Color: very dark tawny brown gold with viscous legs Nose: medium-full intensity. Complex sherry nose with warm buttery aromas. Body/flavor: medium/full body. Sweet sherry flavors with some sharp notes. The half bottle is showing its age... still very enjoyable finish to NY Eve dinner. Aftertaste: lingering

Tawny-brown color, clearly much further along than the '83 and '01s served either side of it. That said, the oxidation wasn't at all unpleasant, it was very much like drinking an amontillado--caramel, orange rind and earl grey tea.

Mature Rioja tasting: deep amber. On the nose, it offers intense aromas of dry ripe apricots, honeyed figs, candied orange peel, and vanilla, alongside delicate floral notes of orange blossom and acacia. On the palate, this wine is full-bodied and rich, with a silky texture and a perfect balance between sweetness and acidity. Flavors remains of over-mature dried apricots, caramelized pears, and honeyed almonds are intermingled with hints of citrus zest and exotic spices, such as ginger and saffron. The finish is incredibly long and persistent, leaving a pleasant, honeyed aftertaste on the tongue. Drink now - already over its peak.
Un nez d'orange et pain d’épices. La bouche montre une belle concentration, c’est épicé, encore assez riche, avec une bonne longueur. Peu d’acidité, c’est délicieux, mais à boire sans trop tarder. 92 pts

Incredibly deep colour, could easily be tawny port! This is the 23rd from 24 halves, and despite the colour it is still going strong - very tertiary concentrated marmalade with a hint of sherry, a hint of bitterness (not unpleasant), wow, this just goes on and on.

Really lovely. Previous notes praising this wine were spot on. Quite mature in all aspects but still drinking nicely and the finish was amazing, rich and unctuous with lift from the acidity, the flavors just sat on the tongue.

This is liquid candied Sugar with volatile saffron, a bit of evolved nuts, some bitter citrus fruits. It is sooo long, just delicious! What a treat, second perfect bottle I enjoyed of this vintage within a short while, apparently not everyone here got so lucky.

Tour of Greece dinner (Andros Taverna): From 375 ml bottle. Much fresher vs my previous taste in 2019, this showed plenty of dried apricot and toasted walnut character, with enough candied apple, sweetness, acidity, and botrytis to be complex and well balanced.

Out of half-bottle. Fully mature and showing as a very elegant Sauternes with a fine complexity, good ripeness and a layered finish. Lots of brown spice and mineral notes and plenty of sugar left in this.

Middle class Sauterne with a short finish, everything is good except the length. I wish it had more complexity and freshness too, but ok with fruits salad at Christmas

This is my first aged sauternes. Immediately on opening there was a strong sulphur/burnt note that blew off in 30 min. Then dried honeycomb, creme brulee, apricot on nose. Mouth coating thickness. Surprising amount of brightness left on palate and medium+ finish with slight medicinal/nutty at very end. Delightful

Again from a dark half, with a focus of caramel tropical notes, baked apricot and baked apple. Tasty but not with the balance of freshness and tertiary notes required for top Sauternes

Tasted blind from 375 ml bottle. Very dark color made me think it slightly older (1986?). Apricot and dried apricot with honeycomb and burnt caramel. Good complexity, good weight. Drinking well now, this will continue to drink well for a long time.

Superb dessert wine to accompany dark chocolate. The cork was clean and the wine was a dark amber, showing the result of proper storage for nearly 30 years. Not cloying at all but a good depth of flavors. Purchased as a gift for my mom in 1095; she refused to allow me to open it for her, constantly ssying “No, no, not now, maybe next year.” Until finally in 2006 there was to be no “next year” as she passed quietly just short of her 94th birthday. Shared with good friends at a farewell dinner for them. Memorable wine that perfectly capped a delightful evening.

Brownish colour of the wine, the most mature bottle of mine, but still in a very good condition, great mouthfeel, fullbodied, dried honeycomb, apricot, razin, nutty, caramel, a stunning matured Sauternes, very tasty now, but can easily be kept for a long time, ***(*-?), 91- 92+ potential

Dinner at Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck. Deep copper in colour. On the nose, notes of honey and mushroom. Velvety smooth. On the palate, rich, unctuous, almost syrupy, relatively low acidity as is typical for Sauternes. Quite complex. A superb Sauternes.

Honey, caramel, roasted cashew, and creme brulee. Noticeable botrytis spice / bitter almond character within seconds of hitting your mouth. Sufficient acidity. Not excessively sweet at all. Starting to darken in color.
Will add score in a day or two as I follow the bottle.
Night 2: The nuttiness is more pronounced, with the bitter almond pushing it's way to the forefront. Still delicious, just not on the same level as the '01 masterpiece.

Out of standard bottle, deep golden in line with expectations from a 28 year bottle. Perfect cork soaked 2/3 of the way. Pleasant nose but didnt get a lot, could have due to less than satisfactory stemware. Carmel, apricot, botrytis, and glycerin. Some acid there but more would have help balance the profile. Overall an enjoyable wine that is likely at peak but has plenty of life left, would be slightly more concerned with 375's

Old Barolo at Tim's (Tim's): Deep amber with some copper at the core. Beautiful nose, perfumed saffron (botrytis and VA), tart dried nectarine fruit, slight oxidation. There's a waxy savoriness from age. Sweet - maybe 120g/L, feels 14% (actually 15% alcohol - holds it well). High acid and a savory-waxy phenolic bitterness. Beautiful long finish. Suduiraut I usually think of as big and ripe, but I really like the balance on this.

Have not tasted a fine Sauternes for a long time, poured a big glass by Coravin, I am choosing the most amber bottle of this, a 26 years old wine, there are bottle variances in depth and darkness of colour in my cellar, strong aromas of almonds and pumpernickel bread, on the palate this bottle is very evolved, still sweet richness, fullbodied and very creamy, dried fruit (cest) with some honey, a little like a bitter liqueur or an old fino, lacking a little the complexity I would expect, ending long with some bitterness and lively tartness, very dark amber bottles should be drunk up, and because of the high ABV of 15% pour this one very cold in your glass, ***(+)

From a standard bottle that I've owned since 1993 - 23 years ago. Wonderfully beautiful copper gold. Timid nose of pumpkin, apricot, caramel, rubber (form the botrytis) and a touch of wax. On the palate, the unctuous texture (lots of glycerin) of the attack is very pleasant. Almost velvet. The flavours are the same as on the nose. The attack lacks a bit of acidity and the sweetness is somewhat attenuated, but what is left is a pleasant bitterness and a good length - apricot, pumpkin and rubber in particular. Good wine, though I should have drunk it about 10 years ago.

Big Bordeaux XI (Kevin and Vicki's house): Drank a 2.5 ounce pour at the end of a tasting. Mostly apricot and floral. It has enough sweetness and acidity, but frankly could use a little more of both. There is good spice.

Big Bordeaux XI (Kevin's House): Nose: Not any botrytis aromas present but there was some subtle nut and fig aroma. Palate: Much less sweet than I would have envisioned. Very evolved with some fig showing and a trace of bitterness that was minimal but still there. Cool to try a 26 year old sticky but for me this was light and lacking fruit and depth.

Big Bordeaux XI with a Twist (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Amber color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Orange, peach, orange marmalade, spiced, floral on the nose. The palate has medium full body, good texture, orange, orange peel, peach, honey, spice. vvIt was a tad sharp ion the finish, though that seemed to be resolving later. 92+ to 93pts.

Expected more but was still very enjoyable. The wine looks caramel colored. The legs are slow. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like apricot and pear. It tastes like apricot. The wine has fleshy texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has low acidity.

A blowsy Sauternes if there ever was one. This clocks in at 15% abv, and it definitely shows the heat. Super intense botrytis and citrus (to the point that it comes off as very bitter). Very sweet and rich, without the counterbalancing acidity. The saving grace would be to serve this very, very cold (perhaps on ice?).

Much darker in color than it should be, for a wine of 25 years of age, with its copper, amber hue, you'd think it was at least 20 years older. The fruit is clearly on the downhill slide. While there is some sweetness remaining, and hints of candied orange peel, but you'll find more toffee, creme brulee and butterscotch flavors than sweet, honeyed fruits. The wine requires consumption.

Amber colour. High-toned nose with aromas of citrus peel, Sharpie marker, and almonds. The palate is surprisingly not too sweet, though the acidity leaves a bit to be desired as well. This lacks density on the palate, and despite its 15% abv, this doesn't feel hot, but it does hit pretty hard.

(From half bottle) Intense honeyed old school Sauternes. Dark amber color. Rich and complex nose with almond based cookies, dried apricots, marzipan, creme brûlée, freshly baked brioche and more. Attractive palate with nuts, cookies and dried yellow fruits (tangerine). Complex and attractive with good freshness (acidity).

A dark amber. Over the hill but still puts on a great face; grilled peaches, hints of sweet pineapple, orange marmalade. A tripod of bitter sweetness where the acidity leg may be an inch short. Lovely, if slightly heavy and tuckered out.
7-day update, last 200mL lying on its side in the fridge, hasn't lost a thing. This is probably in a long long final plateau.

Beautiful dark amber, almost brownish, color. So distinctively deeper compared with the other bottles that I almost suspect it might have gone bad. Marvelous nose with lots going on. Plenty of apricots, honey, and marmalade. The botrytis is not so very prominent in this bottle. Good balance and not overly sweet as Suduiraut can be. A truly remarkable bottle.

Pre Christmas Dinner at The Ledbury (The Ledbury, London): Not sure if this is a label for specific export markets or a specific cuvee. Dark, dense caramel in color just so glossy and beautiful. Ripe apricots, light honey, caramel and botrytis notes on the nose. Well balanced on the palate, rich yet firm with good acidity and feels like it can go for another 20 years easily if not more. A great match for a caramel based dessert. 93 easy

Coravin 11/21/14: Copper-reddish color, deep for its age; nose has good intensity and complexity with orange, citrus skin, raisined aromas like passito, with swirling a little more minerality; palate is full bodied, still quite sweet for its age, caramel, slight heat, slight raisined, midpalate fades quickly into a medium caramel-chocolate finish. There are a lot of flawed 1990 Suduiraut floating in the marketplace since they were released that way by the Chateau about 7-10 years ago. Unclear whether this bottle was from that set, but it does show some heat and raisined notes that imply it has seen some heat, but it also is an interesting wine and still pleasing to drink. Not one to search out, but enjoy it if you already have it. A bit more advanced than I would expect. 88-89

Drank with Oz in VT/Mistral after we devoured his kill! From 1/2 bottle. Dark, amber color. Very powerful nose of apricot, burnt orange, botrytis & marzipan, amount other aromas. Strong attack principally of apricots, orange peel & honey, but also very definite minerality, along with still-vibrant acidity. The wine had an expectation of sweetness up front, but it was not sweet. Excellent balance between fruit and acidity, wonderful complexity, great length. A lush, delicious end to an excellent meal!

The Papies Join the 3000 Tasting Notes Club (The Leadbury, London): Beautiful sauternes. Haven't come across it in 3 years and nice to see it age gracefully. Dark, dense caramel in colour just so glossy and beautiful. The nose, reveals it self from the start with ripe apricots, light honey, caramel and botrytis notes. On the palate it is full and lush with good acidity to balance the sweetness. Lacks a bit of vitality though at times feels heavy and one dimensional. Still a beautiful Sauternes. 92-93 and drink at will but has the stuffing to go a loooong way.

Generously gifted to me by Mr. Eubanks along with two halves of the '83 Lafaurie-Peyraguey. From half bottle the 1990 Suduiraut is amber colored with an underwhleming nose of apricots and not much more. In the mouth there's a lithe approach (I try to stay away from 'attack') filling out nicely over the mid palate. The finish is a little obtuse needing more acid. What I miss here is botrytis, the spicy kick I look for in Sauternes. A little limp from half bottle. Doesn't inspire pontification. About a six on the pontification scale.

Syrah and Grenache at Blackstone Steakhouse (Blackstone Steakhouse Norwalk CT.): Finished the night with this exquisitely aged Sauternes. Golden in color, this thick, syrupy wine showed a lot of fruit with mature notes of apricot, honey and pear but had some mineral notes on the long finish. What aged Sauternes should taste like. My fourth of a case of 750s. All drunk within the last several years and consistent notes.
Apricots. And not enough acid to stand up to all of them (there are quite a few). Flat mid-palate and very sweet finish with botrytis notes. Slight bitterness.
Better after some days open in the fridge. B/B-

From a half bottle that I bought so long ago, I can't recall where or when. This was a very dark amber color and I was worried that it was oxidized, but it wasn't. Palate shows yellow raisins, apricots, a surprising amount of red fruit and that wet cement quality I often get in Sauternes. Sweet, but there is acidity to balance. However, there is some midpalate weakness here; there could be more material in the middle to buffer the sweetness. With Randy at Rothmann's.

Opened, small measure poured, allowed to stand uncorked for12hrs, then recorked & in the fridge for 24hrs. Deep orange color, most 1990 sauternes are particularly dark; nose of apricot, walnut, saffron, cinnamon; palate is balanced, hint metallic in the midpalate, good apricot fruit, nice acidic balance though could be more pronounced, a bit monotone on the palate, nose>>palate; medium finish, pleasant. Much better than previous bottles, very good but not superb. Fully mature. Far better than a bottle I tried in January from a retail source. This bottle was from my cellar, stored well. 90 Day 3: Shows a lot more alcohol today than the day it was opened. Do not keep open... finish on the day it is opened. 87 Day 8: Still had a bit left. Actually, this seems to have reversed course and the alcohol has integrated again. This is more of an after dinner sipper now. Nice nose. 88

Deeply colored with a brilliant honey-gold hue. My mouth watered just looking at the bottle. We couldn't wait 'til dessert and so we had the wine steward open after our Boillot Puligny-Montrachet...and added a Foie Gras course. OMG! There was a distinct lanolin/candle wax essence to the candied almond and macerated apricot nose that (like most Bordeaux for me), made returning my nose to the glass a virtual act of OCD - swirl, lift, whiff; swirl, lift, whiff; swirl, lift, whiff... A richness and weight that filled your mouth and caressed every tastebud on your tongue, with caramelized stone fruits - again, apricots and quince. Medium acidity and a forever finish. With plenty left to carry me through my dessert - creme brulee three ways, I would have been satisfied if this was the only wine of the evening. A true experience!

Beautiful.. from 750ml.. amber colored... caramelized sugar, brown sugar, caramelized apricots, caramelized peaches, caramelized oranges, orange marmalade... round, full and mouthfilling... balanced, with subtle, hidden, underlying acidity, which quietly drives thru the finish and no alcohol to speak of... a long, long, lingering, finish, repeating initial flavors elegantly for 60++++ seconds... paired beautifully with caramelized figs, though wonderful to drink alone.. simply a pleasure to drink.. 375 ml bottle reconditioned in 2005. Color is extremely dark, like an old bourbon. Nose is dynamite with a molasses/honey/caramel note dominating. Palate is brandied pineapple, with white pepper and subtle florality showing through the midpalate to the finish. Extremely low acid and high alcohol (15%! though it is barely noticeable on the palate) make this a more hedonistic style that probably is not due to improve much any more. No worries though, it is wonderful as it is.

My first aged sauternes. Lovely amber color. Absolutely incredible nose, agree with previous tasters on the walnut, honey, and orange marmalade. Palate, however, was somewhat disappointing. It tasted too sweet and not acidic enough (a bit flabby...), and I couldn't tease out the various flavors. The finish was short. Enjoyable, but I was expecting more. I love younger sauternes (recently tried a delightful 2003 de Fargues), so perhaps this is just an aging preference.

Amber color in the glass. Nose of orange marmalade, walnut, marzipan and honey. Very nice nose. Similar flavors on the palate with the nuttiness and honey and orange flavors coming through but the finish is really short and the wine isn't as sweet as I would have expected. Definitely not going to get any better as the wine seemed a little tired. Very enjoyable but time to drink up.

Showing its age. Walnuts and honey. Interesting notes of pineapple and tobacco on the short finish. Not overly sweet but a bit flat. This wine continues to show considerable bottle variation, this one being good but not exceptional.

from a 375ml. Held up very well next to a d'Yquem 1990 375ml. exChateau, reconditioned in 2005. Didn't have the d'Yquem's nose, but was a gorgeous amber, well balanced. Am getting more...

Wonderful dark amber colour. Lots of spice, creme brulee and orange on the palate, good mouth feel and long finish. Sweet, but with decent acidity. Very, very nice sauternes.

Birthday dinner at Pu Tien (Pu Tien, Marina Square): Ex-Chateau 375ml bottle, re-conditioned in 2005. This was rather advanced for its age. Served blind, I guessed Suduiraut, but thought it was another good but slightly older vintage - 1988 or 1989 perhaps. Reddish amber, almost brandy coloured. Nose was very rich with matured Sauternes characters, with lush, thick mushrooms, umami, dried apricots, figs flavours all woven together beautifully with lots and lots of rich honey tones. With time, some nice touches of grass peeked out, giving a nice lift to the bouquet. The palate was every bit as rich. Flowing seamlessly from the nose, it was unctuous with botrytised notes of nectar, honey, sultana raisins, a touch of coconut cream and more apricots and figs and a touch of orange peel. As with so many of the great mature wines, the flavours were so nicely integrated that it was difficult to pick them apart. The only problem I had with this wine was a distinct lack of fresh acidity. It was not disastrously flabbly, but given the super-rich honeyed, almost liquer-like weight on the palate, a touch more freshness would have been welcome. This was mitigated somewhat by the drily granitic mineral backbone backbone that started emerging with time in the glass, especially at the wine's longish finish. A little paradox here - the wine attacked with lots of sweetness and little evidence of freshness, then started showing a firm, dry backbone. The sweetness must have been tamed by time, so that this is drinking quite well now, but I think another 10 years and this will be incredible. Delicious wine, fantastic with chocolate cake. Thanks Alex!

A half btl but ex-chateau and rebottled in 2005. Awesome bronzed colour looking very much like cognac. Lifted nose of apricot brandy and orange liquer. Seamless delivery of initial sweet ripe botrytis, essence of sultanas, dried orange peels and dried apricots transitioning into graceful aged sweet mahogany oak and raisins reminding me of a grappa I had. It ends suprisingly dry with a cognac styled backbone. This is the dryest sauternes I ever had , its like sweet wine for diabetics! Very interesting indeed. I could imagine Emperor Napoleon sitting on his throne sipping a glass.

A dark amber color, this possesses lots of toasted spice and oxidized brown sugar aromatics, full body and an enjoyable finish. Very Madeira (semi-oxidised) in style. There’s nice sweetness, low acidity and a full, lush texture but it lacks complexity.

Perhaps an unfair rating that is based more on my expectations for the bottle. Six of us had similar reactions. The color was deep amber, almost brown, which seemed too dark for a relatively young Sauternes. Thin on the palate without much of the butterscotch I have tasted in priors. Not flabby, just not much of anything. Shouldn't be on the decline, but I'll see with the next bottle. Maybe it just closed down for awhile...

Dark honey in color and much darker than most early 90's Sauternes that I have. This Sauternes looks almost as if it is closer to 40 years old than 20 years old. However, that all changes when you pull the cork. Flavors of honeydew, crème brulee, pineapple and a little burnt sugar coat the mouth with nice acidity. This wine was pared perfectly with the foie gras with flambéed bing cherries, balsamic reduction and quail pinot jus. Even thought the color of the wine suggests that this wine has hit its peak, it has continued to improve over the past 4 years. I expect this wine will continue to surprise and will have a longer life than most think. Drink now through 2018.

At Rothman's with Dave, Adam and Spencer. A very lovely bronze honey color. Grilled necatarines and apricots, touch of brown sugar, nnot excessively sweet, with a bit of that cement texture of Sauternes. Hard not to keep drinking this.

Just a tad lighter, drier, and more refreshing than a year ago, and still outstanding for its distinctive grilled peaches and spice. Almost designed to coax autumn in. Surprisingly easy-drinking with key-lime pie.

Shipped and recorked form the winery in 2005. Amber color, powerful nose with a lot of pineapple, burnt brown sugar, spices. Rich, thick and sweet with medium acidity. A lot of botrytis notes on the palate with again brown sugar and pineapple and orange peel notes. Persistent finish.

Tasting Group Dinner - Bordeaux (Fugaise, Minneapolis): Deep caramel/gold color. Thick, heavy caramelized honey and diesel/petrol flavors. The finish thins out a bit, and turns a touch acidic. Fully mature. Nothing like the bottle (from a different source) that I tasted a couple of years ago.

I don't imagine it gets much better than this from Sauternes (outside of Yquem, of course). A beautiful nose of flowers and sweet fruit gave a promising introduction to a palate luscious and smooth, with apricot, pear, and caramelly vanilla. There is a bit of petrol on the palate as well, and a nice acidity balancing the sweetness out. The palate leads into a 60+ second finish that is as smooth and velvety as they come. The only thing I noticed detracting this wine was the lack of weight that I imagine the top of the top Sauternes have.

Ex Chateau 375 released 2005 The color is still dark for 1990 (like all the others I have had of this release) though this bottle showed younger in evolution than I remembered the others to be... Strong boytritis on a core of apricot. medium sweetness and nice finish which is a little short. Good acidity keeps it fresh. Went great with fresh saute pineapple crepes in butter & Sauternes reduction sauce.

Deep gold color. Classic aromas of lychee, acacia flowers and honeysuckle. Not as rich as the bottle I had 7 months ago but the medium-sweet fruit is nicely balanced by fine acidity and has good length. This 375 ml. bottle was purchased ex-chateau last year...time to drink up!

Howell Mountain Cabernet (One Particular House, Tustin, CA): I was a little hesitant to give this wine the score that I did, but then I saw that Parker put the wine in the same ballpark. Fascinating wine whose only real flaw is a thumb on the sweet side of the scale. Perfect pairing with blackberry pie: the blackberries were picked today, almost 17 years after the grapes! The wine is very dark and golden; with quick-broiled peaches and spice. Great weight and body too.

Drank at Courtrights in the Chicago suburbs. This was recorked in 2005, which was quite surprizing (Also 15% alcohol.) Beautiful golden amber color. The nose was etheral. Orange blossom honey, burnt sugar and caramel also present. Full bodied, etheral and balanced. Lots of caramel, got hints of amaretto, too. The finish was very spicy. We drank this with foie gras, creme brulee and a browned butter almond cake. The cake was unbelievable. It paired very well. Not so well with the creme. Just a bit too sweet. The sommelier enjoyed this as well. Though this was my first truely aged Sauternes, I didn't enjoy it as much as the 2003 Lafaurie. 94 pts.

Christmas dinner w/ extended family. Deep, rich golden amber color, darker than this wine's age, and much darker than the 1990 d'Yquem I opened a few months ago. Ethereally fragrant aromas of muskmelons, candied apricots, caramel, and honey. Hedonistic. Zesty acidity that is in harmonious balance. Full-bodied and thick, yet light on its feet, with a long finish. Yum!

Sweet 16 Party for our Bordeaux (Triomphe): A dark, interesting wine. It seemed much older that it was as the most noticable quality was an oxidized, nutty characteristic that added complexity to the usual honey, apricot and marmelade. So shortage of acidity. It certainly showed well tonight, but I wonder which way this one is going. This was apparently from the original release and not the rerelease.

Served with caramel apple pie dessert. Outstanding pairing. Sauternes aroma, with big botrytis that hits the nose like a 2x4 and delights the palate, sets this wine apart, although it had to compete with a delightful '97 Rieussec. We were all stunned by the sugar deposits in the bottle. Two more to go, thankfully.

The color of this wine was amazing -- pure orange gold, with specks of sugar glittering in the syrup. I really enjoyed this wine. I wish I had about 10 cases of the stuff. It has everything you look for in a dessert wine -- sweetness, complexity, texture, color and a lingering finish with no bitterness and no steel. I'm not sure you could improve upon this gem. Thanks to James & Juli for sharing it with us.

Popped and poured from 375. A bit a funk and VA blew off after 10 minutes. Nose of marmalade with a hint of nuttiness, perhaps due to the recorking in 2005. An explosive palate of orange zest, pineapple, tropical fruits, and creme brulee, with balanced acidity. The long finish was not at all cloying.
This keeps getting better in the glass, and I will revisit it repeatedly, as I only poured a small taste before recorking and refridgerating the bottle.
For now, 87 for the nose, 94 for the palate.
Day 5: Now we're talking! This not only held up for 5 days in the fridge, it became much more expressive and balanced. A rich golden color; nose of botrytis, orange marmalade, and nuts; palate has flattened a bit, losing the notes of tropical fruits, however the lovely finish just goes on and on... Quite rich and sexy, but not so complex. The wine is now integrated to a solid 92, and is very pleasing to drink.

Decadence II (Tetsuya's, Sydney, Australia): Orange gold in colour. Unknown to the bringer of the two half bottles, both had been "reconditioned in 2005" by the Chateau. Nose showed apricot, orange peel, marmalade and almonds. Harsh acidity essentially ruins the palate and the wine thins out and almost tastes weedy on the mid and back palate. Nose seemed overblown and the palate lacked any semblance of balance.

Sherry amber, subtle nose dominated by orange blossom with hints of apricot, maple and honey, lots of viscosity but not syrupy, palate of tangy orange peel, oats, hay and charred earth, lots of acid, a little dry and hot on the short to medium finish
Note: This wine seemed a little flabby to me and my score reflects this, however, I purchased the bottle from a questionable retailer so it may have been do to unjust storage conditions, it was 15 years old when I bought it

Enjoyed this more than last time. Color is coppery amber. Nose reveals caramel, orange peel, and spice. Palate repeats the caramel with some honey and hint of spice. Seems a bit heavy in that there is not quite enough balancing acididty.

TTG Round #5 -- Champagnes and Stickies (Au Petit Paris -- Shirokane): Deep golden orange color with heavy viscosity. Clearly rich, just from the appearance. On the nose, a deep deep deep honey dominates all, with highlights of brulée and a little ripe stone fruit peeking out. On the palate, the viscosity and body carry a wine that is very sweet and still dominated by its honey character. Botrytis and enough acid keep this from cloying and the finish sees a little bit of orange blossom come into the honey. In the rich and seductive, but not terribly complex, school of Sauternes. This was so honey-driven that I was looking around for some feta to pour it over. Paint this on your lover. In other words, enjoy it for the very pleasurable thing it is, but look elsewhere for complexity and zing. At the right price, I’d still buy it. As the Byrds sang, “To everything - turn, turn, turn/There is a season - turn, turn, turn/And a time for every purpose under heaven.” Thanks Michael and Lu Ping.

I opened the lowest fill level bottle I had (very bottom neck) and there were obvious signs of seepage through the top of the cork. The nose was slightly sherried so I think this bottle might have been a little oxidized. Golden amber color with spicy exotic fruit aromas and taste, although not as powerful as I would expect. Tremendously smooth mouthfeel with the acidity bracing the sweetness very well and no presence of alcohol. Blistering long finish. Despite this bottle seeming slightly off it was still a hit and I think future bottles will show better.

This was poured at Otis' CDP. I believe Grossie provided the bottle. Starting to turn a golden color. Some interesting spiciness on the nose which carried onto the palate. Grand Cru Burgundy Dinner (Troquet, Boston): Someone brought this to dinner to try to prove that Suduiraut was a great sauternes but it backfired. Tasted March 1, 2005 at an offline so brief comments only. Leftover 750ml bottle from two days previous that was still half full. Served in Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glasses. Color was amber at this point. I find this disconcerning leading me to question if this wine is maturing already. Could this happen as a result of being open two days? Nose of apricots, almonds and honey. Flavors of almond, honey and candied fruit. Quite a bit of residual sugar (I’m guessing) visible on the sides of the glass after drinking. If you have any of these in the cellar I’d recommend pulling them and checking the color. Not gone yet but I’d be thinking about pulling a cork on one soon.

Where is the balancing acidity, where the complexity? All I can discern is a heavy syrup of ground almonds with a clean but massive taste which sullenly sits in the mouth and later stomach and refuses to develop or be digested. OK with braised apples and good with Roquefort, but basically expensive and boring. It may be a blind spot, but this is only the second Sauternes I have tasted which I didn't like (the first was a 1997 Suduiraut). 84P

Definitely mature, it was golden brown and had a wonderful nose of honey, toast and almonds. Great flavors of honey, caramel, toasted almonds and apricots. Went perfectly with the Foie Gras. I wish I had more.

Color: Golden honey. Beautiful.
Nose: Caramel, honey, apricots. Not super expressive.
Taste: Fantastic! Honey and caramel. Subtle, but rich fruits. Long, beautiful finish. Exactly what I want in a sticky wine.
Overall: General opinion was that this wine hasn't got much life left, but I think it may last a while longer. I could drink this wine all night.

Drink now, on the downslope. This vintage of Suduiraut has always aged fast, though this bottle seems significantly more advanced than a bottle tasted out of my cellar. I will plan to finish my remaining bottles in the short term. 85

WOW! The flavor just won't stop... it's like the wine stained my mouth with caramelized stonefruit... ummm.. OMG! I think this wine has changed my perspective of what is possible...

Day 5:
Now we're talking!
