Annual Caroling & Chili Party (R&D's): Magnum, double decanted off its sediment an hour before the event. Slight bricking. Mature red berry fruit, a touch plummy, with spice, white pepper and boysenberry tones. Picks up a subtle herbal element as it breathes. Balanced, with a nice finish. At peak in this format.

W veggie pasta. Sanne P visiting on 4th of July - fireworks in Pelham. This needs to be drunk. It is good and certainly after 30 mins of air but it is losing power. Fruit is getting to bricky and leaving. Still good length but you should drink up.

Not decanted. This is on the downhill slide, which surprised me a bit. Slightly prune-like edge to the nose, but it didn't show on the palate. Ripe dark fruits and some cedar. The oak actually still showed quite a bit. On day two, a glass showed some eucalyptus notes. Good, not amazing. Drink now.

Nice cork, no decant, but slow ox 30+ minutes in glass. Some plums and brambleberry on the nose - with maybe a dash of dill and anise. Rich palate with ripe plums and cherries and just enough structure to make this food friendly. Seems to be at or beyond peak - recommend drink up in 2021!

This was awesome, I thought it was past its prime. The tannins where mild, and the blend of Zin, Sarah, Carignan was perfect. This is my last one wish I had another dozen to savour.

74% Zinfandel, 21% Petite Sirah, and 5% Carignan. Medium bodied, sweet slightly raisoned red fruit. Good acidity providing a pleasant freshness, tannins still there. Herbs of rosemary and Thyme along with spice and pepper after the fruit. Persistent and complex. Drinking perfectly now, will last a few more years but suspect this is the high point.

Unbelievable (and once again - community drinking window insanely conservative - this had more legs). Paired w steak and it was lovely. No decant but used an aerating filter (lotta “stuff” in this bottle)

45 mins decant, 2/3 bottle consume on Day 1, 1/3 on Day 2. First 75 mins, wine was only ok - med body, fruit was hiding, decent complexity. Between 75mins to 120 mins, wine opened up and changed through this time. Finally the yummy dark fruit showed up, great acidity, lots of complexity (herbs, smoke, tar/tobacco). Compared to the 2009 version we had 2 years ago, this one seems to lack a little structure and umph (perhaps a little thinner). Which makes us think perhaps peak was 2 years ago?
Day 2 - Wine was recork and put in fridge from day before. Wine still needed about an hour to wake up. Still lots of complexity. Fruit is now more "prune". Still enjoyable

This was a real treat and changed its character throughout the evening.
Initially double decanted about 3 hours before drinking, the first glass had a touch of forest floor and the sweetness that I always associate with Zinfandel. But wait, this is a mere 74% Zin, and a couple of hours after the first glass it is hitting its stride with more tannic background / backbone and wonderful fresh, clean raspberry, sweet cherry and vanilla flavours. Truly memorable. After another hour I felt it became a little more muddled. Moral of the story? Drink now, and drink with a smile on your face. Superb!

Pulled for another ridge virtual tasting with surprise guest Carole Meredith discussing the history of Zin. Distinct notes of mocha and coffee on the finish. The elegance glides by leaving an alluring hint of dusty rose. Drink now or hold, but it’s a lovely wine. It blows the Pozo away. 74% Zinfandel, 21% Petite Sirah and 5% Carignane. Light coat of sediment coats the entire side of the bottle with some thickening at the shoulder and sediment dripping out in the final pour. 14.4% alc. With leftover London broil (beef). Recommended.

Espresso, cocoa powder, blackcurrant and blueberries on the nose. With air some black tea leaves can also be found. Juicy and dry at the same time, this wine changed more than I usually see in a LS from it was opened to 2 hours with air. Tasted side by side with the 08' Geyserville. This is a bit more grippy tannins, also has some oak/bark aroma with lots of bramble fruit on the nose. It has an exceptional long finish and overall balance.

Toast nose. Mid-red colour. Fruit nose with cranberry. Cranberry and dark fruit flavours. Needed an hour or so to open. Less advanced than the Geyersville at this stage.

Popped and poured. Medium garnet color. Nose of brambly red fruit, dill, baking spices, herbs. Oak definitely comes through loud and clear. Similar flavors on the palate with dried and slightly baked cherry and plum flavors, almost pie filling like but not in a sweet way. More of the American oak on the palate with a sweet and sour finish. Medium acid and tannin. Structure tells me to drink sooner rather than later if holding any.

RP: The 2008 Lytton Springs Proprietary Red, a blend of 74% Zinfandel, 21% Petite Sirah, and 5% Carignan, possesses a deep ruby/purple color and good acidity, and a more closed style than the Geyserville, with a firmer, more restrained overall personality. It should drink well for 7-8 years Zinnfandel, Petit Syrah, Carignan

Cranberry jam, red cherries, and tobacco on the nose. Solid core of red fruit and some cough drop in the mouth. Fresh and lively with a long earthy finish. What a great effort from Ridge! At peak now but will hold another 2-3 years at least.

Excellent! Opened about 30 min. before pouring; did not decant. The color remained a dark garnet. The nose and flavor profile included a lot of black fruit, some pepper, a hint of vanilla and "brambles". The finish was deep and lingering but very smooth. (per the label 74% zinfandel, 21% petite sirah and 5% carignan). Much better than the previous bottle.

Nicely evolved, very expressive and layered on the nose: floral, ripe red fruit, notes of spices and leather. More backward on the palate - bright with nice tannic grip, slightly spicy, wonderfully pure fruit. Very long. Delicious. 92-94

@ Tamarack game dinner with Catherine & Taylor and Bob T. Game dinner. Just a very good wine and good combo with the scottisch quail eggs, rabbit and venison. Great color, great nose of spice and red berry fruit. On palate, quite a bit of body. Good length. Contrary to previous note maybe keep one for 2023? Next to the 2006 which was a different wine. This was better but 06 was good as well

Aged color, good mature mid weight redfruit nose and on palate fun spice and fruit. Decent finish. Crowd loved it. Drink up though, as many others have said: LS used to age better, this is now a ten year wine!

Dark red color plus. PNP, drank 2 glasses over 90 minutes. My original note on this wine was in '11, and not surprisingly it has come a long way. I was struck by just how balanced it was as it really drank with a seamlessness. Sweet black cherry fruit on the nose, very pretty, layers of spice and dried herbs. The palate is medium bodied, a really nice mix of red and black fruits, dried herbs and there's a litttle astringency to the fruit on the finish.

Quick taste with pizza. Very characteristic where the high alcohol is buffered by the rich ripe dark fruit that is balanced with acidity and tannins that are starting to resolve. Oak is obvious but not overwhelming. All in all another solid vintage for this wine.

Aromas of rain, berries. Ripe raspberries up front. It seems fairly primary and one dimensional at first, but menthol and subtle American oak build into a lingering finish. Not as good as the Lytton Springs of the 1990's, but it's a good Zinfandel blend nonetheless. In the drinking window, though maybe not yet at peak.

Nice medium to light garnet coloring when poured. The initial aroma provided a spellbinding collection of black fruits, a bit of pepper and a hint of vanilla. With a little breathing, a balanced palate of plum, blackberry, a bit of peppery spiciness and a very smooth wine. The finish seemed light for a zin / petite sirah blend, hence the lower score. In its prime!! (handled the smoke from ribs off the grill with aplomb!)

With apologies to Tom Wolfe, “Houston, we have claret.” Incredibly smooth, velvety and elegant wine that delivers plum, brown sugar, rhubarb, Draper perfume and black fruits. Distinct notes of mocha and coffee on the finish. The elegance glides by leaving an alluring hint of dusty rose. Drink now. Maybe not as bright as the Paso Robles, but every bit as enjoyable. 74% Zinfandel, 21% Petite Sirah and 5% Carignane. Light coat of sediment coats the entire side of the bottle with some thickening at the shoulder and sediment dripping out in the final pour. 14.4% alc. In a good drinking window now, this big, layered Lytton delivers a delicious, but well integrated punch although the tannin is a little rustic ( will that further integrated over time). Flavors of black fruit, garrique, vanilla, spice. Medium to long finish.

After trying this wine 5 years later, I can say that it holds its finesse but lost its "yummyness" and menthol touches found in 2012, however, still holds its Zinfandel backbone in the mouth. This is a good example when "ageing" not necessarily means better, however, I still love this wine. buying more.

I am probably being generous with my rating because my like for this wine over the years. None of my bottles have been up to the professional ratings.....nor most of the posted tasting reviews on cellartracker.com. My 6 bottles were purchased from a Florida wine store.....that might be the issue. Shipping and storage can be a problem with Florida wine shops.

Nice berry flavor and aroma without being too 'jammy' in character. Higher alcohol content and smooth tannins with slightly spicy flavors. Aromas of berry, raspberry, spice and pepper. Flavors of raspberry, dark berry, spices and black pepper. Medium body with tremendous "legs" and nice long finish. Perfect now so drink up in my opinion.

This was the last 2008 in our cellar. We brought it to an Italian restaurant. Popped the cork and really didn't let it breathe. It was truly magnificent. Perfectly balanced fruit and spice. As it loosened up it only got better. We poured a glass for the chef and he loved it. I would say if you have any 2008 Lytton Springs, consider drinking it now. Its perfect.

This bottle tells me that the last bottle was flawed. This was a pop and pour. Initial funk blew off within two-three minutes. Developed a nice dark berry note with some licorice and spice. Velvety mouth-feel with a medium finish. No noticeable oak and tannins well integrated. In a really good spot right now.

Highly pleasurable, fully mature. Let me say that I don't drink many Ridge wines; I don't drink may young red wines in general, I prefer varying degrees of bottle rest. That said, I have several cases of Monte Bello, (1995-2014), but I don't drink them as I find I like Ridge wines with some age on them, i.e. they're not ready yet, for my palate. And now we come to last night, and this wine, with grilled, marinated flank steak, crispy brussel sprouts and a tomato salad (with basil, this wine liked the basil), this wine, that I'd had in the cellar for a little over 4 years, and the only bottle of zinfandel I own, showed me what it had, and I liked it. A lot. It's not an easy thing, I don't think, to balance, so finely, the aspects of soil, vanilla, dill and red fruits, such that each one has a say, none is lost in the equation, and in an age where things can so very easy get lost (to over-ripeness, oak, etc.), I think it's saying a lot. Full-bodied, but fresh and adequately lifted, too; I appreciated the fine balance of the Petite Sirah - it was an accent to the Zin component, again, neither overwhelming, each able to tell their own story. Total respect for this wine and what they have done and continue to do at Ridge, America's first growth, for me, anyway. 14,4%, (resolved), drink thru 2019, though I'm not sure it's going to get better than this, just different. highly recommended
PnP, served non-blind; half the bottle is on the counter and I'll update tonight if there's change worth mentioning.

The syrah adds some strong backbone and tannin, somewhat dwarfing the typical Lytton zin flavors but a overall a good experience with a wine that needs another two years to come completely together.

This is (as usual) a fabulous wine. Better than the 2001's and 2007's, which were both outstanding. In a perfect place right now, in early 2016. Several guests, uninitiated to Zin blends, were wowed by this wine and wanted to know more about it, where to buy, etc. Popped and poured.

Pop and pour and drank over two days. The mouth feel is super and silky and light yet the payload is huge flavored of dark fruit and spice. This one is in a good spot right now and I don't see how it will get any better but it's not declining anytime soon either. This a good after dinner wine based on its big flavor but I'm not sure I would eat a meal with it.

In Jakarta, and w my government friend paying a ridiculous price for this American drop.
Dark. Cold on the P&P. Deep waft of dark ripe fruit. Cant tell its a Zin for sure. Smokey, Oaky in the background. That rich, expesive feel of Ridge, glycerin, bramble, dry weeds, some dried sweet smoky grapes on the palate, herby, green? The finish still has some rustic tannins, then that sweet Zin character comes through on the finish. Nice effort.

My Grade: EX. Over a year later and this Big Zin is back on song and firing on all cylinders. I couldn't be more happy. Nose of candied raspberries, all-spice and black pepper. Legally this is not a Zinfandel. At 74% Zin, it's a point short of qualifying for labeling as such. Of course, Ridge has long treated Lytton Springs as a proprietary blend. In any case, it's also got 21% Petite Sirah and 5% Carignane.
Although the alcohol is higher than I'd prefer at 14.4%, it's not overly hot. To the contrary, it's got ripe dark fruit by the ton. Black cherry, blackberry, and plum. Enlivened with spice and black pepper.
The tannins are firm, suggesting potential for more extended aging than is the case with most Zinfandels. At the same time, however, it is drinking pretty well already.

A significant (and remarkable) improvement from the previous bottle tasted in 2011. 20+% Petite Sirah provides an impressive backbone to the wine and requires patience with it (i.e., several years of cellaring are optimal). This is a great example of what few years of cellaring do to a good bottle. Upon opening, beautiful nose and lots of pleasant, albeit somewhat raw, cedar. Decanting improved the wine further. After 1.5-2.0 hours of decanting, the hollow mid-palate filled in and became full and expansive; cedar notes became more balanced, with soulful sweetness on the palate (without being cloy). Delicious wine. Wish I had more left in the cellar.

Showing so much better than a previous bottle I had in 2010. The extra bit of age made a difference. This is better on the 2nd day; there is more weight and balance and the fruit is more complex. There is so much going on here; very satisfying, especially with the right food.

Bought this at the winery at an ATP First Friday event back in 2010. At the time I noted that it had really good fruit and tannins. Now, with a small amount of age, it has that, plus an insanely enjoyable silkiness. On opening, this was just fun. Nice fruit, good acidity, really tasty tannins, and that awesome silkiness.
It didn't really hold up on Day 2 or Day 3, but I can't complain that much. Day 1 was very very good.

Bright purple in color. 14.4% ABV. Black fruits, pepper and currants on the nose. Great structure and perfectly balanced. Medium body, claret styled Zinfandel blend. The palate shows blackberries, cherries, plums and spice. Soft tannins and surprisingly approachable. Drink over the next 2-4 years.
Decanted for two hours, reticent nose, light to mid-weight with bright fruit and thankfully low acidity because tannins were nearly non-existent. Decent, but needs food.

Grade: VG-. Once the undisputed King of Zin, capable of holding its own against some of the greatest cuvees in the world, Lytton Springs has lost some of its Bling and Swagger from the 90s. Nose is pretty closed with some red fruit notes, cloves, black pepper, forest floor and some Broccoli-water funk. On the pal: soft cherries and plums, thinning mid-palate with some pepper and all-spice, some minerality, light tannins, short, dry, sour cherry finish. Tasted alongside the 2006 Rutini Cab/Malbec blend, it really paled in comparison. I *hope* this is in a dumb stage as I have 4 bottles left.
My Grades: EXX=Exceptional, EX=Excellent, VG=Very Good, G=Good, O=Ordinary, P=Poor, U=Ungraded
Not all that tannic, but it was very closed. Pleasant enough, but everything was somewhat muted. I had a similar experience with an '07 about a year ago, but another bottle in the past few weeks was terrific. Evidently, the '07 was in a dumb phase about a year ago, so I'm hoping that's the case now with this '08. With Paul Draper's lengthy track record, along with the Lytton Spring's history of ageability, I think/hope this will come around by this time next year.

From the 1.5. Great Zin all the way around. Blend is classic Ridge. FOld field Italian blends, with that signature silky glycerin mouthfeel. The PS adds the depth and seriousness to move it away from the candided Zons out there. Day III and nose is still holding, the body & depth coming together. This is great right off the P&P and till day III. Great wine making.

A great summer grill wine. Pepper notes, great fruit, clean finish. The only bad part of this bottle is that too many people like it too much and they drink it, leaving less for me! Won the coveted 'first bottle empty' award at a July 4 gathering. This is drinking really well now, has the balance to age but unlikely I will be able to control myself on the rest of these. Delicious, not profound.

I usually love the Lytton Springs but this was just mediocre for me. I could really taste the petit Syrah which to me overwhelmed the Zinfandel. I started the night out with this and I don't like jammy zins which is why I picked this but just not my style. The petit Syrah was not as well integrated as I would have expected and overwhelmed any other varietal.

At a tasting with Paul Draper in Bergen, Norway. He says this wine is the masculine one in the comparison with Geyserville. Really spiky tannins here. This is youthful! A lot of concentration and power. Paul Draper calls this one structured and earthly compared to the light feminin elegance of the Geyserville. Hints of cabernet on the nose. Not really my favorite wine this evening. Too much tannins.

35th Annual Zinfandel Retrospective - the 2008s (Rich & Dana's): Deep crimson color. Notes of spice, red fruit, black fruit, perfumed florals and baking spices- cinnamon and nutmeg. Full-bodied with sweet tannin and flavors of raspberry and cherry turning to dark fruit as the wine breathes.

From 375ml. Light meniscus, garnet core. Aromas of florals, red fruit, boysenberry, raspberry and cherry. Balanced, with lovely red fruit- cherry & raspberry, followed later on by leather, plum and ripe dark fruit qualities. Develops a nice floral overtone. 91-92 pts.

Ripe, dark fruit drinking beautifully at the moment. Not sure what it would offer 5-7 years down the road so drink up now. The Petite Syrah and Carignane add a certain rustic depth and dusty earthiness to the wine so it becomes less of a full throttle Zinfandel and more of a family blend made by your uncles Paul Draper and John Olney in their farmhouse cellar.
Good, but a big step down from the bottle I had previously. Unless this is just an off bottle, it is closing down and will probably take a few years to come back into form.

The wine is a deep, dark ruby color. The very appealing nose has brambly berries, minerals, black pepper, Asian spices, cherries, vanilla, potpourri, and some earthy underbrush. This has a medium body, fairly solid tannins, and very good acidity. On the palate the wine shows great balance with no rough edges or overly showy elements. The finish has very nice length but seems to be a touch clipped when the tannins and acidity kick in. I think this will improve with another year or two in the cellar but it is enjoyable today with some air.

This wine was a pleasant surprise, exceeded our expectations. 74% Zin, according to label. Color was inky, no doubt due to 21% Petite Sirah. STRONG nose of dark cherry and other dark fruit. Taste is of robust berry, currant, wood, touch of leather. This wine is AT PEAK., drinking superbly, with good balance of acidity and integrated although present tannins. Better than medium finish. This wine is IDEAL for grilled meat or poultry. Reading the Ridge label, we can tell these folks put their heart and soul into making each wine. This full-bodied, yet elegant Dry Creek Zin was great on QPR, one of best Zin/Zin-based wines we have had for some time.

I was worried that this would be in its mid-life shut down and for sure it isn't showing everything it's got. However, upon opening it immediately delivers a pronounced nose of sweet oak, spices, strawberry and that hint of V.A. The palate shows warm summer fruits, a firm tannic backbone and an edge of acidity that leaves an impression of vitality and freshness. With time, elements of violet and blueberry come to the fore. The finish shows where this wine is going: lovely balance, undertones of cured meat, classy american oak and searingly bright blueberry pie flavours all show great promise for this wine.

From Magnum: This is already drinking really nice...there's a slight creaminess to the texture and just enough sugar from the fruit and acidity to drink well on its own or pair with food. Medium bodied and balanced, this really delivered at an italian restaurant with 10 guests. Everyone was happy.

- Garnet color with fast forming legs. It's balanced with a medium/full body. Satin-Like texture with a long finish - This wine really honor the words balance and silky tannins, medium-full body with a solid finish , not very expressive to the nose, however, hints of fruits and menthol can be found after a couple of hours. This wine really shows its elegance on the palate with very round silky tannins and semi-long finish, I would buy more no doubt. Excellent wine to pair with meat and pastas but not too strong meats ( use a Cab or .

The nose is a bit subdued, but still packed with rich brambly dark fruit, leather, and dusty cellar. The palate is decidedly more expressive, showing goregous authentic mixed berries and savory spices. The mid-palate is focused by tart raspberry and elements of bramble/rich earth. The wine finishes long with a firm tannic structure framing notes of sweet cassis, dried green herbs, and game. The wine carries a medium-full body with fantastic balance and structure. This is drinking well now, but really opened up after several hours. This will age well. R&M 90

One hour decant. Great complement to a burger, Pepper bramble and dark fruit on the nose, black cherry, spices, more pepper on the palate, clean finish. Drinking very well now, not clear how much more upside might emerge with age, but still has some time left.

Dark ruby red colour. Intensive, ripe and clean nose. Red berries with some darker tones. The palate is quite rich and round. You can feel the alcohol clearly but it's not too much. Tannins are quite friendly and there's good acidity here. In the aftertaste the roundness gives way to acidic structure which carries the wine nicely. Despite this there's also rich red berries here as well. This wine is ok right now but it lacks the wow factor. Couple of years in the cellar maybe...?

From a 375 @ Zov's, Newport Beach, consumed at room temp more or less.
Nose a bit sleepy, but I was able to coax some cherry, bramble, and a hint of liquor/fragrance. Palate shows pretty well ripe and round red and dark fruits. Some acid, but nowhere near what I remember from the 09. Tannins have some activity on the back end, but not much. Shortish finish.
If you have a split I'd drink in 2012. A competent wine but perhaps just shy of outstanding. 88-89 points for this tasting, but I'm going to hold back a rating due to possible storage issues/ serving temp at restaurant.

Rich, ripe, soft rendition of the Lytton Springs, but it was missing the signature acidity and freshness that make Ridge zins stand apart. Went just fine with burgers among friends, but I was hoping for a little more.

Soft all around. Soft nose. Soft in the mouth. Soft finish. Pleasant enough, but no stuffing and no edge. Not worth the price. I've really liked this in previous vintages and haven't had it in years. It was gifted to me recently and I was interested in giving it a try.

Zin and Burgers (Slater's 50/50, Anaheim, CA): Reserved nose that has some dusty, rustic notes. Bright, fresh fruit that is also somewhat fat. Nice structure and depth. Saved a glass over night where it showed somewhat round fruit in the midpalate. A good wine but probably not one of the best of the recent Ridge Lyttons.

This wine seemed to have deepened since my last bottle. Black Cherry, plum, and a sweet spice tanninc finish made this an enjoyable experience. The flavors seem to linger longer and leave a better impression this time around, but perhaps I was just having a better night.

Decanted 2 hrs. ahead, and it still seems closed. Shy nose of mint, vanilla, some black cherries. Well-balanced on the palate with a very nice structure of acids and good plum flavors but could be deeper. Finishes with oak and light dusty tannins. The austerity of this wine speaks of high aspirations, but the shyness of the nose and the withheld flavors work against it. Two hours of air should be enough for this wine to open, so maybe it's in a dumb phase right now.

Classic Ridge Lytton Springs, plenty of black berry fruit and spice, but not the slap you in the face kind, a bit more restrained without ever getting too sweet or hot. Nice balance. Could see it drink nicely for a decade + , as the "95 is absolutely lovely right now ****

Opened and poured thru a vinturi. My first impression was that this is a remarkably well balanced, not overly fruit fruit forward or overheated Zinfandel. The dark berry fruit was there, but was subtle and slowly began to emerge as we moved thru the bottle. It had soft spices, light pepper, blood orange citrus, cola, and layers of semi-ripe blue, red and blackberry fruits. Moderate tannins. This was a mouthful of wine. It was noteworthy how restrained and sophisticated this wine seemed.

Jammy blackberry cobbler with bread dough and baking spices on the nose. In the mouth, the black fruit - less jammy on day two. Mid palate picks up some tanins and stems with some red fruit added in. Good solid finish with lingering tanins. Very solid, not a hit head with hammer zin.

On the nose, I found blackberry, sweet spice, whiffs of vanilla cream soda and powdered sugar. On the palate, it was rich yet balanced with juicy blackberry jam and nice structure. The finish is long as the fruit lingers on the palate for half a minute.
I found myself on the ledge o scoring this 89 or 90, but in the end, I went with the former, because as good as this is, I felt it needed a little more complexity to break 90 points.

Visting Ridge Vineyards: Tasted at the winery. Deep purple color. Expressive blackberry and cassis on the nose, with notes of coconut and dill. Loads of rich, sweet, brambly black fruit, with a creamy texture and plenty of oak and structure. With air the acid shows more and a certain brightness/tartness to the fruit comes out, with a slightly more reddish character, and the tannin becomes more noticeable. There's just a touch of heat on the back end, and a long, fruit finish. This is a big, dense, wine and while it's really good (I liked it better than the 07 I've had before), I'd bet it will be better in 10 years.

Another amazing Ridge offerring, just a touch better than the similar vintage 'Geyserville' bottling we had alongside, thinking the extra PS in this one gives it a bit more 'umpf', this was another excellent example of what this winery can do - Dark red, full bodied with a nose of blackfruit, spice, bramble, plum, cherry and mild oak, well made, quite integrated already, interesting, sweet, smooth on the palate with excellent length, awesome (93 Points).

Lytton, masculine, more petite. Geyserville, feminine, more carignane. Liquorice aromas. Again, this is day 5. Palate show structure for aging. Nice tannin, concentrated fruit, a deep fruit, not completely expressive beyond the darkness. Spice in the nose as well as some blue fruited-ness. Blackberry, boysenberry. Great wine at $35.

Had the chance to do a tasting at the winery this summer. Aside from the Monte Bello, I thought this was the most impressive offering that day, so I brought some home with me. Really nice structure here. Typical ripe, dark fruits, vanillan from the American oak, a spicy finish, and a minerality that only comes from Dry Creek old vines. BTW, the difference between their Old Vine Zins and their "not so old" vine Zins was staggering and surprising to me. It was an amazing revelation.

A really easy drinking wine. Supple dark fruit mixes with fairly soft red berries. There's a zingy oak component on the midpalate and a little spiciness on the finish. Softer and more ready to drink than I expected. I agree with another reviewer that the finish is a bit short.

Almost opaque dark purple with a lighter rim. Youthful, oak inspired aromas of red rock candy, vanilla, cassis, potpourri and cedary spice. Rich dark berries on the palate but narrows quickly towards the back, ending with tannins taking over the finish. Big tannins but not aggressive. Hedonistically good. I'm sure this will age nicely but the short finish is a bit concerning. Most likely just an after effect of the youthful tannins. Nice structure. Very claret-like. This bottling is starting to go down the path of Geyserville in that you would be hard pressed to guess it simply as "Zinfandel."

Ridge Tasting: Current Releases (Wine Co., St. Paul, MN): Dark red purple color. Blend of 74% Zin, 21% Petite Sirah, 5% Carignane. This wine is very herbal on the nose, mixing in lots of pepper, spice, licorice, and dark fruit. The palate shows dark fruit and has more acid, more tannin, more spice than the "08 Geyserville. Medium finish. While this is very good, I found it too much to the herbal side and I preferred the Geyserville significantly over this.

Glossy ruby red. Vibrant, quite perfumed nose with blackcurrant, strawberry and herb aromas. Fresh and lively on the palate with full flavours in a style very similar to the southern rhone; great intensity and structure with iron-rich spicy black fruit and a earthy garrigue note. Although intense there is still a lovely balance and weight to the wine. Very good.

Nose is bursting with blueberries and blackberries, mixed with leather and green herbs. I am amazed by the overall balance between the fruit and tannins at such a young age. Notes of blackberry, flowers on the nose. This is plush, and ripe, and fiercely, piercingly tannic, with a long finish, showing plenty of baby fat, layers of blackberry and black cherry compote. Fat, focused, fit to age, but a fine match now for steak.

Tasted as part of a Sampler tasting. Extreme blueberry and black currant fragrance with a balancing hint of spice. By comparison the palate was disappointing - mostly consisting of unrefined tannin giving way to the oak influence. However a little spicyness did ultimately develop.

C: transparent purple, low color density N: currant, eucalyptus, mint. P: somewhat restrained at first, opening with air, but the palatte matches the color here and this isn't a jammy, juicy, overripe zin by any stretch. Nice rasin and currant flavors at the front with plenty of bright acidity to keep things tasting fresh. A bit of a drop on the mid palate, and alcohol showing on the finish, but also some nice minerality and cola notes.

From 3L. Didn't intend to pay much attention to this since it was my birthday party and I was making the rounds all night. Couple that with the fact that a 3L bottle can make for a long night, and this was one interesting experience. This is bold stuff. No specific notes, but to say that this was delicious. Would love to get into this in 10 years. Probably won't open another bottle for at least that long.

Way early to open this one, and it shows. The fruit is way up front, battling for attention with the oak, in a pretty hedonistic package. All the usual LS parts are there, though maybe a bit soft and lacking in acidity. Maybe not built to go as far out as the '07, but should be pleasing in the nearer term.

Superb!

Great color, great nose of spice and red berry fruit. On palate, quite a bit of body. Good length. Contrary to previous note maybe keep one for 2023? Next to the 2006 which was a different wine.

14.4% alc.

The finish still has some rustic tannins, then that sweet Zin character comes through on the finish. Nice effort.

Evidently, the '07 was in a dumb phase about a year ago, so I'm hoping that's the case now with this '08. With Paul Draper's lengthy track record, along with the Lytton Spring's history of ageability, I think/hope this will come around by this time next year.

The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like blueberry, prune, coffee and black pepper. It tastes like blueberry and chocolate. The body is medium. The wine finishes short. The wine has medium acidity.

Deep ruby red color with rich and intense flavors of ripe raspberry, cherry and plum with a medium body that's juicy yet exhibits bright acidity and smokiness on the long and spicy finish. This is drinking well now. It's very approachable, and would be ideal for grilled food in the outdoors. Drink now until 2018. 91+

Despite this there's also rich red berries here as well. This wine is ok right now but it lacks the wow factor. Couple of years in the cellar maybe...?

The austerity of this wine speaks of high aspirations, but the shyness of the nose and the withheld flavors work against it.

Tasted at the winery. Dark fruit, floral nose. Balanced like the rest of the lineup but missing some of the complexity with red fruit and a hint of spice. Still well-made when compared to the competition in this price range.

Tasting notes almost identical to last time with perhaps a bit more red-fruitedness and a minty component. This is the kind of Zin I like - some earthiness, some herbs, and nice acidity.

The finish is dry and with a good length. It will probably improve and develop from cellaring, but I have absolutely no problem enjoying this wine now.

K&L Ridge Tasting (San Francisco): A bit smoky and meaty. Palate has spices, black fruit, a strong tannic finish. Needs 5-7 years minimum. Excellent, and a different style than the Geyserville (richer, more fruits instead of the Geyserville's minerality). Lovely. 92+

Deep royal purple; Nose is nicely (and not overdone) dark berry jam with vanilla and white pepper. Well-balanced acid with modest tannin, quite full-bodied but not too hot. Finish is medium.
