. As for when to drink this, I would suggest every year from now until the time you pass away.
We had this beautiful wine with pecan pie tonight. The immediate reaction by all was "this is really good". I do not serve many wines where everyone just blurts out that feeling at the same time. Still seems quite young and it always surprises how youthful vintage ports can be after so many years in the bottle.

I do not drink much Port. Frankly, unless a Port is 40-50 years of age, in most cases, it's too young for me to enjoy. On the one hand, this was no exception. On the other hand, I get the quality. For tasters willing to wait 25 more years, they will reap the reward of an incredible wine. This is still inky, black in color. The wine is dense, giving you the choice of eating it, or drinking it. It was amazingly sweet, yet not cloying. There was a beautiful purity of black, dark red and blue fruits with raisins and chocolate that would be hard not to miss. The wine paints your teeth, gums and palate black purple. But it remains almost unformed at this youthful stage. Your mileage might vary...
Just incredible. Just starting to lose the upfront sweetness but has amazing depth and nice soft finish. Entering a great place with decades of life ahead.

{750ml, PnP} In a special place right now with some primary sweet fruit still hanging in there, but only just, with the balance composed of lovely secondary development. The opposite of angular, with delicate composition that renders this, at times, quite weightless. Which is not to say this is lighter, or even lean, no, it's quite full, but with prodigious acids and a cool, seamless nature to it all that presents the texture as silken, more than anything else. Med+ finish, with the next 10-20 years definitely in the zone, one that this wine is only just now entering. EtOH is fully resolved. Can only imagine how this might have shown with 4 or more hours of aeration in decanter - but the cigars (and the wait staff) weren't going to wait). highly recommended
Taylor Vintage Port Vertical (Los Angeles, California): Very dark, almost black, faintly cloudy, with garnet flashes at the rim. After 3 hours in the glass, the nose started to open. But on the palate, the concentration of blue and black fruits is stunning. Pure, primary, lightly peppery, very persistent through the finish. Fine structure also, with massive tannins and juicy acidity. A great Port, still very young and linear, to cellar for decades. 11 hours in decanter.

A late last bottle our hosts graciously opened after most of the guests had left, this was just beautiful and a great way to end the evening. Popped and poured, this was elegant with aromas of violets and lavender, potpourri, cassis, blackberry, brown sugar and plum. Flavors of plums, cassis, licorice, blue fruit and kirsch, with chocolate and caramel nuances on the lingering finish. Lovely, and though it will no doubt last many years, it is drinking very well now.

This was a superb capstone to our tasting of RP/WS 100-pt rated wines. By the time we got to the port, our taste buds were pretty well exercised. But even at that late moment in the evening, it stood out as an exceptional, structured but generous port - the best I ever remember tasting. I would drink this wine any place, any time, at any point in a meal or without food.

1992 Retrospective Dinner (New Buffalo, Michigan): Opened by Mark. From 375ml. This 20 year old port was still a baby. Not decanted. We drank this with dessert of Buche au Chocolat with creme anglaise and a cheese course. Dark crimson. Rich and voluptuous. Notes of raisins, brandy soaked cherries and medium toasted oak. No rush to drink this. Still has room to improve and integrate. 93+ points.

Dreamtasting #4 (Restaurant de Watermolen, Kasterlee): Pretty tannic and closed upon opening, but after a while this becomes an extremely soft, round and gentle wine, with impeccable balance and well hidden power. Melted chocolate, black cherries, asian spice. Still very young, but starting to get approachable. Will probably gain in rating in the next 5 years. 18.5/20

Concentrated and still youthful Port wine. A lot of black berry fruits. The tannin is soft and round, but powerful and a good bite at the same time. Compared to my note from 2009 I scored the wine a bit less. Does that mean the wine is in its reticent stage now? Possibly, but with some airtime this is still (or already) so beautiful! There is some alcohol noticeable, but it could well be that is because the wine was served a bit too warm. Great wine with a long future!

4th Saturday Brown Bagger (Rich & Dana's): Domino made a batch of brownies for dessert, and Rich decided it was time to open the first bottle of his case. This is a great young port, but damn is it young. If I had any, it would be another ten years before I considered opening it, and even then it will probably be too soon. Still, quite a good wine though. Deep ruby color with aromas of currants, backberry and cassis and florals. Flavors of blackberry and cassis, spice and blueberry. Picks up a subtle caramel tone on the finish. Hold until 2025+.

Saxum vs. the field (Palate in Glendale, CA): A bit tawny on the NOSE, with wafts of alcohol poking through candied red fruits. A tad alcoholic on the palate, with a pleasing pecan-like note providing a nice counterpoint to the inherent sweetness; a touch of funkiness added complexity. This seems as if it’s just starting to show hints of age – I can only guess that this will be stunning in 20 years, as this is the oldest vintage port I’ve tried, and it’s the first I’ve actually enjoyed. Thanks to jdietz for popping this!

Rhone Rangers tasting (Vinens verden, Odense): Black color with a red hue. Very exciting nose with clearly delineated notes of ripe cherry, raisin, dried dark red flowers and honey. On the palate there is an almost boiled down concentration and intensity with very potent and ripe black cherries, leaving some room for dried fruits, raisins, figs and a bit of dried flowers. The texture is sweet and velvety like honey, and although the alcohol is leaving a warm touch on the finish, it is almost as if you do not notice it. An amazing port with surprising elegance and finesse along with the amazing power.

From a 375. Decanted about 8 hours and consumed over 90 minutes. Wonderful nose of concentrated black fruit: raisins, currants almost. Big and full in the mouth with layer upon layer of black fruit then chocolate and mocha. A bit of heat and tannic bite, but very, very good. Too young for sure, but this baby has everything in the right place! I am sure score will improve.

Decanted for 2-3 hours. Opaque black body with a very tight purple rim; not particularly "porty" nose, more dense youthful black fruit than alcolholic monster; no edges through the palate and no immediate burn either. Dense silky black fruited on the palate; smooth, long; somehow a "contained" feeling about it. Too young really but lovely promise...

Occasional tasting group: Wines with 100 Parker Points. (@ L in Z): Full bodied. Soft. All sorts of black fruits. The tannin is incredibly beautiful; soft and powerful at the same time. Elegant power with an extremely long aftertaste. Even though you expect a quality wine like this (and of this age) to be in a somewhat closed stage, the wine is still in its opulent primary stage. This might be a port wine that never really closes and will be a beauty all of its long life.

Decanted for 5 hours. My initial fears of infanticide were immediately put to rest upon first approach. Nose of dark fruit, mineral and spice transfered fully to the palate, with a full, long finish. Solidly tannic across the board, this is definately very young, but luckily not in a dumb faze at the moment. Fabulous now, but will only get better.

Thursday Night Tasting Group: Served blind. Those with some Port knowledge thought a young vintage port. Others, including myself, felt it was "port like". Everyone agreed it was hot and rough. None of us realized we were drinking a Parker 100 pointer! If I had any in the cellar, I wouldn't want to revisit for another ten years. Right now, it's just a brute.

Profound. ******

Served non-blind.
