Another 2004 horizontal (Hawksmoor Guildhall): Soft, rounded, sensual nose. Very approachable and easy to drink, with a hint of savour and some sweetness and decay showing with air. Fabulous with the T-bone, then, but I actually preferred the punchier showing when I last had this in 2020. Given that, I'm tempted to leave my other bottles a few years in order to lean into the wine's tertiary side.

Jonathan’s/Nick’s 04 Bordeaux (Hawksmoor Guildhall, London): Dense mid to full ruby. Some blackcurrant and blackcurrant leaf, softer with a touch of mocha. Some spice. Soft and approachable. Really quite giving. Lovely but not quite up to the promise of the 06 Bibendum tasting or a subsequent bottle at the 09 Alba PB offline.

Excellent for the vintage. As good as Palmer 2004 I drank recently. Nose of cassis, leather, pencil lead, tobacco and peppery note. Palate is fairly rich, dark fruit and leather, some mushroom and tobacco and chocolate notes and smooth tannins. Medium finish

(at Elkridge Club - Baltimore) Glorious from magnum. Classic Pauillac black current and tobacco nose. Maturing fruit is sweetening and plump yet the backbone provides balance. Best at 60 minutes after decanting. One of the better 2004 Bordeaux I have tasted. Bravo. No rush but why not? (94)

Beautiful given the vintage I think Pauillac shone in 2004. Rich ruby red color. Decanted and aerated for two hours then drank over 90 minutes. Perfumed cassis nose, black pepper, graphite. On the palate very intense, lots of cassis and dark red fruits, some leather and graphite, explosive fruit mid palate, amazing structure, finishes rich with bitter chocolate notes with silky tannins.

Lovely bottle of unmistakeable claret. Showing some tertiary evolution of smoked meat, tobacco, dried cherries but only just. Still lots of freshness and fruits left. Pencil shaving, graphite and the usual Bordeaux goodness. Bell peppers coming across nicely and not jarring. Good to go now, and potential to age for another decade no doubt.

(Bdx 2004 "2ème cru"-tasting) Medium-fullish nose. Quite rich. Black fruit, coco-nut oak, hints of iron minerality. Some tertiary barnyard and a nice perfume of violets and flowers. Medium-fullish, fullish palate. Ripe, mellow tannins. Hints of Brett, but not disturbing. Cigarre, leather and savory notes of bell pepper. Nico, but quite old-school. A bit rustic. Quite classic and better now than in 10 years.

Amazing how the wine continues to evolve ever so slowly in bottle. Same dark ruby red color, nose of cassis, coffee, rocks, pencil lead and spice. On the palate structure remains the same, nice mid palate acidity, very terroir driven, almost like a Les Forts de Latour with more character. Superb balance, finishes slightly short with melting tannins. Still very enjoyable to drink today as it was the first time I sampled this with Oz Clarke in 2010!
A good 12 years since we tried this at the chateau ( Papies 92-93) and at that time was atill with the puppy fat and the smoky , chocholately oak. On this day served blind and people took it for a new world Bordeaux blend. Even when told this was old world they went to Italian rather than Bordeaux. And indeed at this stage ( still young btw albeit very much approachable and worth a try) it has than new world ripe and oaky feel albeit the Wien owns the oak. It is richer than expected given an 04 albeit our exposure to this vintage is very limited. Pretty wine still and full of charm but more like it’s just come back from a California vacation at this stage than a pure claret. 92-93 and has a lot of life ahead

Eighth time writing a tasting note on this wine since 2020. I have probably had this vintage from this producer more than any other wine since the pandemic. It has taken an interesting journey for me because there is definitely bottle variation. This time the wine was singing after a proper 2 hour decant. Early maturity window and it contains everything I love about the Pauillac region. So tasty!

Wow. This is a step up from the last bottle tasted and the ‘04 Barton drunk last week. The deep ruby colored wine is rich and complete. Plump cassis and plum fruit mixes nicely with earth, oak and autumnal leaves. Fullish, yet now integrated - no longer feeling over-manipulated. Impactful. Long. For a cool evening and rich food. Love the balance on the finish. Really good. (94). Decanted 6 hours in advance. What a total contrast stylistically to the Sociando from last night.

Evolving at a glacial pace from the last time I had this wine 4 years ago. Dense black ruby color, nose of cassis, rocks, graphite, pencil lead and pepper, quintessentially Pauillac. Decanted and aerated for two hours then gobelled it over an hour. Solid spicy cassis on the palate, black currants, some gamyness if I may dare. Powerful wine yet lush, great body mid palate and good acidity, finishes with notes of bitter coffee and cigar box with tannins coated with the fruit. Lovely wine to drink over next ten years and luckily I still have a case!

Drinking reasonably now. Typical Pauillac nose with graphite and dark plum. Tannin is resolving and food friendly acidity. Should hold in this place for decades.

This is a nice time to catch the 2004 Pichon Baron; though it still has a little oak to integrate its a vivacious Baron in early maturity. Sporting a voluminous nose of blackberry, cedar, and tea, this is accessible as soon as it hits the decanter and is even more impressive on the expressive, coal-inflected palate. The 2004s can be a little smudged, but this is still a delicious wine.

From 375: Nose and palate say Pauillac. Stern Cabernet based wine just entering it's optimal drinking window, almost twenty years post vintage. More approachable than the '96. Beautiful Bordeaux nose and well balanced palate. Enjoyable now, but will last for years. Addendum: two hours after opening, this wine really sings. Recommend decanting. 93?.

Looks and tastes young, which it is. Beautiful aromatics. It starts and ends strong but loses its intensity at the mid palate. Plums, spice, tobacco, bell pepper. Grippy tannins. Have it with beef, and it will be beautiful.

Seventh time tasting this wine over the past few years. While it is very good, it is nowhere near what it was a few years back. There is definitely either bottle variation or this has gone into a dumb phase. It is still really good and very Pauillac but it is just not as good as some of my prior tastings. Decanted for 1 hour.

Tuesday Night Double Blind $50+ (Bin 75 Alpharetta, GA): Opaque core with thin maroon rim; so perfumed, truffle, musk, dark leather, touch of green, super noble, Cuban cigar, graphite, broad swaths on the palate, dark chocolate, a bit monolithic, good depth; '00 Pichon Baron?

Tasty wine. Solid structure but it just never seemed to open up or fill out fully. Berry fruit, dried berry fruit, definite graphite/stones/minerality, herbal/green element. Dusty yet chewy tannins, but on the lighter side of tannic. Medium bodied, waning acidity. My last bottle and glad it is done (not sure if it has much more aging to do). A note ... by day 2 the oxidation had started to enter, definite decline.

Took to a dinner party last night. Also drank a 2006 Gruad Larose. Both wines drinking beautifully, but the Pichon-Baron had a slight edge, it was everyone's favorite.
Good wine, but I couldn't help but feel a bit underwhelmed. Pretty restrained and never seemed to fully open up, even with quite a bit of air. Maybe the bottle needs a bit more time or maybe it's just the vintage.

I bought a decent amount of this based on reviews at release. My first bottle. It’s good, maybe very good yet I can’t shake the felling that it’s a bit juiced. Dark garnet - opaque still. Lots of berry fruit on the nose…a little leather … a little oak. A touch heavy handed on the palate as you can sense the terrific material - just too much surrounding structure/crap. Too bad as this could have been sensational. As it is, good quality and if you like the style, will like it more than me. A stylistic disconnect for my palate. (91)

From magnum. I read the notes and opened it 3 hours early with the last hour in the decanter. Drank over next 2. Dark and somber; very nice overall. Smoke and tar notes and a hint of truffle. Subtle and classy. The length might be my only complaint. Very different personality than other 2004 Bdx particularly the 2004 PL which developed early. This has a long way to go.
3/12, excellent cork. Decanted 1 hr. Very deep ruby/garnet core, narrow pale ruby rim. Nose is quite youthful, with blackcurrant fruit, cedar, vanilla and even a touch of mocha, rich but quite fragrant still. Medium/full bodied on the palate, with blackcurrant, cedar, spice, some savoury gamey/meaty notes, attractive fresh acidity and rthen a good length if still slightly grainy finish.

Another consistent and classic bottle of this vintage of Baron. It shows deep crimson colour with minimal red at the edge and a classic nose of blackcurrant, cedar, liquorice and black olive. The palate has a very good impact of blackcurrant fruit and a fine finish with a touch of blackberry leaf, cedar and Cuban cigar bringing a refined and mellow touch.

Very weird... I’ve had this bottle many times in the past 12 months and the last two bottles were not as good or as evolved as all of the others. This bottle very much needed time in the decanter and needed coaxing from the glass. Based on my last two tastings of it, I will lay the rest of mine down for another few years.
Medium ruby appearance. No hint that this bottle (purchased on release and stored properly) is 15 years or so old.
Evolving nose of black fruits, cassis , tobacco and some vanilla. Classic Pauillac for sure. There has been 0 evolution from a bottle opened about a year ago.
Medium bodied with plenty of structure and acidity. Lots of similar flavor characteristics on the palate with a medium plus delicious finish. The palate confirms that this is a textbook example of a great estate in a cool and "off" vintage.
Overall a great food friendly wine . This stuff can last forever, but I don't think this will improve or even open up further.

Decanted over 2 Hrs. Dark garnet with slight hue of brick red on the rim. Very concentrated nose of brambles, hint of cassis, slight metallic, marzipan. Cassis, tobacco. Still tannic, but mid-way on dissolution. Nice wine, quite young, a little subdued and leaves question mark to potential and evolution... better let it rest for a while.

Interesting tasting experiment. As background, I’ve had the 2004 Baron now five times in 2020 and have purchased more for the cellar because I have loved it so much. In my four prior tastings, it warranted a consistent 94 point rating. However, for my fifth tasting note, I knocked it back to 90 points. Why? Was it an off bottle vs the others? No. It was not flawed in any way. The reason it did not show as well is that it immediately followed 1994 Chateau Latour Grand Vin that had been decanted for two hours and the Pichon was pulled out via Coravin with no decant. The bottom line is that the order in which you drink your wines matters. The environment and conditions like decanting, food pairing, palate fatigue, how much sleep you had the night before, stemware, etc all influence the wine tasting experience. In this instance, following a Grand Vin Latour that was 10 years older that was properly decanted put the Pichon into its proper place. One week later, I pulled the cork, decanted the remaining wine and it was so delicious when served by itself. So should I rate it as a stand alone wine when properly decanted or rate it as it was first experienced following a first growth? Probably should rate it as a stand alone wine, but this time I rated it vs Latour. I learn something new about wine almost every time I drink it.

On the nose classic bordeaux markers, pretty sweet and ripe cherries, rather pebbles than cedar, herbal notes without any greenness, some licorice root and stable without disturbing. In the mouth, it is a real sweet dark cherry, sweet cassis, not so much plums but a minerally stony component that lifts and gives freshness. The fruit is the most dense we have experienced from a 04, not super long but nice hang of cherries, black currant concentrate, spices and nutmeg. The tannins are deliciously chewy and fine-grained.
The wine is really good now and with such good fruit, it will surely both last and develop for at least another decade. If you want vigour and a little resistance, however, it is absolutely excellent to drink now.

Really classic Pauillac, which hit the spot with BBQ onglet and lamb chops. The tannins were fully integrated after about 30 minutes in the decanter but the bouquet and flavours remain entirely primary, and rich for the vintage: lots of dark fruit and a hint of chocolate. It's deep, supple and delicious and I'm already looking forward to my next bottle.

Fourth time tasting this wine in 2020. Why so many times in one year? Because it is drinking so great and it squarely in its prime. Every time I drink it, I go online to buy more. It contains everything that I love in a Pauillac wine. If you can find it, but it. Just know you are competing with me to buy more. :-)

Chateau Pichon Baron with Christian Seely (Zoom!): Similar climate to 2014, similar cepage to 2005. Just a trace of redness at the rim. A little blank on the nose, but just delicious on the palate: spice, red tea, very juicy and long. Fine tannins. Classy, stylish and just something you'd want to drink plenty of.

Third time tasting this in the past six months. It is utterly delicious and drinking in its prime right now. Don’t worry... it has enough fruit concentration to plateau at this level for at least another decade. It has everything I love about Pauillac... black currant, blackberries, black licorice, cedar, bell pepper, tobacco, and a touch of smoke. I could smell it all night long. Lengthy finish. Delic!

Very deep ruby with a very “old world” nose with pronounced aromas of earth, mushrooms, wet leaves, tar, toast, cooked plums. This is a mature, fully developed wine. Palate: dry, medium plus acidity very mild tannins, medium alcohol, full body, pronounced flavors of leather, tar, bitter chocolate,, smoke, wet leaves, prunes. Finish is medium. Very good wine to enjoy now or can tolerate a few more years in the bottle. Too bad this is my last one of the case bought in 2007 for $60

Very consistent with my prior tasting note last month on 2/29. This bottle came from a different lot/source yet the tasting note is the same, which is always a good sign on the consistency and performance of this wine. ‘04 Baron is in its perfect drinking window for my palate. Decanted 1 hour.

Another really enjoyable bottle of this wine which is down the middle of the Pauillac fairway. The colour remains deep crimson with a nose of blackcurrant, cedar, liquorice and black olive. The palate has a very good impact of blackcurrant fruit and a fine finish with a touch of blackberry leaf rounding out the overall impact. A well constructed wine that has never disappointed.

Deep ruby in the glass, almost black. Big explosion on the nose with black fruit and herbs coming into focus, but with some air, turn into tones of tobacco, leather, dried cassis, olive tapenade and crushed seashells. Super crisp, wasn't expecting this from Pauillac, but does have the big masculinity as well. Long, dry and savoury finish. Tannins are resolved. Could go ten more years easily without falling apart the slightest bit.

This has everything I love about Pauillac in the glass. Drinking in its absolute sweet spot right now and fully mature. Black licorice, black currant, cedar, and a touch of olive tamponade, cherry cola, and tobacco. There is so much going on in the glass and the finish is terrific. This very much outperforms my 2004 vintage expectations.

Wine was properly stored from purchase upon release until consumed. Big, beautiful classic Bordeaux bouquet - tons of berries and cassis. Blueberries, blackberries, plums, lovely. Nothing better than great vintages... This wine is good, but it shows the limits of 2004 in this estate. In my opinion, It tastes more like a good 30$ Cru Burgeois from Margaux... But lacks of everything to be a good Cru Classé from Pauillac. It start to fade out after 2 or 3 hours, so DRINK UP... And don't expect to delight any connoisseur guest.

Dark garnet appearance- definitely garnet but still opaque.
Fully evolved nose of black fruits, crème de cassis, vanilla and some Puaillac lead pencil. Aroma is not quite pronounced and needs some coaxing in the glass to unfurl.
Medium bodied, with medium plus acidity- still very fresh and "crunchy" for a 15 year old (or so ) wine. Similar flavor characteristics on the palate with a medium plus finish.
Very well done. Will likely last "indefinitely" in a cold cellar, but why wait as this will not improve.

Even better than the bottle a few weeks ago because of two decant which rounded the tannins and made herbal aroma in integral part of the cassis nose. Really drinking well now, this can still be held but doubt it will get better

Decanted for 2h at Garth's. Very aromatic leather and oak on the nose, but the palate is rather austere: more earthy leather notes, very faint blackberry, and a soft but short finish. The fruit is mostly gone, this is an intellectual but perhaps no longer delicious wine.

Elegant nose of black cherry, leather and cedar. Well balanced with med+ body and finish but with slight tartness of unripe tannins. Very enjoyable and drinking well now. Creme, vanilla, dark fruits bouquet. Palate of black fruits, mint, cedar and tobacco. Classic Baron. Nice menthol finish, although not as long and as memorable as the finish of VCC 1999 tasted alongside. There is energy and this has no edges. Probably in its prime drinking window. Drank form magnum. Cork came out in one piece. Decanted for about two hours. Purplish red still, darker than I thought it would be. Lovely perfumed nose of ripe red fruit, leather and wood. On the palate very much the same of the above. Soft tannins. A rather lovely wine. We had it with corn-fed chicken, gnocchi oven bake and asparagus. Not a traditional combination, but one that turned out quite nice. I would not keep this one much longer. I think 750ml bottles are further down the line. This wine is drinking well now in my mind.

Brought to double-blind tasting of "random wines" for CT Seattle group, it was the group's favorite and my second place wine out of 9. Dark garnet in the glass, lots of tobacco and dark fruit in the glass. Add some cedar and firm tannins on the palate and finish. Did pick this out as my wine during the tasting.
The last bottle of about ten received many years ago. These were always questionable. Ordered a case, received 10 in terrible packaging, wine-stained labels, signs of heat damage. Some have been very good, others not so much. This smelled correct, but palate was oddly tart, something not quite right. A shame, but the good ones were quite good.

Of the two clarets I had this evening, this was the better of the two, but only because the other one was complete unadulterated rubbish. This one had marginally better structure (because the other one had none) and a semblance of power and precision, but overall this is a boring, overrated, expensive, and generally pointless wine. It's thick and unctuous, in a good way (good body and weight) and has some enjoyable but generic aromatics (the usual Left Bank checklist of blackberry and cedar and tobacco and maybe mint) but almost no acidity or assertiveness or personality. Just a rather sad, dying thing. This would have been more vigorous and interesting in its youth, although ironically, this is supposed to *be* its youth! A bit pathetic, really.

1/12. Decanted 1/2 hour. Deep ruby core, very narrow pale ruby rim. Nose shows ripe blackcurrant fruit, vanilla. Good purity. Medium/full bodied, quite plush, ripe black fruit, vanilla, spice, some cedar showing, decent acidity, expands nicely into a very good length finish. The tannins are fine though still a touch firm on the finish - all in all an excellent if relatively backward 2004.

Knew it was Pauillac from the get-go. Nose of green leaf tobacco, hint of mint, some herb, lots of black fruit. Think this has gained balance and maturity since my last bottle. Decanted and aerated for an hour then drank over another hour. Very masculine nose of crème de cassis, crushed rocks, pencil lead, and black pepper. Blackish crimson color, creamy entry on the palate, leather and cassis, pepper, fills mid palate, but slightly austere and slightly tannic finish. Full bodied this wine is gaining in power and complexity. Truly great effort given the vintage. Remains one of my favorite Pauillacs for 2004.

PnP then drunk over three evenings. Best was on 2nd evening. Color shows still quite young, with a deep and lively garnet red. Very intense nose, quite complex, with fruit still, then cedar notes, a balsamic touch, and a faint hint of mushroomy notes. Palate is quite remarkable: immediately intense and deep and firm at the same time. Juicy and generous on the midpalate, but without ever losing its firmness and seriousness. Ends almost on a blood, bitter orange note, but on a second sip more towards graphite (or iron perhaps). Also a bit astringent on the finish, but with a very fine texture. Beautiful wine.
I'm always surprised how well-made Bordeaux ages in so-called off years. This had great fruit, well-balanced acid, hints of cedar and dried berries. It will keep another decade or provide enjoyment now.

This wine continues to surprise me on the upside every time I leave a gap of two years. Creamy cassis, glycerin like on the palate, some spice and a mocha finish. Pretty great Pauillac. Has a great core of smoke, flint, char and pure red fruits. Mid palate is a little hollow, somewhat typical of '04, but the PB this vintage as a plush roundness to to the fruit that is very appealing. Tannins are quite mild at this stage, but isn't going to fade anytime soon.

Rich, ripe blackberry, elderberry fruit. Excellent level of acidity, although the tannins in this bottle were significantly mellower than last bottle 4 years ago. Maturing nicely, good now an probably over next 4-5 years

Fine and elegant but still a little bit jammy bouquet of blackcurrant, blackberries, chocolate, leather, cloves and black pepper. Full body, fresh acidity and quite an intensive tanines that just begin to mellow. Excellent concentration on the palate. Great!

A point less today. Statistically insignificant. Pauillac austerity, but oh so good with rack of lamb. Just entering the sweet spot of it's window of drinkability. Well balanced, but perhaps a little shy on the fruit. No hurry to drink.

Powerful meaty nose with red fruits, mint, graphite and eucalyptus. Hints of burnt ash. Oak well integrated. Silky but quite dry in the mouth. Nicely structured; neither overly tannic nor overly resolved. Classical in style, but without feeling excessively austere.
Now is a good time to be drinking, but this will keep for a good while. 2004 is probably my favorite year of the new millennium for drinking right now, and this is a great example.

Truly lovely bordeaux, showing good dark fruit, but dominated by earthy notes, cigar box, leather, forest floor, barnyard, what one expects from a well made and aged bordeaux. Soft and subtle tannins. Decanted 1 hour, and it drank beautifully.

Slightly less open than previous bottle and more austere on the nose and the palate. Lots of leather, cassis and pencil lead on the nose and palate interlaced with notes of black pepper. Well balanced and enjoyable but a less sweet finish versus other bottles I have had.

Lovely lovely lovely almost has fully shed its austerity. Fat, an explosion of cassis, graphite and spice with decent weight mid palate and a charming finish. One of mm favorite 2004s.

Fantastic! Round and rich, lots of tobacco and stewed cherry and leather on the nose. Palate is full of Christmas spices - nutmeg, clove, cinnamon. Blackberry. As it decants, it smooths out nicely and some of the spice flavors move to the background. Really nice wine.

Spicy and complex nose - but less cigar box and more dark fruits. Long long taste with a backbone of good acidity. Tannins still there, but givs more structure than raspiness. Overall impression very good, modern style - will last for ever, but lots of pleasure drinking now.

Beautiful ruby red. Did not decant unfortunately but with an hour of aeration in bottle the wine was drinking beautifully having shed a lot of its austerity and gained a bit of complexity. Classic Pauillac nose of cassis, leather, asphalt and black currant. Refreshing entry on the palate, great balance mid palate with dark red fruits and cassis as well as black pepper notes, nice acidity and a good satisfying finish with juicy soft tannins. Nice to revisit this excellent wine after a three year hiatus.

Likable, easy drinking, forward style of Pichon Baron, that while it lacks the weight and depth of the best vintages, there is good Pauillac character and the price is more than fair.

Dark crimson colour. Classic Pauillac nose of blackcurrant, dark plum, cedar and touches of dark chocolate. Palate quite rich with beautiful austerity and length - well balanced and finishes with fine line of tannin. The quality belies the general ranking of the year.

Goes into the mouth like silk. This is a very delicate and refined wine. 2004 has been given a bad rap and this wine cleary is as good as a Pichon Baron that I have ever tasted. Well done!!

Much better than last bottle, further strengthening my suspicion that my case was handled badly before I took possession. This bottle was classic BDX, really excellent, and a perfect pairing for braised lamb shanks.

This must be one of the best wines from vintage 2004 from Pauillac, ripe fruit, maybe a little "sweet" to be a classic Bordeaux, but everyone will like this wine, smells and tastes like an delicate bordeaux shall, tobacco, blackberry, cedar, full-bodied, but also elegant and feminin.

Had for Christmas dinner. Pichon Baron is one of our favorite Bordeaux wines. Still very dark red, needs some air time to open up somewhat. Dense dark blackberry fruit, cassis, graphite. short to medium finish however. We felt that this bottle was a bit flat compared with the last bottle we drank a couple of years ago. Perhaps it is closing down for a bit. Patience required!

Bad bottle. Going downhill fast. I have felt for some time that my bottles were stored improperly before they came to me in about 2008. Some have been quite good, but this one felt far, far too mature.
Not the best Bordeaux vintage and in many ways saved by a warm and sunny autumn. Pichon Baron shows dark berries and a lot of vanilla and baking spices. Classic perfumed Pauillac nose with some tertiary notes of damped cellar. Still grippy tannins (2004 can be viewed as a bit green and unripe) backed up by balanced acidity. Dark fruit, toasted oak, green herbs and a long but some bitter notes in the finish.

Blueberry on the nose along with spices, tobacco, pencil lead. Great nose. On the taste good fruit although could probably have a little more. Nice tannins although you certainly feel them. The nose was 95 while taste was 90.

One of the best bordaux noses in a very long time. Splendid fruit in the core, cranaberries maybe?, not black but rather blue fruit. Close to full bodied. Tannic, but very enjoyable. Maybe 94 with a few more years? Pnp. I would probably have guessed St Estephe.

This had 3 hours of slow ox before lunch. Dark and tart fruits, and a palate that was far less masculine and powerful than I expected. Probably needs either more air or plenty of aging for some of the subtleties of the wine to open up.

Chateau Pichon Baron vertical 1989-2010 (Ripple Restaurant in Washington D.C.): This was my overall favorite of the flight. It exuded the purest fruit, with a joyful brambly aspect. And yet full bodied and even somewhat brooding tannin underneath makes it built for a longer run. Long finish, too. Loved it from bottle in London in March 2014, and love it again in January 2015. http://www.wine-chronicles.com/blog/revisiting_2004_bordeaux/

Chateau Pichon Baron Vertical with Jean-Rene Matignon (Ripple Restaurant in DC): Sweet black fruits, a hint of green, ash, lead pencil and mineral. Light to medium concentration, soft and round, polished and silky, mineral, nicely integrated tannins and medium finish. The fruit is ripe yet there is a hint of green. Although very enjoyable not terribly complex and feels a bit diluted.

Drank with with little aeration during a barbeque lunch at friends. This showed the expected diluteness and tough tannin typical of the 2004 vintage, especially after the delight of the 2000 Grand Puy Ducasse.

From a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, this is the last vintage where the estate used any Cabernet Franc in the assemblage. From a developed nose, with bell pepper, cedar wood, leaf, cigar box, vanilla, tobacco and spicy cassis flavors, the wine is medium bodied and on the fresh, crisp, spicy, strict, classic side of the style range. There is a hint of dryness in the cassis and cranberry finish.

Amazing almost a year has past since my last bottle of this wine... So this is no.3 from a case of 12, and unfortunately the least convincing. 1h decant - and needs it to gain some weight and aromatics. The wine seems to have shed a lot of fruit in the past 10 months. Very nice, and typical Bordeaux nose with sous bois, red and dark fruit and a herbal touch. On the palate this however seems rather thin for a 10 year old Pichon Baron. Just about medium weight, fine and well integrated tannins. Would have guessed 1999 or perhaps 2001 blind. The palate is certainly pleasant, largely reflecting the nose with an additional touch of coffee but unlike only 10 months ago have now doubts this will go much further. Medium finish. 91-92. Drink in the next few years (?)

Decanted for an hour and drank over 1.5 hours. Ex chateau bottle and stored properly since purchase so the bottle was in pristine condition. Nose was pretty muted. Medium bodied on the palate with notes of graphite, smoke and tobacco. Very drying tannins. Oak was present but has integrated somewhat. Finish was medium plus. This wine, although possessing some depth, seemed to be lacking in fruit. Not sure if more cellar time will help this to fill out a bit. If drinking now, suggest extended decant of >2-3hrs.

Wonderful depth on the nose. On the palate it's surprisingly medium-bodied and classical in profile. Reading the other notes I was expecting something perhaps a bit more rich and multi-dimensional flavor-wise. The length is good if nothing exceptional. Overall it's very fine, was just expecting something quite special at this level. Or maybe a long decant would change things with this one.

Elegant wine, bottle had soft fruits and a long finish with fine notes of tobacco and cedar dominating. Tannins hid until the last of the bottle, likely a good sign for aging. Felt a bit hollow mid-palate, which knocked the score down for me.

From 375: Still a baby, but showing oh so much promise! Drinkable now with great pleasure, but will improve in the cellar. Typical young Pauillac with not much on the nose but displaying lead pencil and tobacco notes on the palate. Tannins are present, but the fruit holds sway. great balancing acidity and a long finish.

Very intense graphite / pencil shavings /mineral nose. Ultra clean but for me lacks fruit concentration to balance this minerality which appears a tad edgy. Palate has a fluid texture with somewhat drying tannins on the finish and refreshing acidity. This is capable of at least ten more years of development while it drinks nicely even now. Not a great Baron but still a beautifull wine.

Drank with friends at Vezenes restaurent. Readily expressive with a nose screaming Pauillac and cabernet sauvignon: intense graphite, black currant, smoke, coffee, capsicum and hints of spice. On the palate it is medium to full-bodied with ripe fruit for a 2004, firm, somewhat drying tannins in need of further cellaring, relatively high acidity and a long aftertaste. Nice wine to enjoy now with juicy meat dishes, otherwise further cellaring for another 5 years or so will be rewarding.

Still young and tannic but definitely smoothing out, the '04 Baron is very dark and purple. It needs decanting or time in a glass to develop and has a lovely nose. Cherries. A very good length.

typical Pauillac nose, pencil, black currant, cedar, tobacco,in the animalic, getting better after contact with air, in the palate additional spicy, pepper, phenolic, powerful, still young, will getting rounder and smoother with aging, but for me not with great potential, middle long aftertaste

Deep, juicy fruit. Fairly advanced with smoky oak, minty herbs, iron, mineral. Well contained within its structure. Drinking well, no reason to wait on this. in fact I don't think it's built for long aging. Modern Bordeaux styling, tastes like hot year wine. Very good. B/B+

In the bouquet very ripe black forest fruits, chocolate and luxurious oak. On the palate very ripe dark fruit as well, a lot of sweetness and also good acidity. The tannin is ok and a bit drying. Medium long finish. Although this is a luxurious, refined and elegant wine, this bottle makes me wonder about the wine’s ageing potential. definitely nice for the next few years, but around 2020; not sure. It is really lovely now, but this bottle doesn’t show potential for 10 more years. Nevertheless an exclusive wine which I scored 92 for tonight.

Maybe a little less expressive than the last bottle, but still quintessential Pichon Baron. Nose of cigar box, tobacco leaf and red fruits. Palate is on the lush/soft side, with some chewy tannins in the background. Leans toward a darker fruit profile, but the red cabernet fruit pokes through. Moderate length cedar driven finish. This is a great '04 Bdx from start to finish, accessible now but will live well for another 10yrs. Lacks a little complexity (like many '04s) compared to the great years.

Appearance: Bright and clear, the wine is of deep intensity ruby color, with legs. Nose: Clean, with medium (+) intensity, showing black fruit such as blackcurrant, blackberry and dark cherry, maturity notes of savory and tobacco, oak notes of cedar and smoke, sweet spice of nutmeg, mineral notes of graphite, kernel notes of chocolate. The wine is developing. Palate: Dry with medium acidity, the wine has medium (+) tannin but is ripe and smooth, with medium alcohol, medium (+) body and medium (+) intensity flavors of black fruit such as blackberry and plum, oak notes of vanilla and cedar, kernel notes of milk chocolate, mineral notes of earth. The wine has a long finish. Conclusion: Very good quality Bordeaux with an intense nose, showing high complexity with a wide range of different characters, the wine has a well-defined structure, elegant and with expressive freshness. The palate is equally amazing with good concentration and an exceptional finish, this wine really demonstrates how a good Bordeaux can be, and why it mesmerizes so many drinkers. Ready to drink now, the wine can benefit from further ageing of another 5-7 years.

PnP into decanter. Very tight upon opening needs a good hour to open up. This has developed a fair bit in the last 10 months. Gone are the purple reflections (dark garnet to the rim now) and the excessive fruit. As the fruit has receded somewhat the tannins are more prominent. Those tannins are never unpleasant, rather they show a solid structure and a wine that will age for many years. Dark fruit, sous bois, earth, lead pencil, herbs, milk chocolate and a long, wonderfully sweet finish. Excellent - enjoy now if you don't mind a bit of tannin, or wait a few more years and see this wine go to 94. Best value Pichon Baron I have had by a long shot.

Classic Bordeaux. Pop and pour but this wine improved over the first hour so I would give it a short decant. This is my first of 4 and it is delicious. The color is crystal clear garnet... it almost shines. The nose is big with earth, smoke, graphite, cherry. The flavor is big graphite, tar, dark fruit, currant, pepper, and a bit of tannin. Nice balance and good complexity. Very classy with a smooth and lingering finish.

Bottle in excellent condition; "high-fill"; on the nose: coconut, plums, creme de cassis & dark cherries, followed by cedarwood & tobacco; a great & rich Pauillac with pretty much to offer: deep, dark & honest; can be enjoyed now or put away for another 10 years: a textbook bordeaux; nice effort for this vintage!

Nice added maturity on nose, with some tobacco and blackberries. Not as rich on palate as my last tasting in 2011, with a bit dried out leathery fruit as well. Not sure if this is in a dumb stage, or off bottle. Scored a point less than 2 previous bottles.

Started out very nicely but after an hour or more in the decanter it started to fade a little and acidity overwhelmed the fruit. It didn't help this was drunk alongside the Leoville Lascases 04 which completely outshine it. Will try another bottle to reconfirm this note.

Quite evolved already than the 2008 tasted at the chateau. On the nose, notes of leather, licorice, baking spices, some dried fruit such as dried strawberry. It tastes like it's more acidity than the 2008, maybe because the fruit has dried out a bit. Silken tannins and medium plus finish. Can hold for another 3 to 5 years, but probably won't improve much. For early drinking. 65% CS, 30% Merlot and 5% CF.

Bordeaux 2004 (@ Bottles; Sas van Gent, Netherlands): Beautiful bouquet with ripe black forest fruits and luxurious smoky oak and leather. 1h decant. Dark garnet even a touch of purple. Still a rather tight nose with some herbs. Impressive, generous dark fruit on the palate. Like blueberry pie with some cream but without being overly jammy. Some chocolate and a bit lead pencil too. Tannins initially entirely covered by the fruit, later they come out a bit more pronounced but it all stays in nice balance. Medium plus finish. A very impressive 04 with a long life ahead.
Drinking really well. Decanted for 60-90 minutes, dark ruby color, hardly any age of signing on the rim. Beautiful nose of black currants, cassis, red berries, old leather, pepper. Velvety entry on the palate, rich mid palate coating it with dark red fruits, great acidity, perfect balance, tannins now beginning to resolve, decent finish. Medium to full bodied. This wine is open for business, and outshined the Pichon Lalande 2004 that we drank next to it.

Maybe not a great Pichon Baron when compared to subsequent vintages of '05, '09, and '10, but a damn good Bordeaux all the same. Full bodied with fully ripe fruits, sound structure, fresh acidity, and great balance. Showing good complexity already, this has reached early maturity, though it has the substance and structure to age beautifully for another decade at least.

This vintage is open for business. Decanted and started drinking less than an hour after aeration. Very nice aromas of cassis, sweet tobacco, earth and leather, a hint of spice. Succulent fruit on the palate, smooth and fresh entry, great acidity, decent power - medium to full bodied, and velvety tannins fully rounded and a decent finish. Drinking very nicely now and no doubt plenty of life ahead.

Vertical tasting of 1996, 2004, 2005, and 2006; this vintage was allowed to breathe in the open bottle for an hour prior to tasting; very intense nose with roses, violet, and ripe cherries; the palate was quite mellow and sweet, with dark berries and cherries, a touch of mint, and some dry oak (but less than the 05); the finish was medium long with most of the elements from the palate; my #2 favorite wine of the night; 93-94 for now; some aging potential to improve over the next 3-5 years, but very drinkable now already.

Unfortunately just a 30mL taste in Paris. Bright deep purple/red. Beautiful defined nose of rich dark fruit. Fine, detailed nose. Violet and touch of oak. Intense opening with layers of dark fruit and a wash of grippy tannin. Quite a dry acid and tannic middle palate. Very good length. Great wine - better than I was expecting given the vintage. Nose the star. Could age further but drinking beautfully now.

2012 CellarTracker Bordeaux Trip; 5/21/2012-5/24/2012 (Bordeaux, France): 65% Cabernet Sauvignon / 30% Merlot / 4% Cabernet Franc / 1% Petit Verdot. This is classic Pauillac on the nose in the form of rich cassis, freshly shaved lead pencil, black cherries, along with some aromas of fresh strawberries and red currants. Not quite what I was expecting from the palate, this was very light and elegant showing more of that strawberry that was evident on the nose, along with black cherries, lead pencil, asphalt, and some tobacco. A good does of acidity compliments the palate, along with a moderate amount of gritty tannins. Medium+ length finish, ending with notes of tar and black cherry. This being my first time tasting the '04, I'm going to have to assume this was somewhat closed and not ready to strut it's stuff. I'd like to try this again in a few years, as I've really enjoyed a lot of the other '04's I've tasted recently. Good+.

Bordeaux Region - Tasted at Chateau: Tasted at Chateau Phichon-Longueville. Elegant, silky, classy. Bouquet of dark fruits, earth. Deep red color. The 2004 is not one of the great vintages, but it is fairly ready to drink now, so we were offered this at the Chateau. Plums, earth, smoke, cassis. Still a little closed, mouth filling tannins. Should improve with another year or two, but finish drinking within 5 or 6. (Doris liked this wine)

Tannins are a bit more firm than others in the tasting.

Bordeaux 2004 Dinner at 3418 (My House): Outstanding. My wine of the night. Three of us ranked it #1, and one of us ranked it #2. Signature Pauillac aromas and flavors jump out of the glass and coat the palate. Bigger than the Montrose, but not as big as the Cos. Very similar to the Pontet-Canet, but with a little more complexity and classic Pauillac profile. This is the kind of Bordeaux that makes me love Bordeaux.

Everything I love about Bordeaux. I have not had enough lately. Full flavored, but restrained. Cassis, lead pencil, leather and tobacco. Compared to 22 months ago, the tannins seem smooth and velvety, reaching a really pleasant state of maturity that makes this easy to drink without feeling dehydrated after one glass. Plum fruit on the back palate that provides a pleasant sweetness to the finish..

Goedhuis Tasting 2011 (Fort Canning Hotel): Third time round and very similar impressions from the last two bottles. An accomplished wine, as one would expect from a Baron, but certainly not one of the better vintages. The nose was still quite tight but clearly starting to open up just a bit. It showed dark cassis notes, tobacco, earth and spice. It took a bit of swirling and air to coax it out of its shell, but I liked it. The palate was another story though, while well-balanced and classily structured with fine tannins and fresh acidity, it was still a bit lean on the fruit side. It was almost as if the flesh was lacking and the wine showed its ribs of spice, tobacco and, above all, bittersweet mineral sticking out through layers of cassis fruit. This was a well-made wine for sure, nicely poised and very polished all the way into its decent finish, but it needs plenty of time yet - this bottle actually seemed rather leaner than the last one I had some one a half years ago which had a bit more time in the bottle to breathe before tasting. Overall, a good enough Baron, but I do not think it will ever be a great one.

Pauillac 2GCC. Bordeaux aristocrat - a 'super second'. Popped and poured - big mistake. Nose is still closed, with only subtle hints of fruits and damp earth. Throughout the night, the nose and palate kept improving steadily from areation - should've given it a min 3 hour decant. In the mouth, very polished tannins and dominant spice. This evolved into nice, rounded creaminess w spicy elements receding to a subtle hint after 2 hours. Black fruits start to surface by the last glass. Tannins are still obvious yet v polished. It's a very classic and complex wine, but should be outstanding if given more air or bottle age. http://sgbordeaux.blogspot.com/2011/05/pichon-longueville-baron-2004.html

A wonderful wine with great fruit that is tightly packed, dark but also have some red fruits such as raspberries. The oak is present but not overpowering.

Great wine at the loser's place (Otti this time) (Winterthur): Somewhat of a fresh nose, cherry, yogurt, tons of tannin, a bit drying out, which is a bit of a risk with respect to long term aging. I liked it but wouldn't bet on another 20 years.

Annual Pilgrimage to Chateau Lanessan (and its 200 year old cellar ); 8/19/2011-8/21/2011 (Chateau Lanessan, Bordeaux): Tried it twice on the same day. Once at the Chateau and once for dinner (we purchased the bottle from the chateau as we wanted the guys back at Lanessan to try) We are sold on 04 and definitely will be buying some. Very well made elegant and tannins are starting to soften nicely . Give this some decanting and will be a great wine to drink now while one waits for 2000, 01 , 05 to mature. Great but. 92-93. Drink from now.

Decanted1 hr. Very dark in the glass with a ruby robe. Complete nose of leather, cassis, blackberries, raspberries, cedar, tobacco, mint, and old books. Vibrant red fruits on the attack which are quickly joined by coffee, cocoa, tobacco, and earthy flavors adding some complexity. Tannins are pronounced but not obtrusive. Very good acidity which kept things fresh and kept me coming back for more. It thins out a bit in the middle but quickly recovers with great intensity and length on the finish. While fruit forward, there is no excess of sugar to be sure. There is something very clean and pure about this wine, very Bordeaux. This is the type of wine that makes Bordeaux just so damn interesting! Outstanding to be sure, but with room for growth. 93+

Popped and poured and consumed over the next 2-3hrs. initially was quite juicy with a liquor-like quality to the fruit, but settled in with air showing more structure. Complex intriguing nose of cassis, licorice, cedar spice, and coffee. Palate showing balanced acidity and fine tanninc grip in the background. Concentrated, clean forward fruit with cassis and currants most prominent. Turns slightly hollow on the mid palate, but comes back on the finish with layers of concentrated fruit, cedar, and coffee notes that linger on for some time. A great bdx for the vintage, continues to drink well now and should age very well. A strong mint/eucalyptus notes comes out on the nose and palate with extended air--the good kind, not Chile.

Bordeaux Trip, 4 days, 1st and 2nd Growths; 6/14/2011-6/17/2011 (Bordeaux): Rich dark ruby color. Blend of 75% CS and 25% M. Nose is lovely with nice earthiness, creme de cassis, blackberry, blueberry, minerals. Palate shows nice round structure, lovely rich black fruits, soft in the mouth, yet full. Very good length. This really is nice 93-94pts.

At Monterey. I decanted for three hours. Beautiful nose of dark cherries, spice box, cedar, coffee. Rich palate, slightly new world but with traditional bordeaux elements of stark minerality. Silky, rich tannins. Great balance of acidity with some cherry leather notes on terrific finish. On par with top '04s. Tied with Mouton for WOTN.

Bordeaux at the Monterey (The Monterey): 3hr decant prior to serving and was rocking from the start. Leather, cedar, and hint on the nose with a pure crème de cassis and cherries nose. Fruit forward, concentrated and pure red fruit palate, chewy tannins, and a lengthy flinty, coffee, and leather finish. The more fruit forward and “clean” bdx in the tasting. Delicious. Drinking well now and should age well. Tannins more “coarse” and less polished than Laland and Mouton.

Decanted for 3-4 hours, which was about right. Very smooth tannins, plenty of fruit emerged. Complex with a long finish. Sooo much better than the 04 Caymus Special Selection that we opened last Saturday night.

I cannot believe that I am down to my last four bottles of this lovely wine. I cannot afford the 2005s plus so I will have to content myself with memories of its richness, lovely bouquet and balance of fruit and tannin. It is still drinking very, very well.

This bottle seemed lighter, a bit hollow in the middle. But I fear my bottles weren't treated that well before I obtained them, so a bit of variation is maybe acceptable. Still classic bdx scents, not bad if not as good a showing as the last time.

Very dense ruby red with a vibrant, intense blackcurrant nose. Rich, creamy palate with intense dark fruits and spicy grippy tannins. The structure is huge but not overpowering. I look forward to trying another of these in 10 years.

Opaque purple red. Primary, straight-forward and tight with classic Pauillac power, even in this lean vintage. Actually very refreshing with soft tannins and decent acid throughout; aromas and flavors of cassis, graphite, earth, cigar box, wet tobacco and baking spice. Nice structure and midpalate without a super compelling finish. Regardless, this wine may have the stuffing to emerge into a developed BDX frame, but the envelope will most likely be condensed. Another example that '04 continues to be a vintage with accessible wines in their youth from a region that demands such patience; a blessing few take advantage of.

Could either use a couple more years bottle age or a good 4 hour decant...
After 2 hours, this wine was still tight. Palate tastes of cassis, dark blackberry and a finish of tobacco and oak. I agree with Paul S: "Finish was not monumental... it really does need some time to put on a little complexity."

Boy did I screw the pooch on this one. THis wine was far too young to drink now. What a mistake. It took the entire meal to open up in the decanter. Even when it did, it was flat and lacking in any character and boldness. There was an earthy sense about it that I liked, but I feel like it would have been a different wine in 5 years, and again in 10 years.

Tasted blind. Black color. Rich blackberry on the nose. Lush entry that turns astringent against the black currant, lead pencil & cassis flavors that are clipped by grippy tannins. A little too astringent now, but that may settle down in time.

Ultimate Parker in Singapore Mega-Tasting (The Fullerton Hotel, Singapore): Have not tried this since two years ago - I think it has improved quite a bit. Still not a great Baron, but certainly a pretty good one. Very classic Pauillac on the nose, with tobacco, meat and graphite scents drifting over a bed of dark cassis tones. Still rather primary on the palate, with some sweet cassis tones dominant. Fine structure and good balance was evident though. I also thought this was actually rather rich and powerful for a 2004. Finish was not monumental, but decent enough, with some clean cassis flavours and a shortish burst of spice. A very pleasant wine indeed. Drinking very nicely, but it really does need some time to put on a little complexity.

Opened for about two hours but not decanted for a slow and gentle breathe. Classic and precise Pauillac. Pencil and cedar on the nose. Eventually joined by good anise or fennel note, indicative of a good but less ripe vintage I think. Lovely currant and some coffee on the palate with good length. The tannins are present but are so fine and wrapped so well in the fruit that you almost don't notice them at all but still sense that the wine will drink well for probably a decade as they gradually, imperceptibly integrate. I have another six and I plan to drink at a rate of one per year.

Classic Bordeaux: cassis, licorice, and pencil lead. Tar, tobacco leaves, and plum on the palate. Gripping tannins starting to become rounder, yet retains plenty of structure. Moderately long finish. Clearly coming into a great drinking window.

Pichon vs Pichon NYC (New York, United States): Coffee, cassis and some austerity. There was a foreboding presence to this wine that screamed Cabernet, but for some reason I was thinking Comtesse because a few years back during a Baron vertical, the 2004 seemed almost Californian, but that was comparing Barons to Barons!

This wine continues to drink well. I had my previous bottle in May. There has not been any change. The fragrance is pronounced -- floral and alcohol. The color is deep red. The flavor is balanced -- mostly fruit backed up with tanin and oak. It is all very harmonious -- it went beautifully with loin lamb chops

This wine was decanted and poured. The bouquet initially shows wonderful forward aromatics of graphite, black currant, cedar, vanilla and floral notes. The aromatics become more nuanced with airing. The color is an opaque purple to almost black. The medium/full bodied palate shows balance and depth with tannin structure on the finish. This is drinking well now for its youthful power and vibrancy. It will benefit from additional bottle age and most likely drink its best about ten years from the vintage.

Trip to Bordeaux; 8/9/2009-8/14/2009: (tasted in the chateau) This is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc with a little bit Petit Verdot, it has spent 18 months in 80% new oak. It has an almost black color but it is still quite closed in the nose (the bottle had no time to breathe at all). Despite that, after a while blackberries, currants and liquorice come out. The tannins are quite evident but they have become round enough. This is a very well made wine, a Grand Vin that can offer a lot of pleasure as it is but one that will also age beautifully for another 10-15 years at least.

Animal blood, blackberries, black coffee, liquorice on the spicy and slightly smokey nose. Leather, ripe black fruit, espresso and exotic spices on the slightly lactic palate. The sweet, grainy tannins are still prominent, but with sufficient air this wine can now be enjoyed. However, near time bottle aging will almost certainly be rewarded. Might merit a higher score.

Popped and poured. Tasted side-by-side with an '04 Cos d'Estournal. The '04 Pichon-Baron was approachable and sleeker and more minerally in character, with superb aromatics and a moderately concentrated palate of dark fruit, lead pencil, coffee, and soy. Less baby fat than the Cos. Fine ripe tannins on the moderately long finish. This is not a blockbuster but very tasty and totally true to its Pauillac origins.

Tasted at Seckford Wine Dinner - the Don. No formal note. This was relatively approachable, like many 2004s, with fresh, aromatic black and red berry fruits, vanilla, medium body and lovely fresh acidity on a good length finish. A lovely 2004, will drink quite early. From 2013ish.

Baching it, so I opened a half bottle to check in on this one. Muted black fruit nose, there's a sourness on the palate that disappears with food leaving black fruit. Tannins are still pretty prominent, but fine. Medium length finish. Also a creaminess - from the oak? I'd wait 2 or 3 years before opening another.

WFA Bordeaux 2004 tasting by the Wine Review; 10/16/2008-10/17/2008 (Suntec City, Singapore): Like the 2003, I thought this performed better than the Lalande from the same vintage. Darkish red colour. The nose was rather closed, showing rather fresh cassis and spice character but with most else having a muted feel. Simple palate, but classy, with fine tannins, clean but rich and rather plush cassis flavours and a nice finish that had a layer of mocha and a coating of bittersweet tannins. It is drinking pleasantly now, but there was a sense with this wine that there is a lot more going on under the surface, as if the volume knob was turned way down, so that you could only hear the primary notes. I think it will be quite a nice drink in 3-4 years.

taste: very rich tones of coffee, black currants, spice box, and red cherries. Smooth and rounded with a fat feel
overall: this one was a shocker when it got revealed. I have never had a Baron that acted like this. There was no bully or gut punching style that it normally has, but, it was still a outstanding wine that was thought provoking and possesed a fluid coffee attack and rich blackberry finish

bordeaux tasting (Binny's Highland Park): nose: big and dark nose with ripe cherries(almost residual sugary), tobbacco, green pepper, earth, and black berry tones. Good classic baron with that brawny heavyweight style that they do
taste: really brawny with black berries, dark cherry, green pepper, earth, and bits of tobbacco and leather
overall: this is a great wine and will be even better with time. Just a pure classic Baron that is perfect if you want an introduction into Baron's style. Big and Bold this gives off a really good upfront attack and leads into a great black currant finish that is complimented with some gripping tannins.

Deep dark red. Not much of a nose at all. Seemed closed with very little fruit. Faint raspberry, blackberry, and cherry flavors. Extremely dry on the palate. Nonetheless extremely well balanced with nice acidity. This should age nicely and hopefully there is some fruit lurking beneath the tannins.

This wine was included in a lineup of many lower level 2005 bordeaux bottlings and it totally outclassed them all, really showing what quality winemaking and attention to detail can give you, if you are willing to pay a much higher price for your wine. Very well structured with excellent depth, this wine can be enjoyed today and will only improve with time.

Decanted for two hours before drinking. Nice nose, although maybe not as strong as I had expected.
What an exceptionally well made wine. It has a very heavy viscosity yet manages to be light footed and only have 13.5% alcohol. Very new world for a Bordeaux: lots of dark cherries and other dark red fruits, but it does not come off like a fruit bomb at all. It still has the charcoal and cassis that remind you it's a Bordeaux and not a California Cab.
It's also surprisingly ready to drink. The tannins are still noticeable, but they're not strong enough to spoil the wine. With another five to ten years of cellaring it should be at its peak.

This sports a deep color, but lacks the same level of concentration found in 05 or 06. Spicy, jammy black fruit, very stylish. That being said, for the money, it is a good wine to have while waiting for the bigger years to come around.

Good herbal notes on high end, some tar and classic Bordeaux burnt oak on low end. Cedar, with angular dry tannins. Has the structure of a really classic Bordeaux, but lacks warmth, sweetness, and punch in mid palate fruit. Somewhat flat with dry, chalky, teeth coating tannins. This vintage is reminding me of a less hard 1994. Has more class than charm. Fans of "classic" Bordeaux might like this, fans of modern/international styled Bordeaux might not. B

BORDEAUX 2005 / Cabernet rules; 4/5/2006-4/10/2006 (Bordeaux): The nose is dominated by subtle oak-derived notes of cedar, but with fresh fruit lurking as well. The palate is fresh and more approachable than he 2005, but one notices a slight thinness when compared to the 2005. Just a touch. Still, a very nice 2004! 90-93

So tasty!

Black licorice, black currant, cedar, and a touch of olive tamponade, cherry cola, and tobacco. There is so much going on in the glass and the finish is terrific. This very much outperforms my 2004 vintage expectations.

See previous notes but this wine is truly amazing given the vintage. The only shortcoming is the finish which is not long enough. Perhaps with more time?

Pretty great Pauillac. Has a great core of smoke, flint, char and pure red fruits. Mid palate is a little hollow, somewhat typical of '04, but the PB this vintage as a plush roundness to to the fruit that is very appealing. Tannins are quite mild at this stage, but isn't going to fade anytime soon.

On the palate also lush dark fruits, sweet spices, beautiful acidity and soft tannin. Great length. The wine is starting to show nicely now in its early maturity stage. Will drink nice from now until at least 2020.

Good+.

While fruit forward, there is no excess of sugar to be sure. There is something very clean and pure about this wine, very Bordeaux.

Very fruity nose. Tannins could use some time to smooth out. Very complex, rixhed layered wine. Decanted 4 hours. Very full bodied Pauillac. Good stuff.

I'm not the fan of this wine but the 2004 changes my point of view.
I was lost in the name of Pichon Lalande for years because of its prime in the '80.
Pichon Baron 2004 is very polite, clean, fresh, deep and aromatic.
Texture is very smooth, very high-class and still classic in style. Much better than I expected !!!
The finish is silky, lovely long and tender. Beautiful wine !!!
It clearly declared...2nd Growth is 2nd Growth when drinking along with Malescot 2005.( 96-97/100 )
Drink now - 2025.................92-93/100....................

Overall: Killer. Great wine that will only get better. 93- (minus) points.

2004 Bordeaux- the last affordable vintage? (Sweets and Savories, chicago IL): nose: nice classy and elegant nose showing floral tones, spice box, red cherries, and crushed rocks. Very pretty nose that made me guess this to be a pomerol
taste: very rich tones of coffee, black currants, spice box, and red cherries.

Good herbal notes on high end, some tar and classic Bordeaux burnt oak on low end. Cedar, with angular dry tannins. This vintage is reminding me of a less hard 1994. Has more class than charm. Fans of "classic" Bordeaux might like this, fans of modern/international styled Bordeaux might not.
