Houston Northern Rhone Blowout: Consumed in a wild lineup of northern Rhones , the 81 La Mouline was still in good shape. Fully resolved tertiary with a good bit of rusticity. I think the bottle had been shaken enough from pouring that there was quite a bit of silty sediment near the end. The wine was very good, but perhaps slightly past peak

A page of history at this point. Ullage less than 3/4". Very reserved on opening. Garnet, a little tawny. Pleasing plum/prune, leather and cedar nose. Pretty unimpressive for the first 15" decanted, then opened up and really showed some deep aromas and full body. Significant tannins, very polymerized and fine grained, kind of fat and with some decent fruit still remaining. Faded away after about 45". Pretty impressive old soldier.

Cork fully saturated and crumbled a bit. Loads of freshly roasted coffee and coffee stout with notes of camp fire, damp earth, cigar wrapper, roasted almonds and faint notes of plum and black currant. The mouth is full, dense and compact, very layered and long. Still a bit tannic. Tons of sweetness on the attack, still a good amount of blackberry fruit left. Still drinking so well.

Initially I thought it might be corked, based on a hint that turned out be more of a menthol tertiary note as the wine opened up to leather and some spice. Lovely, if a bit post prime.

Great wine, if a bit short on mid palate and finish. But the aromatics and the dark flavours of road tar and pepper are to die for. needed 30mins of air to drop some slight initial funk.
