Showing nicely from magnum, this example has lots of mineral to balance its rich, black fruit and slightly truffley personality. Drinking well now with a long life ahead.

Wonderful. The attack is generous and quite rich. Great balance of structure and fruit. There is real power here, as one would expect from Angelus, though the alcohol is only 13.5%. Rich blackcurrant, damson and black cherry. Mainly primary still, though with some leather and vanilla behind. Long and good complexity. Drinking now, will be better in 10 years.

Decanted 1 hour. Decent nose and palate but nothing special, still some fruit, well integrated, smooth and easy to drink, enjoyable for an hour following. Might be at or near its peak.

So I bought a cellar; 11/12/2022-12/31/2030: Final red of my Wednesday wine committee hosting. It hurt to open two bottles - but sharing is what it is all about. I opened both bottles around 7:00 am and poured each into a decanter. Both corks were in great condition, fill was perfect, and nothing was off. These looked to be well stored, and maybe acquired directly. Definitely not an auction purchase. The nose was beautiful. Olive, tart cherry, slightest leather and earth. My tiny sip of each bottle was great. Poured back into bottle around 9:00 am and took to club. Poured into decanters to pour into glasses. This wine was different from the others. Obviously younger, but also much more complex, and at the beginning of its life rather than the end. I wasn’t able to take notes at the time, but it was delicious and had a minute plus finish. Most thought it was left bank first or super second. And really - it tasted more like a cab based wine. Really fun to serve and enjoy, but many years left.

Firm, almost stoic, old-school styled wine with a strong, tannic spine. Better on the nose, with its truffle, tobacco, mint, and red berry fruit, than on the austere, chalky palate. The wine will continue aging, but I doubt it will change much from here. Drink from 2023-2035.

Commanderie de Bordeaux: Chateau Angelus with Victoire Touton (Maison Margaux, Mpls): Very dark red color. Drank a glass over an hour plus. M60,CF40. Wow, now this is singing tonight, explodes on the nose, complex and exciting; saddle leather, a nice touch of funk, cassis, dried earth, eucalyptus, mint, wonderfully perfumed with purple flowers and prety dark berry fruit. The palate is sllek and velvety, dried wood, cedar box, cassis, outstanding purity, powerful, violets, subtle licorice, black cherry, long and intense finish. Tannins are truly polished and this is drinking beautilfully, but a lot of years left. I can only imagine where the '16, as well as the '15, goes in comparison when at this stage of life.

9th of 12, decanted an hour, perfect cork and level, big step up since last bottle in June 20, really elegant, nuanced and persistent (no more the bruiser of yesteryear!) with the roundness and generosity of a top merlot based wine, a delight with roast beef wing rib, plateau, 10+ years. VF (18.5).
Possibly one of the contenders for wine of the vintage, for myself this is best pre millennial Angelus after the magnificent 1990 and 1998. Still in evolvement, the tannin has settled, and it is a very enjoyable drink. With age the nose has taken on a very menthol note with red berry fruits and earthy undertones. The palate is tell tale 1995, and very robust, but perfectly balanced. The finish is excellent, but I think will improve with time and become more integrated with the overall experience. When this happens, this could warrant another couple of points.

Mouth where the menthol dominates at first which gives a very fresh side to the juice which then unfolds the typical aromas of the beautiful well-born Bordeaux: a magnificent fruit, coated with cigar and cedars. Complexity and tertiary aromas are present with herbaceous and earthy aromas in the second part of the mouth. Everything is linked perfectly but it lacks the depth of the great Angelus like 1990, nevertheless, the bottle gives a lot of pleasure and we remain on a high level. Beautiful earthy and herbaceous finish that stretches over a long length.
Excellent.

Welcoming 2023 with Great Wine (State Street Manor - Chicago IL): Black fruit with faintly sweet spice and very good density, showing just enough earth/ mushroom hints to add another layer of depth. I haven't had this wine in almost a decade, last tasted when it was just entering its peak drinking window. Now this can be enjoyed in all its glory.

Drank with Thxgiving dinner yesterday. Decanted an hour+. Rusty brickish, opaque color. Generous nose with deep red fruit aromas, some cigar and earth, along with some floral notes. Flavors on the medium palate matched the aromas: Plenty of red fruit, some plums, cigar box, roasted herbs, cedar & graphite. Elegant and silky smooth pour. Great concentration, excellent balance, and nice mouthfeel. Still a fair amount of tannins, but they're soft, and in no way intrusive of one's enjoyment of this wine. Also, a very long, luxurious finish. Great wine in a great place! PS: Finished this bottle the next day and it had faded somewhat, losing most of its fruit.

At lunch at Oswald’s with the Big Man who is up 106% YTD. Deep rich garnet with a hint of must in the nose that quickly vanished. Absolutely stunning deep Cab very long and well-balanced. Just about as good as old claret can be. Started with the Bollinger 2012 Rose to clear the palate.

Purchased in 2002. Cellared since. Finally “opened that bottle”. Expected little but was very pleasantly surprised. Fill showed no loss of wine. Deep red color. No hint of bricking. Decanted for several hours before drinking. Deep nose. I got lots of tar and tobacco. My wife, deep plum. Wine tasted beautiful. On its downward slope but stlll delicious. Well worth the wait.

Tasted annually, this has yet to disappoint although with development still ahead of it. For myself this is the best right banker of the year, and possibly the wine of the vintage. This still needs extended decanting, but it really pays dividends. The nose is deep and sensuous with red berry fruits and floral notes. The tannin is silky smooth with exceptional depth and balance and with possibly one of the longest finishes I've ever encountered. I've scored this slightly lower this time out as there was a very faint taint on the wine. Saved a small glass for the following day and it had further improved and was worth another point.

Beautiful rust, red color. Pretty red fruits, wet earth, lead pencil and barnyard. Red currant, sweet wood, cherry, orange peel and juicy plum with soft, supple tannins and lovely layers of flavors. Lots of silkiness and an interesting combo of brightness and beautiful age.
p.s. homemade posole

Nose was open right out of the gate with dark fruit, cigar, graphite and earth. Palate took 30min to come around and then matched the nose with a lovely balance and round texture. In a great place right now along with many 95s.

After 2 excellent experiences with this in 2019, I was disappointed to find a bottle reluctant to show us much of anything. Probably reflective of the natural heterogeneity in readiness of adolescent wines.

POP- Nose of cigar and cedar. Taste had notes of cigar and cedar, followed by loam and fall leaves. After twenty minutes the wine had opened up nicely. cigar and cedar notes intermixed with dark cherry notes and ended up with some loam notes. Towards the end of the bottle (2 hours later) the red fruit intermingled with rose water, followed by some nice subtle cigar and loam notes. The tannins were smooth throughout the entire time of drinking it. For a taste that felt light to medium weight, the taste profile on the palate lasted for a good thirty seconds.

20 Vintages of Angelus (1988-2015): All wines tasted single blind. A few observations and conclusions: It seems that until more recently, Angelus focused on late picking, big wines with too much extraction. Most pre 2004 wines we tasted did not show well and are drying out or already have. The younger vintages showed better but only time will tell if the 2004 to 2015 vintages will age more gracefully. An experienced Angelus collector mentioned a style shift towards more finesse right after the promotion to Premier Grand Cru Classe A with the 2012 vintage. It would have been great to include more of the recent vintages (we had only 09/10/14/15) to better understand when and to what extent that shift happened. Still, there are some very good wines with the 2010 being the WOTN (rated 96+ pts, the structuredness, freshness and purity of the vintage shines through), narrowly ahead of the 2008 (96pts, these 2008 right banks are singing these days and are incredibly fresh) as well as two wines with 95 pts, the 2005 (slightly closed but lots of complexity and no structural deficits) and the 2015 (showcasing the stylistic shift: there aren’t many 2015s out there that share the light- and airiness and perfect ripeness level and purity with their respective 2010 counterparts).
TN: Ripe dark red and dark fruit, luxurious oak aromas, some roasted herbs, toasty notes and some candied red fruit in the background. Medium expressive only but quite inviting nose. On the palate this has still a good amount of ripe dark fruit, herbs, earthy notes and minerality. Slightly drying tannins take over from mid palate and towards the finish. Not very balanced with a high acidity. No winner either. 89 pts.

Angélus vertical (Fribourg): Angélus vertical of 20 vintages. Main observations were : 1/ Older vintages before the mid-2000s often suffered from drying tannin and showed a lot of extraction, 2/ Younger vintages quickly benefited from aeration hence decanting advised, 3/ the fruit profile became darker over time 4/ best vintage to drink today: 2004. All wines were directly poured with no prior decant and served in flights of 4.
Tasting note: Red berry, fresh strawberry, showing precision and linearity, herbs and spices in the mix along with just hints of aging notes. Fresh with pretty grippy tannin, clearly needs more time but I do see more potential, although the lack of harmony could come to haunt this.

disappointing bottle. Decanted at dinner and never really opened up or overcame the lean, acidic initial impression. Color and nose were good and as expected but the wine did not live up to expectations or prior bottles. Put 1/2 back in fridge and let sit for a day or day and still nothing special last night. Perhaps a bit rounder and fuller but still just not showing much. Hopefully just an off bottle. I don't think cooked or badly treated for the 5 years before I owned it.....just nothing great for what is now a $400 bottle of wine. Too bad

After 21 days on a detox and in quarantine - this was my 1st option to celebrate with. Had it aired first, then decantered and it did open up as one would expect. An aged Bordeaux of this reputation had so many expectations BUT none really lifted my Father or I. Some dryness, minerality, without any of the softness one expects from a St. Emilion. Not worth the price tag.

Tasted annually, I reiterate my notes from nearly a year ago. Puzzling I seem to be in a minority of my adoration of this wine, but possibly the tannic characteristics of the 1995 vintage as a whole can be off putting. The nose is still bursting with ripe red cherry, raspberry and violet and is deeply sensuous. The depth of the wine is unbelievable and the finish is one of the best I've ever encountered pushing 90 seconds with unwavering balance. This is definitely a wine for the long haul, but is highly decadent now with half a day in the decanter. Meriting it's first growth status, this is a candidate for wine of the vintage.
Can't believe we haven't tried this wine since 2014. Rust red color with some perfume, subtle raspberry and a lighter palate at the beginning - flavors evolve into cassis, saddle leather and fresh earthy notes. Some orange marmalade, tart red fruits and iron. After a couple hours the wine develops more weight, flavors and layers.
p.s. grilled pork chops, pan-fried farmer cheese pierogis and sweet onions with caesar salad.

Glossy, dark in colour with hardly any signs of discolouration. On the palate dark fruit, plums, tobacco, spices, green pepper, earthy notes. On the palate pretty tannic still, lots of concentration, powerful and rich. Fine length. Closed down further as the evening went on unfortunately. This has lots of life left in it. 92-94

I have rated this the same score for the last 3 bottles, and this was no exception. This is an absolute powerhouse of a wine and justifies its label. It really needs air to fully appreciate it, and this had 4 hours in a closed decanter followed by 3 hours with the stopper removed. I would also recommend leaving it in the glass for an hour before drinking. It is starting to show its best with astounding depth and perfect balance, and a finish of 60+ seconds. On the nose it is still highly fruited and perhaps a little youthful, packed with black cherry and plum, with background hints of strawberry and violet. On the palate the tannin is big but beautifully balanced, and very typical of the 1995s as they move into their prime drinking window. I suspect it is is a bit too old school Bordeaux for some tastes, and is probably the reason for some underwhelming reviews. This will drink for decades. Could this be the wine of the vintage?

8th of 12, decanted 80 minutes, perfect cork and level, much as last bottle in 2015, a bit too broad and slightly brutal for my taste, much preferred the Certan de May 98 which was purer, fresher and much more nuanced, no rush. Still F (17.5).

This is a bigger wine than the '82 Calon, but less elegant. The wine is more fruit forward on the nose.
Likable enough, but for me, less of what I am looking for in a Bordeaux than the Calon Segur. That said, I've got some Flannery steaks to throw on the grill later today, and this should stand up fine in that context.

woody at the beginning but it became gentle after breathing 45 mins,
Then it came with olive, red cherry, black currant, chocolate, smokey, spicy like pepper, mushroom, perfume, leather, complex with elegance acidity, full body, intergrated tanin, powerful strength, very long lasting(+10s).
It was interesting all the flavors aroused by tertiary aromas. I m not sure if it wat so called "old style Angelus?" Btw, this wine is lovely!!!
2 hrs double decant and finished the bottle in 7 hrs

This is a powerhouse of a wine, living up to its Premier Grand Cru Classe A status, but probably not for everyone's taste as it is a throwback to classic old style Bordeaux. Hence, I assume some of the luke warm reviews. The nose is deep with black cherry and plum, with subtle background hints of strawberry and violet. It is displaying secondary characteristics and is complex and perfectly balanced, but with big steely tannin. The finish is exceptional with incredible depth and 60 seconds plus. The only negative at this stage is over harsh tannin at the end of the finish. This will continue to improve, but is fabulous now with a few hours in the decanter.

A rather more fruit forward St Emilion with pinpoint balance and structure. It has a long road ahead of it but is very enjoyable now. Dark fruits, sour cherry and a little spice. In deep secondary but not tertiary.

92 pts

Bordeaux night (Indianapolis, IN): Liked but didn't love this - lots of rich red and black fruit accented with cedar wood, fresh herbs, floral notes, and tobacco, but it feels a touch severe on the palate with the fruit feeling a bit extracted and a lot of tannin on the finish. I'd hope time brings more balance as the tannin eases, but right now it's more about promise than immediate enjoyment.

Absolutely excellent yet again, the 95 Angelus is a barrage of dark fruit with such succulence that it's almost savory-sweet. Its best days are far ahead of it, though as evidenced here there's no shortage of pleasure to be derived from opening these today.

Opened 2 hrs before tasting and poured into bigass Bordeaux glasses about 90 minutes later. Extremely closed and did not begin to open until an hour or two after that, by which time it was starting to fade. Absolutely should have decanted. Terrific nose, nice balance and a very good finish, but it was a shadow of what it could have been if I'd had the good sense to handle it correctly.

Really lovely stuff - still young but impressive. Lush and opulent but with great structure and balance. Sweet, ripe blackberry, narcissus, dark chocolate, mineral, oak. You can drink it now or wait ages on this - not going anywhere. A great complement to the Cheval alongside. 94-95.

This is a powerhouse of a wine, and improves with each tasting. The nose is wonderfully opulent with deep flavours of cherry and plum, and background hints of violet and strawberry. The tannin has continued to resolve and this has moved into secondary phase. On the palate it is top notch with an incredible depth and a 60 second finish. The tannin is still lingering on the finish but it does not distract from the overall enjoyment. It is a wonderful wine, which is drinking well now with a typical 1995 profile, but it is going to continue to improve over the next few years.
Second best bottle of the evening. Still young. A powerful wine. Give it 5 more years for it to develop and become more balanced and an even better wine.

Bordeaux with Les Trois Garcons (Östermalmsgatan, Stockholm): Upon opening immediately impressive with beautiful fruit - plum, cassis, cherry - pencil shavings, mineral and grass. A big wine but still elegant. Long and seamless. Good development over several hours, revealing some complexity. Very, very good. Could improve with some further cellaring but no harm in opening a bottle now.

Happy Birthday Kathy and Virgie (Yan's China Bistro, Walnut Creek, Ca.): Happy Birthday Kathy and Virgie, nose of black cherry, black berry, black currants, cigar box, wet slate, and dry, forest floor, more of the same on the palate, big body, bigger tasting than the 1990 chateau Pichon Lalande today, decanted for twenty minutes, very tasty, mouth filling fruit, almost at its peak drinking period and will easily last another fourteen years if properly cellared, tasted better and better as the three hour lunch went on, and a long finish and aftertaste. My experience with this wine still seems a little less than with other current tasters......in contrast to the first 3 or so bottles from the case. I decanted about 1 and a half hours......was not enough. Also, a little left for the second night was even better.

Not as voluptuous or as silky as I was expecting for a 95 Angelus. Certainly gives pleasure and benefits with considerable time in the decanter. I was a little surprised by the acidity but perhaps that will lessen with further aging. Still a good showing though.

Wow! This has totally transformed in the last 12 months and for myself a potential 100 pointer in the future. This is a magnificent wine with an incredibly deep aromatic nose of cherry and plum with hints of violet and vanilla. The tannin still has to fully sweeten but possesses perfect balance and fantastic levels of depth. At present the tannin still inhibits the finish but there is wonderful length and harmony. Once the tannin fully resolves this will be a candidate for wine of the vintage.
Enjoyed at a friend's house after 2 hour decant. Beguiling nose of crushed flower petals that grew progressively over time. Lovely and truly enjoyable fine bordeaux.

Holy cow! Drank this at a dinner at Marea. Wine actually outshined the food. Got there early and they decanted so it had an hour to breathe. Almost pauillac in nature. Total terroir. Did I detect lead pencil? Really subtle fruit. Maybe some cassis but mushroom and forest abundant. Huge wine. Peaking right now but still years to go. Best thing I’ve had in a long while.

Easily one of my favorite wines of the evening. This showed off the beautiful truffled earthiness, barnyard, dark plum, cassis, cigar tobacco, and dark chocolate. Sweet on the palate, and very elegant. Soft tannins for a 1995 from Bordeaux. In fact, bottles I had from only a year ago seemed much more tight and tannic. Perhaps it's finally starting to soften. There's also great acidity and impressive length on the finish. I'm starting to really expect big things from this wine.

This bottle was singing from the start and in really great shape. After 3-4 hours in the decanter was one of the best Angelus I've had. Falls a notch behind the 89 and 90. She's ready for business and did not disappoint. "one of the better wines I've ever had" said my brother (yet again), love that. everything from an old world style BDX. long finish, creamy cassis, tobacco, leather, cedar, utter joy.

Now exhibiting perfect colour, the nose is full of cherry and strawberry with a hint of vanilla. On the palate the wine is not for the faint hearted with hefty tannins meeting the fruit. They do need to resolve further but they are in balance and the finish is incredibly long. The wine will undoubtedly improve with more time in the bottle but can be enjoyed now if well aerated (10 hour decant) and it continued to evolve in the glass. I have marked this lower than previously as there was a touch of the cork on the wine which, although dissipated after time in the glass, did mar the experience.

Drank with Tony S at Local 3. After a 90 minute decant, aromas of leather and dark blue fruit exploded from the glass. Flavors of plum and chocolate coated the palate like velvet and hung on for what seemed like 60 seconds. I was surprised at how soft and resolved the tannins were. What a great bottle...one of my best of the year!

St Emillion First Growths (Chez Bruce, London): Quite bright and reasonably dense and fragrant. On the palate this is a bit of a bruiser but it is mellowing and pulling itself together cf a bottle five years ago. Mellows with air. Should be super but needs far more time. **(**)
This has now entered its drinking window with the tannins softening considerably compared to only 12 months ago. A glorious heady wine with swirling aromas of cherry and strawberry. This fruit explodes in the mouth before meeting a wall of softened tannins leading to a lingering finish. The tannins now balance the wine beautifully rather than previously just closing the wine down. This wine is finally meeting the high initial expectations and just will continue to get better. A long decant at this stage is recommended.

Right Bank Premier Grand Cru Classe "A" Bordeaux tasting (Karl's house): Medium dark ruby color. A beautiful nose of plum, black cherry, truffle, and toasted chocolate. A full, nice mouthfeel.

An amazing mature Angelus just at the begining of a long peak I believe. A great and classical claret nose (at first I guessed it was a great Pauillac from 1996), with a beautiful nose of cedar, truffles, earthiness, mint, pencil shavings. The mouth is vibrant, full of energy and tension, and very focused. Tanins are silky and well integrated, new oak has been digested. It is deep, long, extremely well balanced. A rather muscular wine, with a truly great style and elegance. One of the great 1995 Bordeaux I have drunk. Delicious now, it should defy time and hold well for several decades from now on.

Still showing much of its youth, like many '95 Bordeaux are today. Really blossomed after a couple of hours in the decanter. Beautiful dark ruby color. A clean and expressive nose of plum, blueberry, black cherry, cedar, truffle, and dark chocolate. Lacks the complex earthiness of the '89 and '90, but its nose is still uniquely addicting. Exudes softness on the palate and full of finesse. Good length on the finish, with medium acidity. This reminded me of a more evolved version of the '01. While this is at or near its peak, its prime drinking window should still easily exceed ten more years.

Dinner at a new French restaurant in La Jolla. Popped and poured. Fresh and great nose on opening. Could last another 10 years but is drinking really well now. Shared with a friend from France who has a large wine collection and he was very pleased.
Wines 10 years and older (including a 59 Lafleur) (MP's): My WOTN. Purple in color, ruby at the core. Very tight on pouring so we let it sit for a while. Got some more at the end of the night as well. Just a fantastic wine. The nose has dark cherries, cassis, pencil lead, and vanilla. On the palate, this is still quite youthful. Firm tannins. This is 20 years old and seems more like 10. As it opens in the glass, it comes together with layers of dark cherries, black raspberries and earthiness. The tannins are still formidable but there is a lot of fruit there. I would hold these or give them a lot of air.

An outstanding bottle. A bit tight after decant and before it warmed up, but after a few hours in the decanter when it got toward room temperature it showed great dark fruit, classic nose of tobacco, some pencil shavings, some herbs. Deep on the palate with dark fruit and savory notes, long and clean on the finish. Better than my last bottle, and I wish I had more as this clearly has many years left.

Second Sunday Group: Domestic Grenache (Frank's): Dark color. Black fruit, tobacco, herb, currant and violet aromas. Medium-bodied and nearly fully-integrated in terms of tannins, there's an abundance of dark fruit, tobacco and floral qualities on the palate as well. Lengthy finish dominated by dark fruit. Popped and poured, courtesy of Marty, this was drinking nicely from the start but will undoubtedly last a long while in the cellar. Just beginning to enter its drinking window though will certainly improve a bit too.

Structured, masculine, tannic, firm style of this normally, velvety textured wine is going to appeal to lovers of old school, traditional styled Bordeaux more than it did for me. This will be very long lived, but it's not going to have the sexy personality I love and associate with Angelus.

7th of 12, decanted an hour, perfect fill and cork, previous notes fine or better, usually very fine - deepish, dusty plum red, some development on rim; dense plummy fruit has now broadenend, slightly baked, some earth, nothing special and more purity would have improved bouquet; full and round, decent length and persistence, slightly dusty fruit though quite velvety, ready. Not as convincing as previous bottles and played second fiddle to La Ricolma 2000! Just fine (17.5/20).
Ash, pencil/graphite and iron on the nose. This was round, plush and sensual on the palate, but yet balanced & fresh with notes of some chocolate and dark-fruits. Thought that this was the Lalande... Arrggh!

°°° Bordeaux 1995 °°°: Clear red, showing some bricking at the edges. Plenty of red fruit with subtle hints of leather. Plenty of power, a pleasant sweetness and well integrated tannins. Smooth, elegant and quite long. Solid wine that will last for another 15 - 20 years. Great stuff

Medium/deep ruby/garnet core, pale garnet rim. Nose is rich and complex with ripe dark fruit - bilberry, blackcurrant - touch of earth and vanilla. Medium/full bodied in the palate, rich but with gently characterful sweet fruit, red and black berries, earth. Layered and soft on the mid-palate, balanced acids, finish isn't overly long and still shows a touch of prickly tannin. Nose perhaps better than palate but I liked this more than I thought I would.

Needed a long decant to finally show something beyond the firm finish that has always plagued this wine. But tonight I was able to discern something very lovely underneath the firm tannins that would suggest this wine is unwinding with further bottle age. Angelus never gives me much of a signature or terroir but it is opulent and impeccably made and since 1990, often impresses.

been 2 years since last bottle, perhaps my taste has changed, drinking less BDX now and more pinot, just not impressed, body was quite thin and if served blind would even think it was going down.

ATL offline at Cooks and Soldiers. I think this was pop and pour but not sure. Dark red core, slight lightening at rim. Less giving at first than the 1995 L'Evangile, it was a fuller-bodied wine and over the course of a few hours started to broaden on the palate and develop some early complexity. Plenty of tannin on the finish, this should be cellared another 5 years. Excellent with potential for outstanding.

Tons of power and richness, it's an impressive wine but the bitter tannin on the finish suggests that it still needs a lot of time for the tannin to integrate.

Look this is a really good wine. But it's not great. I saw a 100 point review of it on CT - that doesn't make sense. Nose is fun with plums, yes some earthiness, and prune. But it's not amazing. Drank it over 3-4 hours post decanting.
Palate is again really good, it's got great balance now, integrated tannins and acidity, really pleasing to drink.
But is this a GREAT wine?
It's not.
It's a very very good wine.
Or of course the bottle I had (which came from the winery straight to myself) might be slightly dud. But as I read the other reviews I can see that some people are not convinced by the wine. I suspect many of the others are giving a rating that is just similar to other ratings as it's a famous chateau.
Don't get me wrong, I would happily drink this wine every week and be happy, but does it excite me like a Margaux 1996, or Haut-Brion 1989.
It does not.
(I would love to try it again to see if it was the bottle of course which was not quite at top form!)
An absolutely magnificent showing of this wine. My fourth bottle of a case of six,and I think it is drinking at its very best now. No doubt will stay at this level for a number of years, but if you have any,you are very lucky indeed. Extraordinary

Bordeaux in Bern (Bern, Switzerland): Mmm, I love the aromatics here. Spicy and leafy with a hint of mint. The palate is austere in comparison to the 1989, but it shows beautiful notes of mineral and cherry. Aromatically this is wide open, but the palate still seems a bit closed. No hurry on this time, as I think another 5-10 years is required before this really opens up.

Deep ruby-garnet in he glass with a dusting of sediment, this wine is fully mature. Offering an uncomplicated nose of ripe plum & date with dark berry.
Fantastic mouth feel and long finish.
Unlikely to improve from here because the fruit is currently carrying the day. Drink up soon for maximum enjoyment.

Same flight with Trotanoy, Eglise Clinet, signature Angelus leathery, forest floor aroma. Very deep, intense but seductive. Tannin very fine, always a pleasure to drink.

Lovely and accessible, the 1995 Angélus shows off its pedigree and high percentage of Cabernet Franc with only minimal decanting. A slightly woodsy bouquet of black currants, plums, cedar, forest underbrush, spiced orange pomander, dried lavender and incense. On the palate, poised supple tannins and a fine acid backbone underpin steeped blackberry, crème de cassis, bay leaf, dried herbs and delicate minerality. This legendary Saint-Émilion dances in the glass, and ends triumphantly, in a grand jeté.

Celebrating new year with my father in law! Dark red in colour! Opaque! Nose of cedar woods, sweet fruits, a touch of vanilla oak, very well judged! Red fruits dominate the palate with spice, dried herbs! Long finish! Round and full! It will evolve for at least 15 years!

This bottle of 1995 Angelus is much more evolved than when I tried it a couple of years ago when it was quite clenched, and surprisingly so. Today it was much more open for business, and it has an enticing nose of soy, sweet cherries and black fruits. It is pretty seamless across the palate with a bit of heat on the back palate, but it doesn't have great length. Superficially sexy and seductive. I keep sipping this to try to get something on the mid, some nuance and complexity, but there is absolutely nothing there. Nothing going on. Nada. It is very one paced and uni-dimensional. This wine has little substance or complexity. Sure it is nice to drink, but it is only superficially attractive. But choose you cliche: the emperor has no clothes, when the tide goes out it reveals who has been swimming naked. On the second glass it is boring, and on the third it is quite frankly tedious. I have downgraded this wine because last time I tried it I thought it just needed a few more years it reveal its glories. I drank this head to head with Figeac 1995 which was by far and away the superior wine, but ironically was only a good rather than great Figeac. Based on this showing, and other encounters no way should Angelus by classified as Premier Grand Cru Classe "A". I am mystified why critics rate Angelus so highly.

boy oh boy is this a dense monster of a wine. Tons of textured dark fruit and olives but thick and structured and the flavors just bracket your palate. Really looking forward to where this wine is going to go.

Decanted for 2.5hrs. What a wine. Truly a special one. The nose is so powerful. Your senses are overloaded with ripe fruit. The taste has hint of butterscotch, saddle leather and blueberries. It goes on for a full min afterwards. Loved this wine.

Very youthful appearance with little brick. A bit of green pepper on the nose with fairly typical right bank features. Angular tannins that masked a good deal of the fruit that seems atypical for Angelus especially at this age. A little evolution through the night. Need more time?

Perfectly stored. Opened one hour before drinking. A good nose. Relatively simple but with great, pure fruit. Such a great wine in the mouth. Brilliant fruit. It will hopefully improve with time. At present, the aftertaste is slightly dry due to the tannin's. I rate it now 94 but it expect it to be 96 in a few years time.

Birthday dinner for..............ME!!!!!!! (Cafe Med): I popped this and poured a little tiny amount before dinner to make sure it was not tainted and I was blown away. I have had many Bordeaux wines and if memory serves me correct this is my first 100 pointer. I had this wine a year or two ago when I bought three bottles from a collectors cellar and it was great at the time but this bottle is just perfect right now. Smooth, concentrated, rich, balance. Damn, this wine hits it all perfect for me. Great bright fruits, tannins integrated, some slight secondary characteristics, nice long finish, slight dryness and perfect with a veal chop!! Can this wine gain some more character? Perhaps, but why wait!! I loved it !! I don't plan on waiting too long to open my last bottle. Lightning in a bottle? I dunno?? But hit it right for me.......
I thought this was a beautiful wine. Still fresh. Black fruit on the nose. Well balanced, black fruit and long taste. I am no judge of how long it will last but it's drinking well now Luckily only the last of the 4 bottles we had was slightly corked (not too bad but noticeable, except by those who probably had had enough)

A very well balanced wine, possibly at its peak but will stay here for a while. Integrated tannins, no stem, rounded on the palate. Medium length limits its score. This is a high accolade from a Burgundy fan. Two bottles.

Popped and poured. Deep garnet color. Powerful aromatics of black cherry, plum and currant. Chocolate notes, leather, and cedar as well with a hint of wet pipe tobacco. Quite giving on the palate with the same dark fruit coming through. The structure is there for additional aging, but the ripe fruit covers it up a bit; not really evident until the finish. Well balanced fruit, acidity and minerality with a lengthy finish. Delicious!

Very nice, rich almost sappy dark cherry, with great balance. No astringency or drying that I have seen in some 95's. long, perfect Bordeaux ripeness and wonderful mouth coating round mouth feel. Some leather, cedar to match the fruit

Best showing of this vintage Angelus ever. Much fatter, almost goopy black cherry fruit flowing into all corners of the palate by comparison to drier, tougher, leaners showings. One gets a real sense of substance and power here, of 1st growth caliber. There is also a blackberry component that emerges on the back end, as well as wet clay, sand, sage, mint and some waxy stem and skin component. The tannins are quite substantial and gripping still, and might be a bit too much for some drinkers. 2 points substracted from perfection for the fading in the decanter--rarely does Angelus show the best when first opened, and then recede or go to sleep within a few hours decant, as was the case here. Quite simply, the wine's gutsy, rock-star performance upon opening showed a little fatigue after screaming its lungs out on the stage for an hour. Kind of like a middle-age Scott Weiland in 2007-2009--mighty voice for 1 hour on stage, and then diminishment as the drugs and divorce and depressive aspects of his mania rise to the surface.
Spectacular. Dark. Does not look like most 18 year old wines. Great structure and balance. Also, elegant. Should last a long while. However, do not see how it can improve. Hence, no reason to let it lie. Enjoy it now. Was a big hit at a dinner party.

Sommelier 1995 Bordeaux Tasting - "Rich and savory with well integrated floral tones; cherries, soy, sage and iris; a great combination of sweet and sour fruits with a skin-driven finish, balanced earth tones and a powerful mouth-coating texture; Still youthful, but drinking like a champ!" - Scott Ota. All wines were opened and poured.
Other note: Beautiful on the nose, sweet oak and tannins. Leather, fruit and certainly could age more but thoroughly enjoyed.

I've been drinking lots of Burgundy these days so drinking this Bordeaux was a bit of a shock to the system.
At 18, this wine is still dark as night in color.
The nose offers up ripe black-cherry fruit, leather, herbs, and hints of animal.
The wine has velvety texture and is full-bodied. The flavors are deep and consistent with the nose.
This is a very solid wine if you like the style but I found the wines sameness from start to finish left me somewhat unexcited - esp. when current pricing is considered.
Eat big with this one! Paired with rib eyes and still a big boy.

Surprising dark color. A little musty when I first sniffed and tasted but after spending some time in the decanter it opened up beautifully. Fragrant with cherry liqueur, leather, and animal. I found the tannins to be well integrated and the palate copied the nose. Very fresh tasting with well defined fruit, good weight, balanced acidity and a satisfying finish. It has quite a bit of Cabernet Franc in the blend, giving it an herbaceous quality but always remaining vibrant. A beauty and we drank it with lamb shank and ribeyes.

Slow-O 6 hours, aerate in decanter 3 hours, served at cellar temp. Cork in exc cond, color still quite dark. It's been about 6-7 years since I last had this, and it seems it really hasn't moved that much. Rich, ripe and tasty. Quite the mid-palate experience, and a finish that curls your hair, for minutes. Sexy, opulent and engaging. Can wait to drink it again in a decade, or two. recommended, drink thru 2035

One of the finest wines I have ever had. Nose of dark fruit, tobacco, cassis and more. Dark purple to the rim with just a hint of aging at the rim. Good body and legs. Palate of dark chocolate, blood, meat, dark fruit, truffles with well integrated chewy tannins. Finish of chewy dark fruit of blackcherry and tart fruit. Needs to decant and open for a few hours after which it becomes silky and smooth. Lovely wine.

Bottle was in perfect condition with high neck fill. Opened and decanted for 1 hour, served at 65 F in Sommelier Riedel stems. Color was clear garnet with purple tint of medium intensity. Nose was clean and pronounced. Aroma characteristics were fruit, floral, spice and wood. Over the course of 2 hours drinking this bottle. I got and dark chocolate, raspberry, cherry, black currant, violet, cinnamon, resinous cedar, wet forest floor, and leather. Palate was dry. Acid was medium plus, tannins were smooth and silky of medium intensity. Alcohol was . Body full . Flavor intensity medium plus with many of the same elements I was getting from the nose. Balance was wonderful and the length was long. :40 sec. Outstanding wine with lots of finesse. Based on this experience I would say ready to drink but could age a bit more. Outstanding wine

I had a case of this, and used to love it, very impressive, rich and balanced. But the last 2 bottles are not ageing elegantly, the wine is beginning to taste of dark chocolate and heavy, ripe fruit. Interestingly at a blind tasting of 95s, everyone thought this was 'not Bordeaux' (Napa or even syrah). For my taste it's beginning to decline as the freshness is gone and it's now just heavy and a bit over-ripe. GIven the (stupid) price it commands today, I sold my last 3 bottles.

Decanted in my office 3 hours before lunch, and my first impression is one of richness, sweet and rich Bordeaux. At lunch, shows more black fruited than the red currant of the '95 Montelena Estate Cab alongside it on the table, with slight sweet Bordeaux funk. The tannins are soft, which is notable b/c my experience is that '95 Bordeaux tannins can still be firm, but then again, '95 was 17 years ago and this is a right bank, presumably Merlot-dominant wine. While there is a softness to the palate, it is defined and contained. Overall, whereas the '95 Montelena showed rich, slightly sweet fruit, this seems to have outpaced the initial gains of the Montelena and shows, in the final laps of the race, greater breed and class. Do I think this is a $200+ wine? No - few wines are. But this showed its class. Lunch with Laurent at Rothmann's, NYC.

Good clean and deep, all the scents become one beautiful smell. Mild cassis, subtle oak, licorice, fruits, earth, mineral, etc. Complex, well-balance, elegant but getting fuller and bigger with time. Delicioos, vibrant, linger, very deep, powerful and long finished.
The color starts with ruby/orange on the edge and becomes very dark color after 5-6 hours.
Good wine from great vintage is always elegant. This Angelus 1995 changes my point of view, feel like drinking Ausone or Cheval Blanc...
Super Bowl 2012 (Roswell, GA): Very rich and powerful nose containing both the funk of aged Bordeaux and the ripe fruits of almost Cali Cab. Many thought it could have been '94 Dominus. I could see that but the acid was too high and the nose definitely said Bordeaux. St. Emilion makes sense. Lots of sweet fruit that almost licorice and compote. Red & black currants were strong. Fresh yet fat and fleshy for Bordeaux. A good wrap of tannin on the finish. In a good drinking window and will continue to be for a very long time.

Alcohol :: 13.5% En magnum. Decanted for 60mins. Dark garnet core with light brownish hue. Wow, this is so fragrance! Highly perfume and expressive, the complex aromas soared from the glass gently but intensely with sweet plum, blackcurrant, leather, capsicum, green olive and touch of pain grille, mushroom and violet. Polished and subtle, with great mid palate depth and delineation that flowed through the palate with care. Gaining in depth and power toward the juicy long finish with massive, sweet tannin for fabulous grip along with the long lasting inner perfume for even better dimension. Everything is well integrated and perfectly balance. Stunning.

What can I say about this wine that has not already been said?
Well first of all it is snowing in the Alps and it is getting near Christmas and I found a restaurant in the Alps still selling this wine at a low price. I asked the owner and he said he was making money and he just wanted his clients to be happy. So Merry Christmas to me. In case there is a mad rush to get your hands on this wonderful offer I have to confess to drinking the last two bottles.
When first opened the wine is quite closed and needs at least two to three hours in the decanter to open up. But wow what a difference that time makes.
Notes of cassis, blueberries, tobacco, chocolate and spice with some earthy undertones. Colour is still quite vibrant with some slight bricking at the edges.
The taste is amazing smooth round full mouth with a wonderful length.
It is interesting to see how this wine is drinking with and without food. The tastes really come out more in the mouth with a little bit of food.
I really liked this wine and hats off to Angelus for producing such an amazing example that is still going strong.
It has life in it yet but I would start drinking your stocks now. If you have trouble drinking them all I am sure your friends will help you as mine did.

Deep, inky ruby. Throwing a bit of sediment. Tight and tannic out of the bottle (just a sip); two hours of decanting later, this is a big, brawny St. Emilion with a lot of fruit but still recognizable as Bordeaux. I didn't trust my nose last night, coming off a cold, so no comments on the nose. My palate was working fine, though. Thick, almost chewy, with emphasis on blueberry and chocolate (I've no idea how much Cab Franc is in here but it was prominent in the flavor profile). Some earthiness to it. Has the structure to age quite a while but it's drinking very well now. The decant is essential.

Good dark ruby color with slightly fading edges. Classic nose of ripe dark plums and cassis with hints of cigar box, graphite and eucalyptus. This needed a long time in the decanter to show itself. An austere style of Angelus that's medium-bodied with spicy black plum fruit and maturing notes of cigar smoke and graphite minerals. Finishes tight and a bit green. Although purchased on release and stored perfectly ever since, this just must be a slightly off bottle.

Drank during a long night of Angelus vintages (93/95/98/00/01), Pavie 98 and even Lafite 03 (so smooth, silky and approachable as if a top right bank Bordeaux - thanks Frits!). If we consider the Lafite as 'hors competition', this was regarded WOTN by most. Pure elegance, drinking even better than a few years ago. Pure and complete right bank wine; ripe, sexy. elegant and very beautiful layered complexity. Very dark purple color, nose tells that it hardly entered the second maturity phase, so keep some bottles for 2025 and even beyond. This is what Angelus makes a top wine!

STG Bordeaux (Eric's): more intensity in the 1995 when compared to the 1990 tasted alongside. This opened up in the glass and yielded a bold, intriguing palate.. THe mouthfeel was supple, and the fruit was nuanced beneath the rocky tannin. I would expect good things to come of further cellaring

This is a wine with a great velvety structure and strong muscles. Smooth, full-bodied and deep with still quite ferocius tannins. Very complex and with a great balance. It's way too young for my tastes and I think it will need at least 10-15 more years in cellar to achieve what it has the potential to. An extraordinary wine in the making.

This wine has matured nicely and while still on the younger side offers the aromatics of fine right bank Bordeaux. The wine had an interesting dairy note - like smelling fresh milk. In the mouth it had ripe tensioned fruit. The tannins are a little firm on the back end and I think that is more a vintage issue than an Angelus issue.

vanilla, coffee beans and black current nose almost masked its status as a reknown St-Emilion estate. This is developing into a great vintage for this wine that is on the smoky side. Seems like its just entering its prime drinking window which should last for many years.

Garnet with a vibrant ruby rim. Very expressive nose. Reminds me a real barnyard... Black fruits and minerals notes interchange in every sip. Totaly full-bodied, powerful and rich on the palate, with layers of currants and graphite. Also a hint of cedar. A perfection!!!

Amazing on every level possible. Still a very dark red violet color with an amazing nose that explodes with creme de cassis, tobacco, bitter chocolate and leather. The nose alone is so complex that you need to spend a good amount of time on it just to capture all of the little nuances. Flavors carry on that theme with wonderful fruit and earth wrapped in a luxurious velvety texture from start to finish. The finish is framed by tannins which are still showing some backbone to them which tells me that this wine, while absolutely fantastic today, still has the stuffing to last for a very long time. One of the all time top 5 wines I have had.

Decanted 4 hours. Outstanding bouquet of baked cherry pie and flowers (straight out of the bottle) that continued to unfold with aeration time. Smooth mouthfeel, med weight-long finish. A classic right banker hitting on all cylinders. (similar to previous notes) 95+

Very closed down at first and very reticent to open but after 2+ hours of decanting it started to show itself. Beautiful nose of graphite, bitter chocolate, black fruits and earth. Very elegant and refined and not showy at all today but a lovely subtle complexity is starting to emerge. A high-toned version of Angelus that has shut down some and would seem to need lots more. Wonderful flavors of black fruits, graphite and earthy tobacco. This is compact amd classy but in need of some more time. 92+

Decanted 7 hours prior to serving. I purchased a case based on many positive reviews here on the board. Very glad I did. This is a big full bodied wine that is just packed with dark fruit. Still rather primary on the palate but the nose is very expressive and floral. This will really be killer in another 10 years.

Fascinating nose with brown spices, herb/mint, dark fruit, cocoa. Elegant light palate, but with some licorice tannins and a slightly bitter finish. Starts restrained but opens over several hours and gains body. Still very young. Very good now with even more potential.

The nose offers blackberries, licorice and smoke along with a hint of saline. Concentrated with ripe fruit and tannins. This structured wine is hard style for Angelus. The tanninc spine does not allow the wines trademark velvet feel to come through. I'm not sure how this will eventually turn out, but at close to 15, it is unlikely the wines personality will improve.

An astonishingly fine wine, consumed now on four separate and very differently styled occasions, each time amazing all of those who drank it. Very rich on the nose, and velvety on the tongue, it is a wine to bring smiles and murmurs of absolute sensual pleasure. If you get the chance, try it.

ending the year in style (chicago, ward's apartment): nose: utterly gorgeous. tons of spice, mocha, leather, blueberry, and cedar. the nose is so dense and complex, but yet is so beautiful at the same time. I just couldn't stop smelling this nose, but yet I looked so forward to drinking it because of this utterly sublime nose
taste: coffee, blueberry, and tons of spice with slight earthyness and hints of leather poking through. This is pure integration on the palate and near flawless execution. When I drank this, all I could think of was listening to some of the great Miles Davis sextet albums. It's not Kind of BLue good, but round midnight or the 58 stella by starlight sessions good.
overall: this is pure elegance in a glass. Sublime and supple, this is what it's all about for me and it just puts me in a pure happy place as I drink it

"Bring your Best" Reno tasting (Mark and Megan's): Decanted 90 minutes. Dark violet red. Soaring nose of cassis, mocha, vanilla, leather and toasty flowers (if there is such a thing). Fruit-forward palate with in-control tannins and a light acidic touch to balance it out as balanced it was. This was a great bottle of wine.

Decanted 3 hours. Floral bouquet with hint of toast, leather and cocoa. On the palate - rich core of sweet dark fruit. The finish is smooth and long but is surprisingly strong (slightly tannic -but not rough) for such a smooth mouthfeel. Last sip was the best. 95+

Offline with Jonathan Dinh (Seattle, WA): Very volatile on the nose at first, but this integrated somewhat. Crushed blackberry. This is pretty wound up, big, primary, beastly tannins, some stalkiness. This is really firm and young yet awfully nice. As tight as this was initially, it actually shut down and tightened up as it had more air. This needs time to unwind.

The 1 mm rim with no wine streaks on the cork was a sign of a very good storage. Deep dark color with very slight briking on the rim. The bottle was opened for 2 hours prior to the dinner, and got better and better with air during the dinner. Dark fruit on the nose, concentrated cassis. The wine has all promises to last another 15 years. Drink now or enjoy later, this baby is ready and singing songs. How I lost weight and gained my libido

Wow, what a tremendous bottle this was - completely pristine (the cork and label even looked brand new), perfectly cellared. A wonderful, seductive perfume greets the nose - I could spend all night with my nose in the glass. The palate has tremendous, fat fruit on entry, lots of richness, and lovely minerality on the long, long finish. There is still a good amount of tannin present, but it creeps up on you and wraps your mouth in velvet. Seamless. This wine was very warm in character - not alcoholic warm, but warm like being wrapped in a thick blanket in front of a warm fire on a cold night. Decanted for 1 hour, but probably didn't need it, as it was singing right out of the bottle.

Opened our first bottle. Classic bordeaux lead pencil nose with rich fruit just leapt out of the glass. This wine warranted the score. It was lush, classic bordeaux dark fruit, lead pencil, coffee/chocolate, with solid, well-integrated tannins. We had with a Pintia, E&E Black Pepper and 1995 Pegau Cuvee Laurence...the Angelus was the wine of the night.

Drank over a 2-hour dinner. Decanted only an hour. Amazing nose of tar, black currants, and mushrooms. Taste was like a black cherry reduction sauce. This would pair amazingly well with a black cherry/mushroom sauced steak (morels?). As the night wore on, notes of Tobacco and Soy and some pencil lead. Finish is long--30 seconds plus. Amazingly well integrated wine. This is just coming into it drinking window. I'm not sure how much better it will get though given the clarity of fruit, I have no doubt it will age for years.

CT Group does 1995 Bordeaux w/ Blind Wine Mania @ Mike J: WOW! Inky dark in color. A deep, dark, brooding monster of a wine in need of some serious cellar time. Thick fruitcake, oak, and chocolate. Complex and concentrated with hefty tannins. The nose was a bit closed. Do not open another for a decade!

Minty nose, cedar, cigar and earthy aromas.
Excellent.

Tasting note:
Red berry, fresh strawberry, showing precision and linearity, herbs and spices in the mix along with just hints of aging notes. Fresh with pretty grippy tannin, clearly needs more time but I do see more potential, although the lack of harmony could come to haunt this.

Rust red color with some perfume, subtle raspberry and a lighter palate at the beginning - flavors evolve into cassis, saddle leather and fresh earthy notes.

A big wine but still elegant. Long and seamless. Good development over several hours, revealing some complexity. Very, very good. Could improve with some further cellaring but no harm in opening a bottle now.

Delicious!

En magnum. Stunning.

Drank in the Alps

Occasional tasting group: Just training our blind tasting skills. (@ PVa): Beautiful bouquet, enormously complex and elegant; cedar, barnyard, cassis, leather, herbs etc. On the palate the same explosion. If I really have to find something less positive; it could have been a little more full bodied. But no mistake about it; this is a textbook great Bordeaux.

Good strong ruby color. Lovely nose of graphite, tobacco, blackberries and all-spice. This beauty has reached middle-age and is just starting to show some wonderful complexities of secondary development. Full-bodied and rich for an Angelus with lovely flavors of cigar box, black fruits and smoky spices. A wonderful combination with roast duck.

French Bakery BYO 2000+prior Bordeaux Right Bank(Libournais) (French Bakery, Kane concourse, Bay Harbor Islands, Florida): Jerry's wine. Came in 3rd in the flight. A massive brooding, reticent wine that clearly needs another 10+ years. I used the Vintui aerator on it to get it possibly reveal itself. Good, but was outshone by its approachable sibling the 89, and the 99 Pavie.

ending the year in style (chicago, ward's apartment): nose: utterly gorgeous. tons of spice, mocha, leather, blueberry, and cedar. the nose is so dense and complex, but yet is so beautiful at the same time.
