This was my note from 2017 and it pefectly reflects how u I felt drinking it at the Luton Hoo Hotel 7 years later.
Decanted for 1.5 hours and drank over a 5-course dinner at the Connaught in London. Best showing yet. An absolutely fabulous nose, one of the most intoxicating I have ever experienced. Lovely on the palate as well with all the classic Mouton characteristics. The finish though was a bit disappointing, perhaps reflecting the vintage.

Opened to breathe, decanted at Christopher's in SLC. Great bdx nose, cigar box, earthy tobacco. On the palate, medium bodied smooth and complex. Very dry fruit with forest floor earthiness and clean acidity in the finish. Intellectually stimulating but not delicious. 92/93

Beautiful nose of ripe strawberries, cigar box, tobacco leaves…. Drying tannins present, red ripe fruit, the nose is 10x better than the taste at this stage!! Can keep 5 or 10 more years to be perfectly mature!

Second bottle of this in a month, and this one, slightly better than the last. Prominent flavors of tar and tertiary funk, both of which I like. In a great drinking spot.

Maybe this isn't the greatest of vintages, but at 25, this Mouton performed at a high level. Heavy flavors of charcoal, graphite, moist soil. A bit more fruit would have improved/rounded the wine's profile. It has not turned tertiary. Drank well upon opening but has the structure to benefit from hours of air. Easily has another 10 years in a peak window, so no need to rush consumption.

Un autre millésime qui se présente sur du fruit bien mure, un peu fermé avec une certaine astringence autant au nez qu'en bouche. c'est jeune mais tout de même accessible. Correct sans plus, encore une fois ca manque de dimension.

Classic Pauillac. In a plateau stage IMO. Agree with some of the recent reviews that it is on the lean side. Not exciting but good drinking. Drink sooner rather than later. Improved over the night and gained weight with air.

Bloody ruby, dense, a touch of brick to the rim. Dense attack, saline silty frame, some mulch and (cardboard), developed fruit. Builds some gorgeous plump fruit – raspberry! black olive, cassis in time, and mint. On return, liquorice and fig.
Palate a little pinched at first, and spicy (positive), fine grainy, resolved tannin. Sort of open and loose… elegant and mature. Super supple core. Medium-bodied but has follow-through too. Fine, long, perfumed notes of graphite. Very enjoyable, balanced.

Been saving this one for a long time and uncorked it for my 25th wedding anniversary at Bazaar in DC. Worth. The. Wait. Cork came right out, and we decanted for about 20 minutes before drinking. Classic Pauillac nose of cigar box and cedar, black fruit, some red fruit, vanilla, a bit of soy, licorice and earthy spice. Healthy ruby color with slight bricking at the edge. Tannins are extremely well integrated and yet the fruit is still fresh. Powerful, yet light. The finish goes on and on, almost a minute. A great wine. Drink now or in the next couple years.

Pronounced nose intensity with pencil lead, graphite, blackcurrant, spices, toast, oak, vanilla, chocolate. Medium+ acidity and medium+ tannin. Tannin is soft. Pronounced nose intensity and long finish. Medium alcohol and dry. Currently in its optimal drinking window, will develop more secondary and tertiary notes as it age. Decant for 1 hour. This wine will last easily 10 years or more with good storage condition.

But this wine is not about art, at least not to me. Art is when craft gives life and this wine is just good craft.
It opens with a yielding nose of cassis and lead pencil. It’s very much on the sweet side. The same character follows in taste. It is amazing to have so much fruit at this age, but there is little structure to hold it up. Almost jammy if it weren’t for some tannin remaining. The sweet cassis is lovely but for me, it either needs a food pairing or it will feel somewhat flat. Duck and quail were perfect pairings.
Full disclosure: my three tasting companions did not detect the sweetness and they mentioned healthy acidity. I did not experience any acidity.
They agreed with me that wine lacks the weight and the depth of some bigger Moutons.
Now is a great time to drink it.

So much better then when i last tasted this almost 10 years ago . Still deep ruby, but a very interesting nose of blueberry, peppermint, soil, and layers of other cassis and spice notes. Palate is medium bodied and resolved with nice length and balance. Not the biggest of Mouton’s but clearly very ready to drink and can’t see it getting much better. Enjoyed slowly over the evening with PW and splash decanted and opened up well in the glass. This is now a very approachable Mouton and showing some great château characteristics without having to wait for some of the “greater” years like 1996, 2000 and 2005 to come around! Enjoy it now it you have the chance!

Opened for my 25th at Fig Tree Charlotte with parents and girlfriend, decanted and drank over course of dinner with a 2019 Joseph Phelps cab to start things off while this opened up. Softer around the edges than the 2002 we had last summer, but not in a bad way. Tannins had beautifully integrated, still a shocking amount of fruit for a 25 year old bottle. Nose was still explosive with pencil lead, truffle/forest floor, a small bit of red fruit left over. Finish lasted for a minute+. An absolutely excellent bottle with excellent company.

Spring Break Mini-Mondo Tasting (Deerfield Beach, FL): Flight #3 - single blind vs. '98 L'Evangile. Of the five wines served tonight, this actually ranked 5th. That said, it is still a very well made wine. In its current state, this Mouton is wound tight and somewhat leaner that I had hoped. I cannot tell if this is from the lesser '98 vintage on the left bank or that it is still tightly coiled and needs more time in the bottle. Nevertheless, it is always a treat to drink Mouton even if it is not performing at its best.

Mouton dinner (La Chaumiere in Georgetown): Expressive nose displaying blue and black fruit, crème de cassis, blueberry, ink, strong eucalyptus, a hint of mint, tobacco, cedar and earth. Very good concentration, cool black and blue fruit, bright acidity, strong earthy mineral, slightly dry tannins and a medium to long blue and black fruit driven finish with eucalyptus and mint at the end. This seems a bit hollow and lean, and also more developed than the 96.

Pulled the cork and let it breathe in bottle. Might have done a little better with a decant. I got a lot of pen ink, blackberry and blackcurrant fruit here. A hint of VA, pretty narrow dark spectrum of fruit here. This was highly reminiscent of the LLC of the same vintage, but the Mouton is as yet more youthful. If kept quite cool, this wine should rest another 5 years before a check in…

I decanted 30 minutes after opening bottle two hours prior ... perfect. Aging beautifully. The tannins have really smoothed out. Good bottle bouquet. Still dark color. Earth, dark fruit and dark chocolate. Looking forward to drinking more of this great Mouton.

Decanted for three hours and it needed it to open up. Very good with that earthy Mouton beetroot tone, cherry, and anise. Smooth and balanced, just a bit on the light bodied side. This may get smoother but it won’t gain fruit. A solid 94. Drink now - 2030.

Opened and slow-oxed for an hour or two before dinner; perhaps an hour in a decanter might help, but it was more fun to watch it open. By the end of dinner, the nose was stunning. With the tannins fairly resolved, this is in a very good place.

I made the mistake of not decanting this Mouton before hand. After it was opened and decanted it clenched up, and took a while to settle down. What you have here is a classical Mouton attack of saddle leather, soy, leaf, berries, woodsmoke, and various other delights, which leads on to a wine with quite a lean mid palate and only an average length on the finish. But there is a lot going on here and it evolves and improves as the tannins meld in, lending the wine a regal quality and a sense of gravitas after an hour or two. The 1998 vintage was difficult on the left bank with a biblical deluge towards the end of the growing season and in that context this wine is a good effort. However, it is not on a par with Lafite, the only wine in the Medoc which competes with the best of the right bank and Graves in 1998. At the same time, the vintage shortcomings attenuate the ‘classical’ nature of this Mouton, which you would not see to the same extent yet in denser vintages like 1995 or 1996

This is definitely approachable and enjoyable now. Decanted for 2 hours and consumed over 3. It was open for business upon the cork pull, but it did improve and gave a nice sweet and complex Mouton experience with a lovely nose featuring mint, saddle leather, tobacco, and some eucalyptus notes intertwined with the fine cassis and dark fruit characteristics. You could age this for another decade or three no problem. If you like vibrant fruit and mature Bdx notes, no harm in drinking one today.

Gorgeous bouquet of red/black fruit, tobacco, cassis, leather, pencil shavings and vanilla. The texture on the mouth is quite nice. Medium body, medium+ acid and light tannin. This is good but a bit off balance. The acid is kind of high for the fruit weight but the finish is lovely. This might get better in time but it’s not one of my favorite 98s.
The nose is incredible and perfumed with a combination primary and secondary notes. Theres still a lot of fruits left which is mainly black fruits, black currant. Theres toast, spices and mushroom notes as well. Medium+ acidity and medium+ tannin. The tannin is velvety and polished.

Still showing a bit of tannin after 24 years. Nicely balanced and full bodied with earthy flavors and red beets dominating. Balanced and enjoyable but not showing the fruit and complexity of the better vintages. Better showing than a bottle last year. Decanted for two hours. Drink now - 2035.

Uncorked five hours in advance, then decanted just before dinner. Incredible nose but lackluster on the palate compared to the all the fireworks that were the other two bottles (from same source) we've opened in the past two years. Tight/perfect cork, no change in conditions, but flat on the palate. I'm so tired of bottle variation.

4th March 2022 Decanted 30mins; Blinkist tasting with Penfolds 707 1999.
Colour has a hint of brown, reflecting a less intensed fruit profile compared to the 707. The nose is balanced with no discernible fragrance. Overall, the wine is extremely balanced, no doubt about it. The finish is medium but perhaps missing some character compared to the 707.

Oh good Lord. OK. Wow. Nose is beyond belief. And so tannic still after 24 years. Pure, so pure - simply extraordinary. Forest/hedgerow berries, woodsmoke. This is a thing of great beauty. Of course. Chocolate, dustings of cocoa, wet slate, mint, tobacco, dark cellars and dungeons and mysterious nooks and crannies. Fascinating. But not something I would pay silly money for. Which is what it costs - silly money.
[Tasted Blind] A: deep garnet, but still very dark red and not much orange, some sediment N: pronounced, sweaty leather, mildew, forest floor, herbaceous black currant leaf, Asian five spice, clove, muted fruit notes, cooked plum, cooked blackberry, chocolate and tobacco, and even more leather and barnyard after that P: pronounced, like the nose, dominated by tertiary notes of leather, mushroom, chocolate and tobacco, and the cooked plum and blackberry, black cherry compote
Full body, med alcohol, low tannin (smooth and round now), med+ finish, dry. Very complex wine on both nose and palette. However it is surprisingly mellow, definitely showing the age on the bottle. Does not really open past the initial sediment decant. Probably would recommend to drink as it seems to be at the peak, never really evolving over the 2-3 hours. Extremely smooth and sexy mouthfeel. The alcohol and tannins are just so integrated now creating that luscious experience. 93 pt

Wine Dinner w/new friends in JAX (Rue St Mark): I don't think of '98 as a great year but this was a really compelling wine and more compelling than I had originally expected it to be. Spice and black fruits and lavender and really just in this perfect spot right now.
Perfect bottle, perfect cork. Initially a bit compact. With air getting open. Lots of pencil shavings and dark (very dark) chocolate. Good intensity. Currently maybe lacks a bit of complexity. Some missing fruit (given its youth appearance) would round it up and make it even more approachable. Still years ahead to develop further. 94+

Good fill line. Clear, med ruby. Med to full body. Very dry and astringent, dusty, slate, earthy, tobacco, iodine, black fruit profile, med tannins, long chewy finish. This being Cab vs Merlot based, drank much differently than the Petrus. Interesting stuff and a variant from left bank wines accustomed to. Wonderful.

Paired with duck confit. Pristine cork. Decanted for approx 45 min. Nose of cherry, plum, tobacco. Some forest floor and barnyard. Tannins prominent. Palate of predominently red fruits. Some secondary notes evolving with some savory notes, graphite. Wish I could have decanted longer, but this was fantastic.

good youngish medium red color, maturing nose with cassis, cedar, punchy cherries and forest floor notes just starting to emerge, slightly austere, on the palate this remains on the stern side, tannins resolving but still very much present, cassis, fruitcake, ripe blueberry, fine long finish that is just a bit rough around the edges, while it started off a bit subdued volume-wise- after about 3 hours in decanter it was anything but, filling out and showing that full bodied majesty of its early days that made this vintage so very promising, also while it remained a bit severe around the edges- some of the sharper tones softened indicating this marvelous Mouton is almost fully grown, and indeed while it is approachable now with a few hours of decanting- a few more years are needed for this to be at its best, I am a staunch fan of Mouton and have enjoyed the interesting dimensions and outcomes of its more experimental periods, but 1998 was a very clear indication of the wine finding its stride in a Bordeaux world that changed dramatically after the Golden Decade of the 1980s- sometimes for good, and sometimes not so much, and so it is very rewarding to see this wine at age 23 living up to the great promise it showed at release, I am not sure all of the burly edges of its younger days will fully ameliorate- so this may finish out a bit on the austere side, but that beautiful rich full bodied fruit will surely come fully out of hiding soon- preserving this Mouton's reputation as one of the finest wines of the vintage.

Opened and poured from a split. Purple flowers with red fruits, especially strawberry as it opens, earth and light barnyard. Subtle mocha and leather with nice chalky tannins and grip. Light and bright on the palate with a finish that dances the whole way.

I think its a fantastic wine to drink now, very fresh but with some beginning tertiary notes. Still lot of potential. Beautiful. Every component sits where they should. Great experience. High acidity Medium tannin (very smooth) Medium alcohol Long finish

Opened by Mark. Decanted 4 hours before dinner. 2nd time I have had this wine. The first being upon release when the producer was pouring at a tasting. This has really rounded into form. Drank next to a 1998 Haut Brion and 1998 Mayacamas. Light sediment. Crimson color. Solid tannins. Solid core of red fruit with ripe berries, beef blood and currant notes. Very lively and youthful. No rush to drink. 97 points

Open and decanted for 1+ hours - poured from a split. Earth, wet tabbacco leaves, moist leather, perfume, violets, thyme and honeysuckle. The nose on the glass is like walking through a botanical garden in spring after a good rain. More expressive than most Moutons we’ve tried. Creating a glercerial effect in the mouth. Lovely, tight structure and seems to have many years to go.

Algemeen / potentieel: Mouton does not change. 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 13 + Smaak / Afdronk: 18 + Algemeen / potentieel: 9 = 95/100
Color: Deep dark red with a slight orange-brown discoloration at the edge. Aroma / bouquet: Presumably I am positively biased when it comes to Mouton, my wine love started with a bottle of Mouton Rothschild 1973. But this '98 Mouton convinces from the first impression. A delicate but pleasant, complex and refined bouquet. Dark dried fruit, cedarwood, spices, leather and a hint of tobacco. Taste / Finish: On the palate, this wine is no less convincing. On the one hand buttery soft and velvety on the palate, but on the other hand the beautifully aged tannins provide the wine with structure and a pleasant, subtly bitter, bite. Nice balance between acids, tannins, alcohol and filling. An exceptionally long finish. General / potential: [/ i] Mouton does not change. I hope to taste all (still drinkable) Moutons from 1973. That is rarely a disappointment, tonight it was a party! And nevertheless I have doubts about WA's drinkability rating, which estimates the wine as drinkable until 2035. I doubt whether this wine will get better and especially whether it will not lose its persuasiveness in the next 15 years. 50 + Color: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 13 + Taste / Finish: 18 + General / potential: 9 = 95/100
Opened 1 hour prior to first taste - nose was muted but old world notes present. Little discombobulated on the palate upon first sips. 2 hours in the nose becomes more rounded with raspberry, rhubarb followed by blueberry on the palate. Light red color rim and a lighter flavor gracing the palate. Lovely fragrant wine with leather and sandalwood with some wet tobacco intermixed. Overall beautiful old school wine.

Wine tasting Dinner - sundry HQ (J,S,J,K) (At home): Decanted 3½ hours in advance. It was open and well balanced with plenty of fruit and of course green bell pepper. Beginning tertiary notes like farmyard. That wine can develop for many many years - I look forward to follow the development for my remaining 5 btls. Tasted against Montrose 1998, which was a little angular with too much cedar (oak) compared to the fruit. The fruit was dried and the wine tasted almost dusty. Not well balanced. clear aromas of green pepper. I am not sure this wine will develop positively because of the missing fruit - i rated it 91+

Decanted over cocktails but that was a mistake as I just saw LPB's note suggesting three hours. While it was delicious, it needed more air to open up. As tasted it was restrained but high-toned with lots of leather and earth but little nuance. I have one more bottle and will be sure to decant longer.

Voluptuous nose with lots of cherries and raspberries. On the palate lots or ripe red berries and some blackberries, blackcurrant and wet leather. Very smooth and nicely integrated tannins. Round and elegant body - beautiful. Long and very juicy finish with lots of ripe red berries. Absolutely in a great spot right now, drink up within the next 8 years. (IG)
“One of the better Moutons in the 90s. Arguably 95 or 96 maybe slightly better, but I wouldn’t bet my pants for it, as the 98 has it’s different charm. It has more fruits, more elegance, and more complexity and depth. It looks like Mouton in the 90s is a big leap forward compared to the 80s (except 82). So it now truly qualifies as a first growth, but in the past an absolute roller coaster label.” more tasting note in finewines.com.sg

Quite tight and unforgiving at first. Only began to unwind after 2 1/2 hours in the decanter. Then licorice and plums in a river of liquid velvet. But that’s all and a bit light. Lacking greater complexity and interest. Drink up sooner than later. Will hold but not going anywhere.

Tasted at the New Year Dinner at Berrin & Ayşe thanks to Zeynep Diren İncesu who kindly brought this. Shows beautiful evolution with undertones of medlar and iodine wrapped around a core of sweet berries and sweet spices. Medium-weight with focus and concentration. The caressing texture and arresting blueberry flavours lead to a long, generous finish.

95-96: Wow. Just incredible - this wine has it all, except the fruit is rather austere. Loads of secondary notes, graphite, smoke, mineral notes, with a finish that goes nearly a minute. It's lean, but damn, it's beautiful.
I had not tasted this vintage before and was very pleased with what I found. Classic Cabernet Sauvignon aroma and flavors of black fruit, black licorice and espresso. Tannic and backwards but not brutal. Of course it needs a lot more time but it’s promising in this vintage more renown for its Right Bank successes.

Terrific wine that showcases the best of this chateau. Still displaying a super dark purple color, suggesting a long life still ahead. On the nose you get a lot of beautiful bordeaux earthy elements - leather, tobacco, a touch of smoke. Fruit is present and still strong, backed by firm tannins that still seem to be on the upswing. Beautiful long finish, everything comes to together nicely. Definitely has room to age - I'd say in 10yrs, this wine will merit a score north of 95 pts. One of the best bottles I've had from this chateaux lately, worthy of its First growth status.

The wine starts off with an array of layers in the perfume. Full-bodied and concentrated, with layers of fruit. But the finish is a bit clipped. The wine is very good, but the brief finish is a bit disappointing. Time will add complexities, but the finish is probably not going to get any better.

Much like jmprusko's adventure, our little group tasted this alongside the '98 Lafite. The Mouton had a rounder, classic profile with roasted meat, leather and nice, solid black fruit. Tannins more refined than the Lafite. Excellent and ready to go (Lafite had more grippy tannins and screamed for more aging).

Drank 98 Mouton vs 98 Lafite at a big wine dinner at Winvian. Decanted both for and hour. Mouton started with musty old bordeaux nose but brightened up after some time in the glass. Lafite smelled perfect immediately. Both had a relatively short finish, table was evenly mixed as to preference.

Didn't imagine this was a 20+ year old wine. Served blind and thought it was something from Pomerol with with the green bell peppery and slightly leathery scent. What a surprise! Great youth , dark red fruits, cedar, a bit musty, hints of dried herbs and a little alcoholic on the nose. Blander than I would expect on the palate, a little red fruits, unripe tannins, short finish, not impressive

Mouton Rothschild vertical 1878-2002 (Old Swiss House, Lucerne): Fresh fruit and slightly smokey on the nose with a herbal angle reminding me of fresh basil. On the palate quite a fruit juice type of character with already great balance, certainly better than some of the older and younger siblings.

Mouton Vertical (Lucerne): The runner-up (behind the `82) with many layers of fruit and other aromas, classic freshness and structure. This is well integrated and with lovely tertiary aromas, although I guess with more of those it will be even better in 5 years. I especially adored the lushness combined with the Pauillac freashness as well as the sense of completeness.
TN: Barnyard, leather, toasty oak and loads of dark fruit on the wonderful nose. The palate was sensational with sweet dark berries, lush toasty oak aromas balanced by cool cassis, a lot of cristal clear minerality and some fresh herbs. Good depth, length and precision woven into a very good structural frame. The wine is still young, more tertiary aromas on the palate will add further complexity and joy but other than this is quite complete.
Decanting: Double decant & slow-ox for 3 hours which did the job.

Decanted for 2 hours, but I think it’s a 4 to 5 hour decant after it improved by that time. Dark color and showing the Mouton exotic (baking spices, truffle, pipe tobacco), faint Brett, pencil lead and cherry liquor. Flavor was again dark cherries, Cabernet spice, pencil lead, tannins (I think they will soften with age). Surprisingly rich; given the vintage. Arguably the Left Bank Wine of the Vintage. Although can be enjoyed now; I would age another 3 to 5 years to hit it’s prime.

This type of bottle needs time to develop, but after 20 years we gave it a try. And frankly: it was underwhelming, despite a solid two hours decanting and optimum food pairing (lamb). Timid in the nose, with some blackberry and cask notes. Medium bodied, this wine boasts charming aromas of mature blackberries, cedar, hints of toast and chocolate, but it is merely scratching the surface. By the "sounds" of the tannins this needs at least another decade to wake up, but I suspect that it will never deliver real value for money.

Medium garnet red. Lovely nose with layers of perfume, damp leaves, leather, tobacco and dried cherries. Medium tannins (5.5/10) and medium bodied. Tons of dried red cherries on the palate mixed in with leather, damp forest floor and mushrooms. Long and lingering finish, that still has quite a bit of acidity on the back end. Drink till 2038.

This is well-layered and integrated with lots of smoky black fruits along with notes of tobacco, ripe cassis and fresh cedar. The finish shows some grippy, tart tannins but underneath is a lovely complexity that really shows off the smoky, spice side of Mouton. Could use a bit more time to soften the tannins or a good steak to mask them. 93+

Drank this at Imperial Treasure Fine Teochew Cuisine (Tanjong Pagar Centre) to celebrate a mate's 40th birthday. Wine was presented by the generous birthday boy.
Colour turning brick red with a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers on the nose. After 20 years, this wine is just starting to open up, after 6 hours of bottle breathing and 2 hours in the decanter.
Lots of ripe red fruits coupled with leather and dark chocolate and cherries. Mineral notes compliment the fruits with earthy, wet soil and some cedar, and cassis notes taking over.
Nice and complex with a touch of cigar and tobacco. Wonderful wine (and experience) which I hope to savour again in the future.

(Blind tasting) Full, dark fruit, dense, slightly barnyardy nose. Rich oak, cedar and earth. Lovely coffee, toast and liquorice notes after a while. Medium-fullish, balanced between restrained and rich palate. Black currant, earth, black plum and violets. Long finish. Our guess - super-second Pauillac or Saint Julien. Not as rich and luxurious as Mouton can appear. But very classic claret and generous considering the vintage. Has more upside.

It's a dinner hosted by Chateau Mouton in which served Mouton 1998, Mouton 2005, Le patit Mouton 2008, Clerc Milon 2009, D'Armailhac 2010 and 2011. To me, the best wine is D'Armailhac 2011 and Mouton 2005.
D'Armailhac gives you nice strong wet leather flavor and on palate with a heavy body but quite smooth. Mid finish. 92
Mouton 2005 also gives you leather flaver with more minerality. Smooth and round. Finish is a little bit longer. 92
Actually, the other three are quite similar to Mouton 2005, but not so smooth and so well balanced. Some are more salty, some have more acidity, etc. I give D'Armailhac 2010 -- 91, Clerc Milon 2009-- 91, Peteit Mouton 2008 -- 91, and Mouton 1998 -- 92.

This bottle may actually make me pay more heed to the reviews of the Wine Advocate's Lisa Perrotti-Brown, who gave the '98 Mouton a glowing 97 point review in the latest WA update. This bottle was right up to the level set by her review - an amazing nose, great fruit, voluptuous texture. From what I always thought to be a meh left bank vintage (especially in comparison to the outstanding '98 St-Emilion), this was an outstanding bottle, even better than the '95 that I had last year. Decanted for probably 60-90 minutes, and then drank leisurely over the next 2 hours with the tasting menu at Marcel's in DC.

Just a great bottle of wine that could go up in score as it ages. Holding tight to its deep, dark color, you find espresso, tobacco leaf, blackberry, cassis and spice on the nose. Rich, silky, opulently textured fruits just feel great on your palate. The wine remains youthful, fruity and with another decade, should be a knockout!

Brother Jeff's visit to DC - Mostly Bordeaux (The Grill Room at the Rosewood DC): Hedonistic nose displaying luxurious opulent red fruit that I associate with Mouton, also a hint of cassis, caramel, ink, licorice, dark flowers, caramel and earth. Medium concentration, silky and polished, perfect amount of acidity, a hint of coarse tannins and a medium to long cherry and ink driven finish. I like the opulent fruit, sort of modern in style.

Color is dense, opaque, and inky to garnet in tones. Smells are smoke, meat, hoisin, leather, currants, dill, black olive, plum, and earthy notes. Tastes are hoisin, pepper, currants, smoke, meat, pencil, and sour cherry. The tannins are fine grained and dry while the finish is long. Very complex and a fun 20th anniversary wine ro drink with my beautiful wife.

Quite a dark and exotic nose, certainly for a 1998! Dark chocolate and compote. A touch of spice and herbal complexity; more classic and austere on the palate, not nearly as exciting as the nose. some pretty drying tannins come in before long. Chewy finish. This needs a steak or roast beef perhaps?

Developing ruby core with a touch of a garnet hue; really lovely on the nose, nicely defined mellow plum and cherry fruits alongside mineral notes and a herbal lift; quite delicate on the palate, some pretty fruits on coaxing and quite a bite of tannin still. Quite dark and mineral, not a generous style, in keeping with the vintage. Pretty austere actually and pinched. 20 years is more than enough time for this. A bit simple. Showing the limitations of the vintage.

First pour from a Coravin. This started off really interesting with a youthful nose of blackberry, tar, and pencil lead. The palate had a lot of fruit, grip and intrigue. But with air, it fell into a bit of a dumb state. The nose moved more and more towards leafy tobacco until that was all that was left. The palate stayed smooth but lost complexity. I'm not sure if I just needed to wait it out and give it more air or not. I left it for about 3 hours and it didn't improve, so I'm not sure. It definitely had a certain healthy fruitiness compared to other 1998s that might be why Parker singled it out for a high score. I didn't notice any of the underripe fruit or even rotten or green notes on other Left Bank 1998s. I am going to see how future Coravin pours go, but although easy to drink now, I think it needs more bottle time to show it's full potential, assuming that there is more to show...

Big Bordeaux & Burgundy XIII (Kevin and Vicki's House): 2 hour decant. Orange peel on the nose. This is more elegant than the 1988 Lafite served before it. Refined tannins, a little funky, kind of a grapey funk. Tar. This is a very nice Mouton Rothschild that is drinking better than I thought it would.

Big Bordeaux & Burgundy XIII (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Very dark red/purple color. Decanted for 2 hours; drank 1 glass over 75 minutes. Very pretty and more bold nose with fresh cedar, earthy, dark fruit, graphite, and tobacco leaf. The palate is big and full bodied, nice dark fruits, cassis, black raspberry, graphite, nicely balanced with refined silky tannins. Feels youthful,l but it is so well integrated already. Should go for another 20 years.

Grand Burg & Bordeaux Tasting (Kevin's (Rocknroller) House): Nose: Like the Lafite massive dark fruits initially w/ a nice perfumy/floral quality. After added glass air time cassis and sweet nutmeg show. Palate: Massive black fruits w/ cassis, red fruit hints and a very long, elegant finish. Best Mouton I've had and was narrowly edged out by the Lafite.

Pretty classic BDX. Saddle, dark and red fruits. Still drinks quite young. Anise and kirsch. This has a good amount of tannin but starting to resolve. This should be even better in another 5-10 years.

very smooth, at the probable top of its form but by no means at the end of its life cycle, still good structure, dark purple color and impressive fruit. On the nose, the wine offers up currants, dark cherries and cedar and lots more indescribable scents as it aired out over dinner. it was decanted and drunk over 1 1/2 hours and continued to evolve. Tannins are silky and the wine is in perfect balance.

From half bottle purchased as a future and stored since release in a cold cellar. . Youthful purple core with no signs of age. Notes of ripe black fruits, cigar box, and briar patch, with hints of campfire and truffle. Medium bodied, with great depth and focus; good structure and delineation on the finish. Rather intellectual in style; a classic claret through and through!
Tasted throughout the progression of 4 hours. A roller coaster of love. Very tight to begin with herbs, mint and muted fruit. Hour in the wine was still fairly tight with a better expression of tobacco leaves, hickory and muted bramble fruit. 2 hours in the fruit opened up but the mid palate was fairly neutral and nice integrated tannins on the finish. 4 hours in it is singing softly with balanced mint, Cassis, terroir, cherry, black fruit and an elegant finish with a finish that explains all that Mouton is meant to be. This wine will still age 10+ as the acid backbone to the tannins is still in place. Hope this is helpful.

2017 New Year's Day Tasting (Marietta, GA): Dark core with garnet rim; green pepper, cigar, earth, sandy, graphite, red currants, classic, ash, initially suspected Pauillac but definitely Left Bank; fatter on the palate, grainy and firm tannin, lacking just a touch balance to be really good; would wait longer to let tannins soften though I don't suspect much improvement.

Double decanted three hours, the integrated tannins are soft and reverently revealed within the classic structure of this 90’s Bordeaux. Cedar, forest floor, black currant, blackberry, black cherry tart, cassis, leather, lead pencil, burning fall leaves, coffee, chocolate, and dried licorice, this member of court is reminiscent of the classic winemaking style of twenty five to thirty years ago. Spicy and smooth drinking like a thoroughbred.

offered wine for holiday party decanted but stayed closed most of the time eventually opened up but was disappointed. black fruit but not impressive. oh well. no sediment. needed more time.
Consistent notes with the last one three years ago. Still more interesting for me on the nose than on the palate. Pretty classic aromas, with flavors that, while pretty, aren't really exciting (like the nose is). Not sure where this is headed, but it's a fine drop and in many ways, understated.
Audozed 9 hours, then decanted just prior to dinner - followed over 3 hours (pretty consistent across that time). Served non-blind.

Domaine Chicago party: A great showing of Mouton here today. The nose was simply lovely, showing lots of graphite and plum. Delicious black fruit with just the right amount of sweetness to balance this wine out. The palate is very full, with great density, and transitions from attack to finish in one seamless package. The secondary characteristics are out in full force on the palate, with some more of that graphite quality, as well as a bit of leather. The tannins are already quite silky too.

I got a fair bit of brett the nose, though it was tasty. Fruit fading in my opinion. I'm not steeped in 1st growth, tho based on this bottle I'd say drink up.
This wine outperformed my moderately high expectations. More approachable that most Mouton's that I have enjoyed, it benefitted from an hour's decant but was drinking pretty splendidly at that point. The nose is deep and rich and complex, with some telltale Bordeaux notes of pencil but also a very rich sense of fruit. On the palate this is Left Bank goodness, round and long lasting.

Memorial Day Mondo Event - Burghounds & Bordelais: Tough to follow the '82 Pichon Lalande in this tasting line-up, but the '98 Mouton performed better than I expected. Classic Pauillac notes with a long finish. While it still has good structure and youthfulness, I did not get the grainy tannins that I often get from the '98 vintage. Decanted for 2 hours, this wine was fleshy and fat. I did not experience any leanness that others have described with this vintage of Mouton.

95 pts

Youthful ruby in color. Sexy, perfumed nose reveals blackcurrant, graphite, crushed flower, and spicebox. The spice notes dominate with time in the glass. Quite classic Pauillac. Second bottle from a case. Enjoyable and very classic Pauillac. Not super concentrated. Key question is whether this will get much better in 5+ years as many suggest. I have my doubts as I just don't think it has the depth of fruit. Suspect it will soften, add a little complexity but start to fade. Maybe 10 years more life in it? On verra.

A firm backbone, quite recognizable as Paulliac, standing firm and majestic after a range of Rhône Wines; the style is dry, cool, mineral with a good focus and a strong blackberry-fruit. Still young, certainly, but it is not infanticide to drink it now. (with Pacalet at CP)

More alcohol on the nose than accompanying vintages. Slight must, tar notes, and a cork scent with air time. On the palate, subdued fruit, earth/dirt with faint menthol on the back palate and herbaceous notes on the side. Everything integrated and smooth tannins but overall lacks sufficient depth.

I drank this with coremill at Uncle Jacks. I got this wine as a 60th birthday gift last year, and I've been anxious to taste it. I'm no expert in French wines. My tastes are more California. That said, at first this was tangy and thin. Good - but not the fine wine experience I was hoping to have. Over the next 90 minutes, this was an easy drinking and smooth wine. I was pleased, but not 100 point pleased. The bottle has a beautiful label.

Old Bordeaux (Uncle Jack's): Only a hint of cedar gives away that this wine is 16 years old. Extremely primary, rich, ripe blue/black berry fruit, showing lots and lots of unintegrated fancy french oak, not super-extracted but extremely oaky and tannic on the palate. This is grumpier about being awakened prematurely than I am before my first cup of coffee in the morning. Judgment reserved, come back in a decade.

Definitely in its drinking window. The tannins have softened and the fruit is beginning to fade but still at least a decade left I would have thought (although I know that this particular bottle had not had the best of storage so might be more evolved than others). Notes of smoked earth, coffee and cigar. Smooth throughout with a pleasant, slightly bitter finish. Not in the superstar category for this Chateau but decent stuff all the same.

Consumed at SAFW Reunion. Tasted this right after the 1999 Mouton. This had a little more complexity and intensity of fruit. This all despite the '99 vintage probably being a tad better vintage overall. JMO. Aromas and flavors of blackberry, cassis, leather, spice, cedar and cigar box from the oak. Also, some graphite, but not to the degree of Mouton's signature lead pencil perfume. The tannins are somewhat soft but not totally resolved. In the mouth the fruit is big, rich and intense. Great structure. A long, long finish. Score 93-94.

From the descriptions of other reviewers, I would say that this is a wine that disappoints. Purple color with a rather modest bouquet and flavor, mainly dominated by tobacco, with little fruit in evidence. Moderate body, with the balance a bit off. No finesse, and not much of a finish. I too was disappointed.

Mouton, Ducru, Angelus, Scharecrow, Corra, ZH: This had been open for 5 hours to breathe. Purple in color. Tight on the nose to start, it kept gaining steam all night. The nose has some funk to it which I like. Also cassis, blackberries, cedar, roasted coffee and leather. On the palate, lots of fruit. Still needs more time. This is a big wine. With air, this unwinds showing lots of layered complexity. I don't this will ever be as good as the other two wines in the flight, but its outstanding. Long, persistent finish. Well balanced.

Birthday party for a 68 (Stockholm): Still painfully young compared to the wide open '68 Latour in the other glass. Not really a nose wine today - even if its poured in a huge glass - this is more about structure and balance, if not real length. A complete wine, on a medium frame. Fully recognisable from the Mouton-vertical last month, but it was more fun then. Keep/hold.

Wish I had decanted this longer - the last half-glass was the best. At first it came across surprisingly lean. I remember this wine as a fruit bomb from way back when, but the primary fruit has completely receded here and it doesn't have the sense of density or saturation that I expected - the fruit material feels sort of stretched to the point of being thin enough to see through. There is still plenty of tannin here, but fortunately not so much that it dries out the wine relative to what's left of the fruit. The leanness does highlight some other subtleties that might have otherwise been drowned out, mostly in the family of that textbook Pauillac "lead pencil" note - starting out weighted more towards the woody cedar (in the luxe Bordeaux fashion) but over the course of the bottle the wood integrates and leaves the graphite element behind. The last glass shows a ton of that stuff along with gravelly earth, but what's really nice about the end of the bottle is how the tannin, which started out coarse and muscular, became seriously refined, which also made the wine feel much more balanced vis-a-vis the lighter bodied fruit.
Iconic wine soiree, 1st quartet round, 4th meeting (at Yagil's): -- double decanted for sediment removal 4 hours before tasting -- classic nose of a good Pauillac, though not an excellent one. it had it all, but this wine is not an outstanding wine. very good. close to excellent.

Had it from an enomatic machine in Lavinia, Paris. Upon smelling it, the first and only descriptor that came to mind was "poopy wine" as heard from WineLibraryTv. It really smelled of poop (much stronger and pronounced than, say - animal, farmyard or similar aromas) and must have been ruined by brett. Hope it was just that one bottle.

Double-decanted 6 hours prior to being served non-blind, returned to bottle, less some mild sediment. Much better (having the benefit of a good aeration) than the bottle in January of this year. Classic, rich Pauillac typicity with smoke, pencil lead, black currants, gravel and some toast. Medium toward full-bodied, with silent but ample lift, creating a subtly seamless texture and managing to extend, and amplify the finish. This was more interesting on the nose than it was on the palate, but I think that's only because this has yet to hit its sweet-spot, which is likely just 4-5 years away. Elegantly enjoyable, and while it's not a blockbuster, there are still many qualities worth admiring. Be sure to give it some air; enjoy over the coming 15-20 years.

Not sure what everyone has been drinking but there are some serious overrating of this wine on the forum. This bottle was brought out by the chateau for a promotional event so storage has been perfect. Plenty of time for it to settle.
Dark ruby, with the merest touch of separation on the rim. Nut, bark, spice and leather on the nose. Really not a lot of fruit unless you count lemon as a desirable fruit! It certainly is clean and sharp but that is the acidity talking. Medium bodied in the mouth and again zesty acidity and just not the concentration you expect of a first growth. It is very nice but not close to be being great. The end of wine is a touch astringent and dry- even Mouton could not hide the fruit lack a degree of ripeness. There are similarities with 88 but it is slightly more modern and better made due to the technology and better selection.
Don't be seduced into buying this yourself. Enjoy it if you are being served it by a gracious host but this is no keeper and is not going to get better. Just trying to keep it real!

Return to San Anontio (Ducru Vertical); 2/21/2013-2/24/2013 (Monty): Served to me blind. Definitely bdx, with cassis and cherry on the nose. Palate was very polished with fine regal tannins., though a little hard. Only later did I get a touch of funk/flint on the nose to push me into the right region. This was the only '98 that came across as closed and requiring more time in bottle. Moderate finish, moderate weight. Nice purity of red fruit, though quite tannic. Could dry out, but only time will tell. Initially thought St Julian (Barton or Las Cases) when pointed to Pauillac went with Pichon Baron (oh well, should have gone with my gut that the tannin quality was a clue to a 1st growth's quality). 92-93

Served double-blind. PnP that needed about 3 hours of aeration in decanter. The first 15 minutes in the glass were nothing but campfire embers - like picking up a half-burned stick from the previous night's campfire and putting it right against your nose. After 15 minutes, trace amounts of red currant began to emerge, so I went ahead and tasted it - medium bodied, acidic, clumsy. And 15 minutes later, nearly a completely different wine, as it headed into a full-bodied, more energetic and interesting wine. Still, it wasn't until 1hr mark after it'd been poured in the glass that it began to exhibit some nobility and class. NOT a PnP wine. Seemed like it had another decade ahead of it.

Second blind Bordeaux-flight of the day. Pours drenched dark and deep intense ruby color.
The aromas are clearly more multifaceted and pronounced than the rest of the wines tasted today. Intoxicating complexity that makes you want to dig deeper and deeper. At first some prune fruit seem a bit warmer than anticipated, but then in an awesome wave the deep chassis, roasted coffee notes, leather, dried herbs and wet leaves sweeps in. Definitely reeking of left bank first growth.
More modern-styled but at the same time elegant, quite vigorous but not over-the-top. Plump, concentrated and vaguely astringent mouth feel. The tannins have softened a bit, but are still distinct and incredibly fine-grained. High refreshing acidity along with lots of flavors. On the palate I get characteristics of exotic spice, earth, truffles, cigar box and crème de cassis. Nuances of all flavors lingers in a long finish.
I find this wine lacking conceivable charm and some more roundness. Supposedly a "off"-vintage and yet barely noticeable. Tremendously attractive complexity. Fantastic balance (alcohol as low as 12,5%) and elegance. This wine can rest effortless for another 10 years in the cellar. Lovely! http://quaffable.org/?p=169
Decanted for two hours tasted over 2 days. It was 'elegant' but thin at first and shy on the nose. Cherry flavors on night two but thin and acidic.
Overall not a first growth caliber but I have experience with Mouton and expect this performance if it is too young. This is the first of my 98s and I fell the 99s are spot on and 95 just barely ready I'd leave this one at least until 2013

Cassis, smoke, earth, Asian spice and blackberry aromas lead to a full bodied wine with ample concentration. But the character of the vintage shows due to the lack of selection utilized by the chateau at the time. The finish shows signs of green olive tapenade in the slightly rough textures.

Needed 30 minutes to open up. Blind tasting, I guessed Pauillac of high quality in lesser year, such as 2002. Tell tale nose of Cigar box, dust, cassis and some violets deep down behind the wooden notes. Firm attack, medium body with good balance. Non obtrusive tannins. Low yields has certainly helped in a less good Cabernet-year such as 1998.

AMS Wijnantiquariaat (blind tasting) Bordeaux. Homogeneous dark purple colour. Classic and elegant in the nose, some cedar and pencil. Concentrated in the mouth. Still very young. (Like the 1994) needs time to open up. The 1999 (in same tasting) is much easier to appreciate at the moment.

CellarTracker Texas Offline; 5/21/2010-5/22/2010 (San Antonio): Generously donated by YoDaddyO. The nose says infanticide, black cherries, pencil shavings, truffles, violets, vanilla, cigar box. Still very tight. On the palate, black fruits, mint, espresso. Finishes with sweet but very sturdy tannins. This one needs years. 91 for now, has some upside. Outstanding

Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of barnyard, leather and a bit of mixed dark fruit. Flavors of plums, cassis and berries. Medium acidity, tannins and body. Drink now in my very humble opinion. I seriously doubt this wine is going anywhere. No rating on the off chance the bottle was off.

First Growths (slightly disappointing) and an amazing Port (John V.'s): Dark purple in color. The youngest wine on the table. The nose has some slight funk, cedar, cassis and bits of cherrries. On the palate, it switches more to black fruits. Very good and showing some complexity and firm tannins. May still develop from here but will never be truly great IMO.

Dark deep garnet-ruby. Seductive fragrances of graphite and leather, chocolate, mint, and mocha. This intense and opulent wine has a big body that remains firm due to abundant, yet astringent tannins that are quite fine-gained. Highly extracted and intense cassis, mocha, saddle leather and pencil shavings coat the mouth and remain long on the impressive finish. Will hold a few more decades.

A little light for Mouton, but very fruity and complex. Very smooth sweet, tannins. Went well with the Angus tenderloin. Nice contrast to the 1997 Raymond Generations.

Tasted blind from my Intro Retro: Sweet red cherry juice with slight briary hint to nose, shows breed. Palate is full with black cherry sweetness and regal quality personality. Pure with soft edge. I liked this alot as more complex than peers. Hammer in a velvet glove. What Bordeaux should taste like. Happy with my comments after wine was unveiled. My WOTN and group's number3.

A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. Popped and poured into the glasses. Dark ruby/ opaque, with a slim crescent. At the beginning very mute nose. It is a wine of great concentration! After some aeration the wine was evolving every minute. Layers of black forest fruits, cherry liquer, eau de vie, tobacco. asparagus, curry, crushed rocks, bitter chocolate, on a burnet wood background. Powerful with attractive acidity, vibrant tannins and velvety texture. The finish lasts about 30 sec. A masterpiece to enjoy the next 3 decades.

With 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% more than Chateau Lafite-Rothschild, this deeply colored, large scaled Pauillac offers aromatics of cassis, mocha, coffee and exotic spices. Very tannic, but lacking the same level of finesse found in the tannins from Chateau Lafite-Rothschild of this same vintage. At least two decades of sleep are required before this wine develops and becomes civilized.

Classical Bordeaux/Pauillac. Toasted oak, cassis, lead pencil. Same in the taste. Refined and elegant. Quite much acidity and bitterness. Will improve when it all softens a bit more.

Tasting Of Chateau Mouton Rothschild (At The Wine Summit 2008 – Lake Louise, Alberta): 86% CS, 12% M, 2% CF; Another extremely dark black/ruby – opaque in the glass; quite pungent on the nose, but the elements within come though cleanly – nose opens up on swirling to reveal cedar, some smoke, berry fruit; a bit dry on the palate – good acidity – tannins fairly in check but nevertheless noticeable; flavours feature roasted coffee, black currants – not as persistent as the previous wine, but finishes pleasantly enough but not a massively styled wine.

There were many amazing moments at the 2008 Post Hotel Wine Summit in Lake Louise Alberta Canada, but one of the highlights was a standing room only technical tasting of nine vintages from Chateau Mouton Rothschild. The charismatic and entertaining Adrien Laurent, North American Export Manager for Baroness Rothschild led us through this barrage of big Bordeaux and explained label by label nuances of the various artists who have graced the labels over the years. My first observation was how all nine glasses appeared the same dark inky purple beautiful color. The 1998 was lsightly lighter in color than all other at the table. While this was a great wine, it seemed a notch or two down from the 2000 and 03. Coffee, currant, and some leathery aromas made it way out of the glass. On the tongue, minerals like a chalky feel to it. Not like a merlot, but like a slate taste and smell. There was a meaty taste to as well almost gamey. I don’t know if this is between peaks as Adrien might have suggested or if this is not as stellar as some of the other Moutons.

This is nowhere like Parker's description. "Super concentrated?" Hardly. Suckling is much closer. Elegant, yes. Medium-bodied for sure. Decanted for 4 hours, after which it began to come around. At present, this is shut down pretty tightly. Good tannins, fine and prominent acidity, but fruit is muted. It was a BIG mistake to open this, but the occasion seemed to call for it :( If I had another, I'd hold it for at least another 15 yrs, in which time this could be a mid-90 pt wine.

California tasting @ Restaurant Savelberg (Netherlands): Tell-tale classic, reticent Bordeaux nose. Cigars, spice box, strawberries and cassis. Suffers from its position in the line-up, lacking the exuberance of the previous wines. Medium bodied, slightly tannic and bitter finish. 17.5/20

G7 (Pat): Blackberries, violets, blueberries and blackcurrant. Beautiful bright acidity. Elegant finish. Firm tannins. Made in more of a new world, fruit forward style. The least Bordeaux like of the '98 first growths. Nonetheless, a very nice wine.

Nothing out of the ordinary. Probably still too young, but tannic as hell. Deep, dark color, nice nose, but not a lot of fruit was evident. Some notes of cassis, and vanilla, but lacking on the fruit side.

Wine tasting. Beautiful nose shows black cherry and kirsch with good spice and. Tough fruit today on palate, stuck behind highly structured tannnins. Give this another decade or a long decant, and hopefully this will show more balance.

The label looks better online.

Opus One Family Exploration (Rockwell Rooftop Lounge): *This bottle was perhaps slightly affected by TCA, but not overly detrimental for my analysis*
[Tasted Blind]
A: deep garnet, but still very dark red and not much orange, some sediment
N: pronounced, sweaty leather, mildew, forest floor, herbaceous black currant leaf, Asian five spice, clove, muted fruit notes, cooked plum, cooked blackberry, chocolate and tobacco, and even more leather and barnyard after that
P: pronounced, like the nose, dominated by tertiary notes of leather, mushroom, chocolate and tobacco, and the cooked plum and blackberry, black cherry compote
93 pt

good youngish medium red color, maturing nose with cassis, cedar, punchy cherries and forest floor notes just starting to emerge, slightly austere, on the palate this remains on the stern side, tannins resolving but still very much present, cassis, fruitcake, ripe blueberry, fine long finish that is just a bit rough around the edges, while it started off a bit subdued volume-wise- after about 3 hours in decanter it was anything but, filling out and showing that full bodied majesty of its early days that made this vintage so very promising, also while it remained a bit severe around the edges- some of the sharper tones softened indicating this marvelous Mouton is almost fully grown, and indeed while it is approachable now with a few hours of decanting- a few more years are needed for this to be at its best, I am a staunch fan of Mouton and have enjoyed the interesting dimensions and outcomes of its more experimental periods, but 1998 was a very clear indication of the wine finding its stride in a Bordeaux world that changed dramatically after the Golden Decade of the 1980s- sometimes for good, and sometimes not so much, and so it is very rewarding to see this wine at age 23 living up to the great promise it showed at release, I am not sure all of the burly edges of its younger days will fully ameliorate- so this may finish out a bit on the austere side, but that beautiful rich full bodied fruit will surely come fully out of hiding soon- preserving this Mouton's reputation as one of the finest wines of the vintage.

It has more fruits, more elegance, and more complexity and depth. It looks like Mouton in the 90s is a big leap forward compared to the 80s (except 82). So it now truly qualifies as a first growth, but in the past an absolute roller coaster label.”

Lots of ripe red fruits coupled with leather and dark chocolate and cherries. Mineral notes compliment the fruits with earthy, wet soil and some cedar, and cassis notes taking over.

Full, dark fruit, dense, slightly barnyardy nose.

Outstanding

5/21/2010 - wineismylife Does not like this wine:
CellarTracker Texas Offline - Part One (San Antonio, TX): WIMLNR
Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of barnyard, leather and a bit of mixed dark fruit. Flavors of plums, cassis and berries. Medium acidity, tannins and body. Drink now in my very humble opinion. I seriously doubt this wine is going anywhere. No rating on the off chance the bottle was off.

1998 First Growths, Some SuperSeconds and Right Bank Equivalents (Goedhuis 2010 Charity Wine Dinner, Intercontinental Hotel Park Lane): We were being chased into dinner before I reached this wine, so a briefer note. Medium colour, not a very forthcoming nose. Very good, still quite tannic, definitely not ready yet. Did not really have time to do justice to this one.

Cedar, truffle and Asian spice add to the black fruit, cassis aromatics. Very silky with a concentrated mouth feel and pure Cabernet finish. This is only going to improve.

Tasting Of Chateau Mouton Rothschild (At The Wine Summit 2008 – Lake Louise, Alberta): 86% CS, 12% M, 2% CF;
Another extremely dark black/ruby – opaque in the glass; quite pungent on the nose, but the elements within come though cleanly – nose opens up on swirling to reveal cedar, some smoke, berry fruit; a bit dry on the palate – good acidity – tannins fairly in check but nevertheless noticeable; flavours feature roasted coffee, black currants – not as persistent as the previous wine, but finishes pleasantly enough but not a massively styled wine.
